Too many big brothers
Characters: Kelly Severide x Sibling!Reader, most characters from 51
Warnings: Overprotective brother figures.
Summary: Going on a date shouldn't be this hard but, your firehouse family make sure it is.
A/N: I wanted more grrr but it might've been too much so I stopped. Sorry for any mistakes, I did not proofread this. Anyways, thoughts???????????
*****
Your cheeks were hurting way too much from how long you'd been smiling, your stomach in stitches from how much you'd been laughing in such a short amount of time.
Over the past week or so, you and your lab partner had been talking and hanging around at school much more than usual. It was a total shock when he approached you this morning at your locker if you wanted to go out to the movies with him and you accepted. Dylan was also decently attractive and shared your sense of humour, making your decision much easier than it would've been.
He offered to walk you home but you had to say no, explaining that you were being picked up but that only resulted in him keeping you company till your drive arrived. Your friends waved goodbye, giggling with smug smiles on their faces, saying things along the lines of having fun and how cute you two looked together.
Very rudely interrupting your conversation, stopping you mid laugh and Dylan mid story was the very familiar sounds of sirens and the honks from none other than a firetruck.
Low and behold, parked right in front of the school was not just one but three red trucks and an ambulance, all the inhabitants poking their heads out so they could wave and shout at you.
Immediately, all eyes were on the firefighters and you, knowing exactly who they were here for. You could say that you were known as the girl who had too much of the CFD behind her.
Groaning, you glared at your older brother who was laughing with no shame at all. No longer were they honking since they got your attention but their shenanigans remained.
"I'm so sorry about them." You apologised, hating that they interrupted them. Collecting your bag, you got to your feet and sent an apologetic smile to Dylan.
"I'll see you at six." Dylan confirmed with you, waving at you as you left and walked towards the squad truck, reciprocating his wave as you did so.
With all your attention now ahead of you, you glared and tutted at your family. "Ha ha, very funny. Thanks a lot."
"Your very welcome." Matt said, nodding at you in appreciation of your thanks. All of the guys and even the girls on ambo looked very proud of themselves for the scene they caused. "It's always a pleasure."
"You guys can stop now, you made your point." You said, opening the door, accepting Cruz's hand to help you up. "You couldn't help yourself, could you?"
"We just love you too much." "Just doing our job." "Your welcome." The squad members said in sync, snickering at your sour pout.
"Tony, just drive." You scowled, smacking your older brother on the arm but doing no damage, only causing the men to fall into another round of laughter.
*****
"So, who was that boy we saw you sitting with?" Was the first thing that was said the second everyone got back to the firehouse. They were all still getting out of their gear and weren't messing around.
You tried to act oblivious, coming across confused at the mention of the boy that kept you company but you failed big time. Upon trying to escape, you were trapped in the middle of a big circle of men that you never once found intimidating in your life but being the centre of attention brought an unnatural amount of nerves.
"Him? He's absolutely no one." You scoffed, shaking your head in denial. "We're just lab partners but that doesn't matter. He doesn't matter, trust me."
You were one hundred percent sure you weren't going to break under pressure but a single glance at Kelly's raised brow and you crumbled. "His name's Dylan."
"And does Dylan have no other friends?" Kelly asked, further prompting you to spill all the details despite knowing where this conversation was going.
You stuttered, unsure of what to say and how you were going to explain yourself. Even with your older brothers dating history, he cared very much about yours and refused to let any boy near you in fear of what would happen to you.
Luckily, this firehouse had been blessed with three amazing women who came to your rescue, saving you from the interrogation that was taking place. Grabbing onto your arms, you were pulled away and taken into the bunk room where you'd be safe for the time being.
Sighing in relief, you repeatedly thanked your saviours for their gracious act but as soon as the door was closed, the three woman sat you down on a bed and gathered around you with knowing smiles. You really couldn't escape this time.
"He wants to take me out to the movies tonight."
And the three practically screamed, muffling their volumes beneath their hands. They were elated that you were finally going out with a boy for the first time in your life. Not only that but being the only female figures in your life, they had the pleasure of helping you with everything.
"What time is he picking you up at?"
"I think he said six."
Oh how the glance they shared sent you so much nerves.
*****
You tried your hardest to leave without anyone noticing you. Being as stealthy as possible, you slipped down the corridors without anyone noticing, the girls sending you big smiles and thumbs up for encouragement but as soon as you got onto the app flour, you were caught.
You could see Dylan standing on the pavement outside where you told him you two would meet but alas, nothing was as easy as you wished it was.
"Would you look at the time? Six already, wow." Cruz said aloud, his attention very obviously diverted from the card game being played. The girls obviously couldn't keep a secret, especially when it concerned you.
Internally, you groaned, cursing the women's horrible ability to keep a secret. From where you stood, Dylan could see you and waved but instead of you going towards him, you reluctantly gestured him to come into the firehouse.
Poor boy was clueless, walking into the firehouse being totally oblivious as to what was happening.
"Dylan, this is my older brother Kelly." You introduced your brother with a tight lipped smile.
Kelly's face was stern, standing in front of the boy very intimidatingly, his arms crossed as if to make a strict first impression. Clearly, he was successful because Dylan felt clammy, shrinking under his glare.
In that very short time frame, everyone gathered round and stood behind Kelly, looking all sorts of scary and intimidating. The message being sent was received very quickly by your lab partner.
"What are your plans with my sister Dylan?" Kelly plainly asked, the question being very straight forward and simple.
"We're um going to the movies, probably get something to eat and bring her straight back here sir." Dylan replied nervously, his eyes flickering to all the firefighters.
Kelly hummed, his eyes not breaking contact with Dylan's. The tension was thick and continued to rise which you hated but you had to let everyone get everything out before you left.
"Come ere." Kelly said, gesturing Dylan to come forward, shocking you. With his arm now around his shoulder, Dylan was brought towards the rest of your family and you understood what was happening.
"Alright kids, have fun." Kelly's demeanour suddenly flipped as he clapped Dylan on the back, pushing him towards you.
Dylan was shaking in fear, almost on the verge of running away had his plans for the rest of the evening not consisted of hanging out with you.
Every single member of your family happily bid you goodbye, wishing you a wonderful night but the second you turned around, they all glared at Dylan's back, burning holes into his head.
"I'm so sorry about them. They're all family and are just a tad bit protective over me."
"Yeah, I can see that."
*****
To say you had a good night was an understatement. For your first date, it was pretty amazing and despite the minor hiccup earlier on, Dylan proved that he was worthwhile.
It was pitch black outside, the few lights coming from the firehouse and the street lamps lit up the street. Dylan and you were walking up the drive with your hand in his where it had been for a while now.
"Thank you." You said, a soft smile painting your glossy lips. "I'd love to do it again sometime."
"Give me a time and date, I'll be there." Dylan replied, reciprocating your smile. With your hand still in his, the vibe was clearly there but you weren't too sure if he caught onto it.
Very slowly, the two of you inched closer to each other but before anything could happen, you were interrupted by a throat clearing.
Somehow, you hadn't noticed the lieutenant and Captain smoking their cigars in their usual spots and for once, everyone remained inside, most likely getting some shut eye before the bells rung.
Kelly rose a brow, challenging Dylan to go any further and Matt was completely monotone but his captain jacket alone was scary enough.
Dylan nodded, reluctantly letting go of your hand but before you could walk away from him, he grabbed your wrist and pecked your cheek before quickly rushing off. Looking over his shoulder, he only looked at you. "See you at school tomorrow!"
Heat rushed up to your cheeks, not fully registering that he kissed you but your older brother and your older brother figure knew exactly what happened and they weren't too sure if they liked what they saw.
"You guys need to stop." You shook your head, failing to keep a straight face and smiling. You couldn't help yourself no matter how much you hated their overprotective behaviour.
"It's our job as your big brothers." Kelly said speaking for everyone as he squished up in his chair, gesturing for your to squeeze in like you used to as a kid which you did without question, resting your head on his shoulder.
"We won't be so easy on him next time."

I hope I can send you an idea where you're Kelly Severides half sister and on duty at Ambulance 61, but also having a crush on Gallo and vise versa but Kelly does not approve. So the mood between you both is not the best as he doesn't want you to be one of his girls. So as the ambulance one time gets in an accident and 51 comes to your rescue, Kelly notices how worried Gallo is and how he wants to make sure your okay. So Kelly gives him a chance and he finally asks you on a date and it's all fluffy ? Hope that's okay 🩷
Blake Gallo- Giving Permission
Tumblr media
Working with her older half brother can be rather difficult for YN. Especially since he found out that she and Blake find each other attractive. They have done since YN became a paramedic for ambo 61. Kelly has made it very known that he doesn't approve of a relationship forming between the paramedic or firefighter. He will often say to YN that he 'doesn't want to see his baby sister get hurt'. Since finding out the tension between the siblings has been high. Whenever Kelly walks onto the room YN will walk out annoyed with how protective he is being.
"He's just being ridiculous" YN tells Brett who's driving the ambulance back from the hospital
"He just wants to protect you from getting hurt. That's what brothers do"
"But Blake isn't going to hurt me that's what I don't get" YN huffs crossing her arms
"Maybe not, but imagine if you broke up. It might be messy and that's what Severide is trying to prevent"
"You know your meant to be on my side not his" YN says looking at her friend
"I am" Brett glances at YN before looking back to the road "but... shit!" a car driving on the wrong side of the road is heading towards them. Quickly Brett swerves the ambulance which causes it to roll down a bank hitting a tree then flipping. On the way down YNs head hits the dashboard making her black out.
Back at the station the alarm rings out signalling that they are needed. Everyone moves around like they are on auto pilot. It isn't until they arrive at scene of the the incident when they realise that it's ambo 61 that's smoking and flipped upside down. Severide is the first to run to the ambulance. Peering in he can see Brett trying to wake YN up. Gallo is next to run down the bank tugging at the door on  YNs side
"Severide it's not budging"
"Capp bring down the spreaders" Severide says into his radio.
Once squad mange to get get the ambulance open, Kidd and Mouch take over making sure YN and Brett are safely out of the ambulance as another ambulance pulls up at the top of the bank. Gallo and Severide nervously follows the stretchers
"She's going to be ok" Kidd placing her hand on Severide's shoulder, but she's saying this to both men.
Of course the firefighters of house 51 all make their way to the hospital worried about YN since she hasn't woken up.
Concussion, a broke arm and leg. That's what Dr Halstead tells the firehouse. Walking into YN's hospital room, Gallo sits down in the chair next to her bed taking her hand
"Hey. Maybe you can hear me, I hope you can. I really need you to wake up YN"
"Gallo" Blake's head turns towards YN's older brother. Blake let's go of YN's hand knowing that her brother doesn't approve
"Im sorry, I just..." Kelly shakes his head a little
"It's fine. You really do care for her don't you?"
"Yeah, a lot"
"I can't believe I'm saying this" Kelly groans "I give you permission to see each other" little do the men know YN has finally woken up. She smiles then coughs making the man's heads snap towards her
"It only took me nearly dying for you to let me and Gallo date?" YN laughs which again causes her to start coughing. Blake grabs a cup and jug of water, pouring the water then helping Yn take a sip of the water "thanks"
"Just take care of her Gallo"
"I will" Kelly then walks out out the room to tell everyone that YN is finally awake
"So"
"So what?" YN frowns
"Will you go on a date with me? Ya know when your out of hospital"
"I'd love to"

“Happy Birthday”
kelly severide x platonic fem!reader, andy darden x sister!reader (idk if i’m using the exclamation points right sorry guys)
a/n: i thought this would be cute, i don’t know if im going to do very many love interest kelly stories bc i rlly just see him as a big brother figure so majority will prob be y/n under platonic and sibling pov’s. I also figured I should write for someone other than Otis for once, but dw those are still coming ;)🤎
^^ continuation: idk if his birthday is correct I honestly did one google search and couldn’t find anything so i just made one up because i feel like he’s a capricorn LOL. also i basically completely made this timeline up because i don’t know if the seasons qualify as one whole year so im gonna say season 6 is 6 years after Andy’s death im so sorry if im wrong haha.
warnings: angst, fluffy, swearing, alcohol, not proofread so anything i missed?
Tumblr media
Y/N’s POV:
January 3rd, six and half years after Andy’s death and everyday still feels the same without him, dull and empty. I’ve worked through it though, just trying to take life one day at a time. The pain began to feel less prominent as I’ve learned to live with it. But today is my birthday. Which is a never ending reminder of who I don’t have with me which is Andy. Another reminder is that today is also Kelly’s birthday, so today feels like pouring acid salt into a cut so deep I can see bone.
Kelly and Andy were best friends growing up, and since Andy was friends with Kelly, I was friends with Kelly. They always brought me along everywhere with them, even when they didn’t want or have to. It was funny growing up because they would pretend to be firefighters and talk about how they were going to save the city one burning building at a time, and me being the 6 year old I was when I started playing with them, I decided that being a paramedic would be easier. You know because fighting fires is only a man’s job according to 6 year old me. So when Kelly and Andy were off to the academy to fight fires, I was off to a school of my own to help them when they get hurt. Now after what felt like a hundred years i’d finished becoming a PIC and craved more in life. So I met up with both Andy and Kelly and told them I was also going to go to the academy to become a firefighter. Andy was thrilled, he talked about how I could continue working at 51 with both of them and it would be amazing. Kelly however did not feel the same. He thought I was making a mistake, so when I went to school and finally graduated, Andy died. This only made me more determined to finish out his legacy and finish the job he wasn’t able to do. 5 years later I was a lieutenant at firehouse 90 since I could no longer bare the pain of working with Kelly anymore, and I was offered a job to go fight wildfires in California. Now a year and a half later I’m back.
I was two years younger than my two older brothers even if only one of them was really blood related. Kelly and I’s birthday landed on the same day though and that made Andy go all out every single year. So yeah, it truly sucked when Andy died and the extravagant parties, and food, and people died along with him too. Today marks 6 and half years of our brother being gone and Kelly and I haven’t spent this day together since. I miss him, I really do but it hurt so much without Andy. Our birthday was just another reminder of him being gone. But now 6 years later I’ve finally decided to put my big girl pants on and celebrate with him.
Kelly was never a birthday boy. He hated all of the attention and gifts, and if it weren’t for me at least sending him a “happy birthday ❤️” text every year to fill the radio silence every other 364 days of the year, he probably would’ve forgotten that he has a birthday at all. But today that will change.
Since Kelly is still a firefighter at house 51 and that happens to be the house i’m transferring to now that i’m back in Chicago, I decided I would surprise Kelly. It’s the least I could do since we practically haven’t spoken in almost 7 years.
One week prior, Third Person POV:
“In exactly one week we will have a female transfer on squad 3. She’s been in California for the last year in the wildfire division of L.A. You guys will welcome her with open arms accepting her back into the 51 family. It’s been a rough year, wildfires are very different from the typical structure fires we see almost everyday. You will be patient, and understanding, and treat her with never ending respect. The only reason she isn’t a superior officer to the lot of you is because she declined the offer…That’s all. You’re dismissed.” After Boden makes his announcement almost the whole house is confused due to the nuclear bomb he basically just dropped on them.
“Um what?” Otis says out probably the most confused of them all.
“A female on Squad 3? Who is she the she-hulk?” Cruz adds on with a joke no one laughed at.
“Do you have a problem with that Cruz?” Boden asks furious at his blatant sexism.
“No sir.” He says in response and sits lower in his chair.
“I’m just confused that we don’t even know who this chick’s name and she gets to waltz in here like she owns the place. How does Severide feel about this?” Someone from the back asks with each word just pissing Boden off even more.
“For your information, she worked at house 51 for 7 years as the PIC then transferred to house 90 to become a working firefighter. After two years of working on Truck, she quickly became Lieutenant, then after three years she was offered a position in California. So yes, she does get to ‘waltz in here and act like she owns the place’. Now for your information her name is Y/N Darden and I don’t give a damn how Severide feels because it’s my goddamn house and what I say goes!” Boden says with complete rage which shut the rest of them up.
After what felt like an eternity of awkward silence Casey spoke up, “She’s family Chief and we’ll treat her as such, we won’t let you down.” He says half serious to scare the rest of the men and women in the room, and half excited because he gets to see you again. Luckily for your surprise to work out, Severide wasn’t on shift that day.
Present Day, Third Person POV:
You stood nervously outside the conference room awaiting your grand entrance to surprise Kelly. As the seconds count down to break the six year technical no contact with Severide, the nauseous feeling in your stomach continues to rise. God you’ve missed him.
