GIVEN: My Thoughts on the Anime and the Movie [SPOILERS]
EDIT 2024: this blog was made back in 2021 and now 3 years later it’s still has me on a chokehold
It's currently 11:46pm and I should be going to bed but I just got up to date with everything in Given and I know that I cannot sleep unless I got my thoughts down about this anime because holy fuck it might be an all time favourite. Also I'm currently listening to the entire OST as I'm writing this blog, this is how you know I'm too deep in the fandom.
This anime gave me so many feels. You see, this is why it's dangerous for a musician to watch a good music anime, it's too relatable, that's why I haven't even began to touch Your Lie In April, and not sure if I ever will. But I will say that Given is probably my favourite music-romance anime out of all the music-romance anime I have watched thus far and I will be drawing lots of comparison between Given and other music-romance anime that I've watched.
PLOT
This anime is for the most part, paced so perfectly. It leaves little clues for you to learn about a character's attributes and their past. There is just the perfect distribution of showing and telling, flashbacks feel natural rather than extended over elongated periods of time. This is where Kono Oto Tomare! paled in comparison. But I do want to talk about the two anime for a quick second. I did like how in Kono Oto Tomare!, music was the fore-theme and romance was secondary because we really got to dive deeper into the difficulties of rehearsals, practice, ensemble coordination etc. Given had romance as the fore-theme that utilised music as a metaphor for complexities of relationships and delved less into the specifics of music itself but relationships between the characters. The metaphors are so perfect though, especially the strings, especially now thinking back when Ue replaced the old snapped strings on the Gibson was symbolic of Mafuyu slowly being able to move on from Yuki.
Not gonna lie, I wished there were slightly more rehearsal scenes where we got to hear excerpts of the main songs leading up to their final epic performance but in the case of Given, I totally can see why the author/director held off on showing the audience any main parts of the musical performance until that final pivotal moment in Episode 9 and also 3/4 in the Given Movie. The musical performances in Given are PURE CATHARSIS, prioritising the emotional release of a everything that was pent-up for ages before it explodes. So in this case, I can respect them holding rehearsal music off until those epic moments. Of course, as a musician, I still wished maybe they still delved a little bit more into the technicalities of music itself, and maybe slightly less reliant on the theme of 'genius'. But for 11 episodes, for what it's worth, they packed so much that short space of time, I really don't have that many complaints.
What I am so absolutely in love with this anime is that it is just the perfect balance of funny, heartfelt, excitement and then amidst the youthfulness of band practise, there is this inherent darkness. I don't know how they do it. While anime like Nana has funny moments, there is a very serious undertone kind of from the get go and you sort of know you're going to be in for an emotional rollercoaster, but with Given it almost creeps up on you and the next thing you know is you are on the verge of tears by Episode 9.
Tumblr media
Dialogue is just so brilliantly written in the show. One of my favourite lines is what they described about loneliness, I think it was "The name of the bus stop. The colour of the sweat shirt I was wearing that day. The phrases and words that was popular to our conversation at that time. They slowly fade away. Ahhh That's loneliness. For the first time that day, I felt it on the stage." Especially those bits in italics, oh my goodness, so true, you forget how you speak to a loved one overtime, this even applies to forgotten friendships. Fuck it hits me deep in the feels man.
CHARACTER
I literally have so much I want to say about every single character in this show, please pray that I'll get to sleep in the next hour. But oh my goodness, the deep and complex characterisation in Given is what makes it completely stand out from any other romance anime. It literally makes my heart physically ache so much.
Given
Let's start with Mafuyu, once again tying to my earlier point, he looks like such a harmless cinnamon roll that I was not emotionally prepared for the darkness that actually resided inside of him. He is such a well-written character, he is emotionally repressed due to his abusive father and every time he seemed to express his emotion, something bad happens, especially looking back at his outburst with Yuki. In a sense, I think he has anxious attachment style from experiencing abandonment and abuse from his father, hence he had that fight with Yuki. He started music because he couldn't let go of Yuki, because of grief, but then through music, he found himself and a safe space for him to express himself without negative consequences, he found joy under the stage lights. And he found Uenoyama, who supported him no matter what. The only thing I think I wished the anime included was just a short 10 second scene where he was by himself and maybe had a monologue with Yuki. For a childhood best friend turned ex that passed away, I felt like just one more scene between the two of them, just needed a bit more closure, not a flashback but something a bit more present, like Mafuyu instead of carrying the Gibson in front of his arms, he carries it on his back. It will not only show that he has overcome his loneliness, but it then becomes a much clearer sense of moving forward because I did feel like from Mafuyu wrapping up his grief with Yuki to him going out with Ue was a bit too quick. I'm just thinking back to Full Moon wo Sagashite where the main girl literally was in depression for so long when she found out that her loved one died (a little too long), but it's only natural though and then when she slowly realised her love for the main guy, it felt a lot more resolute and grounded. I also really love how although softspoken and introverted, Mafuyu is surprisingly bold, especially when asking Ue out and Ue to stay when he's sick. This boy has guts! Also this boy is surprisingly perceptive as well, especially in the movie!
