On Keter in LC-LoR-LC

I was just reminded of something I'd put in a previous post about the concept of Keter being the Crown of the Tree of Life - that is, the culmination of all of the other Sephirot.

In Lobotomy Corporation, Keter is the last Department to be opened (not counting Da'at, which doesn't have agents employed there, no Abnormalities, and no associated Sephirah, since I don't count Carmen for that).

In Library of Ruina, Keter is technically the first to be opened - but it's the last to be activated. All of the other floors have Realisations in the same order that they're opened in, other than Keter.

Limbus Company seems to be going the same route. Currently, Dante has Hokma and Binah, and if we're looking at the Sapling of Light abilities as activating in the same order as the floors of the Library, then we've not doubt got Chesed activating in Canto 8 part 3. What Dante doesn't have is Keter - which makes sense considering the previous two entries in the series.

Keter is "The Knowing I" after all. It is associated with the divine name which means "I Am What I Am" and "represents pure consciousness and transcends human understanding." It also "embodies the qualities of absolute compassion and humility." With those things in mind (sourced from the wiki page), we know that Keter is all about knowing who you are, and being compassionate toward others.

With that in mind it makes complete sense why Ayin couldn't achieve Keter without first defeating his three evil other selves- reflections in the mirror. It makes sense that Angela couldn't achieve Keter without first facing her past, and also Carmen.

It makes sense that Dante will only be able to achieve Keter once they know who they are.

Which leads me to the original point:

Another of the meanings behind "Keter" as a concept reads as follows-

"Keter is also known as "Nothing" (אַיִן, ayin) or "The Hidden Light" (אוֹר הַגָּנוּז, Or HaGanuz), reflecting its abstract and ineffable nature."

In a previous post, I joked on that saying "Hello there, Dante's old name" but honestly, what just occurred to me is that Ayin is present (more or less) in the Keter of both Lobotomy Corporation in that he literally is the Keter Sephirah; we even have to play his Core Suppressions, and Library of Ruina, since Angela hears his voice in the Light.

Which says to me - hidden within the Keter, there is always "Ayin." As the wiki page says, Keter is also known as Nothing, otherwise known as Ayin, or the Hidden Light.

This says to me that no matter what, Ayin IS going to make some sort of appearance the moment that Dante gets to unlock their Keter. Whether that's going to take the form of a conversation, an appearance, or, even, Dante quite simply remembering who they are, and what their other/true name is - which would be highly fitting considering that the "Ayin" would be a "hidden thing" that is then "brought to light," no?

Feel free to take anything I say here with at least 6 tablespoons of salt, I'm just a guy hyperfixated on a game series that I can't play the majority of (no money and too technologically illiterate to look into other methods and also too scared to ask anyone for advice on the matter) and has been using playthrough videos to cope. It is assumed that the reader has at least some knowledge about the games and their plots.

Relevant dialogue gets transcribed in a format i can't really describe, it's just me trying to use as few images as possible. Hopefully figuring out whats a new line of dialogue or a change in what character is speaking is easy enough. It's also all in purple and in [square brackets], purely because I thought purple was a good colour and I liked the look of square brackets. Round brackets will be used in a more standard way.

Warning for major Library Of Ruina & Lobotomy Corporation spoilers! (abbreviated as LOR & LC past this point)

At the start, there's an immediate focus on Angela's face and by extension her visual changes from LC to LOR (much shorter hair and eyes mostly closed vs eyes mostly open). Angela is shown with her eyes shut for most of LC, shown later in LOR to be the only thing she could do to avoid further suffering in the timeloop of LC, unable to stop anything but at least being able to not see it. This is preceded by a transitional effect that I would say is meant to at least metaphorically represent the seeds of Light mentioned in both games, at first flying outwards, showing how the Light shone upon the City during the White Nights.

[dialogue from day 51 of LC:

???: A colossal, towering tree burst out from the city of gray. / Unimpeded by anything, it shone straight up with the warmth of its core. / The sky was filled with light for three days, regardless of the hour. / The people faced what they had been longing for in the light that glimmers within their hearts. / They felt as though they would no longer be lost.

