If a hungry little traveler shows up at your house, you might want to give him a cookie. If you give him a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk. He'll want to look in a mirror to make sure he doesn't have a milk mustache, and then he'll ask for a pair of scissors to give himself a trim... The consequences of giving a cookie to this energetic mouse run the young host ragged, but readers of all ages will come away smiling at the antics that tumble like dominoes through the pages of this delightful picture book.

This was supposed to just be a rough sketch, but then I started getting really invested in it.
I hadn't initially intended to include so many picture book characters, but the nostalgia was overwhelming. Does anyone remember the animated short films produced by Weston Woods? My local library used to have a bunch of them on the Scholastic VHS tapes from the late 90s. (I know some shorts were released on the Children's Circle VHS tapes back in the 80s (🎶 Come on along! Come on along! Join the caravan!), and some were packaged in Sammy's Story Shop in 2008.)
Characters:
Max, from Where the Wild Things Are, written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak
Peter, from The Snowy Day, written and illustrated by Ezra Jack Keats
Brother Bear and Sister Bear, from The Berenstain Bears series, written and illustrated by Stan and Jan Berenstain
Pooh and Piglet, from the Winnie-the-Pooh books, by A. A. Milne, illustrated by E. H. Shepard
Owen, from Owen, written and illustrated by Kevin Henkes.
Mouse, from If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, by Laura Joffe Numeroff, illustrated by Felicia Bond
Louis, from The Trumpet of the Swan, by E. B. White
Mr. Toad, from The Wind in the Willows, by Kenneth Grahame, based on the illustrations by E. H. Shepard
Mr. Tumnus, from The Chronicles of Narnia series, by C. S. Lewis
Pippi and Mr. Nilsson, from the Pippi Longstocking books, by Astrid Lindgren
Willy Wonka, from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl, based on the illustrations by Quentin Blake
Matilda, from Matilda, by Roald Dahl, based on the illustrations by Quentin Blake (with an homage to the Mara Wilson movie)
Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, from Peter Pan, by J. M. Barrie
Merlin and Archimedes, from The Sword in the Stone, by T. H. White, based on the illustrations by Dennis Nolan
Pinocchio, from Pinocchio, by Carlo Collodi, based on the illustrations by Enrico Mazzanti
Alice, White Rabbit, and Cheshire Cat, from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, illustrated by John Tenniel
Rupert Bear, from the Rupert stories, created by Mary Tourtel and continued by Alfred Bestall, John Harrold, Stuart Trotter, and others.

Tin Woodman and Scarecrow, from the Land of Oz series, by L. Frank Baum, based on the illustrations by W. W. Denslow and John R. Neill

Adventures in Librarian-ing
Today I was reading Beatrice Doesn't Want To by Laura Numeroff to the Grade 1s and when I got to the line that Beatrice hated libraries they all unanimously gasped in shock and horror.
One kid was frowning in deep disapproval.

BLOG MOD PSA: Something I want to clear up, because this piece of misinformation is really making the rounds lately.
Chris never posted the "Give a Dog a Donut" story reading to his IG account. BECAUSE IT WAS MADE BEFORE HE EVER HAD AN IG ACCOUNT. It was posted to the official Save with Stories IG account on March 26, 2020. Chris did not open his IG account until May 1, 2020. And, oh look, it's still there!
As far as I know, Chris never later reposted this to his IG account.
Please, let's not create conspiracy theories where there don't need to be conspiracy theories.

BSD character concepts (for legal purposes these are jokes)
Laura Numeroff: If You Give a Mouse a Cookie - Convinces you to do a small favor for her that starts to snowball into a series of increasingly weirder favors
Theodor Geisel: The Cat in the Hat - Forces you to speak in rhyme. Any mistake brings a massive vaguely cat shaped beast wielding a comically oversized mallet closer to you.
Chuck Tingle: Guide to Romance - Mimics your skill in a sexy way (Positive)
EL James: Fifty Shades Darker - Mimics your skill in a sexy way (Negative)
Stephen King: Christine - Just fucking runs you over It’s the Shining: Can read minds; each thought increases or decreases his sanity meter, a complete decrease turns him into a creature that copies people’s worst fears and will not turn back unless bombarded with fearlessness or after killing 27 people.
Suzanne Collins: The Hunger Games - Makes people around her more powerful based on how little money they have. (Definitely a vigilante type, I can imagine she’d constantly be trying to attack Fitzgerald)

1, 4, and 17 for the ask game
Book you've reread the most times?
Loooord that's hard. Uhm, maybe? Maaayyyybe The Girl Who Could Fly by Victoria Forester but honestly that's such a hard question!
4. What sections of a bookstore do you browse?
Young Adult and Sci-Fi/Fantasy, and also the kids section sometimes!! Depends on why I'm in the bookstore!
17. Top 5 children’s books?
OOOH OKAY so this is hard bc like. I'll do two lists one for little kids and one for older kids. For younger kids: The Paper Bag Princess (Robert Munsch), The King's Fountain (Lloyd Alexander), Aladdin (non-disney picture book), Blueberry Girl (Neil Gaiman), the whole "If you give a [animal] a [thing]..." series by Laura Numeroff. For older kids (between like 8-12ish?): the Unwanteds Series, Skullduggery Pleasant, Alex Rider series, Keepers of the Lost Cities series, and Spy School series!
Thank you SO MUCH for the ask this was SO fun
