Hi friend, thanks for this totally not difficult-at-all question. Lol.

Okay, as you know, I can’t ever answer anything succinctly. I am going to take this opportunity to plug this nonfiction book I’m listening to on audio, titled “From Hollywood with Love: The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of the Romantic Comedy.” –highly recommend it to anyone who is a rom-com nerd like me.

The book asks the following question to determine what can be considered a romantic comedy:

“If you removed the love story from this movie, would you still have a movie? If the answer is no, it’s a romantic comedy.”

With this question in mind, here is my list (not in ranking order, I’m just listing them as they come to me.) Also, yes, this means I can’t list the 2000 gem that was Miss Congeniality. That is my #1 favorite Sandy movie. Not to worry, though, Sandy B. still makes the list.

Here we go:

Serendipity: The trope. NYC as a character. The cast—John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale, John Corbett, Molly Shannon, and the illustrious Eugene Levy who stole all of his scenes as the Bloomingdale’s employee making John Cusack’s life miserable lol. It’s just so good. It’s peak rom-com in the early 2000s. Those of you old enough to appreciate that era of rom-coms will know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s one of my all-time favs. 👏🏽

Two Weeks Notice: Sandy B. Listen, I had to work hard not to make every movie on this list a Sandra Bullock-starring film. I feel like choosing your favorite rom-com actress from the 90s/2000s is a little like choosing your boyband team from that same era. I am Team Sandy B. all the way. (No disrespect to Julia and Meg, and so many others who also made movies I loved.) I love Sandra in this movie opposite Hugh Grant, she’s so smart and so funny. The premise of this movie is actually one I still hold out hope for seeing written as firstprince fanfic someday. Sandra is an environmental lawyer who goes to work for a billionaire’s company in order to save a community center that is very dear to her. There are aspects of that plot that I think Alex and Henry would fit into, and aspects to tweak because I don't think Henry would be quite as arrogant or bumbling as Hugh's character. I could talk about this at length lol.

Definitely, Maybe: Again – the cast. Ryan Reynolds. Isla Fisher. Rachel Weisz. Abigail Breslin. The trope/premise?? So good. I love how it jumps through time and shows us how second chances present themselves in our lives. It’s just a really lovely film and probably my favorite Ryan as a rom-com leading man, though The Proposal is a close second.

Hitch: This movie had me in tears, both from laughter and emotions. Also, the scene where Will Smith is teaching Kevin James’ character how to dance. Iconic. "I'm making the pizza!" “Don’t need no pizza, they got food there!” 😂

My Big Fat Greek Wedding: Windex. Nia Vardalos and John Corbett, watching their characters meet and fall in love. Just so damn dreamy. 😍 I also really love how this movie portrays that when you choose a partner, you’re also choosing their family. 💖

Set It Up: I know this is six lol. But I had to add in a movie post-2010. I love this one so much. I know a movie has become part of my personality when I start adopting the dialogue into my everyday vernacular lol. “I overdicked” is said A LOT. 😂 Also GLEN POWELL. 😏

Marie Smith was born in Sawyer, Oklahoma in 1991. Born into a lower middle class family who relied on God and their belief in Him to see them through most days, Marie was loved in a distant kind of way. And that was when the trouble began… 

Feeling everything too intensely, Marie Smith noticed a lot about people. She was highly intuitive, to the point of becoming obsessed with the little details that made up the people around her - most often, women. They were the pinnacle of interest to her and she sought their company far more than the boys at church, though it was hard for her to make friends and keep them. Marie was just a little off, just a little odd enough to be noticeable to those who looked close enough. Her childhood was innocuous enough, though something that escaped Marie was that something had to have gone wrong for her to end up quite the way she did. Maybe it was the distant way in which she was raised - always prayer first, love second in their household. Or maybe it was the hours spent with the bible in her hands memorizing the words instead of out playing, socializing with kids her own age. Maybe it was a combination of those two things - Marie didn’t know, but whatever it was made her different to her peers. 

