Project Title: Yayoi Kusama - Polka-Dotted Lecture Series
Class: GD304 - Type IV: Expressive Type
Year: Spring 2023
Project Description: We were assigned a fictitious lecture series based on an artist of our choosing. We used expressive typography to create a piece based on the name of the artist, then used this in multiple applications (including the above poster and outdoor banners). The project utilized expressive type to explore type as image or symbol instead of being strictly readable.

Poster for the 2017-2018 Delirious - Art at the Limits of Reason 1950-1980 show at the Met
The exhibition's description:
"Delirious times demand delirious art, or so this exhibition proposes. The years between 1950 and 1980 were beset by upheaval. Around the globe, military conflict proliferated and social and political unrest flared. Disenchantment with an oppressive rationalism mounted, as did a corollary interest in fantastic, hallucinatory experiences. Artists responded to these developments by incorporating absurdity, disorder, nonsense, disorientation, and repetition into their work. In the process, they destabilize space and perception, give form to extreme mental, emotional, and physical states, and derange otherwise logical structures and techniques. Delirious explores the embrace of irrationality among American, Latin American, and European artists."
Featured artists included Philip Guston, Eva Hesse, Yayoi Kusama, Sol LeWitt, Darcílio Lima, Lee Lozano, Ana Mendieta, Claes Oldenburg, Carolee Schneemann, and Nancy Spero.

Kusama Yayoi
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yayoi Kusama is a painter, sculptor, and 'obsessional artist' from Japan who has been representing by using 'polka dots' in her entire creations. Her works have strongly affected the categories of Pop art and contemporary art. The forms of artwork are usually sculptures and street art which are suitable in a wide range of areas for displaying. Back to her childhood trauma, she had experienced a period in which value males more than females. On the other hand, Japan was conservative in the 20th century which all criticised her art style. Even affected her mental health and attempted suicide repeatedly. Her mental stresses turned to the passion and insane of creating her art, her unexpected world, and made her one of the world's representative artists.

Shinkai Makoto
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shinkai Makoto is a director, writer, producer, animator, editor, cinematographer, voice actor, manga artist and former graphic designer from Japan. There are some representative animate movies directed by him, such as Suzume (2022), Your Name. (2016) and The Garden of Words (2013). Each of them is the trend in the market of animation in Japan and worldwide.
The characteristic of his directed works is richly crafted, hand-drawn backgrounds and light patterns, with an emphasis on natural imagery. The background design is a reference to real Japanese streets. As same as the world he created in the movie, the cross-over between real life and virtual life is integrated into the plot. The theory is successful at creating a 'magical realism'.

Mateusz Urbanowicz is a Polish illustrator, artist and animator who moved to Japan for marriage and painting careers. He belongs to the Comix Wave Films animation studio with Shinkai Makoto. He participated in the scene design and main illustration of the movie 'Your Name' and 'Suzume', and the primary vision design of other movie posters.
He is passionate about the watercolour painting of old buildings. He found interest in the streets with alleys, temples and lower buildings which surprised Mateusz Urbanowicz like a 'surprise pack'. The illustration accumulated a long period and formed a book named 'Boutique de Tokyo'. Moreover, he is also passionate about short animation which represents his work produced individually.

Miyuzaki Hayao
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Miyazaki Hayao is a representative animate director and illustrator in Japan. Also one of the co-founders in Studio Ghibli with Isao Takahata. The animated movies directed by him are almost all popular, such as 'Castle in the Sky (1986), 'Spirit Away' (2001), 'Howl's Moving Castle (2004) and he released his manifesto of retirement with his latest directed animation named 'The Boy and the Heron' in 2023.
Compared with his mature identity in person, the style of his directed animation is almost in a warm, comfortable mood with an exquisite stroke of character and worldbuilding. Moreover, a profound message usually hides behind the plot in each story, such as the environmental protection in the movie 'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind' and the discussion of life in the movie 'The Boy and the Heron'. These characteristics form him a representative stage in the world.

Say HANA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SAY Hana is the pseudonym for an illustrator, digital designer and graphic designer from Taiwan. The actual name is Lin Hua. The characteristic of her artwork remains a bunch of details within the main character. The gorgeousness is not reduced even in the low-saturated tone of colour palettes.
One of her most famous projects is the 'Personification of Diseases', which is a project from TWCDC (Taiwan Center for Disease Control and Prevention) and other creatives from Taiwan. This project aims to let people gain knowledge about the diseases around the Earth without fearing facing the actual symptom shown in real photographs, such as COVID-19 or Syphilis. Even this project has a controversy of 'embellishing the actual disease'. The character design, the clothes style or decorative elements, and even the content of the magazine-type writing are all been criticised for the history, the symptom and the definition of disease accordingly.

