I made a slideshow to go along with Everett Ruess's Poem, Wilderness Song. It features places he went to & things he wrote about: The Sierra Nevadas, Cali coast, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Monument Valley, & the desert sands of the American Southwest.

Hello, world!
Tumblr media
My name is Katie, I use they/them pronouns, and I am one of the co-hosts of Bisexual Breakdown. I have been taking part in fandom in some manner since I was a pre-teen. I am also going to be running the social media posts for this podcast so if you see us on social, that was likely posted by me! I love to read, write, bake, and do photography, and I take part in these hobbies both within and out of fandom. You can also catch me on discord, where I help run some fandom servers, as well as a server dedicated to LGBTQIA+ media which I created. If you couldn't guess, I am extremely dedicated to the telling and spreading of LGBTQIA+ stories. I'm excited to start this podcast journey where I can share my own voice as well as the voices of others
Tumblr media
I'm Serena, my pronouns are she/her, I'm BIPOC and queer and I'm the other co-host of Bisexual Breakdown. My academic and professional background is in politics and human rights. I enjoy travel and I love history and culture and marveling at human civilization and all the ways we're so different but also fundamentally the same. I'm a voracious consumer of pop culture, particularly media that is nerdy and queer, but I find something to enjoy about almost every genre. I just love all kinds of stories! I write both original fiction and transformative works (i.e. fanfic) and run a creative community server on Discord. I've always been a fannish person but I hadn't been that active in fandom until the last few years; I kind of just existed on the periphery and observed it for decades like an anthropologist. I look forward to having interesting conversations about the evolution of fandom culture and its intersection with social movements and the broader media landscape, and specifically the different ways people, especially LGBTQIA+ folks, interact with it!

Top Surgery June 2023 Recovery Fund & Countdown!!!!
⭐ ☀️ 🌻 ✨
🗡️ 33 DAYS REMAIN 🗡️
. email | ko-fi | photos | insta .
*im going to try to keep this post updated; see below for a shorter one you can reblog!*
insurance will cover my procedure, but I have to travel for surgery as well as for my follow up/postop appts, I have existing health conditions that require extra care/supplies, and I need button up shirts etc, and all that along with my usual living expenses in the meantime!!
my disability application is 90% processed and I am anticipating a denial any day now. i may choose not to appeal it, but until that happens, I cant look for a job anyway; basically what I have available to me is art sales, a bit of freelancing, and begging for donations. this post is about that :)
.・。.・゜✭・. Ways You Can Help!!!! .・✫・゜・。.
Buy something from my Ko-Fi Shop! I currently have 5 pairs of needle minders available as well as slots for customs! I may also list some stitch markers and earrings soon! I also occasionally sell the beloved Fuck Off keychains via Glitter & Gleam Co. I'm working on a Pride flag series for June, so stay tuned & do feel free to drop a flag request you'd like to see!!! :) I may also be open to making customs of the FO keychains just bc they are fun.
Buy me a coffee or leave a tip just bc you like me! Ko-Fi also gives me this option, so if you're sympathetic to my cause but you don't need OOAK trinkets and craft supplies, feel free to donate! (Venmo and Paypal are also idleseas!)
Hire me for transcription/captioning! I've got 8 years of experience doing every subject from medical to legal to corporate to podcasts to video captions & subs, and I type verbatim at 130wpm. $1.50 per audio min, usually 24hr or less turnaround. Shoot me an email if interested!
Hire me as a photographer! This one's a long shot, but if you're in Michigan and you need an LGBT-friendly photographer for any reason, I'm your huckleberry! I'm on the west coast, but Im willing to travel a bit within reason, since, it's Michigan. (Seriously, you name it, I'm down: events, drag shows, live music/album art, pets/animals, senior pics, engagement/wedding, products, boudoir, real estate- I've even done remembrance/stillborn photos and retouching.)
Buy photo prints or other junk from Redbubble! Working on this one! Note to self!
Buy me something off my Amazon WL! I am considering sharing this but seeing as I live in a very small, remote, rural town and have a very distinct deadname so maybe pm me about this if we're mutuals? feedback welcome if you have another idea or reassurance abt this lol
Follow my photo blog or Insta accounts! If you can't send any money, hey, I get it. in this economy? yikes. the good news is, I also benefit vastly from moral support! I post a lot of my landscape photos right here on tumblr at @idleseas (not to toot my own horn or anything but. im good) rattiebastard @ IG is my personal insta where I post my art & creations, sales, life updates, and goofy stuff like memes. idle_seas @ IG is my photo account, mostly nature photography and info about the Great Lakes.
Boost my current donation or sales post! Currently it's this one! Reblogs are free and always greatly appreciated :) I LOOK like an account with a lot of followers but trust me, in reality, my blog is just super old.
Good old fashioned kind messages of support also do wonders! anon is currently (ON), so remember Thumper's golden rule: if you can't say something nice, then shut the hell up and don't make me regret this! :)