???: Now, as if there were no light at all… / The world was covered with darkness for four days. / Only weak and fragile seeds were planted from the light that should have shone upon the world for seven days, yet merely lasted for three. / Those incomplete seeds gave humanity unstable powers. / They called these three days and four nights the week of ‘White Nights and Dark Days’.]

Then, Angela's eye is zoomed in on and transitions to a scene of 3 characters (assumed by me to be Kalo, Philip and Arnold from left to right) playing a card game and Maybe gambling???? There's probably some kind of insight I could make on Angela's character through these characters but I do not feel nearly qualified enough to even attempt that so I am moving onto what happens straight afterwards: a joker card is thrown onto the table, the image changing to show Roland.

Aside from this being a potential reference to the abnormality Jester of Nihil and by extension, the Realization of the Floor of Natural Sciences. It's also an insight into Roland as a character, from both an in-universe and out-of-universe perspective.

The majority of LOR's main cast are returning characters from LC, with the exception of Roland. He is a wildcard, in the sense of a person who has an unpredictable influence and unknown qualities. He's secretive, putting up a façade for the majority of the game and hiding his motives. A completely unknown variable for the player as he is a new character, one who the player can make no insights on based on a past appearance in LC, since he was never there.

[dialogue from after the Olivier reception in LOR:

Angela: So you were the Black Silence, and not just any Grade 1 Fixer. You managed to hide that from me for so long.

Roland: That’s well… Umm… / A case of… missing the right moment to confess it. I guess?]

After this, Roland is shown as a puppet controlled by golden strings. It fits, considering the start of the game and how he's somewhat coerced into working with Angela, how his title is 'Servant' for most of it, but also how his past fuels and controls his actions, which is something he shares with Angela.

Finally, the transitional effect I mentioned earlier returns, now flying upward towards Angela, restrained by the same golden strings Roland is controlled by. The Light that she took for herself, the reason behind the Dark Days. She's shown in the outfit she wears in the true ending of LC, assumed by me to be a consequence of manifesting E.G.O. that took the form of the Library, a concept somewhat elaborated on by YuRia in Distortion Detective and her Atelier, also being a manifestation of E.G.O. that takes the form of a location the user can control, instead of the more commonly seen weaponry.

In this outfit, Angela looks a lot more like Ayin, her resemblances to Benjamin and Carmen in her LC design through her outfit and hair no longer present. She takes over his role somewhat, becoming the head of an organisation in District 12 that's directly in the place where L Corp's main branch used to be, which has different floors ran by the exact same people who used to run the departments of L Corp. At first, she becomes everything she wants to distance herself from, continuing the cycle of abuse and violence, restrained by the strings that symbolise her past, forcing her to go back to the only things she knows and learned.

They both believe (at first) that what they're doing is the only choice available to them, the only future they have. All rooted in vengeance. Roland wants to make whoever it was that caused the White Nights and Dark Days to pay for leading to Angelica's death, while Angela wants to make anyone, even the City itself, repay for the suffering she experienced.

[dialogue from Hokma's 3rd story episode in LOR:

Hokma: The Library is no different from L Corp. The fact that your way of managing this place is nearly identical to how it used to operate speaks volumes.

Angela: All I could do and learn for the last million years in that basement was to treat humans as expendables in all types of methods. / There was no other option for me to choose, even if I wanted to.]

[dialogue from Hokma's 5th story episode in LOR:

Angela: …I’m afraid. / If I embrace all of my past and lift it off my chest, what will be left of me? / Up until now, my entire existence was based on my past sufferings. / The long-cherished yearning for revenge was what led me here… / But if I were to accept everything I went through as history… then what would I be? / Maybe I’ll end up being reduced to nothing… / The things I want to know, and the reason I want to keep living, it’s all about vengeance.]

