K/S Advent 2022: Masterlist and Wrap-Up

It's the 1st of January, 2023 (at least in this mod's timezone)! Happy New Year! May it be filled with peace and love, joy and laughter, inspiration and creativity! 

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Kirk/Spock Advent Calendar 2022! Authors, artists, beta-readers, readers, and reviewers – thank you for making this K/S Advent such a beautiful experience and, dare we say, a great success! 

We made it to 59 submissions, posted by 31 creators; the works consist of 42 fics, 1 podfic, 2 poems, 1 playlist, 14 artworks (digital art, traditional art, manips, 3D objects), and even 1 submission of baked goods.

Out of the 73 prompts that were submitted, 41 were filled, several of them multiple times. At the time of closing the collection for posting, 13 claims were left unposted (the numbers shown on AO3 differ a bit as not everyone made use of the official claiming/filling process).

If your prompt(s) did not get filled, you can submit them as new requests for Advent 2023, if you wish to. If you do not want to wait that long, you can also submit them to our sister event Kirk/Spock Spring Fever which will go live in March 2023, a fest without any specific theme as long as the work is focused on Kirk and Spock, be it slash or gen/friendship. On the mod side of things, we had an almost exclusively positive experience. One thing we might want to handle differently next year is how strict we are about the submission deadline; we wanted to be as generous as possible with deadline extensions, but this made scheduling the daily reveals a bit more difficult. As the creation phase is quite long for K/S Advent, we hope that creators can be encouraged to submit their works sooner. Spock sees Jim everywhere, preparing decorations, trying to make sure his crew have the perfect holiday. But Spock sees deeper. During the holiday, although Jim is chatty and merry and seems excited, Spock sees that all of it is artificial, underscored by deep sadness. He manages to talk to Jim and makes him admit his true feelings.

Haven’t been able to post for awhile because it’s the end of the semester and there’s still so much to do! Anyway, here’s a small text I wrote for our geek club’s “X-mas calendar” which theme is “what are you geek about?”

Right now my favorite is definitely Star Trek: The Original Series, a weird sci-fi show from the 60's. I found my way to the fandom through a very long bend: I watched one episode (and a half of one of those new movies) sometimes in high school, but soon became bored and finally I just forgot the existence of the series. This fall, after all these years, I decided to give the series another chance. Above all, Star Trek has brought many scenes of laughter at the end of a busy weekday, and it has been fascinating to explore the phenomena behind the series during its fifty-year journey. I hope someday I become an old and wise grandma who has been a fan of cool stuff for decades. I give honorable mentions to Doctor Who, comics & the book called "The Perks of Being a Wallflower".

Day 22 - Spirk

James looks around and groans. Why are there so many planets, who have such a terrible and especially cold winter. It’s the third planet in row, that they discover and here is so much snow as well. James hates it.

„Captain?“ Spock asks and then stands next to him. James look in the other direction, but he can’t see anything else than snow.

„Maybe we try this way.“ James says and he puts on some gloves. He also searches for a thick beanie and a scarf, because he is already freezing right now.

„Captain, do you need more people to come with you?“ Scotty asks and shudders already, even though he is technically still in the Enterprise. James sighs and looks back at Spock.

„Nobody. Spock and I are going alone.“ He knows the crew is tired and everybody wants Christmas to spend at home. If this planet is peaceful or even uninhabited, then they all could go home and spend Christmas with their family. Well James would spend it alone, but you know.

„Are you sure, Captain?“ Spock asks and James nods. Well actually he isn’t sure. He would preferred to go with someone different, but Spock is the one, who is still the fittest. So they would make it work.

„Ready, Spock?“ James asks and without waiting for an answer, he already starts walking. He can hear Spock behind him, but he doesn’t look back. The last few months were hard for all of them and James is very thankful for his wonderful team.

He even stopped fighting with Spock and they became …close friends. And there is the problem. James wants Spock to be more. He was unsure at first, but after Spock ended things with Uhura, he… he couldn’t think of anything else. He wishes Spock could see that, too.

„What do you think? 30 Minutes and then we go back?“ James asks and looks back at Spock. Who looks a bit..unwell.

„Sure, Captain.“ Spock says and even his voice, doesn’t sound so good. James stops and turns completely around. Spock watches him silently and doesn’t seem to know what’s wrong.

„Are you okay?“ James asks and he worries already. What if Spock is ill? What if he is dying and James can’t do anything out here and…

„Of course.“ Spock says then and his teeth chatter. James raises both eyebrows and Spock looks just as surprised about his own behavior. James wants to laughs, because Spock normally doesn’t show his emotions, but James can see them clearly now. His stomach flutters at the thought.