“Now please welcome your new Squad 3 member…” You hear Boden’s prominent voice say as he approaches the door to open it for you, “Y/N Darden.” He finishes as you walk through the door and immediately all of the old faces that you’ve missed from your past become familiar again. You can only spot a few new faces, but before you fully process that your eyes land on Kelly’s in the back.
You watch as his face morphs from complete shock and excitement to anger and disappointment. Before you get a chance to say anything though he speaks up.
“What the hell is she doing here!?” He shouts at Boden which immediately pisses him off.
“Severide, calm down! You can either welcome your new team member as her lieutenant professionally, or you can walk out and talk to me privately in my office. We’re not causing a scene in front of my men and women right now.” He says patiently like he’s talking to a toddler throwing a tantrum.
“You know…this is bullshit! Hell no!” Severide shouts once again with all eyes in the room on him he waits a few seconds before he approaches you.
“You need to leave.” Is all he says as he walks out the conference room doors and you’re now standing there in the front of the room embarrassed as ever. Your face would be emotionless if there wasn’t tears falling down it so you quickly wipe them and mutter something along the lines of “this was a mistake” as you rush out of the room.
Boden stands there angry and everyone else doesn’t know what to do. Before anyone does anything though, Casey quickly goes to follow you and tells Boden he’ll handle it.
“Um…as for the rest of you, you’re dismissed.” He says walking out slowly while rubbing his jaw. This was going to be a long day.
“Hey Y/N, wait up!” Casey yells as he runs after you, you stop dead in your tracks at his voice and you turn around now showing your red and puffy face.
“Hey c’mere.” He says as he pulls you into a hug causing you cry a little harder, “Hey, shh, the birthday girl shouldn’t be crying on her special day, okay?” He says as he pulls you away from his chest and wipes your tears himself.
Surprised he remembered your birthday, your hands rest on his biceps as he does so and you sniffle and chuckle as he still treats you like a little sister. God you’ve missed him. And everyone here for that matter.
A little while later Casey brought you to his office so you guys could have a safe place to talk and not be overheard by the others. “I don’t know why I thought he would be happy to see me…” You say as you sip some hot cocoa. It was your favorite winter beverage and since it was your birthday he made you a cup of his famous recipe. Matt always made the best cocoa.
“I wouldn’t worry too much about it. He’ll come around, it’s a tough day and seeing you unexpectedly probably added onto that. Not saying that you’re the cause but just the reminder you know?” Matt says leaning back in his desk chair and tapping his pen on the top of his desk you give him an unsure smile showing you understand what he said.
5 hours into your first shift back at 51 it has definitely not gone the way you were expecting. From the blow up this morning and a winter weather advisory deeming it unsafe for you guys to attend to non life threatening emergent calls you guys were stuck at the house. Not that there was a lot to do, it’s just despite being locked in a building with Kelly, you have no idea where he’s gone.
Sitting around the table in the common room you were telling stories about some wildfire calls in California catching up with the others.
“So there I was dangling out the side of the Helicopter hanging on with one hand over about 30 acres of straight fire, I had barely any grip but my chief advising that call had figured out how to stabilize the helicopter with resources around him so he could get 30 free seconds to help me back in. It was probably the most scary and exhilarating feeling of my whole existence-“ You say but trailing off as someone caught your attention out of the corner of your eye you finally see Kelly.
“Wow! That’s actually insane Y/N i’m glad you’re okay-“ Otis said a little too intrigued in ur story, but you cut him off as you get up to talk to Severide. “Sorry excuse me Otto, I’ll be right back.” You say running off towards Kelly.
“Yeah Otto, she’ll be right back!” Cruz says dying laughing at you not knowing his name.
“There is no way she doesn’t know who I am or my name! We worked together for four years, I mean yeah I was only a candidate but still!” He says genuinely hurt you don’t fully know who he is when he’s had a giant crush on you for years now.
“Hey Kelly wait up!” You shout following him to his office.
“Go away.” Is all he says before shutting the door in your face.
“No! Please can you just hear me out?”
“Go away Y/N!” He yells again but this time louder with his voice cracking.
“Let me in Kelly. Please.” You finally beg rattling the now locked door handle.
Ignoring you he shuts his blinds which only causes you to be more stubborn. Sitting outside of his not-so-soundproof office you start annoyingly knocking on his glass door.
After about 3 minutes of this he opens the door. “You have 5 minutes.” He says surprising you so you jump to your feet and follow him inside.
You sit on his bed and don’t exactly know where to start your explanation so the two of you just sit in awkward tension for about 30 seconds of your 5 minutes.
“I meant it Y/N you only have 5 minutes. Start talking.” he says breaking the silence and starting a real timer at which you roll your eyes.
“Happy birthday.” You mutter watching his eyes go wide.
“What!? You said start talking so I did. I’m paying my respects to my lieutenant!” You raise your voice a bit at his aggression defending your actions.
Still met with silence you sigh and begin explaining, “I only had a year contract in California. I was always planning on coming back to Chicago.” You first admit trying to clear the air unsure if he was mad that you went there, or for any other reason.
“I’m sorry if this was a mistake, I just thought it would be nice to see you again.” You admit starting to feel guilty.
“You know what would’ve been nice? A goodbye. A notice. Even a text just saying, ‘Hey I’m going to California for the next year, see you when I get back!’ Or maybe before that a goodbye saying you’re leaving 51 and transferring to 90, that would’ve been nice. Not just showing up to work a week after your best friend died and finding out the only tie you still had to him left too!” He shouts at you almost triggering your waterworks again, but you can see he definitely triggered some of his own.
“You know what Kelly, I get that, and i’m sorry!” You shout back but taking a deep breath before continuing. “I’m sorry I didn’t say goodbye, you didn’t deserve that. I’m sorry your bestfriend died. You didn’t deserve that, but I want you to know, my fucking brother died! and I didn’t deserve that! I’m sorry you were just another reminder of what I didn’t have and I couldn’t even think about you without wanting to throw up! You know you two were so similar? Basically the exact same person, but when he died, that part of you died too. He died in all of us, so it’s not like I just lost him! I lost both of you and it broke my fucking heart. I love you Kelly, I truly do, but please don’t blame me when I had to take the measures to fix me before I could be there for you. You weren’t-aren’t the same person you were before and neither am I! But I’m back now, ready to start again, and be there for you if you need me, if you are too.” You finally finish your rant and see the tears falling down Kelly’s face as yours once did only a few hours ago. He sniffles a little bit leaving you on heard so you get up to leave but he grabs your hand and points for you to sit back down.
“I won’t stay if you don’t want me too. I can leave at the end of shift and go back to 90 just say the word that you don’t want me on your squad.”
“I don’t want you to leave, Y/N. But I can’t be responsible if you end up dying too…” Kelly finally breaks down after getting the last sentence out and you stand up pulling him into a hug.
Pulling him away from you and cradling his face in your hands you wipe his tears just as Matt did for you earlier and you say, “Kelly, I won’t die. and if I do it won’t be your fault, just like Andy’s death wasn’t your fault either. It wasn’t anyone’s, it was his stupid mistake for not listening to a confirmed order before going in. I know it’s bad of me to blame the dead for his death, but it’s true and he can cry about it from his grave if he has an issue.” You chuckle at the last sentence as does Kelly and you both smile.
“You’re just gonna have to trust me Severide, okay?”
“Okay.” He whispers back and places a kiss to your forehead then resting his forehead of yours. God it was nice to have your brother back.
At the end of shift Kelly brings you to Molly’s where Herrmann had set up a surprise party for the both of you. It was a good night. After a few drinks and being separated from Severide he finally comes and talks to you again.
“Hey there’s the birthday boy!” You greet Kelly with a hug and kiss on the cheek.
“Hey, um, Otis just told me earlier on shift you called him Otto?” He says dying laughing.
“Yeah and?” You say genuinely confused?
“That’s not his name! It’s Otis!?” Kelly continues laughing at how you could’ve screwed that up and your jaw drops.
“You’re kidding!” You say feeling horrible now.
“No i’m not! You worked with that kid for four years before you transferred how did you fuck it up that bad!” Kelly exclaims as the both of you are dying laughing.
“Omg, I feel so bad! Do you think he’d forgive me?” You say looking around searching for where he was only to find him already staring at you.
Kelly looks in his direction then looks at you and nods his head yes. “Something tells me he’d forgive you.” he says knowing about his love struck elevator guy.

Request: I would love to see something Like IT’s Career day at school and Jay and Will come to teach about their jobs along with others. And Halstead's sister gets bullied. During the break of moving in between careers someone comes and beats her up in like the bathroom and leaves her there and no one notices her being gone untill the end of the day. (I kinda want like Fire, Med, and Pd to find her)
sorry if it doesn’t make much sense you can choose how to end it and stuff
I also LOVE your fics I can’t wait to see more❤️
Authors Note; Y’all really love the angst huh, gotta deliver,, and hopefully you enjoy this little drabble. Also, part of me really wanted to title this, 'big sister hugs' because I think that Hailey would be the best big sister and also give the best big sister advice.
warnings: private girls school (yes that's a warning), bullying, getting jumped (i guess?), hospital and injuries,, Jay and Will not knowing girl bullying and being stubborn, a very poorly written plot
Tumblr media
High school was not always easy, but you were comfortable at your school with your friends. That was until there was a security issue and Jay’s information got leaked. Your apartment, school, Jay’s license plate, everything that could be used to track him ended up in the hands of the ‘bad guys’. Jay and Will had broken the news to you that they were pulling you from your current school, and moving to another school closer to Will’s. A private girls school, the ones with the fancy uniforms and stuck-up kids who thought the law didn’t apply to them because they had money. You hated it. You had begged Jay and Will to let you stay, but there was no changing their mind.
The first week was hell, you knew no one. Starting in the middle of the year meant that everyone knew you were the new girl. You were enrolled under your mother's maiden name, for extra safety. It was weird not hearing your name followed by ‘Halstead’. After the first week was gone, you decided to stick it out until the problem with Jay blew over, by then, you could probably convince them to let you go back to your other school. Three weeks passed by and intelligence solved Jay’s leak.
“So,” You began on Sunday family dinner, “Now that the whole leak in PD is over…”
Jay and Will shared a look from across the table.
You narrowed your eyes, “What?”
Will ran a hand down his face, “Listen…”
“You won't let me go back.”
“It’s a better school-”
“Better?” You spat, “How is it better? I hate it there!”
“It’ll get better,” Jay said, “You just need more time to adjust.”
“I don’t want to adjust-”
“We’re not pulling you out,” Jay said, “I know you're struggling right now, but you’ll make some friends and-”
“I can’t believe you.” You pulled away from the table, leaving your half-eaten dinner where it was and stomping off to your room. Jay stood to follow, ready to scold you for storming away and having such an attitude.
“Jay,” Hailey grabbed his arm, “Let her cool down.”
Tumblr media
Jay and Will didn’t budge on your school. You had gone from begging to bargaining with no success. Now you were giving them both the silent treatment. You knew it was immature and frankly ridiculous, but you were too mad to think clearly. Jay had already scolded you for not talking to him for the last week. You had ignored him.
Hailey was the only one you spoke too, because it wasn’t her fault that Jay was being stubborn. Even so, you didn’t tell her everything when she stopped by your room. Namely, the career day that was coming up. You knew telling her meant she would tell Jay. And Jay and Will had a terrible habit of embarrassing you at school. At your last school's career day, Will and Jay had come and talked for hours about their funniest stories. You knew if they came this time, your peers wouldn’t be as amused.
When career day did roll around, your dean stood in front of the school in the auditorium, introducing students and their parents. Your school was much smaller than your last one - something about smaller class sizes being better for learning - so the auditorium wasn’t fully packed.
Not everyone brought their parents, but the popular kids with parents who had good jobs came. Like the group of girls who hated you, who all brought at least one parent. Your dean invited students to the stage by class and then had the student introduce their parents. Your class was last, the biggest number of parents who had come. You were sat at the end of your class, mostly because you didn't have anyone to bring. Not that it bothered you.
“Next up, we have Olivia and her mom, Jen.”
Jen was a dentist, she spent 10 minutes explaining how her job worked and then opened for questions. There weren’t many, mostly a few questions from seniors about collages and other stuff.
Then it was Sophie, with her dad the Banker.
By the time the girls who hated you were called up, you were ready to fall asleep. No one here had an interesting job, most of the jobs were boring well playing jobs that you could never see yourself doing.
The main girl who didn’t like you was Madison. She wasn’t fond of how the teachers asked you for answers in class, not that you could do anything about that. Her friend group was made up of 5 or 6 girls who were seemingly lovely. All smiles and compliments around teachers but spread vicious rumors and lies when adults couldn’t hear. You had heard them speaking about you a few times, not that you cared. It wasn’t great to be the new girl with all the rumors, but you had banked on leaving the school before for long. Which, you knew now, wasn’t an option. So now you were stuck with the girls who all hated you for rumors or lies that you didn’t even know.
Madison brought her mum and dad with her, real estate agents who worked together selling multi-billion dollar houses. The whole time she had a smug look on her face. When she sat back down in her row, she turned in her seat, looking back at you.
“Didn’t bring anyone?” She asked.
You didn’t bother replying.
“Is it because your parents are coke addicts?” Her friend beside her pressed.
How that rumor even started you didn’t know, it was so absurd.
“Or is it because they’re dead?” Madison pressed.
You gave her a bored look, “I’ll take my family over your fraud family any day.”
Madison opened her mouth to bark something back, but was shushed by your teacher. She turned back to face the front, arms crossed over her chest. No doubt stewing in your words.
“We now have some guests to speak to you,” The Dean said through the microphone, “We reached out to some of our first responders and invited them to come speak to you too. Everyone please welcome Dr Asher and Dr Halstead from Gaffney Chicago Med.”
Will and Hannah walked to the stage, both in their Med scrubs with doctors coats on. Will was looking for you, you could tell from the way his eyes scanned the faces in the audience. You slumped in your chair, avoiding looking at him at all.
How did he find out? Did he and Jay find out somehow? Did your school contact them?
You really wanted to disappear now, your face was no doubt bright red by how much it was burning. You prayed silently that Will hadn’t told Jay, but you knew it was a useless prayer. If Will was here Jay would be too.
You got your answer when the dean explained that there were more guests outside on the fields. She ordered everyone to head that way, ushering students with promises of something ‘exciting’.
Outside, firehouse 51 had parked their rigs on the grass. 51 had their ladder extended, Mouch standing at the controls grinning like a champion. Not far from Mouch was Trudy, flanked by two patrol cars and their officers. Looking across the gathered first responders it didn’t take long to spot Jay and Intelligence. Their own cars were parked on the grass, the lights on. Everyone but Voight had their vests on, adding to the dramatic atmosphere already created.
Students huddled around, entranced by the cars and rigs which you had seen plenty of times. You tried to hide towards the back, but Kelly had spotted you and tried to usher you closer. You shrugged back at him, trying to make it look like you were stuck within the crowd.
“Firstly, we would like to thank Sergeant Trudy Platt and Sergeant Hank Voight, as well as Chief Wallace Boden for coming today. We are hugely appreciative to hear from you,” The dean spoke into a microphone, “Secondly, I want to ask students to be respectful, as these hard working men and women have taken time out of their busy days to come and speak to us. So we are going to listen and show respect. There will be time for questions and demonstrations at the end. Please Welcome Sergeant Trudy Platt.”
The crowd clapped as Trudy took the mic, but it wasn’t too enthusiastic. Trudy gave a similar speech to last year. Along the lines of what made district 21 special, intelligence and the hardworking patrol officers. She talked about fake calls and how breaking the law would wind you up in her cells etc. It was funny, a few quips earning laughs from teachers and parents. But you had heard it all before. You were dreading what the others would say. You didn’t want everyone knowing your brother was a cop, that would cause way too many issues.
So instead, you slipped away from the crowd, heading back towards the school building to hide in the bathroom.
You didn’t think anyone would notice, most people were paying attention to the speakers or interested in the rigs. You were wrong, of course, being followed almost immediately by Madison and a couple of her friends.
You got to the lockers before they announced themselves.
“What did you mean my parents were frauds, bitch?”
You turned around in fright, not even hearing them sneak up on you.
“I didn’t mean it,” You replied, “I’m sorry.”
You were, kind of. Mostly you were sorry that you had said it, because she genuinely seemed shocked. But this was Chicago, anyone with any money committed fraud, it was kind of the standard.
“I don’t care if you're sorry,” Madison snarled, she was taller than you so when she stepped closer you couldn’t help feeling intimidated. “What did you mean?”
