wow the movies really did exclude every female peer Katniss was close with in the books, didn’t they?
like I talk about Madge a lot and obviously she’s the most important example, but Delly wasn’t there either. neither was Lavinia. that makes me so sad. Johanna was there, but their friendship wasn’t really elaborated on much in the movies, either.
now obviously she had Prim and she bonded with Mags, Wiress, and Rue before they died, as well as becoming closer with her mother, but they’re not her peers. (Hazelle isn’t Katniss’s peer either, but I wish she’d been in the movies, too. their relationship is so special to me.)
Katniss’s friendships/connections with her female peers (and other female characters in general) are so much more… profound than her relationships with male characters, or at least in my opinion. she describes female characters and her relationships with them so differently than she does male characters and her relationships with them. she values all of her relationships with other girls and women so highly. with Madge specifically (and maybe Lavinia, too), her admiration borders on sapphic.
but nooooooo apparently the love triangle was more important.

I'm not having a good day so neither will you, so please remember:
• there might still be people who used Finnick when he was 14 in The Capitol who went unpunished
• Gale's name doesn't make Katniss smile anymore
• Haymitch and Effie didn't actually end up together and he probably never saw her again
• Madge died and will never get her happy ending
• Gale will never go to the woods he used to hunt in
• Haymitch has no family and did not recover from alcoholism
• Johanna was alone when she got back to 7 and probably never got over her hydrophobia and will sink into deep depression and alcoholism and die alone
• Enobaria was also probably tortured like Peeta, Johanna and Annie but nobody ever mentions it just like they don't mention the fact that most/all of her friends and family are dead
• one day Katniss will have to explain to her kids where auntie Prim is
• Katniss and Peeta got a boring ending but were too exhausted to search for a better one
• Beetee had to watch Wiress, his wife, die and most likely will never recover
• Lavinia, the red haired Avox girl, had the most traumatizing life than any other character and yet still died with no one even knowing her name
• Haymitch lost Chaff, his best friend
• Finnick died not knowing Annie was pregnant
• Pollux heard Castor's screams as he was getting ripped apart and Annie heard the cries of other tributes as they were drowning around her
• Tigris saw Lucy Gray in every rainbow

My personal headcanon for Lavinia (Avox Girl) is that the boy who died in the woods w her was her older brother, who was very protective of her, and that maybe they were on the run from the capitol bc she was the one who did something to piss them off and he was the one who risked everything to help her escape, and so he essentially died in the process of trying to protect her. So when she sees Katniss volunteer to die in place of her sister, what choice does she have but to forgive her? Even if she doesn’t want to; even though she doesn’t want to. She can’t help but forgive her.

