Ty really had no idea why he was doing this. “It’s a trend!” Dru had said. “Just do it, pretty please?” He had a hard time saying no to her. So he said he would do it, and Dru made him promise to record it. He was silent as he crept into the room. Kit was sitting on the edge of the couch, staring intently at the TV screen. A pair of headphones on his head, with the microphone pulled down near his mouth, and a gaming controller in his hands. Ty wasn’t sure who he was playing with. But Kit said, “You can’t say that! You’re literally, like, 12. I will tell your brother. I’m not afraid to snitch.” so Ty guessed it was probably Tavvy, who liked video games about as much as Dru liked horror movies. 

Was he really going to do this? It sounded so dumb. It also sounded incredibly rude. Kit was in the middle of playing a game, Ty would feel bad if he interrupted it. But he told Dru he would. So now he had too. With Kit’s attention on the TV, he didn’t notice Ty put his phone on the bookshelf against the wall, and press record. Then, before he could psych himself out of it, Ty walked over to Kit, and sat in his lap. His legs stradling either side, and wrapped his arms around Kit’s neck, nuzzling his face into the crook of his neck. Kit froze beneath him for a second, “Uhhh, I gotta go.” He said, and with a few quick taps on the controller, Kit tore his headphones off his head and tossed them and the controller on the floor.

Kit enveloped Ty in his arms, “What’s wrong?” He asked, his breath a light touch against Ty’s skin. He shook his head, “Nothing.” He breathed in Kit’s scent, (he always smelt like honey) and felt at home. Kit chuckled and pulled Ty closer, then he pulled them both down so they were laying on their sides upon the couch. Surprised by the sudden movement, Ty let out a muffled grunt, which only made Kit laugh again. “You’re cute, you know that?” He said. Ty felt himself grin, and dug his face against Kit’s neck in an attempt to hide it from him. But he must have seen it anyway, because he pressed a kiss against Ty’s cheek. It made Ty giggle like a little kid. Then another one on his jaw, one just beneath his ear, and another on his neck. 

A shiver went down Ty’s spine as Kit pressed kisses against his skin, before he let himself succumb to Kit’s gentle touches he pulled back and said, “I should tell you the phone's recording.” He said, pointing across the room to where the phone was propped up on the shelf. Kit furrowed his brows, “Why are we doing that?” He asked, “I mean, I’m cool with whatever you want but I just wanna know why.”

Ty slapped his shoulder, “No.” He said firmly, feeling his face light up read “No.” He said again, “That’s not what I-” He covered his face with his hands, feeling the embarrassment rise up, Kit laughed and ran his hand up and down his back. When Ty managed to pull himself together, he pulled his hands from his face. “Dru wanted me to do an internet trend and send it to her.” He confessed, it sounded kind of dumb when he said it outloud. Kit lifted a brow and then nodded, “Yeah, I know which one.” He smiled, “So you didn’t come and hug me just because you wanted to?” 

Ty shrugged, “No, I wanted to do it anyway.” He kissed Kit’s nose, which then crinkled softly. It made Ty giggle again, and then Kit caught his lips and kissed him, soft and slow. Ty felt a noise build up in the back of his throat, he pulled back abruptly, “It’s still recording,” He rushed out. Kit glanced at the phone, “You said you were sending it to Dru?” Ty nodded. Kit grinned and promptly gave the phone an obscene gesture before kissing Ty once more.

