#kana deserves the world she really does

was very distracted and almost forgot to do this! whoops.

i did finish paul takes the form of a mortal girl and don't really have anything to add beyond what i said last week. orlando is on my reserved list at my library, so be interesting to see what i think of that!

also finished the city we became, which was very much a fun time. it manages to do horror and humour and social commentary and like, comic book hero all equally well without sacrificing the value of any of those pieces individually. even when i wasn't necessarily vibing with it, i could appreciate what it was doing. also as someone who doesn't know new york very well i found it mostly accessible, but that's with years of unintended cultural osmosis so idk. don't currently have book two but it's definitely on my tbr!

have pushed on a bit with mortal coil but idk, either i'm getting burnout on these or it's the culmination of the plot points i don't like (caylan, fletcher, the looming stuff with the teenagers), or even that this one isn't read by rupert degas for some reason. think i'll take a break and come back to them either in print or at some other time.

this morning i also started maurice by e.m. forster, so i'm maybe 20 minutes in? it's a queer classic written in 1913-14 about two separate relationships in the titular maurice's life (one unhappy as a young adult and one more relaxed as an adult). interesting enough so far, with some very well written lines and laying down of ideas for later. some period-typical racism but so far no more egregious than i was expecting. the guy reading it pronounces his name like 'morris' which caught me off guard but i'm getting used to it now.

feel weird counting it (since i skipped the inter-chapter sections) but i did technically read two-thirds or so of volume two of my brother's husband (i finally have the rest!) but i don't think i can spare the time to really come back to it until i've finished ace attorney investigations 2 (which will be soon, i swear). it's still excellent btw, thoroughly recommend.

chapter 133 thoughts!

Right off the bat, I'm really glad to see OnK looping back around to address something that was largely left hanging from the first half of the movie arc - the idea that Ruby simply lacks the acting chops to properly portray Ai in the movie. This was hammered in to such a degree that I actually had a theory back before shooting started that Ruby was going to end up backing out of playing Ai and that Kana, Akane or even Frill would end up taking her place. Obviously it's not that I want Ruby to fail here or that she doesn't deserve a big W after everything she's been through but it felt really weird for the story to correctly make the point that Ruby's acting was going to make or break this movie and then not properly bring that point home. So I'm glad to see we're actually digging into it this chapter.

That said, it does feel a little... abrupt, I guess? Or rather, I totally understand Ruby cracking under the pressure and having a bit of a meltdown off the back of Nino's words last chapter - that obviously cut really deep - but suddenly jumping back to this idea that Ruby is Just Not Getting Ai after we hadn't touched on that since filming started and we've had no indication it's still an ongoing issue is weird. Especially since Mengo has literally just been flat out drawing Ai any time she's portraying her on panel lol. Maybe holding off on showing her with the double hoshigan would've been a better choice in conveying that...

Again, I guess it just comes back to what I've been saying lately about the movie arc feeling really weirdly structured. Things feel kind of jumbled, or necessarily out of order persay but the way arcs, emotional beats and development is happening in fits and spurts gives everything this stuttering rhythm where all the major beats feel like they're landing in really strange places.

All that aside... man, poor Ruby. We haven't really gotten as good a look into her head as I would've liked during the movie's production but the amount of pressure she feels must be immense. Strawberry Productions have put all their money into this movie and Ruby is telling the story of one of the people she loves more than anyone else in the world. It's no wonder she's in tears by the end of it.

The story also addresses something I'm really glad to see on the page - Kana acknowledging that Ai was the way she was largely because of her negative experiences. I've had a bit of unease lately with the idea of OnK portraying Ai as an aspirational figure or that Ruby 'becoming' or 'surpassing' Ai is a positive step for her. Ai of B-Komachi existed because Hoshino Ai experienced such an abnormally cruel life that was so utterly lacking in warmth or love that she had to make up a perfect version of herself just to feel like she had permission to be alive. It's not that Ruby has never experienced hardship - god knows she has - but she simply does not have experience with the exact nature of the despair, the loneliness and the self hate that Ai struggled with her entire life. Without opening herself up to that, she might never be able to fully understand Ai.

Kana's description of Nino is also really fascinating and it lines up with how I personally was reading her off the back of that chapter combined with the foundation laid by 45510. Her feelings for Ai are a life-altering obsession that has ripped down the boundary between 'love' and 'hate'. It's both at the same time which is an emotional state you can probably conclude is not going to lead someone to grieve in a healthy or productive way.

<3 nino is such a gay little freak i love her so much

Ruby and Kana's talk in general in this chapter is sooooo fucking good, dudes. It's hard not to want to go over it line by line lol but it's the kind of talk I've wanted them to have for a really long time. Their earnest concern for each other and their attempts to reach out and protect the other as clumsily as they end up doing it are so sweet and it makes the end of this chapter such a gut punch... but we'll get there.

I will say it's uh incredibly fucking bizarre to see Akane sorted in alongside the people Ruby considers her family??? Like, I get that Ruby had the whole 'can I call you oneechan' thing with her back while she and Aqua were dating but they've never been portrayed as being that close or really on friendly terms at all after the Private arc. Not only that, but this is specifically in a context where Ruby is talking about how the movie is going to help her family, who are still stuck in their grief over Ai's death move forward - so why the fuck is Akane there?? Akane has no personal relationship to Ai! She was not remotely affected by her death! I can only assume this was some kind of art mistake because I otherwise have absolutely no fucking clue what this is supposed to mean. EDIT: Taking a closer look at the art, I'm pretty certain this is in fact an art mistake and that's Ruby accidentally given Akane's hair screening: her eyes are dark and she seems to have Ruby's hoshigan. Mystery solved!

Ruby's face as she cries looks sooooooo much like Miyako's expression as she cried back in 125. I even noticed then how much she looked like both Ai and Ruby in that moment and it was so sad and lovely to see that similarity mirrored in Ruby. Miyako is their mom!!! Ai and Ruby are her daughters!!!

And finally... Kana just lets it all out.

Honestly, seeing Kana finally express all this stuff was so cathartic. She didn't want to be in B-Komachi to start with, she was bullied into being the center and then watched Ruby absolutely leave her in the dirt. Knowing what we do about Kana's own history of abandonment and her absolute terror at the prospect of being left behind and made irrelevant, it would be naive to assume she didn't feel some jealousy or bitterness in the wake of Ruby's meteoric rise to fame. She's only human, after all and I can't help but wonder if this is one of the 'cracks' left in black hoshigan Ruby's wake that Aqua ominously alluded to a while back.

