So I Wait for You Chapter 2
written for Kataang Week 2022 hosted by @kataang-week
Day 2 Prompt: Just Friends
“Hey, Katara, why are you still asleep?” came the annoyingly perky voice of her roommate, Meng.
Katara surfaced slowly from sleep, where she'd been dreaming something warm and pleasant that dissipated so quickly it was gone by the time her eyes squinted blearily open. “Huh?” she queried, voice slumber-roughened.
Then she bolted upright. Her room was bright with morning, each corner illuminated by sunshine. A golden glow surrounded Meng's darkened silhouette and slashed bars of light across the wall behind her. What time was it? Why hadn't her alarm gone off? She patted her nightstand desperately, trying to find her phone so she could figure out how late she was.
Meng's snort of laughter stilled her hand. Katara growled, low and long, the sound rumbling in her throat and soothing her irritation. When would she learn?
After heaving a disgusted sigh, Katara asked “It's Saturday, isn't it?”
Meng's peals of laughter increased in volume. In honking chortles, Meng taunted “I can't believe you fell for it again! You are so gullible! C'mon, get up anyway. Sokka brought pastries.”
Well, that was something worth getting out of bed for, even if it was early on a Saturday. Her brother's girlfriend Suki worked in Republic City's best bakery, Akiko's Kitchen. The couple who owned the shop were of mixed nationality, Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom, and their offerings combined the best of both cuisines. Whenever Sokka drove Suki into work he came home with a delicious selection of treats for his housemates. It made rooming with her brother almost bearable.
Katara couldn't wait to see what he'd brought home today. She flung her covers aside and hopped out of bed. Meng backed into the hallway when Katara leaped up, which was a good thing because her room wasn't really big enough for two people to stand in it. On her way out of the room, Katara snatched her robe off its hook. Yawning as she wrapped the robe around her short nightgown, she trailed after Meng.
They followed the delicious smells of yeast and butter and sugar into the surprisingly updated and airy kitchen of their small rental house. The large window over the sink was open and allowed a fresh morning breeze to waft through the room.
As ever, feeling the breeze on her face made her think of Aang. She rubbed her breastbone, where the ache of missing him centered. Since he's brought up their first meeting while chatting last week, the ache of missing him had intensified. She hated being away from her best friend for so long. This was their longest separation.
Texting back and forth and chatting on Discord didn't quite fill the void she'd lived with for over a year now. Text on a screen could never be as wonderful as seeing his face and feeling the pure comfort of his hand in hers. She closed her eyes and pictured his bright smile in response their homey kitchen. He'd love the steamed red bean buns and the fruit pies, too, even if the latter paled in comparison to Gyatso's. Aang's guardian made fruit pies that transcended the form, the apotheosis of fruit pies. Oooh, maybe she could give Gyatso a call later and ask him to ship her some!
Rather than continue to wallow in her sorrows, Katara did what she thought Aang would want. She redirected her mind from the thoughts causing her distress and focused on the food, on Sokka, and on Meng.
“Hey Sokka” she greeted her brother, who was stuffing his face while scribbling formulas onto a napkin. “What are you writing and do you want some real paper?”
Sokka shrugged. “Nah, this is fine. I just figured out the solution to a problem we had in the lab yesterday and I need to write it down before it slips away.” He stood, tucking the encoded napkin into his back pocket. “In fact, I'm about to meet Teo and Jin to finish up. You're welcome for the food.”
Rolling her eyes, Katara muttered “Give a girl a chance. I only rolled out of bed two minutes ago.” The thanks she offered started out grudging, but settled into true gratitude when Sokka smiled and ruffled her hair. Sure, he could be extraordinarily annoying, but she loved him anyway. Even though Suki was probably the person who really deserved their thanks.
She looked a question to Meng, who promptly defended herself. “Don't look at me like that! I thanked him before I went in to wake you up.”