When Calee Rivers fell into her life - quite literally - one day, Marie knew that she had to devour her in some way. Calee wasn’t new to town but she had switched churches to Marie’s and they were in the same bible study now. She was old enough - nineteen at this point -  to realize that the feelings she felt for Calee weren’t considered proper by her own family - old enough to be able to single herself out like this. So, she kept her secrets and made an excuse that she would be helping out at the church on some days, working on others. But really, she had developed the habit of following Calee as she ran her errands during the day. She set a sort of rule for herself that she would never follow the woman home, though that was broke within the first week and she soon found herself taking pictures of the other girl outside of her window on the nights the loneliness grew just a bit fierce. 

Calee was beautiful, a bright force in Marie’s life, but also a destructive one. They were friends on some surface level but Marie ached to get closer to Calee, to really know her. So, she set about making herself into someone Calee would take a liking to. It worked like a charm and the two were inseparable - though then Calee got a boyfriend and Marie… Marie spiralled. She saw Calee as someone who might have potential, someone who might give her the love she so often wished she could find but Calee was with someone else now. The anger grew and grew about the situation, but Marie could never hurt Calee… 

When Calee went missing, Marie was adrift in her life. The police immediately focused on her boyfriend and Marie - who, at the time, was Calee’s closest friend. And when weeks later and she was still missing, Marie began to spiral. She was concerned that Calee’s boyfriend had done something to her best friend, and so she began following him too… Only to be caught one late night when she had been tailing him. 

The police had a massive field day with the photos they had found at her apartment. The town turned against her, thinking that Calee had died because of Marie and Marie… Marie was arrested the following day. At the time, she had been twenty-two and spent a year in prison following a cut and dry trial that the jury only took an hour to sentence. And then Calee’s body was found and it changed everything. Hair follicles had been found in her grasp - her boyfriends - and the case was opened once again. She had been found deep in the woods surrounding her boyfriends home, and it seemed that there was other evidence linking him to the crime - enough to cast a shadow of a doubt on Marie. She was released following a confession from Calee’s boyfriend. 

She knew that she couldn’t stay in Sawyer. The population is so small that everyone knew everyone and Calee’s family had been so well-liked. Everyone knew what she was - who she was. So, she changed her name to Kate Lancaster and left without a glance behind her. She came to Glen Ellen as she remembered it from a vacation that she’d had when she was small. It was picturesque enough and she found herself a job at the 24hr diner where she could rack up as much time as she wanted there. She hopes the past never comes back to haunt her.

Today I watched an older video of “Tasting History with Max Miller” on YouTube, and was oddly amused by the idea of chartreuse jelly with peaches being the last thing many 1st class passengers ate on April the 14th, 1912.

That prompted me to research more about the Titanic. One thing led to another and I’m looking up photos of the wreck of the Titanic, as you do. I typed “Titanic today”, because I heard the wreck is literally vanishing.

And then…movie showtimes appear in my Google search. Multiple theaters, multiple showings.

Being a little confused, I looked deeper into this, and as it so happens:

We are now at the 25th anniversary of the film “Titanic”.

Why are we still captivated by the Titanic and it’s maiden voyage, which happened 110 years ago?

Why am I still thinking about the Titanic movie? That was apparently 25 years ago! But it feels like 84 some days.

Was I the perfect age at 11/12 for the 1997 movie to capture my imagination? I guess so. I was the perfect preteen age for the Titanic film, as well as The Spice Girls and later as a teenager, the Lord of the Rings. The stars aligned for me.

You think people are nuts about it now? People were Titanic-Crazy in 1997/98! The local library hosted a Titanic movie night (“A Night to Remember”, an old black and white film), and I also attended a Titanic themed tea party. I read the CD insert of the Titanic soundtrack while listening to Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”. My mom sewed a beautiful costume for my sister who dressed as Rose for Halloween, complete with the Heart of the Ocean “diamond” necklace.

Old tech alert: I remember when the 1st vhs ended and it was time to take the 2nd half of the movie out and pop it in the vcr.

“Well, I believe you may get your headlines, Mr. Ismay,” - Captain John Smith. Then…black screen.

Technically it’s a disaster movie, but it had the love story and that did it for many people.