Even as she pours out all this bile, though - Kana is still, in a twisted way, doing this out of pure love for Ruby. As she herself puts it, she is at risk of permanently destroying their relationship here even though Ruby is her closest and dearest friend. But that's why she feels she had to do it. Like always, Kana sacrifices herself, desecrates herself and throws herself under the bus to support the people she loves and to play the coordinator - to ensure her costars can give the best possible performance. Arima Kana? Don't worry about her. She's fine off in the shadows by herself, right?

I also can't help but wonder if Kana is doing this at least in part for herself, too. We saw that she, too, was struck deeply and unsettled by Nino's words last week and by how deeply Nino was poisoned by her hate and feelings of inferiority towards Ai. Maybe this is Kana's way of trying to purge herself of those feelings so she can look her inner Nino in the eye and confidently say "I am not like you".

KYOJURO RENGOKU

He's always had to be the older, more responsible one in many of his relationships

He's never really had that feeling of looking up to someone like you

Uzui still has a lot of painful memories of his family, and it was a bit concerning for him to start to see you as an older sibling

But, he does trust you, and he would do anything to keep you safe from harm, even though he knows you're more than capable of keeping yourself safe

You're literally always with him, though, so he rarely has to worry about you being out of his sight

His wives adore you, they know that when Tengen is gone for a mission that he'll come back safe because he has you with him

You both look out for each other and give each other combat tips

There's no one else he'd rather fight alongside

SHINOBU KOCHO

Ok...this one is painful

How are you so much like Kanae? She can't comprehend it

Despite the pain of being around you, how you remind her so much of her older sister, she does enjoy your company very much

When you help her craft her poisons and medicines, she appreciates the help so much

You, like Tanjiro, see right through her smiling, gentle facade and see how much anger and pain she has within her

You help her in coping with it by constantly checking in on her and making sure she's in a good mental space, something she doesn't get a lot

MITSURI KANROJI

She talks to you about E V E R Y T H I N G

You're one of the few people who know about her love for Obanai, and you're constantly trying to get them together

She shares her food with you, besides Kyojuro, you're one of the few people she eats with because you don't judge her for her enormous appetite

She's very physically affectionate, always hugging you or hanging around you in some way, she just loves being able to do that with you platonically

She's constantly admiring everything you do, you could so much as breathe in her direction and she'd be like <333333

She never has to hide who she truly is around you, and for that she is sincerely appreciative

OBANAI IGURO

He ignored you at first in all honesty

He's so used to being alone (and not to mention, he feels like he deserves to be alone) that he was somewhat anxious about you hanging around

However, he eventually warmed up to you

You encourage his relationship with Mitsuri and you know the full extent of his feelings for her

Kaburamaru also trusts you completely, and if he's not wrapped around Obanai in some way, he's wrapped around you

You're also the only one Obanai trusts with information about his past

You do your best to try and reassure him that he is not what his family made him out to be and that not everybody is out to hurt him

SANEMI SHINAZUGAWA

How in the hell did you ever manage to get close enough to him to even form a sibling-like relationship, let alone a friendship?

Sanemi...he has a lot of pain when it comes to his past, especially since it involves his family

He blames himself for everything that happened and so he feels like he doesn't deserve to have anyone be close to him

That is, until you came along

You were stubborn enough to stick with him even though he constantly told you to fuck off, threatened you, cursed at you, etc

But when he realized you weren't going anywhere, he kinda gave up and just allowed you to stick around

Your presence is very healing to him, he looks forward to seeing you

You're the only one who knows the full extent of everything he and Genya have been through, and you try to encourage Sanemi to talk to Genya and at least attempt to fix their relationship

Since he was the eldest of his siblings, Sanemi never really had someone to rely on in such a way, he always had to be the one his younger siblings went to

He has to admit though, he likes being able to have someone to go to for advice

GYOMEI HIMEJIMA

Another one who feels deeply that he doesn't deserve to have such kindness from you

He was worried about what you would do if you found out about him

Ever since...you know, what happened in his past, he worries about what people may think of him, especially someone as kind and lovely as you

Though, when you do sort of break through his stone wall (ha, GET IT) he actually opens up to you quite quickly

The trust you have in each other is unwavering, so much so that you spend a lot of time together just meditating or enjoying the scenery in silence

You do your best to assuage his guilt about what happened in his past, saying that he did what he could and that beating himself up about the past will only make him feel worse

He loves your kindness and appreciates that you're able to see him for who he really is (a lovely kind boi <3)

MUICHIRO TOKITO

Though he seems a bit out of it, Muichiro does acknowledge your presence

You remind him of someone...he just can't put his finger on it

Your protective nature toward him, it makes him think of someone he used to know (;n;)

You're always so patient with him, knowing that he has little to no memory of his past (though, Ubuyashiki's wife told you everything about it when you asked)

Though he can sometimes come off as cold and uncaring, you understand why, and through talking to him, he eventually regained some of his memories, remembering who it was you reminded him of...;u;

He's actually really lovely and kind! <3

He spends most of his time with you, discussing different topics (cloud types, bird species, etc)

Kochō Shinobu / Relationships

Shinobu's relationships and views of each of the Hashira's

Giyuu - Friends? While Shinobu does take some delight in teasing him about his awkward nature, she doesn't mind Giyuu. They both share a sense of not belonging among the pillars or having taken the place of a more deserving hashira. But while Shinobu tries to push her feelings away, Giyuu seems to be brought down by his. She does consider him a friend and wonders what his personality might be like without his personal burdens.

Kyojurou - She has a lot of admiration for his strength. Particularly, his ability to always appear with a bright smile despite the circumstances. However that sense of optimism can be overbearing and even irritating at time and she finds that they are often at odd with their world views. Still, he is someone she can depend on. But she would prefer if he was a bit quieter.

Tengen - She bickers with him the most out of everyone. It's not that she dislikes him however she will be the first to admit that he's obnoxious. He made the mistake of commenting on her hips (as in the fanbook) and she kicked him in the groin. She also reamed him over trying to take her girls to the Entertainment District mission. However, she gets along really well with his wives and likes to visit with them. They gossip about Tengen and the other men on these visits. She has teased that if they ever get sick of their meat head husband, they're more than welcome to come stay with her~

Muichirou - He's a sweet boy and she does like him. He's spent a lot of time with her while she diagnosed and attempted to treat his amnesia and she cares for him as if he were a younger brother. Muichirou seems to like the quiet gardens of the Butterfly Mansion and seems to listen to Shinobu's instructions more than some of the other hashira.

