So I just finished 2x3 of Strange New Worlds and I am not okay. La’An cannot keep this to herself please tell me she talks to someone about it. And omg Kirk (Paul Wesley does an amazing job as Kirk btw he is the next best choice to William Shatner.)

Just, yeah this is a lot and I am feeling the emotions. And I really really want La’An to be okay. She shouldn’t have to bear this on her own. (Also Adelaide Kane was a pleasant surprise. I’m happy for her that she got to be in not just Star Trek, but one of the best Star Treks shows.)

Oh. And I hate time-keeping authorities/organizations. They are insufferable and the worst. Honestly kinda hate that Starfleet makes a division for that. (And doesn’t that mean the alternate Kelvin movies never actually happened then?)

Much more a fan of time just being a force. Like how if Pike doesn’t die then Spock gets his fate no matter what and the galaxy is worse of for it.

I only have praise for how they’re writing Jim Kirk in SNW. Though perhaps I’m biased because i love this character.

Admittedly, at first, I didn’t like the guy. I thought Wesley was a terrible casting choice. he didn’t have the passion that Shatner and Pine gave him, and frankly just didn’t have the look for me.

But Wesleys Kirk is pulling out that soft, kind hearted nerd that we all know Kirk is.

In La’Ans AR, he listens to Sera despite her being “unhinged,” he smoothly steps forward to put himself between Sera and La’An and sacrifices himself to save the timeline- to save Sam.

Then the real Kirk, despite getting decked, thinks first of Uhura and doesnt want her to have to explain the hallucinations. He doesn’t write Uhura off either like Chapel and Spock did , he believes her. And then inserts himself into the problem because, as La’An said, hes “the type of person who cant walk past a stranger in need”. and then sticks around to make sure she is okay.

So yeah, maybe Wesley isn’t who would come to my mind initially for Kirk, but i love his interpretation of him. His Kirk cares deeply for others and thats the Kirk i know and love. Im looking forward to how they develop his relationship with Spock.

I know why Kirk opened up to La’an

Okay so as many of you are acutely aware, strange new worlds has a bit that annoyed me a lot when it came to Kirk. It was when La’an met actual Kirk in person and, after some banter where La’an poked fun at Kirk’s need to help anyone, even a stranger, he started talking about his past and why he does it.

This bothered me because Kirk doesn’t talk about his past in tos or the movies outside of what the person he’s talking to is already aware of.

Ever.

He’s more protective of his trauma than freaking Spock.

But then I realized today, Kirk explains this to La’an because she already knew.

Sort of.

The alternate version of Kirk had to explain a lot of stuff about himself to La’an in order to help fix the timeline. Where he was born, how he grew up, etc. And our Kirk felt the connection with her that his alternate self made. In other words, he had a feeling La’an already knew. Even though she technically didn’t.

So our Kirk felt he could talk about it with her.

Am I making excuses for writers who likely forgot/didn’t notice this detail with Kirk? Most likely. But hey, I gotta cope with this massive inconsistency.

What I love about Paul is he gets Jim’s charm so right. 😭 I was looking through the many screencaps of the show, and I could literally see Mr. Stack of Books with legs. He gets Jim’s general sweetness, his quick thinking, and his serious side. 😭💀 ❤️