i know this all started like 11 years ago but i'm still so mad at how the hunger games movies have removed practically every trace of the avoxes that they can. i know that movies can't include everything from the books, but the avoxes are so important to the story and it does a real disservice to the movies by removing them. also, it would have added maybe a couple minutes per movie to include them the way they were in the books.
there are mentions of them here and there, and we do see lavinia briefly, but the only avox who's there in any meaningful way is pollux. and they couldn't take him out of the movie! not only is he important to include with the camera crew, he has to be there because he's the one who leads the group through the tunnels. if it were possible to cut him out of mockingjay, i think they would have.
removing so many scenes with lavinia genuinely detracted from my enjoyment of the first movie. especially witnessing her capture & carrying the guilt about it. when there are avoxes waiting on her, katniss does treat them politely, but i think it would have been so important & impactful to see her truly recognizing lavinia and her humanity and trying to communicate with her like anyone else. fixing this probably wouldn't add more than like 5 minutes to the runtime, but it would be such an improvement.
and don't even get me started with darius being removed from the movies. maybe he shows us a little less about katniss's character than lavinia would, but the mentions of him in catching fire add so much to our imagination of the hob and illustrate just how different peacekeepers were in district 12. this is also the first time this has happened to someone katniss actually knows. i think this would take maybe a minute and a half to fix? at most. really all we would need to see is darius talking to katniss in the hob, then being one of the peacekeepers getting captured when thread takes over.
obviously they kept pollux in because they literally couldn't remove him from mockingjay. i don't really have any complaints about his portrayal in the movies, which is kind of surprising given how passionate i am about him. also, the movie actually portrayed castor's death better than the book! it wasn't really in the book, basically castor was there and then he wasn't. so the movie version has a lot more impact.
also, it sucks that we didn't get to hear what happened to lavinia and darius. i always have intense second-hand embarrassment at the fact that in the book, peeta realizes pollux is an avox then immediately starts trauma dumping about seeing lavinia and darius tortured to death. if it were done as written in the movie, i might have experienced literal physical pain. but at the same time, i think it's very important that katniss finds out what happened to them. also in the books, squad 451 hears all the avoxes in the tunnels screaming as the mutts kill them. i feel like that would have been really easy to add in.
anyways we are moving on before i write an entire dissertation on pollux.
it was even worse in tbosas! the movie cut the scene where snow sees dr. gaul experimenting on and torturing avoxes. it would have been absolutely horrifying to see that translated to the screen, but it's incredibly important to snow's character development and his transformation into someone who both allows and perpetuates that cruelty. also, justice for ma plinth! i think it would have been incredible to see more of her and the way she treats people. in the book, she is so kind and caring to the avoxes working in her house. they're able to communicate with her, and she cooks food that will be easy for them to eat. since treating the avoxes as remotely human is so unusual, treating them with such love and respect is a revolutionary act, and goes to show what kind of person sejanus was raised to be. i know that this would add quite a bit to the runtime, but it probably should have been two movies anyways.
i know that side/background characters are cut from movies all the time. it happens. but even without getting a lot of lines, the avoxes are incredibly important to the story. these are people who have been enslaved, tortured, and dehumanized more than basically anyone else in panem. once characters truly see the avoxes, they're forced to confront the true brutality of the capitol and what they'll do to keep people in line. i think the movies don't truly force audiences to confront the brutality of this punishment. any rebellion is punished by literally robbing people of their voices and cutting them off from everything they've known. even if there's someone left to buy their freedom, they're physically disfigured for life--even removal of part of the tongue can have catastrophic side effects.
also, characters' perceptions of avoxes can say a lot about the kind of person they are. avoxes are the lowest class in panem, and treated with about as much agency as a piece of furniture. people aren't supposed to treat them like people. they're only supposed to talk to avoxes when giving them an order. despite this, there are certain characters who choose to show them kindness and love.
anyways i'm gonna end this here before i write a post so long it crashes tumblr but pls ask me literally anything about pollux i am in love w him <3

"Just like I was watching the Games." -- Katniss, on how she watched Lavinia and her brother. Chapter 6, "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins
Our first impression of Katniss is someone who is selfless, and gives herself up for Prim. But with the appearance of Lavinia, Collins stresses that Katniss is not some saint. She has stood by while other people died, literally in this case. But she has also watched the Hunger Games her entire life. The Capitol wants the citizens of all districts to be okay--relieved even--when others die.
She knows what happened to Lavinia is wrong, which shows her moral compass is not bent in the wrong direction the way many of the Capitol people we meet. But she is an ordinary girl, with very little power, and the system relies on people like her staying quiet for their own safety.
Lavinia's brother, whose name we never know, was probably not much older than Prim, or Rue but it prompted no acts of defiance like when Prim is Reaped or Rue is killed. Perhaps because Katniss was only watching that time.

