Some movies, considered chronologically:

THE FLAMINGO KID (1984): Nostalgia-burdened period piece, set in 1963, about working-class kid Jeffrey (Matt Dillon), who gets a summer job parking cars at an exclusive beach club called El Flamingo, starts dating a rich girl (Carole R. Davis), and becomes fascinated by her father (Richard Crenna), a self-made sports car dealer and local card sharp who thinks college is sucker's game. This alienates Jeffrey's own father (Hector Elizondo), a stalwart plumber who doesn't want to see Jeffrey squander his chances of bettering himself. The story is thus a sort of YA prototype of Oliver Stone's later WALL STREET — a Reagan-era morality play about a young man caught between two father figures, one representing the Lure of Easy Money and the other a paragon of Honest Hard Work — badly undermined by its absurdly idealized longing for the alleged innocence of the Kennedy era (underlined by an obnoxious oldies soundtrack). It offers a meaty role for Crenna, but as a drama, it has less substance than FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF. Davis's character is such a nonentity that you keep forgetting she's there, and the way she ends up functioning as a proxy for Jeffrey's obsession with her dad is awkward. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Nope. VERDICT: A simple-minded story blinded by its rose-colored glasses.

THE JOY LUCK CLUB (1993): Sudsy but affecting episodic adaptation of Amy Tan's novel about four middle-aged Chinese women and their strained relationships with their Chinese-American daughters, starring Ming-Na Wen and nearly every other Chinese actress working in the U.S. at the time. The way the script segues between the characters' respective stories is clunky, and it often teeters on the brink of schmaltz, but there are moments of real dramatic power amongst the more superficial tearjerker moments, and you'd have to have a stonier heart than I to not sob at the bittersweet ending. Strong acting helps, with Tsai Chin particularly good as Auntie Lindo. CONTAINS LESBIANS? It seems like it should, but alas. VERDICT: Heavy-handed at times, but undeniably moving.

COLD COMFORT FARM (1996): Before she became an action star, Kate Beckinsale starred in this hilarious adaptation of Stella Gibbons' 1932 satiric novel about glib orphan Flora Poste, who makes it her project to fix all the problems of the titular farm and its eccentric denizens — distant cousins who feel obligated to Flora (whom they will only address as "Robert Poste's child") because of some unspecified wrong they once did her late father. Among the inmates of Cold Comfort are Cousin Judith (Eileen Atkins), a hysterically morose creature straight out of a gothic novel; Cousin Amos (Ian McKellen), a fire-and-brimstone preacher who warns his brethren, "There'll be no butter in Hell!"; Amos and Judith's oversexed son Seth (Rufus Sewell), a local stud who dreams of being in the talkies; and of course Aunt Ada Doom (Sheila Burrell), who rules the family with an iron fist and won't let anyone forget that she once saw something nasty in the woodshed. A delightfully silly spoof of a particular category of once-popular English literature, as the farm's assorted grim melodramas prove no match for the implacable (if somewhat snobbish) modern sensibilities of its plucky heroine. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Nope. VERDICT: Great fun throughout, although Stephen Fry irritates as a boorish "Laurentian person" who keeps hitting on Flora despite her obvious disinterest.

BREAKDOWN (1997): Competent but underwhelming Jonathan Mostow thriller starring Kurt Russell and Kathleen Quinlan as Jeff and Amy Taylor, a couple of Yuppies whose fancy Jeep breaks down on the highway on a trip from Massachusetts to California. A passing trucker (J.T. Walsh) gives Amy a ride into the nearest town to find them a tow truck, but when Jeff gets their Jeep running again and follows her into town, he finds that Amy has disappeared, and no one, including the trucker, will admit to having seen her. It has a great premise, and Russell is credible enough in the lead, but it's pretty ordinary, and, once you know what's going on (which is revealed a little over a half-hour in), pretty superficial — there's no psychological depth, and I kept waiting for some other story twist that never came. CONTAINS LESBIANS? It barely contains women (Amy is absent for 80 percent of the running time). VERDICT: Not bad, but nothing special, and you'll forget it 10 minutes after it ends.

