James likes Kendall and Gustavo can tell the kid just needs to say it out loud. or “Griffin wants to pair you with an up-and-coming actress to have a fake relationship with.” “Oh,” James started with a raised eyebrow. “Well, if that's it, why’d you make everyone leave—” “I don't think you want a girlfriend,” Gustavo cut him off. “I think you want Kendall.” And it was the way Gustavo said it as if it were the most normal, casual thing in the world that made James’ head spin. He gave Gustavo a horrified look through the glass.

“Okay, you dogs are free to leave!” Gustavo's booming voice sounded through the microphone. “Except for you, James. You stay.”

“Oooh, you're in trouble,” Carlos joked, as Kendall playfully whacked his helmet, leaving the booth. Logan gave James's shoulder a reassuring squeeze before also leaving. Even Kelly had left. The door slammed, leaving James alone with Gustavo. 

“My performance was great today, so I have no idea what this is about.” James spoke with a slight nervous shake in his voice. Not noticeable to the average person. But Gustavo was not average. And the fact that Gustavo didn’t look angry made it all the more ominous. 

“Griffin wants to pair you with an up-and-coming actress to have a fake relationship with. He doesn't think you and Carlos should be single. Only one member shouldn’t be taken, according to him.” 

“Oh,” James started with a raised eyebrow. “Well, if that's it, why’d you make everyone leave—”

“I don't think you want a girlfriend,” Gustavo cut him off. “I think you want Kendall.”

And it was the way Gustavo said it as if it were the most normal, casual thing in the world that made James’ head spin. He checked the door with haste, even though he knew it had been slammed shut already. James gave Gustavo a horrified look through the glass. 

“Griffin doesn't care what I say, so I don't know how to convince him that his idea is a load of—”

“Wait, wait, wait,” It was James’ turn to cut the other off. “Y-You’re wrong! I don't 'want' Kendall!” He darted his eyes. 

“Look me in my eyes and say that.” 

James looked him in the eye with apprehension. “I don't want Kendall.”

“Now say it less like you want to die.”

“Gustavo.”

Gustavo patted Kelly’s chair next to him. “Come out here and sit with me.” He commanded. When James did so, he sunk into the chair and sighed. “Have you said it out loud yet?” Gustavo asked.

It seems there was no point in James denying it. “No,” he mumbled, uncharacteristically unconfident. 

“Do you want to give it a try?” 

“It’s just…ugh.” James ran a hand through his hair and down his face.

“I think I'm gay or bi or something. I don’t know. Girls are really cool, and I want them to want me, but they just stop mattering when I'm with Kendall. But guys never mattered to me…like ever. But to say ‘Kendall is an exception’ seems weird, y’know? So maybe I've been thinking way too hard about it. Maybe I'm confusing myself. It's probably just be my brain tricking my friendship-love for Kendall as romantic since it's so strong. Then again, I love Carlos and Logan so much, and the thought of being with them or kissing them is not something that appeals to me.” James took a deep breath. “Damn. Needed that. Thanks.” He looked down at his hands, fiddling with them slightly, his breath unusually quick. “Am I crazy?”

“You're a teenager feeling teenager-y things.” Gustavo replied. “Pretty crazy to me, but not in the way I think you're asking.” 

James folded his arms. “I don't want a girlfriend,” he repeated Gustavo’s earlier sentiment. “I don’t. Which feels weird, because I always have.”

“I used to want to be an interior designer. Wants change.”

James cracked a smile. “Y'know I could totally see that. But you're being uncharacteristically nice, and it's kind of freaking me out.” 

Gustavo scoffed, “I'm not being nice; I'm being factual. And I'm thinking of the band's success!” He protested defensively. “Having two single members of the band would be beneficial for the parasocial bonds your fans have towards you boys.” Gustavo paused and his eyes softened ever so slightly. “Maybe Griffin can be swayed.” 

“You care about me.” James teased with a grin.

“Ew.” Gustavo replied, simply.

“But really, I don't mind fake-dating a girl if I have to. I've real-dated girls. Griffin is the least of my concern.” James explained. 

Gustavo looked at James like he had two heads. “Your friends won't care that you like guys.” 

“Duh,” James agreed. “But I care. My mom might care. My dad would definitely care.” 

Gustavo looked at him expectantly, giving him the space to go on if he wanted to, but was met with silence. “You don't need to talk to me about it. You can talk to Kelly. She’s been out as a lesbian since forever. Or Logan.”

"Kelly’s a lesbian? Sick.” James thought for a moment. “Sick as in cool…not like an illness. Wait. Are you implying Logan is a lesbian or…?” 

Gustavo shook his head. “No, I'm implying you could talk to him.”

“Why him specifically?” James inquired.

“The other day, I noticed that when Kendall was talking about Jay—”

“-Jo.” James corrected it.

“Whatever,” Gustavo huffed. “He looked at you and seemed really sad. I think he knows and feels bad for you. He’s an observant kid.”

James frowned. “I don't want to make my friends feel bad.” 

“It’s natural. They care about you.” 

“It really doesn't bother you? Not the ‘maybe gay' thing…. But the ‘maybe gay for Kendall’ thing.” James asked. “It doesn't scare you at all?”

‘No,” he said with confidence. “You're all so close. I can't imagine anything really tearing you four apart. Logan seems like he just wants to help you. Carlos would probably feel the same. And if Kendall found out, he’d probably feel awkward for a moment and then go back to normal. You all just want the best for each other. It'd be sweet if it weren’t so weird for this town.”

James smiled a touched grin. “Yeah. They're the best.” 

“I can’t give you advice like Kelly probably could. I've never been in love. Man or woman. And I don't know what your situation with your parents and sexuality is, but…” Gustavo thought over his words before simply finishing, “...there's nothing wrong with you.” 

James bit his lip. “It’s hard. It’s—I don’t know… It’s new. It's—” 

“A lot?” Gustavo offered. 

James nodded. “It’s a lot.”

“It won't be a lot forever, kid.” Gustavo said, uncharacteristically soft, as he patted his knee. “You’ll figure it out. You boys always do.”