Uenoyama, he's such a tsundere but in the most wholesome way possible. He's a very kind person which I think is what made Mafuyu like him. Also I love the subversion compared to most other BL anime where the more 'masculine guy' is more aloof and cold but Ue is just gay panicking throughout the entire anime and I honestly live for it. I love how he recognises his jealousy, helps Mafuyu finish the song that technically Mafuyu and Yuki started together to give him closure, kind of an idiot for kissing Mafuyu right after such an emotional song but thankfully and humorously realises that it was kind of wrong and is otherwise for the most part, really caring and really encouraging. We stan a healthy shounen-ai relationship. OMFG, that "It's mutual" scene was so freaking hilarious, it reminded me of all of the Kyoko demons making decisions from Skip Beat!
Ue's mental farewell party vs. Kyoko's demons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yuki, oh my freaking goodness, my heart aches for that boy. I know we only have 11 episodes, but I really wanted to know more about how he became the way he did and how he got into music. He's definitely Robin Williams sort of character, sunshine on the outside and darkness on the inside and hints of mental illness were scattered throughout the flashbacks. To be honest, I really really loved Yuki and Mafuyu's dynamic, the little moments they shared are so incredibly precious but mental illness was the ultimate killer and it's just so sad because we see this happen way too much even in real life. I like their dynamic so much because they seem to be in their own little world but I think Ue brings a new fire in Mafuyu that can be shared with the rest of the world. But to be honest, if Yuki came back by some miracle of the divine, I honestly wouldn't know who I would ship more. But in my little memory bubble, in my little time capsule, I'd just want Yuki and Mafuyu to exist for a little longer.
Hiiragi also deserves a special mention even though he is a side character. I really enjoyed the author's/director's inclusion of the paralysis of a friend dealing with a someone going through mental illness and someone dealing with anxious attachment style. Him asking for forgiveness and resuming a friendship with Mafuyu is just the wholesome friendship we need more of in today's society. The thing is, it's hard, it's hard to support people with mental illness! It's even harder when they are in their own little world, it feels like there is not much one can say. I really commend on the author and director for tackling such complex topics.
Given Movie
Haruki is just a cinnamon roll, he just deserves the entire world. I don't care what anyone says. His kindness is boundless. He is literally mum. The scene where Akihiko made a coerced non-consensual move on Haruki honestly made me so uncomfortable and is probably what made me rate the movie slightly lower than the anime. My heart absolutely ached for Haruki, when he ran away crying when Akihiko emotionally barred him away even when it was Haruki everytime that offer him a place to stay and formed the band with him when he was on the verge of quitting music. Haruki deserves a Nobel Peace Prize or something, there is no purer bean on the planet. Really great for him that things worked out but I swear in Aki hurts him in any way later on I SWEAR TO GOD....
Akihiko is interesting. At first, I really disliked his character. A clear womaniser, a character with a clear inferiority complex that literally was the main cause of the break-up between him and Ugetsu. And then I realised the reason I really disliked his character was because I saw a bit of myself in him. The moment the Given Movie started, I thought to myself "Oh No.... I'm really going to relate to the love Hate that comes from falling for someone that's in the music industry". This love-hate or I guess inferiority complex is so incredibly painful and so relatable. You admire someone so much but because you also love music so much and as a musician, the line between where you start and where music starts is very blurred, your identity and music is almost as one, your emotion is the emotion in your music so when someone's better than you in music, it's like someone repeatingly stabbing you in your heart but at the same time, music is something you love, so you feel so much awe and wonder when you hear someone play music so beautifully. This self-contradiction that Akihiko feels cannot be put into words. As annoyed as I am at him because he literally sort of caused Ugetsu to realised that Akihiko is losing his passion for music because of all these conflicting emotions, it's just such a relatable thing for me as a composer. Also the very fact that Ugetsu seems to travel alot for work probably also made Akihiko very lonely and things just got more and more toxic as they were unable to pull away from one another.
What I absolutely loved in the end was Akihiko's change, he hurt Haruki so much, he lashes out when he's hurt and acts selfish and I REALLY appreciated that he asked for consent before touching Haruki in the final confession scene. That was so brilliant. It's really great that he was able to find joy and love in music again. I'm currently also trying to find joy and love in music as well so I hope that I can also find someone who can be on this journey with me.
