Pakku: Wow. You sure have a lot of books on being a lesbian. Hama: Ya, well, you have to take a course. Otherwise they don’t let you do it.

Someone was being homophobic about Kanna x Hama??? Who do I have to fight 😡😡😡
Yes unfortunately, but the whole thing was actually pretty comical.
It was this girl who was always funny to watch because she was so obviously one of these right wing trad types, but pretended to be liberal to be socially acceptable with her fandom friends. I didn’t buy it at all because whenever me or another sapphic woman mentioned literally anything about relationships/crushes/etc. with women she’d insert herself into the conversation and act all weird. She’d also joke about m/m ships like they were her naughty secret or something lmao. The act was painfully obvious to me; you could smell the repression a mile away.
But yes, the attitude definitely extended to f/f ships too. Once we were talking about Kanna/Hama and she jumped in to preach about how “romantic” it was for Pakku to track down Kanna after meeting Katara and got all defensive when someone else said they found that arc a little creepy and preferred Kanna/Hama as their “old flames reconnecting late in life” ship.
It was funny because I could almost picture the veins popping out on her forehead as she struggled to explain why she hated that idea so much without outing herself as a homophobic conservative to her besties lmao, but I definitely knew 😂

Kanna/Hama by themselves <3
[ID: In the drawing, Hama and Kanna stood together up, shown from their heads to busts. Both beamed innocently and their eyes closed, seemingly in glee and were laughing at someone. Hama was holding up her right middle finger, in which she also made an icy claw to emphasize her fuckery. On her left, Kanna was covering her mouth, attempting to hide her laughter. Both were wearing parkas that were inspired by the amauti. Behind them were the colors of the lesbian pride flag. End of id.]

Day 1- Regret
Hama x Kanna
You can also read it here on archive of our own
A/N: Starting off strong with some old woman yuri
If you asked Kanna if she was content with her life she would tell you that she was. She had escaped the misogynistic construct of the North Pole, traveled across the world, and lived to tell the tale. She had a son who was Head Chieftain of the now flourishing South Pole. Her grandchildren had found the long-lost Avatar and ended the 100-Year-War. She couldn’t be prouder.
Yet, there was a memory that wouldn’t leave. A memory of a girl with a whale tooth comb. Her only regret.
She had met Hama the day she reached the South Pole. She had gotten lost, and was sure she was going to die, her destination just brushing her fingertips. Then the snow separated and Kanna was sure that she was actually dead, that this was the spirits coming to collect her soul.
But instead of a spirit, there was a girl, parting the snow around her as easy as if she was parting the curtains.
“Hello there stranger! Identify yourself.” she called cheerily, ignoring Kanna’s clear distress.
“K-Kanna from the Northern Water Tribe.” she stuttered, the cold stealing her voice.
“The Northern Water Tribe? Are you a waterbender?” she asked, and Kanna shook her head.
“No matter, the Southern Water Tribe will always help someone from our sister tribe.” she said, while offering her hand. “I’ll help you back to the village! My mother can fix you a hot meal, and we’ll figure out what to do from there alright.”
Kanna was too weak to do anything more than take the stranger’s hand. It was blessedly warm.
“My name’s Hama by the way.” Hama said, wrapping her arm around Kanna’s shoulders. She nodded once before slipping out of consciousness.
~
“Wake up Kanna, it’s morning.” a voice was calling her from her sleep, she opened her eyes, heart racing, had she summoned her? Could it be-
It was Pakku. He was stirring a pot that most likely held breakfast. No matter how many years passed, the hope that one day she would wake up with Hama by her side never seemed to pass.
“I heard they found another waterbender in the Fire Nation.” Pakku said, continuing to stir the pot. “I heard she’s from the Southern Water Tribe.” Kanna stilled,
“Where is she?” she asked,
“She’s coming back today.” Kanna tries not to get her hopes high, but she can’t stop her heart from beating faster,
“As one of the elders of the tribe, it will be your job to greet them.” Pakku kept stirring the pot of who knows what. Kanna can’t find it in her to care. She knows Hama better than anyone, if anyone were to survive those inhumane prison conditions, it would be her.
~
The wind had picked up, and Kanna wrapped her coat tighter around herself. She had been waiting at the dock for the past thirty minutes.
Finally a looming metal ship came into view. It lazily cut through the water as it meandered around the stray pieces of ice, and towards land.
The ship came to a rather graceful halt for such a hulking ship. The plank lowered with a loud thud. Kanna held her breath, as a woman started to walk down the plank.
A woman with a whale tooth comb.
Kanna was running before she could think. Hama barely had a second to respond before she was engulfed in a hug.
“Hello there stranger.” Hama greets her, her voice slightly rough.
“It’s really you, you’re actually here.” Kanna whispers, and Hama tightens her arms around her. They stayed that way for a long, long time
A/N: this took a while to write for no reason, but it turned out half decent, so there’s that

Pakku, seeing Katara’s necklace: I gave your grandmother that necklace. I guess I’ll teach you waterbending.
Katara: You should be teaching me because I almost beat your ass, but I’m not going to look a gift ostrich horse in the mouth.
Hama, seeing Katara’s necklace: I was in love with the woman who wore that necklace. I guess I’ll teach you bloodbending.
Katara: Wait, you were also in love with Gran Gra- blood what?

