but suin loved the song so much, that she begged him to release it so she could listen to it

this is SO late, rina, i am so sorry. life is kind of busy lately, which is surprising because usually i am really lethargic in summer. the heat makes me just miserable, lmao. my frail body is absolutely not made to withstand these temperatures. very happy that it has cooled down in germany, tho (can't you relate?).

anyways. i had to let the album sit a little, return to it after a few days of not obsessively listening to it, but! it turns out my opinion remains the same. cinderella is my favorite bside on the album. i have a massive bone to pick with sm putting the unfinished song on the album (apparently having rectified that mistake for streaming, but it'll remain the unfinished song on the physical albums. like. lol, sm? you wanna chat?) but, whatever. god, i loved that song on initial first listen, and i still love it so much. it's soooooo pleasing to the ear, it sounds like it could have been on love shot, or like a little brother to lotto in a way? it's just. such a sleek, perfect little number. jongdae sounds marvelous here, i mean, when does he not but it is truly one of his best vocal takes. baekhyun and kyungsoo do such marvelous adlibs here, especially kyungsoo's right after baekhyun's riff, it actually. like. had me make a noise while i was walking home, lmao. his voice is just SO. so. it's like velvet. this is why kyungsoo could NEVER be in another group; no other group could compliment the tone of his voice as well as exo.

i also love no make up and love fool. once again, kyungsoo has just outrageously good vocal takes here, i love his little runs and trills. he is just so tonally solid. makes me crazy. no make up is the perfect r&b slow jam, very sexy, very tame, i need that bass boosted and deep enough to feel in my chest. minseok also sounds wonderful here, especially his harmony with baekhyun in the second verse (xiubaek serve). the outro of this song is just delicious. sehun has grown SO much as a performer, as a singer and as a rapper, and i never wanna hear a bad fucking word about him ever again.

love that on me kinda slay that is love fool; that post-chorus break down is soooooo cunty. LITERALLY, just. like. on me. a serve.

btw, i loved hear me out as a pre-release track but it is even better in the entire album; it makes so much sense now that this song would be on the album, it just fits perfectly. mwah. let me in, by the way, is number 2 on my on repeat right now, because i just think it is a perfect ballad. i just love that song and i reckon i will always love it.

Hey, so here’s my lil’ mini review of Kyungsoo's 2nd mini-album Expectation after listening to the whole thing twice:

Somebody: The chorus scared tf outta me first time I heard it lol, 'cause it was so loud and emotional compared to the first verse. Song was okay/good--I wish his voice wasn't so monotonous during the verses tbh tho but the chorus with the 'I love you-ooh-hoo' is very nice. And the song's kinda Western pop in a way too.

Wonder: This man loves a good acoustic song lol. Anyways, this song feels like Rose 2.0 in a way with the cutesy vibe. Made me smile hehe, especially with that very uplifting chorus! During the very start of the 2nd chorus he really sounded like Baekhyun for a sec, like the two of them sound so similar at times it's amazing xD. Anyways, he sounds so beautiful especially when he's singing during that bridge <333.

I Do: So, I ofc heard this first from the pre-release mv and still think it's so cute hehe. Not much to say but it's a nice vibe~

Lost: The chord progression…I immediately knew it'd be a vibe. Looove the chorus--like wow he's finally doing sumn besides (the still very nice) strummed guitar accompaniments lol. Love the harmonies that accompany him when he sings 'I'm lost in you'. Anyways, this is another song that gives a more Western indie rock/alternative vibe and I know I'mma listen to this a LOT.

Ordinary Days: I kinda zoned out while listening to this song during the first listen. During the second listen though, I was really vibing with it--it's so calm and I found myself just singing along randomly with the melody and his beautiful Oohs~ Only thing I think is that it def shouldn't have come right after a lowkey Rock song like Lost--could've been the album ender instead. Still, with the guitar and bass in the background--this could be a sister song to Grey Suit by Junmyeon :3.

The View: Was a just okay song tbh. Even with the unexpected runs at the end of every 'you' and 'the view', I wasn't feeling it compared to the other songs. So, this is the one song I'd skip on this album.

Lost - Acoustic Version: What did I say about him loving acoustic songs lol. I think I may put this version a step above the Rock version actually 'cause his voice is so clear here, like it's nice getting to hear him sing and just belt out his notes during the chorus. His emotion when he sings is what really carries a song, like he makes it Rock besides the obvious chord progression the guitar's going thru hehe. And so, as the album closer…I still think Ordinary Days shoulda been that but this did give a feeling of wanting more (in a good way) so that's always good.