These are the public locker decoration in the AM (Auckland war memorial museum). There are stickers of ancient 'bags' and 'vessels' on each locker. This is a playful strategy for decorating a locker and making them involved in the mood of the museum. It also increases the chance for people to gain knowledge once they select the locker and check the numbered list for each one of the cool ancient bags or vessels.

Week 2: 20 Creatives
For our week 2 SDL, we were also asked to collect work from 20 creatives, with 10 specifically being from NZ.
International Creatives
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NZ Creatives
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Based on last week's event research, I researched 5 more international creatives. I then researched 10 New Zealand creatives who have worked with a variety of media and subject matter.
The international creatives were chosen based on their contribution to many significant art and design movements throughout history, and the NZ creatives' work are more diverse, focused on different media and subject matters, both internal and external.

Weekend points:
Smash! Records is great as always, and I noticed they have a Boomtown Rats photo on their beam. PUNK. Any record store that puts Shudder To Think and Nation of Ulysses CDs on the shelf is the real deal. Also PUNK.
W.I.T.C.H. and Death Valley Girls at the Black Cat Friday night. Exactly the tonic I needed. DVG ended their set with “Disaster (Is What We’re After)”, or one of the best modern psychedelic rock songs, during which I got to experience my first true “pit” as opposed to flinching on the periphery. My nose got bonked. Deliscious. Then W.I.T.C.H., whose name stands for “We Intend To Cause Havoc”, did exactly what they intended to do. I love getting myself lost in music, especially recently. It’s the closest I have to a religion, having never done drugs. Getting a brand new sonic prescription, not just through headphones but supplied directly through booming amplifiers, to truly lose myself in a dark room for a short while, was exactly what I needed. To let my head bang in whatever direction it wanted to and let it swell a little. A guy in a well fitting Jesus Lizard(!) shirt, tight pants, and combat boots was totally losing it right up against the amp for W.I.T.C.H.; I saw him around a few times throughout the night between bands. These are the things I like to see.
The Air and Space Museum is only half open for continuing renovations. What is open to the public is dazzling. I don’t really care about planes other than the uniforms of their stewardesses, but funky colored lights showcasing worldly posters about interconnection and a watch used to keep Martian time are my kind of deal.
The Hirshhorn reminds the public that we wouldn’t have Infinity Rooms without sixties anti-war abstraction and naked people frolicking in the street. It was great finally seeing some of Yayoi Kusama’s work in person. An exhibition of contemporary Chinese photography really enlightened me. Work under dictatorship.

The Holocaust Museum is a uniquely exhausting experience. A necessary and perspective-expanding one, but still exhausting. You reach a point where you’re trying to comprehend a placard only to slowly realize that your brain can’t take any more comprehension to begin with. You experience a very unique kind of weight and gravity. Everyone should go once in their lives.

Movie Reviews: Lynch/Oz and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
This week I got to review 2 films, one narrative and one documentary:
Lynch/Oz
Alexandre O. Philippe has very quietly become one of the great pop culture documentarians of our time. The People Vs. George Lucas looked at the love/hate relationship between Lucas and his fans, Doc of the Dead looked at zombies in pop culture, 78/52 examined the shower scene in Psycho (read my review here), and Leap of Faith was William Friedkin talking about making The Exorcist (read my review here). But more than any subject Philippe is examining, his films are really a thesis about what it is to be a film geek who is fanatical about a film, filmmaker or genre. Now he is after an iconic filmmaker David Lynch and his connection to an iconic film The Wizard of Oz with the new doc Lynch/Oz, opening this week.
Tumblr media
movie poster
The overall doc is examining the influence that Oz had on Lynch and his work. Structurally it is set up into chapters, where each one has a different commentator (John Waters, Rodney Ascher,  Karyn Kusama and more) examining their perspective on that influence, intercutting with clips from Oz and Lynch’s films as well as other films.
This reminded me a ton of Rodney Ascher’s brilliant doc Room 237, where he examines theories and interpretations of The Shining each with a different commentator you don’t see only hear and they are connecting dots that may or may not be there, but you’re intrigued nonetheless. So it made perfect sense that Ascher was a commentator. Going into this, the immediate film I thought of was Lynch’s Wild at Heart, which is literally and visually referencing Oz. But after watching this doc, I feel like Oz’s DNA is all over so much of Lynch’s work in more ways than I saw upon first viewing. This is definitely a treat for fans of Lynch, but at times it might get a little academic for non-fans. But for someone like me who has inhaled so much of Lynch’s work, it’s worth checking out!

