was very distracted and almost forgot to do this! whoops.

i did finish paul takes the form of a mortal girl and don't really have anything to add beyond what i said last week. orlando is on my reserved list at my library, so be interesting to see what i think of that!

also finished the city we became, which was very much a fun time. it manages to do horror and humour and social commentary and like, comic book hero all equally well without sacrificing the value of any of those pieces individually. even when i wasn't necessarily vibing with it, i could appreciate what it was doing. also as someone who doesn't know new york very well i found it mostly accessible, but that's with years of unintended cultural osmosis so idk. don't currently have book two but it's definitely on my tbr!

have pushed on a bit with mortal coil but idk, either i'm getting burnout on these or it's the culmination of the plot points i don't like (caylan, fletcher, the looming stuff with the teenagers), or even that this one isn't read by rupert degas for some reason. think i'll take a break and come back to them either in print or at some other time.

this morning i also started maurice by e.m. forster, so i'm maybe 20 minutes in? it's a queer classic written in 1913-14 about two separate relationships in the titular maurice's life (one unhappy as a young adult and one more relaxed as an adult). interesting enough so far, with some very well written lines and laying down of ideas for later. some period-typical racism but so far no more egregious than i was expecting. the guy reading it pronounces his name like 'morris' which caught me off guard but i'm getting used to it now.

feel weird counting it (since i skipped the inter-chapter sections) but i did technically read two-thirds or so of volume two of my brother's husband (i finally have the rest!) but i don't think i can spare the time to really come back to it until i've finished ace attorney investigations 2 (which will be soon, i swear). it's still excellent btw, thoroughly recommend.

　息子をお姑さんと義弟さんが預かってくれた。息子と一緒に彼らを待っている間が、貴重な時間に思えた。

　本当に優しい友人を大事にしようと思った。

So @impish-ivy asked me to look at the English and Japanese versions of Solomon's and Nightbringer's conversation in 10-A, and there are two things in particular that I'd like to highlight a little (if you want to compare the two versions yourself, I've included the Japanese version, my translation of it and the English version of their entire conversation below the cut)

The first one is about this:

The Japanese version actually more closely translates to "The one who reduced me to what I am now is you" (aka the title). It's a small difference, but it adds a lot more malice to Solomon's words + it also slightly reframes that agreement of theirs that Solomon was talking about to imo

I still wish NB would focus more on its namesake so we could figure out what the relationship between Sol and NB is and what exactly happened between them but oh well.. We still have 6 lessons to go for this season, so maybe we'll get lucky and they at least drop a few hints for us

Anyway as for the second one:

"If you had chosen this, it would have been easy". The "this" is what I want to focus on real quick

Given that right before their conversation, Solomon was asked to choose between demons and angels (tho he ultimalety ended up chosing humanity), so it would make sense to assume that that's what Nightbringer is referring to. But since the meaning of "this" was never specified, it could also mean that the actual purpose of the test might have been to see if Solomon would be willing to abandon humanity instead

Considering that Solomon has now repeadetely asked MC to side with humanity, and how there's also been some emphasize on how demons and angels do not see humans as equals, it's definitely possible, at least

ボロミアの献身にフィンドゥイラスの面影を見出すデネソール

…ボロミアにとってそこにあるのは親子の愛ではなく夫婦の愛(の模倣)。妻のかわりとして愛されるということは「父親」からの愛を失っていくということ

それを知らないファラミアは「父親」からの愛を得るためにボロミアと同じ行為をしようとする→それがファラミアの望む結果をもたらさないことを知っているボロミアは拒否する(しかしうまく説明ができない)

苦悩するボロミアに寄り添おうとするファラミア→でも、ここで弟の献身を受け取ったら自分も父と同じ轍を踏むのではないか、自分が「兄弟」の愛を逸脱してそれ以上を求め始めたらファラミアは父親のみならず兄からの愛も失ってしまうとボロミアは恐怖する

「弟」への接し方がわからなくなったボロミアはフィンドゥイラスのかわりとしての己の本分を果たそうとする　そこでファラミアはボロミアの苦悩に気付き、誰かのかわりではなくボロミアのままでいてほしいと告げる

really got back into manga this week so that's most of what's here!

finished maurice and yeah i don't think this was for me. the ending sort of redeemed it a bit (the conversation with clive at least) but i struggled to get into maurice as a character which really hampered my enjoyment of it. ah well.

