Do you think Koushirou x Mimi would be more plausible in an alternate timeline where they didn’t have much contact after 1999 until they’d both graduated from college and had time to mature?

I came up with a bunch of AUs where various posthumous characters are still alive, one of which involves Koushirou’s biological parents. Since Koushirou’s life would have taken a different direction from the very beginning, he probably would not end up marrying the same person as his counterpart, but I didn’t want to come up with yet another OC so I just used Mimi.

(He still goes to the Digital World in 1999 in this AU, he just doesn’t live anywhere near Odaiba and therefore isn’t as close to the rest of the team as his counterpart.)

Mh. The problem with Koushirou and Mimi in the original timeline - for me personally - is that they are so inconsistently portrayed. Tri, for whatever reason, decided to make "the crush" a comic relief sub-side-thing, but played it "safely" by not making their relationship and their quarrels significant to either of their character arcs and that was a mistake. It was shallow and unfulfilling. I still maintain that stageplay!Koumi and To Sora!Koumi have very high chances of being compatible...

However, thinking about "what if" scenarios can be interesting too.

The question is in what ways Koushirou would have been different if he had grown up with his biological parents. We don't know much about them, aside from Masami Izumi telling us that his father was a mathematician and professor at a university. Not only was he brilliant, but also into computers - and Masami puts emphasis on how similar Koushirou is to him.

I won't go too much into detail about how to characterize Koushirou, because I have done that a million times already. Nevertheless, the three main questions here are the following: 1.) Would he have turned out as kind as he is in the OG timeline? 2.) Would he still have self-esteem issues? 3.) Would he be more observant even in times when he's got his hyper-focus goggles on?

To 1.) Koushirou in general has several sides to himself, one of them being that he likes to solve problems and is quite a hands-on person when it comes to helping others. While I can see how Kae's and Masami's upbringing had a (positive) influence on his behaviour, we also know that he tried to be "perfect" for them once he learned he wasn't their real son. So part of his helpful nature may or may not be as elaborated on if he didn't have to nurture that personality trait that intensely until it became a natural part of himself.

To 2.) His self-esteem issues in the OG timeline weren't as visible most of the time, but according to the novels, he thought of himself as "a worthless human being", who simply was just "good with computers", thinking of himself as human extension of his laptop who didn't know where he came from and why. While he was always still mostly confident in what he was doing, this is still an important part of himself. Because if he didn't have to doubt his whereabouts, If he didn't have to question whether he "had been thrown away", he may have grown up to be more confident. Or not - because he probably would have been EVEN MORE invested in computers, if his biological father had enabled him even further. And we know how early 2000s kids felt about computer nerds, so he may still have had issues interacting with others. Just for different, less identity-related reasons.

To 3.) To refer back to 2, it's hard to tell whether or not it really would have turned out differently. We learned from Masami that it was only natural that Koushirou got into computers - and him having a tendency to hyperfocus probably would not have changed that much. Because that's just who he is, he just wouldn't have done it to procrastinate and prevent his brain from overthinking, but because he simply had fun with it.

Since we don't know about his biological parents' personalities, their style of upbringing, etc. all we can guess is that if Koushirou never had to doubt his whereabouts, his self-esteem issues may not have been the same. Considering how highly Masami spoke of them, we can assume that his biological parents were still good and kind people, so for the sake of this analysis, let's assume he would still have been raised well. Whether he would have been confident or still feel isolated from other people because he could "connect with them better online than in the flesh" is up to debate.

Long story short - as I had pointed out in my headcanon post, I feel like Koumi could work out well as online friends who'd slowly but steadily fall in love over shared interests. In terms of romance, I see Mimi as someone who needs validation and attention, who needs her affections reciprocated. And Koushirou might be way better at dealing with that in his own pace in written form. Texting doesn't demand his attention all the time and I think their compatibility could develop a lot better if he's got time to actually respond to her. Because even if he might still be a kind person, even if he's still ready to jump to be helpful, he still gets lost in his interests and Mimi needs to grow familiar with that attitude of his first before she can even try to adapt to it. Because under pressure, they're both NOT good at adapting. Especially not to each other.