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
After countless iterations of Spider-Man movies (i.e. Sam Raimi’s trilogy, Marc Webb’s reboot, and Jon Watt’s reboot that plays into the MCU), 2018′s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was an animated story of Miles Morales and how he becomes Spider-Man in his universe and how he connects with other Spider People in parallel universes to defeat Kingpin. It was a breath of fresh air: the same Spider-Man story we’ve seen countless times already was now new again in a fresh, charming, and fun ride. Best of all, because it was about parallel universes, it didn’t disrupt the existing live-action Spider-Man movies of the last few years, so there was no confusion for fans. Into the Spider-Verse won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature and I named it my #7 Movie of 2018. Now the sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opens today.
Tumblr media
movie poster
Before I get into this movie, let me say I always try to avoid spoilers in movie reviews. That is going to be a challenge here. It’s not just about avoiding giving away the ending, there’s so much in the beginning and middle as well that are surprises and I don’t want to give too much away to ruin the fun. Here it goes: In this universe, Miles is a teen getting used to being Spider-Man. As he goes into other universes he meets with other Spider-People too. There is a master plan and when any Spider-Person does something that veers from that plan it could unravel the fabric of history. Other films like Back to the Future and that episode of Star Trek where they go back in time, have addressed this very same concept, but this one is packing it with more action and colorful visuals.
With my movie reviews, I usually attend press screenings (sometimes screeners), and for this particular one I got to bring my son, who is 7 and loved the last Spider-Verse movie. It was such a treat to be able to bring him and enjoy this movie with him! I did not feel like this was nearly as impressive a Into the Spider-Verse, but it definitely sustained the originality of the last one and more than anything there’s a sense of fun amidst the complex storylines and theories. For a big Summer franchise sequel, you could do a lot worse. Now (semi-spoiler ahead), this does suffer a little from middle-movie syndrome, where there’s no really beginning and no real ending unless you’re watching the trilogy as a whole. It’s hard for me to get critical without giving much away, but I kind of wanted some closure the way the other Spider-Man movies are stand-alone movies. Having said all this, this is one of the best super hero movies I’m likely to see this year!

Shiba Inu Goes Virtual: A Sneak Peek At The Upcoming SHIB Metaverse Project
Shiba Inu Goes Virtual: A Sneak Peek At The Upcoming SHIB Metaverse Project https://bitcoinist.com/shiba-inu-goes-virtual/ The Shiba Inu metaverse project is almost done unveiling the completed design of its newest hub, which is going to be called The Rocket Pond. The Shiba Inu team has announced some upcoming plans for the virtual world, including the reveal of Rocket Pond in the coming days and a tournament where players can win land. Rocket Pond is one of the 11 hubs that make up Shiba Inu’s metaverse project. The SHIB team first shared a black-and-white sketch of the Rocket Pond complex on September 13, 2022, according to reports. A colored design of the hub was released three days later to give users a taste of what the metaverse will look like when it debuts. Shiba Inu Makes Noise In The Metaverse The project, dubbed “SHIB: The Metaverse,” aims to increase the utility of the Shiba Inu environment. Shiba Inu developers announced in an update on Monday that it is scheduled to open in December of this year. In a blog post, the SHIB team explained that Rocket Pond was designed to both tell the narrative of the Shiba Inu through visuals and to evoke the feeling of a remote mountain resort. Get ready to uncover the secrets of Rocket Pond! Stay tuned to @mvshib and https://t.co/yPe8r4GQrl for an exclusive look at our #metaverse. Plus, don’t miss your chance to win some lands – there’s only a few days left to enter the contest! WOOF! https://t.co/SQSnW61rP3 — Shib (@Shibtoken) April 28, 2023 In addition, it takes inspiration from a number of well-known locations, such as Lake Tahoe and Cape Canaveral, in its building design. “Get ready to uncover the secrets of Rocket Pond! Stay tuned [for] an exclusive look at our metaverse. Plus, don’t miss your chance to win some lands – there’s only a few days left to enter the contest! WOOF!” The phrase “metaverse” refers to a virtual environment where users can engage in completely immersive and interconnected interactions with other users and digital items. It functions like a sizable virtual reality space that anyone with the necessary technology can access online. Avatars are used in this virtual environment for a wide variety of purposes, including but not limited to gaming, socializing, shopping, and even working. The metaverse has the potential to radically alter the ways in which people communicate and engage with online material in the future of the internet. Some 100,595 plots of land will be created by users for the Shiba Inu Metaverse project. With the help of their plots, landowners can gather materials for the game and earn rewards. A method of financial reward is also in the works, and developers want to make sure each participant has their own workspace for construction and management. Metaverse Market Expanding Shytoshi Kusama, the alias of the SHIB developer who revealed a poster-like image at the SXSW music festival last month, claimed it showed a glimpse of the metaverse as seen in the game. Meanwhile, the global metaverse market was worth $65.5 billion in 2022, according to Statista. This is projected to reach $82 billion in 2023, and then soar to $937 billion by 2030. At the time of writing, SHIB was trading at $0.00001028, up 0.42% in the last seven days, data from crypto market tracker CoinMarketCap shows. -Featured image from Marca via Bitcoinist.com https://bitcoinist.com April 29, 2023 at 04:40PM