Niceties observed, both girls turned their attention to the basket of food. Meng's hand hovered briefly over the mooncakes before diving in and selecting a cream bun. Katara grabbed one of the neglected mooncakes for herself, and thanked the spirits that Akiko and Chen had decided to offer the rich treats year round when they proved so popular during the moon festival.
She closed her eyes and hummed in happiness as she bit into the cake. The slight sweetness of lotus seed paste was quickly overwhelmed by the salty, savory flavor of the egg yolk in the center. Absolutely delicious.
Across the table from her, Meng shoved half of her pastry into her mouth and made obscene noises as she chewed it. An odd look came into her eyes, a gleam of remembered mischief, and she sat straighter and waved for Katara's attention.
Covering her mouth, Meng mumbled around a mouthful of bread “Oooh, oooh, I just remembered something I wanted to show you!” Swallowing audibly, she added “You still like guys, right? Your awful ex didn't make you swear them off forever?”
Katara thought briefly of Jet, the awful ex in question. She shuddered, delicately and briefly, then nodded firmly. “Still into male-type-people,” she clarified, “simply choosing to admire from afar for now.”
Meng grinned brightly “Well, that's for the best because this one is so out of reach. In Ba Sing Se or something. Here, let me bring up the video and we can admire from afar together.” Fiddling with her phone Meng explained further, “A friend sent me this Tik Tok and this guy is literally the hottest man on the planet. Maybe on any planet. Spirits, you have to see him.”
Katara nibbled on more of her breakfast while Meng continued to tap at her phone. Finally the other girl stood and motioned Katara to her side. She held the phone so they could both see it.
Tik Tok was open and displayed the results of Meng's search for “handstand challenge.” The top result on the left caught her eye. In it, a young man appeared in profile, balanced easily on his hands, toes pointed nonchalantly skyward. He wore baggy sweatpants and nothing else and he was utterly beautiful, with sleek, clearly defined muscles and long, long legs. Everything she could see of him was delicious.
So it was no surprise when Meng selected that video and let it play. On her phone, the man lifted a hand from the ground, touching it to one knee as he bent it and brought his pointed toes together. Her vision swam as he deftly spun on his remaining hand, swinging his legs into a near split as he did. Ooh, bendy.
“I don't know how he does it,” Meng murmured wonderingly.
Katara stared in awe, but then squinted and leaned closer to the screen as she caught a flash of blue. He had come to rest in a one-armed handstand, his other arm extended gracefully to the side, legs maintaining their near-split. He had sky blue tattoos marking the chi path along his arm. Instantly she knew the extent and pattern of the inked design. And she knew, too, what the pale blue lines meant.
She whispered “He's airbending. His tattoos are the mark of a master airbender.” She remembered Aang's joy and pride when he'd received his. It broke her heart that airbenders were now so rare people didn't even recognize the marks of his mastery.
Katara continued to stare, unblinking, while he held the pose for a small eternity. As she admired his gratuitous physical beauty she fell headlong into the most impetuous crush she'd ever experienced. The physical signs were unmistakable—her hitching inhale and convulsive gulp against a suddenly dry mouth. Her heart sped fast as the wings of a hummingmoth. Something about the lithe lines of his body woke up every cell in hers. Forget the dry mouth; any moment she thought she might begin to drool.
On screen, the man effortlessly pushed off the ground and landed on one foot. He moved almost too quickly for her to follow as he lay back from that position into a pose that she thought might be impossible without the airbending. Regardless of what bending he used to help out, what his body could do was astounding. The he eased upward briefly before sliding into a deep showy bow, turning slightly toward the camera.
When he straightened from his bow and aimed a devastating grin at the camera Katara sat down hard.
Katara could do nothing but stare at the final frame as the shape of the world trembled and reformed. This alluring vision? The most beautiful man she'd ever seen in her entire life? The guy who she found more viscerally appealing than any other person she'd ever seen? The person who'd just completely rewritten the rules of attraction for her, was Aang, her oldest friend. Her mind struggled to contain this duality. Her best friend. The boy who went penguin sledding with her, who held her tight and cried with her when mom got sick, who knew all her petty thoughts and worst instincts and loved her for them rather than in spite of them, was somehow also this gorgeous creature who encompassed everything she found most attractive in a man. When had that happened? Had he been so beautiful all along? How had she failed to notice? And, most importantly, how could she go back to not noticing?