If I’m honest, the love story wasn’t my favorite but the sinking in almost real time was thrilling. I also loved and still love the costumes and the set decorations and the music.

I think seeing a young girl finding joy in life and deciding that she’s never going to be small and meek ever again, was my favorite thing.

Rose got to do everything she and Jack talked about (including, I imagine, throwing up on the Coney Island roller coaster). If she hadn’t met Jack, she’d be long dead inside, if not actually passed on. Her life force was in danger of being snuffed out at 17. She was literally suicidal. I think they could have had this storyline without the whirlwind romance but, at the end of the day that’s what sells.

I vividly remember my theater experience watching it. I was not allowed to watch 2 scenes:

1. When Jack draws Rose like one or his French girls. (So, I peeked through my fingers anyway. And seeing the gorgeous Kate Winslet posing nude on a couch awakened something in me…yeah I’m Bi. My friends swooned over Jack; I had complicated feelings about Rose, and didn’t understand them yet.).

2. And toward the end when we see frozen dead, wide eyed people being pulled from the dark water. I actually listened to my mom and didn’t look; many years later I looked and I’m still sorry.

I also remember looking around me during Jack’s death/“I’ll never let go!” scene, and seeing in every direction in the movie theater, crying women and girls. Tears streaming down faces, heaving sobs, ugly crying. Faces lit up by the blue light the screen was giving off; the scene was a blue dimly lit one.

I never cried at that scene. But I always cry or tear up at these scenes:

1. The father telling his children they’ll be separated only for a little while, as they cry for him from the lifeboat.

2. The scene when the 3rd class mother tucks her children into bed, telling them a bedtime story. The lifeboats were gone, and the ship was sinking fast, and she knew they would die.

I’m not sure how, as a parent, you don’t feel something during these scenes.

I’m not going to go to the theater to experience 4k Titanic. But it’s fun to revisit this movie.

Why Do We Love...

Bebe Buell

The first time we knew about Bebe Buell was as Liv's Tyler mum, instead of someone's wife/girlfriend. We built a website at piczo platform for some actresses we loved (Drew Barrymore, Jane Asher, Shannen Doherty, Kate Winslett, Liv Tyler...), and looking for some Liv Tyler pics, I found this photo set:

Now, Liv wasn't a child actress like Shannen or Drew, so the famous was her beautiful mum! So we started googling about gorgeous Bebe, and we learnt that she was a very successful model in the 1970s and also had been posing for Playboy magazine.

Bebe has a very interesting life. Besides being a very beautiful model, Bebe was also friend of many rock stars, girlfriend and muse to some of them, and was in the American rock/punk scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Todd Rundgren, Jimmy Page, Steven Tyler or Elvis Costello were some of her lovers; Patti Smith, Alice Cooper, Liz and Dick Derringer, Debbie Harry, John Lennon and Joey Ramone were and are some of her friends.

Bebe was a model and a muse, but she is also a rock musician and an author. She is a very spiritual woman and a vegetarian, so she respects animals and nature, beliefs in cosmic energy, UFOs and after-life once we die here. She knows about history and literature too, being a very intelligent woman.

Angel and Nails? No just fuckin no. She is not built for this life. Her trying to stop him from going after his brother pissed me off so bad…even though I know it’ll hurt Angel I really hope the baby ain’t his because I can’t take much of her and all her crying. Like idk why they’re forcing this…mans literally dreads having to go home and then deleting his other baby’s pic? Ion like that. At least he isn’t sleeping in jeans anymore though.

So like I know Angel is the bad boy, fuck boy and everything else but them making him sleep with Letty? I feel like he really never would’ve done that. That’s so fucked and messy and her ass better not be pregnant! He shouldn’t have been the one to go anyways

Gilly was really the only one visibly upset about Coco and I don’t appreciate that at all

I hope something actually happens with EZ and that girl. Especially since Emily is on his line again. Can she just go to jail or something?

January 22, 2021: The Secret Garden (1993)

I KNOW that I’ve read this book. Right?