And finally we have Ugetsu. My heart aches for him so so so much. This success and brilliance of a great musician is a tier of loneliness that very few will understand. Ugetsu loves Akihiko and music but he saw that his very presence was causing so much pain for Akihiko's self-esteem so he tried to tear away. But he didn't have the guts to completely do so which is why they just keep hurting each other even post-break up. Even though he acts aloof, this boy just wants what was best for Akihiko but when he finally left, it hurt like hell, but Mafuyu's song made him realise that he'll be ok. Fuck man, this is unfortunately the life of many musicians, music is such a large part of our livelihood, we chase it and chase it until all of our loved ones can no longer keep up with us so we let them go and watch them from afar with a soft smile. Our memories of those times spent together become memorialised in the music that we create. And in turn, it inspires and brings joy to others while we watch from afar. That's how it feels like to me to be a musician sometimes. Sometimes I wonder if the sacrifice is really worth it.
Tumblr media
SOUND
OP and ED grew on me. By the end of the anime I really liked them. But of course the stand out music is the entire OST of the anime. Once again I think Given is the perfect example of "simple is perfect", like if you carefully listen to some of the tracks, it's so simple but it allows your to really focus on the dialogue and the pacing and what the characters are trying to tell you rather than Kono Oto Tomare! where the music often felt too dramatic and emotionally prescriptive. But I hear a few violin harmonics and careful treatment of certain main themes so Given's music is definitely well carefully thought out crafted provides such a relaxing yet sometimes hauntingly nostalgic and painful atmosphere.
The voice acting of Uenoyama and Haruki are so adorable when they gay panic and I've got to give it to Mafuyu for wonderfully showing the progression of an amateur to a good singer.
ANIMATION
Gorgeous gorgeous colours. Especially all of the scenes of the band practice rooms and the stage performances, the night scenes. I don't know the budget for this anime but I could definitely tell a lot of care went into any musical performances whether on the violin or on stage.
Sometimes I saw a bit of inconsistency with the linework in some close-up and far-away shots of characters but this is so minute I literally don't even care.
This anime is I seriously believe, revolutionary in its genre. I've never seen such healthy shounen-ai representation in an anime before and such wonderfully complex characters. This will be a top favourite, I know I'll be rewatching this alot and referring a lot of my friends to watch this. What an incredibly underrated anime.

What kind of anime would Starish and Quartet Night watch
A/N: Generally I tried to assign a different type of anime to each member, but there would still be some overlaps between some members! I thought it would be fun to imagine what kind of series each member would enjoy watching! Thank you for reading!
STARISH
Tumblr media
Otoya: Otoya would enjoy a good sports anime, being an athletic person himself, he would enjoy watching the matches unfold and would probably sit at the edge of his chair during the tense moments. He’s also the kind of person who would easily get attached to the characters and might shed a tear or two when the third years retire.
Examples: Haikyuu, Kuroko no Basket, Free!
Tumblr media
Tokiya: Tokiya probably watches anime that have been inspired by books or authors. He loves digging out the little references the series makes to a certain literature or author. While he doesn’t limit himself to a specific genre, Tokiya enjoys a good action packed anime with many plot twists and surprises. Cecil joins him when he watches Magi.
Examples: Magi, Bungo Stray Dogs
Tumblr media
Natsuki: Natsuki loves animes that are cute and happy. Watching anime helps him relax and he especially loves series that have animals involved. He actually joins Reiji to watch Food Wars but his cooking still involves him throwing in the weirdest and most random ingredients (e.g the squid with peanut butter)
Examples: Cute High Earth Defense Club Love!, Hamtaro, Pokemon
Tumblr media
Masato: Masa loves anime that has Japanese elements in it (spirits, instruments, sports etc). He gets all nostalgic while watching them. Like Tokiya, he does not limit himself to a particular genre but he leans towards more light hearted anime series. (He was once tricked into watching Food Wars by Reiji saying it was a cooking anime, but was scarred after the first episode).
Examples: Tsurune, Chihayafuru, Kono oto Tomare
Tumblr media
Ren: Ren doesn’t mind the genre, as long as he can get a good laugh out the anime he’s down. To him, the more unrealistic anime, the better. While he may occasionally watch a couple of romance series, nothing beats a good comedy anime. Also lowkey learnt how to flirt from watching Ouran.
Examples: Sakamoto desu ga?, Ouran High School Host Club, The Devil is a Part Timer
Tumblr media
Syo: It’s no surprise that Syo is a fan of action series. He loves animes that involve fighting scenes or superpowers. His extensive knowledge of fighting terms and techniques basically comes from all the series he watches and also loves thinking about what kind of superpower he would like to have if he was in that particular anime’s universe.
Examples: Boku no Hero Academia, Noragami, Naruto
Tumblr media
Cecil: Boy’s a softie who’s into coming of age/slice of life anime. He enjoys watching anime which involves romance between high school students as he feels that it’s very pure, and he’s also curious about the Japanese high school life. He’s also interested in idol animes and is a huge fan of Nagi from Idolish7.
Examples: Maid Sama, Kimi ni Todoke, Idolish7
QUARTET NIGHT
Tumblr media
Reiji: Reiji is the kind of person to hop between genres and ends up watching a pretty wide range of anime, but his favourite genre is sports since he loves watching sports matches in general. Like Otoya he also gets all soft when the third years retire. He also actually watches Food Wars partially for the cooking as well as the more… mature scenes.
