I’ll be discussing this creature and the Ōmukade (colossal centipede) in upcoming (currently in production) Sekiro Bestiary Entries: The Kakuen is a legendary animal in the myths of China and Japan. They are also called Kaku or in Kakoku (カ国). They are similar to monkeys, and thus possess a characteristic of carrying away human females and violating them. According to the medical herb book Bencao Gangmu (本草綱目), they are bigger than monkeys, and according to the Baopuzi (抱朴子), a rhesus macaque that lives for 800 years becomes an ape, and if they live for 500 more years, then they become a Kakuen, which can live for 1000 or more years. In the Bencao Gangmu, a Kaku is a monkey that has grown old (WHITE HAIR, LONG NAILS) with dark blue skin underneath the fur. SELKIES

A theme common for many,selkies are staple or mermaid comunity. Originating from european folklore selkies by traditional standards are mostly female individuals who can shed their skin and become human. Once a human catches them they can hide the skin, leaving the selkie caugth on land.However if by miracle she finds it she must return to the water for a period of time.

Following the idea we are talking a mythical mermaid profession,selkies in the sbr universe not only exist but are a staple for the underwater community. Doctors,teacher, recorders of old songs- the list can continue. the important part is that they carry the teachings of the tide and knowledge of survival.

Selkies are seals.that's how it is- but i raise you the question. in a culture where the primary method of recording and learning is trough vocal tradition and if by poaching,polluting and a ton of other stuff more the poblation decreased....

who's there to tell the story?

That's the same question raised in sbr and the answer is turn to anyone who is willing to learn how to be one. While being a selkie is kind of like of an ancient subpecies(?) is not a particular requirement to become one.

So as long as they have a teacher,complete certain rituals and stick to a moral code in theory anyone could become a selkie.