You know that book that you were supposed to read in middle school, and supposedly did read, but then don’t remember...AT ALL? Like, 5th, 6th grade, especially. Let’s see, there’s Island of the Blue Dolphins (vaguely remember that one), Where the Red Fern Grows (ugh, dog books. They all end the same), From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler (kind of remember that one), Anne of Green Gables (nope, completely gone), The Phantom Tollbooth (inhabits my head rent-free 24-7; RIP Norton Juster, he signed a collector’s edition for me once), A Wrinkle in Time (ditto), Bridge to Terabithia (which I read when I was 8, so...yikes), The Indian and the Cupboard, so on and so forth.

The Secret Garden is totally one of those, right?

Gonna be honest with you guys, I remember NOTHING about this story. But, it’s a fantasy movie, it’s a British classic, it’s been made into a few films...I feel like I owe it to me child self to try and remember this thing. And hey, maybe this movie’ll jog those memories a little, right?

Well, let’s do it! Let’s just jump in! I’m in the mood for some gardening! Hell, it’s the perfect day for it, given that it’s the first day of spring! So, let’s go! SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Recap (1/2)

We start in an unexpected place: a desert. Apparently (and much to my surprise), this is India, the birthplace of Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly).

Mary is a 10-year-old English girl, unhappy with her life in India. Her father is always away, and her mother has parties, to which she’s never invited, and has never truly experienced love from them. She’s always angry, but can never cry, as she’s never learned how. But as unhappy as she is, she’s still greatly affected when a massive earthquake topples her home, and kills her parents. And with that, the orphaned Mary is set to England, where nobody is there to pick her up.

Until, of course, the late arrival of Mrs. Medlock (Maggie Smith), the head housekeeper of Mary’s uncle, Lord Craven. Mrs. Medlock is a harsh woman in her own right, and basically insults Mary RIGHT in front of her, and not even to her face. Jesus, this is a charming family, huh? They make their way to the expansive manor, where Mary also learns that her maternal aunt (and her mother’s twin sister) has died, leaving Craven bereft and broken.

The next morning, Mary gets a harsh awakening when she finds that she’s not going to get the pampering she’s been accustomed to for her entire life, nor is she likely to even meet her uncle at any point. It’s a massive change from India, that’s for sure. This is intensified by her exploration of the house, which she describes as dead, as if a spell was cast on it. And this place is indeed pretty spooky. Vast and expansive, yet empty and unused.

She stumbles upon her aunt’s room, identical to that of her late mother, and continues where wandering through the mansion. She hears someone crying, only to run into Mrs. Medlock, who tries to tell her that it’s only dogs that she heard, and hurriedly rushes her back to her room. Shortly afterwards, she meets Martha Sowerby (Laura Corssley), the kind young servant of Mrs. Medlock, and now the attendant for Mary herself.

Martha seems like a nice girl, but her first interaction with the stuck-up Mary goes poorly at first, with Martha’s very talkative mannerisms rubbing Mary the wrong way. But, after an argument, Mary acquiesces a bit, and Mary learns that her uncle will eventually want to speak with her. But when is...unknown.

One day, after learning about Martha’s younger brother Dickon, Mary is allowed to go outside to explore the grounds, and to find the garden. There, she finds a walled-in garden of ivy, which belonged to her late aunt that died 10 years prior. She learns this information from Ben Weatherstaff (Walter Sparrow), the gardener, who states that the only thing that gets in the garden now is a European robin (Erithacus rubecula). Which we had those here, but I still like American robins (Turdus migratorius).

As Mary tries to get information from the robin, a young man spies her talking to him, and runs away to a white horse. The next day, Martha gives Mary a jump rope, which she actually appreciates, once she learns how to use it. She goes out to the garden, where she meets the gardener and the robin again, and the robin has apparently decided to be friends with Mary, And so, I name this robin Christopher (a European robin), BECAUSE I CAN, DON’T @ ME

She again asks Christopher how to get into the Hundred-Acre Garden, and he takes her through the wall of the garden. However, she still cannot get past the gates, as there’s a lock needed. However, Mary goes back to the house and grabs it, as she’d previously discovered the key’s location. And so, she makes it into the garden.