Lord of Shadows Review & Analysis! SPOILERS AHEAD, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK

On another note about spoilers, I get that seeking out spoilers as well as snippets, are a product of waiting so long for the next book… but I don’t know that I will treat them the same way going into QOAAD because I almost felt, while reading, that I had read 35% of the book already! I can’t promise that I won’t seek out spoilers or snippets, but I do hope that less are released over the next two years (I know that sounds ridiculous, but I would prefer a surprise!) With Regards to Individual Characters: • Emma: a feminist badass, growing into being the best shadowhunter of her time but not there yet. Her sarcasm and skill has improved since LM, and I literally laughed out loud during her POV’s and while reading her quotes. The scene with her and Diego and the fire ants= pure gold. Her scene with Manuel and calling out the cohort for being fascists= pure gold. • Julian: a sweetheart and I want to cry thinking about how much he has been through. I know “Dark Julian” has been referenced several times throughout the fandom but I really didn’t see too much of a change until- actually- the steamy scene with Emma where he demands that she calls him only Julian. Very sexy, very dark too. • Cristina: deserves better and I am dying for more of her POV’s. I am always amazed by her class and maturity. • Diego: not perfect. I am mad at him. • Kit: surprisingly likeable. I am so glad they included POV’s with him and Jace!! • Livia: underrated as hell, so sweet, so caring, so selfless, her charm and sarcasm= gold. • Ty: I AM SO GLAD WE ARE FINALLY STARTING TO SEE T Y B L A C K T H O R N AND HIS TRUE SELF-A M E N. • Dru- her crush on Jaime is fitting for a first crush and I’m glad he gave her the confidence to speak up. I want to hug her literally all the time. • Tavvy- irrelevant but cute. SHIPS: • I surprisingly loved Mark and Emma’s dynamic. Their relationship reminded me of a mundane high school sweetheart kind of relationship, because you can tell they absolutely care about each other, I just don’t see them as anything more than a bromance. I will however agree with the sentiment, "maybe in another life" because maybe, in another series, in another world, they would have been perfect for each other. • Kieran/Mark/Cristina: I find it significant that no choices were made in terms of canon relationships, which I interpret as a canon friendship because if any of them were going to be romantically involved, a decision would be made by now. I enjoy the friendship they have, I surprisingly forgave Kieran, but I do not expect any of the Blackthorns or Emma to forgive him also. His actions in QOAAD will definitely define how I feel about him going forward. • JEMMA: You all know I am 100% a Jemma shipper, but this time around I was glad that their relationship did not overshadow the rest of the book. I liked how private their relationship was, which is a funny word to use because people become more privy to it in LOS and because it was extremely private in LM, but the fact that they were literally in a different part of their country on their own made me all happy. • I am also glad that I got the B&N copy with the extra scene, which I waited to read because it is right after the ending of the book and I did not want to read anything after finishing LOS, lol. • Kitty: No canon romantic relationship yet, still very cute scenes… Ill talk about this in theories. • Kit/Livia: I am glad that Livvy’s first kiss was Kit, and not some random boy who won’t treasure the memory or look back and think “oh she was sweet, it’s a shame what happened to her”. Kit will always treasure the fact that he was Livia’s first kiss, and will cherish the friendship he had with her. It was platonic, but still special. I know people on tumblr were upset with this but I hope by the end of the book they understood. PROFOUND THINGS IN LOS • Lets talk about the fact that Emma Carstairs literally doesn’t cry….. but she cried over Julian literally 400 times in Lord of Shadows. If that doesn’t show you how much she literally loves that boy idk what will. • CLARY SHIPS JEMMA. During their conversation Clary literally says “who I pictured you with [not Mark or Cameron] doesn’t make sense….” This goes back to my question to CC about whether or not Simon knows about Jules and Emma, since he noticed something off during the parabatai ceremony. She responded “he