MY TWO HUSBANDS (2024): Okay Lifetime thriller about a young woman named Eliza (Isabelle Almoyan), still reeling from the recent murder of her mother (Joanie Geiger), who becomes deeply suspicious of her father's young new wife, a flight attendant named Brooke (Kabby Borders) who's no older than Eliza — and, as the title alludes, is secretly married to another man (Britton Webb, who looks like a lesser Baldwin brother) and up to no good. Despite the cheesy title (which is really also a spoiler) and awkward marketing (which misleadingly suggests a comedy-drama with Brooke rather than Eliza as the main character), it has a surprisingly decent, reasonably credible script, hamstrung by very weak performances. The story is still interesting enough to make it a not-bad little thriller, although it would have been better with a stronger cast and less somnabulistic direction. CONTAINS LESBIANS: It sometimes seems like Eliza's friend Star (Kristen Grace Gonzalez) might be her girlfriend, but the script is noncommittal on this point. VERDICT: A B+ script burdened with D+ acting and C- direction.

Updated 100 Memorable Skating Programs

Back in 2018, I created the original version of this list. (You can find the master post here.) Since 2024 marks my 30th year as an official fan of figure skating and there have been some more great programs created since the last time, I thought it was about time to update the list in honor of World Ice Skating Day. Same rules apply as last time:

Only senior competitive programs starting from the 1993-1994 season are eligible, since that's the first season I really started watching figure skating.

Each skater may only be listed once, unless a partner/discipline switch is involved.

Choice of music may also not be repeated. (Yes, there are two James Bond programs on the list, but Yuna and Wakaba use different music for the most part, so I'm letting it slide.)

I debated long and hard about whether or not I should still include programs from skaters who have proven themselves to be not so great people. I'm someone who has little difficulty separating the art from the artist, so in the end, I decided to keep them listed (although most of them got knocked down a few pegs). This list is more about the choreography than the skater anyway, although there are certainly some problematic choreographers out there, too. (Looking at you especially, Morozov!) So, just because a skater is listed doesn't mean that I'm a fan of them or that I condone their actions! I just think certain programs are still great regardless of the skaters' terrible behavior off the ice.

Choreographers are noted if known. If you know who choreographed the programs without a choreographer named, please let me know!

Robert Galbraith: The Running Grave - 4 és fél nap alatt olvastam el az 1200 oldalt, szóval nem volt baja. Mármint a könyvnek, nem az írónak, még mielőtt.

V. E. Schwab: The Fragile Threads of Power - Tök jó, hogy ez idén jelent meg, mert pont tavaly olvastam el végre a trilógiát, amihez kapcsolódik. Nagyon jó kis folytatás volt, találkoztunk régi szereplőkkel is, de nem éreztem erőltetettnek, jó volt velük újra együtt. Hozta az első könyvek szintjét.

Erlend Loe: Doppler - Minden évben olvasok Loe-t, a Dopplert most olvastam talán ötödjére.

Harper Lee: To Kill a Mockingbird - Régen el akarom olvasni, hiszen klasszikus, amiről ódákat szokás zengeni. Megérdemli. Nagyon intelligens könyv.

Margaret Atwood: The Edible Woman - Ez tőle az első könyvem. Olvasás közben is tetszett, de a végén visszagondolva az egészre még jobban. Durva, hogy mindezt a hatvanas években írta.

Kurt Vonnegut: Slaughterhouse-Five - Tizensok éve olvastam utoljára Vonneguttól, olyat akartam, amit még nem. Az értékelések meg az ajánlók szeretik a megrázó, gusztustalan, megdöbbentő jelzőkkel illetni ezt a könyvet, de nekem annyira nem volt úgy kirívóan egyik sem, hogy a végén utánajártam, hogy nem-e valami cenzúrázott változatot sikerült-e olvasnom. Émile Ajar: Előttem az élet - Újraolvasás. Szép és jó még mindig.

