hey, i'm planning to get armored core 6 despite never playing any of those games before and since you seem pretty knowledgeable about them i was wondering if you have any tips for someone totally new to the series?
Sorry for the super late answer!
The first thing I can tell you about Armored Core is that you have to get comfy because half of the game is high speed intense high octane combat, and the other half is accounting. Brother, I know how much you want to go back to the part where rifles go bang and swords go swoosh and you have enough Gs on your body that you could passably cosplay a plate of mashed of potatoes, but you gotta do the Excel spreadsheet part, too.
It's really not as bad as it seems, and once it clicks, you know exactly what to look for. But if you want to get all the juice out of the tenga, you have to sit down and take a deep gander at how the systems click. Once you do, trust me on this one, an endless horizon of options will stretch before you because that's when you'll know exactly how to tailor your big death machine to your exact specifications and playstyle. It's deep, but also deeply rewarding!
Next up, something universally useful in Armored Core: Turning Speed. If you can mod, upgrade, or otherwise improve your "Turning Speed" (or equivalent) stat, crank that up as often as you can. It's always a powerful tool, it's always very useful, it's never superfluous. This ties in to the next point:
Your strongest weapon is your camera. When fighting other ACs, player controlled or otherwise, your strongest tool, throughout the games, has been to keep your opponent in your camera, and to stay out of your opponent's camera. Movement is huge in Armored Core, you need to move so as to 1) keep your enemy in your sights, 2) stay out of your enemy's sights, and 3) line up shots. We call this "lining up a vector" or "keeping the enemy in a vector". What this means is that you want to set up your enemy in such a way that they are moving in a direct vector relative to you -- directly towards you or away from you -- so that your shot with stronger, single shot weaponry will land and deal significant damage. You set up this vector while also trying to not be 'caught' in one yourself, and as you may think, this is hard, because if they are in your vector, you are in most situations also in theirs. So, the solution? Be outside of their camera while they are in yours. Can't shoot what they aren't aiming at, right? This is a lot to take in, I know, but you don't have to commit all of this to execution off rip, just keep it in mind, develop your playstyle and learn naturally with this in the back of your head until it clicks and you start being able to see, through your own playstyle, how it is you'll do that.
One final thing I want to recommend is that you don't fall for the allure of The Big Damage Number without considering other factors. Especially when learning, you want to make a balanced build: Have your single shot strong weapons, like a grenade launcher or sniper rifle, paired with a weaker but easier to land weapon, like assault rifles or machine guns, and compliment this further with some sort of auxiliary tool or weapon, like flares that give you leeway, or missiles that can put further pressure on your enemy. In general, when starting out their Armored Core journey, I recommend to people the following loadout: Grenade launcher, assault rifle, laser sword, missile launcher. This is a well rounded toolkit that'll keep you effective at most ranges, and more importantly, will reveal to you, your own preferences. Once you become a super Newtype ace pilot fuckhouse, you'll doubtlessly make your own deathkaiser machine with quadruple railguns or missileboats or pure melee builds, but to get to that point where you know exactly what you want to do, a balanced build helps in letting you learn where your heart leans, what kind of movement-to-bulk ratio works best for you, which weapons are your favorite, etc.

heya! so i havent really been able to get into project sekai via other means and im still curious about mizuki's story that ive heard so many good things about. So im considering downloading the game, especially since i found out its a rythm game and i like those. i assume once i do that i can just read all the stories involving mizuki's group. before i do tho, i just wanted to ask and make sure i can still experience the full story this way? this game has a way to replay old stories and i wont be locked out of important plot stuff starting as late as i am? i really appreciated your feedback on this before and would love if you could help me out again.
heya! happy to help how i can. short answer is yes with some conditions for extra stories.

on the main screen for prsk the story tab at the bottom will take you to the next screen. side stories are the ones behind character cards! having the card and using some resources to unlock them are requirements to read in-game. there is the v useful feature of seeing if a char features in someone else's card that said. so after youve read main stuff, it makes it much easier to see how the card stories add to certain events. (ultimately though you can think of most card stories as enhancing main story, thougn there are some connections that show up way earlier in cards than in main story.)
main and event stories are freely open to read! though you don't get as many resources from reading past events, you still get something, so extra incentive if you end up sticking to the game. (and if you do decide to play en let me know! can shoot me your id and add each other, do love playing w folk i know!)