knows something, he just doesn’t know what he knows”. I think the same applies to Clary, maybe she has even had premonitions about it, and that is so so significant. #jemmaisendgame • Kit and Livia and Ty’s friendship: so sweet and pure and is literally the reason why Kit decides to stay. How will Ty and Kit function without their third musketeer? • DRU & JAIME: Thank you Jaime for giving Dru the confidence to confront her family over her role as a Shadowhunter… but the witchlight you left behind that literally portals to another dimension: WTF? WHO IS ASH????? That scene is messed up because it is so short and therefore, subconsciously everyone looks over it because of how chaotic everything else is. I can’t help but feel like this is going to play a MASSIVE role in QOAAD. • Diana & Gwyn: Thank you CC for trans representation and a beautiful story. The fact that Gwyn accepts her wholeheartedly made my chest ache, and I hope that no one will use it against her please please please. • Jules & Emma’s Decision to tell the Inquisitor: Not sure why they did this tbh, but now that Robert is dead, what are their options??? Did he mark it down somewhere? Will they become so irrational that they consider the Seelie Queen’s offer? Livia’s Death • Months ago I received an anon message from someone about Livvy, which literally said that they felt something was going to happen to her and I completely dismissed it…. Thinking we haven’t seen enough of her storyline yet and it was too soon. I AM SO SORRY, and it’s literally all I have been thinking about for days. • Livia was so so selfless, down to her core, the last moments of her life were spent trying to save the people she loves. • I discussed with a mutual that the fact that Annabel did it was both cruel and also extremely fitting. • When you think about it, Livvy was the 21st century version of Annabel. From their appearance, which was remarkably similar, to the way that they treated outsiders taking refuge in their family (Livvy with Kit, Annabel with Malcolm) down to their deaths, both innocents killed trying to protect the ones they love. • The fact that the Mortal Sword shattered to me symbolized the end of the truth and trust within the Clave. • The amount of guilt that each character will carry following these deaths is heartbreaking… • i sincerely hope her death is not tossed to the side, discussed for 150 pages then only mentioned 4-5 times after that because she deserved better, the entire Blackthorn family did, and peace was completely ripped away from them Which brings me to my first theory: I believe there was a reason that Jessamine was introduced to TDA, not only to highlight Kit’s Herondale-ness, but also as a foreshadowing of another character who is not at peace, feels that there is unfinished business, and a group of people needing to be protected: Livia. Because it was made clear in the book that necromancy and raising the dead is forbidden, and because QOAAD takes place a week later, Livvy’s chances of being raised are very very very slim. I sincerely believe that she will come back, but not to life. It would be fitting of her to come back as a ghost (not at first but definitely later in the story) and for her to protect her family, and give Kit and Ty the OK to do whatever they want to do (whether its be a couple or become parabatai, or go to the Scholomance) More theories: • Though I predict a dark Julian, I do not predict a dark/irredeemable Julian, who digs himself into such a big hole that he can’t climb out of it. Remember he has two anchors: his family, and Emma… • The Rosales brothers, especially with their plans to overthrow the Cohort and fool Zara are going to play a massive role in QOAAD. • I think that Jemma are going to have to confide in Jem and Tessa, and they will end up helping Jules and Emma with the parabatai curse. I am also sure they will play a big role in the next book. • Unpopular Opinion: I do not think Clary will die. I know she thinks she will, but CC did say QOAAD is lighter (in regards to themes) than LOS, and I just do not think it would be a lighter book if Clary, a significant character, dies. I think she will become close to death, and people will become concerned, then she will tell Jace of her fears and say yes to his proposal. However, I could very well be wrong!! •i do predict the Cohort being in power for a short amount of time….. because they represent members of our society, I do not think they will be shut down