Examples: Food Wars, Prince of Tennis, Number 24
Tumblr media
Ranmaru: Ranmaru enjoys a good horror/gore anime and is the kind of person who wouldn’t flinch at the sight of blood. Something about this genre just draws him in (he promises he isn’t a sadist). He probably asked Reiji to join him one day and the poor dude couldn’t stomach his dinner for the rest of the night.
Examples: The Promised Neverland, Another, Deadman Wonderland
Tumblr media
Ai: Ai likes to watch tear-jerking animes (he believes it helps him express himself better and learn how to feel emotions). While he rarely sheds a tear, he will definitely feel his heart clutching at the sadder scenes. Everytime he feels something different, he notes it down and does research to see what emotion he was feeling.
Example: Your Lie in April, Clannad, Anohana
Tumblr media
Camus: Camus would indulge in animes related to royalty. Occasionally he would point out any flaws’ in the series (like ‘there aren’t supposed to be this few guards at the entrance’ or ‘there are too many servants in this tiny room’). He once peered over Ai’s shoulder when he was watching a tragic death scene and he shed a tear but refused to admit it.
Examples: The Royal Tutor, Black Butler

Fall 2019 Anime Worth Watching
Wondering what anime to watch now that the jam packed summer season is over? Never fear, we’re into the fall, and there’s even more great shows this season! It’s my last rec list of the year so we’re in the home stretch now!
Full disclaimer, this season is packed with great shows, but a lot of these are not available on Crunchyroll...so here’s a link to a list of where you can watch everything legally on streaming! And I’ll but an (*) by everything that IS on Crunchyroll.
And here’s my recs for every season this year:
Summer 2019
Spring 2019
Winter 2019
And here’s my master list for 2020
New shows!
Chuubyou Gekihatsu-Boy (Outburst Dreamer Boy): A comedy in which a normal girl just wants a peaceful high school life, but finds herself surrounded by a group of ridiculous, overly dramatic boys who are all part of the “hero club” who try to make her school life better by helping her make friends. This is all well and good, but all the boys are delusional in one way or another. For example, one thinks he and his friends are basically Power Rangers, and another is obsessed with fabricating dramatic fake anime backstories for himself. It’s Ouran High School Host Club without the hosting. It’s absolutely hilarious, but it’s really flying under the radar because it’s not on Crunchyroll.
Tumblr media
Kabukichou Sherlock: A surprisingly comedic modern version of Sherlock Holmes that takes place in the seedier portions of Japan in which a bunch of the city’s quirky detectives try and hunt down Jack the Ripper. I was not expecting this to be nearly as good as it was. The characters are great, Mrs. Hudson is a transvestite cabaret singer, the soundtrack is bomb, it’s an original anime by Production I.G. AND SHERLOCK EXPLAINS HIS DETECTIVE PROCESS THROUGH MYSTERY SOLVING RAKUGO!!!!
Tumblr media
Babylon: NO, NOT FATE BABYLONIA! This is a mystery/thriller involving a case of illegal clinical research for a pharmaceutical company that leads down a rabbit hole full of murder, suicide, and political intrigue. IT’S LIKE DEATH NOTE AND MONSTER HAD A BABY AND IT’S FREAKING AMAZING! I haven’t been this interested in a mystery/crime anime since Erased. The first episode will definitely leave you...hanging…. The only problem is it’s not on Crunchyroll, so I have a feeling most people won’t know about it because it’s on freaking Amazon Prime!
Tumblr media
Hoshiai no Sora (Stars Align): A coming of age sports anime in which a boys soft tennis team sucks so bad that the school will disband them if they don’t win a tournament. And the team captain is so desperate for serious members, he literally pays his childhood friend who recently moved back into town to play on the team. And said childhood friend has an incredibly interesting backstory and struggling family life that ropes you in right away. How is soft tennis different from regular tennis? No clue, but this show is awesome! You can tell by the first episode it is going to be a great coming of age story, with more mature themes of abuse and class difference.
And it’s not the only sports anime with Sora in the title...
Tumblr media
*Ahiru no Sora (Sora the Duck): Another sports anime, in which a short, spikey haired boy wants to play basketball (yeah yeah very original) but discovers that his high school basketball team is full of punks! It’s basically what would happen if Izuku Midoriya wanted to be a basketball player. The first few minutes are basically every sports anime you’ve ever seen, BUT it really lives up to its potential by the end of the first episode. It has a likable protagonist, good animation, and the female characters all wear realistic clothes to play basketball in! If you’re a piece of sports anime trash like me, this is definitely the show for you!
Tumblr media
No Gun Life: In a detective noir world where everyone has basically become a cyborg, a guy with a gun for a head works to uncover the plans of an evil organization.  That’s it, that’s the whole thing. It’s made by Madhouse AND IT’S A CYBORG WITH A GUN FOR A HEAD! What else do you need?!