She surfaced from her shocked silence to find Meng finishing a question whose beginning she'd missed.
“Don't you agree?” Meng asked.
“Umm. What?” Katara asked, haze slowly lifting from her thoughts.
Meng huffed slightly, then repeated herself. “I said, well, of course it's bending, and he can bend me any time! He the absolute hottest, don't you agree?”
Katara quickly shook her head. “No! No, we're just friends.”
Her roommate's brow crinkled in confusion, which she gave voice in a squawked “What? What do you mean? You know him? What's his real name? Is he seeing anyone?” Sudden accusation narrowed her eyes “A friend, huh? Why are you blushing bright red?”
Katara swallowed convulsively. “It's hot in here, isn't it? Let's open the window.” Then she remembered that the window was already open and felt her cheeks heat til she worried they might burst into flame. She also realized that she was still staring at the final frame of the video on Meng's phone, Aang frozen with that sexy smirk. How in La's left gill did Aang have a sexy smirk?
Sexy? They were just friends. She shouldn't be thinking of him as sexy, right? But, objectively, he really was. She had lots of friends who she supposed might be considered sexy. Yue and Haru and Ty Lee were all gorgeous. And yet none of them made her pulse race and her skin heat. But this grown-up Aang definitely did. What did that mean?
She thought about how she and Aang were together. They had shared all their secrets, and he knew her better than anyone, even her family. When they were in the same place, they sat as close together as they could manage. They held hands as often as not. And she had no idea how many times she'd kissed his cheek, but she could almost feel the smooth warmth of his skin against her lips when she thought of him. Those were friendly things, right? Sitting near each other and holding hands and cheek kisses? Those could be things people who were just friends did. Right?
Mind distracted by kisses, she wondered how his lips would feel. If she leaned in to kiss his mouth, would he meet her? Did he find her as appealing as she found him? Would he pull her close and hold her tight?
Katara planted her elbows on the table and dropped her forehead into her hands. “Oh no, oh no, oh no. I can't want him! This is going to change everything.”
Meng cackled and turned her phone off. “Okay, Miss I've-sworn-off-men except for the most beautiful man in five nations, you're going to talk, and you're going to talk now, you floozy.”
With every ounce of feeling she had, Katara groaned “Monkeyfeathers.”
~o~o~o~
Aang stared at his text message screen, debating. After many moments of hesitation, he decided this conversation needed a more personal touch. He wiped the sweat from his palms and tapped in one of the numbers he knew by heart.
“Hey, Aang. What do you need?” Sokka's voice communicated intense curiosity.
Aang rubbed the back of his neck, glad his friend couldn't see the obvious tell for Aang's nervous state. “Why do you think I need something? I didn't say I need anything.”
“Dude. You know I don't talk on the phone. You'd text anything that wasn't urgent or sensitive. So. Tell me what you need.” Aang could almost hear Sokka rolling his eyes.
“Okay, you're right. I need a place to stay in Republic City for a few nights.” Aang spoke quickly, before he could lose his resolve.
Rather than respond flippantly or dig for further information, Sokka's voice went completely earnest. “You always have a place wherever I am, Aang. I will never forget how you and Gyatso were there for Katara, for our whole family, when we lost mom. Anything you need, you got it.”
Aang's eyes burned and he blinked rapidly. With a quick sniff and clearing of his throat, he explained the need. “I'm transferring to URC next semester and there are some things I have to do in person. I'll be there in two weeks.”
Sokka actually squealed, his unusual gravity a thing of the past. “That is amazing! What did Katara say? I can't believe she didn't tell me! She must be so happy! Is that why she's been weirder than usual the past few days? But, no, she-”
Aang, tired of waiting for a pause, broke in. “She doesn't know! Please, don't tell her.”