„You sure?“ James asks grinning, because now he knows what’s wrong.

„Yes.“ Spock says and he starts shivering. No wonder. He wears a jacket at least, but nothing more. HIs pointy ears must be so cold, James can’t help it. He chuckles.

„I think - you are cold. Very cold.“ James says slowly and Spock tries to keep his emotions at bay this time. It doesn’t work at all, but it looks adorable.

„Even if I was, we couldn’t change anything about my situation now.“ Spock says and he tries to get around James, so they would start walking again. James knows even if Spock would be running right now, he is already way too cold and would get ill, if they don’t change that.

„Oh yes we can.“ James says and he takes off his gloves and holds them out for Spock.

„No.“ Spock says, when he understands what James wants to do. But James just rolls his eyes and throws the gloves into the snow, right in front of Spock.

„Good. Well then nobody from us will wear them.“ James says and Spock huffs at that. James grins and starts walking again. After ten steps he glances back and sees that Spock wears the gloves. Step 1: success.

„This is childish.“ Spock says anyway and James grins. He turns around again and takes his beanie off. He holds it out for Spock. This time he just takes it and he even smiles a bit, when the beanie covers his ears. James blushes, when he thinks about Spock wearing his clothes.

Spock looks cute in the beanie and James grins again.

„You should definitely keep that. You look good.“ James whispers and Spock has this surprised look on his face again. James likes it a lot actually.

„Thank you.“ Spock says so seriously and honest, that James laughs again. He also takes his scarf off and comes closer. He is the one, that puts the scarf around Spock’s neck. They are dangerously close now.

„I mean it.“ James whispers again and … just one step and he would be close enough to kiss Spock. James shakes his head a bit and then goes several steps back. He winks at Spock, before he starts walking even faster.

Oh no. What did he do. What if there friendship would be destroyed now?

„James.“

His real name makes him stop. Spock never uses his real name, unless it’s something important. He can feel that Spock is directly behind him.

„Spock?“ He asks back, just to buy some time. Spock waits a few seconds to answer.

„What… if I’m still cold?“ Spock asks and James laughs loudly. Is Spock flirting with him? Is he flirting back?

„Well I heard kissing warms people up.“ James says and he is smirking now. Spock pulls a bit at his sleeve and James turns towards him.

„You heard that, yeah? Then I think we should try it. “ Spock whispers and James’ brain just stops thinking. So he does what he wants for months now. He takes the last step and kisses Spock. He even holds onto his own scarf, that still around Spock’s neck. And it’s perfect.

It’s only because Spock is cold, of course.

Hopefully they find even more planets, that are buried in snow.

Leonard sighed and muttered "Be safe" even though they couldn't hear it. He walked over to the counter again and started adding a few of the fruits. "Go rest, darlin'. The soup will be ready soon."

She gnawed on her tongue, the itching in her mouth was getting worse, but she didn't let him know. Instead, she slid her arms around his waist from behind and rested her head on his back.

K/S Advent Calendar 2022 - Schedule, Rules, Links

Kirk/Spock Advent Calendar is an annual fest celebrating Kirk/Spock throughout the month of December via fic, art, vids, and other forms of fannish expression. The fest takes place on the AO3: K/S Advent Calendar 2022 Collection. The event was originally created by kira-nerys (Lady Kardasi) in 2002, and has been hosted and moderated by different fans throughout the years: 2002-2005: kira-nerys 2006-2007: Farfalla 2008: Valioffire Dale 2009-2017: Amanda Warrington and Ashley (arminaa) For 2022, we bring it back.