Said garden is sadly mostly dead, but you can see the former splendor of the garden despite that. She makes her way through the dried plants, and finds a MASSIVE complex there. It was clearly quite the place ten years ago, and Mary agrees She even finds plants growing there again, as she and Christopher walk around. Also, are European robins not migratory? Because it seems like this is fall, and Christopher should’ve moved on by now. Just looked it up, and they’re apparently resident in England and Ireland. Go figure!

Mary keeps going back to the secret garden (ROLL CREDITS), and she one day meets Dickon (Andrew Knott), the younger brother of Martha, and a keeper on animals on the property. Upon seeing him speak with Robin, she reluctantly invites him to see the Secret Garden, as he claims that he can determine whether or not it’s alive. He can, and he does, and the two form a friendship in the garden.

We also learn from Dickon that Mary’s aunt died by accident, falling off of a swing in the garden, which we previously saw surrounded by dead leaves. Some good direction, that was.

That night, Mary has a dream about her mother, beckoning her into the garden when she’s only a baby. She wakes up from the dream, and hears the mysterious crying person from earlier, cascading down the hallways. About as curious as I am about this, she wanders around, and finds the source of the crying: Mary’s cousin, Colin Craven (Heydon Prowse).

Colin is the son of Lord Craven and Mary’s aunt, and a very melancholy young man. He can’t get any sleep, and when Mary has the idea to fetch Mrs. Medlock to help, he asks her not to, as she will not let the two talk, and he’s terrifically lonely. They share things about their mother, and about themselves. Colin’s a very troubled young man, who’s spent his whole life in bed. He’s also been told that his mother died in childbirth. Curious.

The next day, Mary and Dickon are again attending to the garden, and Mary shares that she’s met Colin, which very few people can claim. She continues to spend more time with Colin, who is convinced that he’s fated to die, and has never even learned to walk. Just like Mary, Colin has been spoiled all his life as well, and has been told how fragile he is all of his life. Medlock also insists that people wear masks whenever they’re...near him. Well. That’s terrifyingly relevant, innit?

Mary is nearly caught spending time with Colin, which is forbidden to all but a select few, and Martha discovers her instead. Both of them ask her to leave, so she can avoid being caught. Soon afterwards, Lord Craven returns to the estate, after having been away for a very long time. And FINALLY, Mary gets to meet Lord Archibald Craven (John Lynch), a deeply unhappy man who is extraordinarily melancholy as well. However, his spirits are slightly lifted when he meets Mary, who’s the spitting image of her mother and aunt.

During their somewhat awkward meeting, Mary manages to get the Lord to unknowingly give her the garden to plant her garden in. He states that he’ll again be leaving for the winter, and the excited Mary immediately goes to tell Dickon that they’ll be allowed to plant in the garden. Nature appears to comply, as it begins to rain to help the garden grow.

Mary continues to bond with both the down-to-earth Dickon, and the spoiled-rotten Colin. In the case of Colin, he’s also quite unhappy because his father never comes to see him. Mary learns that this is because his father is afraid to fall in love with him, and afraid to lose him like he lost his wife. But he actually regularly visits him, while Colin is asleep.

He leaves that night, and as soon as the spring is set to arrive. And arrive it does, and the garden grows even greater. Mary, at this point, has also mostly abandoned her previously spoiled and ill-tempered ways. But not her stubbornness, as seen when she gets Dickon to help rip off the boards from Colin’s windows, exposing him to the sun and opening the windows.

Mary goes to help Dickon, but Colin FREAKS THE FUCK OUT, throwing a massive fit that nobody can seem to stop. But Mary is DONE with his goddamn bullshit, and finally snaps him out of it. Just then, Medlock sees this and blames Martha for letting Mary in, slapping her in the face! Goddamn, Medlock! But Colin’s seemingly also had enough, and sends Mrs. Medlock out! She complies, although she fears that this will be the death of him.

Colin now realizes that he probably isn’t dying after al, and Mary now tells him about his mother’s garden. These stories invigorate Colin, and with the help of Mary and Dickon, he goes outside for the first time, and they take him to the The Secret Garden.