“Madison-”
One of her friends pushed you hard against the lockers with a forearm over your collar, “Answer the question.”
You were by no means a confrontational person. Growing up, Jay always tried to teach you to talk out your issues, violence or fighting wasn’t a good solution. Will was the same, although both of them weren’t always the best at doing as they counseled.
“I just meant that,” You were panicking under the glare of all three girls, “You know, this is chicago and-”
“And what? Everyone is a criminal like your addict parents?” Madison got in your face again.
“My parents weren’t addicts,” You scoffed, now annoyed that she wouldn’t let that go.
“No?” The girl who was holding you back moved her arm further up your neck, pressing against your throat, “Then where are they?”
“If my parents were addicts, would you really think I'd be in a private school?” You pressed, “Use your brain for once, please.”
You should have known that would piss Madison off. She let out an annoyed scoff then pulled back her fist and punched your square in the nose. The force slammed your head back into the lockers, the sound echoing through the empty halls. The punch wasn’t hard enough to break your nose, but you would feel the blood start to drip down your lip. Madison shook her hand like she had taken more damage than you had.
“Want to say that again?” The third girl finally spoke up.
It was like they were all gaining confidence in the security of the three of them. When one of them said something the others would laugh and smirk.
“I don’t like bullies, you know,” Madison said.
God, the irony.
This time the punch came from the third girl, landing in your stomach. You didn't know her name, but she was on the volleyball team, so her punch was much stronger. Your body doubled over, arms crossing over your stomach as your lungs tried to fight your diaphragm for air. The arm holding you up was dropped, and your body fell to the ground as you tried to force yourself to take some deep breaths.
“This is what you deserve,” A girl said, before another blow landed on your ribs. The wind was knocked out of you again, causing you to cough and choke.
Madison crouched down to your level, “Bullies like you deserve to be put in their place.”
You didn’t have time to appreciate the irony this time, because she was kicking your head, hard.
Your body reacted on instinct, curling into itself to try to protect you from another blow that was sure to come.
“Hey!”
The three girls sprinted at the voice, running away from their actions.
“Hey, kid,” A hand on your shoulder made you flinch, when your vision cleared you realized it was just Kelly. He held his hands out to show you he meant no harm, then gently helped you sit up.
“You’re alright,” He said softly, steading you sitting against the lockers. You couldn’t even reply, focused solely on breathing through the pain in your head and side.
“I found her,” Kelly said into his radio, “North Hallway, bring a jump bag.”
Kelly gently touched the side of your face, tilting your head to look at the side you had been kicked.
“You still got that med kit in your bag?” He asked, knowing Kidd had taught you that in girls on fire.
“Yeah,” You said softly, your voice above a whisper.
Kelly ripped open your bag, rummaging through it until he found the small first aid kit. He was only after gauze, once he secured it, he ripped the package open and pressed the gauze to your head.
You winced, instinctively pulling away from him.
“I know,” He said, sitting down next to you so he could hold the gauze in place, “Sorry kid.
You both looked up as the sound of footsteps came running towards you. You might as well have been on fire, the entire house was rushing towards you. Jay and Intelligence were there too, Will and Asher running along beside everyone.
“This is overkill,” You said to no one in particular.
Kelly chuckled, shuffling so that Will could take his place next to you, “We’re all here for you, kid.”
Will replaced Kelly’s hand with his own, when Kelly pulled away you could see blood on his hand.
Jay croached on your other side, letting Will, Hannah and Brett take care of you.
“What happened?” He asked, looking over your bloody nose, head injury and the way you were holding your side.
You didn’t want to be known as a snitch, one glance behind your brother and you could see students being held back by teachers and 51. The school day was almost over, everyone would be gathering their things to leave. You hoped you weren’t in front of someone's locker who hated you, this would definitely make them hate you more.
You looked back at Jay, his eyes filled with worry, “What happened, squirt?”
“I, uh.. I fell.”
Will scoffed, “You fell?”
“Yeah, I’m clumsy,” You said.
“You fell and hit your nose and the side of your head?” Hannah asked, voice soft, “Are you sure that's the story you want to tell?”
Over her shoulder, Kelly was talking to Voight and Hailey. Hailey was pointing something out, a camera that was positioned above one of the classroom doors.
“Yeah,” You didn’t sound confident at all. But right now, you wanted to be anywhere but here.
Jay looked pissed, but he didn’t say anything. He got to his feet and stood out of the way as Hannah and Will helped you stand. They lead you over to the stair chair, despite your very vocal argument that you were fine.
Being wheeled through the crowd of students and their parents was the most embarrassing thing you had ever experienced. You passed by Madison at one point, who was leaning against her locker talking to her parents like nothing ever happened. You avoided looking her way, instead focusing on what Brett was saying about getting to the rig.
Outside the building things were less stressful and crowded. You managed to convince the four hovering adults that you could stand on your own to get into the back of the ambulance, even if you didn’t really think you needed one.
“I’m really fine,” You argued for probably the fifth time, “I think you're overreacting.”
Will sighed, running a hand down his face, “You are too stubborn for your own good,” He muttered.
Violet chuckled, “Just lay back, alright? You aren’t getting out of this, no matter how much you complain.”
She was right, but that didn’t stop you from pouting the whole way to Med.
At Med, Will hovered as Hannah stapled the laceration on your head. You weren’t too happy about the idea of being stabled back together, but Will had taken a photo of the laceration to prove you needed it.
“That’s so gross,” You said, pushing the phone away from you.
“That’s why you need staples,” Will explained, rolling his eyes.
Not long after Hannah had treated you and left you to rest, Jay, Hailey and Voight walked in.
“Are you doing alright?” Jay asked, hesitant to start another argument.
“I’m fine,” You repeated, “I don’t know why everyones making such a big deal.”
“You were attacked at-”
“I fell.” You interrupted.
“Y/N-”
“Jay.” You echoed in the same tone.
Jay's face flashed with irritation, he looked to Will for help.
“We know that’s not true,” Will said, giving you his best parental disappointed look.
“The whole thing was caught by the security cameras,” Hailey spoke softly, she was the only person in the room who knew what it was like to be a teenage girl in high school, “We just want to know what they said.”
You tried to come up with some kind of explanation that wouldn’t get anyone in trouble, but you came up short.
“It’s not that big of a deal,” You shrugged, avoiding eye contact with all of them.
Will leaned forward, he looked wary, “Listen, squirt, we want to help, but we can’t unless you tell us the truth.”
“That is the truth,” You argued back, crossing your arms definitely, “It’s not a big deal.”
“You’re in the hospital!” Jay gestured around, “What about this is ‘not a big deal’.”
You scowled, refusing to say anything else and just sitting silently.
Voight squeezed Jay's shoulder, “We’ll let her rest, come back later?”
Jay nodded, not bidding you goodbye as he stomped out of the room. You hadn’t seen him this mad in forever, you weren’t sure if this would blow over as easily as your other fights. Voight followed after Jay, he told you to get some rest then followed his detective to try to calm him down.
Will got up to leave too, he told you to rest and said he would come back soon. When the three left, it was only Hailey who stayed behind.
“I know you’ve been struggling at school,” She took a seat on the bed next to you, “I know what that’s like.”
You fiddled with your fingers, not wanting to admit she was right.
“You know what happened today wasn’t right,” Hailey continued, “Jay wants to press charges.”
“What? No! That’ll just make it wor…” You stopped yourself.
“Make what worse?” Hailey pressed.
You took a deep breath, trying not to get upset.
“Whatever is going on, I can help,” Hailey promised.
“You can’t get me out of that school,” You scowled.
“I think after today, that might be possible.”
You leaned back into the pillows. Dr Asher had given you some pain meds for your head, they removed the sharp pain and replaced it with a dull throb. You could feel it more as you got more upset.
“There’s this stupid rumor that my parents are addicts,” you explained, “Madison is always taunting me with it, saying that's why no one ever comes to parent evenings or teacher interviews…”
Hailey didn’t say anything, she just sat listening patiently.
“Before you guys came, she asked why my parents weren’t here and I said that I would rather have my family over her fraud one.”
Hailey nodded as she listened.
“It was stupid and as soon as I said it, I regretted it. When we were outside I went inside to go to the bathroom and Madison and her friends followed me… They, uh… Madison wanted to know why I said it and I apologized but she didn’t- she, she didn’t care and…”
Hailey got the cue, “Okay. It’s alright.” She pulled you into a gentle hug. “Everything’s going to be alright.”

You heard your phone buzz from where you had dropped it on the coffee table three and a half hours ago when you got home from work.
You heard your phone buzz from where you had dropped it on the coffee table three and a half hours ago when you got home from work.
You, me, Jay - Molly’s in an hour, you read the new message from your best friend, Kelly.
Groaning, you shifted to grab and unlock your phone. I feel like shit. I left work early. Rain check.
Another ding as a sad face popped up at the bottom of the thread. You sighed as you set the phone back down, wishing you felt up to hanging out.
You spent the next forty-five minutes tossing and turning on your couch in an attempt to find a comfortable position. The second half of Safe Haven played across the screen, but you weren’t really paying much attention.
Suddenly, you heard keys jingling outside your door before the deadbolt clicked open. The only other people who had keys were your brothers, and they never used them to come in while you were home.
Before you could further analyze the intrusion, Jay hollered through the barely-cracked door. “We’re coming in. Am I going to be scarred by anything I might see?”
You rolled your eyes and sat up, wincing at the flare of pain in your abdomen. “I’m not naked, if that’s what you’re asking. And who is ‘we’?”
“We brought you soup,” said Kelly from the kitchen. “I also grabbed tissues, cold meds, Excedrin, and Midol. I wasn’t sure what you might need.” You heard the rustle of bags and clunks of things being set on the counter.
“I didn’t need any of that, but I appreciate the thought. However, I don’t really appreciate you telling my brother I feel crappy.”
A moment later, Jay was snatching the remote from you. “I just came for the beer and the game.” You knew he came because he was worried, even though he wouldn’t admit that.
“Hey!” You reached to take it back as he lifted it over his head. “I thought you guys were going to Molly’s.”
Jay tossed the remote back once he’d turned on the hockey pre-game. “Kelly wanted to come hang out with you.”
“Wow. I love you, too, bro.” You carefully laid back down, shifting a few times until you found a somewhat comfortable position. “But since you are here… can one of you go grab my heating pad from my bedroom closet?”
Jay simply nodded before disappearing down the hall, returning a minute later with the heating pad in hand. He also had your favorite blanket tossed over his shoulder. It was his way of silently showing his concern. He plugged in the heating pad and tossed it and the blanket on the couch next to you.
“Thanks, Jay.” You smiled gratefully.
“Do you want the soup?” Kelly asked. ”Or we have pizza coming shortly, too.”
“Um, no. Nothing right now.” You shook your head. “I’m too nauseous. Thank you, though.”
Jay sat down in the recliner as Kelly came in and handed him a beer.
Kelly then lifted your feet and set them on his lap as he sat down. “You sure you don’t want anything else?”
You shook your head and pulled the now-warm heating pad across yourself. “This is all I need at the moment. But I’ll let you know if I change my mind.”
You made yourself comfortable as the two of them started to discuss the hockey game as well as how the rest of the season had been going. A little while later, there was a knock at your door.
Jay stood quickly. “I got it.” He returned a minute later with two large pizza boxes as well as a smaller box you suspected held cheesy garlic bread. He set the stack on the coffee table and slid one pizza toward Kelly before opening the other. “We got your favorite. We will try to save you some.”
You leaned up and punched him in the shoulder. “You’re so mean.” You tried your best to hide the wince from your sudden movement.
“Ouch!” he said, grabbing his arm dramatically. “If I was mean, I wouldn’t have offered to save you any.”
“Mmhmm,” you hummed. “You said try, not that you would save some.”
Before long, there were several slices missing from both boxes and the two of them were cheering and booing loudly at the television. You laughed and silently hoped they weren’t disturbing your neighbors too much.
During the first intermission, Jay’s phone dinged with a new message alert. He pulled it out of his pocket and quickly read the message on the lock screen before pocketing it once more. “Will is on his way over.”
Tossing the heating pad over the back of the couch, you rolled your eyes and groaned loudly. “Seriously? You couldn’t let me suffer in peace? He’s gonna be all doctory.”
Jay shrugged. “He wanted to watch the game. I didn’t even tell him you didn’t feel good.”
You scoffed. “Uh huh. You told him you were here instead of Molly’s so he already knows something is up.”
About ten minutes later, you heard your front door open without so much as a warning knock.
“Do none of you have manners anymore?” You asked him as he entered the living room. “And for the record, I am fine so do not ask.”
Will chuckled as he raised his hands in surrender. “Hello to you, too.” On his way to sit on your loveseat, he grabbed a slice of pizza. You watched as he and Jay exchanged pointed looks.
Over the next half hour or so, you noticed all three of them sending worried glances your way until, finally, you poked Kelly in the thigh with your foot. “Can I have that soup now? Maybe it’ll help my nausea.” You didn’t think it would, but it might get them to stop looking at you like you were about to break.
He nodded and got up, walking into your kitchen to warm it up for you. You shifted to sit up while you waited for him. Struggling to find a comfortable position, you noticed that Will was watching you more intently.
Kelly brought in the soup and sat down once more. “How do you want to do this?”
“Umm, can you pull the coffee table closer for me?”
Jay stood from his chair to push the end of the table towards you and move the pizza boxes out of the way. Kelly set the soup in front of you and handed you a spoon.
“Thanks.” You smiled as you slurped a spoonful of broth. Continuing slowly, you drank about half the broth and ate some of the noodles. Unexpectedly, your stomach flipped uncomfortably. You dropped the spoon back into the bowl causing a loud clatter.
All three sets of eyes were on you as you stood suddenly. You didn’t even attempt to hide the pained whimper that escaped with the movement.
“You okay?” Will and Jay asked in unison as Kelly reached out, prepared to steady you if necessary.
You groaned. “Yeah, peachy. Stay,” you directed them as you moved as quickly as you could to the bathroom. Flinging the door shut, you fell to your knees just in time to empty your stomach into the toilet. The pain in your knees was almost unnoticeable with the stabbing pain that flared through your right side. You tried to breathe through your nose as another wave of nausea crashed through you. Maybe you weren’t fine after all, but you weren’t ready to admit that to anyone, especially Will.
When you were pretty sure you were done, you flushed before sitting back against the wall. A knock broke you from your thoughts. “You alright in there?” Kelly asked.
“I’m fine.” You stood slowly and rinsed your mouth out before pulling the door open and meeting his concerned green eyes. “I swear. I’m really fine,” you lied. “I shouldn’t have tried to eat.”
Kelly’s hand hovered behind you as you made your way back to the couch. As you sat, you pulled the heating pad back over your lower abdomen, even though it’d done nothing to help the pain earlier. However, now you were chilly, and it would help with that.
“Is that normal?” Will asked. “Nausea and vomiting with cramps?”
You shrugged, debating what to tell him. “It’s happened before, but not always, no.”
He hummed, clearly deciding if he wanted to push. “Is anything else weird today?”
“Not really. Not unless you count being four days early.” Spinning to lie back down, you pulled your blanket over yourself.
“Are you cold?” Jay asked.
You glared at him. “Maybe a little. I just like to have a blanket when I feel crappy. Does that mean something to you? You’re the one who brought it out here unprompted.”
“Have you actually started your period?” Will asked.
Groaning, you asked, “Can we not have this conversation?” He just stared at you waiting for an answer. “Ugh, fine. No. No, I haven’t yet.”
Will stood and walked over to you. He placed the back of his hand on your forehead.
You knew there was no convincing them at this point, but decided to try anyway. “How many times do I have to tell you? I am fine!” Will narrowed his eyes at you before he walked away. You heard him opening the cabinet in the bathroom. Looking between Kelly and Jay you asked, “What is he doing?”
Jay shrugged. “How am I supposed to know?”
Rolling to face towards the back of the couch, you groaned.
Will was back a moment later. He knelt down in front of the couch and rolled you back to face him. “Open,” he directed, lifting your thermometer into your view.
“No.”
Will just sighed. “If you're right, then this will be normal and you can say ‘I told you so.’ Just humor me?”
“When I’m right, you are going to buy me dinner next week. Somewhere nice.” You held out your hand for him to shake.
He took your hand without shaking it. “I’ll buy you dinner next week, regardless, if you stop being difficult.”
“Fine.” You shook his hand, took the thermometer from him, and placed it under your tongue.
It was quiet as you waited, the game having been muted at some point. When the thermometer beeped, you pulled it out and handed it to Will, not even bothering to check it as you gave him a smug grin.