No, K/S Advent Calendar is not a Christian (or, generally, religious) event. So no one is guaranteed a "gift", but there's also much less pressure on participants. Members sign up and post prompts until the defined deadline (see the schedule). Prompts can be claimed by anyone who has an account on the AO3, and the resulting fanworks need to be posted to the collection until the deadline according to schedule. If you need more detailed information on how a prompt meme works (e.g. how to edit your prompts, where to find your claimed prompts etc), please see this section in the AO3 FAQ. Do I need to be signed up to claim & fill a prompt? What if I missed the sign-up phase? Admittedly, the term "sign-up" is a tiny bit misleading. The "sign-up" form is for submitting your prompts; if you would like to claim & fill prompts without submitting a prompt yourself, then you do not need to go through the "sign-up" form. Just browse the list of prompts other fans submitted and use the "claim" button to pick whatever tickles your muse. When you claim a prompt it shows up under "My claims" on the collection profile and under "Claims" on your own dashboard. Use the "fulfil" button to post your work, please.   Rules: 1. K/S Advent Calendar is an event for adults as some prompts or fanworks might be mature or explicit. By taking part you confirm that you are 18 or older. 2. The theme of this fest is very wide: December comes with a multitude of holidays, traditions, and days of significance around the world, be they secular or religious or even fictional (e.g. Festivus or Hogswatch); all of them can be explored for this fest, as can the topics of end-of-year, New Year, winter, and family gatherings. The focus of your work should be on the pairing Kirk/Spock or Kirk & Spock. Slash (romantic and/or sexual relationship) and gen (friendship) are equally welcome. K/S has many layers and aspects, and this fest is a celebration of them all. No other pairings will be accepted (mentioning side pairings of other characters is fine, but the focus must be on K/S). 3. When we say K/S, we mean: both TOS (series and movies) and reboot; Discovery and Strange New Worlds content is also welcome (let's hope we'll get some K/S-worthy material from these series one day). No RPF, please. AUs and mirror universe are welcome. 4. Crossovers between different Trek franchises or between Trek and other media are permitted if the individual prompt states this or actively invites them. 5. All ratings are welcome in this fest. However, when you fill a prompt please stick to the preferred rating of the prompter (if stated in the prompt). 6. All genres welcome, including darker subjects if the prompter asks for them (as long as DNWs are respected). Use the AO3 warnings if applicable. 7. Prompts can be filled by more than one person. You can even fill the same prompt multiple times – the "fulfil" button will show up on the prompt you claimed even if you have already used it for posting a work before. 8. Participants can fill as many prompts as they want to. You can even fill your own prompt. 9. Please list your DNWs (Do-Not-Wants) in the prompt if you want to avoid certain types of content, e.g. rape or character death or specific tropes. When you submit several prompts, please state your DNWs for each. We kindly ask you to not abuse the DNW system: keep it short and simple, and don't box in your creator. When you fill a prompt, please respect the DNWs listed in the request. 10. All types of fanworks are welcome in this fest: fic, poetry, filks, art, vids, podfic etc. Made a giant cake with life-size Kirk and Spock marzipan figures? Post the photos. 11. Minimum word count for written fanworks is 100 words. There is no maximum word count. Minimum for art: a doodle or clean sketch (on unlined paper, if you use traditional media); manips are permitted. No banner or icon art, please, unless it accompanies a work of fiction. 12. Fanworks in languages other than English are allowed: As this is not a one-on-one gift exchange, but a prompt fest, fanworks in languages other than English are absolutely permitted and welcome! Each prompt can inspire a wide variety of fanworks, and as long as you respect the DNWs and the maximum rating of the chosen prompt, it’s all fine! 13. For K/S Advent Calendar, the works will be gradually revealed, at least one per day, hopefully even more than one if there are enough submissions. There is no anon period, but we ask you to not blabber about your work on social media before it appears in the collection. As soon as your work is revealed, you can link or re-post it anywhere you want to. While your work is in the queue and waiting for its scheduled day to go live, it will be marked as "awaiting approval by the mod". Fear not, this is just part of how the gradual reveal that is key for an advent calendar works. 14. Works posted to the collection must be new (created for this fest and unpublished) and complete. No WIPs or placeholder uploads! If you post a work with more than one chapter, it must be complete before the due date. 15. We allow extra works to be posted to the collection: If nothing among the submitted prompts tickles your muse, and if you missed the chance of submitting a prompt that you could have filled yourself, then you can still take part in K/S Advent Calendar by posting the work directly to the collection, without using any "claim" or "fulfil" button. Make sure to put the correct collection name into the appropriate field during the posting process (e.g. for 2022 the collection name is "KS_AdventCalendar2022", without the quote marks), so that the work stays unrevealed until it goes live. We think of these extra works as treats for the whole community. However, please do have a good look at the list of prompts before you choose to take this road. There are such lovely prompts waiting for creators to pick them, and this should take priority over treats. 16. 2020 fanfic review meme!

Thanks to @livenudebigfoot for tagging me and providing me with a legitimate excuse to reflect self-indulgently on my special interest: writing obsessive amounts of fic for Michael Emerson vehicles. What fic did I disgorge from my brain maw this year? This was the year I started writing for Person of Interest, the fandom that changed my life! I found a fannish community on the Subway discord and joined a whole bunch of exchanges, which I’d never done before. 

In February for chocolate_box, I wrote 7 stories:

The Life of the World to Come (Person of Interest, Reese/Finch): Canon compliant fix it in which Reese wakes up in a lakeside cabin about 6 weeks after he died. Unspecified magical bargains were involved.

Arctic Flower (POI, Grace/Jessica): An AU in which Jessica rushes to assist Grace when a cyclist knocks her down in the park, and their friendship enables her to leave Peter before it’s too late.