Tumblr media
Beastars: IT’S JUST ANIME ZOOTOPIA! I’m not even kidding. It’s a school based mystery involving anthropomorphic animals who are faced with the murder of one of their classmates and the disruption of the peaceful coexistence of all types of animals in the school. It involves the whole predator vs prey dynamic and how appearances are deceiving, all with a jarringly serious tone considering everyone’s an animal. The only thing that doesn’t sit right with me is the use of 3D animation...which I notoriously despise no matter how great the show is. But even I am willing to put aside my hatred to keep watching this anime. The characters are interesting, it’s shot really creatively, and I love how ridiculously seriously it takes itself. Apparently it’s going to be on Netflix at some point.
Tumblr media
*Shin Chuuka Ichiban (True Cooking Master Boy): It’s Food Wars’ less porny sibling that takes place in 19th century China, where a young boy named Mao is a master chef who travels around spreading his love for cooking! This is a reboot/continuation of an anime based on a manga from the 90s so there’s a really fun retro art style that’s nice to see updated. Apparently it picks up in the middle of the original story, but I haven’t felt like it’s necessary to see the source material to enjoy it or understand it. Also the soundtrack is bomb! It’s a great shounen to watch if you want more cross-cultural cooking anime that’s not straight up porn in your life, and it will definitely make you hungry!
Tumblr media
Next seasons and Continuations!
And don’t forget the summer leftovers, and some shows are getting continuations!
*Chihayafuru season 3: This is an incredibly fantastic underrated sports/club anime about a girl named Chihaya who struggles to find members for her karuta club after her best friend who made her fall in love with the game moves away. Never heard of “karuta”? It’s a physically and mentally challenging traditional Japanese game involving 100 poems written on cards that the players must memorize and locate before their opponent….it makes more sense when you see it I promise. This show is goddamn amazing, with incredibly realistic characters, an amazing game that most people don’t know about, gorgeous animation. It’s hilarious, it’s dramatic, it’s sad, and it’s uplifting all at once.
This doesn’t premier until October 23, (so you’ve got time to binge the first 2 seasons!) but this is by far my most anticipated show of the season and quite possibly the entire year! I’VE BEEN WAITING SO MANY YEARS FOR ANOTHER SEASON, AND I’M SO PSYCHED!
Tumblr media
Kono Oto Tomare (Stop this Sound) season 2: Speaking of club related anime, in case you missed the first season earlier this year, this is an anime about a boy who tries to recruit members for his high school koto club after all his senpais graduate. What’s a koto club you ask? It’s a large Japanese string instrument that no one cares about or plays anymore of course! Their club is endearingly terrible, with literally only one competent person on the team, but they’re aiming for nationals anyway, because...of course they are. This show seems pretty textbook at first, but it really grows on you the further you get. There are great character dynamics, it’s fun, it’s sweet, and there’s cool music that people don’t hear a lot of! If you like sports or club focused anime, give this one a chance!
Tumblr media
*Dr. Stone: An action adventure in which all of humanity is mysteriously turned to stone one day. When a genius high school boy named Senku and his….not so genius friend Taiju awaken 3,700 years in the future, the two must rebuild civilization and turn the world back to normal with the power of science! I know pretty much everyone is watching this already, but I just want to reiterate how amazing it is. It is mysterious, educational, hilarious, and it really makes you think about civilization as we know it today. It was one of the best (if not the best) new show of the summer, and I’m so glad it’s getting a full run!
Tumblr media
Vinland Saga: THE VIKING ANIME IS GETTING A FULL RUN!!!!!!!! In case you missed this gem in the summer, it’s a historical drama about a young boy named Thorfinn and his journey to avenge his father’s death and become a great warrior. And it’s all while traveling with his enemies through Northern Europe. It’s a fantastic dark, realistic story in a historical setting that filled the void left by Dororo. Plus it’s animated by Wit, so it looks beautiful. The music is great, the characters are intriguing, the story is interesting, AND IT HAS AN AMAZING ANTAGONIST! It has hype written all over it, so I’m pumped for the rest of the season! Unfortunately, you can only find it legally on Amazon Prime, so that’s why no one’s watching it.
Tumblr media
*Fire Force: The (unfortunately timed) action/drama where fire fighters with super powers must protect Tokyo from people who are spontaneously combusting and uncover the evil rooted within their own organization. It’s made by the same person who created Soul Eater, and it definitely shows. The animation is high flying and out of this world. It’s worth watching for the action alone. But be warned, the plot and characters are it’s biggest weakness. It will jump between gratuitous fanservice and hijinks and then rocket into moral dilemmas and disturbing situations with no warning. BUT I still like watching it for the action, and in these later episodes the plot has steered itself back on track a lot more, and I’m way more interested in where the story is going now. I’m hoping that means the second half will give us a better sense of the characters. It also has a top tier muscular waifu!