Mitsuri - While Shinobu is envious of her strength and battle prowess, she gets along well with Mitsuri. As the only girls among the standing Hashira, Shinobu says it's important that they stick together. They pair well together on missions. Shinobu thinks that if their lives had been different, perhaps they could have done more 'girl things' together. Shinobu also acts as a good buffer to Mitsuri's more 'air headed' nature. But she thinks she's charming even so.

Obanai - They get along well. Obanai's more argumentative and abrasive nature doesn't bother Shinobu and instead they tend to work well together. He has even helped her milk venomous snakes for her research. She also knows about his crush on Mitsuri and thinks they would make a good pair.

Sanemi - Sometimes it's a bit awkward to be around him because of his relation to Kanae however they do get along. He checks in on her when he has the chance and relates the best to her more angry and vengeful side. She trusts him and knows that Kanae did as well. After Kanae's death, he asked if it wouldn't be better for her to stay at the mansion and continue her research in safety, perhaps out a desire to protect her in Kanae's place. However when she admitted to her need for revenge against the demon that killed her sister, he said he respected it and would support her. That meant a lot.

Gyoumei - He's the one person that Shinobu is completely honest with. He's the one that save her and Kanae after the deaths of their parents and she owes him her life. In their time training together, she's come to rely on him. He's the only person she'll cry in front of.

2. What does Ruby think of the industry?

As Sarina and as a kid she used to think that it was a magical place where all your dreams came true. A place where you went and everything has magical, where you earned a lot of money and were surrounded by love and compliments the whole time. You know, typical view you have as a kid.

Now she knows it is a place where you have to be cautious, watch your words and who you talk to, a place where you are forced to use a mask and tell naughty lies to survive, with time, she has learned that she really has to be careful if she doesn't want to get in trouble. She still loves being an idol, but doesn't ignore how rough being in the industry can be.

3. How does Ruby view Kana/MemCho?

Despite her relationship with Kana starting with the left foot, Ruby loves and respects very much Kana and Mem, they are her two favorite people in the world. She thinks that they are very talented, wonderful girls who deserve the world and will always be grateful to them for being part of B-Komachi with her.

She wants them to be happy, and would always be there for both of them. They are also the last two people she wants to get harmed by her revenge plans, so she tries to not get them involved at all.

4. Can Ruby act? Has she considered acting before?

Not professionally, but she has a lot of potential! In the plays made in school, she would always get the leading role and perform very well. With some practice and dedication, she would be a great actress, thou I don't think she would be in the level of Kana or Akane.

She has considered acting, but once she has stopped being an idol, due to her wanting to focus on her idol career. Thou she wouldn't say no if she was offered to play a minor role in some movie or series.

5. Whats a crossover verse you really enjoy with your muse, and what are some headcanons you have FOR said verse?

I love roleplaying with @slayingblades! Currently, the two threads we have with Mitsuri and Tanjiro are two of my favorites! We are roleplaying in an Academy verse so not too much about the universe of Kimetsu no Yaiba (demons, breathing stuff, etc), but I would very much love to one day rp Ruby in that universe!

Some headcanons I have for a verse where Ruby is a demon hunter would be:

★ Her father is a Lower Moon (he got transformed after Ai got pregnant) who sent a regular demon to kill her mother and the kids.

★ Ai died but Aqua and Ruby got saved by their babysitter, Miyako, who was secretly a demon hunter with the mission of keeping an eye on the Hoshino family.

★ Miyako took Aqua and Ruby under her wing, the twins decided to be demon hunters at a young age and she trained them.

★ Ruby's breathing would be sound breathing like Uzui's, due to her being related to music.

★ She still had a previous life as Sarina Tendouji where she was offered to become a demon to get healed (pretty much like Muzan), but she died before taking the opportunity. She got reincarnated due to a demon blood art but doesn't quite remember her past life, at least at the beginning.

★ Eventually, she discovers that her father was responsible for her mother and Doctor Gorou's dead (she regains her memories after finding the doctor's corpse), and decides she is going to hunt him and kill him.

InoAoi FanFic Chapter 7

Inosuke watched in confusion as Aoi continued cleaning dishes as if nothing had just happened

"Aoi, why'd ya react that way when I said Kanao's name?" Inosuke asked curiously

"I'm glad you learnt her name" Aoi said, ignoring his question

"THAT DOESN'T ANSWER THE QUESTION!!!" Inosuke yelled

"Fine! I'll tell you" she took a deep breath in "Kanae, the name you called Kanao, was the name of mine, Kanao's and nee-san's older sister "

"Shinobu doesn't have an older sister, right?"

"Our late older sister. . ." she said, trying not to cry again

"Why doesn't she come early then?" Inosuke suggested obliviously

Aoi face palmed "Our dead older sister" she corrected

Inosuke remained silent at this

Aoi tried to change the subject "Inosuke, why did you say that it was a good thing? When I said that I wasn't in love with Tanjiro?"

"Monjiro doesn't deserve you, also I love you more" he said straight forwardly after processing the thing about Kanae

Aoi smiled, then she processed what he had just said "Wait, what did you say?"

"I said 'Monjiro doesn't deserve you, also I love you more'"

"Yo-You love me?" she stuttered uncontrolabaly

"Yeah? Can I not?"

"You mean. . . as a friend, right? Not like. A lover" she said, flustered

"both" he said blatantly. He turned to Aoi and smiled at her cutely, who knew he could actually look cute?

Aoi's face turned a bright shade of red "Really?" she said quietly

"Yeah? Why wouldn't I love you?" Inosuke said, looking at Aoi like she was being the stupidest lady on earth

Zenitsu could hear all this from his room with his superhuman hearing, he started paying closer and closer attention to their question.

"Does that mean, that you. . . love me?"

"Wasn't that part obvious? You're the most perfect woman in the world" he stated obliviously "Why is your face all red"

"Y-You never told me that. . ." she muttered out of the corner of her mouth cutely

"I thought you knew?" he said in his loud-ish brash voice, it was almost impossible to imagine him whispering, it'd just sound like his voice was begging for a glass if water

"Well in that case" She whispered, as if she knew Zenitsu could hear her "I love you too"

Inosuke's eyes widened, It was weird to see him actually surprised

"I love you too, oka-" she was cut off

Inosuke kissed her on the mouth silently. Aoi's eyes widened, seeing Inosuke's face directly on hers. He held it for a couple seconds, which felt like an eternity to her. After he let go he met her surprised gaze with nothing but a smile. Aoi stood there looking at him, her jaw dropped.