so easily because that’s not realistic. Despite this, hope and love always win. I trust that this will remain true in the next book. • I do predict the end of the Cold Peace, it was never ever a good idea and no one likes it. • I predict that Drusilla will be a hero, now that her older sister has passed away and she has finally decided to step up as a Shadowhunter, I do not doubt that the role she plays will be significant, it just seems to be a reasonable underdog story. • Kitty: parabatai or lovers? An important decision, because Kit does reference his thoughts about being parabatai with Ty, and Ty finally says yes to being parabatai with Livvy. I think it’s a possible “that’s what Livvy would have wanted” trope, but I could also be wrong and think its about as equal of a chance of them becoming lovers. • Who will the new head of the LA Institute be? I sincerely doubt it will go to someone the Blackthorns do not know or trust. They have had so much taken from them, the Institute does not deserve to go next. Possibly Cristina? Will Jules or Emma be of age? Jem or Tessa following the end of the Cold Peace? We have to see! • ASH… I am just frustrated that we do not know more about him… I don’t even have a theory I just needed an excuse to talk about him again. Questions and Theories from my mutuals!!!!! • Anonymous: Its 3 am and I am literally just crying on my bed because of the book. ​ >> Relatable!! I cried hours after I finished because I was so sad. The ending really got me! • Anonymous: Do you think Jaime and Dru are endgame? She is 13 and hes like 17 but he thinks she’s 16. Idk, they seem to have a nice friendship but not a romantic relationship in my opinion.. ​ >> Agreed! I honestly think CC included this first crush idea as a way of introducing Dru’s further character development, not necessarily to introduce them as a couple… But also think about Cecily and Gabriel!!! They were about the same ages at the time, even though that was a different time period… anything is possible, but I do not ship them romantically! • VirginaNewman: I loved LOS, however I was indeed disappointed that Helen + Aline make a debut in the LAST chapter! ​ >> I definitely thought Helen and Aline would play a larger role in LOS, they were barely mentioned, barely had any scenes… I was disappointed by their small role too, but I am interested to see how hard they fight to stay in the next book. Ps- the scene where Aline basically tells Zara to shut her fucking mouth is GOLD. • Betweenshadesoftessagray- Since Robert’s dead, its going to be a race to get that spot, with probably Zara’s father trying to become Inquisior. And since Robert was the one who could help Emma and Julian with the exile thing, they really don’t know what to do with it. I think the powers will continue to grow, and since I think the main battle of QOAAd is going to be a battle where the warlocks and nephilim cannot use their runes/warlock magic, maybe their parabatai magic will still work and that’s how they win. I have already stated that I think there is going to be a battle in QOAAD without being able to use rune magic and the warlocks not being able to use their magic, but this didn’t fit in my other ask I just realized something that made my theory more solid: in the beginning, Zara says she went to Hungary because they were claiming their weapons were not working and she said it was incompetence, so the blight is already spreading not only in Idris but everywhere else. ​ >> This is such a well thought out theory and I wish I could give a formal response but I definitely need to go back, reread, and analyze this… I didn’t even realize the significance of Shadowhunters and warlocks including Magnus losing their powers!! Wow! Is this because of the Black Volume? I definitely think Emma and Julian’s parabatai/love powers will play a huge role in QOAAD and maybe even save the day during this second Dark War. Maybe that’s how they will become heros, their bond will be broken as a reward or something and everyone can live happier ever after? Ty had decided, that he really hated suits. He had never liked them before. They were confining and hot, and scratchy. Very, very scratchy. But now he really hated them. Especially the shoes. The shoes were far to tight and when he had gone to change the shoes, Dru had gotten mad at him. She said that these were the only shoes that matched. “But they’re all black shoes, Drusilla. They all match,” He had tried to argue.