Jay leaned over to see the reading for himself as Will announced, “101.6, you have a fever.”
You shrugged. “So what? I have cramps and the flu or something. I don’t know what that proves.”
Will shifted to sit on your coffee table. He pulled off your blanket and heating pad despite your protests. He pushed just above your left hip bone.
“What are you doing?” you asked.
“Does this hurt?” asked Will. You shook your head as he pressed just below your belly button. He moved his hands over once more, and you started to shake your head again as he pressed down on your right side. As he started to pull away, you gasped, feeling a sharp pain similar to the one you had felt in the bathroom earlier. It was significantly worse, and you threw your head back hard against the armrest as you tried to recoil from the cause of the pain. “When did the pain start? Any other symptoms you aren’t telling me? How long were you using the heating pad?”
“Geez, one question at a time! It hurt a little, like barely even noticeable, last night around midnight. I don’t think so. And I don’t know, not that long. Why?”
Will stood. “Because it’s not cramps, it's appendicitis. We’re going to Med. Right now.”
“No,” you argued. You hated hospitals even more than Jay.
Jay pulled his keys out of his pocket. “I’ll pull the truck around.”
Will nodded to Jay before turning back to you. “This isn’t debatable. Sorry, kiddo.” He handed his keys to Kelly and bent over to lift you off the couch.
You grabbed his arm to stop him. “I can walk at least.”
Will proceeded to pick you up. “We don’t have the time to wait for you to make it down to the truck.”
Kelly flipped off the television and unplugged your heating pad before following you and Will out of the apartment and locking the door.
Will set you in the backseat of Jay’s truck and then ran around to get into the passenger side next to you. Kelly handed Will his keys as Jay peeled out of the complex.
“Jay, turn on the radio or something. It’s too quiet in here,” you complained.
Kelly looked over his shoulder at you. “Can’t take a comfortable silence with the three of us?”
“What part of this is comfortable?”
“It’s fine. We are only going to be in the car for ten minutes,” said Jay.
“Please? Just turn on someth—” you froze mid-sentence.
“Are you okay? Is the pain worse?” Will asked.
“Um, no. It actually doesn’t hurt anymore.” You frowned in confusion. “Why doesn’t it hurt anymore?”
“Damn it,” Will muttered. “Jay, go faster.”
Sinking further into the seat as Jay floored the accelerator, you glanced between Will and Kelly. “What? Why go faster?” You couldn’t help but finally start to worry.
Will took your hand in his and squeezed reassuringly. “Because if it stopped hurting, there’s a good chance your appendix just ruptured.”
“But that’s bad, right? Like, really bad?” You took a sharp inhale as the realization hit. “Like, I could die from an infec—”
Will squeezed your hand harder to get your focus back on him. “No. You’re going to be just fine.”
“I’m so stupid. Why didn’t I say something? I lied earlier. I’ve never had nausea or puking with period cramps. I knew I should have said something before you even came over because the heating pad wasn’t helping. The heating pad always—”
“Y/N, breathe!” Will interrupted your rambling.
Kelly reached over and squeezed your knee, almost painfully, in an attempt to ground you.
“It’s okay,” Will reassured. “You’re going to be fine. You are right—untreated, it can be very dangerous, but we are almost to the hospital. Look at me.” Your eyes met his. “Just take a deep breath. You will be fine, you hear me?”
You nodded and tried to focus on your breathing rather than the panic swirling through your mind.
Less than two minutes later, Jay was pulling up to the ambulance entrance to the ED. You barely even had time to open your door before Jay was there gently lifting you out of the truck and heading inside.
Connor saw the four of you enter, you in Jay’s arms, and immediately moved to meet you. “Hey, what’s going on, guys?”
You threw your head back in annoyance. “You could have at least gotten a freaking wheelchair. This is just ridiculous.”
Kelly just chuckled as Jay scolded, “I thought you agreed to stop being difficult so Will would buy you dinner.”
Will ignored the three of you in favor of answering Connor. “I’m pretty sure she’s got a ruptured appy. Pain onset was around midnight. She tried to eat some soup about twenty minutes ago and vomited. Temp was at 102, and she had right-sided rebound tenderness. About five minutes ago, she said it stopped hurting.”
“Let’s get an ultrasound to confirm.” Connor turned around to find Maggie. “Maggie, where am I going?”
“Treatment 3. Monique, you’re with Dr. Rhodes.”
Jay set you on the bed, kissed your forehead, and then shifted by the foot of the bed. He placed his hand on your shin. “Just let me know if I’m in the way.”
“No, you're good there,” said Connor. “Monique, let’s run a CBC and a BMP.”
Will handed Connor the ultrasound probe as Monique wrapped the blood pressure cuff around your bicep. She clipped the pulse ox on your index finger. To distract yourself while she placed the IV, you focused on Jay and Kelly, who was hovering in the doorway.
“It’s definitely a ruptured appy,” Connor announced, handing the ultrasound back to Will. “Let’s get her up to the OR.”
The panic you’d been trying to suppress since the truck bubbled to the surface again, and you started to hyperventilate. Jay stepped forward to take your hand.
Connor gently squeezed the opposite shoulder. “Just take a deep breath, sweetheart. I know you hate the hospital but I need you to try to calm down.” He shifted away to grab an oxygen mask before placing it over your face.
Will reached around Connor to take your hand. “What did I tell you? You’re going to be fine. Surgery and some antibiotics, and you’ll be good as new in a few weeks.”
You managed to take a couple slow, deep breaths. Locking eyes with Connor, you asked, “Can— Are you doing the surgery?”
“Yep, I’m all yours.” He and Will pulled the gurney out of the room and towards the elevators.
When they pulled you off the elevator, Jay squeezed your hand once more before letting go. Kelly took his place, kissed your forehead and squeezed your shoulder.
Finally, Will placed a kiss on your knuckles. “We’ll see you on the other side.”
A moment later, Connor was pushing you into the operating room. He pulled the oxygen mask off and set it beside your head. “These nurses are going to get you settled. I have to go scrub in and then I’ll be right back, okay?”
You nodded. Connor turned to leave, but you stopped him. “Wait! I’m gonna be all loopy after, right? Like all those videos online?”
Connor cracked a smile. “Probably. It takes a bit for the anesthesia to clear your system, and you’ll get some pain meds.”
You scowled at that thought. “Okay. Do me a favor—don’t let those three see me while I’m still drugged and loopy. If they end up with something to tease me about, you are dead to me.”
Connor laughed. “Yes, ma’am.”
The next few minutes were a blur, and before you knew it, someone was asking you to count backwards.
As you started to wake, there was a new, different ache through your abdomen. You groaned and peeled your eyes open, meeting Connor’s bright blue irises.
“Welcome back. How’re you feeling?” he asked.
Scrunching your nose, you considered how to answer. “Hmm, a little sore. Sleepy. And cold. Can I go home soon?”
“How about we talk about that later?”
“Can I have a blanket?”
Connor gave you a sad smile. “Sorry. Not right now. You still have a fever.”
“Please?” you whined. Before he could answer, another thought hit you. “Hey, where‘re my brothers and Kelly?”
“You threatened me to not let them in here yet!” Connor huffed. “They will be waiting for you once we move you out of recovery.”
You vaguely remembered what you’d told Connor. “Oh, yeah.”
“It’s late. How about you try to get a little more sleep?” Connor suggested.
You gave him a lazy thumbs up before quickly falling back to sleep.
—————
Connor found Jay, Will, and Kelly in the waiting room. All three were scrolling through their phones. “Everything went perfectly. She is in recovery now, and a nurse will come get you when she’s back in a room.” Connor explained.
Will huffed. “Why can’t we go see her now? Or one of us at least?”
“Nope.” Connor shook his head. “She threatened me to not let you see her while she’s loopy. So, no. You’re waiting until she’s moved. It should only be about half an hour.”
“Come on. She probably won’t even remember anything she says.” Will argued.
“She wasn’t worried about what she’d remember. Seems to think her big brothers might tease her,” said Connor. “I promise, she’s fine. She was sleeping when I left a few minutes ago.”
—————
About an hour later, Jay, Will, and Kelly were sitting around your hospital room, waiting for you to wake up.
You jerked awake suddenly with a gasp. The sudden movement pulled on your stitches. “Shit. Ow.”
All three guys were beside you in an instant, your brothers on either side while Kelly took up the space at the foot of the bed.
“Are you okay?”
“Did you have a nightmare?”
“What hurts?”
In your half-awake state you weren’t even sure who had said what as they spoke over each other. You simply groaned in response.
“Can I check your incision?” Will asked. “Need to make sure you didn’t just pop a stitch.”
“Not like you’re going to take no for an answer,” you said. You pulled on the gown to get it out of his way. Due to the sleepiness or the pain meds, maybe both, you were slightly uncoordinated. He helped you pull the fabric aside so he could get access to your bandage.
Connor came into the room as soon as Will had pulled the gauze up. "I'm pretty sure that's my job."
“Sorry, she had a nightmare and jerked pretty hard when she woke up. I wanted to be sure.”
Connor checked the incision as well. “It looks good.” He turned his attention to you. “Scale of one to ten, how’s the pain?”
“Not bad. Maybe a three.”
Connor nodded. “When you need more pain meds, just use the call button or tell Will. I’m going to let you get some rest. I’ll be in to check on you in the morning.”
“Thanks, Connor.”
Jay, Will, and Kelly took turns shaking Connor’s hand as he headed out.
“Thanks, man,” said Will, following Connor to the door. “You here all night?”
Connor nodded. “Yeah, I’ll be in the ED.”
“Want to talk about it?” Jay asked as Will came back to your bedside.
“About what?”
“That nightmare,” Jay clarified.
“Oh. No, I don’t really remember most of it.” He looked like he didn’t believe you at all. You opted to change the subject before he could press. “Do I get to go home tomorrow?”
Will sighed, knowing you weren’t going to like his answer. “No. You’ll need IV antibiotics and monitoring for infection for at least a few days.”
“This sucks. What is the point of having a doctor for a brother? I want two fancy dinners.”
They all laughed.
“Sure. Next time you don’t feel well, are you going to just tell me up front?” Will asked.
“Eh, probably not.” You smirked. “But honestly, 9 times out of 10, it’s nothing.”
“Just continue to always tell me. I’ll loop them in if need be,” Kelly offered.
“‘If need be’?” You rolled your eyes. “You brought Jay over without even knowing anything!”
Kelly just shook his head. “I know you never leave work early. You had the stomach flu last year and didn’t even miss any work.”
“Well, clearly, you know me too well.”
“Clearly, it’s a good thing I do.”
“Alright, stop rubbing it in. You guys might as well go home and get some sleep,” you suggested despite not wanting to be alone.
“Nah, you’re stuck with us tonight,” Jay said.
Hoping your relief wasn’t obvious, you smiled. “You guys don’t have anything better to do than sit around and watch me sleep? Creepers.”
————
Five days later, you were signing discharge papers as Jay and Will argued about which one of them you should stay with.
“I have a guest room,” said Jay. “You want to make her sleep on a couch?”
“No, jackass,” Will countered. “She can sleep in the bed, and I’ll take the couch.”
“My place means no one is sleeping on a couch.”
“Guys!” you interrupted. “I’m going to my own apartment.”
Will sighed. “You shouldn’t be alone, at least for a few days.”
“My couch is open,” you shrugged. “Fight over that, take turns. I really don’t care. But I am going home to my own bed.”
“I’m off tonight,” said Jay. “I’ll stay.”
“I’m off, too. I can stay.”
“Quit arguing,” you groaned. “I love you both, and I appreciate that you both want to help me. But I will kick you both out and call Kelly instead.”
“Sorry,” they said in unison.
“We will figure out a schedule,” said Jay.
“Awesome. Now, will you guys, please, get me the hell out of here?”
Will grabbed the wheelchair a nurse had brought in earlier. “Gladly.”

Welcome home- Matt Casey x Darden!Sister
Authors note: Sorry that it’s been so long since I posted!!! It’s been a crazy few weeks and I honestly just haven’t had the motivation. This is a continuation to a story I wrote a while ago containing these two love birds.
Summary: Kelly and Stella finally bring you back home.
Warnings: NONE; possible spoilers maybe.
———————
You and Matt Casey kept your relationship going even through your move to Portland to be with your nephews, the Darden boys. When Matt had the weekend off, he would often fly over to Portland and help you out with whatever you needed. Sometimes, all you needed was him.
About three years later, Stella called you and told you about her engagement to Kelly. You were thrilled. You always knew that they would get married. You never knew Kelly to love someone and to be so devoted to them like he was to Stella Kidd. That woman had Kelly Severide wrapped around her finger.
When you got a call from Matt later on in the night, you were surprised to find that this FaceTime was filled with many familiar faces.
“Hey Darden!” Kelly yelled over Matt’s shoulder.
Clamoring could be heard as Jay Halstead, Mouch, Hermann, Sylvie, and a few others from intelligence and 51 tried to get in the frame to say hi. You giggled as you watched Kelly take Jay in a headlock and demand your attention. Everyone was clearly VERY drunk.
Matt chuckled as he watched the scene unfold on his end, but most of his attention was on you and your giggling self. He has never heard a sound more beautiful than your laugh or seen anything brighter than your smile.
Once Matt was able to break away, he stepped outside and sat at a picnic table far from the outdoor bar. He stared at you for a moment as you wrote something down, biting your lower lip in concentration. All he wanted in that moment was to rub the knots, that he knew were on your shoulders from stress, away and catch your bottom lip in his.
You noticed him staring after a minute or two and immediately blushed, hiding behind the sleeves of the hoodie Matt left you the last time he came out to Portland. “What?” You giggled, pushing your reading glasses up while you hid behind your hands.
Matt shook his head and chuckled. “Nothing. Nothing. You are just too damn adorable.” Matt smiled shyly at being caught, but he was also doing his best to hide what you were doing to him just by being you. “God. I miss you.” Matt breathed, leaning against the picnic table and setting his phone against the napkin dispenser to rub his hands together in an effort to warm them back up.
You smiled sweetly back at him. “I miss you too honey.” You whispered, flopping back into your pillows. “Sooooo, did Kelly ask you to be his best man?” You asked, wiggling your eyebrows.
Matt chuckled, missing your antics. “Of course he did! Who else would be able to deal with Groomzilla?!” Matt joked, causing you to burst out laughing.
“True. True.” You said, struggling to catch your breath. “Stella asked me to be a bridesmaid, but I don’t know what things will look like around the time of the wedding, so I had to decline.” You explained, pouting slightly.
Matt hummed. “Well, I’m sure it’ll all work out. We have time.”
You nodded in thought before flipping onto your side and settling in for the night. You placed your phone on its upright charging port as you stared at Matt. “If you can, leave me on. It’ll be like I’m part of the fun.” You whispered, hiding a yawn behind your sleeve.
Matt knew you wouldn’t last much longer, so he easily agreed, standing up and carrying his phone around as he re-entered the crowded bar filled with your family.
———————
The day was here. Stella and Kelly were finally getting married. As far as Matt knew, you had to stay in Portland because Ben got himself into some trouble. Matt was kinda thankful for you not being here in this moment as everything seemed to be falling apart and he just knew you would be frantically trying to fix everything if you were here.
“Hey guys! A party boat just opened up and we can have the wedding there!” Cruz yelled from halfway down the block.
The wedding party all went running, eager to get there and get everything arranged. Once they arrived, Matt was pleasantly surprised and confused with how nicely the boat was decorated in line with Kelly and Stella’s wedding theme. That was, until you popped up behind him.
“Hey handsome.” You whispered, wrapping your arms loosely around his waist.
He knew those hands and that voice anywhere. He immediately turned in your arms and lifted you into his own, twirling you around. “Oh my God!” Matt yelled, chuckling as he spun you around. Once he sat you down, he swooped in to kiss you deeply. He only pulled back when he was desperately in need of air. “Wha- how?!” Matt asked, still trying to understand how you were here.
“Welllll.” You drawled out, leaning back slightly to get a better look at him. “I was really busy moving my stuff back into your apartment while you were at Kelly’s last night. Stella held her bachelorette party there while we unpacked my stuff.” You smiled, proud to have pulled one over on him.
Matt gawked at you, absolutely speechless.
“Then, when I went to start decorating this morning, I realized that the church was double booked and had this set up. Everyone helped get you here. We figured you deserved some good news after the tough year you’ve had.” You explained, smiling as everyone around you agreed.
“Plus, this is like the best wedding gift EVER. THE BAND IS BACK TOGETHER!” Stella yelled, pumping her fist in the air.
Everyone chuckled and immediately agreed.
