i've got the blu ray for volume 1 playing and i'm watching the behind the scenes video and Monty explicitly spells out how important collaboration with other creatives was in building RWBY, saying how he wanted to work with Kerry and Miles on it in creating the world and how he mostly gave them broad strokes. and it's mentioned how they all put the show bible together - i'm gonna put the whole transcript for the video under the cut (which i'm having to do myself because no one has uploaded this video anywhere as far as i can tell and there's no fucking subtitles)
Monty Oum [Creator and Director]: It’s the stories I’ve always wanted to tell versus the idea I came up with about, a little over a year ago. And we were talking about doing another show, and I just kind of half-asleep came up with the idea of a color rule for a bunch of characters. The red, white, black and yellow color scheme was something that was very prominent even in my previous work, so I started matching names up, matching ideas up. Also thinking about like, some of the ideas I’d stored up over the years. At some point or another the word ‘RWBY’ came to me.
Monty: Starting the show out originally, I designed the original character, Ruby, as well as going into the other characters. So once I had the first trailer done, and thinking about the rest of the characters for the show, I started bringing in other artists who I had watched for years. People I’d always said “someday I’ll work with them, someday I’ll have them design for me.” And when I was certain about having certain characters, I first contacted an artist I admired and found over DeviantArt. Her name was Ein Lee, she’s actually from Taiwan, and I found her art probably well over five years ago, and just loved her art style, and therefore wanted to incorporate it into my characters. So, I would do rough designs for team RWBY as well as designs for team JNPR, and she would flesh that out to be even further. To the point where eventually I didn’t need to design characters anymore, she started designing a bunch of the rest of the characters down the line.
Monty: The second person I brought on to RWBY was Kerry, because we had just been having conversations about the kind of show we could make. I’d been working with Miles on Season 10. He was writing scenes while I was making scenes, and so the three of us would have a lot of meetings and collaborate on the show to the point where I just started coming up with the broad strokes eventually and they had pretty much written the bulk of the show. Collaboration’s a big deal here, and I tried to include as many people as I can.
Kerry Shawcross [Co-writer]: Right after RvB ended, we wanted to just go straight into RWBY, but that was like right when we were going into commercial season. So we would work our normal hours here. Like 10 to 7-ish, then we would go back to one of our apartments and just start writing.
Miles Luna [Co-writer]: Monty really was enthusiastic about having these characters that may appear really one-dimensional for like the first few scenes that you see them, but the longer you get to know them, you realise “Oh, Yang isn’t just a dumb blonde party girl. She’s a very caring and nurturing girl, that has had to essentially be there for Ruby when she was young.”
Kathleen Zuelch [Producer]: When Monty and Miles and Kerry came to me, and really took me through the story. I started becoming a huge believer, because I’m a big fan of old school, traditional fairy tales, I love the Brothers Grimm, I love all the Snow White, and I love Little Red Riding Hood. I grew up with all of those stories, and the way that they were very clever in creating this whole world that’s kind of making homage to all of these amazing stories really inspired me to get more on board with what they wanted to do with this whole anime show.
Taylor McNee (née Pelto) [Art Director]: The world of RWBY, it looks very familiar. We wanted a blend of very classic looking architecture and clothing and cars, but we’re also mixing in this really kind of futuristic feel, like these little touches of some really futuristic stuff like holograms and things that you wouldn’t find in a classic [inaudible]. And that’s how we’re making this world unique. Our assets have to go through this pipeline of concept, modelling, texturing, and then finally being able to be put into the 3D program. So we start out with the concept and we usually bring that image into Maya, which is the main 3D software that we use. We have to make a 3D model that looks exactly like the concept that we were given, and it’s quite a process. Basically, we’re pushing polys and extruding stuff until we make the perfect shape, then afterwards we have to UV unwrap it, and then lay everything out on a texture sheet and then paint it, and that will put the image on the model. After that we’re basically done with the model and texture, and then we have to give it to the animators. So then we will set it up in Poser so the animators can grab it and use it for their characters.