And so my favs from this album in order are: Wonder, Lost - Acoustic version, Lost, Ordinary Days, I do, Somebody >>>>>>>>[a short wall], The View

TL;DR: So, overall it was a nice album! If I had to choose between this and his first album tho I think I'd still choose his first one (that one was truly no skip to me and had him singing in 3 diff languages so I'm biased lol) but there are some good-ass songs on this album still! I'd def rec listening to it to vibe and relax some <3.

 he  doesn’t  know  what  he’s  done  to  turn  the  atmosphere  into  this.  from  the  moment  he  woke  to  when  he  went  to  get  the  door,  what  could’ve  possible  gone  wrong  for  things  to  crumble  into  this?  there  have  been  undercurrents,  though,  the  mood  swings  shown  by  eden  that  have  confused  him  but  not  to  this  extent.  “what  makes  you  think  it’s  some  kind  of  game?”  ​is  this  a  game  to  eden,  to  make  him  feel  cared  for  only  to  break  away  from  him  in  a  second’s  notice?  if  it’s  some  form  of  loyalty  test,  it’s  bullshit.  “i  almost  died  for  you  —  what  more  do  you  want  from  me?”  he  could  lie  to  himself  that  it’s  all  part  of  the  job,  throwing  himself  to  the  line  of  fire  to  keep  eden  safe  —  he  did  —  but  it’s  more  than  that.  more  than  what  his  head  could  make  sense  of,  more  than  what  his  heart  was  allowed  to  feel.  i  don’t  need  you,  eden’s  words  ring  in  his  ears  —  what  if  i  do,  what  if  i  need  you?  it  doesn’t  matter,  now.  it  shouldn’t  matter.  what  is  eden  acting  like  he’s  committed  an  unforgivable  crime,  when  all  he’s  done  this  past  week  was  letting  him  near?  it’s  all  a  mistake  —  is  this  what  eden  wants  him  to  understand?  “the  only  one  who’s  punishing  you  is  yourself.”  he  answers  sternly,  before  reaching  for  the  first  aid  kit  still  on  his  nightstand  and  scrambling  for  the  tweezer.  eden’s  growing  pale  with  the  blood  rushing  out  —  he  can  struggle  all  he  wants  but  he’ll  lose  it.  kyungsoo  begins  the  task  of  removing  the  shards  after  cleaning  the  tool  in  haste,  uncaring  for  eden’s  waning  fight  when  his  clutch  steadies  the  injured  hand.  it’s  something  he’s  familiar  with,  patching  himself  up  after  a  rampage.  but  the  way  his  heart  aches  is  foreign  —  this  is  what  happens  when  he’s  foolish  enough  to  lay  it  bare.  “ten  more  minutes.”  just  to  tie  up  the  loose  ends.  “then  i’ll  disappear.”

Who is the most affectionate? I believe both are but Kyungsoo takes the initiative more often and Taeil reacts into it without thinking about it. So it’s like those cases of a couple that acts like a couple of more than friends but are actually just friends but also have fast food combos named on their honor and yeah, clowns!

Who initiates the handholding? Kyungsoo initiates the hugs and Taeil does the handholding. When they are outside and there’s something that catches Taeil’s attention, his fingers thread naturally into Kyungsoo's and he drags them to the object of his attention and it stays that way the rest of the time. Even when they are watching movies, Taeil initiates the handholding if they aren’t already hugging/cuddling.

Who worries more for the other? Taeil does because he can sense there are odd silences coming from Kyungsoo's side and those bruises and cuts just add more worry to his brain :c

Who is more likely to ask for help? I think both have a hard time communicating they need help for important things to not trouble/worry each other :( Taeil may be a bit more open in this if it’s something not that troublesome like asking Kyungsoo to check his rehearsals and choreos and voice his opinion but outside from that? not so much ;A;

Who leaves little love notes for the other? I can see Kyungsoo doing these, specially when Taeil had important presentations. He probably got Taeil’s fav drink (apple juice) often in those days and put a cute message on it before handing it over and Taeil smiled like an idiot every time and felt his heart race and and and— clowns!

Who can’t sleep unless the other is there? Both do. The moment one awakes before the other, the other wakes up soon enough if the warmth is gone. I guess these are also dysfunctional kittens?