Kazuo Ishiguro: Never Let Me Go - Erről meg már annyi jót hallottam, hogy mondom akkor bepótolom gyorsan. Annyira azért nem mennék messzire, hogy azt mondjam, fölösleges időpocsékolás volt, de hogy semmit nem tett hozzá az életemhez ez a könyv, az is biztos. Nem jött meg a kedvem ehhez az íróhoz.

Haruki Murakami: The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle - Elkezdtem angolul, bár Murakamit legtöbbször magyarul olvastam eddig. Annyira out of place volt az egésznek a hangulata, és annyi félrefordítás-szerű értelmetlenség volt benne, hogy muszáj volt utána járnom (redditen kurvajó beszélgetéseket találtam róla), meg magyarul is elkezdenem, hogy kiderüljön, mi folyik itt. Kiderült: borzalmasan szar az angol fordítása :D

Murakami Haruki: A Kurblimadár krónikája - Magyarul jobb volt :) Nem a legjobb könyve, de könnyen lecsúszott.

Ross Welford: The 1000 Year Old Boy - Ez nagyon aranyos sztori volt. Okos, érzelmekkel teli gyerekkönyv, szerethető karakterekkel. 10-12 éveseknek ajánlják, de szerintem a nagyobbaknak is élvezetes.

Franz Kafka: Metamorphosis - Egyike a rengeteg kötelezőnek, amit még sosem olvastam. Részleteket belőle talán, de azokra sem emlékeztem. Ez is a gusztustalan, gyomorforgató, borzalmas jelzőket szokta kapni, de én már soha többet nem hiszek másoknak. Mondjuk én bírom a bogarakat. Egyébként tetszett nagyon, biztosan el fogom még olvasni párszor.

Jane Austen: Pride and Prejudice - Na ha már olyan jól mentek idén a klasszikusok, próbáljunk rá erre - gondoltam én, balga módon. Kb 120 oldal után feladtam. Fuh te. Ennyi üres, semmitmondó, idegesítő beszélgetést én még sosem láttam egy helyen. Értem én, hogy a maga idejében ez volt A Könyv, és még a lövészárkokban is ezt olvasták, de hát a Fifty Shades of Grey is mekkorát ment már... :)

Khaled Hosseini: A Thousand Splendid Suns - A Kite Runner jobban tetszett, ez sokkal kevésbé tűnt valósnak nekem, ami rontott az élvezeti értékén.

Louis Sachar: Holes - Ez magyarul a Stanley, a szerencse fia címet viseli, és az egyik legjobb ifjúsági regény evör. Nem először olvastam.

Margaret Atwood: The Handmaid's Tale + The Testaments - Megmondom őszintén, én már ezt a két könyvet így 4 hónap távlatából sem tudom ketté választani, egyáltalán nem emlékszem, melyikben mi történt. Az Ehető Nő után, mivel ez kapta mindig a hype-ot, jobbat vártam, de ez legyen az én bajom.

Carlos Ruiz Zafón: The Labyrinth of the Spirits - Azt kicsit megbántam, hogy nem a másik három után olvastam tavaly, így majdnem egy év kihagyás után már fogalmam nem volt, hogy a régi szereplők közül ki kicsoda. De így is nagyon élvezetes volt, pörgött a sztori, és a lezárás sem volt borzalmas. (Az utolsó fejezetet leszámítva, arra nem tudom, mi szükség volt.)

Mark Haddon: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - Nagyon ritkán mondom könyvekre, hogy ezt mindenkinek el kéne olvasnia. Na ezt mindenkinek el kéne olvasnia.

Arthur Golden: Memoirs of a Geisha - Már a Hosseinivel is az volt szerintem a bajom, hogy nagyon érezhetően a női közönségnek írták férfiak, ebből meg egyenesen üvöltött. De legalább nem az a fajta, aki teljesen hülyének néz :) Nem volt benne fölösleges, csöpögős romantika (plusz pont), viszont olyan túlzottan hihetőre sem sikerült (mínusz pont, ha már memoárként tálaljuk). Rossz mondjuk nem volt, de azért sokat nem veszít az ember, ha sose kerül a kezébe. 1001 könyves listák ide vagy oda.

