Shima Kakoku / 島 霞谷, b. 1827, d. 1870 Self Portrait Japan (1864?) [Source]

It’s actually a little uncertain whether the picture above is a self-portrait. Although it’s labelled as such in the link, the text claims that it was taken by Shima’s wife, Shima Ryu / 島 隆, b. 1823, d. 1900, and is the first recorded photo to be taken by a Japanese woman. The two had learned photography together and operated a photo studio in Edo.

Of course, many of the photographic self-portraits I have on this blog didn’t have the subjects snapping the shutter themselves. And I have no way of knowing who composed the shot above.

Whatever the case, it’s a historically important image.

Well, with recent inspiration, I have finally hunkered down and returned to the karaoke lyric + interjection translations. Might as well resume from Ishin karaoke as that’s where I last left off... a few years ago.

This song is the one Nagakura (Saejima) sings proudly. Now, this is the full version of the song, but here is the link to another video feat. Saito, aka Sakamoto singing along. For convenience, I’ll translate the interjections in time with the song, as I’ve done for Samurai Ondo before, with a bit of freedom to rearrange because this is the full version.

I’ll be discussing this creature and the Ōmukade (colossal centipede) in upcoming (currently in production) Sekiro Bestiary Entries: The Kakuen is a legendary animal in the myths of China and Japan. They are also called Kaku or in Kakoku (カ国). They are similar to monkeys, and thus possess a characteristic of carrying away human females and violating them. According to the medical herb book Bencao Gangmu (本草綱目), they are bigger than monkeys, and according to the Baopuzi (抱朴子), a rhesus macaque that lives for 800 years becomes an ape, and if they live for 500 more years, then they become a Kakuen, which can live for 1000 or more years. In the Bencao Gangmu, a Kaku is a monkey that has grown old (WHITE HAIR, LONG NAILS) with dark blue skin underneath the fur.