I saw some Kanna x Hama art on deviant arc (by Leyalluna Yoo)
https://www.artstation.com/artwork/oODVK4
You can't tell me they aren't a bit fruity.
A cute headcanon (that could be canon as well tbh):
Kanna was scared and cold when she first arrived in the Southern Water Tribe. She was a member of one of the richest family and sold her expensive to be able to buy transportation to her sister tribe.
When she first arrived there, everybody was suspicious of her and knew that if she them the truth, they would send her back, and she didn't traval across the entire world so they would turn her down.
No. She couldn't go home, even the thought of her mother and father's cries made her regret her decision, but she just couldn't go back. Kanna decided to take her destiny in her own hands.
—What are you doing here?! Are you a spy?
A tall man said suspiciously, holding a sharp boomerang in his hand.
—No, I'm not! I'm from the Northern Tribe!
Her heart was pounding out her chest, fingers freezing touching her brown arm.
—How can we trust you?!
The man put his boomerang close to her throat, Kanna starting to breath heavily, her head feeling like spinning around as she started sobbing.
—Stop it, Sernin!
A clear and deep voice made the short water tribe girl stop breathing for a second. A slightly taller girl put her hand on the man's arm, trying to push his weapon down.
—Does she look like an enemy to you? Look how scared and cold she looks.
Hama took her coat off and gave it to Kanna that was watching her in awe, feeling her heartbeat race.
—Put it on.
The pale girl encouraged her with a small smile. Kanna nodded and did what she told her, sighing relieved feeling the already warm coat on her.
—But Hama!
—I don't care.
And like that, a long life friendship (or at least that's what they both thought) was formed. Hama never asked her once why she left her own tribe and argued with everybody that did so.
Two years since her arrival, as much as Kanna tried to stop herself, she fell in love with her friend. Kanna left her house and now she wasn't regretting it anymore, she knew that there was no possibility that Hama would like her, as she was teasing her any time she even looked at their best friend, Sernin, which, she couldn't say she hated, she had no hard feelings towards knowing that he was just trying to protect their tribe. He was a funny and attractive guy, but just not her.

So I wrote something...first chapter out June 6th
Refrains and Lonely Reveries
Katara/Zuko, Bato/Hakoda, Kanna/Hama. T rated, 20k, 6 chapters. Third person limited present tense, Zuko POV. Drama, angst, and pining.
Two years since the war. Two months since a massive earthquake ravaged the Southern Water Tribe. Far longer since Kya was brutally killed at the hands of the Fire Nation. Enter Zuko, stuck in the frigid south for a difficult few days after his boat breaks down, stuck in a daydream as this latest unfortunate occurrence brings him closer and closer to Katara. Enter Hama, recently returned home and much preferring they stay far, far apart.
Guilt tears through Zuko's body, and he considers leaving the old women to their privacy. Eavesdropping is below him these days. Then he hears his name.
“I don’t like how close your granddaughter has gotten to that Firebender…” Hama is saying, pulling a thick shawl close around her body.
“He’s an honorable man,” her girlfriend replies, “Believe me when I say it. If it weren’t for him we might not have won the war…”
Hama pouts. “I still don’t trust him with her.”
Kanna brings her teacup to her lips with a stifled yawn. “They trust each other. Isn’t that what matters? Even more, they owe each other their lives.”
“I don’t like it,” Hama repeats.
Confidence waning, Zuko slinks away.