THG book 1 reread thoughts
THG rereads book 1
The TBOSAS movie inspired me to finally read that book and reread the originals
The start does well at setting the scene, but that might be helped by having first read knowledge to work off of.
"inside the woods is the only person with who I can be myself: Gale" is common Everthorne fodder but in context it comes right after who can be trusted with political rants. A child repeating what they shouldn't is I thought of with Posy but it's mentioned with Katniss and Prim. Tesserae did seem like part of divide and conquer within districts, and Katniss describes Gale saying just that.
There is much more to the story than the love triangle, of course, but I couldn't avoid thinking about Everlark shippers insisting it was set up already. I do see a lot of potential with Peeta and not much romantic about Gale however close they are otherwise. (At first I saw friends-to-lovers potential with Everthorne and figured Everlark happened because of shared experience with the Games)
I'm hardly starving but could still relate to the dumpster diving - the bins had just been emptied is frusting timing. I forgot the details of the all important Peeta giving Katniss bread. It was fresh but burnt, I had mentally assumed it was stale. Deliberately burnt to give away? Even if it's a lost sale rather than just giving away something that would be trashed anyway, she's still being cruel. Also note that Mr. Mellark will only trade for squirrels when she's not around. When Peeta didn't say anything to Katniss, I had assumed he was too much of a dork to talk to girls (I can relate to that too) but I got the clear impression he was scared of his mother.
Haymitch and Effie's appearances were refreshing - highlights there's more to him than a drunken idiot and more to her than being vapid about the show.
I wonder if Haymitch told Peeta about the forcefield around the tribute center because of the one at the edge of Haymitch's arena. Avoiding tributes escaping or being killed (note no fighting each other, with neutral sparring partners available) before the Games felt like a reaction to the haphazard early procedures in TBOSAS.
Katniss worrying about not helping Lavinia feels kinda like Coriolanus and the Sejanus situation from TBOSAS.
I had forgotten the beginning to middle Games because the finale was so dramatic.
I thought of Clove as the District 2 psycho, but Cato isn't the most mentally stable individual either, I had remembered him as more of a straight up meathead/jock. "I kill her in my own way" could be interpreted in a particularly sinister manner. It reminds me of the hero escaping because the villain takes his time, like monologuing to a captive James Bond. Maybe it's doubly personal because of not only his close call with the tracker jackers, but Glimmer's horrific death, a Cato/Glimmer hint perhaps.
I rmembered Rue helped Katniss by pointing out the tracker jacker nest, but I forgot how closely they worked together. Rue talking about 11 being even worse than 12 made me think of all things The Big Bang Theory - Stuart the comic book store owner is even more antisocial than the nerd main characters. Maybe dramatic contrast is part of the point. Katniss thinking that conversation might get censored made me think of how a Peeta interview in Mockingjay was quite interesting for the audience as no Victor had previously spoken publically about their experience in the arena.
Marvel killing Rue with Katniss immediately shooting him was hard to forget but I hadn't remembered he snared her first. The memorial wasn't as extensive as I recalled but perhaps that's because the movie really emphasized it.
Careers carrying minimal food and being vulnerable to disruptions was interesting as both a comment about starvation and Games strategy.
I also hadn't remembered the fire sequence. Perhaps Haymitch was able to save sponsor money for the burn ointment because Katniss is an experienced hunter and gatherer so the money didn't need to go to food.
I remembered Peeta was sick in the cave and the feast included his medicine but forgot just how dire the situation was. Blood poisoning used in the medical sense for infection complications (apparently when bacteria from the infection get into the blood) threw me for a loop because the xenophobic usage was in the news December 2023 (with Trump channeling Hitler about immigrants). "Remember, we're madly in love, so you can kiss me whenever you want" even when he's half dead I saw two ways - that crush is severe, and/or he still has the sense to play up the star crossed lovers act.
I do feel drugging Peeta when he said not to is acceptable because he's clearly not in his right mind, physical illness analogue to involuntary committment for mental illness.
In the cave she dreams about being snug at home, that seems telling.
Katniss thinking about the truth of Peeta's first day of school story is some "real or not real" already, I wonder if SC deliberately planned it that way or later decided to reference the earlier concept. I figured Peeta meant it, maybe played it up, even if Katniss didn't reciprocate.
Her not wanting to sing because it reminded her too much of her dead father is how I think I reacted to baseball for awhile.
The movie emphasized the Rue mutt if I recall correctly; the book highlighted Glimmer and Foxface. I recalled Katniss putting Cato out of his misery with the mutts but forgot that dragged on all night.
I wasn't surprised there was some sort of new victor interview, but I had forgotten about the highlight reel and the platforms and the stage being modified for two.
With a new appreciation for Everlark, the ending was heartbreaking where Peeta is shocked at it being at least partially an act/strategy on Katniss' part, highlighting how real it was for him at least. The book ending before the homecoming was an interesting dramatic choice.