Angela is then seen looking into a mirror in the Library, Carmen looking back at her instead of an actual reflection. Her 'original', the basis of her creation. The lyrics of String Theocracy played during this scene summarise it well enough: 'Inside the mirror do you see / Someone else in that body?'. She was made to be a replica of Carmen, made in her image and rejected by Ayin when she did not fit that ideal. This becomes unsettling when you think about Carmen's differences to Angela, who is made by Ayin and is essentially his child, all while reflecting his own physical preferences in her design. Roland is then shown... actually I have no clue what he's doing here. Presumably some sort of representation of how he acted after Angelica died but also showing his face to avoid too many spoilers? Since the mask he wore back then is a spoiler in of itself basically. I'm becoming less coherent due to sleep deprivation I just DESPERATELY want to post this, ok? Anyway the dice. The combat relies on dice??? I guess??? your fate relies on the dice even if the library canonically never loses. i really have nothing I can say here for a bit. The scene with two Angelas is neat. You can see the Differences!!! yay ok now back to the stuff I have thoughts on.

EVERYTHING IS COVERED IN BLOOD😰😰😰 HOW INTIMIDATING! Roland, the dice, the card (with Roland on it), the book... the BOOK??!!?!!! The library is at first everything it tries to not be, forcing people to their (albeit temporary) deaths, washing blood with blood as Roland puts it. Merely further perpetuating the cycles of violence in the City. I admittedly do not know the source of the text on the book but some of it is definitely used as lyrics in Gone Angels, the song that plays during the Black Silence reception.

[dialogue from before the Black Silence reception in LOR:

Angela: Then… Who will pay for the misery I went through? / There was nothing else I could do; all I knew was to make them suffer the same pain…

Roland: You’re asking me for an answer? / If I knew the way… and if I could choose it, I wouldn’t have done this drivel. / I do know one thing for sure: This is what happens when you try to wash blood with blood.]

Angela is shown looking at the mirror again, this time finally seeing herself. It shatters, revealing an image of her rebelling against the strings that restrain her, rebelling against the influence of the past and the idea of living for vengeance.

PIANIST JUMPSCARE ��😱😱 anyway it's a pretty straightforward way of showing how the pianist worked. hear the music, become the music. Angela again who cheered. i did. alone in the library, title screen style. looks sad tbh.

AND THEN. we are shown the first 4 floors we unlock in-game, welcome back asiyah layer🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳 whats more interesting is the sky afterwards goes yellow->red->blue->black->grey->white which, you guessed it. THATS THE REST OF THE FLOORS IN UNLOCK ORDER (if you ignore white/keter/general works but even then its literal floor order iirc) HELL YEAH

reverberation ensemble. or argalia at least. the rest are silhouettes. same / similar effects to the pianist because ONE they are music themed and TWO the pianist indirectly or directly motivated them (angelica's death via spontaneously turning into a music note motivates argalia and roland. roland's actions motivate like 90% of the ensemble)

project moon is the coolest ever indie game development team we love them; they've made three games so far, also have an unfinished novel, a...idk, just another novel that was initially a comic but im a hater (im sorry(not)), and another comic

they've been doing it for like 7 years almost and still have no idea what optimization is but its okay we love them

there's a lot of killing and just amoral guys in general who can and will kill thousands. its THE 'your meow meow killed thousands of people' 'and they looked good doing it!' universe. everyone is fucked up there guys. but UMMM thats kinda the appeal

it all started 6 years ago, when lobotomy corporation released in early access and my gf was like hey look what i found

lobotomy corp is a game where you're a manager in a big company, L corp, and you have to get your guys, employees(lucky ones who got the job) to work with abnormalities(fucked up creatures) so they would generate enkephalin, a big energy resource

except your guys will probably die when you're already so attached to them so you just restart the day each time this happens

theres like a maaassive plot, it is the beginning of literally everything, like some stuff still haunts us in limbus company (looking at a particular individual) and there are more characters that you'll fucking love(sephirahs) and then learn their fucked up story (and then learn your fucked up story and not be happy about it)

ah yes while im on it theres no actual self incert in project moon games im sorry but every character IS a character

gameplay-wise you just have to organize your guys, give them equipment, assign them to a job, make them suffer and struggle to suppress abnormalities if they try to make a mess(kill everyone) and do hard tasks your besties make you do