Dru had looked offended and told him to “Buck up and deal with it,” So, Ty supposed he would have too. But he wouldn’t be happy about it, that was for certain. He hated suits and was determined to always hate them and their horrible itchy material for the rest of his life. He scratched his wrist, as if to prove his point to himself. 

Well,

He would hate wearing them. But, he found that he didn’t mind when somebody else wore them. Ty thought he looked rather good in suits. Really good, actually. The suit clung to his muscled arms and flared at his waist. His fair hair slicked back, the ends curling around his ears. Ty kept staring at him. He was cramped in the backseat of the truck with him, so it wasn’t like there was anywhere else he could look at. He didn’t even notice the eyes on him anyway, he was looking out the window. 

Ty tore his gaze away and forced himself to look out his own window, scratching his wrist again. He had an odd feeling in his chest, one that seemed to heat up his neck. It made his heart pound and his palms sweaty. He rubbed his hands furiously against his pants. What is wrong with me? He wondered. Ty licked his lips and swallowed. His throat felt swollen. Was he sick? 

The thought sent a rush of panic through him. He couldn’t afford to be sick right now. They had a job to do tonight. A Downworld party to attend, and information to gain. Not to mention, Ty’s position at the Scholomance was riding on this. Though, he hadn’t told anyone that. They didn’t need any extra stress distracting them tonight. He pressed the back of his hand to his forehead. It definitely felt warm. His whole face felt red and warm. 

Ty rest his head against the glass window pane. The cold from outside pressing in, cooling his face. He closed his eyes against the cold as the truck rattled on down the highway. Dru had the radio on, volume turned up higher than Ty would have liked. But he couldn’t really complain, the only reason Dru was driving was because she and Ty were the only ones who could drive in LA and Ty hated driving more than his sister’s loud music. He scratched his wrist.

He forced himself to take deep breaths, to still his fluttering fingers and his racing mind. He felt his face cool down, he released a breath, his eyes blinking open. His gaze was met with a familiar picture. In the reflection of the window was the face that he thought of most.

Kit Herondale. 

His own head was tossed back against the seat. His eyes forced shut. An almost painful expression on his face, and Ty wondered where it had come from. A moment ago, his face had been a dazzling smile as he chatted away with Dru and Ash in the front seat. There was no trace of that now. Sometimes the gap between Ty and Kit felt enormous. Bigger than the oceans that normally separated them. So big that Kit almost seemed impossible to reach. Ty scratched his wrist.

 Ty watched, in the reflection of the window, as Kit reached up and tugged at his tie. He’d done that a total of seven times during this drive. Ty only knew that because it was the same amount of times that Ty had scratched his wrist. Maybe he wasn’t the only one who hated suits. At least Kit looked good in his. Very good. 

That feeling in his chest started up again. Ty held in a grunt of annoyance. What was wrong with him tonight? He glared at the ceiling. From the corner of his eye, he saw Kit tug at his tie again. Ty turned to look at him, Kit still had his eyes closed so Ty leaned in a little closer. He could see that Kit’s tie was on too tight. The shirt collar wrinkled beneath it. 

“Here,” He said, suddenly. Startling himself a little as Kit jerked open his eyes. “Huh?” He blinked. Ty slid down the seat, twisting his body to face Kit fully. “Your tie, let me help you,” He explained, reaching up to grasp the red, silk tie. The material was soft beneath his fingertips. 

Kit went rigid and still beneath him. Ty felt his heart pounding again. He had the urge to scratch his wrist again. But, instead he focused on the tie in his hands. He made quick work of undoing the knot. He adjusted it’s length before beginning another knot.

Ty realized, rather abruptly, that he was sitting very close to Kit. So close he could feel Kit’s hot breath against him. It sent a tingling sensation through Ty. Like an electric shock through his veins. “Thanks,” Kit cleared his throat. Ty could see that his pained expression was gone. Replaced with a slight quirk of his lips. Ty thought that his smile looked thin, despite his plump, soft looking lips. There was no dimple in the corner of his smile, either. Like there normally would be. Ty didn’t meet his gaze, but he knew the shade of sky blue he would find in Kit’s eyes.

Ty finished the knot, sliding the tie to tighten it. He was sure to leave it looser than before. Ty’s hands smoothed out the wrinkles on the silk tie, then the lapels of Kit’s suit jacket, lingering longer than he needed to. He pulled his hands away, “Don’t worry about it-” 

The truck slammed to a violent stop, sending Ty crashing forward. Right into Kit’s chest. Kit’s arm were swift to grab onto Ty as his body was thrown against him. Ty was barely able to stop his head from colliding with Kit’s. “We’re here!” Dru shouted from the front. Kit let out a curse and a glare at the driver's seat. “Are you okay?” He asked, looking back at Ty, his eyebrows scrunched in concern. 