“W-W-Why did you do that?!” She was feeling weirdly flustered

Inosuke’s smile faded “Did you not like it” he asked, getting dangerously close to her face

“I-I never said that” Aoi stuttered uncontrollably

Inosuke raised a brow “Well did you like it then?”

Aoi blushed harder “Well I did . . . but it was still uncalled for”

“I really couldn’t care less”

She looked away from him “You should go to bed now”

Inosuke came closer to her face “Can I stay here for a bit longer?” his smile was more beautiful than Aoi had expected.

Aoi took a frying pan and banged it on his head “What part of go to bed don’t you get?!”

Aoi couldn’t have been out of the room faster

Inosuke opened the door to his, Tanjiro’s,  and Zenitsu’s room. Tanjiro looked confused, Zenitsu was waiting for him with a smirk.

Inosuke narrowed his eyes “Why do you look like a snake, Zampitsu?” Inosuke said as an insult

Zenitsu looked insulted for a second, his smirk suddenly returned to his face “I heard everything”

Inosuke’s eyes widened “You did?”

“Mhm” he nodded

Tanjiro looked at them with an oblivious smile on his face “Heard what?”

“I couldn’t care less, Zampitsu”

NHK free dance thoughts!

Wolfkostin and Chen: I don't think they've had a good twizzle in any competition, and that fall on the lift was rough. It's so annoying that they have such amazing music, and yet barely use it. MIDA should have started with novice and junior teams, and maybe one senior. Having multiple up and coming senior teams in their first season as an ice dance school was such a mistake.

Orihara and Pirenen: I liked their first lift, they need to work on mitigating their traveling during the stationary part, or they will encounter a STATIONARY LIFT BASE? situation, and no one wants that. They have moments of nice edges, and then moments of nothing but flats. They need to work on flow between elements.

Team Koko: Their packaging in both programs is so awful, it's tragic. The music does nothing for them. Uninspired lifts and they just aren't where they need to be technically, they never have been. The music is a snooze. I don't understand the placement of their one foot section, it should be much earlier, their twizzles should be on the music change. Blue skinned tentacle headed woman from the fifth element deserves better than this, also she hops in her twizzles, and its distracting.

Wang and Liu: Very cool arm movements in the one foot, that curve lift is wild as hell! I think its lacking in transition in places, and they are on two feet a lot, also way too many crossovers, etc. The entrance into the character step was very cool and they use the music very well. I think it ended very strong. It's okay, not amazing.

Lopareva and Brissaud: Was that voice over always there or did I just repress it? Guillaume really did them dirty with this program; its melodramatic, simple, and predictable. They also have very short, stilted stroking and don't finish their crossovers, which is a huge pet peeve of mine. Very messy arms in the one foot, they also skate through some musical touches that could really enhance the program.

Kanadai: Lord save me from all POTO programs, including ones that are nothing but distracting razzle dazzle. Their lifts always make me so nervous, Kana is so strong for trusting Dai to lift her. They were very off on the twizzles, the fact they got positive goe is a joke. Marina has brought back her Charlie-White-running-on-the-ice-special for Dai and its just as awful as it was then. They lose speed so easily, he never straightens his free leg, and the last lift literally had me holding my breath thinking they were gonna fall any second.

Reed and Ambrulevicius: Loved their first lift, they always choose a cool and unique piece of music for their free dances. They really commit to the movement, which is great. I liked their free dance last season better. For me the program got a little boring in the middle, but a fun sliding movement. She looked like she was having a blast the whole time, which is great. A very cool dance lift!

Green and Parsons: God, this program is such a miss, it is very 11th place team from 2012 worlds. Her dress looks like it was put together from fabric donated from an old folks home. The choreography is uninspiring, I just don't have much to say, because they have nothing to say in that free dance. The music starts, they do some stuff, and then its over.

Chock and Bates: Her dress is hideous, it looks like it belongs on the 15th place skater at worlds in 1994. Evan's movements, no matter what, look bad, I don't know why, but it just looks stiff and awkward. With the music change, the straight line lift doesn't hit as hard. The music change also did absolutely nothing for them, this program is trash. I don't get what its supposed to be or what's happening, I just know I'm bored.

Fournier-Beaudry and Sorensen: A beautiful program that suits them, it may be Spanish Caravan part two, but they skate it well. They still aren't skating full out, I wonder if they ever will be able to because of Nik's knee. Even with a small twizzle error, they looked so great. The best their straight line lift has looked, Nik didn't look shaky like he has before. This win is so huge for them, and they deserved it.

comes randomly at you with a question: what would kanae think about shinobu's revenge/hatred driven actions in your au where she survived douma's attack? I don't believe shinobu's plans would be suicidal in that case, but she would still be angry and wanting revenge.

First of all, you are always welcome to throw random questions my way! This one is one of particular interest to me too.

So I really wanted to stay as true to canon as I possibly could with Kanae’s newfound status. I’ve written her for a long time and was really reluctant to make an official verse because I didn’t want to take away from Shinobu’s or Kanao’s character arcs. I’ve mulled over countless ways Kanae could live for this reason, and I settled on my most recent post as the best compromise because Kanae is suffering physically. I was tempted to take away her vision, but I thought that was too cruel because Kanae’s world revolves around seeing beautiful things. She wants to watch Shinobu and Kanao grow and smile. I didn’t want to rob her of the opportunity to look at flowers either... since Kanae deserves good things 😔

But to answer your question, I wrote this verse with two routes in mind.

Route 1) Shinobu becomes fiercely protective of her family’s safety, which drives her to find the most effective ways to kill demons. In doing so, it drives her to the extremes we see. No demon will ever touch her sister again.

Route 2) Shinobu becomes incredibly vindictive (as we see in canon), but her phrasing shifts to more ‘This is how my sister suffers, so I’d like you to experience that suffering too.’ towards demons. Rather than Kanae’s death as the principal founder in Shinobu’s rage, it becomes that suffering Shinobu witnesses each day.

These are based on my reading of Shinobu and can definitely vary by portrayal! But this is what I’m basing the answer to your question on.

I think Kanae will feel like she failed in a way. I’m reminded of the panel in which she tells Shinobu to never give up no matter the cost, and I think her defeat feels remniscent of that. In turn, she’s failed to protect Shinobu. As an older sister, that seems shameful. After their family’s death, Kanae recognizes she’s now added to Shinobu’s trauma and hatred. I think Kanae feels guilty for that and does her best to sway Shinobu to retire and find a normal life because she doesn’t want to see Shinobu lose herself to rage. However, Kanae knows she would be a hypocrite to push her beliefs onto Shinobu. She may try to convince Shinobu that revenge for her failures is not a burden Shinobu should carry, but I refer to the above point that seeing Kanae’s suffering would be a reminder of what demons have done to their family. I think it would result in some arguing, and Kanae would try to pull Shinobu into more of a healing role as best she could. But Shinobu is Shinobu, and Kanae recognizes she can only offer her sister so much guidance.