Tumblr media
*My Hero Academia season 4: I’m sure everyone’s already going to be watching MHA, but I guess I’d have my anime fan badge revoked if I didn’t at least mention this one. I may not read the manga, but I know this arc is going to be a good one! I firmly believe this will be a modern classic, so if you haven’t checked it out yet, it’s really worth watching.
Tumblr media
And that’s it for this season. I’ll probably do a list at the end of the year of my top shows of 2019, but otherwise, see you in the winter of 2020!

“Were you waiting long, Ousuke?” Asano asks as she exits the convenience store, a plastic bag in hand. He’s seated in the same place he was before she entered; on the pavement, a few feet away from the store entrance. He looks up at the sound of his name.
“Nope! You were only in there for a few minutes, I think.” He gives her one of his usual smiles and flashes his phone screen at her. She sees rows of notifications on the lock screen—not surprising. “Well, I kept busy.”
“That’s good. Anyway, I got this for you.” She rummages into her bag and pulls out something in a small wrapped package.
He blinks.
“It’s an ice pop—you didn’t have to come with me today,” she explains, holding the treat out towards him. “I was just running an errand for my mom.”
He looks at her wide-eyed, then accepts the sweet from her with a grin. “Well, why wouldn’t I want to come with you, Asa-chan?”
“Hm, I don’t know, maybe because you just sat outside the entire time?” she observes. She naturally finds herself taking a seat on the ground next to him. “You could’ve just went straight home, y’know.”
“Oh well,” he hums, bumping shoulders with her. She lets out a soft laugh. He unwraps the ice pop and snaps it in half, giving her the other portion. She hesitates for a moment before taking the stick from him. He beams, “Thanks, Asa-chan.”
The melon-flavoured ice pop is sweet on her lips, refreshing on a hot day after koto practice.
She bumps shoulders with him once again and he turns to look at her; she gives him a smile.
He smiles back, not like he usually does these days—something soft, real.
She feels her heart thump.
-
She can sense eyes on her all throughout club practice the day after. Not just her, though; she knows that people are looking next to her too, at Ousuke. That is usually the norm—he’s what ties the ensemble together, after all—but something about it today feels different. It’s a bit unnerving, but not distracting enough to break her concentration while she plays her koto. Still, it’s bothersome.
Once club activities wrap up and everyone starts to disperse, she turns to Ousuke. “Uh, don’t you think everyone’s acting kind of strange?”
“What do you mean?” he asks, his tone casual. She can see that his focus is on packing away his things and not the topic at hand.
“I don’t know, people have been looking at me—us—funny all practice.” Asano purses her lips into a frown as she removes her koto picks from her fingers. “And one of the third-years made me switch spots with her today for no reason. Said something about you—about having me sit next to you? What’s up with that?”
He looks at her then. “Huh. I guess you’re right. Don’t know the reason why, though. Does sitting next to me bother you, Asa-chan? I’m hurt.”
“That’s not what I meant and you know it.” She rolls her eyes. “Just, everything else. It feels off for some reason.”
“… Does it really bother you?” he asks again, and she hears the way his tone changes. Less playful, she realizes.
“No, not too much. It’s a bit weird, but it’s fine. Nothing to really be concerned about—”
“—Sorry to interrupt, but some of us were wondering…,” one of their clubmates suddenly steps into their conversation. Asano recognizes her as the third-year that asked to swap seats with her earlier. Next to her stands Kou, her gaze as stern as ever.
Ousuke’s face brightens when he sees the upperclassman approach. “What’s up?” he asks, his voice back to its typical chipper lilt.
“Ah, how do I say this…” She pauses for a moment. Asano makes note of the frown on Kou’s face as their clubmate speaks. “I’ll just get straight to it: are you two dating?”
“W-What?” Asano sputters immediately, suddenly feeling hyperfocused. “Why would you think that?”
People have teased them about their relationship for years, but the Meiryou koto club has always known that they are nothing more than childhood friends. Instinctively, Asano’s gaze moves towards Ousuke to gauge his reaction. He smiles, still, like it’s nothing.
Right, it’s nothing.
“Hmm, well a few of us saw you two after school yesterday, and it was like, you were really close together. Seemed like the inevitable,” she answers matter-of-factly. “And it felt like that kind of mood—”
Asano mutters, “—Just because we’ve been friends for a long time—”
“—Plus, you guys look good together,” she finishes.
The room falls silent for a second. For some reason, the words she wants to say are stuck in her throat and she can’t—she can’t look at him.
“Well, thanks, but Asa-chan and I are just friends,” Ousuke replies simply, cutting into the awkward atmosphere. As he always does, so naturally.
Asano tries not to think about the way his voice drops, just barely, when he says friends.
“Oh, well, I guess it was just our misunderstanding.” The third-year shrugs her shoulders nonchalantly.