There was a long silence during which Aang could almost hear Sokka shaking his head in confusion. An indrawn breath, then nothing. Sokka waited. Aang waited.
Then he caved. “I thought I might surprise her. You know, just show up and tell her in person? So I can get one of her famous Katara hugs? Is that a bad idea? Won't she be happy to see me?” Aang's resolve faltered a bit.
Sokka chuckled. “Idiot,” he said fondly, “she'll be ecstatic. Hey, if you're getting in Friday night, you should come to the swim team end-of-season party! I'll send you directions and you can surprise her there. Maybe a party would help with her pissy mood, too.”

Hiii!!! I’ve been binging through your blog for the past few weeks and I noticed how you talk about how Kataang(Katara x Aang) is portrayed in the show. Honestly yeah, I will admit I didn’t like it at first but now I just don’t really care for it. But I’d be interested hearing an in-depth opinion on the ship(unless you already did and I just never noticed or forgot 😭).
Another question, do you think you’re going to read the comics that came out the series? If you’re asking my opinion I’d say they’re a uuuh 7-8 out of 10 IG?
I do have thoughts on Kataang which I haven't shared yet. Part of me thinks I should wait to answer your ask until I've finished the series; it's obvious to me that these two are being set up to be the big finale couple, which means if I talk about them now I'm probably missing the pieces I need to have a full, well-rounded opinion. But you know what? I feel like talking about them now. So here goes.
Short answer: It peeves me that Aang comes from a culture that seemingly doesn't even have parents, yet he still manages to date his mother.
Long answer: they're both way too young. I'm a huge fan of letting the kids be kids for as long as possible. Especially with these kids, who have been prevented from being kids by the war. As Katara points out in the opening scene of the very first episode, she's been the mother since her own died (or at least she feels like she has had to be the mother). Call me crazy, but I'd rather Katara spend a few years after the war doing dumb childish stuff to recapture that lost childhood than jump straight into a relationship. Isn't the safety and space to do dumb childish stuff one of the things those who are trying to end the war are fighting for? Shouldn't she get to enjoy that? And Aang is just way too young no matter what way you look at it. He's 12 right? I think that would make him a grade 6 student. Back in my day (yells at cloud) Grade 6 students collected yugioh cards and feuded over who had the snazzier lunch box. I could picture a 12 year old having a crush on a slightly older girl that goes to the same school, but it would be short lived and unactionable. I guess Katara would be around 14? So, a grade 8 student. A grade 8 girl would not date a grade 6 boy. It would just never happen.
They've both got bigger fish to fry. Aang is the last Air Nomad AND the current Avatar. When he fully takes on both of those positions, what time will he have for a girlfriend? Katara is the only Southern Waterbender. Whether or not she wants the responsibility, it will be her duty to single-handedly reconstruct a huge portion of her nation's culture from the ground up once she returns south. Does she have the time to ping pong around the globe mothering her boyfriend as he rides giant animals or does Avatar stuff? Say she wants to: what will her family and the rest of her tribe think of the only person who can access such a huge part of their culture riding off into the sunset?
Their current relationship dynamic is still too mother/son. This is more obvious in season 1 than in season 2 (maybe that's growth?) but you can't depict a male/female pair as pieta and then expect me to ship. I think this could change somewhat, but I've already been disappointed in that. I thought that once Katara had mastered waterbending and therefore felt she had something other than mothering to contribute to the group, she would back off with the mothering. And she did, a little, but not enough for my tastes. Maybe as Aang fully steps into the Avatar role and the last Air Nomad role (sidenote: no idea what the latter would look like) he'll move on to a more equal relationship with Katara.
I think Katara is meant for better things than rebirthing a nation. Bending seems to be at least somewhat genetic. So if Aang wants Airbending in any form to survive after his death, he's going to need a billion kids. While I could definitely see Katara wanting children, I don't see her as the barefoot pregnant type.