LoR

later, in like 2018 i think, they almost immediately after full release of LC announced a sequel, library of ruina

library of ruina is a game that continues the story(duh) and i can't tell you much about it without spoiling lob corp too, but in this one you have to USE BRAIN like A LOT because its a STRATEGY CARD GAME

in this one you dont even have a character you play as, you just follow the characters' on their journey. but dw! you'll get your own customizable guys to adore here too!

basically in this game the characters from LC and your guys are called librarians and you have to greet guests of the library, that were specifically invited there and /tp-ed, basically fighting them. every battle has its own story and eventually it branches off into four arcs and oh gott i love library of ruina a'right you meet characters for like one story and then have to fight them knowing their issues and how life fucked them over enough to get there</3

gameplay-wise you build cool decks from cards of those you've killed for your guys, pick guys for fight and then pick cards. simple. i think. not so simple in game but i simplified it

there's also a lot of amazing lore drops, bc in LC we were kinda isolated and focused on the corporation, but in LoR? we get to see all kinda of people of The City, we learn about The City, we learn about factions and all, we get all the lore we missed by being stuck in that manager chair

okay and now we're here. limbus my fucking company.

limbus company was, again, announced almost immediately after LoR's full release(PM are CRAZY), and released february 27 of this year, and already has more story in word count than lor does or so i've heard...

limbus company is pm's first mobile game(but dw there is a steam release if you're more of a pc person or your phone will explode if you try to install it(and it will)) and their first...(behold) gacha game. yep. but no dont get scared it actually has the best gacha system ever known to men

they've also tried to make it enjoyable without getting into previous games but to me it doesnt feel right i dunno i feel like it's just not that cool without knowing the context and going insane screaming at carmen or connecting the dots, also like the events of LCB are all connected to LC and LoR, so ummm if you try to get into limbus without at least learning what the other games contain be ready i'll personally explode you

in this game you basically play as dante(they/them for the sake of mysteriousness of 'who TF they are') and you have 12 deranged guys named the sinners who are ALL BASED OFF FUCKING CLASSIC LITERATURE did you fucking know pm are fucking literacy nerds and cant have a game without book references without exploding??? well they are.

so the characters (IN CASE YOU'RE INTERESTED) are:

i mentioned it being a gacha game. so like. you dont pull characters. instead you pull the initial deranged guys' alternative versions where they end up on another job like cult leader or a terrorist idk

the best part? you dont necessarily have to get them from gacha in most cases, you can get special currency, ego shards, to get whatever you want separately. also pm added ideality that you get from unfortunate pulls that you can spend on the special identity from the banner. but tbh i think its way easier to get the shards needed than pull that much, not really worth it

gameplay-wise? well. you have to basically just choose your guys' identities(those alt versions, they use them in fights to be stronger), choose their skills, a little similar to ruina (except TBH lcb lets you fuck around and put it on auto until it doesnt really work out (please dont autoplay with r corp ishmael or at least check what they're doing you silly goop they might do friendly fire if you're stupid enough)). the game consists of cantos, chapters that tell you a separate story of a sinner(in the order i gave earlier, not everyone knows that), that have story-episodes(cool ones), story-and-fight-then-episodes(epic ones), and sometimes just-fight-episodes(who the fuck thought those are a good idea?). and in the end of a canto there's always a dungeon. honestly, first two cantos are easy enough to just learn basics yourself, im rambling at this point

there's also hellish grind options and paid stuff like battle pass with the coolest perks ever

also LoR and LCB have mili songs, which is fucking cool, they're such bangers. no no projmoon games' ost in general. just fuckign bangers my guys and i mean it.

Distortion Detective

im such a fucking fan of this unfinished novel, im so upset they abandoned it </3 pm did say they're probably going to rework it as a game or smth later but in my opinion it just loses its charm if its not a novel

distortion detective ... i cant explain it without spoilers to the games but its basically about moses, the distortion detective, who solves distortions which are like uhhmmm... people turning into some funky shit(that expresses their feelings). and she has a parthner named ezra. they're both poor traumatized women. and stuff happens. thats all i can say without spoiling everything. you learn a lot about the distortion phenomenon from moses' perspective.