Gray Haddock [Lead Editor]: There’s a lot of people working on this show, and there’s a lot of different elements in the pipeline. Editorial kinda serves as a hub between all the different departments, so we help all the communication and coordination between all the different pieces of the show, depending on what part of development that they’re in. Editorial’s getting involved way early in the process, we work alongside the director and the writers and the storyboard artists, and we use the scripts to help develop the storyboards and the camera angles for all those boards. So editorial is responsible for building up the moments of any given scene in terms of the timing and what you wanna look at, at any given moment. So we take the script and we help develop the camera angles and how long you wanna linger in a particular camera angle, look at one character or another or the scene as a whole, and the rhythm of the scene in terms of how long is it gonna take to spend on a particular line or when you want the music to come in, things like that. So we build up a set of animatics with the storyboards, and the first pass of all the audio. This is what then is handed off to the animators, so they can know exactly what is in what shot and how long do they have to animate it in a given shot. And once they’re done animating and their shot’s been approved, then their shot goes to the render farm, we get the rendered shot back and we drop it into the timeline for our episode and finesse the cut a little bit if we have to. But for the most part, we’ve done our job right and everything should pretty much be locked in for the most part by the time we’re getting animation.
Kerry: What’s kinda interesting as we’re creating the characters is, we kinda knew what kind of character they’d be. We knew Ruby would act a certain way, we knew Weiss would act a certain way, but we didn’t really know much about them. So we would get to the point where we’d be figuring out plotlines or figuring out dialogue and we’d be like “What would Weiss say here? What would Nora say here?” And then it turned into “Oh well now we know.”
Miles: Obviously we put a lot of thought into Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang before we started writing the dialogue. I remember sitting upstairs and we made a show bible, and we’re starting- we talked about likes, dislikes, personality traits. One of the first things I remember making was “Weiss drinks coffee. Blake drinks tea.”
Kerry: It’s important. It sounds not important at all, but it’s very important. It says so much about them
Miles: But it’s so important. So much about them, also it says nothing about them. It was just like- that’s just what it is.
Monty: I want the show to have resonance with people who are growing up. Cos everyone’s story is the story of kind of becoming who they are. Especially these days when the path of becoming who you are tends to be marginalised with reality. Having done what I’ve done, where I’ve essentially dropped out of high school, started learning this stuff on my own, and therefore land in a position where I get to take the things I was dreaming about when I was growing up and make it real. I tend to get a lot of response from people who are also not sure what they’re meant to become, a lot of them also have the same bright imaginations and with the way the world is, the hardships of what it means to grow up tends to marginalise who you are, and I would hate that to happen to anyone because the future is in creativity and that’s not something you can just manufacture. I actually would like this show to grow up with the people, so unlike most shows where they tend to be ageless or age very slowly, I’d like our fifteen-year-old fans watching fifteen-year-old Ruby, when they’re twenty-five, to be watching twenty-five-year-old Ruby, and to actually have some resonance with the character. Probably one of my favourite types of feedback is to say “I know this person” or “this person is just like me,” and that’s probably one of the best things about coming up with these characters.

Okay okay okay okay. I will dump a list of thoughts and feelings here:
Tumblr media
good god rvb get better jokes, a couple were still pretty good but woof. the "you guys are so predictable i could leave a prerecorded message" bit was incredibly stale and i felt like the zoom call joke went on for 15 years.
red team's interactions in the early part of this while sarge is still there are so rote, man.
yes caboose's voice is different, i was curious about how they were going to handle that. (there was a falling out with the old guy, i mostly just know he said some shit during the george floyd protests but looking it up it sounds like something had happened earlier and he'd been laid off in 2019.)
fascinated that sarge's death stuck, but i've always thought grif and simmons without sarge was interesting, so. why not. i feel like with red team especially here, the whole point is that life moves on? this is very much a "you grow up and move on from the things you loved when you were young" kind of story and sarge is one of the most big goofy cartoon parts of the show, so ending him and having grif and simmons figure out how to move on from him has meaning i guess. the older people who shaped your world inevitably pass out of it. not to give rvb too much credit, but hey.
