overleveling my elden ring character specifically for the purpose of getting to see how they look with all the different weapons like i'm a kid customizing their action figure

i started elden ring recently and it's my first fromsoft game played and what i learned is that almost everyone and everything in the world fucking hates you to some degree. random armoured guys hate you. most of the wildlife hates you. all the boss guys hate you. the giant red dog in the magic nerd academy hates you. can't pet it. why is everyone so mean to me 💔

Sorry for the belated reply! I love Haldir, and I wish he got more screen time in the movies!

One song that comes to mind is “Native Tongue” by Switchfoot, about embracing love and trying to guard against darkness. It suits Haldir’s role as a marchwarden and a soldier, and the fact that he knows various languages… Including, of course, the woodland tongue. And it’s got a fun sound!

I also like “Bloom” by The Paper Kites for the Silvan elves. I don’t think Tolkien expressly specified that Haldir is Silvan, but that’s my headcanon. :P

09/04/2023-Day 1 of the Scotland trip 

Pictures taken that day in this set are of: 1. A marvelous Mountain Hare, I was amazed to see a few of these. 2. A reflective view at the stunning Loch Garten a place I love so much. 3. A lovely Lapwing we got a close view of from the minibus at Lochindorb. 4. A Red Grouse by Lochindorb, a beautiful star bird of the trip. 5. Lochindorb. 6. Hoof fungus at RSPB Loch Ruthven. 7. Slavonian Grebe at Loch Ruthven, it was an honour to see them in their gorgeous summer plumage for the first time, seeing this species I love in this way that I never had before was a true highlight of the Scotland trip. 9. Seeing Black Grouse lecking, Crested Tit, a rare Ring-necked Duck at Loch Vaa, Goldeneyes, Goosanders, Red Kite, Buzzard, Goshawk, Lesser Redpoll, Treecreeper, Common Gulls, Oystercatcher, Roe Deer and Brown Hare were other highlights.

Igon vs Igrot

Thinking about some Elden Ring and Liveship Traders parallels recently. Here's one of them. Limited spoilers to one questline of Elden Ring - Shadow of the Erdtree, but gets into some broader spoilers on the piracy plotline for the Liveship Traders part.

So Elden Ring (Shadow of the Erdtree) has Igon. A warrior who talks like a pirate, is a screaming and cursing crazy man, had his leg torn off by a dragon, and offers his severed finger to the player which will allow us to summon his soul. His quest has overtones of cyclical destruction: the drake warriors defeat the dread dragon Bayle, consume the dragon's heart, and are one day overtaken and become the dread dragon themself.

In Liveship Traders it begins with Igrot the Terrible - a pirate whose madness was inflicted upon Kennit, a young boy who he had under his power. After being hardened by the experience and becoming a successful pirate captain himself, Kennit lost a leg to a sea serpent and went through a period of bitter anger over this turn of events. He shortly after this found himself in a position to have power over the boy Wintrow who reminded him of his younger self. Captain Kennit directly acknowledges that his life seems to be coming full circle and he could very easily cause Wintrow to suffer as he had suffered and continue the generational cycle of violence. Even if the nature of the pain that he inflicts on Wintrow is not identical to his own experience, under Kennit's general influence the result could be the same anyways with Wintrow developing into yet another kind of tyrant in time. Also part of Wintrow's own character arc is that he previously had to make a decision to sever his own damaged finger before the festering poison of the injury could infect his whole hand. The finger and the spilled blood were absorbed by the wood of the Liveship which by a quirk of this fantasy setting allowed a piece of his soul to become part of the ship.

And yeah, the leg being bit off by a monstrous creature of some kind is a classic trait of Captain Ahab from Moby Dick. For the other oddly specific stuff about the finger severing and the cycle of violence I'm not so sure. Moby Dick is a story of "man against nature/god" and a man's obsession leading to his personal downfall. Both the example from Elden Ring and Liveship Traders demonstrate that the actions of a single person go beyond personal success or failure and instead have consequences that ripple into the future.

They also recontextualize the concept of "god" - in Elden Ring it's a dragon with a heart that literally gives cursed power and promises the fate that the person who devours it will become the dragon that terrorizes and needs to be put down by the next generation of drake warriors. In Liveship Traders "god" is the ideal of an older and more powerful male role model. Like, eclipsing the success of Igrot by becoming a cutthroat pirate in his own right - the KING of the pirates - is Kennit's "white whale" that he obsesses over.