He knows Kyungsoo sometimes overthinks things and doesn’t voice out all he wants because he doesn’t deserve it so yeah, he will do something real romantic and have a speech and all (that he will forget) and may probably almost lose the ring— but he will do all that looking at Kyungsoo in the eye and saying he loves him and cannot wait to build a life together as husbands 

Who introduced the other to their family first? Both are orphans and after they meet again, Taeil brings him over for dinner and it becomes a common occurrence that they spend a lot of time over Taeil’s whenever they have time and don’t feel like going outside (even when Kyungsoo had bfs). Taeil probably doesn’t know much about Kyungsoo’s mother but may have an idea that things are not very sweet in Kyungsoo’s side of the road :c

Who is more likely to play with the other’s hair? Both do! Honestly, they are so enamored with the smallest detail of each other that it should be glaringly obvious they are made for each other yet we are in this freaking circus 🤡

Who makes sure the other has meals/stays hydrated? Kyungsoo does. He knows Taeil is a hazard in the kitchen and doesn’t eat as well as he should if he doesn’t take him out to grab his meals when the rest of his brothers are busy OTL in reality, Taeil is not that useless in the kitchen if he focuses but he haaaates eating alone so he grabs quick things when no one will have a meal with him at home :c

Who is more likely to stand up to anyone for the other? Both do but Kyungsoo tends to react quicker. Taeil is more clueless about these situations but if the situation calls for it, he will stand in front of Kyungsoo to protect him <3

Kyungsoo likes to surprise him too but Taeil can plan the craziest things specially when Kyungsoo seems moody just so he can help him take his mind off things. At this time, Kyungsoo will have passed through a myriad of crazy options Taeil thinks are fun—

He thinks it’s like having found a treasure map and every stop holds a secret he tucks in and relishes in with all his might.

a few thoughts on kyungsoo and his problematic habits

so kyungsoo’s characterisation is based on his two personalities. the charming bartender who sweet talks and charms his way into everyone’s heart and the underground fighter that looks too furious and intimidating and no sane person will dare to come close, unless they are looking for the thrill of breaking oneself just like he does

he started fighting in a ring for money as a young runaway unable to pay rent in the city with shitty part-time jobs so he turns to things that were less than legal. but before that he’s always been fond of fighting, of using it as a means to cope with his anger and externalise it so his inside wouldn’t hurt so much

his background growing up affected him so much and continues even now. to watch all these kids grow next to him and get adopted one by one. the belief that: you're no one unless you are loved. and if he's not loved, then he must be no one and when he finally gets the chance to be part of someone's family after years of anticipating and imagining how good it will FINALLY be, he never got the love he thought he would cause his adoptive mother only used him as a replacement for her dead son and of course, he could never measure up despite his best effort to be perfect. 

in a way, fighting was his own form of punishment of not measuring up, of not being someone good enough for love. a way to translate all that self hate into something tangible and visible. something that makes sense. a way to rationalise the neglect and emotional abuse. that his acting out was what made him unloveable to the one person whose approval he craved the most, because the thought that even his best, most high-achieving self is not enough to make him something worthy to love is a thought too cruel to believe in 

it's only until he polished himself completely, engineered his personality the way artists perfect their craft through countless redos and edits that he saw a change. kept the angry, brittle parts far from sight and only the charms to the front that he's somewhat loved. not by his mother but everyone else, boys and girls ( puberty helps too ) and for once, he feels happy or something close to it. he's finally that /someone/ he's wanted to be for so long, someone loved and it's only achievable by fragmentation, by separating and hiding parts of himself

it’s why he’s so good at winning people over but never keeping them. how he lures them in with pleasing words and sweet smiles, but withdraws every time they get too close, close enough to see the ugly parts. it’s why he’s so image conscious, obsessed with the things he wears and being in great shape that people call him vain and why his instagram is, simply put, a curated thirst trap that morphs him as the perfect subject of desires

compartmentalising has been his coping mechanism for so long. these are the pretty parts that people love him for, these are the ugly parts that can never be seen. this is what must happen when those parts are seen and this is the time he retreats and puts back the defences around himself. rinse and repeat. it's such a flawed cognitive style but it's what's kept him sane for so long and the reactions he gets from the world only ever affirm his beliefs

as long as he is around people, he’ll never heal, not the way he needs to. he’ll only continue to live on superficial praises and fixate on keeping his appearance perfect without working on what’s underneath. only continues to live off other people like parasite, rely on their love and care to fill the void and never learn how to be content with himself. to be comfortable with silence without the noise he uses to distract himself. to look into the mirror and love all parts of him, not just the pretty ones. to stop measuring his worth by external perceptions. but this is not a point that he’ll reach until he goes through something tremendous enough to make him see how messed up it truly is, how he really needs help to keep him from ruining himself. no one can save him unless he wants to save himself ( and no one is obligated to ), unless he sees the need to save himself from all the fucked up things that are so, so ingrained in his head

one moment she was cutting vegetables for the soup that she was making for herself (possibly a little more for kyungsoo to have.) and in the next moment she’s on the floor. or at least, she was expecting the floor. there was no root cause to her fainting-- okay, that was a lie. midterms were coming up and she wouldn’t want to take a break. she locked herself inside of her room most of the time, the occasional knock at her door when kyungsoo checks up on her. she’d be welcomed with a tray of food, her favorite snacks, and even sticky notes that pushed her through. a smile displayed on her face before walking over to slide some notes under his door-- thank you notes and stuff to push him through work as well.