poor tucker, but i still think maybe having an incredibly angsty unexplored subplot might be better than having to spend 2 seasons having all his character growth dissolved away in favor of absent father jokes and whatever the fuck all that shit was in 16
live commentary on the whole thing with red team acting like they were abandoning caboose and then coming back to help him:
Tumblr media
also this:
Tumblr media
simmons you poor nerd i'm sorry it took all the way to here to give you anything, wasn't expecting this to be a good season for simmons of all people but at least he got something.
THE REAL CURVEBALL WAS I NEVER EXPECTED THEM TO GET KATHLEEN ZUELCH TO REPRISE TEX EVER AGAIN, i was going to make a crack about how tex getting a better ending would've never been on my bingo card in a billion years but i'm actually not sure this counts because i never cared about chex enough to think about it that hard. raincheck.
tex protecting carolina is nothing but it's also everything.
i'm stupid and missed that doc was dead for a while holy shit that's actually really sad and on the one hand oof, but on the other hand i love really sad things. fuck.
restoration donut only coming back for one last stupid fucking gay joke in an aside vs season 17 centering donut and how he was always such a neglected character. hmm. hmmmmm. hmmmmmmmmm.
it's sad wash wasn't there more, but i really did love "wash throws himself off a cliff to intentionally injure himself and summon carolina instead of contacting her in a more normal way" for him.
and i love that if something bad happens to wash carolina will come down on whatever it is like a hammer from orbit. at the very least, it made me so happy to have it reinforced one last time how much those two mean to one another before the end. after everything i enjoy a moment of them being okay.
overall i do think the group splitting up in pieces feels better to me than them all living together in a big weird codependent cluster forever, it feels like a braver and more true ending, but it's one of those things where season 17 was so much better at thinking about the inner lives of a bunch of characters that it's hard for me to say this is clearly better without reservation in all areas. like, sometimes people matter to you intensely for a big chunk of your life but then you have to move on. and fuck, maybe that's not even forever, but i feel good about grif getting to finally go home and i feel good about grif and simmons saying goodbye to one another and trying to be normal about it. let them have some space from one another. they need space to decide who they are with this part of their lives being over.
nothing they did here can stop me from shipping that and i can very easily fanfic out an ending for them in my brain from this. i'm fine. i'm thriving.
POOR POOR TUCKER, please hug tucker, he has to be going through so much right now.
i wonder if locus, somewhere out there, feels like he dodged a bullet and doesn't know why. (i wish he'd had to deal with red team one last time)
idk i probably have more thoughts kicking around feel free to talk to me i've been so insane about this for so long it's my oldest brainrot-

Someone mentioned to Jen Brown on Twitter that they wonder what really happened with Kathleen Zuelch and Jen responded with a gif that implies there's more to the story. The fandom wiki says Kathleen was fired for insulting her coworkers on twitter due to her "alcoholic behavior", but as you can see from this thread someone made of her tweets, everything she said at the time was reasonable and lines up with everything coming out now.
Yeah. Obviously, you can disagree with how she said things but yeah Rooster Teeth doesn't respect women. Women aren't paid the same, they didn't care about sexual harassment, just general misogyny. There's definitely more that happened behind the scenes as Jen implies and since Kathleen called out Ashley, I will point out that I've seen some people theorize that the manager that harassed Kdin was most likely her since she was in charge of The Know which was the news branch Kdin worked in. When it comes to the whole relationship stuff too, yeah numerous glassdoors and a former employee called out nepotism and employees did date each other, I wouldn't be surprised if some of them were cases of people dating their underlings and I'm kind of surprised no one thought that was weird because if things went wrong wouldn't that affect the workplace?