So - give them the opportunity to get in touch online/through texting and they may be capable of getting to know each other better first, slowly but steadily, before a romance could bloom "irl".

It’s been four years since i drew the 25 yrs later ideas i had. I wanted to make my own headcannons and everything filled with inspiration like i saw with everyone else’s. But i just don’t.

It took time for me to realize it’s ok to not have the same amazing ideas as everyone else. I do have inspirations for some characters. But not for all.

Taichi and Yamato is the same. They are married with sora being the surrogate.

I want the theme of older sisters in this au. Because there are so many older brothers as the forefront in adv. I’m glad we got older sister in hunters! We also don’t have an older sister and younger sister chosen duo i don’t think? I would like that to become reality.

I can’t think of sora being married with biological kids. Instead i see her more in the mother figure position. Like a foster parent or works at an orphanage or day center.

I like mimi and meiko still being a married couple. Have a kid, maybe even live on the out skirts of the city:..

I didn’t have anything for relationship for Koushirou. Until digimon kizuna. Two geniuses that flourish in research and computers. They could talk about various subjects for days. I don’t know if i see them as having kids.

Sometimes people want to be married, but not have kids. And there is nothing wrong with that. Not that they dislike kids. But just don’t have interest.

Jou and the bike girl from the revenge of diaboromon i know is a common ship. And jou has a girlfriend in tri. So i don’t see why they couldn’t still be a thing. Shhh. I don’t care if tri used that as a running gag My brother and his wife was an example of love at first sight. ☺️🥰 i just don’t have inspiration for their character beyond that.

I am still keeping the takeru and hikari pairing. I was nervous that the two sets of siblings was illegal. But it’s not so heck ya! I like the idea of their twins being troublemaking pranksters too much.

Daisuke and keiko. I want daisuke to be happy! But beyond marrying someone who is a big food enthusiast as he is, that’s really all i know. If they mark and have kids, should i make them have a daughter? Or maybe this is one if the cases that daisuke stays single…

Miyako and ken are the same. Older daughter, son, and youngest daughter.

Iori and Mizuki from hunters who has the submarimon is an endearing couple. I can imagine her getting him to relax by exploring the ocean. Maybe he feels obligated to explore the digital world in honor of his dad.

I also thought about daigo and maki. I’d like them to be married too. I don’t have any sparks of inspiration of what to do. But they deserve happiness after tri. 😭

Are we so sure Taichi would take Izumi as his name? Maybe Koushiro would take Yagami. Or maybe the two would just hyphenate their names

Ooh okay so to preface it’s just the way I’m personally going, but it doesn’t have to be the fandom collective or the only way even of course!! Everyone can have their own head canons / opinions!! I kind of stole the tag from @seventeenlovesthree who started a whole discussion on the last name stuff and I think came up with most of the following points in summary:

1) If you take Kizuna into consideration, Koushirou is already established in a business and has centered that around his last name and why that’s a big deal is:

2) Koushirou is taking pride in the last name of his adoptive family. He clearly views both his biological parents and his adopted parents as important figures in his life even though he has never met the former. They are all his parents and his adoptive parents view him as their real son (explicitly said in the character files)

3) Even if you don’t really consider Kizuna, Koushirou keeping the last name of the parent’s who raised him is just really sweet and Taichi being considerate of that is also a really sweet concept to consider. Also to the first point, Taichi isn’t as established at the same time Koushirou is, so it’s much easier for him to adapt to going into politics as, “Izumi Taichi.”

4) it’s absolutely hilarious to think of Koushirou going scarlet every time Taichi’s gotta introduce himself as “Izumi Taichi” at important functions and evens the playing field if you think of Taichi liking it when Koushirou just calls him, “Taichi.”

5) like if nothing else imagine Kae and Masami’s delight that Koushirou wants to keep their last name.

I do like the hyphen names in general, but I don’t think it’s as common practice in Japan so the discussion erred on the side of using one name and I liked a lot of the points, but that doesn’t mean it’s gotta jive with everyone and of course fandom can have various alternatives!! So there’s no pressure to conform if your opinions or feelings are different-- or change them up for different scenarios.