btw if you are getting into some vtuber music you should check out the songs by the jp talent Hoshimachi Suisei, she's an incredible singer who has been crazy successful, she's even doing the ED song for the new gundam anime coming out this season. I recommend checking out her song Stellar Stellar for a start!
The name sounds familiar, I think I've heard her on one of Calli's songs that I remember really liking.
I think it was Capsule?
Looking it up, it was Capsule, think I've listened to that one a couple dozen times, and I think I also really liked the song Wicked, which I think was her.
Definitely gonna try out Stellar Stellar next time I get a chance, though. Thanks for the recommendation!

Wrong #829
Called Kama “Mom”
I’ve never heard the cafeteria quite so quiet as in the ten seconds following that moment
I don’t think either of them have quite recovered from the incident

hey, ive seen a lot of good stuff about project sekai and mizuki's character on your blog and others whose opinions i trust and im intrigued to see what the hypes about, but i also swore i wouldnt play anymore gacha games after i got into arknights. do you know if theres a resource or website where i can read the story without having to interact with the gacha game elements?
hey! i can def help with that (and may i say, i'm truly delighted my rambles and others have piqued your interest, I've always appreciated your own analyses for other fandoms we've shared).
For just reading the story, though without L2D animations: sekai.best. Event stories, card stories, even the mini-convos that the characters have in the various areas, you can read them here. I'm constantly cross-referencing here when writing. You can also change in the settings what server you're looking at, so you can look at EN's translations, or at the stories only currently in JP for example.
For watching events with their official TLs: the official EN channel's playlists. Weirdly hard to find the channel so direct link here. Currently way behind as well. Someone noted, i think it was proseka-facts? that recording for this seems to happen on someone's phone.
For the most complete record of the story outside of the game's internal archive: the JP channel playlist. One playlist unlike EN, and updated far more regularly/frequently, currently only a single event behind (only the most recent event is not yet uploaded). However, no subtitles.
For the next most complete record where you can watch that has subs: this utterly massive playlist where the creator, bless them, is trying to have links to all the event story in one list. A bit behind, but is in-between the official EN and JP playlists.
However, since some channels have been delisted, and there have been times in the past I've noted some events only get partially TL'd (bless the TLers doing this on their own time) what I'd recommend is using sekai best's event list to see order and if an event isn't in the list, trying to search it up on its own, to see if anyone made a 'backup' for that event.. or if someone's TL'd it but the playlist owner just hasn't had the time to put it into the master playlist.
Hope this all helps! And I do look forward to your thoughts on it; would love to discuss sometime :3

just as a heads up, if you do decide to check out v for vendetta, i recommend the comic. its a masterpiece graphic novel with incredible writing. the movie is good but simplifies a lot of the comics complexities and really fails to capture the depth of the story and characters. v for example, is meant to be a morally grey terrorist who is correct to fight against the fascist state but also shows no qualms about dirtying his hands doing horrible things to people. the movie tries to frame him as a straightforward hero while still keeping in some of his most terrible actions. its a bit dissonant imo. tho ironically seeing the movie first might be better bc once you read the comic it kind of ruins the movie for you lol. either way its a really good story, highly recommend it!
That actually works out pretty well, since I do prefer reading to watching, so the comic would be preferable for me.
I'll probably put a hold on it with my library right now, hopefully it's not too long of a wait.
But thanks! Part of me was wondering if I could justify reading it instead of watching it, since that post listed a few things about the movie that were better, but now I'm looking forward to reading it.