Matt wrapped his arms tighter around your waist, burying his face in your hair. After a few moments, Matt pulled back and kissed you on the forehead before shouting, “LETS GET KIDD AND SEVERIDE HITCHED!”
As everyone began to walk to their seats or to their places, Matt pulled you into his side and gave you one more kiss. “Welcome home baby.”
———————
At the reception, Matt has you sitting in his lap with his arms wrapped around you. “So, where are Griffin and Ben?” Matt asked, kissing the side of your head.
“So, here’s the thing.” You began, turning in his lap to look Matt in the eyes. “Griffin got accepted into Northwestern and Ben was okay with moving home with you, so I brought Ben with me and Griffin is staying on campus.” You explained, toying with your necklace as you spoke.
“Wait, so Ben is here?!” Matt asked, immediately ecstatic.
You chuckled, calming down now that the biggest secret was out. “Yeah. Griffin is at the apartment with him now. He will be staying for the night before going back to his dorm so that we can have the night out. He expects Uncle Matt’s famous eggs in a basket tomorrow morning.” You chuckle, shaking your head at the fact that Griffin remembered his favorite meal that Matt made him as a kid.
Matt beamed, kissing you on the temple. “He can have anything he wants.” Matt assured, smiling proudly at the fact that Griffin remembered things from their time together. For the first time since you left, Matt was finally content.

"What are you doing here? It isn't safe!"
With Chicago Fire?❤️
The silence of the derelict building had since been broken only by the moving of burnt furniture and blackened bits of ceiling as you cautiously picked your way through what had been the kitchen before five hours ago.
You bent over your target in the middle of the room and silence reigned once more. Then, naturally:
“Y/N? That you?”
Your refusal to turn at your brother’s voice—though you were so engrossed in whatever you were doing that it was possible you hadn’t even heard him—prompted both Matt and Kelly to exchange looks of confusion and slight concern. It wasn’t often they found Casey Jr. in beaten down houses, despite their job.
Glancing around the room, mentally mapping the likelihood of it caving in around them, Kelly took a few steps forward, Matt following behind. “Y/N, what’re you doing here?” he asked gently, though urgency reared its head all the same. “It isn’t safe.”
It was then that you stood, your mind set. “It’s arson.”
The men stopped. Casey dipped his head a little, an eyebrow raising. “What?”
You turned. The resolution was clear on your face, a determination to get your point, whatever it was, across. “It was arson,” you repeated.
There was a moment of processing. You were a young woman now, accepted into the fire academy and due to start your training as soon as your college exams were done, but you had been part of the firehouse and the institution as a whole your entire life. You’d grown up with Matt as your guardian and the members of 51 your multiple aunts and uncles. If anyone was going to have mountains of fire knowledge, it was the girl who’d been raised by firemen.
Though, if your words were anything to go by, it seemed your few visits to OFI headquarters with Kelly over the years had rubbed off on you the most.
The potential seriousness of the situation setting in, Kelly hurried his steps. “Show us,” he said.
You immediately knelt to the ground, resuming your previous position as Kelly shone his torch where you were pointing. You stretched your hand out and waved it over the ground. “Here. It looks like someone was trying to rub the trail from the ground but it’s obviously still there. It’s—looks like accelerant.” You pointed at a bar stool, its three remaining legs deformed and black. “That was pretty conveniently placed on top of it, too.” You shook your head and bit the inside of your cheek, staring at the dim line leading from the middle of the room towards the stove by the wall. You knew what you were seeing. It all added up.
Matt leant forward to peer closer, brows furrowing in concentration. “She’s not wrong,” he said eventually, brushing flakes of ash away from the trail to see the small grooves in the floorboards, careful not to ruin potential evidence. “See here...these scratch marks look purposeful. A nail?”
Kelly shook his head. “Could be anything.”
“Not much else to think otherwise.” Matt fixed his eyes back on you. “What else you got?”
You rose your fist to your mouth, your confidence momentarily slacking. “Just hunches,” you admitted, “but you’ve always taught me to trust those.” You sat back and glanced between the two. “The family said they didn’t know what happened, right? The wife was cooking, left it for a moment, and it just caught fire.”
“That’s what he said,” Casey said, referring to the husband.
“He. Right. He was wearing gloves when you brought him out. I saw. He wouldn’t take them off and he wouldn’t let the meds take them off. Said it was cold and he was fine, they should be paying more attention to his wife.” 51 had found over the years there were multiple benefits to your placement as Boden’s shadow. You saw things others didn’t; that was your job, after all. Stand back and observe. Watch how they worked. Learn from the best, so when the Academy finally called you up, you’d be the best.
The earlier fire hadn’t been overtly suspicious at all. Apart from the gloves, and the way the man had reacted, everything was pure gut feeling. The house hadn’t been far from the station so you’d walked there the moment you could, eager to quench the inkling that something wasn’t right. It’d often been joked at that you were a Severide clone, not just in your mannerisms, which was no surprise considering the lieutenant’s influential hand in raising you, but also your affinity for fire investigation. It certainly wasn’t the first time you’d aided the OFI, and it would undoubtedly not be your last.
Kelly stood to his feet and shone the torch throughout the rest of the room. “He was wearing gloves at the hospital,” he said.
“You saw him at the hospital?” you asked.
Matt rubbed his palm across his forehead and leant his arms on his knees. “We went to check on the wife. That’s why we’re here. To find some family photograph the guy ran back inside to find after overhaul. Don’t even know how he got there, honestly.” He hummed absently and gazed back at the trail. “I guess he could have come back to rub the trail out. Used the photograph as a ruse.”
Kelly turned back with a frown. “He did make a lot of effort telling us not to go outta our way to get it for him.”
“The gloves, Y/N,” Matt said. “You think his hands are burnt?”
“I do. I think he, or someone, set that fire.”
There was a bleak quietude for a moment, the eeriness of the wind passing through the open door and across the burnt ground the only noise to interrupt it. Kelly eventually heaved a sigh and pulled his beanie down over his ears.
“Alright,” he said, “let’s head back to OFI now, give them your findings. Try and open a case.” As you stood up, he put a hand on your shoulder, a knowing smile spreading across his lips. “This is good, you know. Really good.”
“Yeah.” Matt finished taking photos of the little evidence you had found before he wrapped an arm around you and pulled you against his side. “We’ll make a firefighter outta you yet.”
You smiled. “I learnt from the best.”

SEVERIDE!SISTER MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
The doorbell rang and you looked up from where you were setting the table. Lily swung her head back up at you and you smiled. “That must be Uncle Kelly and Aunt Stella. You want to get the door?” You asked your daughter.
The grin on Lily’s face said it all. “Can I?”
You usually didn’t let her answer the door alone even though your five year old had already huffed more than once that she was able to do “big girl stuff” but since you were expecting Kelly and Stella for family dinner you figured there was no harm.
You nodded with a smile and you heard her feet patter out towards the main door, interspersed with her excited yells of “Uncle Kelly!”
You smiled as you heard her reach the door and the click of the door opening. Until it was quiet. Too quiet.
“Lil?” You called, heading out of the kitchen and sticking your head out to check on her.
It wasn’t Kelly.
Instead, it was the last person you expected or wanted to see.
Was it anger you felt first? Surprise? Or disbelief? You didn’t know, and you didn’t care. You headed straight for your daughter, picking her up into your arms.
“Kris, what are you doing here?” Your voice was cold and Lily seemed to have picked that up as she turned to look at you.
“Sorry, Mom. I don’t talk to strangers.” Lily sounded genuinely upset because she thought you were angry with her.
You flashed her a small smile. “It’s okay, baby. Why don’t you go get your stuff ready? Remember, the stuff you wanted to show Aunt Stella?”
Lily shook her head, seeming to sense something wrong and instead rested her chin on your shoulder, turning her back to the stranger at the door.
You glanced back at Kris. He wasn’t just your ex, he was Lily’s biological father. Biological. That was where you drew the line, seeing as how Kris had walked out on you after finding out you were pregnant. Lily didn’t have any memories of him since he’d walked out before you’d even started showing. You’d been devastated but on hindsight, it might have been the best thing that Kris had ever done for you.
“We need to talk.”
You’d almost forgotten the sound of his voice, the gravelly quality of it hitting your ears and triggering a bunch of memories that made your body stiffen despite the effort you were making to not let it.
You stepped backwards, reaching out for the door so you could close it. “We have nothing to talk about.”
There was a dangerous glint in his eyes that you’d seen before. “I think you’ve forgotten…”
“Forgotten what?”
You breathed a sigh of relief before you’d even looked up at your brother who was now striding towards you, pushing you gently into the house as he slid between you and Kris.
“Lily, didn’t you say you wanted to show me something?” Lily raised her head now to give Stella a smile. Stella nodded at you and you smiled back gratefully, allowing her to pick Lily from your arms and bring her inside.
Kris hadn’t said anything, but Kelly wasn’t waiting around for it. “Don’t you come around here again. You stay away from them.”
Kelly turned towards you, pushing you gently further into the house, closing the door right in Kris’ face.
“You okay?” Kelly turned to you.
You nodded and smiled. “Always great to have my older brother around.”
Kelly smiled back, pulling a comforting arm around your shoulders and pressing a kiss to the top of your head, only interrupted with Lily’s excited squeal of “Uncle Kelly!” as she actually spotted him now.
You spent the rest of the night without sparing Kris another thought, surrounded by Kelly, Stella and your daughter. Lily didn’t seem to have been fazed by the encounter, so you were thankful that she didn’t know him. You didn’t know if or even how you would handle a heartbroken five year old if she’d been old enough to understand her father not wanting anything to do with her.
Stella slid a glass over to you as she sat next to you. “Everything okay?”
You glanced up at her before looking over at Kelly who was giving Lily the ride of her life on his back in the middle of the living room now and you smiled. “Thanks to the both of you.”
Stella smiled, leaning over to give you a hug.
Tumblr media
You glanced at your watch. It had been a long shift and not exactly a good one so you were dying to just go get Lily who, on the contrary, was probably having the time of her life at the Herrmann household.
Herrmann and Cindy had been a godsend. It didn't help that you and Kelly were on the same shift but despite the hours you held as a firefighter on Truck 81, you tried not to put them out too much. When Herrmann had caught whiff of your thoughts, however, Cindy had marched right on over and stomped that nonsense out of you, assuring you that the kids loved having little Lily around and that family was family.
“Y/N!” The voice was coarse, like someone who was coming to pick a fight.
You frowned as you saw Kris striding up towards the firehouse, heading straight for you.
You glanced behind you, where Gallo and Ritter were walking out, their bags slung over their shoulders. Gallo frowned and you gave him a look, which he knew all too well after working with you for some time.
Ritter nodded at him, staying outside but hanging a little behind as Gallo turned back to the firehouse once again.
You took a breath and headed further out to meet him, muttering to yourself that you were going to kill Kelly for delaying you. “What the hell, Kris?”
“We didn’t finish the talk.”
You rolled your eyes. “And I told you there’s nothing to talk about.”
Kris reached out to grab your arm. “And I told you there is.” The words slid out from his lips and you could hear him gritting his teeth, which was not a good sign.
You narrowed your eyes at him. “What do you want?”
“I need some money to tide me over.”
Your jaw fell open before you snapped it shut again. “You’re kidding.”
“Never been so goddamned serious in my life, Y/N. I know you do that stupid reserve fund shit, so just get me some and I’ll be on my way.”
“Or what?” You challenged.
“You know I could make your life a living hell.” Kris growled.
It was like he flipped a switch, as you felt anger fill your belly once again. “You should just be glad I didn’t ask you for child support. Walk away.”
“I’m not going anywhere until I get what I came from. Do not test me, Y/N.” He lowered his voice again.
“I’m not afraid of you, Kris. Not anymore.” You snapped.
It was a snap second, you’d stepped backwards to put more distance between the two of you, before you felt the impact of his palm striking your cheek. You stumbled backwards with the force as the old emotions roared to the surface again.
You didn’t have much time to react though as Matt’s voice rang out from behind you. “Hey!”
“You son of a bitch!” Kelly was here, too.
You spun around, throwing yourself at your brother to stop him from literally pouncing on Kris and probably beating him to death.
“I warned you about showing your face anywhere around us again.” Kelly yelled, the anger pulsating in his voice with each word.
Anyone who hadn’t left the firehouse was now being brought out by the commotion and soon Kris was facing a wall of firefighters. Your family.
“And what are you going to do about it?” Kris growled at Kelly, and you knew full well he was goading Kelly into delivering the first punch.
“Kelly, don’t.” You whispered, just as another voice interrupted the commotion.
“For starters, we can arrest your sorry ass.”
You glanced up just as Adam flashed his badge.
“Adam?”
Adam just gave you a discreet nod, continuing to direct his words at Kris. “What’s it going to be, big guy?”
You didn’t like how well you could see through the changing expressions on Kris’ face. The only good thing about it was knowing the moment that Kris knew he was cornered and didn’t have much of a choice.
Kris gave you one last look but Adam took another step forward. “Continue down this line of harassment, I’ll arrest you myself.”
As Kris turned and left, you marveled at how this was probably the first time in his life that Kris looked like he was leaving with his tail between his legs.
You glanced back at Adam now that you knew you didn't need to physically hold Kelly back any longer.
Adam smiled. “You okay?”
You nodded as Adam explained that he’d been in Chief Boden’s office with Kelly talking about a suspected arson case when Gallo had interrupted them to tell them you’d been approached by some guy in the front and it looked urgent.
“If he bothers you again, or even if you see him hanging around, you call me. Anything, anytime, Y/N.” Adam said, tapping your shoulder gently and reassuringly.
“Or I could kill him and solve everyone’s problems.” Kelly growled through his gritted teeth.
You smiled, turning towards him. “Settle down. I was holding you back for you, in case you missed the point. Lily doesn’t need the only male positive influence in her life to be thrown in jail for assault.”
“Ouch.” You glanced at Matt, who was looking at you with a smile teasing the corner of his lips.
You let out a chuckle. “I take it back. I take it back. You know she loves her Uncle Matt too." You paused, glancing around at your family again. "Thanks guys.”
You looked back around, smiling at the people that had yours and your brother’s back, as Kelly leaned forward to peer at your cheek where he’d struck you. “Are you sure…”
You rolled your eyes at your brother. “I’ve had worse. Come on, you promised Lily ice cream after shift. And we need to make sure she hasn’t torn Herrmann’s house apart.”
Herrmann let out a small laugh. “Next to Anabelle at that age? Lily’s a model kid.”
You laughed, falling into step next to Kelly and Stella as you headed towards Kelly’s car. “Kel. Thanks.”
Kelly frowned at you. “What?”
“Everything. Being here for me and Lil, for being protective even though you drive me crazy when you treat me like a ten year old.” You smiled, teasing him gently before you continued. “He said he’d make our lives a living hell and I just…”
“Fat chance. Not while I’m around.” Kelly assured you, ruffling your hair gently.
You smiled.
“Come on, let’s go get Lil. I’ll even buy you an ice cream.” Kelly teased.
You rolled your eyes as you climbed into the back seat, Stella shooting you a smile from where she was already seated up front. “Shut up.” You growled playfully back at your brother.

Men Suck
Characters: Kelly Severide x Sibling!Reader
Warnings: Abusive/toxic relationship, injuries, blood, hospital treatment.
Summary: Kelly finds out he should've trusted his gut.
A/N: This is kinda new for me, my first time writing a sibling fic for Kelly. Hope it's okay!
*****
Naturally, whenever you brought a boy home, Kelly played his role as your big brother a little too well, always presenting himself as all macho and scary so boys would back off and never talk to you again.
But Jacob, he was different.
The first time you formally introduced Kelly and Jacob was one night at Molly's. You just finished your shift and Kelly invited you for a free drink, something about not seeing you for weeks now due to firehouse drama.
Kelly like usual was ice cold towards the man and he had a very good reason. The moment he noticed you walking into the bar, the man close behind you, he knew something about him was off.
Maybe it was the way he carried himself, his face permanently looking smug and the callouses, old scars and healing skin on his hands sent immediate alarms.
Of course, in the beginning you were as careful as could be but then a month went, then six and then a year and you and Jacob were still together and dating. But, it was seven months in when everything starting to unfold.
Your shift ran over one night and the ED was understaffed and Maggie said she needed all the nurses she could have, so she asked and without a second thought you accepted, helping through the rush of the multi-vehicle car accident.
You were completely shattered, wanting nothing more than a hot bath and to go to bed, falling into the arms of your boyfriend. Alas, it wasn't that simple.