Also if you're someone who follows me or just someone who comes across this that can edit stuff on the RWBY wiki can you take that part down or change it to something like " She alleged" or "made tweets" instead of just saying she was drunk because you're going to have to give me a citation or something because holy shit man. Another thing to note as well is according to Kathleen's linkedin by the time she made those tweets she actually had no involvement in Rooster Teeth whatsoever. 2016 was her last year doing voice over/producer stuff for them, leaving in December. She was working at Apple when she made those tweets so I mean can't be fired from something you were no longer a part of anyway.

Do you think there might be more to the Kathleen Zuelch thing than what initially happened? Asking because I got wind of a tweet Jen Brown made as a reply to someone implying there might've been more to this story.
Entirely possible.
... But I still don't think my previous stance (that Kathleen making accusations of a woman getting into a position because she's fucking a higher up...on fucking International Women's Day wasn't okay) is wrong. Especially given how many outspoken and self described 'feminists' instantly took her side because 'RWBY bad.'

Hoo boy looks like some people are confused. If you haven’t heard yet, Kathleen had a meltdown/rant on twitter last night.
Here is an imgur link of her tweets from last night (I’d ignore the comments the poster makes, since they’re very biased and you should form your own opinion)
And now for some context:
For those of you who don’t know, Kathleen was a large part of RT from it’s early days. I’ve seen many community members who were around then attest to the role she played. In 2014 she talked on Twitter about how she wouldn’t be attending RTX that year because she felt she did not receive enough support from RT. Here’s a reddit thread in which Kathleen commented on from then.
She was mostly silent until the thing with Shane and Sheena happened. She was on twitter also throwing shade on how she felt RT hadn’t treated her well.
That brings us to last night, where she started making comments about how Ashley is where she is today because of her relationship with Burnie (and regardless of how you feel about that statement, it’s clear she believes this to be true). Barbara “responded” about the situation with Kathleen here on her tumblr. Kathleen had made some comments about how Barbara was unladylike
And so now almost everyone I’ve seen on this site is literally about to start foaming at the mouth at the mention of Kathleen, and while her comments were uncalled for, we must also remember that she probably wasn’t in a right state of mind while she made them. People in pain lash out and that probably wasn’t the true Kathleen we saw last night. She’s angry and hurt that she put so much effort and time into RT and she got so little return, so just imagine yourself in that situation for a bit. I’m not saying that she was justified in anything she said about Ashley, but we also shouldn’t crucify her for this.
And that’s the #drama.

Apparently Kathleen Zuelch came back for the RvB finale. Really surprised to see that bridge get mended right here at the end.
yeah - obviously it's been years since that bridge got burned, and also obviously we don't know what's happened behind the scenes but given what happened, it's not unreasonable to assume apologies were made and the hatchet was buried at some point

"Scandals from within Beacon! Hello, I'm Lisa Lavender and today I'm reporting a scandal started by Beacon's own professor, Glynda Goodwitch! Miss Goodwitch has openly accused 2nd year student Coco Adel of only getting into Beacon by dating Taiyang Xiao Long, who then used his connections to get her in! We will have more of this as it develops."
So, the FUN story behind this; Kathleen decided to make a jab at Ashley on Twitter, when Ashley made a tweet thanking Rooster Teeth and the people that work there. Kathleen said “ All due respect but you married the owner.  Other strong women started and never got your opportunities.” and went on to imply that Ashley only got there because she married Burnie.
What followed afterwards was a glorious shitfest not seen since Shane wrote that letter, with people calling Kathleen out on belittling Ashley’s work, and her responding back in an unprofessional manner.
I decided to have some fun and whipped up this picture which accurately captures the details. Also, there’s screenshots of her tweets.
EDIT: 3/9/17 5:48 AM
Her Twitter account was either suspended, or she deactivated it herself. Regardless, it’s gone, either by embarrassment or in an attempt to hide it all, but the screenshots still exist.
EDIT: 4/2/2017
And it’s back up again. Imagine that.