Hello waterfire!
I don’t know if your accepting writing prompts or anything like that (if not, just consider it a fun thought experiment), but on the chance you are. Here is an Azutara one based on the quote below.
“You know, flitining was a lot less destructive back in my day”- this can either be said by Iroh, Kanna, or any other elder charachters in regards to Azula and Katara fighting/flirting all the time.
Thanks for the ask!
I absolutely can do this! Sorry for the wait by the way.
Kanna never thought she’d come to the Fire Nation, not even in her wildest imagination. Well…that was a lie. She did sometimes dream of going to the Fire Nation and finding Hama or, in the moments when she hugged Hakoda a little tighter, of being taken away because the Fire Nation decided they wanted everyone to be imprisoned.
Yet here she was. Stepping onto Fire Nation docks and knowing she had nothing to fear. She wanted to come here. She wanted to see her grandchildren in this new place and meet Fire Lord Zuko and Princess Azula. Up until this point, she’d only heard stories about them, some good and some that made her want to grab her grandchildren and never let them return to the nation. Still, she trusted Katara and Sokka. If something was wrong, they would tell her or return to the South Pole.
Sokka greeted her on the docks with Katara being noticeably absent.
“She wanted to spend time with her girlfriend.” He joked.
“Girlfriend?” She’d known for years now that Katara liked girls and guys, but her granddaughter never had an official girlfriend.
“They’re not official yet, but everyone knows it except them.”
Kanna had to laugh. She knew the feeling. She and Hama used to flirt all the time to the point that Hama’s sister screaming at them at dinner one time to please go on a date already. They did and it was amazing, but that was beside the point.
“Who is it?” Maybe it was a girl she’d met in the Earth Kingdom?
Sokka suddenly grew nervous and played with his fingers, “Sokka?” Kanna asked.
“It’s….Princess Azula.” Sokka admitted.
“Princess Azula.” Really? The girl who was known as the Avatar Slaver, the Conqueror of Ba Sing Se, the wielder the blue flame and Ozai’s prodigy daughter. That was the girl Katara liked?
“Then I’ll have to meet this Azula.”
Sokka led her up to the Fire Nation palace, where she paused for a moment to take it in, then to the garden. Compared the the size of the rest of the palace, the gardens were normal. There was a small pond in the middle with turtleducks and some space for people to run around.
Kanna’s eyes widened when she saw Azula and Katara. The two were fighting. Her first instinct was to look at Sokka. Was this not concerning? Shouldn’t he be helping his sister? Kanna would have jumped in but she had a feeling a small 70 something year old woman wasn’t going to be much against the Fire Nation princess.
Then she saw it. They weren’t fighting fighting. They were sparing and Kanna also quickly understood why Sokka thought they were girlfriends. Katara and Azula were sending water blasts and fireballs at one another but the way they did made it seem more like a dance than a battle. At the end, Katara splashed Azula with some water from the turtleduck pond making Azula laugh and rub it off her face but then put some grass on Katara’s cheek.
“You know, flirting was a lot less destructive back in my day.” Kanna commented.
That got a laugh out of Sokka which brought Katara and Azula’s attention to the two.
“Gran Gran!” Katara cried, hugging her grandmother, “You’re here.”
“I am. It’s so good to see you, Katara.”
“It’s good to see you too. I missed you.”
“And who is this?” Kanna asked, looking at Azula.
Azula bowed in a Fire Nation style, “Princess Azula, Elder Kanna. It’s an honor to have you in the Fire Nation.”
“Elder? Did you just call me old?” She bit back a laugh when she saw Azula’s eyes go small, “I’m joking, Princess Azula. It’s good to finally meet you.”
“Thank you and you don’t have to call me princess.”
“I can’t wait to show you around. The town here is amazing!” Katara told her, “But I should probably wash off first. I’ll meet you and Sokka later.”
“That sounds wonderful.” While Katara ran off, Azula stayed with them, “I hope me being here isn’t too much of a burden.”
“No. No.” Azula quickly said, “It really is great to have you here. It’s nice seeing Katara so happy.”
Sokka rolled his eyes, “Just ask her out on a date already. Everyone knows you want to! Ty Lee has spent the last month finding you a perfect first date outfit.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. Katara is a friend and nothing more…even if she does look pretty after sparing or…all the time.” When she saw Sokka’s face, she moved her face away to hide her blush, “Shut up.”
“Take it from an old woman, Azula, if you really like Katara then you’ll regret that you waited so long.” Kanna told her.
“I don’t know.”
“Trust me.” She told the young girl, “I know better than most.” She whispered.
“Maybe. I…maybe.”
“Think about it.” Kanna said, “But I must say that if you break my granddaughter’s heart, the Fire Nation will be looking for a new princess.”
Sokka and Azula froze but Kanna kept walking down. Sokka had a smile on his face and was laughing a little while Azula had a look of concern.
“Is she serious?” Azula asked.
“She did once throw a Fire Nation soldier into shark invested waters after he threatened to set my dad’s crib on fire. She also once knocked out a soldier and apparently he told people he fell on the ice because that was a better story than getting punched by a non bender from the South Pole.”
“I’m actually both impressed and scared.”
“Good.” Kanna called over her shoulder.

AU in which what would happen if Pakku ran alongside with Kanna? And what if instead of Hama getting taken, it would be Pakku as his own sacrifice?
Can y’all imagine how much that would change canon? Can you imagine the utter torture I can put Pakku through?