“Sorry for bothering you two,” Kou finally speaks up. Her eyes follow Ousuke more than anyone else.
“No, don’t worry about it,” Asano assures the other girl, forcing a smile on her lips. “This happens sometimes, so it’s not a big deal. It’s definitely not the first time people have mistaken us for… well, more than just friends.”
“Regardless, I’ll make sure to correct the others; we shouldn’t have rumours like this spreading around the club,” Kou continues with a nod of her head. “See you both tomorrow.”
The two girls depart with those words, leaving Asano and Ousuke alone in the clubroom. She doesn’t know what to say then—what is there to say that they haven’t already said in the past? They’ve tread and retread over this enough times that she’s lost count. Instead, she directs her attention to putting away her instrument. Ousuke follows her lead, continuing where he left off before the conversation with their clubmates.
They finish in silence.
She moves to his side once everything is cleaned up. She doesn’t need to say a single word; he slings his backpack over his shoulder and gives her a quick nod. They head towards the exit together.
“Hm, remember when we were younger? Didn’t people used to make fun of us for being together?” Ousuke eventually speaks, taking a pause.
She stops next to him, unsure of where the conversation is heading. “Yeah, it was whatever. Dumb.”
“Now people are saying we look good together. Weird, huh,” he says with a smile that doesn’t look weirded out at all.
“I mean, we were kids back then. It was a long time ago,” she reasons. “Things are different now, anyway.”
He gives her a thoughtful look. “I don’t think things are that different now.”
“What do you mean?” She narrows her eyes pointedly. “You gotta admit, you’re not the innocent little Ousuke-kun you used to be; I don’t need to be holding your hand all the time anymore.”
“I wouldn’t mind.” He flashes her a cheeky grin, which she scoffs at, before he continues, “Anyway, I meant that we’re still neighbours, still friends. We’re still playing koto, Yocchan’s still our teacher, and we’re still walking to school together. It’s all kind of the same, isn’t it?”
“… I guess,” she relents. He’s not wrong, she can’t really disagree with any of those points—
“And I still love Asa-chan,” he proclaims, suddenly throwing his arms around her.
“Hey! Do you want me to beat you up?” she protests, wriggling in his grasp in an attempt to escape the impromptu hug. “Everyone’s gonna misunderstand again, y’know?”
“It’s fine; no one’s here anymore.” He laughs, but doesn’t move.
It  is different, she thinks, because he’s bigger than her now, taller. She fits into his arms and her head rests neatly against his chest.
Her body goes still.
“I love Asa-chan,” he says again, voice quieter.
She feels her heart thump.
“… I know.”
They stay like that for who knows how long; she’s not counting, she can’t keep track, she can’t think straight.
All she can think about is the way his arms envelop her, how he holds her close like a fleeting, whispered declaration. Like the way he holds her hand as though he doesn’t want to let go, as though they’re children again, as though they’re discovering koto for the first time.
He releases her then, abruptly turning his body away from her. She can’t see his face.
“We should probably leave now,” he says simply, “before it gets dark out.”
Her gaze falls onto his back, shoulders broader than she last remembers.
“Right,” she agrees, yet she thinks she wouldn’t mind.
Because in the dark, he won’t be able to see the blush that’s risen to her own face.
Maybe, she realizes, there are still things that can be said.

ADazzlingGirl’s 2019 Top 10 Anime
Hey! I did a “top 5 anime list” last year, and this year has had some great anime that I’ve really enjoyed, so I wanted to share my favourites with you all and maybe help anyone who wants recommendations for anime to watch! As I did last year, I’m not including new seasons of anime that have already aired (such as One Punch Man S2, Mob Psycho S2, BNHA S4, etc) or remakes (Fruits Basket, Dororo), because while I enjoyed these anime, I want to give the spotlight to new series. I’m also not including movies. Also I’m not putting this list in any particular order, as I can’t really decide which shows I’ve liked more.
Carole and Tuesday
Tumblr media
Basically the only music I listened to this year was that from Carole and Tuesday. The show is about two girls who live in the future on Mars, who want to make music. The first half of the show focuses more on a talent show for them to get recognised as artists, while the latter half focuses on familial and political problems. The characters are adorable and the music IS SO GOOD!
The Promised Neverland (Yakusoku no Neverland)
Tumblr media
TPN is so good if you’re looking for a suspenseful, gripping show. I’m sure most people know the plot by now, but without spoiling it, it’s about a group of children in an orphanage who find out the dark secret of the world outside their house. The characters are so good, and I immediately read the manga soon after finishing the anime, so I’m really excited for season two next year!
Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba)
Tumblr media
First of all, this anime is GORGEOUS. It’s a shounen show with excellent fight scenes, mixed in with many silly and funny scenes. The show is about a pair of siblings, Tanjiro and Nezuko. Nezuko is turned into a demon, and Tanjiro is trying to find a way to turn her back into a human. I’m caught up with the manga for this show too (which is a surprise since I don’t really read much manga), which is heartbreaking but also great.