And a follow up ask: how would you describe the differences and similarities between Koushiro and Iori (as they are my 2 favorites of the Adventure 01 and 02 kids)

Since we were already talking about Iori's traditional upbringing vs. Koushirou's self-imposed correctness causing both of them to be overly polite, I will try to dig into this a little deeper. I was looking for a screenshot of them together, but then I found this pic, which I've never seen before, so I'm gonna use that one:

About their similarities:

Since Iori is meant to be the heir of the Crest of Knowledge, they're both initially shown to be equally curious people. They both wonder about the whereabouts of the Digital World, what the Chosen Children business is all about - and that's where Koushirou himself notices Iori being a great kouhai for himself, so he offers him advice and guidance whenever he needs it. So yes - the easiest comparison to make is that they're both smart and coming up with ideas that help the others along.

On a purely physical level, when they're initially introduced, they're among the youngest AND shortest members of their respective groups. And it is yet to be seen whether they'll actually surpass any other of the male characters in height.

They're both not only very polite in their speech and approach patterns overall, but also highly responsible, studious, goal-oriented and resourceful and want to do things right - to the point of losing themselves in details and (self) doubts, when things are not going according to plan.

They both have strong moral codes, are very kind at heart and highly opinionated; they definitely know what they don't like (and are more or less able to put their feet down about it, but sometimes they get overlooked by others, unfortunately).

Despite usually being level-headed, they can both get snappy/angry/witty (read: EMOTIONAL) if someone annoys them/grinds their gears.

In regards to the former point: Something they have in common I wish didn't exist to that extent is that official art tends to depict them as "too emotionless" - which definitely contradicts their multi-faceted personalities in the anime. Yes, as mentioned, they are more level-headed and calm, less outgoing than other characters - but they can have their cheerful moments with the people closest to them (including their Digimon partners and characters such as Taichi and Takeru).

Family and their bonds mean more to them than one might assume at first, since they are generally more closed-off about their private issues.

Also very similar in choosing simple, work/school-compliant clothing (read: shirt, pants, tie, nothing TOO colourful, even if they have preferences in their colours being either more muted or autumn-based).

About their differences:

As mentioned above, they are both highly curious in nature - however, when it comes to the things they want to figure out, their approaches are a little different. While Koushirou approaches everything in a mostly rational manner, Iori's questions are a little more philosophical. While he tries to be rational too, his black-white thinking tends to actually cause him to be more emotional than he'd like to. (Which shouldn't be surprising if you encounter artificially created Digimon that destruct everything mindlessly while asking about the meaning of life... Granted, Koushirou approached an entity like that too, but he ALSO tried to answer to that one more rationally...)

Despite their polite attitudes, the respective origins of their behaviours are a little different. Koushirou's politeness was self-imposed, he forced himself to act like "the perfect son" towards his adoptive parents, not knowing why he was adopted, who his biological parents were, who he even was, and so he kept a distance to everyone else, not knowing how to interact or let alone understand others when he didn't even understand himself. When he reconciled with his adoptive parents, they let him know that he could be what- and whovever he wanted to be and he's still be loved. While Iori's biological father had passed away as well, he was mainly raised in a very traditional household, being taught the customs of kendo - and developing a very black-and-white-ish moral code at first. He may have a hard time understanding other's reasonings if they don't align well with his own - but that also applies to Koushirou if somebody is not acting in reasonable ways. So something I would assign to both of them again is that they slowly but steadily have to learn to pick up cues and to be more compassionate and less rational due to their experiences. Basically - the people they willingly surround themselves with FORCE them both to think outside the box naturally.

They're both overthinkers, mainly keep their emotional states to themselves - however, if Iori bursts out, he absolutely DOES burst out. Koushirou on the other hand is more prone to ramble and talk about non-emotional things he actually wants others to know about, whereas Iori is not that generally chatty at all.

Despite "The Beginning" suggesting otherwise, Iori used to be depicted as being not very computer-crazy - he had a computer, yes, but Miyako was the one who fixed it a lot and used laptop usually, paralleling Koushirou more closely in that regard.

