I got a Pixel 8. I was going to get an 8a but I found a good eBay deal on the 8. I'm fiddling with the bespoke Google stuff they have. Fascinated to discover that the on device audio captioning system is totally allowed to caption swears! They don't even give you the option to turn off the censoring on YouTube. You can tell this one to censor itself but I'm not sure why you would. It's extremely handy to be able to caption any arbitrary video or podcast reasonably well. Reassuring that running the captioner causes noticeable performance drops.

It's a pretty nice phone. I wish that they still made good phones with capacitive fingerprint scanners but at least this scanner seems okay. It would be so easy to do this the good way! You don't have to develop all these clever guidance features to help people learn where to put their fingerprint if you just put it in the button!

This is my first near-flagship phone I've had at release, which is probably going to matter more in two years than it does now. Interested to see what their image processing stuff looks like, I find a lot of that bizarre because I'm expecting the appearance of a little phone sensor image and then they throw a bunch of processing and simulated optics at it and it looks weird.

The bubbly UI is weird but fine. Very low density at times. I haven't used a stock launcher in ages.

Pushing the boundaries of traditional ceramic techniques by merging art and science

Art and science are sometimes poles apart, but that isn't the case in a research project described in ACS Omega. For this work, an interdisciplinary team merged scientific research, technological advancements and artistic exploration to experiment with the production, properties and application of a new kind of ceramic. In recent years, scientists have been adding graphene oxide (GO) to ceramic slurries—consisting of particles of kaolin clay or other materials dispersed in water—to make fired ceramics more durable and resistant to thermal shock. Materials scientist Daria Andreeva and colleagues adapted this technique by using ultrasound to better mix the GO into kaolin slurries. They adjusted GO concentration and ultrasound exposure time to find the conditions that most enhanced the resulting ceramics' strength and heat resistance.

it's been ages since i've drawn because i intimidate myself out of every for-fun project by feeling like my skills aren't there yet and i've been trying to find something that makes me want to again, eventually coming to a thought along the lines of "i can't just draw daphne looking left again" and

man, why not! my art is for me! if that's what it takes, why should i not do what i want to? other people do it all the time! if i keep not drawing i'll never improve and continuing to draw/paint is like. the #1 way to Get Better At The Damn Thing. the problem is i'm a coward who can't just let something be ""bad"" but keep going anyway and i'm tired of that