important question re: the sakura and kirei scene, did they keep the bit where sakura pretends to have a split personality and kirei calls her out on it? i always felt that was a really important moment bc its nasu tearing apart the idea that sakura in the black dress is The Bad Sakura who is somehow a separate person from the normal kind Sakura. Both are Sakura, they are the same person, just one before and one after hitting her breaking point. i've been hoping the movie wouldn't cut it.
Yes! He calls her on that and says something like “the Sakura who is doing all this is the same girl you have always been” and she gets pretty angry with him about it. It is a fun moment because it drives home that she’s not possessed by evil or something, she’s just Had Enough and this is a bass-boosted manifestation of the rage she has always been capable of. It also gives way to her acting very much like her old self in the final sequence, even before Shirou frees her from the contract. It means they forego the whole “I know the real you is in there somewhere!” thing and Shirou just talks to Sakura like he normally would, which was just such a great moment for their relationship

im curious to hear your thoughts on the new fruits basket episode, if you don't mind sharing?
I liked it a lot!
The first sections with Haru and the kids felt a little too melodramatic for my tastes in certain points (Haru’s conversation w Yuki, not the rest of his scenes) but nothing too egregious and the part in which Akito and her mother “fight” over who keeps closer her dad’s ashes was a bit... iffy for me, but I suppose it’s a cultural difference.
Other than this, the rest of the episode was excellent! The Rin/Haru parts were lovely, but of the “big” scenes/sequences, I think my favorites were Haru’s confrontation with Akito and especially Kureno making an effort to tell Akito she’s been acting wrongly (it fit so well with that “real pity is a good thing”-FB related post from some months ago, I was grinning!). That kid badly needed to get told to “cut the bullshit” as Haru so eloquently put it and also badly needs someone to give her a saner ethical mind frame. Hiiro’s “she can stop or she’s gonna be messed up forever” is perfect both for Rin and Akito, except the “can” has to be a “must” in Akito’s case.
I’m sure her dad meant well when he told her she was born to be loved, but forgetting to add “that doesn’t mean you can do everything you want, harm who you want then keep expecting the same love” ended up doing his daughter (and clan) no favors. But seeing how Akito clings to his words I imagine he died when she was still rather young and impressionable and she never had the chance to move past the “basest” interpretation of the phrase?
From few lines here and there I’m pretty sure her mom was an outsider seen with coldness and, once widowed, was too wrapped in her own grief and isolation to help her kid navigate the world (she might also be just an asshole for shit and jiggles, but FB doesn’t strike to me as that kind of story).
Actually, wait.
The scene with the old lady-in-waiting also was a very nice one and -I’m rather sure- another nail in the coffin of “the entire clan/traditions must be dismantled”, the whole mentality is rotten. When she said “on whose side are you” I wanted to barge in and yell: “Akito’s, you cretin!”, in the only way she can stop being so miserable herself.

My family lives in desperate conditions. I present to you a family of more than fifteen children. We live in very difficult circumstances😭🙏🇵🇸🍉🔻
Our children often say: "Stop the war - we are children - we want to live." But does anyone in the world hear his screams and respond to him? We live in a state of despair. This family has been living for nine months in a small tent no larger than 3 metres. Imagine spending every day, every night, and every moment in such cramped conditions. They need urgent support to rebuild our home and restore a sense of normalcy

forgive me if im wrong, but didnt you plan to read the hork bajir chronicles before #15 with the hammerhead sharks? or did you change your mind? just wondering bc the hork bajir chronicles is one of my favorite pieces of animorphs writing and im looking forward to see your thoughts on it.
Look I’m reading this as they come, if I need to read something, someone needs to tell me because I am driving this car with an atlas in the glove compartment and no smartphone and I cannot go fumbling with a roadmap while I’m driving.

not only is goldenglow a great gameplay unit but her event is still one of my favorite stories in arknights! its actually self contained instead of yet another "to be continued" step in a larger story and the way each section and character pov change builds up the story was really effective. i know you are taking it slow with arknights but im looking forward to your thoughts on that event when you get there.
I honestly can't wait to have her.
Just from the times I've borrowed her, I've loved using her, and all the times I've seen her she's seemed so good. I love that pink cat.
And honestly, I can't wait to read Light Spark in the Darkness, which I think is her event?
Looking at my list, I just have 4 more events until I get to that one, so it's close. (PL, Episode 9, BtI, ItW).
And something tells me I might speed up a little after Preluding Lights. If not, I'll just continue taking it slow, but I do find I make my way through Vignettes a lot slower.
And when I get there, I get there. There's no rush, and the wait may make it all the more worth it, especially if it's not forced.