did she not drink enough water? she wasn’t sure herself, her days mixed in with each other. it was a thursday, unable to say what certain date it was. all she knew was that there were empty spaces before hitting the written square in her planner-- the big day where one out of two tests compiled her total grade. medical school was even more insane that undergrad, she knew that. not only did she have tests, but she had labs and everything else in between. it must be her overworking her body before collapsing into kyungsoo’s arms where she lay now. it was good timing, would she have preferred the floor instead?

there’s a wet cloth against her head now, the sight of him dabbing along her face. “o-oh..” she catches his words and it makes her feel dizzy - as if she had just gotten off the spinning teacups at an amusement park. they were words of comfort, making her body feel warm, the usual red tint appearing on her face. “thanks.. for catching me. uh..” she looks away, ashamed that he had to witness that in the first place.

i saw that post about what rookie exo were capable of and i hate how shady people are towards suho in the tags because chenbaeksoo overshadow him… just because they’re better vocalists doesn’t mean he sucks or is “mediocre at everything”.

oh, lmao. huh. i don't really give those people much thought, to be honest, but i understand your aggravation. that baby don't cry performance in particular (and those 55 seconds) is, of course, very much about kyungsoo and baekhyun having all but a sing off in the adlibs. but that isn't the only thing happening; there are of course chanyeol and junmyeon as well, who, while kyungsoo and baekhyun are adlibbing for their lives, are harmonizing with the others and carrying the melody. doing that might seem easy but is not, especially not to someone untrained. the fact that, as rookies, exo were able to harmonize with each other like that and perform live like that is quite an achievement. only a handful groups could do that. it's pretty much unparalleled in that regard.

that said, it's quite funny. i remember when i watched the other performance, where jongdae is included, before i ever was a proper exol, and my first commentary was that jongdae actually oversings quite a lot. he did that back in the day, as did baekhyun to a certain extent (but less so). in my opinion, the most tonally solid and musical singer out of all of exo was kyungsoo at that point. they have all grown out of their more obvious mistakes, especially jongdae; at this point i would consider him the best vocalist in exo. kyungsoo and baekhyun both have an unrivaled musicality though, and kyungsoo only ever gets the short end of the stick because his voice sits lower than jongdae's and baekhyun's so he rarely gets the highest adlibs (which means people don't care about him as a vocalist as much, lol). his riffs are bar none, and let's not forget the day he made the others his back up singers at MAMA 2014. (i listen to his live recording of tell me what is love religiously. it is one of the most stunning performances anyone has ever done, imo. the fact that yoo youngjin did this with him? with a rookie? insanity. that is a testament to how good kyungsoo is.)

anyways, junmyeon. people don't care about vocalists that aren't super flashy, so this is never a surprise to me. i have talked about how vocally skilled junmyeon is multiple times; he is a renowned musical actor, after all. that alone should tell you everything you need to know about how good of a singer he is. junmyeon has this high, lyrical tenor that is less nasal than baekhyun's. to me, it's always like a bell ringing, like, that's how crystal clear he sounds. his vocal quality is kind of insanely underrated. when he delivers his adlibs in tempo, for example, they sound crazily effortless and so laid back and easy, as opposed to what baekhyun and jongdae are doing (which serves a different purpose and isn't any less good). like. we are talking about the man who crammed not one but two key changes into his 10 second verse in the eve at the top of the show. (the eve is one of my top 3 exo songs btw.) that isn't just something anyone can do. it requires a certain tonality, and junmyeon has tonality in spades, which i find very envious. he is very rarely off-key, and when i saw him live he wasn't pitchy once. his soundcheck was incredibly good. so, like. evidently i can talk about this kinda forever? but where to stop? the baseline is that these people refuse to give junmyeon the flowers he deserves because he isn't as centered as chenbaeksoo but that doesn't make him any worse of a singer. he is far from mediocre, lmao. he is a very, very good singer. in any other group, junmyeon would be a main vocal. exo is just an embarrassment of riches.