Oh. Ty thought. I was wrong. He was very wrong. Kit’s eyes weren’t sky blue at all, they were crystal blue. With clusters of silver around the pupil. The blue of the seapools down at the beach of the Institute. Ty’s favorite blue. 

“Ty?” 

Ty shook himself out of his thoughts. “Y-yes.” He stuttered, pushing himself off of Kit and sliding back down the seat. “Let’s, uh,” He cleared his throat. “Let’s go.” He fixed his gaze ahead of himself and climbed out of the truck. Ty brought his hand to his forehead, it was hot again. Maybe he should ask Julian to check on him, after this was all over.

Bad Day's

Just a little thing I wrote, because Kit and Dru have a bromance that needs to be acknowledged. Based on the idea that they call eachother when Kit moves to Devon, and that Kit has depression and maybe Dru does too. And that's okay. Also Tessa is a 10/10 mom.

"What do you do when you have bad days?" She asked, suddenly breaking the silence. 

They were on a call with eachother, both laying on their beds, phones set next to their heads. On opposite sides of the world, yet, right next to eachother.

It had been a comfortable silence, and though Dru's question had been unwarranted, Kit knew what she was asking. He thought about his answer. 

"I sleep alot." He said, honestly. "I stay in bed, dont leave my room. I don't eat. Sometimes I cry." Kit found no reason to lie to his bestfriend. 

"That's not what I meant." Her voice was quiet, she cleared her throat. "How do you make them...better."

"It's hard. Sometimes. Sometimes I sleep for another hour and feel better. Sometimes I eat something and feel better. But, most times, on the really bad days. Tessa will come in my room and lay down next to me. Sometimes we talk, or she talks to me, other times we just lay there. She'll let me sleep for the day as long as I promise to come down for dinner. But then, if it's still bad the next day, Jem will come into my room, and he'll try to convince me to go out with him. If I don't, he and Tessa will make me." He paused.

"I know that sounds mean," he continued, "but that's what helps me. They'll force me to go to the park with Mina, or to the store or on a mission or whatever. And it helps. It distracts me. They tell me how much they love me, and I remember why I still want to be here." Kit smiled a little, because it was true, he did still want to be here. "I call you too. You help. Alot."

There was a silence. "You help too." Dru said. "Thank you." 

Kit remembers a time, before shadowhunters and faries had taken over his world. A time when his world was small and dark. When he thought he knew what was good, or right, or what love was. He knew better now.

He remembered how, then, his bad days would turn into bad weeks. How everything seemed wrong with only moments of good. 

Now, his good days stretched into great weeks. His life, full of love. With only a few bad days and moments once in a while. 

Dru was having one of those bad days, Kit knew she was having them more and more often. He didn't know why, but he knew how it felt when someone asked for a reason. Sometimes there wasn't a reason. He knew that better than anyone. 

"Anytime, Dru." He said, hoping she could see how much he meant it. It hurts to see someone you love have a bad day. One of those days when the world was crashing in, the walls were tumbling down, and your body grew far too tired and weak. 

Maybe it was enough for her to know that, even though they were oceans apart, he was there. So he layed there, feeling close. And he talked. About Mina and his latest adventure. The book he and Tessa where reading. He asked about the recent horror movie she watched, she answered. He could still hear the drowsiness in her voice that she had begun to succumb too, but she pushed through a little. She talked about how cute the actor in it was.

She complained about Tavvy's latest pranks. And she admitted to secretly enjoying the girls night Helen had held for the two of them and Aline. Kit smiled to himself. So they had bad days, that stretched into bad weeks, into bad months, until they couldn't remember how to make a day into a good one. That was okay. They would be okay. Dru was strong, she knew how to find the light at the end of a dark path. And Kit was resourceful, he would find a way there, too.  

It was okay.

Having a bad day was more than okay.