The veins in his neck were sticking out, his knuckles white from the grip on the bottle of beer yet his face was completely straight, too straight.
No matter how valid your excuses were, he just kept going and long before you knew it, your body went limp into his arms so you wouldn't hit the floor, alerting whoever lived downstairs.
From then on, you made sure to tread very carefully every time you set foot into your shared apartment. You constantly made sure that you were home before it got too late no matter what you were doing.
Eventually, people at work started to realise you weren't being you. Suddenly, you were jittering and flinched at the smallest thing, something you never used to do. You used to be the opposite, nothing scaring you because of the tolerance you built up as a child.
Everyone in the ED was so concerned that they even looped in Dr Charles and Ms Goodwin, the psychiatrist already noticing your unusual behaviour before he was told by your concerned colleagues.
You brushed off all of their concerns, saying you were completely fine and everything was great.
Then, someone snitched. You couldn't confirm who it was but anyone who knew Kelly, which was basically the entire staff, called him and spilled the beans.
From then on, Kelly was always in your ear, constantly asking if you were okay, if you wanted to hang out with him, if you wanted to have dinner and stay the night but you always made excuses. It wasn't like Jacob would let you spend the evening with your brother anyways.
All you wanted was for this nightmare to be over and for it all to go back to normal.
*****
Last night was the worst it's ever been. You lost track of time and when you eventually came to, you felt like the reincarnation of death.
You had been left to bleed out on the floor, still dressed in the clothes you wore when you left work, your shoes still on your feet.
Groaning, mustering up all the energy you had, you pushed yourself up and tried to stay silent, trying to hear if Jacob was home but from the corner of your eyes, you could just about make out the empty shoe rack.
He literally left you to die.
Still disorientated, wincing when your body pulsated in several places, you started cursing yourself out. Why did you let it get so far? You should've left him before the second date when Kelly expressed his hatred for the man.
Your eyes dragged across the room, trying to look for anything you could use to help your situation. Still sitting on the wooden floor, you propped yourself against the armrest of the sofa so you were upright. Taking the tissue box from the coffee table, you used as much as you could before the box was empty, holding the white squares against the parts of you that were bleeding.
But, you ran out and you were still bleeding. Before long, you'd pass out against from blood loss and if no one found you, these were going to be your last moments before dying.
This was the only time you were going to be thankful for Jacob. For some reason, he had the home phone on the table besides the sofa which meant that right behind you, within your reach was a phone.
Stretching backwards, you cried out, your fingers violently shaking as you struggled to grip the phone but you were relentless, grabbing the object with all the might you had left.
Pressing in the numbers of your brothers number, you tried to keep your breathing steady as the phone started ringing. As time went on, everything got more blurry, everything hurt more and the more you wanted to close your eyes and take a quick nap.
Snapping out of your reverie, you inhaled sharply at the voice that suddenly spoke, coming from the phone laying in your grasp.
"Severide." You felt tears fall down your cheeks, your sobs echoing, causing your chest to be in immense pain as your body shook.
"Kelly." You breathed out. Just hearing his voice brought you peace and all of a sudden, everything was perfect and you could go now.
"Y/N?" Kelly said in alarm, not recognising the number on his phone but he knew that voice, not liking how you sounded though. Your cries were loud and clear through the phone and it made his heart clench. "What's wrong? Are you okay?"
His questions brought the common room to a standstill. Everyone was eating brunch, having missed breakfast because of a call. All their eyes watched Kelly who was frozen in his seat, his phone to his ear.
"It was- Jacob's gone." You breathed out, trying to swallow back your tears so you could tell Kelly everything. "He- I'm hurt Kelly."
That was all Kelly needed to hear to know that Jacob did something, he hurt you. Kelly swore he never saw as much red as he did right now. To know that that scumbag lay a finger on you and he inflicted pain onto you, Jacob would be six feet under the next time next time Kelly saw him.
"Okay, I'm on my way Y/N." Kelly said, letting everyone in the room know that they needed to go. It didn't matter if it wasn't an official call because Kelly's little sister needed help and that was the only explanation needed.
*****
Driving at record speed, Kelly ran past the elevator and went up the stairs, going straight to the floor the apartment you shared with Jacob was. On the drive over, you stopped talking to Kelly and all he could think of was the worst.
Courtesy of Jacob, Kelly was denied a key to your place meaning that he had to kick in the door, kicking it repeatedly with his boot till it fell off its hinges.
Despite being unfamiliar with the layout of the apartment, Kelly ran in and felt his heart drop when his eyes found you unconscious up against the sofa.
Dropping to his knees, water building up behind his eyes, Kelly gently placed his fingers on your neck, waiting with bated breath for a pulse; letting out a sigh of relief when it was weak but it was there nonetheless.
"Y/N. Hey, open those eyes for me." Kelly whispered, pushing your hair from sticking on your forehead to behind your ears. He let his eyes scan your body, his own aching upon finding you littered in wounds, bruises and scars, some of which will permanently scar your skin.
Your groan was just about audible, Kelly's head snapping towards your head. A smile graced his lips when your eyelids fluttered, you were waking up.
"Hey, keep those pretty eyes open for me." Kelly begged you, your hand in his when Sylvie and Gabby finally entered the apartment. And your hand would stay with his until he was forced away by your colleagues at Med when you were taken to surgery.
*****
Your senses slowly came back, one by one. You easily recognised the smell, the sounds and the material of the blanket sitting on your lap and the bed you lay on.
Swallowing back a groan, you felt the needles poking in your skin. Peeling your eyes open, you blinked away any tiredness and scanned the room.
The room was dimly lit, the lights turned down so no ones sleep was going to be disturbed. Trying to move your fingers, one hand was connected to a bunch of needles and monitors while the other was being clutched in a warm hand.
Following the hand, your smiled at the salt and pepper hair. Kelly's head resting on your bed and he finally slept after god knows how long. He was still dressed in his uniform letting you know he hadn't moved an inch since your arrival.
"Kelly." You whispered, poking his cheek. "Wake up."
With a few more pokes, becoming more forceful as you went on, Kelly sat up in alarm, his eyes wide in confusion. "What, what's wro-" He cut himself off, you being the first thing he looked out.
You could physically see Kelly relax, letting out the biggest sigh of relief to see you awake and talking, way more alert than you were before.
"Gosh kid, you scared me." Kelly said, pressing a kiss to your forehead. All he wanted to do was wrap you up, keep you to himself and never let you go. His job as your older brother was to protect you and he failed.
"Men suck." You said with a slight smile, looking into Kelly's eyes that were identical to yours. "I should've listened to you."
"Don't blame yourself." Kelly shook his head, wanting you to know that you were definitely not to blame. "I should've been more annoying. Should've forced Jacob out and as far away from you."
"Don't blame yourself." You mocked Kelly, scoffing when he started to blame himself, guilt eating him up so much he was nearly drowning.
"Thank you Kelly." Your smile brightened, loving the comfort he brought he with small gestures like he was now, his thumb rubbing against the back of your hand like he used to when you were a kid struggling to sleep.
"No problem kid." Kelly smirked when you frowned, hating that he still called you that even though you were a fully grown, functioning and full time working adult.
"Anything for you."

Hey honey ♡ is it okay if I ask for an imagine with Kelly Severide in which the reader is Kelly's younger sister, who recently graduated from medicine and who decided to serve the country in the war as a combat medic. When she tells her brother the news, he isn't very happy, which ends up causing a small fight between them, but in the end Shay convinces Kelly to let the reader go.
Kelly Severide- Stay Safe
Tumblr media
YN Severide just graduated Med school. Of course her older brother Kelly was extremely proud of her, he was the loudest person at her graduation. After graduating YN started thinking about becoming a combat medic. After talking to Jay Halstead she applied and got the job. Now it’s time to tell her brother she’s leaving in a few weeks time.
Nervously YN places a plate down in front of Kelly after inviting him over to hers for dinner. Tonight is the night she’s going to tell her brother than she’s leaving
“This looks amazing YN. Thank you. So what did you want to talk about?”
“Maybe we should eat first”
“Why? Your not pregnant are you? Because if you are I’ll fucking kill….”
“I’m not pregnant” YN chuckles and Kelly breathes out a sigh of relief. YN’s laugh come to a halt as she takes a bite of food
“So what is it then?”
“Eat your food first”
“YN your worrying me. Just tell me. Are you sick?”
“No. Ok…. Erm….. please don’t shout”
“What have you done?” Kelly’s voice raises making YN more nervous
“I’ve been accepted to work as a combat medic” YN says quickly
“You what!” Kelly stands up yelling
“Kel…”
“Are you an idiot? Your gonna get yourself killed! I’m not gonna sit and watch you die”
“Kelly I know your upset but….”
“Upset? Upset? I’m furious” Kelly moves to the front door
“Don’t go. You haven’t finished your dinner”
“Suddenly I’ve lost my appetite” with that Kelly leaves YNs apartment, slamming the door behind him.
“Can you believe her shay? It’s like she wants to kill herself”
“Ok your just being dramatic now” Shay scolds her best friend the following day “she’s a grown woman who can do whatever she wants. I know your worried for her but you have to trust that she knows what she’s doing”
“What if she gets hurt though? What if she…” Kelly shakes his head not wanting to think about his little sister possibly dying
“Then we would cross that bridge if that ever happened, but she’s going to be a medic. She’s not fighting”
“But she’s still going to be on the field. Bombs could go off. She could get shot”
“She’s not going to be alone. No matter your feelings I think YN will be going and do you really want her leaving while your arguing?”
“I don’t want her going full stop” Kelly folds his arms in a huff
“I know, but you having a paddy isn’t going to stop her. I suggest you suck it up and go see her. Let you her know you support her. So when she comes home, which she will, then your relationship with her won’t be strained” this causes Kelly to groan. She knows Shays right, but that doesn’t mean he likes it.
That evening Kelly arrives at YNs apartment
“What are you doing here? If your coming for another argument I’m not in the mood” YN sighs turning around, leaving the front door open
“I’m not here to argue” Kelly says walking in “I’m here to apologise to you” YN raises her eyebrows not expecting this at all “I spoke to Shay earlier and she knocked some sense into me. Look I can’t pretend I’m not worried for you or scared, but Shay was right. Your an adult now, I can’t tell you what to do. Just promise me you’ll stay safe. I don’t want a phone call telling me you’re hurt”
“I promise I’ll be as safe as I can” Kelly pulls his little sister in for a hug “I’m going to miss you”
“I’ll miss you too”

“You know my brother’s gonna flip, right?” Wil said as he entered the hospital room seeing Y/n there wasn’t to much of an unusual sight. But she was there a lot less often then his own brother. He knew Jay would flip out once he heard she was here for any reason. So would her brother.
“Yeah, so is mine.” Y/n let out an unamused laugh.
“Your gonna have 2 men to deal with. Sucks to be you.” Will smirked teasing her.
“Jackass.” she responded and they both broke out into laughter. It was nice to be good friends with her boyfriend's brother. The two ended up getting to joke around a bit longer before the door to the room opened. Upon seeing who had opened the door, Will took that as his queue to leave.
“What were you thinking?!” Jay yelled as he entered the room, Kelly following not far behind.
“I’m guessing you told him what happened?” Y/n asked tilting her head to the side looking at her brother.
Kelly shrugged his shoulders. “He was gonna find out sooner or later.”
“Why would you risk your life like that?” Jay scolded her crossing his arms over his chest.
“Hey-” Kelly raised his voice cutting Jay off before he could scold his sister anymore for doing her job. “As much as I hate it to Halstead. She saved a young girl’s life, and your one to talk about life risking stuff.”
It was silent for a few minutes but Jay did stop. He couldn’t argue he got hurt way more than Y/n did. She did save a life.
“Hey Kelly, can you give us a minute?” Y/n aksed licking her dry lips.
“Yeah, Y/n/n.” Kelly nodded, he understood there was a conversation that needed to be had between the couple. “I’ll go get you a drink, okay?”
“Hmmmhmmm, thanks.” Y/n smiled gratefully to her brother.
“y/n-” Jay went to start after Kelly left the room but Y/n cut him off.
“No, Jay. I watch you get shot and beat up all the time. More than I and I’m sure Will would like. This.” Y/n gestured with her hands across her body. “This is nothing. Hell, I even get to be discharged tonight and back to work next shift.”
Jay listened till she was done. He knew he overreacted but it scared him that he could have lost her in the blink of an eye. “I know, I know. I just don’t like seeing you hurt.”
“I don’t like seeing you hurt but that’s practically a weekly thing.” Y/n stated, she understood Jay’s feelings completely. But it doesn’t change the facts. They have dangerous jobs getting hurt happens. Y/n let out a sigh looking down at her hands in her lap as Jay moved to sit in the chair next to her hospital bed. “I saved a young girl's life. I don’t regret it. I know you love what you do and I support it but…”
“I can’t be a Hippocratic?” Jay finished smiling at her.
“No offense.” Y/n dropped her head to the side smiling back at him.
“None taken.” he shook his head, dismissing the form of apologies. “I’m sorry I got mad at you. I just worry about you.”
Y/n reached out, grabbing his hand and intertwining their fingers together. “An I appreciate it. But we both have dangerous jobs. I promise if it was something serious-”
Jay nodded in understanding. “I know. Me too.”
“Is it safe?”Kelly asked as he popped his head through the door after opening it. He could tell by the lifted mood in the room that they had worked out their little issue.
“Yeah, it’s safe. You know Kel I find it off-ly convent that you decide to happily fill in Jay when I happen to be hurt.” Y/n smirked at her older brother.
“More people to watch over you the better.” Kelly shrugged his shoulder smiling guiltily. Jay couldn’t agree with the lieutenant more.

Why would i lie to you?
AUTHORS NOTE: I started hating this like halfway through and I just kept going? but I hate this so if y'all do too I couldn't even blame you. This was supposed to be a request but I don't even like this enough to say it is.
synopsis: You and Gallo are targeted after accidentally coming across something you shouldn't.
warnings: some VERY bad writing, canon-typical violence, mention of kidnapping, head injury, very bad medical understanding, kind of meh ending
Tumblr media
Working in CFD meant every shift had the potential to be crazier than the last. You were always expecting something crazy to happen that would spin the entire day into chaos.
The last thing you were expecting on a seemingly random Tuesday was to walk straight into a drug den. You and Gallo were ordered to clear the house next door and ensure no sparks would ignite the abandoned building. You both had to pry the door open, making your way through the front room to check the side for any signs of smoke. As soon as you made it through the front room you were greeted by the sight of enough fentanyl and cocaine to kill the entire house.
You quickly stopped Gallo from barreling in after you, aware of all of the powders around the room.
"Is that...?"
"Yeah," You whispered, hands shaking as you radioed Kidd.
"Hey Lieutenant, do you copy?"
"I Copy, what's up Halstead?"
"We're gonna need CPD and decontamination down here," You replied, "I think we just found a trap house."
There was a pause, you and Gallo looked at each other nervously. You could hear Severiade ordering what you asked for, no doubt also radioing Boden.
"Are you and Gallo okay?" Kidd finally said.
"Yeah," Gallo nodded, "We're good, Lieutenant."
"Gallo," You caught his attention, pointing out the powder on both of your turnout gear, "We need to get out of here."
Gallo nodded, clearly trying not to breathe too deep like you were.
"Lieutenant, we have an unknown substance on our turnouts," You informed, "We need might need Brett and Violet standing by, from the looks of this set-up, I think it's Fentanyl."
"Okay, Copy that," Stella rattled off what she wanted you two to do. She ordered you both to leave the house, following Cruz and Severiade to the hasty decontamination that had been set up. Cruz had all but said that it was CFD policy and you two would be fine, but everyone was still on edge. You and Gallo had to strip down to your underwear, washing any exposed skin that wasn't covered by your turnouts.
"Hey," Kidd entered the tent as you and Gallo wrapped yourselves in Towels, "CPD just confirmed it was fentanyl in that room. They're calling in intelligence."
You and Gallo shared a look.
"Well, do we get to have some real clothes? Or do we have to wait around in towels?" You finally asked.
Kidd shook her head, "Protocol says we have to take you two to Med to get checked out-" You and Gallo groaned "-I'll bring you some clothes there."
"We really have to go to Med?" Gallo pressed, both of you trailing behind Stella as she headed for 61.
She scoffed, "Uh yeah. Now get in."
Violet chuckled from inside the rig, pointing at the two spots next to her, "One of you get the gurney."
"Not me," You snapped, playfully jabbing at Gallo before climbing to sit next to Violet. Gallo grumbled about it being unfair, but climbed into the rig and sat on the gurney anyway.