Also, can I just say, there are a FUCKTON of animals on this property, and I have no idea why. They’re DIckon’s animals, apparently, but there are a lot of animals there, just saying.

After quite a bit of hard work, Dickon and Mary have made the The Secret Garden something...well, frankly, kind of magical. It’s beautiful, especially now that spring has arrived, and it makes me want to go outside. Unfortunately, it’s fuckin’ 43 °F right now, and I have work in, like, an hour, so I’ll have to wait for a warm weekend.

Colin is as in love with the garden as I am, and wants to come back the next day. But their reverie is somewhat interrupted by the arrival of the gardener, who is surprised to see Colin out of the house, as he’d heard that he was completely unable to walk. And Colin disproves this by standing up in his chair, for possibly the first time. And from there, the group invites the gardener in the maintain the garden as well. Also, Colin starts to think that the garden is magic, and also sort of proposes to his cousin, which is weird (and Mary points this out), but whatever, moving on (for now).

They visit the garden over and over, and Colin eventually teaches himself to walk. He wants to show his father, but they don’t quite know how to find him. In snooping about for an address where they could find him, they find photographs of him and Colin’s mother, which then makes me realize...when does this movie take place? The original book by Frances Hodgson Burnett was written in 1911, and takes place at that time. And knowing that now, the fashions are pretty Edwardian England. Hadn’t really thought about it, but yeah, that seems about right.

They actually find an old camera and take pictures of each other. Also, there’s totally a scene where Mary and Dickon look at each other a liiiiiiittle too long, and Colin gets jealous, but WE’RE GONNA IGNORE THAT (FOR NOW) AND MOVE ON. Mrs. Medlock still believes that Colin’s sick, despite his insistence to the contrary, and forbids him to go to the garden. Mrs. Medlock is basically going through Munchhausen’s by Proxy at this point, and blooms into a full-fledged villain here.

Not that it matters too much, as the three kids eventually a way to escape. And they decide to try and summon Colin’s dad with...well, with a magic ritual. OK. They go to the garden, set a fire, and chant around it, with the intent to bring Lord Craven back to the manor via mystic means, so that Colin can show him his progress. But that’s not going to work...right?

Actualy...it might. Because Craven ends up having a dream of Lilias Craven (Irène Jacob), his late wife and Colin’s mother, whose name I only know NOW because of subtitles. In the dream, she is calling to him from the garden, and when Craven wakes up, he leaves without hesitation and heads back to the manor immediately, to the surprise of EVERYBODY.

Freaking the absolute fuck OUT, he goes to Mrs. Medlock to find his son, only to find that he’s no longer in his bed. Mrs. Medlock insists that Mary is killing Colin with her wild ways, and has no regard for his fragile state of being. He asks to be taken to her, and they discover that she’s also gone, having somehow escaped a locked room. And that is when Martha suggests that they’re in the garden.

Medlock insists that she’s done her absolute best, but Craven angrily rebukes her. She resigns on the spot, and breaks down on the stairs as Craven goes to find his son. Martha, even faithful and ever kind, comforts Mrs. Medlock, who really was trying her best, despite her rough ways of doing so. Meanwhile, Craven makes his way to the garden, where he finds his son walking and happily playing. He’s overjoyed by the sight of his totally fine son, and Colin is excited back. The father and son are FINALLY united.

But Mary is...less happy. As she sees Colin happily reunite with his father, she runs off, with Dickon in hot pursuit. She believes that nobody wants her, and that she’s now destined to be abandoned again. However, she’s eventually followed by Colin and Craven, and Craven asks why she’s so upset.

She believes that the garden will be closed again, now that Craven’s discovered it, and that she will be cast to the wayside. But that couldn’t be farther from the truth, as Craven welcomes both the garden and Mary into their family to stay. Which is...lovely. It’s quite frankly a lovely turn of events. Together, they head back to the manor, where Medlock gets to see Colin walking, which she actually didn’t believe was possible. The entire household is brought out of their melancholy, Medlock included. And the garden is now open permanently. And Mary closes us out with this line:

If you look the right way, the whole world is a garden.

