In 1798 werd gestart met de bouw van het droogdok Jan Blanken in Hellevoetsluis. In die tijd was Hellevoetsluis een van de twee belangrijkste marinehaven en de marine had een dok nodig voor het onderhoud. Het dok bestond uit twee delen, een voor onderhoud en in het verlengde een voor de bouw van nieuwe schepen. Voor het openen van de sluisdeuren werd een van de eerste stoommachines in Nederland aangekocht. In de jaren 1880 werd de originele sluisdeur vervangen door een imposant exemplaar van geklonken ijzer. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog vertrok de marine definitief en kwam het dok in particuliere handen. Het dok raakte in zwaar verwaarloosde staat, maar werd in 2005 volledig gerenoveerd en is nu te bezoeken. —————— One of the most imposant docks in The Netherlands is Jan Blanken at Hellevoetsluis. At the end of the 18th century the Dutch Navy needed a larger drydock. Hellevoetsluis was the first and a later was build at Den Helder. For opening the large doors one of the first steammachines was bought in England. In the 1880’s the original wooden doors were replaced by the enormous iron door. After the dock had gotten in terrible state a large renovation was done in 2005. In de 19e eeuw veroverde de stoommachine de wereld. Zeilschepen werden vervangen door stoomschepen en in 1868 werd het eerste volledig op stoom aangedreven marineschip in de vaart genomen. “De Buffel” werd in Glasgow door de werf Napiers & soms gebouwd en was een ramschip. Het schip zou vijandelijke schepen tot zinken moeten brengen door deze te rammen met de verstevigde boeg. Er was een geschutskoepel aanwezig, maar deze was vooral geschikt op korte afstanden. Het schip had in deze tijd Den Helder en Hellevoetsluis als thuishavens. De technologische ontwikkelingen en de slechte eigenschappen op zee zorgden ervoor dat het schip snel verouderd was. Het voerde vooral symbolische operaties uit en werd eind van de 19e eeuw al uit de vaart genomen en werd opleidingsschip. Uiteindelijk kwam het in 1974 in Rotterdam terecht waar het van1979tot 2013 als museumschip lag. Hier lag het in de Leuvehaven naast het @maritiemmuseumrotterdam In 2013 is het schip verhuisd naar Hellevoetsluis, waar het ook actieve dienst had gezien. Voor veel Rotterdammers wordt het gemis van het schip nog steeds gevoeld, ondanks dat het nu thuis is gekomen. ———— In 1868 the @koninklijkemarine commissioned its first totally steam driven warship. “De Buffel” was ment to sink ships by ramming them. “De Buffel” was build in Glasgow at Napiers & Sons. Due to fast developments the ship became vulnerable quick. Also it couldn’t manoeuvre very well on open seas. Its missions had to be near the Dutch coasts. In 1874 it retrieved the remains of the famous commander van Speyk in Antwerp. At the end of the 19th century the ship was turned into a school for sailors. In 1979 it opened as a museum in Rotterdam, where it stayed until 2013. Many Rotterdammers feel a special bond with the ship.