A Bird of Foreign Tongue (POI, Reese/Finch): A sequel to Arctic Flower in which Harold finds still-in-the-CIA Reese and offers him an escape route.

Objet d’Art (POI, Finch/Grace): During a coffee date early in their pre-canon relationship, Harold has a guilty conscience about all the secrets he’s hiding from Grace.

Kintsugi (POI, Finch/Grace): The longer sequel to Objet D’art. Grace gets sick. She doesn’t have health insurance. Harold panics and decides to take care of her himself.

Incentives (POI, Reese/Fusco): John’s in the trunk. 

Fixer-Upper (POI, Reese/Zoe Morgan): In every fandom, I write gender AUs. This one is Zoe Morgan taking always-a-girl!Reese under her wing.

Then in the spring, I wrote one story for the Hurt/Comfort Exchange and two for Exchange of Interest:

Line of Duty (POI, Reese/Fusco) 14k about Fusco making really self destructive life choices thanks to low self worth and unresolved trauma, while Reese is forced to stand back and wring his hands. And then, you know, exact a lot of vengeance. Harold has soup.

Number Every One (POI, Reese/Nathan): AU in which Nathan saves Jessica, and Reese comes asking questions.

Eden (POI, Reese/Jessica): A perfect, ordinary moment in John’s relationship with the one person who connects him to the world.

And then I wrote some stories for @livenudebigfoot because I enjoy making her happy.

An Indulgence (POI, Finch/Fusco): Fusco is having an emergency and Finch is there for him. My first foray into ABO and literally all they do is hug; is this my brand?

Bunnymoon (Lost, Ben Linus/John Locke): I acquired this whole new fandom/OTP without meaning to, and then I wrote 8000 words of animal shelter AU for it.

Shipoween was next, and I was very proud of the two stories I wrote because both of them are short and this is hard when you exhale novel-length plot outlines instead of carbon dioxide. Also they are both creepy and kinda experimental, like back in my Buffy days. It was also my first time pinch hitting for an exchange and I got a nice little buzz off pulling that off with one day to deadline.

a lucid dream (Lost, Ben Linus/John Locke): Ben is having a very bad dream, and it’s all his own fault.

One In the Eye (POI, Finch/Fusco): Harold’s a monster. Fusco’s a cryptid.

This was my first year doing a Big Bang exchange and the story I wrote for it is, in my own opinion, the best thing I have ever written.

Kingfishers (POI, Reese/Finch/Grace): An AU in which Harold didn’t introduce himself to Grace that day in the park. Years later, after Harold starts working with John, they receive her number. 

I wrote a popular Star Trek fic in 2019 and then went more than a year and a half without updating, two chapters before the end. I’m sorry, I’m a monster. Now there’s only one chapter left before the end. I’m shooting to get it finished by the end of January. I’m sorry I suck so much.

K’diwa: A Steamy Novel of Interspecies Romance (Star Trek AOS, Kirk/Spock) And then, after a swift crash course in participating in fics and exchanges, I took on managing the POI Advent 2020 Calendar. I needed to write a five-parter in order to plug holes in the posting schedule, and a Muppet crossover was born.

Takeaways from reflecting on your kick-ass writing, or kick-ass lack of writing, during a year more focused on survival than perhaps any other:

I’ll be 39 next month. I’ve been writing seriously since I was 15. I was a very good writer for a 15 year old, for a 19 year old, but I could never have dreamed of writing the way I do now. No amount of hard work, practice, reading, conferring with other writers, editing manuscripts, or thinking about craft could have made me the kind of writer it’s possible for me to be in my late 30s. Youthful geniuses are a myth. I’m really grateful my agent couldn’t sell my novel 10 years ago--when I finish the next one I will get to introduce myself to the world as the writer I am now.

Most surprising fic you wrote this year:

Oh, definitely Bunnymoon. I had no idea I would be writing fic for Lost at all, much less that I would be writing a mundane AU with comedy and my first E rated scene in years. It is entirely the fault of bigfoot, who infected me with the fandom in general and the animal shelter concept in specific.

How you’ve grown as a writer this year:

I’ve learned a lot about what not to say--when to trust the reader--and I have benefited hugely from thinking hard about formal structure. Every idea used to turn into a novel whether I wanted to or not, but revisiting high school English lessons about short story structure vs 3 act structure has changed my whole game.

What’s coming in 2021:

I would really like to write one more story in my Harold & Grace series, another story in the Jessica Lives AU, and I’ll def. sign up for HCEX and Shipoween. But also, this year I am writing a novel.  Tagging @theimprobable1, @liz-squids, @argylepiratewd, @sidewaystime
