It stars Marlon Brando and features Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, Rod Steiger, Pat Henning, and Eva Marie Saint in her film debut. The soundtrack score was composed by Leonard Bernstein. The film was suggested by "Crime on the Waterfront" by Malcolm Johnson, a series of articles published in November–December 1948 in the New York Sun which won the 1949 Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting, but the screenplay by Budd Schulberg is directly based on his own original story. The film focuses on union violence and corruption amongst longshoremen, while detailing widespread corruption, extortion, and racketeering on the waterfronts of Hoboken, New Jersey.   On the Waterfront was a critical and commercial success. It received twelve Academy Award nominations and won eight, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Brando, Best Supporting Actress for Saint, and Best Director for Kazan. In 1997, it was ranked by the American Film Institute as the eighth-greatest American movie of all time; in AFI's 2007 list, it was ranked 19th. #Repost @vintagemoviepostercollector (@get_repost) ・・・ On The Waterfront 1954. As part of his contract, Marlon Brando only worked till 4 every day and then he would leave to go see his analyst. Brando's mother had recently died and the conflicted young actor was in therapy to resolve his issues with his parents. Interestingly, for the film's classic scene between Rod Steiger and Brando in the back of the cab, all of Steiger's close-ups were filmed after Brando had left for the day, so his lines were read by one of the crew members. Fr. Barry's "Boys - This is my church!" speech is the highlight of 'On the Waterfont' for me. Of course the whole film is great and Brando gives an amazing performance, but it's this scene's poweful monologue by Karl Malden that always affects me most. It's a great piece of cinema: dramatic and emotional, well shot and well acted, a pivotal moment in the film. But what lifts it to a whole other level for me is the resonance of the message within it. Christianity must not be a religion of churches and cathedrals - Christ is on the waterfront, and in the refugee camps, and in the hospitals, and indeed anywhere where people are suffering and struggling....and He cares. It's this conviction, and great films like On the Waterfront, that keep me going as a priest.