Andy Weir: Project Hail Mary - Ezt az embert én nem tartom kifejezetten jó írónak, igazából nem tudom, mit vártam ettől a könyvtől, vagy hogy miért vettem a kezembe. A kis alien haver cuki volt benne, amúgy azért nem az év sci-fije, pedig szokás dicsérni.

Arto Paasilinna: Az akasztott rókák erdeje - Nagyon finn, nagyon sarkvidéki (fun fact: pont azon a szélességi körön játszódik, ahol élek), nagyon vicces kis abszurdum. Kicsit olyan, mint egy népmese, csak nem a legkisebb királyfiról, hanem egy bűnöző és egy alkoholista őrnagy kapcsolatáról szól a finn vadonban, ahol mindenféle váratlan és fura dolog történik velük. Fogok még a szerzőtől olvasni.

Octavia E. Butler: Xenogenesis trilogy - Így kell sci-fit írni. Apokalipszis, fura földönkívüli lények, hiteles emberi karakterek, jól felépített világ, értelmes, komoly, intelligens, váratlan sztori, de sosem wtf. Még csak pár órája tettem le, de már hiányoznak.

Maybe a unpopular opinion, but I hated Nas for hooking up with Kurt when he was all vulnerable in Bulgaria. On the other hand, Nas was a welcomed distraction for Kurt from his feelings toward Jane. I was still happy when she called it off a couple of weeks later. Kurt belongs to Jane and Jane to Kurt.

A CAÇA E A CAÇADORA

Nadya Rasputina nasceu e foi criada em São Petesburgo por sua mãe, uma mulher que foi casada com Mikhail Rasputin por um tempo, mas que o deixou quando percebeu o quão instável o mutante estava se tornando. Temendo pela segurança da filha, ela optou por criar Nadya em segredo e longe não só do pai, mas também de seus tios, Piotr e Illyana (que nunca souberam de sua existência).

A garota viveu uma vida relativamente normal, até que seus poderes se manifestaram pela primeira vez, na adolescência. Quando isso aconteceu, sua mãe lhe contou quem era seu pai (mas não disse que ele tinha irmãos) e lhe disse para ter cuidado não só com ele, mas também ao usar seus poderes em público, afinal, o preconceito contra mutantes sempre foi alto, e havia muitos grupos anti-mutantes extremistas em todos os lugares, especialmente onde moravam.

Por anos, isso não foi um problema para Nadya. Seus poderes podiam ser escondidos com facilidade, então ela aparentava ser uma humana comum, como qualquer outra. No entanto, aos 18 anos, ela perdeu a mãe, e teve que se virar por conta própria. Ela se mudou para Moscou, e conseguiu sobreviver, mas o dinheiro era sempre um problema. Aos 21 anos, ela acabou por fazer escolhas ruins, e entrou para um clube de luta clandestino de mutantes.

Ela se tornou realmente boa nessas lutas, não porque era a melhor lutadora, longe disso. Ela passou a se destacar porque era esperta, e sabia usar seus poderes de manipulação espacial para vencer todas as quais entrava. E foi nesse clube que ela atraiu a atenção de Irina Kravinoff, a mais jovem herdeira da linhagem Kravinoff. Uma caçadora como todos de sua família, Irina já era conhecida por se especializar em caçar apenas mutantes que ela considerava como presas dignas.

PARTE 2 - A CAÇADA COMEÇA

Enquanto voltava para casa depois de mais uma noite de lutas, em uma noite como qualquer outra, Nadya foi atacada por Irina. A perseguição durou algum tempo, e Nadya quase foi morta. Então, sem outra alternativa, ela foi forçada a se defender. Usando seus poderes, acabou por ferir Irina com certa gravidade, e isso a deixou um pouco abalada. Ela estava acostumada a ganhar lutas, mas nunca a realmente ferir alguém como ela fez naquela noite.