When you walked into Med, they were already waiting for you. Maggie and Will stood at the ambulance entrance with stupid grins when they saw your frustrated pout.
"You always find trouble?" Will joked, gesturing for you to sit on the edge of the bed in Bay 3.
"I just thought I'd come to see you," You told your brother, giving him a massive fake smile.
Will rolled his eyes as he ran through his checks, "How do you even accidentally find a drug den?"
"Yeah, I'd like to know that too."
You and Will looked over to see Jay leaning in the doorway, an amused smile on his face.
"We hadn't caught up in weeks, so I thought Halstead Reunion, ya know?" You replied, laughing as Jay tried to ruffle your wet hair.
"You look like a drowned rat," he laughed, wiping his hand on the towel around your shoulders like it was disgusting.
"Wow, that's the thanks I get for doing your job for you?" You retorted.
"Settle down, Children," Will waved Jay away when he started getting in the way.
You had to sit for almost an hour waiting for Med to go through the checks. When they were done, Kidd gave you CFD sweats to change into. When you were sufficiently dressed to look like a cadet, you joined Kidd and Boden to see what CPD wanted you to do.
Gallo looked a lot better than you did, his hair had at least dried and the sweats were his size. You, on the other hand, did in fact look like a drowned rat. The sweats Kidd had given you were much too big. You had to tie the sweatpants to keep them sitting comfortably. Both you and Gallo had Truck 51 shirts on, the goat emblem on the chest making you look like candidates.
Will had given you a towel, helping you dry your hair while you waited. You looked less rat-like but still felt extremely uncomfortable. Will had jokingly said at least you weren't overdosing on narcotics and immediately apologized when you gave him a shocked frown.
"Alright," Jay said as he and Hailey walked up to your little gathered group, "We need you two to come down to the district with us, and go over what you saw one last time on record."
"Alright, then," Boden nodded, giving you and Gallo his 'please behave' look he reserved especially for the two of you. "Keep me updated."
"Will do, Chief," Jay replied, letting Hailey lead the way back to their car.
As you were walking back to the car you started giving Jay shit, "So, do we get badges now? Seeming we found you your case?"
Jay scoffed, "Yeah sure."
He opened the back door for you to get in, smiling smugly. He definitely got too much amusement out of putting you into the back of his car.
You narrowed your eyes at him, "Don't smile at me like that, Chuckles."
Hailey laughed, looking back at the two of you from the passenger seat.
When you were done at the Precinct, Boden had called and informed you and Gallo were off for the rest of the shift. Jay offered to give you a ride home, all but demanding it. As you were headed back to your apartment, you asked him about the case. He waved you off with a lie about it probably being something gang-related and an easy case. You didn't really care enough to press him any further. You had learnt a while ago that pressing Jay for information about the job wasn't worth it - he tried to hide most of the danger from you. At some point, you got so used to it that you always assumed whenever he was quiet it was worth just not asking anything more.
Eventually, he even stopped pressing you about the dangers of your job, it was a weird unspoken recognition between you and him. Not to ask too much.
When you jumped out of the car you wished Jay luck in the case, wanting nothing more than to go home and wash the day away. You were leaving the shower when your phone lit up. Clearly, Gallo had the same thought as you, what an awful way to spend the rest of an on-shift day.
Want to grab a drink?
You laughed, responding; only if you bring it here cbf going out.
Gallo let you know he would be at your apartment soon, no doubt bringing enough beer for you two to drown your sorrows about being benched.
Gallo arrived with a six-pack, putting them in the fridge and bringing two over for you both. He sat next to you on the couch, both of you silently watching the game and just trying to decompress from the day.
"I hate this," You finally muttered, sick of sitting doing nothing while your friends were at work.
"Me too," Gallo replied, looking as forlorn as you felt. After another moment of silence Gallo said, "When I was coming here, it was so weird, I could have sworn someone was following me."
You laughed, "Following you?"
Gallo turned to face you, looking extremely serious, "Yeah, following me. This black ford was behind me up to the store, I thought it was nothing but when I headed here it was two cars behind me, again."
You mirrored Gallo, turning to face him as he spoke. Any sense of drowsy self-pity had vanished and now you were growing concerned, "It followed you all the way here?"
Gallo shook his head, "No. It pulled off a couple of blocks before me, I figured it must have been someone taking the same route, but..."
"But?"
"it just felt strange," Gallo confessed.
You put your almost untouched beer on the coffee table, walking around the couch to grab your phone off the kitchen counter where I was charging.
"What are you doing?" Gallo asked, frowning at you, "You think it really was following me?"
"I don't know," You told him, "But I'd feel a hell of a lot better if Jay came and told us for sure."
You searched through your phone for Jay's name, quickly calling him and walking back to Gallo. As you heard it start to dial, you heard the unmistakable sound of a car screeching to a halt.
"Tell Jay what's going on," You ordered Gallo, shoving your phone at him for him to take. As Gallo rambled off what was going on to Jay, you slowly approached the windows. You pressed to the side of the window, trying to not be seen by anyone outside. You gently parted the curtains, glancing through the gap to see four armed men getting out of a black crossover.
You ducked away from the windows quickly, grabbing Gallo's arm and yanking him along with you to your ensuite. He handed the phone to you with a breathy, "Jay wants to talk to you."
You nodded, grabbing the phone off him, then pushing him into the bathroom, "Stay in here, get low and lock the door."
Gallo protested, "What about you?"
"I'll be fine, just do as I say," You snapped back shutting the door quickly and as quietly as you could.
"-Y/N? What's going on? Y/n!"
You held your phone to your ear with your shoulder, making your way back out of your bedroom and into the lounge to get a vantage point on the car in your street.
"Jay, there are four armed men outside," You weren't sure why you were whispering, the men hadn't even approached the windows so they wouldn't be able to hear you.
"Patrol is 5 minutes out, we're not far behind, okay?" Came jays response.
"Okay," You whispered. You ducked around your couch, using the furniture to hide your figure as you tried to look for a license plate on the car.
"Shit!" You cursed, barely having time to press yourself flush to the ground before three of the men unloaded their magazines into the front of your apartment.
"Y/N?" You could hear Jay's concerned voice coming from your phone, but it had skidded out of sight when you hit the ground.
The rain of bullets left your ears ringing, all around you were shrapnel of your apartment. Tiny fragments of glass mixed with the ripped-up wood of the floors, essentially creating one hell of a scene.
You dared raise yourself off the ground, getting to your hands and knees and psyching yourself up to crawl to the kitchen to hide behind the counter. The ringing in your ears subsided briefly for you to hear the crunching of footsteps approaching. The footsteps belonged to a pair of dark military-style boots. Before you could think too much about the fact, one of the boots came down on your back, kicking you to the floor and winding you.
You let out a puff of air at the force, gaping and hiccuping trying to regain your breath. The pair of boots were joined by another and you were hauled to your feet.
"Where is it?"
Both of the men were dressed in military-style tactical gear, all black aside from their vests which were camo. Their faces were covered by goggles and balaclavas. It was no doubt meant to be intimidating, but all you could think was what the fuck did they want with you.
"I don't enjoy repeating myself, where is it?" The man on your left snarled, he had a tight grip on your arms while the man on your right loosely trained his rifle on you.
You didn't know what to say, this was all so absurd. Instead of replying to the man you just laughed, a laugh of shock and surprise. The two men looked at each other, and then one of them punched you straight in the stomach.
"Jesus Christ," You swore, doubling over and struggling not to empty your stomach on their boots, "I don't know what you're talking about, okay?"
The sound of police sirens and the bright flashing lights were surrounding you at once. You could hear the patrol cops shouting orders at the men outside your apartment, then the repeated sound of gunfire.
"Last chance," He warned, "Tell us where it is, or we'll kill you."
You almost screamed when the man's chest exploded, his blood spraying over your face and chest. At least you were expecting it when the second man went down too.
"Chicago PD!"
In your line of work, you had been covered in other people's blood more times than you cared to count - but this was different. As you stood shell-shocked, a swarm of officers filled the room. The ringing in your ears grew and grew, all you could do was stare at your shaking hands that were covered in the men's blood.
Someone was grabbing your arm, pulling you towards the door and away from the bodies. Your legs shook so badly that had to support you as you walked. Your vision was blurring from tears that clung to your lashes, every step you took felt like you were slowly sinking into the pavement. You were led through the sea of CPD to an ambulance then gently sat on the back step. You could hear the rustle of action going on around you now, but the blood rushing in your ears drowned most of it out.
Someone was gently taking your face in their hands, guiding you to look up at them. Hailey smiled down at you, slowly talking you through the wave of panic that held you. She wrapped a thick blanket around your shoulders, tucking it under your chin as you sat immobile. Hailey sat down next to you, grasping your hand tightly in hers and rubbing a soothing hand up and down your back.
"Just breathe, you're safe," She kept saying, whispering it quietly into your ear as she soothed your hair away from your face.
Once you finally felt like the world had stopped shaking and the ringing in your ears subsided you realized what was really going on.
You let out a small sigh, turning to Hailey with wide eyes. You wanted to ask what the hell had just happened, to swear and shake the anxiety out of you. Instead, you just looked at her, distraught.
Hailey knew what you were trying to say. She smiled softly, her tone was so soft it almost made you feel warm and safe, "Don't worry about that right now. What matters is that you're okay."
You nodded, letting her pull you into a tight hug and hold you there for a moment. When you both pulled away, she waved over the waiting paramedics, who gave you a few damp wipes to clean your face.
Hailey helped you wipe the blood off your face and neck, watching you struggle to not be ill at the idea of someone else's blood covering you. She kept you calm and held your hand, reassuring you that everything was alright the whole time.
When you were done clearing your face, she took both your hands and started whipping your arms and hands. As she did, your eyes wandered to the scene around you. There had to be at least 6 or 7 patrol cars all parked haphazardly around the street. Uniformed officers were already setting up the tape and directing crowds and media away from the debris field. You could see Gallo sitting in a different ambulance, he looked unharmed, probably just as shaken as you were. Kevin and Kim were standing by, talking to him and the paramedics.
Voight was standing with the rest of intelligence and Trudy, commanding the uniformed officers and lab techs around the scene. As you looked over you spotted Jay, who was standing with his arms crossed over his chest. He glanced over as you were looking, making eye contact and breaking away from the group.
Voight and the others watched him approach you and Hailey. When he got up to you, he quickly pulled you into a hug. He was squeezing you so tight it was almost constricting. You didn't have the heart to tell him that. When he pulled away he forced you to sit back down next to Hailey.
"Are you alright?" He asked gently.
You couldn't find the words to reply, just shaking your head.
Jay grimaced, nodding in understanding. "Hailey is going to go with you to Med, yeah? I'll come as soon as we finish here."
You nodded, your voice still having not returned. Jay pressed a kiss to your hairline, helping you to your feet and into the ambulance. He sent you one last smile before he shut the doors and watched the Rig pull away.
"She okay?" Voight asked as he rejoined the gathered officers.
Jay sighed, "I don't think so, she's really shaken."
Kim nodded, "Gallo told us what happened, she locked him in the bathroom like she knew they would open fire on them."
Jay remembered all the times he told you when you were younger - the safest place in that situation is in the bathtub. Seeming you didn't have one, the bathroom had been your attempt to make do with little resources. The team kept looking at him like they were expecting him to snap, such a brazen attack on his sister with so many witnesses meant there was something bigger at play here. Jay wasn't angry - he was seething. The white-hot fury that slowly burns away at your heart, that would make you act like never before.
Will was feeling something similar when he watched you walk into med for the second time that day. This time, however, he knew you were hurt. Hailey was holding you up, tightly gripping your forearm and steering you into the ED. You had refused to be wheeled in on the gurney, adrenaline coursing through you still, making you unable to feel the pain.
Will dropped his tablet on the desk, running over to you and taking your other arm as you pitched to one side.
"What the hell happened?" He asked, taking in the smudges of blood on your skin and the stains over your shirt.
Hailey answered for you as you fought to stay present, your mind wanting to swallow you whole and ignore the outside world.
Will helped you into the bed, the deja vu of the situation made your skin crawl.
"Hey, what's going on?" Dr Marcel asked as he wanted in, a nurse on his heels. Will looked at you to explain, but you were replaying the night before you. Watching your apartment rip apart again, hearing the crunching of footprints over and over.
"Y/N?" Will grabbed your hand, smoothing your hair back as he tried to calm you down. The monitors started to beep as your heart rate rose and oxygen levels dropped. "Try to breathe, squirt."
You shook your head, unable to slow your breathing or gather any control to do so.
"Can we get a cannula on her please?" Dr Marcel ordered. You could feel the tube being placed on your face, looped around your ears. It made you uncomfortable but there was nothing to do about it.
You gripped Will's hand even tighter, choking on sobs and your own gaps for air. Will watched helplessly, trying to calm you to no avail.
"Will," Crockett spoke, ".5 of versed?"
Will knew the last thing you would have wanted was to be sedated but your oxygen stats were dropping, even with the cannula. He nodded to Marcel, letting him know to go ahead.
He prepped the meds quickly and behind his turned back, when you caught on to what was going on you were already too far gone in your own panic attack to protest. Eventually, the versed did its job of calming you down enough to allow you to relax and feel safe.
"Sorry," You croaked, throat raw from the earlier events.
Will smiled, "You just had to see me again, huh?"
You laughed a little, the movement sending an ache through your stomach, "Don't make me laugh," You pouted holding your abdomen as if it would help.
Crockett watched you two with an amused grin, now that you had calmed down, he asked where you were hurt.
Will had to give you his stern 'I'm the eldest so you do as I say' look, knowing how you and jay both resisted hospitals greatly.
"My right side," You explained to Crockett, gesturing to your right ribs where you had been cruelly sucker punched.
Crockett gently lifted your shirt off the area, even through his gloves you could feel how cold his hands were. He pressed against one of your ribs, causing you to let out a strangled, "Fuck," at the sudden pain.
Crockett smiled sheepishly, "Sorry."
You scowled at him, "Yeah, sure you are."
"Glad to see your humour is still intact," Crockett joked, laughing at Will who looked less than impressed at the two of you bantering.
You smiled at your brother, trying to reassure him that you were fine now. Even though your mind was still full of fog. Every time you stopped to think about it, you were brought back to the events in your living room.
When Dr Marel finished his prodding, he said he would get you on the waitlist for a CT, but that it might take some time. You had to bug Will to go back to his shift, promising that you wouldn't pull a Jay and try to break out. He had only agreed after Hailey promised she wouldn't let you leave either.
"How's Gallo?" You asked Hailey, having not seen him since the ambulance.
Hailey smiled, "He's alright, Sarg took him back to the precinct until we figure out the best way to handle all this."
"Okay," You replied, sighing at the idea that this wasn't all over, just yet.
After the CT scan Dr Marcel assured you and Will - although mostly Will - that you had no broken ribs, but some gnarly bruises that might leave you stiff for a few days. You had grumbled about not being able to go back to work and Dr Marcel laughed at how irritated Will looked.
Hailey had helped you get dressed in some clean clothes, some of your sweats she'd nabbed from your apartment. She helped you put on a zip-up, apologizing at your winces when you had to move too fast. Will had given you a gentle side hug as you and Hailey left, promising that you could crash at his.
After you got done at the precinct and relayed your statement for the umpteenth time, Jay drove you to Wills. He hovered more than usual, giving you his jacket to keep you warm and letting you know he would go to your apartment and grab some of your stuff.
“You don’t have to go out of your way,” You laughed, letting him bring you a coffee.
“I won’t be,” Jay replied, gently squeezing your shoulder, “Working the case remember?”
Tumblr media
It took a week for you to get back to work, the bruising had gone from purple to green, looking more gnarly than before. It didn’t hurt so much anymore, at least not enough that you couldn’t work. You walked into the firehouse at the start of your shift expecting the ‘surprise’, but it still scared the living daylights out of you. When you walked into the common room, there was no one around. Expecting them all to be gathering in the locker room like they normally did, you thought nothing of it.
When they all rounded the corner into the room shouting you jumped hallways to the roof.
“What on earth?” You asked, laughing as they handed you a small box.
“Ah,” Hermann waved his hand, “Just open it.”
You laughed, flipping the box open to reveal a plastic police badge. Immediately you burst out laughing, “A police badge?” “Yeah! Seeming you got Intelligence that case, you’re like a cop now,” Gallo joked, playfully elbowing you.
“Oof,” You grabbed your side, slightly doubling over where Gallo elbowed you.
Brett was at your side instantly, grabbing your arm and asking what was wrong. Gallo had gone pale, looking terrified he had just hurt you again.