in a complete change of tone i'm about a third of the way through ninefox gambit by yoon ha lee, a political military sci-fi about a disgraced captain enlisting the help of a former commander who went mad, going to deal with a key space station which has been taken over by 'heretics'. i'm really enjoying it so far, the characters and world are interesting and i'm looking forward to seeing how it all turns out! it's light on the explanation and heavy on the jargon which can occasionally cause problems but i'm happy to learn as i go so it's fine by me!

for manga, i read all four volumes of my husband's brother (otouto no otto) which was fantastic. vol 1 was a reread and the rest were new to me. i binged it over three days and got a little emotional at the end cos i wasn't ready to say goodbye to the characters. it has its issues but if you're looking for a fundamentally wholesome slice of life story featuring well-written children, great art, and that features queer themes, this is the series for you. content warnings for homophobia, grief and death in general, plus mentions of divorce and unhappy marriage.

i also finally got around to reading the mushishi bonus story (日蝕む翳, the shadow that devours the sun), which i thoroughly enjoyed. it features messy sibling relationships and eclipses (both lunar and solar), what's not to love? there doesn't seem to be an official english translation anywhere i could find but if you can get your hands on it and you're familiar with the rest of the series i'd very much recommend it.

my loan for orlando by virginia woolf came in from the library but i've not started it yet. we'll see how that goes!

The Estonian literary mythology describes the following pantheon: The supreme god, the god of all living things, is Taara (variations of the name include Tooru, Tharapita and Tarapitha), also known as Uku or Jumal, is a prominent god in Estonian mythology, with a strong resemblance to the Finnish Ukko and the Germanic Thor. He is celebrated in sacred oak forests around Tartu. The god of thunder is Uku. Uku's daughters are Linda and Jutta, the queen of the birds. Uku has two sons: Kõu (Thunder) and Pikker (Lightning). Pikker possesses a powerful musical instrument, which makes demons tremble and flee. He has a naughty daughter, Ilmatütar (Weather Maiden).

Estonian legends about giants (Kalevipoeg, Suur Tõll, Leiger) may be a reflection of Germanic (especially Scandinavian) influences. Giants themselves in some stories stood as protectors against such Germanic influences, such as invasion. There are numerous legends interpreting various natural objects and features as traces of Kalevipoeg's deeds. The giant has merged with Christian Devil, giving birth to a new character – Vanapagan (a cunning demon living on his farm or manor) and his farm hand Kaval-Ants ("Crafty Hans").

ちょっと違うが、"将来に対する希望"と、"睡眠中の幻���体験"を日本語でも英語でも「夢　dream」という一語で表現するのは全くもってピンと来ない。

麦は日本語でも大麦・小麦・ライ麦・エン麦は区別はしてるけど、英語ではbarley wheat rye oatで「麦」に対応する単語がないのよね

アプリ開発で Apple の審査担当とやり取りする際「修正」の言い方が複数あって fix, correct, modify, revise, alter などを使い分けてくるので毎回意図を汲みとれてるか不安になる。（まあ日本語にも修正の類語いっぱいあるけど）

romanceとnovel。romanceは通常騎士道物語など物語と訳されるのだけど、小説と訳されているときもある。

CollegeとUniversity

試験： 学力・知識を問う→examination,quiz,test　評価や実験→experiment　試みる→trial▼ただ「試験」で纏められるだけで日本語でも「考査」「実験」「試行」と分けて書くこともできるが。

自由(Liberty,Freedom)。契約などの法律上のやり取りが単語を増やした気もする。

この手の単語なら調理法が多い。アメリカは焼く文化だ。肉、パン、物で違う（Grill、Bread、Burn、BBQなんてのも）一方で日本は煮る文化だ。煮る、茹でる、炊く、煮込む。英語はBoil、あるいは残り全てはCookだ。

おじさんとおばさん、日本語でもこだわりがある場合には年上か年下で漢字が違うらしい。中国語では母方と父方で別の名前になる。

知里真志保によれば、大和民族が川の始まりと考える「みなもと（源）」をアイヌ語では「川の終り」と言うのだという。つまりアイヌは川を海の方から見ているのだと。

コメントで日本語は部位に依らず「髭」だけってあるけど、いちおう漢字だと「髭（くちひげ）」と「鬚（あごひげ）」と「髯（ほおひげ）」で使い分けられる。発音はぜんぶ「ヒゲ」だけど……