5 Shocking Facts About Yayoi Kusama's Art Career That Will Blow Your Mind!
Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese contemporary artist, has gained worldwide recognition for her unique artistic style, characterized by her use of polka dots and mirrored rooms. In this article, we will reveal five shocking facts about her art career that will leave you amazed.
II. Early Life and Struggles Yayoi Kusama was born in Matsumoto, Japan, in 1929. Growing up in a conservative family, she faced disapproval and even physical abuse from her mother, who was against her pursuing a career in art. Despite these challenges, Kusama persisted, ultimately leaving Japan for New York City in the late 1950s.
III. Infinity Mirrors - The Mirrored Rooms Kusama's Infinity Mirror rooms are one of her most iconic works. These rooms create an immersive, endless reflection through the use of mirrors, lights, and sculptures, symbolizing the idea of infinite space and the artist's obsession with self-obliteration.
IV. Polka Dots - The Artistic Signature Polka dots have become Kusama's signature motif. She has incorporated them into Yayoi Kusama Poster, sculptures, and installations throughout her career. For Kusama, polka dots represent the universe, infinity, and her own struggle with mental health issues.
V. Yayoi's Mental Health and Art Kusama has openly discussed her lifelong struggle with mental illness, specifically hallucinations and obsessive thoughts. Her art has been a therapeutic outlet, allowing her to transform her anxieties and fears into creative expressions.

Kalila Cameron
My promotion module personal strategies will take the form of numerous platforms and approaches that best suit my own practice. This will push forward the success of my own practice and my degree show. There will be a blend of both group and individual promotional strategies, as when prepping for a degree show there must be a group element to it, to ensure clarity and a successful show. Firstly, I am going to discuss my personal promotional strategies. I started this project by doing research on what resources I could use to my best ability; this is when I began my research on the artists union and their benefits for practicing contemporary artists. By joining, I cannot just be part of a community of creators but also have protection in terms of legal matters, fair pay, and employment. Further, through this source I managed to enrol in a series of lectures in relation to social practice, which is my further point of education once I complete my degree. I will attend QMU University to study an MA in Applied Arts and Social Practice. This lecture series has given me the opportunity to contact other practitioners working in community arts. It has also enabled me to make targets and have very realistic expectations of what it will be like to work in social practice-based spaces. Secondly, to inform my personal further practice and my degree show, I have been viewing exhibition spaces, visually analysing their dynamic and ways they are presented. Yayoi Kusama, Infinity Mirror Rooms, located at the Tate Modern in London, has been the most influential in the way it functions as a timeline through the larger space, you travel through with constant awareness of the surroundings, although upon reaching the exit it feels sudden. This has prompted me, to seek to display my sculptures in a space like a stairwell, in a communal area or dotted around an occupied area. I am currently seeking locations to do so, after the degree show. Furthermore, this is making me think about the degree show space and the ways I can display them within the confines of that designated space, this will require me to work with my peers, and find an agreed upon area for all, as this is a shared experience, not individual. As I group, I hope to establish a floor plan, a guest list to send out emails, and posters around the building and inner Glasgow to advertise. This will all require planning, and price estimates etc. Lastly, I have created an artist website that functions as a portfolio of my most recent projects. This is in parallel to my own professional Instagram account this depicts a more detailed profile of work. These platforms alongside my own business email will be featured and printed in small business cards, that will sit alongside my sculptures at the degree show. Noteworthy through my research period has been the Documents of Contemporary arts, Practice, 2018 text.