My media this week (25 Sep-1 Oct 2022)
Tumblr media
🎶 🎶it's the moooost wonderful time of the year🎶 🎶
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
🥰👂‍ Hallowe'en Party (Hercule Poirot #41) (Agatha Christie, author; Hugh Fraser, narrator) - I just really love Ariadne Oliver. Absolutely bonkers nonsense plot. So full of 'the youth today is terrible' stuff but for some reason I just find it amusing in this
🥰👂‍ A Little Light Mischief (The Turners #3.5) (Cat Sebastian, author; Morag Sims, narrator) - adore this novella about Molly (former thief, now lady's maid) & Alice (wrongfully disowned) who team up to be gay and do crime (as reparative justice)
🥰 Stately Homes of Wiltshire (waspabi) - Drarry, 57K, more magical house stuff, on the more lighthearted side (but not without its share of angst)
🥰👂‍ The Body In The Library (Miss Marple #2) (Agatha Christie, author; Stephanie Cole, narrator) - Stephanie Cole is the perfect narrator for Miss Marple
😍 This, You Protect (Infinite Coffee & Protection Detail #1) (owlet) - 64K, recovering WS Stucky, one of the preeminent classics in the Stucky fandom featuring Cat Eleanor, The Olds, grilled cheeses and sheep pj pants - reread because it's been over 2 years
😍 Team-Building Exercises (Infinite Coffee & Protection Detail #2) (owlet) - 22K, vignettes and short one-shots of the first year of recovery after contact; delightful on its own but made to wrap around the longer sequel
💖💖 +223K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
all i need from you (is all your love) (wearing_tearing) - Stranger Things: Steddie, 34K - just a sweet canon-divergent AU with two loveable dumbasses falling for each other
Behind the Lens and Eye of the Beholder (rhysiana) - TW: Sterek, 2K & 8K - AU where Derek is a landscape photographer - the first is their meet cute, the 2nd is their camping and photography date; a truly delightful AU
Here Lies Steve Rogers, Death By Bucky Barnes (fingerprintbruises) - MCU: Stucky, 11K - oblivious friends/roommates to lovers via accidental dick pics
Keep It for Me (stereobone) - Stranger Things: Steddie, 9K - no one's seen Eddie for 7 years since he was whisked off to witness protection but he resurfaces again for Lucas & Max's wedding

