District 11 sending Katniss bread after she honored Rue is 1000% more impactful than watching some grain get pushed over.

For one, the entire nation saw it which increased its impact. For another, it showed solidarity among the districts. Thresh was still alive, but the people who had two mites pooled their resources together to give food to a tribute to another district, who was still a competitor against their own. But those barriers broke down and a kindness inspired another kindness, united two districts and showed the rest the way Panem could be.

felt the spirit of the hunger games take hold of me and drew a bunch of characters from the first book the way I imagined them! might post finnick and the catching fire gang later

Katniss repeatedly connects Rue to Prim in her mind, but I'd argue that Rue also reminds her of Gale, whether she realizes it or not. Rue and Gale are both eldest children who help to care for several younger siblings, to the extent of helping to feed the family and habitually giving their own food away to others. They both bond with Katniss through the exchanging of food/resources/knowledge. They both recognize, point out, and are willing and eager to take steps to rectify inequalities. It is Rue's death that leads Katniss to fully feel -- and for the first time publicly act on -- the anger Gale had expressed to her.

the pipeline between "i'm in the trees, i'm in the breeze, my footsteps on the ground, i'm here i'm there i'm everywhere but you can't catch me now" and rue's proclamation that "if they can't catch me, they can't kill me" has me shivering actually. it probably had snow shivering too as he watched and considered another scrappy girl from a poor outlying district who disappeared with the trees and according to the legend she was named after, floated amongst them

right ok so now that I’ve plunged headfirst back into my hunger games obsession I need to read the takes on the books ending with Katniss having children. I know y’all have feelings. I know there’s deep metaphors and symbolisms. Give me them.

wow the movies really did exclude every female peer Katniss was close with in the books, didn’t they?

like I talk about Madge a lot and obviously she’s the most important example, but Delly wasn’t there either. neither was Lavinia. that makes me so sad. Johanna was there, but their friendship wasn’t really elaborated on much in the movies, either.

now obviously she had Prim and she bonded with Mags, Wiress, and Rue before they died, as well as becoming closer with her mother, but they’re not her peers. (Hazelle isn’t Katniss’s peer either, but I wish she’d been in the movies, too. their relationship is so special to me.)

Katniss’s friendships/connections with her female peers (and other female characters in general) are so much more… profound than her relationships with male characters, or at least in my opinion. she describes female characters and her relationships with them so differently than she does male characters and her relationships with them. she values all of her relationships with other girls and women so highly. with Madge specifically (and maybe Lavinia, too), her admiration borders on sapphic.