That is an image of Kathleen’s tweets. As you can see by her language and her attitude towards rebuttals, she is acting very bitter. I might think that she had a point but there are some pretty iffy factors:
1. If this was a problem so long ago, why didn’t she say something back in 2014? This is similar to Shane’s letter where he published it not after being fired but right when RT was getting support for Lazer team: the amount of time since then is pretty iffy, especially as it ahs been three years and she does this on National Women’s Day: A day where people would be at the most sensitive about gender politics like this. Some people may argue that Barbara’s comments are similar but one must know that it is RT policy to not comment on such things and thus she was bound to not say anything. Kathleen was the one who broke the agreement first: ergo, anything’s free game.
2. She doesn’t provide any examples or reasoning for why Ashley is getting special treatment other than she is in a relationship with Burnie. While some people do get through a company like that, that's because they have no talent elsewhere and Ashley use to work for both Xbox and Ubisoft so she has talent and experience thus you would need to say more to make such an accusation work.
3. She implies that she was as much of an important member of RT as Burnie and Matt, the founders. I would say this but Kathleen has only voiced two characters: Glynda and Tex. Glynda was recent and was an okay character and Texas was a pretty boring Mary Sue until the whole “failure” nthing came along. While this is somewhat impressive, I wouldn’t compare that to the main writers of RvB for ten years, especially as the voce acting has never been the big point of RvB, the writing is. This shows a lot of arrogance and quiet frankly none of it is deserved really.
4. She attacked a RT female employee, Burnie’s engaged girlfriend, and Barbara Dunkleman (http://barbaradunkelman.tumblr.com/post/158181071869/a-post-too-long-for-twitter) on national Woman’s Day! Jesus chirst, she couldn’t have waited a day to do this? Seriously, it’s like if someone shit talks RWBY on the main rwby tag on the day of monty’s death! The only reason I’m not that upset is that I’m too tried to be.
5. She supported Shane’s letter. Normally supporting a call out against a company isn’t bad but Shane was mentally ill, he even outright admitted to being depressed and his letter reflects this as he tries blaming every bad going on RT, like stuff they couldn't even do anything about like his failing marriage. He had a very unhealthy obsession with Monty to the point that I should be calling them “Simon and Kamina” with how much hero worship was going on (except Simon overcame his depression.) Instead of getting the guy to a mental hosptital (the guy was trying to turn himself into Monty! He needed help!) she just sat by and used him to attack RT! Thus I am more likely to think she is being bitter than she is being right.
In short: The factors around this make me believe Kathleen is just being bitter and childish about being fired than naything else. Shane had an excuse: he was ill and RT should have helped him more. Kathleen isn’t ill and she's perfectly fine so she has no excuse to do this. Especially on a day meant for celebrating women! While she did get too much shit, she deserves more of it than some people think.

What happened with Glynda's VA?
Edit: Sometime when I was asleep, Glynda’s VA deleted her twitter and so all of the links have been broken. However, someone on Reddit was nice enough to screenshot the whole ordeal and you can find it here in an imgur album.
Ok, yeah, so this is a whole thing.
As people know, last year during the Lettergate Scandal Kathleen Zuelch (voice of Glynda and Tex) was one of the people that was openly supporting Shane in the matter, and a lot of people were wondering whether or not this was putting her roles in jeopardy or not. In addition, she’s said some things about Barb which got her in hot water with RT in the past.
Skip forward to yesterday, International Woman’s Day. A couple of the founders of RT (Burnie and Matt specifically) were posting about it on Twitter, and she began throwing shade as responses to all of them. That alone isn’t so bad, but it goes deeper. She’s accused Ashley Jenkins of only having her position at the Know on account of being engaged to Burnie.
When people started calling her out for this, she started to take a generally passive-aggressive approach or was downright rude to them, so it’s very safe to say that she’s kissed her job goodbye.
Barb’s responded to the tweets on her personal tumblr as well.

Um so you don't need to answer this if you don't want to but who's Kathleen and what happened?