Futaba is undoubtedly one of my favorite characters both personality wise and because I love seeing someone overcome some INTENSELY heavy baggage and find True, Pure, Unfiltered joy with their new support system and just ;-;

Her confidant story was pretty strong in my opinion.

Like 70% of it is entirely focused on Futaba's anxieties and personal growth and I LOVE THE HELL outta that portion, and then 30% is a shockingly horrible tale about her old friend's living situation and us helping her out of it.

I'd argue the 30% wasn't my favorite but I don't have "too" much of a long winded complaint. (I lied, I found it fun to talk about and read-more'd it. I do recommend if you find the use of the PT as a form of personal reflection for the villains in each narrative and the devs varied success in conveying this 'properly' it's a fun little train of thought below!)

It left me uncomfortable hearing of parents forcing their child (a minor ofc) to take provocative photos to sell online, but it was supposed to make me uncomfortable. That's good!

The worst I can complain on is the too-easily-forgiven happy ending just felt bad, man. It's one of those narrative hooks they really should have given the respect and attention of a solid and honest consequence laden ending, but because it's supposed to be side content- hell it's supposed to be side content inside of side content as Futaba's friend isn't even a major portion of her confidant growth- they didn't grant it that.

So instead of tackling Kana's situation in a way that grants the villains of that story proper consequences and takes the time to ensure Kana is given a happy ending that, I don't know, doesn't involve still living with her parents, we just get the cookie cutter "And they had a change of heart and are good people now :)" ending.

That ending works for like 99% of the events in this game, truly it does! Because most of the requests and the like revolve around people falling into bad mindsets that can be forgiven and grown from in a day to a week's time. Most "bad people" we grant changes of heart are people who haven't done irreparable harm- they've done harm, 100%, but not irreparably. They can take the counseling-esque treatment the PT offer through their heart changing methods and come out of it capable of asking forgiveness and proving they deserve it through properly changing their ways going forward.

A thief can give back their score; A cheater can admit their doings and make it up to their victims; A bully can apologize and prove they mean it through earnest kindness.

This wasn't really one of those; It was much more like some of the major villains who bring intense harm to others and are granted not just a change of heart- but welcome the consequences of their actions to properly make up for what they initially put out in the world.

Like I ain't saying some bullshit "Shoulda gone to prison because arbitrarily locking people up makes things better :)" phrasing, though that's honestly a potential way to do just what I'm asking.

I'm saying this wasn't a simple "We're sorry" and fade to black scenario. It'd make more sense for the parents to relinquish guardianship to like a grandparent we're taught is kind-hearted or something. It's a touch weird- but it's also, undoubtedly, 100%, something I'm not supposed to dwell on, lmao.

To close I would like to share a couple tidbits and draw a parallel with another request that seemingly fulfills the same initial goals, but better.

Kana's request is called "Daughter's just a meal ticket". It implies the worst of the narrative is how her parent's are using her for money. To be honest that's okay, but I think it's worth pointing at as it carries a sense that the dehumanizing use is the focal point rather than exactly what she is being made to do for money. I do think it works in the context of avoiding having a painfully uncomfortable request title.

Hifumi's request is called "Upstaging the stage mother". It's a lot less clear on what the problem is but here's the thing. Hifumi's story IS ALSO about a parent using their child for money. It's ALSO about a parent devaluing their child's life and using them for personal gain.

It also has added narrative value as it has interesting reasoning for the initial desire's mutation. Whereas Kana's parent's are said to have just always been gamblers and then carelessly began abusing their child for gain, Hifumi's mother is said to have fallen into a spiral of self doubt after failing to meet her stardom dreams, so she's twisted the idea of giving her child the success she never had into a web of lies, disrespect, and a lack of empathy towards what Hifumi wishes to do with her life.

This isn't meant to be me saying "Hifumi has a great story and request!" it's me saying these are two requests about a parent or parents using their child for money, but only one of them makes sense for a change of heart to be a near immediate recovery to all involved.

Hifumi's mother realizing that what she is doing is wrong makes total sense in terms of everyone involved getting better and being happy shortly after!

Kana? Not so much.

Kana's parents suddenly realize what they did was wrong and Kana.... continues to live with her abusers? Sure they aren't that anymore, but that's just a weird "Happy Ending" compared to the much more acceptable Hifumi tale with a similar overarching 'crime'.

Hideyoshi: Guillermo De La Cruz from What We Do In The Shadows. The human friend of a man eating monster, he’s a sweet guy who does his best to be a good person but has also committed countless crimes. His monster boyfriend is an idiot so he became very good at lying and manipulating and committing felonies to keep him safe. He offers himself up to be bitten because he is gay and stupid yet somehow the smartest one here

Touka: Rachel Berenson from Animorphs. She’s a pretty girl who can, will, and WANTS to fuck people up. Nishiki: Jeff Winger from Community. He’s a smartass pretty boy who acts better than everyone but he probably doesn’t know how to unclog a drain. He acts superior to everyone to avoid getting close to anyone but instead he gets bullied so hard he accidentally makes friends

Koma: Pam Poovey from Archer. He’s a bad bitch who’s here for a good time, not a long time. He will do whatever it takes to have fun and causes problems on purpose. He randomly drops wild shit he’s done like it’s a normal thing to talk about and he will fuck his way in and out of any situation

Hinami: Gus from Sweet Tooth. She’s just a little guy but the government wants her dead because she isn’t human. She just wants to look at flowers and read books and vibe but she’s on the run from the law and survives because she is literally too adorable for her caretakers to stop protecting her

Shuu Tsukiyama: Draluc from The Vampire Dies In No Time. He’s rich, he’s pathetic, he will die if a gust of wind hits him too hard. His family loves him and supports his weird shit because they are just as weird and he’s head over heels for a man who wants to kill him so bad. He is a twink by birth and a bastard by choice

Kanae von rosewald: Horse from Centaurworld. He has never stopped working and preparing to fight a day in his life and if he ever relaxes it is against his will. He wants to commit war crimes so bad but his family makes him sit down and feed birds instead. He has seen boundless horrors and has never recovered, experiences dysphoria, and he is drizzled in glitter by force more often then he wants to admit