They say the saddest song is the one that’s never been written. But for me, the saddest phrase in the entire English language isn’t a melody, it’s a whisper — “I used to.”
Three little words, strung together, that carry the weight of a thousand unspoken stories.
I used to love spending entire Saturdays curled up with a good book, getting lost in fantastical worlds. Now, the thought of staring at a page for minutes feels exhausting.
Maybe it’s the fatigue of modern life, the constant barrage of information, or perhaps just a shift in priorities. Whatever the reason, the joy of getting swept away in a story feels like a distant memory.
There are hobbies that used to be my haven — painting landscapes that blossomed with vibrant colors, the quiet hum of focus as my brush stroked the canvas.
Now, the paints sit untouched, their vibrancy a stark contrast to the dull ache of creative stagnation. Did the passion fade? Did life simply steal the time?
“I used to…” hangs heavy in the air, a question mark with no easy answer.
The things we love are often intertwined with the people we love. Remember those Friday night movie marathons with my best friend, fueled by endless bowls of popcorn and whispered secrets?
Now, scattered across different cities, lives taking on new shapes, those nights seem like a scene from a bygone era. “I used to…” takes on a tinge of loneliness, a yearning for a simpler time when connection seemed effortless.
But here’s the thing — “I used to…” doesn’t have to be a death knell for joy. Maybe the spark for reading has dimmed, but perhaps it’s time to explore audiobooks or podcasts that ignite my curiosity in a different way. Maybe the paints are gathering dust, but can I find a creative outlet in something new — photography, pottery, or even journaling?
As for those cherished friendships, distance doesn’t have to diminish the bond. Technology bridges the geographical gap, allowing for virtual movie nights or simply catching up on life’s twists and turns.
“I used to…” can transform into “I still cherish,” a reminder that some connections transcend time and space.
The truth is, change is inevitable. Our interests evolve, our priorities shift, and the things that once brought us joy might need to be revisited in new light. “I used to…” can be a springboard for rediscovery. It can prompt us to explore what sparks joy now, what ignites our passions in this current chapter of life.
Maybe the old hobbies won’t be revived, the worn teddy bear won’t be the source of comfort anymore. But that doesn’t mean there’s no room for new loves, new connections, and new experiences that paint our lives with vibrant colors.
Perhaps the echoes of “I used to…” can lead seamlessly into an exciting symphony of “I am now discovering…”

Blog 5: No prompt… uh oh
This week’s blog post really had me stumped. It can be really challenging to write without a prompt. Since this week we have been learning about nature interpretation through science I thought I would start with some opinions on that. Science provides us with the tools to decipher the language of nature. Through observation, experimentation, and analysis, we have been able to uncover ‘mysteries’ of how the world works around us. One of the most compelling aspects of scientific interpretation is its ability to reveal the interconnectedness of all living things. I think that this is a big topic that has been covered through so many of my courses throughout my time as a student here at Guelph. It has allowed for a deeper understanding of how the decisions we make on a day-to-day basis can have a rippling effect throughout nature. Scientific interpretation empowers us to become stewards of the environment. By understanding the impact of human activities on natural systems, we can make informed decisions that promote sustainability and conservation.
The second thing I will do some rambling about is the podcasts that we have all been working on. I love podcasts. Even more than I love blog posts. I think they are such a fun and effective medium for communication that can be used for so many purposes. From education to entertainment, podcasts can cover pretty much anything you can think of. It's also a great tool for people who are auditory learners, rather than visual. I think that since COVID-19, using different methods of communicating ideas has become more prominent as face-to-face was no longer an option.
My final topic for this post is going to be about photojournalism, another form of communicating scientific information, specifically about nature, to the masses. I recently visited the ROM with my mother to see the wildlife photography exhibit currently running. There was a wide variety of photos on display, ranging from fungi to underwater organisms to impressive landscapes. It reminded me how much there is on our planet. In addition, there was a feature wall dedicated to photojournalism. The photos highlighted a lot of environmental issues, as well as the mistreatment of animals, and called for a change to prevent these from happening. The one I found the most alarming was a series of photos showing some of the hunting trends, competitions, and festivals that occur in Texas celebrating hunting for sport. It was disturbing to learn about how glamourized these activities are. Photos are a powerful tool, with the ability to evoke thoughts and emotion, tell a story, and even call for a change - the phrase a picture is worth a thousand words could not be more true.
P.S. The photos from the exhibit are featured on the British natural history museum website if anyone wants to check them out!