Okay, this is a fair question for the newer fans or people who are maybe only familiar with one or two shows.
But, just before I get started, you’ve got to understand that, as someone who’s been following Rooster Teeth for 11 years and has consumed about 80% of the content they and all of their subsidiaries have ever put out, I’m tired of this shit happening and am not here to get into a fight about it.
Kathleen Zeulch is one of the original members of RT, the voice of Tex in RvB and Glynda in RWBY most prolifically and she’s done a lot for the company overall. She’s always been good to the community and taken a lot of interest in it and did a lot of fundraising back in the day, and I think she still does, but I admittedly haven’t kept up with her enough to know for sure.
She’s been involved, heavily, since the beginning, unlike Dan Godwin, Jason Saldaña and Yomary Cruz who are the other original voices that didn’t take that leap with Burnie, Gus, Joel and Geoff. They’ve been around and poked their head in from time to time, but they’ve always managed to stay pretty separate from the fame of the company. (And yes I know there are others like Nathan, before anyone tries to tell me I’m forgetting someone)
Here’s the kicker, she never got nearly the same amounts of fame as the guys, and has always, somehow been sidelined. A lot of the fans love her, but the media just never took her on, it was always the guys.
I think 2012/2013 is where things started to come to a head, or however you want to put it. She got involved with doing some work with the Make a Wish foundation, because a fair number of fans used their wish to go to RTX or meet one of the members, and if memory serves right (aka I’m not 100%) she wanted to keep doing fundraising for sick kids and RT were never all that supportive of it.
Not to say they were negative about it, but it was more just an “okay, you do that then” kinda response, and that was upsetting. She was trying to do something good and they were pretty indifferent about it, only to come out a year or two later and make a huge deal about doing Extra Life.
Strike 1.
There’s another thing that comes to mind that’s going to be relevant, even if it is minor.
Barbara. She got slightly involved with what happened last night.
A while back there was an RT Life that went up that was just a handful of them playing American Football using a grifball plush. Harmless. But there’s a point around 2:30 where Barb makes some crude gestures in the background, y’know, finger in a hole and hip thrusting kind of deal, just Barb being Barbara.
And the next day, on twitter Kathleen had made a non-direct tweet about it, saying something about how women role models need to hold themselves to a higher standard and what she did was unprofessional. It didn’t mention her directly but Barbara replied that it wasn’t serious and felt like she shouldn’t be put under a microscope. They went back and forth for a bit until Burnie made a comment that shut them up, on twitter at least.
And there’s been a bit of bad blood between Kath and Barb since, and I’ll add to why in a minute.
Strike 2.
It’s hard to know a lot of what goes on behind the scenes, because, as much as they talk about their personal lives on the podcasts and share stories, that’s all they are edited events that they tell us, and this community would do well to keep in mind that, at the end of the day, they all control what we see and hear from them.
So, let’s get to what happened yesterday. (and please bear in mind that I missed all of this because I don’t use twitter all that much)
It was International Women’s Day, as I’m sure most people know, and of course several RT members made tweets about it, including Burnie and Ashley. Who Kathleen replied to.
Someone took screenshots of everything that was said, so, read for yourself and try to ignore the poster’s comments. Kathleen’s since deleted her twitter apparently.
The main thing that people took away from this is that Kathleen unfairly attacked Ashley for being married to Burnie by implying that she’s where she is because of that relationship.
Barbara made a tweet after with just the song “True Colours” attached
Strike 3.
My beautiful wife Mary pretty much summarised my feelings on this, and we have been discussing it.
So, here’s just a few more things.
@pathfinderallison explains the whole thing with Barbara in her post too
Kathleen worked, and she worked and never got the recognition that the ladies at RT get today, and she’s pretty rightfully upset that they’re saying RT has always been good to its female employees when they weren’t good to her.
If you’ve got the time, I’d say you should take a quick look at her Youtube channel, or at the very least her most recent video.
And finally, keep in mind that she put over ten years of her life into that company. Ten years.