Ayato: Wolf from Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts. He’s been on his own after fleeing a family he believes betrayed him and has survived by killing and stealing. He fully expects everyone to try to kill or eat him, has too much trauma to be contained in his tiny body and refuses to admit that he wants his sister more than anything. Itori: Nadja of Antipaxos from What We Do In The Shadows. Shes hot and bisexual and lives to fuck and cause problems. If there’s an issue she gets her husbands or people too scared to say no to her to take care of it and watches while yelling at them as shit goes down. Seidou: Alvin Murphy from Z Nation. He wants to be appreciated and looked up to and absolutely hates the woman who is in charge instead of him. he was experimented on against his will until he was no longer human and At first he was sad and pissed about it, but then he was sad and pissed and fucking batshit about it. Once he’s suffered enough he said “fuck it” and decides to be a king of death but remains exactly as scared and weird and pathetic as he was when he was a lab rat

Akira: Eva Stratt from Project Hail Mary. She takes Gaslight Gatekeep Girlboss to a whole new level and will hand her superiors a note that says “I can do what I want” and get away with it. She will make painful decisions and do horrible things to make the world into what she defines as better, even if she has to send her friends to die. She is definitely autistic and deserves to get away with as many crimes as she wants

Amon: Aziraphale from Good Omens. He is doing his best to rid the world of evil but after interacting with one of the evil beings he’s supposed to hate he questioned his entire ideology. He is so tired and so depressed because he has Chronic Catholic Disease and is deeply ashamed of how horny he is for his coworkers

Urie: Catra from Shera and the Princesses of Power. His family is dead and he was groomed by an organization bent on genocide and he goes full speed ahead into it. He fills the void in his soul where love should be with promotions and would sabotage his own coworkers to get it. The only thing that can save him from himself is a slap in the face and homosexual activities

Saiko: Stat from Q-force. None gender with left lesbian, she wants to play games and look at anime tiddies. She was put into a government squad by force and while she grew to genuinely care about her team she would still rather cause flame wars on reddit then go to work

Shirazu: Genya Shinazugawa from Demon slayer. He’s a sharp toothed tall bastard who gained traits from the creatures he works to eradicate to get stronger. He didn’t really believe in the creed of his job, and he questions if what he is doing is right from time to time, but he doesn’t fight for himself or an ideology. He joined because he wants to keep his sibling safe and close to him, but to do so he must endure awful things. He should have gotten a better ending he’s just a dude

Mutsuki: The Elk from Centaurworld. He changes himself so drastically in the hopes of becoming someone he and other people can love, and not always for the best. He works hard and is afraid of being understood, but he craves it to such an extent that he will do anything to appeal to the people around him, even harming himself and turning himself into something awful that ends up causing more pain than it alleviates, and he needs his wretched goop brain scooped up and mashed together to make him fucking chill. He looks cold and wet at all times and he needs to communicate better

Because if I read right, she is a girl disguising herself as a boy so that’s what I would call her like as well, though I’m not sure since she is a similar complicated case to look at like as with Mutsuki. 🌹She is extremely devoted as shown in manga and show and seems to share some resemblances regarding that with her masterShuu Tsukiyama. She is lovestruck and obsessive over her darling. And it honestly doesn’t matter if Kanae’s darling is a ghoul or a human, she’ll be completely enamored with them and is not above being a bit of a stalker, though she prefers to be near them whenever she can. She also really just wants to know her darling better and I also believe that she wants her darling to know her better as well since she has to constantly hide that she is biologically a woman disguised as a man since she promised her family this. I might interpret it wrong, but the one quote from her (“The sorrows of life, to not be able to live like yourself. The joys of life, to be able to die like yourself. Do I deserve to be happy...) had me personally thinking that she actually wanted to live as a female, but was just stuck in a tricky position. She is similar to Shu a manipulative Yandere, though at the bottom of her heart she means well. Most of the times at least.

🌹Looking at her past and the fact that she lost all her family makes her quite overprotective as well. She is without a doubt a drama Queen and especially if her darling would be human, she would worry a lot and throw a fit as soon as they happen to scrape their knees a bit. She is not a sadist or anything like this, at the very least this isn’t what she shares with her master, though Tsukiyama later on changes too. But she just worries about her darling a bit too much. Kanae is also pretty delusional. It isn’t like she thinks you love her as well, but she just justifies terrifying things she does with her love. She only protects the person she loves and in her eyes it might even be a honorable thing to do because isn’t that pretty romantic? Picture her as quite affectionate and a subtle worshipper as well.

🌹In that regard she can be a lot like her master. Both are extreme drama Queens and next to that Kanae is just extremely easily triggered into jealousy. Judging from the way she always was jealous because her master was so close to Chie, a human girl, and she literally threatened her and got jealous when Chie told her that she wouldn’t kill him because otherwise Shuu might be sad. It isn’t like she stops you from socializing, she has her work to do as well. But she also feels threatened when someone gets too close to you and you treat them the same way she wants to be treated by you. She’s flamboyant and causes a huge scene when she’s jealous and she is not above threatening the other person later on as well.

🌹A good way to describe her is loyal and fervent as a lover. Kanae is ready to wander to the end of the world and back if it proves to be the best for her darling. Whilst she is overly dramatic and certainly the type to throw actual hands of someone makes you uncomfortable or her jealousy just gets the better of her, it stays that way most of the time. That said, she is prepared to engage in a actual fight with lots of blood involved if she thinks it’s the best for her darling in a long shot or if the person is a threat for her relationship with you.

🌹Kind of think she wouldn’t do this since she wants a happy life from which she doesn’t always thinks that she deserves it, but she craves it nevertheless. She is more or less semi-aware, but as mentioned also justifies bodies she leaves behind as threats which had to be erased for you. She is pretty much sometimes in total distress when she has to make harder decisions which could end up with you hating her which she won’t handle well since she is attached, extremely. She most likely wouldn’t do something unless her darling tries to leave her.