One thing that really worked for me w The Hunger Games trilogy was the attention to detail given toward developing even the most decentralized of background characters and how it doesn’t detract or distract from the story as a whole but enhances it, by driving home the theme of every life being precious and worth protecting and every human person being just that, fully, indomitably human. Esp the female characters!! When does that happen with female characters? Every character could in theory get their own book no dice, and that’s that’s how I want to write

Friend….what Darius subplot in THG? Omg I’m having literal amnesia
darius was a peacekeeper in twelve. probably in his early twenties and a capitol citizen. katniss and gale were on friendly terms with him and he seems to be quite accepted among the district 12 people considering he’s often seen at the hob. he is removed from his post after intervening in gale’s whipping and subsequently shipped to the capitol where he’s enslaved as an avox. later in cf when katniss and peeta return to the capitol for the quarter quell darius is one of their assigned slaves which is obviously orchestrated by snow to rattle katniss. in mj we learn that darius was in prison with peeta. peeta was forced to watch him being tortured to death. this subplot (especially in combination with lavinia’s story (the avox girl)) really underlines that a violent oppressive system will lash out against anyone who threatens or endangers its perpetuation/survival. much like the districts, capitol citizens aren’t safe from or free under the system. if you throw in the aspects of dehumanization that go both ways it’s getting really 🫠🫠 which is why i don’t understand why they cut it from the movies

genuinely my favorite thing about thg is how little we know about other characters and their motivation. why the fuck is plutarch a rebel? what’s the deal with the mayor of d12? what was up with effie the entirety of mockingjay, how does she feel about everything? what was lavinia’s deal? we’ll never know because katniss doesn’t because the details of other peoples lives aren’t massively important to her at that moment in time!
what i’m saying is it’s free real estate make them up on ur thg blogs that u should make

the thg series is filled with interesting characters who have captured our imaginations. do you have any headcanons about a character from the series who was not given a last name? (ex: cato, thom, portia, etc). could be from any of the four books. 😀
This a very interesting question Anon! Thank you!
I’ve always been intrigued about Lavinia and her nameless companion, from the first book.
🚨Spoiler 🚨
Katniss recognizes an Avox (a person from the Capitol who’s tongue has been cut and forced into slavery, usually as punishment for treason), as a girl she once saw in the woods with a boy. They appeared to be running away but got caught by Capitol hovercrafts, killing the boy in the process. She and the girl locked eyes right before she got captured.
Effie can’t fathom how Katniss would know an avox, since apparently they’re the lowest of the low, and Peeta saves the day, saying that the Avox reminds Katniss of Delly Cartwright, a classmate of theirs who Katniss says looks nothing like the Avox, but accepts the lie because she realizes how dangerous the whole topic is and that Peeta just did her a solid.
In the second book, we see the same Avox girl, only now the Avox boy is Peacekeeper Darius, who Katniss, Peeta and even Haymitch know got placed there as a threat to Katniss.
In the third book we learn from a crazed Peeta, that the Avox girl’s name was Lavinia, and that she was electrocuted to death as a means to torture Peeta. Darius is also dead by then.
🚨End Spoiler 🚨
At first I wondered where Lavinia and her companion were going when they came across Katniss and Gale?
When we learn that D13 is secretly alive, and they’re still rebels, it just made sense that Lavinia and her friend were running to D13.
Katniss says the two of them looked like they were from the Capitol, which is probably why Lavinia was t killed. Her companion was pierced by the hovercraft’s claw presumably on accident, so he was probably meant to also be an Avox.
I’ve also wondered about the nature of Lavinia and the boy’s relationship. I wonder if they were a couple, or if it would make more sense if they were related, like siblings. I wonder what horrors they saw to prompt them to run away from the Capitol. Who were they related to that they were hunted down all the way to D12? How did they make it so far unscathed? Since we met Bonny and Twill who had escaped D8 with uniforms and weapons, and were both banged up pretty badly when Katniss found them… I just find it hard to believe Capitol teens would have traveled so much farther than the women from 8, and found no traps along the way.
So many things to think about, and sadly, not enough to go on about.
Again, thanks for the question, Anon. I enjoyed sharing my thoughts.