“Are you alright?” Kidd asked, coming to stand next to Brett with her eyebrows knitted.
You straightened up, dropping your hands, “Yeah, I’m fine.” You grinned, “Just wanted to mess with Gallo.”
Everyone laughed, cheering about how it was good to have you back. Gallo grabbed you into a hug, complaining about how that prank was cruel. You sat down to have breakfast with them all, telling Gallo, “It’s payback for that god-awful date you set me up on.”
Being back to work was exactly what you needed. As much as you loved your brothers, they were hovering a lot and it was nice to get back to a little bit of normality. Your apartment was being repaired, the landlord taking her time and dragging her feet about the ordeal. So, living with Will had meant everything still felt strange. Your truck never treated you any differently though, being back sitting with Gallo and Carver in the truck was the best you’d felt since the incident.
After a couple of shifts, you’d fallen back into the rhythm of it all, you and Will worked differing shifts so you would often get home to him leaving for work or vise versa. The more you were back on the job the more you started to forget the whole incident. You were at Molly’s one night after shift when Jay and Hailey had come to chill. They had let you know if passing the case was still unsolved and that the police chief had set them up on another case seeming that one didn’t have any leads. You didn’t mind much, it was easier to leave it in the past. Besides, the men who had attacked you and Gallo in your apartment had been locked in prison out of state, you barely had to testify seeming the entire encounter was captured by your neighbour's security cameras. You had gone back to your normal life, responding to fires and car crashes and the occasional ‘how did they get stuck there’ calls.
“All Units, Structure fire, S Canal St.”
You all jumped into action, suiting up and climbing into the rig.
“S Canal street? Isn’t that warehouses?” Carver asked.
“Yeah,” Kidd replied, frowning at her screen.
When all the companies pulled up the address, all of you climbed out to see the seemingly abandoned area.
“Where’s the fire?” Severiade asked no one in particular.
You were all suited up, Truck, Engine and Squad prep with SCBAs with no fire to respond to.
“Spread out, see what you can find,” Kidd ordered. You, Violet and Brett walked around the side of the warehouse to see if you could find anything. As you were approaching the back of the building you saw a door left open.
“Lieutenant,” You spoke to the radio, “There's a door open on the B side near the back.”
There was no reply, you frowned and tried again. When there was still nothing you turned to Brett and Violet, “Maybe the radios are down?”
Brett frowned, trying her radio to no response.
“Help!”
You looked back into the warehouse, trying to decide what to do.
“Okay,” You sighed, “I’m going to go in, maybe you guys can go back and get the others?”
Brett looked apprehensive but agreed, telling Violet to go get Kelly and Stella while she grabbed the gurney. You walked into the warehouse, grabbing your tac light and turning it on to look around.
“Fire Department, Call out!”
There was no response, the warehouse was so quiet you could hear your footsteps echoing off the walls.
“Fire Department, Call out!” You repeated. This time you could hear a reply. As you headed further into the warehouse you heard a loud slam. You frowned, turning around to see the door you entered from was shut.
“Brett?” You spoke into the radio, “Anyone copy?”
You started to get uneasy, there was something wrong here. Turning back to where you heard the victim last, you came around a corner to see a room full of machinery.
“Fire department!”“Here!” As you stepped into the room, you knew for sure something was wrong. It felt like your entire body was charged with nervous energy, the hair on your arms standing on end. You had got to stop getting into these situations.
You raised your halligan a little higher, ditching your flashlight and opting for the more weapon-like thing you had. You tried to check every corner and crevice as you walked through the room, but there was nothing to see. Or nothing that you could see. You walked around the final corner where you saw a man lying on the ground, half under what looked like some kind of crusher.
“Sir?”
You took an apprehensive step forward, lowering the Halligan. As you did, you felt the smooth metal of a blade being pressed above your collar.
“Drop the bar.”
You did as you were told, letting the metal clang to the ground and offering the suspect your hands. The man who was on the ground got up, simply sliding out from where he was.
Just my luck.
The man lowered the blade and grabbed our hands, pushing you forward towards a door back to the main warehouse room.
“...stead… do you… rep…”
You were dragged from the first floor to the basement, zip tied at the wrists and forced to your knees. A man with a rifle stood at the doorway, wearing the same black military tac the men t your apartment were wearing.
‘Is this about the drug den?” You demanded, “Because I told your buddies when they destroyed my apartment, I don’t know where the police put your stuff.”
One of the men walked up, your mind immediately started to go over the features you could see from how covered he was.
6’2”, brown eyes, white.
“I don’t believe you, Lady firefighter.”
Texan accent. Texan Accent?
“Why would I lie to you?” You snarled, “I really don’t feel like dying in the dirt and I’m clearly not a cop.”
You could hear the smile in his voice, “I don’t care about the product anymore, love.”
“Then what?”
“You got four of my best men locked up.”
“Clearly they aren’t the best if they got themselves locked-”
His fist slammed hard into the side of your face, sending your head snapping to the side. You could taste the copper in your mouth from the blood. You licked your lips, feeling the split that started bleeding.
“Halstead… …are you…”
Texas reached for your radio, he fiddled with the buttons as if trying to inspect its functions.
You pointed to the button on the side, “You hold that button to turn it off,” You told him, smiling pleasantly knowing it would irk him.
“...firefighter Hal… …respond… …you copy…”
Kidd was sounding more and more frantic in the broken bits you could hear.
Texas was clearly getting fed up with the interruption, he held down the button on the side. The radio crackled signifying it was relaying to the team.
“You know, they will call the cops if I don’t respond,” You said, trying to act casual.
“Let them,” Texas hissed, “You’ll be dead before they get inside.”
He let go of the button, frowning at it and waiting to see if there were any more responses.
“...Repeat that…”
“...CPD… the way…”
“You fucking bitch.”
You smiled, teeth stained red from the blood on your lips, “You really should know how to use a radio, jackass.”
Tumblr media
Violet came running around the corner up the Kidd and Severide as they stood trying to figure out where the caller is.
“We found the entrance,” She told them, “We heard someone, Y/N went in”
“Alone?” Kidd demanded.
Violet nodded, gesturing to Sylvie, “Brett had to get the gurney, our radios aren’t working.”
Severiade gestured for Violet to lead the way to the door as Kidd rounded up the rest of the company.
When they all got to the door, they realized it was locked tight.
Severiade tried opening it, pulling it to no avail.
“We could force it open?” Stella asked.
Kelly frowned, gesturing to the door, “It’s an old-style security door, the hinges are on the inside.”
Kidd turned to him, “Something doesn’t seem right.”
“I agree,” Kelly responded, looking up the building for signs of other ways to get in.
“Can squad get the door open?”
“Yeah,” Kelly replied, “But it’ll take some time.”
As kelly started barking orders to the gathered firefighters, Kidd stepped back at tried the radio.
“Halstead,” She spoke into the radio, “Do you Copy? Report.”
There was no response.
“Our radios weren’t working at all before,” Violet offered, “Maybe there's some kind of interference from inside?”
The group watched as Cruz and Severiade made slow work cutting through part of the door, trying to find a way to break into the door. They had to keep replacing the blades to the saw that broke, making the job tedious.
“Halstead, are you okay?” Kidd tried again
She sighed, “Gallo, Carver, did you find any other entrance?”
Carver shook his head, “Only an old garage door, but it’s bolted up from what we could see.”
Kidd sighed, knowing the best chance would be to get you on the radio somehow.
“Firefighter Halstead, respond. Do you Copy!”
There was a crackle in everyone's radio.
“...know… …call the cops…”
Everyone grimaced at the sharp scratch the radios made.
“... dead before…”
“That wasn’t Y/N,” Mouch noted, it was definitely a male voice who spoke the second time.
“Y/N, can you repeat that?”
Silence.
“Dispatch, this is truck 51 requesting immediate police backup. We have a possible hostage situation here.”
“Copy that, Truck 51. Patrol is on route.”
“Halstead? CPD is on the way, what’s going on?”
Tumblr media
Adam took the stairs two at a time, bounding into the Bullpen and telling them all to be quiet. He turned the volume up on his radio.
“...Units on the city-wide, any available units to 1399 S Canal St, Truck 51 reported a possible hostage situation with a firefighter.”
Jay stood up from his desk, grabbed his phone and called you. The phone rang and rang but you didn’t pick up. He frowned, searching through his contacts until he found Stella Kidd's name. He only had her name for emergencies and this was definitely one.
“Jay?” Kidd answered.
“Stella, what’s going on, we heard dispatch call for cars to your location.”
“Listen,” She responded, “Y/N went into a warehouse and the door locked behind them, we can’t reach them on the radio. We got a broken bit of a conversation, she said ‘call the cops’ and a man responded ‘dead before’.”
Voight immediately ordered the group to tac up and head to the location, knowing how important this was to them all.
When they all arrived, they joined the firehouse at the side door. By now, Squad had almost got the doors open, they only had to pry them open with the jaws before it would all be a go.
Voight ordered everyone but Severiade and Cruz back to the trucks, but the firefighters all stubbornly refused.
“We’ll stay out of the way but we gotta be close, what if they need us?” Kidd had argued.
Voight didn’t have time to argue, letting them stand far enough from the door that they wouldn't be in the line of fire if there was an offender at the door.
“Ready?” Severiade asked the gathered officers. “On three. One, two, three.”
He and Joe pulled the door open, getting out of the way for the 7 police officers to rush inside.
The team quickly and quietly cleared every room, making it around the basement until they found the stairs to the basement. Voight gave them the clear to make their way down the stairs, letting Kevin and Torres lead the way. At the bottom of the stairs there looked like there was nothing. The room was pitch black, the only light from the teams flashlights.
Kim sweaped her flashlight across the room, "Hey, Adam?"
Adam joined her side, "What is it?"
Kim pointed to a door, a large metal vault door similar to the one outside. It was cracked open slightly, sending a slight draft around the room.
Adam nodded, gesturing for Kim to lead the way to the door. Adam opened it and Kim lead the way into the next room. The room was less a room and more the landing to fire escape.
Kim called out to the rest of the team, they all gathered on the landing, coming to the same conclusion, the suspects had left the building and now they were playing catch up.

All you could think about was all of the times Jay told you about these kinds of cases, about how he and Atwater found Kim through Kim's persistent efforts. How most of the time victims had to fight to be found. He mentioned once how he responded to a call as a patrol officer, to find a women had jumped out of a moving car to avoid being kidnapped. At the time it was his way to teach you to be careful, but you were freshly 21 and laughed him off.
You really should have payed more attention.
It hadn't been long, definitely less than an hour since Texas had forced you out of a fire escape and into the back of a car. You'd given about as much trouble as you could, kicking him in shin when he'd shoved you into the care. You knew it had to hurt with your uniform boots, but he didn't seem too happy about it.
You had passed at least two blocks and tried to count, but the warehouses made it hard to focus. The driver turned down a street and then into a car junkyard. You would have laughed at the irony had it not meant upsetting Mr texas more.
When he and the driver got out of the car, they stepped away to talk to a new person you didn't recognize. She was at least dressed like a normal person if more fancy than you would have thought necessary for a junkyard.
As a last-ditch effort you tried the radio, "Lieutenant, do you copy?"
There was no reply. You were on your own.
The door was thrown open and you were dragged out of the car. As if they finally remembered they were kidnapping a firefighter, they roughly grabbed your SCBA and threw it to the side, ditching the equipment somewhere near a line of crushed cars. Texas and the driver grabbed you by the arms and pulled you along the gravel until you were towards the back of the yard. You kicked and screamed, trying to break the ties on your wrists or bring any kind of attention.
They threw you on the ground, Texas brandished his revolver and pointed it at you. All you wanted to do was scream and plead, but there was no time. The gun went off and you hit the ground.
The first thing you recognized was the PASS alarm. It was far enough away that it was slightly muffled, but you could hear it clearly through the yard. You hoped that maybe someone would hear it over the traffic noises going on around you. Any sense of fight had left, it was clear this wasn't a kidnapping it was an execution. Now all you could do was lay hopelessly in the dirt.

"Dr Acher, Dr Asher, we got incoming!"
"Brett, talk to me!" Hannah called as she joined gourney rolling through the doors.
"Y/N Halstead," Brett started to rattle off, "GCS 9, perforating head wound. CPD found her in a car yard, no idea how long she was there."
Will had to hold Jay back from barrelling straight into the room, trying to persuade him that it would be okay without fully believing it himself.
"Page Neuro," Dr Archer ordered, "Let's get a CT and push fluids."
Hannah's face was hovering over you, you could feel a sharp pain in your chest as she performed a sternum rub.
"Y/N?" She pressed, "How are you feeling?"
You groaned, trying to swat her hand away but being held back by the nurses. Everything was moving so fast, it felt like your head had been hit by a sledgehammer. Any sense of time or spacial awareness was gone. It was like an out-of-body experience, but not the fun kind.
When you were next aware of your surroundings, your hand felt clammy. You forced your eyes open and grimaced at the brightness. You pulled your hands towards your face, trying to block the light.
"No, hey, don't," Jay protested, grabbing your hands and pulling them away from the bandages on your head.
You frowned at him, unable to muster up any more energy to fight him. You were half asleep, the feeling of not knowing if your dreaming or not. Jay was at your side, holding your hand. You wanted to tease him about how clammy his hands felt, but talking was too much energy. Hailey was beside Jay, she smiled brightly at you and pulled a blanket higher around your body.
After a while Will came into the room carrying coffee cups, he grinned when he saw you half awake. He gently pulled you into a hug, helping you prop yourself up on the bed.
"I don't get a coffee?" You croaked, attempting a chuckle that ended in coughing.
Will helped you sit up, holding your arm as you coughed like a child.
He and Jay helped you lay back down, Will fussed over the monitors and jay pulled the blanket back up again. You lazily pushed his hands away mumbling about being fine and he was smothering you. Jay ignored you and continued fussing.
You spent 3 weeks in the hospital, Dr Abrams had kept telling you about how lucky you were to be alive - let alone spend such a short time in the ICU. During that time, Will and Jay were almost always around. If they weren't, it would be someone from 51 or all of them.
You had woken up one day to the entire lot of them crammed into the room, somehow managing not to wake you with their rowdiness. They had all teased you about the situation,
"Only you would get yourself in that situation, Halstead," Violet joked, playfully poking your arm.
You had shrugged and proclaimed you wanted the paid time off.
When you were released, Dr Abrams had schooled Will on everything to look out for, warning the both of you to be on high alert. You were expecting it, but still the scolding only made Will more protective.
He always doctored you and Jay, but now it felt like he was less your brother and more a live-in doctor. Staying with him meant you didn't have to worry about your own apartment - which you had essentially been evicted of. And gave both Will and Jay peace of mind. It also meant that Jay could come around whenever he wanted because he had a key.
Will had found you both on the couch one day after his shift. Jay was watching some rerun of a hockey game and you had your legs thrown over his lap, completely passed out covered in blankets.
Even after you had gotten much better, Will insisted that you stayed with him. Jay had teased the two of you were lonely and had gotten used to each other's company and neither of you could argue because he was right. You had been cleared by Abrams to do light duty and got to play Fire Cop alongside Lieutenant Seager. Joe hadn't stopped giving you shit about it. Every time you came to Molly's he'd declared, "The fire cops here!" and envelope you in a massive hug.
After almost 8 months of doing nothing and working a desk job, you finally managed to beg Boden and Abrams to sign off on letting you back on Truck. The company had been functioning without you for so long that you worried they might eventually have to replace you. It took more convincing Jay to let you go back to work than Will. Will knew you were stronger than ever - having come with you to most of your appointments. Jay however, was worried about you getting hurt again.
You had rolled your eyes and said, "what like you do?"
Hailey had to hold in her laughter at the stare off the two of you had.
You'd sworn your brothers and Boden to secrecy, knowing they would accidentally tell the house if you didn't tell them to keep their mouths shut. You'd even gone so far as to bum a ride off Will, not wanting to let them know you were there.
You'd walked into the briefing room when Boden was declaring there was a new addition to Truck. You hadn't known he had set you up for an entrance - which made it all the more amusing for you when you walked into the briefing room and they all but exploded with excitement. Violet and Brett were the closest to you, they both jumped out of their chairs and pulled you into a hug. When you pulled away, Gallo and Ritter were pulling you into their own hugs.
When the hugs and welcomes were done, you felt like you were finally home. Things were back to normal, sure they were different than before, but maybe even better.

I shall be reposting fics I have read on this account rather than on my main account so authors still get the credit they deserve without me sharing them over my own fics.