I'm not convinced that Aang has a clear picture of Katara. She has flaws, which is good! Does Aang see them?
I get the feeling that, while they are helping each others' skills grow as they travel the globe, they are also preventing each others' personalities from growing. As long as Aang is around, Katara has someone to mother. As long as Katara is around, Aang has someone who prevents him from feeling the full weight of his responsibilities. Again, this is worse in season 1, but how often did Katara deny that Aang was to blame for something that was at least somewhat his fault? Aang will never become a fully rounded person until he can look at his flaws and mistakes dead on and say "my bad" without a Katara in the background going "no you're perfect!" Katara deserves to find out what kind of person she is outside of a nurturing role. Quick thought experiment: what if you pair Katara with someone who needs no nurturing, or better yet, nurtures her? And what if you pair Aang with someone as bluntly truthful as Toph? Katara and Aang might find both of those situations uncomfortable at first, but I think it would contribute to their growth.
Aang having a crush on an oblivious Katara would be a great single season arc. I think it would fit both of their characters well, and I think Aang growing past latching on to the first person he saw after the iceberg would be a good way to show that he's rooting himself in his time-displaced present, and fully committing to ending the war. And don't get me wrong, I love Aang and Katara both as a fighting team and as friends.
These kids are all fighting a war, and all kids. I don't mind the supporting characters having romances, because it's not like Sokka or Suki can end the war, no matter how hard they try/might want to. But I'm a big believer in doing one thing at a time, and I think if you're the only person in the whole world who can end a war, then ending the war should take precedence over dating. I'm aware that that's an unrealistic expectation and out of step with the show's theme of balance. In the real world, birth rates skyrocket during war time because people live for the moment and grab happiness (read boinking) wherever they see it. But both these kids are pre-boinking age so I'm going to be a cranky old fart about it.
Being the wife of the Avatar is a position that will often come with being relegated to second place, especially with the amount of work that undoing a century of war will take. Although she works well in a team, Katara is a naturally dominant personality. Katara did enough of putting herself in second place before the series started. I think Katara could very easily fall into the pattern of subjugating her own needs and desires and putting her husband's first, but I don't want that to happen. And one way to prevent that from happening is to prevent her from dating the single most politically important person in the universe. (To be clear, Aang would never deliberately squish a wife like that, I just think the workload of being Avatar and last air nomad would cause that to happen)
A lot of my objections to this pairing are very adult objections. I don't know what I would have thought about this pairing when I was the age of the show's target audience. It undoubtedly would have bothered me less, although I probably would have been put off by how twee it is. As an adult, all I can see are babies playing house.
As for the comics, I hadn't made any concrete plans to read them. I don't know where I'd get access to them. I'm not sure how canonical they are. I guess I should probably decide whether or not I want to read them after I've finished the whole series. I've been told that my girl Jin appears in one of them, so I definitely have some interest. I have also had the Avatar Kyoshi novels strenuously recommended to me. But so much of Avatar's charm, to me, is in the medium. And while comics are closer to animation than books are, they're still static. Avatar does movement so well.

————–
Chapter 1
Rain pours down on Aang, covering him and the bundle in his arms in sheets of water.
The blinding wrath of the Avatar State fades from his spirit. Aang is all that’s left—Aang, the last airbender, clasping the body of the girl he loves.
Katara.
Her name is a whisper upon his lips, the syllables breaking with a grief that splits him down to his very core.
“Katara,” he sobs, aloud this time.
He bends a flame into his open palm, a flickering, fitful light in the midnight rain. Katara’s head rests in the crook of his elbow. The rest of her body lies in his lap, balled up against him.
The fingers of his other hand trace a trembling line down her temple. Dark hair plasters to her skin, covering her face like strands of seagrass. Carefully, as if brushing kelp from the cheekbones of a fragile treasure, he sweeps her hair to the side.
Katara looks like she’s only asleep. But then the raindrops that fall on her face, water streaming over her cheeks and down her chin, should awaken her.