Speaking of "The Beginning", it can be assumed that Iori is more athletic at this point in time in comparison to Koushirou - not to call the latter an office-dweller, especially since he DOES coordinate the Chosen Children business and may participate in that as well. But Iori, despite studying hard to become a lawyer, is definitely actively putting in the energy to stay physically fit as well with kendo training.

Tl;dr, I'm not sure if that makes sense and I hope I didn't forget anything crucial.

I promise it’s not as sad as it looks like at first glance; once Koushirou tells Taichi about the passing of his biological parents, he’d definitely want to go to their grave with him. And he’d obviously be worried it might be too much for Koushirou - who’s actually just incredibly grateful for everyhing and everyone in his life. He’s content with how things have turned out, he’s acknowledging and accepting his own growth - and in this very moment, he’s just especially thankful for Taichi just being there with him, so his emotions might get the best of him, causing him to just want to let go for a short while. Taichi, in turn, is just very thankful and proud himself. I’m sorry, I’m sappy, and I want them to have good things.

I know I keep saying 2020!Taichi is like the embodiment of Sailor Moon (and probably also every shounen protagonist trope ever?), but when we talked in discord about which Chosen Child would be which Sailor Soldier... It got really difficult at times?

Taichi:

First choice: Usagi/Moon (main character, inspiring and bringing everyone together, first to receive a power update, saves the day in the end, loved and adored by everyone, protective af, heroic and self sacrificing, will kick your ass, can be a lovable dork/knucklehead, loves to eat, lives with a cat)

Second choice: Minako/Venus (sporty and competitive leader, sometimes riddled by insecurities even if nobody notices, ALSO lives with a cat)

Yamato:

First choice: Rei/Mars (when we’re talking 90s anime, it’s the fact that they’re both butting heads with the main character and being just very easy to get to explode in certain situations; when we’re talking Crystal/Eternal, it’s about them being somewhat cynical, but also somewhat mysterious and aloof)

Second choice: ??? (probably if you mixed Seiya and Yaten together??? Maybe Haruka/Uranus in terms of how they oppose the main character at some point and question their leadership abilities)

Sora:

First choice: Makoto/Jupiter (kind mom-type with a heart of gold, trying to embrace their more feminine side while simultaneously being badass as hell and could kick your ass at any given moment, can also be silly, loves to cook, complicated relationship with love, despite being very loving)

Second choice: Rei/Mars (fiery passion, ready to jump and shout for those they love, symbolized by a phoenix)

Koushirou:

First choice: Ami/Mercury (strategist of the group, uses a computer/technology to figure out weakpoints of the enemy, kind and gentle nerd, can be silly as well, eager to learn, main character is basically their first real friend)

Second choice: Makoto/Jupiter (element of lightning, kind, protective when it comes to the ones important to them, loss of biological parents)

Mimi:

First choice: Minako/Venus (passionate and loving, fierce and ready to fight you, longs to have a comfortable, happy life for themselves and others, probably has had world domination dreams here and there, tends to gets puns/sayings wrong)

Second choice: Usagi/Moon (highly empathetic, cries for the pain of others and would also fight for their sake, not the best cook in the world, but tries her best)

Jyou:

First choice: Setsuna/Pluto (supportive in the back most of the time IF time allows for them to be there, soft spot for the youngest of the group, the tallest/oldest, sacrifices themselves for the sake of others)

Second choice: Ami/Mercury (has an affinity to study, wants to become a doctor, blue hair, element of water)

Takeru:

First choice: Chibi-Usa/Chibi-Moon (youngest of the group, wants to prove themselves and is ridden by insecurities at times, somewhat of a crybaby at first who grows into a strong fighter, gentle yet cheeky, holds tremendous powers nobody suspects at once)

Second choice: ??? (probably still Hotaru/Saturn, when we talk about how the power of darkness makes him go apeshit)

Hikari:

First choice: Hotaru/Saturn (possessed by another entity, seems to possess supernatural powers, prone to sickness yet holds tremendous powers that will be the key to defeat the enemy once their true powers awaken, soft and gentle but will sass and fight you if you hurt the ones they love, main character wants to rescue them, a good relationship with the youngest of the group)

Second choice: Chibi-Usa/Chibi-Moon (related to main character, pink colour scheme, same voice actress in Japanese version)