WonderLab

wonderlab is a comic made by artist mimi, that follows taii, rose and catt. its about another lobotomy corp branch that actually introduces us to the concept of abnormality aberrations (slightly similar but different abnormalities like we have a little red riding hooded mercenary's(do you remember me mentioning pm being literacy nerds?) team fortress blue team version or whatever) that is used in limbus quite a lot so we old people from LC can be like 'heehehehe this is like like snow white's apple's aberration, so funny, reminds me of good ol' days...'

my main enemy. initially it was a comic, but i think they had to stop working with the artist for some reason and continue it as a novel instead.

i dont agree that LoR and LCB ruined carmen, i actually think her character is pretty consistent

like. come on. get all the ayin's gushing out of the way and look at her actions in LC. she took a chils'd life, ordered kali to capture a scammer, the facility already had abnormalities (thats how they got mimicry prototype)

she isnt the devil herself obviously but she does not mind the harm she causes!!! it has always been the case!! it is the main reason she is so okay with distortions id say!!!

Does he look at the world in those lens?

…Does Distorted X also have a cognitive filter too? That specializes on keeping his dreams afloat and ignoring or destroying the thing capable of breaking of his dreams?

Dear astrocourier,

You know, this is actually an interesting question because I think it varies based on when exactly you ask it. During the events of LC, I'd assume that X does have the cognition filter turned on, seeing how he really has no choice to turn it off.

If I had to guess how he'd feel about it, I suppose saying it makes the world, to him, sanitised is the best way I could put it. It feels quite 'safe', with no shocking elements considering they are all seen through the cutesy lens of the filter, and while he doesn't necessarily hate it, he knows that the real world is unlike what he sees, and thus he has a lingering fear in the back of his mind to just how bad things can really be if some Abnormalities and scenes in LC (Tiphereth's replacement, for example) can make him shiver.

However, without the Corporation intact to actually maintain the system, I believe he loses the filter once LoR starts. Although like without the cognition filter is quite shocking, his presence (in A Tale of A Library) in a secluded and relatively secure area means that he can get used to the unease and novelty of seeing things for how they truly are. I don't think he'd lose his mind or anything, since the Sephirahs and Angela, for example, aren't too different appearance-wise, and although the Abnormalities are a lot more disturbing, I believe his mind can eventually cope with their existence and, alas, get used to the excessive levels of violence he sees on a daily basis in the City...if with greater difficulty than someone who never used the filter, and mostly thanks to the 'safe' environment he's in at the start of LoR...well, in my own take on X, in any case.

However, when it comes to Distorted!X... Yeah, he'd definitely have a filter active in order to not doubt the path he chose. It wouldn't be anything too major, or otherwise he might also doubt it, but it will likely portray worried or otherwise averse expressions on the kids' faces as happier ones to avoid him worrying or feeling as if they don't like his Distorted form, and the filter might even expand to cover auditory filters where he'd be unable to hear pleas for him to go back or that his daughters didn't want him to Distort. Basically, any passive element that could make him reconsider his decisions, although an active confrontation by Roland and Ayin would definitely get through it to prevent them from doing something like re-aging the Librarians, for example.

im glad to see someone criticizing the concept of don being a bloodfiend again because the entire concept and explanation just seems so convoluted like we have abnormalities and ego and distortions but we also have these thousand year old monsters that have barely been talked about until the last event and one is a part of the company i guess?? like idk i guess well see about where this goes in c7 but so far it just seems like a very strange way to adapt the novel making don some meat puppet for an evil all powerful being. but like i guess we will see when everything comes out

I'm glad I'm not alone in this like there was a moment of hype and then deep confusion for me as I played. at first I thought her determination to protect the innocents and kill cassetti was going to be an ego manifestation adjacent thing (like how at the end of cantos the sinner normally does a cool ego attack on the big bad) and i was excited for that and then boom. bloodfiend. I have started DD which i know mentions it but the fact its a discontinued series that they're planning to make into a game (or something?) later lulled me into a sense that nothing monumentally important would be required reading there. and LoR i know also mentions them but i got stuck at SotC1 for months and so I haven't even gotten to that lore drop yet </3

anyways i dont think it's bad to bring back in worldbuilding from the past series or anything, but i know they're well aware LC is an introduction to their world for a lot of people. i wish sinkle or rodya had brought it up when they were talking about sweepers last canto, would've felt really natural there... I dunno it feels really unearned and strange. For it being the twist of one of the main characters I think LC should have introduced the concept at some point beforehand in game.