Yet the lines of her eyelashes don’t flutter or blink open. Her eyes remain shut.

fun. x ATLA
Idk if anyone else in the fandom listens to fun., but I'm a big fan of pretty much the whole Some Nights album. I was listening to it last week (yes, even the Some Nights - Intro, which I don't vibe with) because it was speaking to me in terms of ATLA characters (certain songs reminded me of certain characters).
"But Turtle, Nate Reuss wasn't focused on ATLA when he was writing this album"
Ok, and? I'm gonna have some fun with this!
So here's each song and the character I think it fits (not all are exact fits & not every song is included, but most are)
1. Some Nights - Sokka
"This is it, boys, this is war/what are we waiting for?" feels very Sokka to me, especially since he considers himself a warrior and is the protector of Wolf Cove after Hakoda and the other men leave to fight the fire nation. Also "I still see your ghost" could reference Kya, but more likely Yue, since Sokka says that he sees Katara's face when he tries to remember his mother. The line about the martyr reminded me of Suki. Ok also the "miss my mom and dad for this" line?? Come on. Ok BUT "my heart is breaking for my sister and the con she called love/and then I look into my nephew's eyes" is just SCREAMING a Zutara or Kataang fic of some sort. Come on, right?? It's just begging to be written. Overall, this is very existential crisis-Sokka to me.
2. We Are Young - Katara
Ok so I wasn't fully sure what song to give Katara and it just didn't feel right to leave her out so I deadass just gave her this one like 5 minutes ago, but it still works. It would also be AU-based, but hear me out. I'm assuming y'all are most likely to know this song out of all of them. So Katara's at a bar after breaking up with her boyfriend (Aang) and the Gaang's all here. "My seat's been taken by some sunglasses askin' bout a scar" would be Zuko asking about the scars on Katara's hands that she couldn't fully heal after Aang's firebending accident. "But between the drinks and subtle things/the holes in my apologies/you know I'm trying hard to take it back" feels very Aang to me, especially since he's immature. Then right after, I feel like it switches to a more Zutara vibe for most of the song. Also "the moon is on my side/I have no reason to run" with Katara is such a sick combo omg.
3. Carry On - Zuko
The lyrics are very angsty. "You swore and said we are not/we are not shining stars/this I know, I never said we are" feels like a very Zuko & Iroh interaction to me. And also "though I've never been through hell like that/I've closed enough windows to know you can never look back" !!!! Like that feels very Season 3 Zuko to me. Also, no matter what, Zuko is forced to carry on, whether it's with Ozai, Azula, the Gaang... Although don't get me wrong, Zuko does take back his destiny, but I'm referring more to how he can't give up. Also Ursa tells Zuko and he later says how he struggles and fights, even though it's hard. "And we talked and talked about how our parents will die/all our neighbors and wives" Zuko is very familiar with the concept of mortality, he nearly died and he loses his mother at a young age. I'm sure he worries about when Iroh will die, as well as his friends. I feel like Zuko has a line about people leaving him, but I can't find it. Ok next point "and it's nice to know when I was left for dead/I was found and now I don't roam these streets/I am not the ghost you are to me" is very reminiscent of Zuko's relationship (or lack thereof) with Ozai. Also "may your past be the sound of your feet upon the ground" feels like a very Iroh line. Last point, "on our darkest day, when we're miles away/so we'll come and we'll find our way home" is very reminiscent of Zuko's redemption arc and how he returns home and retakes his place in the line of succession and becomes Fire Lord.
4. It Gets Better - Katara?
Honestly the "yes, I know it hurts at first/but it gets better" reminds me a lot of Katara. I also liked the line about fire in the sky and snow on the ground. Not too much else to say.