...I’m not crying. I’m not. My eyes are a little misty, but I’m not crying. But, uh...I’m gonna go outside. That was The Secret Garden! See you in the Review.

🎃🖤 October Horror Appreciation🖤🎃

Christopher Smith's Creep is a 2004 horror film that takes place in the London Underground overnight. It's a creepy and gory movie that is slightly reminiscent of 1972's Death Line also known as Raw Meat. It also reminds me of the 80s feral monster tropes as seen in Hell Night, The Final Terror, and so on.

Not sure if the title Creep applies to just the monster played by Sean Harris that stalks the lead protagonist party girl Kate who is played by Franka Potente. Kate herself seems like a creep being disdainful and rude to a homeless man as well as others. Then there is also Kate's coworker, Guy who stalks and attempts to sexually assault her in the locked up underground. It's ok though that's when the monster creep of the film shows up offscreen to give Guy a rough night and twists the film into a gory, anxious at times claustrophobic feel.

Kate really isn't likeable with her behaviour  until about halfway through when she starts having compassion and worry for the homeless couple that the underground's resident Creep has been "operating" on as well as just plain slaughtering for food.

We find out that the Creep's name is Craig and has been living in the abandoned tunnels in what looks like an underground illegal abortion clinic from decades past. This is just another heavy element to an already disturbing plot that makes you squirm when thinking about how Craig grew up in this situation and is still down there living like a feral animal hunting homeless people and treating diseased rats as his pets.

I recommend giving Creep a shot. It's unsettling in it's overall tone and undesirable location and situations. The terror and distress of the characters feels real and that may have to do with the fact director Smith and Harris' method to becoming the creep both colluded to make the set unsettling throughout production.

Harris isolated and became Craig and raised the anxiety among the actors to get a more believable performance. It's low budget with pretty awesome gore effects and make up with an interesting take on the feral human monster aspect.

Two years after the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 was repealed, the sports media landscape has shifted heavily towards gambling. If you are driving, there is a good chance you will hear an advertisement on the radio or see a billboard paid for by a sportsbook. Same thing goes for watching television, especially sports.

Along with that, there has been an influx of new gambling content and media members focusing on that space. And, thanks to the internet, media members don’t need to rely on traditional TV to create and post content anymore. Twitter, Instagram and YouTube have changed the game.

Whether you are a fan of picks or just the gambling industry as a whole, here are six up and coming media members to follow on Twitter. I define up and coming, as someone who is not on a major television show talking about gambling. Full disclosure, I do not know any of the individuals listed in this piece. I just appreciate their grind.

During his more than three decades on WFAN, Mike Francesa did a great job of intertwining himself with the New York sports scene. But as the industry modernized, the connections Francesa built with Leon Hess, Barry Watkins, Bill Parcells, George Steinbrenner and others became obsolete.

Francesa touts having played a role in the Mets getting Mike Piazza, he also helped advance the decision to cancel the NYC Marathon after hurricane Sandy in 2012. And even as sports teams shifted to operate more privately, Francesa said on Adam Schein’s podcast that former Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan used to call the Sports Pope to “pick his brain.”

“I used to talk to Maccagnan, Maccagnan used to call me,” Francesa told Schein while commenting on current Jets head coach Adam Gase. “Now, Maccaganan was an odd guy. He didn’t give anybody extra favors. He never gave me a scoop. But he used to call and pick my brain, I can say that now.”

I can see taking credit for Piazza becoming a Met, but I’m not sure I’d admit to advising Maccagnan. The former Jets general manager is behind most of the personnel moves which helped Gang Green maintain their laughing stock status in the NFL. Bad drafts, bad free agent signings, and he hired a coach who somehow managed to have him fired before the season started.

It might seem a little crazy to believe Maccagnan was calling Francesa for advice on how to run the Jets, but we’ve witnessed similar instances. In 2019, then manager of the Mets Mickey Callaway asked Francesa on-air for advice on how to handle rookie Pete Alonso and the homerun derby.

“Speaking of Alonso, I’ve been wondering this, what do you think about him hitting the All Star Game, in the Home Run Derby?” Callaway asked.