🌹Pure drama Queen, but she’s also quite lovely and a total sweet talker. Totally wants her darling to call her by her real name Karren and most likely calls them nicknames in her mother language. She does quite a lot of things for you, playing the violin to you or sewing clothes and repairing clothes if you happened to tear them somehow apart. She is quite dreamy and everyone in the household will find out that she is in love and she might at one point introduce you to the Tsukiyama household since she loves them as well and they’re her family who she also loves. She wants you and them to be on good terms.

black rose arc, black rose arc, oh black rose arc!!! by you adding how do i feel about the arc in general you are unleashed me to make a long post giving my very disorganized thoughts about this arc.

a couple of people call it a filler arc? i guess technically it is because it does not directly contribute to the main storyline and it wasn't in the manga and also the ending of the arc sort of makes it so the whole arc kind of didn't happen???

but also i think if a person labeled it as a filler arc they are kind of missing the point?? even if it doesn't contribute to the main plot (which it absolutely DOES but i'll get to that) it adds so much nuance to the characters of utena.

you get to see side characters and how they tick!! some of which like kozue and shiori become very important later as they become miki and ruka's rose brides in the akio arc! (side note : what was up with ruka he just kind of showed up and disappeared lmaooo)

also, it adds to akio! (tw warning for only the next paragraph, i'm talking about akio so you can except me talking about grooming and abuse)

not only is this where akio is introduced, but he is always so omnipresent. it was ... honestly really terrifying to see how chill he acts with utena here. of course the real grooming begins in the akio arc but you can see how he starts here. how he kind of builds himself as anthy's cool older brother that utena can trust and ask for advice for... but we the audience know that he CANNOT be trusted as even know we see him being shady af in the background. i really feel like if we skipped straight from the first arc to akio arc a lot of the creepiness of akio would not have been realized because of ... just how NORMAL he akio acts to utena. he's charming, he's smart, and he overall is somebody utena SHOULD be able to trust bc we should all be able to trust an immediate family member of a best friend , but of course the world doesn't really work that way. anyway akio tangent over because BOOOOOO akio (he honestly terrifies me so much because of how many predators like that exist and you can meet without realizing their intentions)

BACK TO BLACK ROSE ARC

one of the main reasons i feel like this isn't a filler arc, at least not in the traditional sense of the phrase, is because it builds a lot character relationships. something that i didn't like when i first watched revolutionary girl utena but now is one of my FAVORITE things is that for a while we don't really get a straight forward utena/anthy episode. because their relationship doesn't need to build in an episode, it just slowly builds over time. we just see these two causally existing and they just start to trust each other.

in the akio arc we get to see just how close utena/anthy have gotten over the series because of their late night conversations. like how if the black rose arc didn't exist akio wouldn't have been as impactful, if the black rose arc didn't exist it would feel more sudden how close utena/anthy have grown imo.

this arc adds a lot to the world as well. as long as the students stay inside of school they will not grow. dead people wander the halls thinking that they are still alive. these two facts contribute a lot to utena theorizing and analysis (mainly, the ideas that ohtori exists within a plain of frozen time literally because of anthy's magic and metaphorically because the cast is very cozy in their coffin) and i could not thank this arc for that enough. not only are these very cool ideas that may or may not have inspired elements in my own story (i can neither confirm or deny that one of my oc story is heavily inspired by utena) but they just add so many layers!

this arc also felt necessary because of the new duelists??? if we went straight from the first arc to the akio arc then it would've kinda gotten very tiring to see the student council constantly duel and lose to utena (with the exception of touga's sole victory to utena in the first arc before she duels him again and wins) but these new duelists possessed by the black rose are very interesting!

if i did have to make a compliant about this arc, though, i will say that at times the stories felt very disconnected to each other. while it was very funny for utena to not even know who keiko was when she dueled her, it would've been nice if sometimes the arc of the black rose duelist intertwined more with utena. as the arc goes on, the student council is on alert and is trying to figure out where the black rose is coming from, but they never really try to ask utena about it and utena never really tries to get involved? she just is chill until she gets the note to go to the duel arena to fight the black rose duelist. i don't really have a solution on how to fix this? maybe have the student council member that the black rose duelist takes the sword from be more involved? idk.

the villain of this arc mikage also really fascinates me??? i... really like him??? but not even as a villain ... i just really pity him. the realization he has in his duel with utena that everything he has been doing is for nothing because mamiya is already dead .. that always really hit me? the horror in his voice when he starts to recall the truth in his false memories.... for some reason, this is one of the most terrifying parts of the show for me. the realization that something you were doing, something you were doing that might've been awful but you were doing it because of somebody you care about deeply and love, it was all for nought. how much time he has wasted...

even before his duel with utena, there's this moment when after he got punched by utena he says something like "if she hadn't seen my duelist ring and challenged me to a duel, she could've killed me" or something like that, he's just so pathetic and i feel very bad for him but at the same time am too disconnected to him to truly feel empathy for him... that's some TOP TIER shit

overall, this part of the show is one of my favorites. the only part i like more is the last few episodes because it makes me very emotional.

NOW FOR THE SPECIFICS

favorite black rose duelist: honestly? wakaba. the girl deserves it this is stress relief for her. not only is this duel very emotional as i don't think we've ever seen utena refuse to duel somebody (at least not in the way that she does in this episode) but just the SHEER emotion.

i'm a real sucker for fighting the person you care about the most which is why the dark signer arc in yugioh 5ds is the best yugioh arc and this just really takes the cake in this arc. utena always shows concern for the black rose duelist because they are clearly people in pain who were not able to properly duel with their grief which let mikage manipulate them, but it's taken to a new level here.

the way that after the duel is completed, wakaba comes home to her empty dorm where saionji used to be but now isn't always gets me. she's just such a lonely girl and that's never really resolved for her. a lot of the other duelists have a optimist note to end on (kozue asking miki for a milkshake, shiori and juri saying hello to each other as they walk past, keiko being friends with nanami again, etc.) which is why the fact that wakaba is more alone now then she is ever... it is a feeling i can relate to an almost embarrassing amount.

favorite episode: COWBELL OF HAPPINESS, NANAMI TURNS INTO A COW-

favorite episode that isn't cowbell of happiness: i'm very torn between the landscape scaped by kozue and thorns of death. shiori and kozue are both very interesting characters that i like a lot. but i'm going to go with thorns of death for now, as while i really like the landscape scaped by kozue, i think my preferred miki/kozue episode is their episode in the akio arc. meanwhile i like thorns of death way more than i liked whispers in the arc (mostly because i just do not really care that much for ruka, but azure paler than the sky was a banger and he was in that?) i just loved the feeling of seeing shiori the girl juri loves so much and juri's reaction to seeing her. the way my heart was wrenched when black rose shiori mocks juri... it really did hit different. but the hopeful ending did make me feel a lot better. i do like the way that juri out of all the student council members is the one closest to self actualization and this really sets that up even if there is still a bumpy road until then.

honorary mention: the boys of the black rose and kanae as a black rose duelist are both really great. i feel like if this wasn't the arc opener it would've had more room to stretch its legs and show how horrific it could've been. kanae is a girl i feel really bad about and similar to wakaba, i don't really think her episode was a very optimistic ending for her especially since akio probably killed her later in the show?

honestly the minute akip appeared on screen, engaged to a girl who HASN'T EVEN GRADUATED and is also emotionally manipulating her so much and having his little sister manipulate her too... throw the whole man away

tl;dr - the black rose arc is very good and i like it a lot, the ending of the arc really fucks me up, somebody give mikage & all the black rose duelists therapy, throw akio in the garbage, and this show probably exists in some sort of time loop / frozen time space as a metaphor for the whole coffin thing but you can probbaly find people smarter than me talking about that.

