Despite having grown up in Oregon, I did not know about John West or the canning company that lives on with his name. West was a Scotsman always looking for his next venture. First, it was lumber in Canada. Then, the California Gold Rush caught his fancy. Finally, he ended up in Oregon with a land claim and plenty of trees to harvest. Soon he was shipping lumber to far off places such as Australia. He also started dabbling in food, shipping fish. The place where he settled in Oregon became the community of Westport, along the Columbia River. John West died there in 1888. The John West brand is still big in Britain. I have never seen any of the products anywhere in America, although the business started in Oregon by packing Pacific salmon in salt and shipping it to customers worldwide. The brand became known for quality, both in the United States and Europe. Today, the company is headquartered in Liverpool, England. I came across the John West name while watching a video of canning operations on YouTube. I was curious about the name, and thanks to Google, I learned quite a bit.