5. All Alone - Mai
I really encourage you guys to listen to this song, it was really interesting. The lyrics reminded me of Maiko, especially how Mai seems to not care about anything. The girl's voice reminded me a lot of Mai throughout the series, especially her interactions with Zuko. "I gave her to you/I don't need a toy/I thought you might appreciate it/I don't like the way it moves" reminds me of their interaction when Zuko tries to give Mai the shell on Ember Island. "How do you cry with inanimate eyes/you're never gonna smile/with the way that you're wired" also reminded me a lot of Mai's character throughout the series.
(I really like All Alright, but wasn't sure who it would fit well with)
6. One Foot - Toph
"I put one foot in front of the other" is very Toph, she is a fighter first and foremost. "I don't need a new love or a new life" also feels very her, Toph doesn't care as much about the more material things compared to the rest of the Gaang. I'm sure there's more that can be said about this connection, but I didn't really vibe with the song so much. Sorry Toph.
7. Out on the Town - Aang
Okay, Aang fans, I'm asking you to stick with me here. "Cause I know I'll never take the time/to unpack my missteps and call all of our friends" feels very much like season 3 Aang, where he doesn't face consequences for his actions and Bryke kinda places him on this pedestal of sorts. Also, this is a kataang breakup song to me. The chorus really feels like Aang to me, putting his feelings before those of other people, causing a scene, there being consequences (that he somehow gets out of, but that's not today's discussion). "But I'm waiting for the day you come back and say/'hey maybe I should change my mind'" reminds me of the first 2 times Aang kisses Katara and how he expects her to change her mind on how she feels about him. Also the repetition of "open up your heart".
Overall, I found the entire album to be very Zuko-coded.
If you read this far, I appreciate you!

Although there are a couple moments before this episode (will you go peguin sleeding with me, why are you smiling at me like that...) , The Fortuneteller is the first time we really see Aang trying to confess to Katara that he likes her. One of my favourite parts of this episode is Aang confessing and getting (not great) advice from Sokka (especially since he doesn’t know it’s Katara).
2- The Avatar State S2E1
Tumblr media
AHHH “For the people who love you” (i just love this scene) Besides Katara’s hugs and kisses on the cheek, this is the first time the confession comes from Katara. This might be more in a friendly way, but it is still such a sweet moment !!
3- The Cave of Two Lovers S2E2
Tumblr media
Katara is on a roll, two episodes in a row the confession comes from her.  “What if we kiss” isn’t necessairly a confession, but I had to include it because it’s ICONIC.
4- The Earth King S2E18
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right before they part ways Aang is so close to confessing to Katara before Sokka interrupts. Let’s not forget Katara’s reaction to Sokka interrupting 👀👀
5- The Guru S2E19
Tumblr media
“Why would I let go of Katara? I love her!” This is the first time the audience knows that Aang little crush on Katara evolved into more <3.
6- Day of Black Sun pt.1 S3E10
Tumblr media
THE scene where Aang finally confesses to Katara. Also their first real kiss.
7- Sozin’s Comet pt 4 S3E21
Tumblr media
The balcony scene. The final scene where both of them finally confess their love to each other

Late entry for @kataang-week Day 2: Injured
Rating: T
Word Count: 10.3k
Summary:
Katara reached up and took his face in her hands, felt him soften under her touch. She craned her neck up to press her lips to his cheek, right where a teardrop was rolling down. “I couldn’t let you die either,” she murmured, “not when I could do something to save you.” But Aang drew back at her words, his eyes downcast. “But if I had just been paying attention, if I had just noticed what was going on, you wouldn’t have needed to.” He raised his eyes to hers, and in them she could see the shame, the guilt, the self-blame. “If I had just been a better Avatar,” he said in an anguished whisper, “you wouldn’t have gotten hurt.” And in that moment, she didn’t see the Avatar she knew him to be. Instead, she saw a fifteen-year-old—a fifteen-year-old who shouldn’t even know he was the Avatar, a fifteen-year-old forced from an era of peace to fight in a time of war, a fifteen-year-old with shoulders too slim to bear the weight of the sky and hands too young to hold the weight of the world. - Being the Avatar is a burden as heavy as the weight of the world. But as long as Katara is alive, she swears that Aang will never have to carry it alone. Written for Kataang Week 2023 Day 2: Injured.