How would a relationship between Eto and Arima work?

Hello, non! I think you’re asking me for headcanons, but I’m bad at coming up with fic headcanons on the spot so I’m going to give you a meta instead. Arima and Eto are foils, and exact opposite which is what makes their relationship an interesting one. Basically it all revolves around the idea of control, Eto takes control whenever she can, and Arima lets himself be controlled by others. I’ll cover more under the cut. 

1. In the Case of Arima Kishou.

Arima has never for a single moment in his life been treated like a fully fledged human. Not only was he literally born a half-human and labeled subhuman from birth, but he was raised inside the garden in order to serve the Washuu Family. 

He bows and acts subservient to his own bastard father, right in front of his half brother. It’s important to notice this one difference between Arima and Eto which is the source of all their other differences. Arima was born inside the cage, Eto was born outside of the cage. 

Every single one of Arima’s actions takes place inside of this framework, this thinking mentality, he is always inside the cage no matter what he does. That’s why even his attempts at rebellion he does while still pretending to be inside the cage and loyal to the Washuu. 

Arima was raised to be a tool. As a result he only knows how to be a tool. He doesn’t see himself as anything other than that, nor does he see any future possibilities for himself. There are two things that prevent him from trying to be anything other than a tool. The first being that even if Arima tried to live his own life, he would be dead in a few years anyway. He sees his time as already up.

The second is that Arima HATES himself. He doesn’t believe he deserves to be anything other than a tool. He feels such intense guilt for killing people for so long under the Washuu’s orders that even if a second chance were offered to him he wouldn’t take it. 

This is also a flaw shared between Arima and Eto. Both of them hate the world that created them. However, because they were so shaped by that world they can’t really see themselves being any better than the system that made them. They seek to deestroy the system, but they themselves can’t come up with anything better to replace it, which is why both of them pawn the job off on someone else. 

Arima hates the world he lives in, and also hates himself the same way Eto does but he’s too broken himself to fix it. He doens’t even think he can be fixed. Arima, always, always, views himself as a tool. Even in his act of rebellion, he’s merely becoming Eto’s tool rather than the tool of the Washuu. 

2. In the Case of Yoshimura Eto

If Arima sees himself as a tool then Eto sees herself as an author. Arima was born inside, Eto was born outside. Eto’s perspective will always, always, always be that of an outsider looking in unable to join anyone else. In a way that relationship is convenient for them. Arima wants someone to control him, and Eto wants to pretend to be in control. 

Eto views herself as an author writing the story of the world. Authors have complete and total control of a fictional world. In essence they’re the gods of the worlds they create. Eto herself even flirts with the idea of being like god. 

God granted people knowledge, and power, and she’s seen granting both to other characters. She gives an apple to Kanae to give her power. She constantly gives away information about V and the Washuu to Kaneki in an attempt to sway him to her side, and into doing what she wants. 

The same way that Arima is just so good at performing his job as a CCG Officer, Eto is just so good at reading people and predicting their actions that she can manipulate them to a certain extent. She’s usually so good at manipulating that she can pretend she is in control when she isn’t. She’s good enough, that she imagines herself as the author creating all these scenarios. 

However, she ends up roughly in the same place as Arima. Neither of them is able to move past the circumstances that created them. Arima can’t stop being a prisoner in the cage, and Eto will never not be an outsider. Which is why Eto, who likes to pretend to be in control, her final action is to beg. 

Arima always chose to give up control, Eto always chose to take it, however they were both equally broken to the point where neither of them thought they could continue on, which is why ultiamtely we see coming from two different places they share the same fate: both of them choose to die together.

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. That’s how it goes, right? You’ve never really thought too much about it, but now – looking at her – you can see the truth behind it.

You wish she would speak more. When she does, her voice echoes in your head, lingers until you dream. You know that he’s had a troubled past, but you never really asked her much about it. It was actually Kanae and Shinobu who told you about her, back when she first arrived to the Butterfly Estate. Like the others there, you’re an orphaned child, but you’ve found a family with these other girls.

Everyone is like a sister to you; well, besides Kanao. Something about her makes your heart flutter, your insides tingle. Even when she flashes you the tiniest of smiles, your nerves go into a panic. She’s beautiful, remarkably so, and her sword fighting skills are impeccable. Okay, so what if you’ve been madly in love with her since first sight? There’s nothing much you can really do, anyway.

But that doesn’t stop you from trying to win her affections. No, you try night and day, being in her company and attempting to bring that lovely smile to her face whenever possible. It’s difficult, especially with her timid nature, but it pushes you to try even harder. She deserves all the love and affection in the world, and by the gods you’ll be damned if you don’t deliver.

Even now, as you stand behind her, absentmindedly braiding her hair, your heart beats wildly in your chest. You’ve taken to doing the others’ hair for quite some time now, often finding it to be rather soothing for both them and you. Being the appointed big brother of the group, it’s your sole duty to protect each and every one of them, along with providing some comfort and guidance. However, you hope deep down inside that Kanao doesn’t see you the same way. No, you want to be a man in her eyes. You want to be her future lover.

“Your hair is really soft,” you murmur, breaking yourself away from your thoughts.

Kanao hums, pulling her coin from a pocket and giving it a quick flip. You nearly sigh at her habit, but if that’s what makes her happy, then sobeit. “Thank you,” she then says, her voice soft. Your heart flutters. “You’re quite good at braiding hair.”

“What can I say? I’ve had practice.” Although she can’t see you, you still send her a smile.

“It makes me wonder… What else are you good at?”

Jerking away, you drop the finished braid; your eyes go wide as Kanao turns around, her pretty features contorted with confusion and amusement.

“What’s the matter, (y/n)?”

Oh gods, the way she says your name. She has to be a blessing sent from above, truly. It’d make sense as to why your heart feels like it’s about to fly out of your chest. “W-well… That depends… What do you want to know?”

Kanao’s lips curl into a smile. “Show me.”