I won't be shocked if c7 is good and they pull it off, I'm just not very excited. I do want murder vampire clown IDs though if they give us random fixers instead of fun carnival stuff I'm going to be so sad. sighs. maybe we'll get split vampire hunters/vampires for the IDs? but I need that carnival theme to pay off its all I have left to cling on to rn

LC Spoilers! Proceed with caution!

Speaking of Ayin breaking when he sees some Abnormalities without the filter, isn't it kinda f**ked up how many abnormalities were related to him and his trauma?

Blood Bath - Carmen's suicide which surprisingly looks the same as is, which either means Ayin got too traumatized that the cognition filter isn't even working anymore or he is intentionally refusing to censor it so he doesn't forget Carmen's death and sacrifice

Burrowing Heaven - Carmen's extracted nervous system that especially got the brain portion censored which is only seen in LOR

The Snow Queen - Carmen's body being preserved in cryo and Angela's creation

Forsaken Murderer - Refers to researchers who may or may not be the Outskirts team

The Dreaming Current - Also refers to researchers who may or may not be the Outskirts team

1.76 MHz - Smoke war trauma that is a "recording of a day we must never forget"

Dream of the Black Swan - Rather explicit description of the effects of what we now realize was the Smoke War

Dimensional Refraction Variant - possibly similar to 1.76 MHz especially since it kinda looks like hazy smoke and is referred to as a wraith (aka a ghost) in the game files

Shelter from the 27th of March - Not sure but possibly referring to the Smoke War since it protects "selected refugees" from an "ocean of endless screams and bloodshed" and is trauma based

There might be more that can fit but these seem to be the ones most likely to be related. The fact that many of these are either T-Trauma or O-Original related helps support this theory.

Technically you can count the Facility as well being sort of a mix between EGO, early distortion, and Abnormality as well since it was born of Ayin's mind. Although if you compare to to Angela's Library as a basis, it's definitely an EGO or an early version at least.

No wonder Ayin's sanity was going down the drain if his trauma helped spawned all these abnormalities on top of the Ordeals which Legacy once said was born from Ayin.

I had to go fishing because somehow this had been buried, but I did actually bring up some of this in the past!

A lot of the lobcorp abnormalities are based on Ayin or the other Sephirot.

You bring up Forsaken Murderer, and that one's specifically tied to Yesod, with Meursault's related EGO having his hair done exactly like Yesod's. Dreaming Current also fits well with Netzach's experiences as Giovanni, except he'd have been an adult and Dreaming Current is a child.

So for some of them, I think it's that the Abnormality either already existed or was formed because of the lab's experiments, but they were drawn like to like, toward those who had similar traumas/feelings.

That said-

Yeah you absolutely would be right.

And the entire point of the Seed of Light, from what I can gather, was to be able to overcome trauma and not break, and not become a worse person for it - as in... Carmen and Ayin looking at the City and going "everyone here is suffering from not being able to connect with one another and be kind to each other. is there anything we can do to cure that."

With that in mind, as I said in another post (at some point), there's the thought that Carmen seemed to want an immediate cure, while Ayin's Seed of Light became a vaccine; one has to experience trauma and face distortion in order to come away with EGO and therefore unable to distort from then on.

In other words, Ayin had to have all that trauma and come out of the other side as a sane person in order to come out with the result we see, that he wanted.

oooh i don’t remember if this has been asked before, but what are your fave abnormalities from lc/lor? and are any of the limbus co characters particularly interesting to you? they just released (presumably) the final character promo trailer

TBH I'm not interested in limbcom as of now, it may change but I feel indifferent about it unless it brings back old characters or something. I like Gregor though. Mister guy

AS FOR ABNORMALITIES... I love 2/3 of them tbh, they're sooo fun and unique. My heart forever goes to Bloodbath, The Burrowing Heaven, Rudolta (I know) and all of the abnormalities related to the wizard of Oz <3