Dr Stone
Tumblr media
I put off watching this anime for ages despite my friends nagging me to watch it, but I finally did and I’m definitely glad! A strange phenomenon causes every human on earth to become encapsulated in stone for thousands of years, until a science-genius boy (Senku) breaks out, and attempts to rebuild science from the stone age. The show teaches you science in a fun way, and the process of Senku gaining allies for his “science kingdom” is fun to watch.
Given
Tumblr media
Given is an adorable LGBT anime that revolves around four guys forming a band and performing, each with their own struggles. The portrayl of LGBT is not just fanservice as it is in many other series, and it deals with topics such as suicide and moving on from past lovers.
Sarazanmai
Tumblr media
This show is absolutely batshit crazy. But hilarious. And maybe will also break your heart by the end. It’s great. I most definitely traumatised my anime society showing them the first episode but it was worth it. It’s about 3 boys who stumble upon the prince of the kappa kingdom (a Japanese mythical creature that’s kind of like a frog - but don’t tell Keppi that), get turned into kappas themselves, and have to pull people’s desires from their buttholes while singing. Yep. Don’t ask. The show has LGBT representation, as one of the boys likes his friend, and there’s gay otters. Just. Don’t question anything if you want to keep your sanity.
My Roommate is a Cat (Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue.)
Tumblr media
My Roommate is a Cat is a calming anime about a man (Subaru) with social anxiety who doesn’t like to leave his house (sound relatable? ;)). He ends up adopting a stray cat (Haru) who takes care of him more than he does her, and it’s really adorable. Half the episode is told from Subaru’s point of view, and the other from Haru’s, as she tries to get her idiot human to eat and sleep. It’s not super action packed, but I would recommend for happy fluffy feels.
Stop This Sound! (Kono Oto Tomare!)
Tumblr media
This show has actually come out with two seasons this year, the second season airing currently (winter 2019). Kono Oto Tomare is about a high school music club for a traditional Japanese instrument called the Koto. The show shows the struggles of the different student’s situations, as well as allowing you to listen to the beautiful songs from the koto.
Stars Align (Hoshiai no Sora)
Tumblr media
This anime technically isn’t finished yet as I’m writing, but I’m still putting it in this list. I initially thought this was just a typical high school sports anime, but the ending of the first episode immediately proved me wrong. While the focus is a boy’s soft tennis team, the anime explores family problems of the members, such as parents who are abusive or overprotective. There is also some real good LGBT portrayl, with a non-binary member of the club who discusses their feelings about their gender.
Vinland Saga
Tumblr media
This is another anime that isn’t yet finished, and another that a friend recommended to me. I wasn’t sure about the first few episodes, as the main character is a little bratty child who kind of annoyed me, but it’s definitely gotten better as the episodes have gone on. The show is about Vikings, where a boy’s father is killed, and he swears to get revenge by growing up and learning to fight under his father’s killer. I would recommend if you enjoy animes with lots of fighting.
And that’s ten! I feel that I watched more seasonal anime this year, but it still doesn’t feel like I watched very much anime in general as I’ve been busy with uni and I’m currently on a year abroad. But the anime I have watched have been really great. Other mentions I wanted to make were Enen no Shoubutai (although I don’t like the oversexualising of the girls in it) and Run With the Wind (Kaze ga tsuyoku fuiteiru).
Add me on MyAnimeList, I love having a look at other people’s lists for recommendations! https://myanimelist.net/animelist/ADazzlingGirl And merry christmas/happy holidays!

My Top 5 anime from Funimation this year!
#1 Fruits Basket 2019, no surprise here. It’s wholesome (usually) and packed with feels and drama. You walk away from each episode feeling a bit better about things. Only FruBa can heal people the way it does, and I can’t wait for more.
#2 Fairy Gone WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS ANIME?! It’s got a solid plot, likeable characters and well designed outfits for everyone that aren’t disgustingly fan-service pandering. I beseech everyone to give this anime a shot! Everyone has their own motivations and agenda and the show refrains from spelling it out. If you’re quick on the uptake you’ll scream at your computer to warn the characters, and if not you get dragged into the plot twists.
#3 Kono oto Tomare: The Sounds of Life is a great little slice of school life about a music club for the Koto. It’s dramatic, funny, and the cast has you cheering on each of them as they struggle their present day shortcomings and their past selves. The anime even devotes enough time to the big competition performances so you can fully enjoy the music showcased.
#4 Okay this made the list because I’ve been loving the manga, and I expect great things from the anime!
#5 Fire Force is back to what we loved (?) about Soul Eater. Great fights and fan service! I do hope the characters get further development but for now it’s plain old fun to watch. I binged 5 episodes of it and then decided if I wanted another one, I had to watch it while running on my treadmill. So, thank you Fire Force for lighting a fire under my butt and get me exercising!