DJ was gifted with her names – Dolores Jean – by having the honor of being the first grandchild on either side of her parents’ families. As a result she thoroughly spoiled and dotted upon for the first few years of her life, and knows she still ranks as the favorite grandkid.

From the time she could step into her dad’s work boots and have enough strength to drag his tool belt, DJ would willingly follow her father to weekend work sites, and want to help out however she could. DJ’s mom wished her only daughter would take interest in other pursuits, but as DJ progressed through school and it was clear intelligence wasn’t in traditional academics, her dad was able to persuade her mom that DJ’s interest and talent for the work was not only good for her, but good for the family business. As a result, while still in high school DJ started working on the hours needed for her trade apprenticeships.

She’s been with her family’s company since, and knows the expectation is that she’ll eventually take over for her dad – just like her dad did for her granddad – whenever he decides to retire. DJ’s taken a few business courses as preparation, but the reality of it all scares her. She knows she’s good at her current job, but the weight of having to carry a whole company and what her family has built is nerve-racking, so she hopes her dad’s jokes about eyeing retirement soon are just that: jokes.

In her free time DJ’s working to grow her side-business, DJ Designs, which she runs out of her grandparents’ garage in Queens. She does custom woodwork and commissions for clients, and has created everything from tables and chairs, to bunkbeds and bed frames, cabinetry, and outdoor play sets. She also volunteers her time for Big Brothers Big Sisters, as well as youth sports leagues in her neighborhood. She got interested in the latter because of having horrible experiences with team sports while growing up. Given her size �� DJ’s 6′5 – and natural athleticism, most of her youth coaches put a lot of pressure on her to do well and better than her teammates. Sports ended up stressing her out and making herself feel horrible whenever her team lost as she felt like she was solely responsible. Eventually her parents transitioned her to a swim team. While there was still a team element involved, most of the competition of individual-based, and DJ thrived. She still doesn’t personally participate in team sports to this day, but actively enjoys watching them and cheering on her friends.

Cheerleader. DJ certainly has the athletic ability to be on the pitch and play alongside her friends, but given her past experiences with team sports she’s more than happy to stand on the sidelines, wear face paint and sometimes Quinn’s jersey, and cheer on the team.

Roommate. After her breakup Marley was surfing couches while trying to figure out a permanent place to land. Noticing that Marley seems down and tired, DJ asks what was up one morning while grabbing her first coffee of the day, and in the end offers Marley the second bedroom in her apartment. Even though she’s lived on her own for a couple of years, DJ’s happy to have someone to share her space with, especially someone like Marley since she has a certain light about her.

Suds Bud. DJ has followed soccer for most of her young into adult life, so she definitely knew who Quinn was the moment she started frequenting ACup. DJ managed to gush only the first two times they met, and then they connected through a shared love of sports and athletics. Together they play fantasy football through her company’s league, and enjoy kicking back in front of a big screen at a bar or at each other’s homes, splitting a six pack and greasy food, and watching whatever sporting event is on the tube.

Faith Friend. Since DJ’s faith is such an important part of her life, she’s sought out others that are as equally enthusiastic and also identify as not straight. That’s how she and Lacey connected, and they’ve attended services at each other’s places of worship.

Faith Friend. DJ and Lola were familiar with each from ACup, and then they happened to catch each other at the same Holy Trinity service. DJ often lights a candle for Mimi, Lola’s mom, and they’ve attended special prayer services together.

♪  Bea Smith

Ex. DJ calls what she and Bea did as dating, even if Bea didn’t want to label what they shared. So as a result, DJ wanted more and needed more from Bea than she was ready to give, so DJ ended the relationship. DJ doesn’t really have it in her to hold a grudge, so they’re on decent terms now, even if there’s still some awkwardness now and again.

Ex. Upon moving to NYC Kate was looking to land her first girlfriend, and DJ couldn’t help but notice Kate and her confidence. They didn’t really have too much in common with each other aside from general attraction, and went on a few dates, spent a lot of time kissing, but whenever things moved toward something more, Kate would get spooked, and eventually they mutually thought being just friends was their destiny.