Ainda em perigo, Nadya usou essa vantagem, para escapar, mas ela sabia que a Caçadora não iria parar de caça-la, especialmente agora, até que uma das duas estivesse morta. Também muito ferida pela perseguição, com medo e sem ter para onde ir, Nadya toma a decisão desesperada de procurar a Guarda do Inverno. Ela sabia que eles estavam lá para ajudar, afinal, então foi até eles, em busca de proteção.

PARTE 3 - A PROTEÇÃO DA GUARDA

Nadya conseguiu chegar à base da Guarda do Inverno e só teve tempo de pedir ajuda antes de desmaiar nos braços de Lukyan. Ao ver o estado dela, ele, que estava sob o comando da equipe na ausência de Jackie, toma a decisão de ajudá-la, apesar dos protestos de Arkadiy e Mariya.

Assim que Nadya acorda e se recupera um pouco, ela conta tudo a eles. Ela diz, de forma relutante, quem é seu pai (ele é um vilão muito conhecido, ela não tem um pingo de orgulho dele) e fala sobre a Caçadora. A Guarda já estava familiarizada com o nome de Irina, pois ela havia sido a responsável por deixar um rastro de mutantes mortos por toda a Rússia nos últimos anos. Eles já vinham tentando  rastreá-la para detê-la, mas como ela sempre foi muito boa em escapar, Irina sempre se manteve um passo à frente deles.

Nadya implora por proteção, e apesar de um pouco incertos, eles acabam deixando que ela fique com eles por um tempo, não só para protegê-la, mas também para usá-la para tentar pegar Irina de uma vez por todas.

COISAS A SE CONSIDERAR:

O clube de luta mencionado é como aquele que foi mostrado em X-Men apocalypse, em que Kurt e Anjo lutam.

Nadya não faz ideia se seu pai sabe ou não de sua existencia, mas ela vive com medo de que ele possa vir atrás dela. Ele é um vilão muito conhecido na Russia, e seu paradeiro e status no momento são desconhecido, mas nunca se sabe.

Lukyan conta pra Nadya que ela tem um tio e uma tia vivendo nos Estados Unidos, e que eles são parte dos X-Men. Eles se oferecem para leva-la até eles, mas Nadya recusa. Ela diz que não se sente preparada para conehce-los, e se sente mais segura ali, com eles.

Ela não é exatamente uma integrante da equipe ainda. Ela está sob a proteção deles no momento, mas ela vai comear a se envolver com a equipe aos poucos.

Nadya foi a primeira a conseguir escapar de Irina, isso quer dizer que elas

NOTAS: Sim, duas pelo preço de uma! A terceira Rasputin veio aí! Ela já era uma personagem antiga que eu morria de vontade de trazer pra cá, mas sempre adiava. Agora, depois que me incentivaram lá na GeneXt, ela veio :D E trouxe junto uma vilã pra Guarda de brinde, que pra minha felicidade, está crescendo bastante saashsahas Eles já estão mais completos do que os Novos Defensores, e isso é muito doido. Mas eu to bem feliz, porque eles são a minha segunda equipe favorita, depois dos JV (eu amo a geneXt, mas amo a Guarda 1% a mais ) ahuasuashuas

Enfim, eu ia postar direto lá na GeneXt, porque aí ficava separadinho com elas respondendo lá, e a Jackie e o Liam aqui (até proque elas tem muitas logações com mutantes), mas na real, vocês podem mandar asks pra elas nos dois lugares.

Já vou dar um spoiler: é bem provável que a Nadya seja par do Lukyan, e é por isso que eu quero trocar o fc dele. Mas esse casal não vai acontecer agora agora. Eu quero continuar me focando um pouco mais na Jackie e no Liam, ainda tem coisas que eu quero postar sobre eles, então pra não me embolar toda, vamos por partes ahasuhauhsau