Sooo i was silently stalking the anti zut@ra / pr0 k@taang # and only 1.. only 1 blog pops up 🤭🤣🤣🤣🤣 in the last few days or so with a few likes and sh+t.
While our fandom keeps the entire atla universe alive with our never ending fanart, fan fics, zutara weeks/months and head canons.
Then someone said that both of them (the ‘asker’ and the ‘author’) are glad that in the atla youtube polls that their ship always wins 70/30 something to let ‘everyone’ know that majority is pro their (canon fodder) ship. Their fandom are really clueless that we hardly participate in that nonsense because we’re anti bryke 😆😆.
If they wanted to find out the real deal, their ship originally posted a youtube fanvid of the song ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ 2 years before we did and we got freaking more than a million likes than they is saying something about it.
The one I'm specifically thinking about was a while ago, and they were replying directly to me (cause, I'm not subjecting myself to that side of the fandom willingly), so we're probably not talking about the same person. I just think it's funny that the defenders of the canon ship are using fan art. It's almost like they KNOW Kataang is trash in canon.
Also, given the impossible number of voters on those polls, I think it's safe to say they're mostly bots. If you really want to get their panties bunched, talk about how many more Zutara fics there are than Kataang.

Chapter 2 of the Katara Kyoshi Warrior AU is up!!! @kataang-week
Written for prompts: injury, spirits, and wind&rain
my spirit always drifts back to you, dauntless over spun paths (ch 2)
Truly, it feels glorious to weave her hands through water 一 to feel it pulse and glow, calling to the blood in Katara’s veins; to hear the rumble of chi, almost electric, twisting through the patient’s body and yearning, begging for balance. If you learn its language, you can say anything to the human body. The village people even gave her an honorific: the Painted Lady, a traveling spirit who calls all the four nations home. Under this guise, Katara can hold a person’s lifeline and tug them to shore.
She’d felt so small, so thin, when she’d been trying to suppress her bending. Day by day, she becomes more of herself.
“Madam!” A boy calls from the ground, muddy with rain, some ten feet below. Katara levitates above him, looming on a block of ice shrouded in fog. He’s sheepish and asks, “Sorry, do you prefer Miss? There’s an emergency-”
The sky rumbles, threatening to split even further open, and the rain pounds the ground.
Katara smiles. “Either! Take me there.” She hops down, bending stairsteps made of thin slabs of ice, each bar melting and falling and freezing in time with her movements. She runs after the boy. The edges of her gown are laced with mist so no one can see her worn shoes.
The village boy pulls Katara to a burned tent on the east end of Kyoshi Island. A sky bison lows, mourning; he’d be inside if he could fit. Inside, laid across a table, a man coughs four, five times. Nearby, two more scared boys are standing.

KW 2023: Injured
Day 2 for Kataang Week 2023 hosted by @kataang-week with the prompt Injured!
Links: AO3 || FF.net
Summary: 7 days, 7 prompts, 7 snapshots of their lives, and my 7th fricking year of having done this. Welcome to Kataang Week 2023 Day 2: Injured. Katara gets a paper cut. Aang panics.
Word Count: 1.9k
Preview:
"Yur amaying. Wuf yu, shweetie. Ba-ee too."
Katara laughed and kissed the top of his head. "Baby and I love you too, sweetie. Now where do you want me to put these?" She raised the arm upon which the papers were resting, cradled against her chest.
Aang swallowed and tilted his head toward the trade agreement he had been reading. "On top of that would be lovely."
The waterbender carefully shifted the documents from her arm to her hands and reached over Aang, who had scooted back his chair, to set them down on the other paper. She hissed as she pulled away sharply from the stack.
"Ow!"
Aang's expression immediately turned to one of concern as Katara examined her finger closely, a small rivulet of red forming on the skin of her fingertip.
The airbender stood up immediately. "Are you okay?"
