i know some ppl can see katniss as the strict parent, but it has never came into my mind. have you seen how easy she can be w prim? have you seen peeta in cf? strict personal trainer extraordinaire ??!! katniss would look right into her kid’s face- connect something w peeta like her daughters blue eyes or her sons face and would go ‘okay-just don’t tell your father this- please. i don’t want you in trouble my little ducks’ ! allowing them to get away w it. not to say peeta wouldn’t be a fantastic parent- he would just be the more strict on w rule and routine

can we talk about peeta - the one that pop culture & probably most other characters within the universe itself misguidedly believe is weaker than katniss and a pacifist that refuses to kill - murdered brutus, the largest and most athletic/muscular tribute in the arena, a man both three times peeta's size and twice his age, with probably decades of physical training and bloodlust under his belt... and he did it because the love of his life was in danger??

Will never, ever get over the Toasting exists. Collins literally created a wedding ceremony based on bread and fire...the literal two things her main character and her love interest are both tied to symbolically. Like she literally connected them to love and marriage and she could not be more explict with it if she tried.

Make no mistake as insane as we are about Everlark, the captain here will always be Collins herself.

I’ve seen people talk about the tesserae system and how exploitative it is, how it strengthens class divide, how it targets the lower class, but I don’t think I’ve seen anyone discuss that it’s actively a reward for having children.

Same as how women were given a small amount of money and rewards for each child they had in fascist Germany, the tesserae system works to exploit people’s desperation to have more children. Again, it enforces the hope in the hunger games; especially in the larger districts, it can be seen as a reward for very little risk.

It makes participation in Hunger Games (and thus the act having children itself) become an active job - a responsibility for which families are rewarded. This is especially interesting because we do not know much about the treatment of women, but it definitely shows how Panem was at least built on a misogynistic society, if it isn’t actively Patriarchal itself, because it implies that women are treated as little more than mothers when having children is a viable source of food for a while.

And that then exacerbates class warfare. It turns the lower classes on the middle classes, as they are not so desperate as to risk losing a child just to survive.

It’s implied in Mockingjay that the human race was on the brink of extinction in Panem, so rewarding people for having kids was very likely a way to combat humanity’s dwindling numbers.

Boggs, who came to 2 when I did, told me that even with all the plotting, it was a little too easy to rescue Peeta. He believes if 13 hadn’t made the effort, Peeta would’ve been delivered to me anyway. Dropped off in an actively warring district or perhaps 13 itself. Tied up with ribbons and tagged with my name. Programmed to murder me.

Something about gifts within The Hunger Games series being double edged swords…

personal fav headcanon is that both kat & hay have such intense stares. haymitch is staring directly into your soul and maybe right through you at all times and then there's just a mini carbon copy of him doing it a little harder and a little angrier. meanwhile peeta has this wistful kind look. he's not going to harm you but his district partner and mentor probably will.
