LIGHTS CAMERA DRARRY FIC CLAIM!

Something Fucking Sinister

Harry Potter meets Jennifer's Body. 9,581 words. Mature. Minor Horror Elements. Creepy Vibes. 8th Year.

Summary: Something is seriously off at The Three Broomsticks. Harry knows it. The walls know it. The washed-up band playing definitely knows it. But his roommate-kinda-frenemy Malfoy? Well. Malfoy is too busy flirting with danger and looking like trouble in human form to care. This was not the stress-free eighth year Harry’d been looking forward to.

“Bristol is that way.” Potter points, then returns his hand to steady the pistol. “You can make it by nightfall.” A grimace flickers across Potter’s face. “Tomorrow, anyway.” “I’m rather hungry,” Draco admits. The faint, gnawing sensation is the least of it, really. His chest hurts and there’s emotion balled up in his throat. Draco’s entire being is teetering on the edge of a phenomenal collapse. Potter glances in that wary arc again, and his eyes return to Draco’s. Harry Potter owes Draco nothing. He’s well aware of that. But being in Potter’s presence is tearing his resolve to shreds. Potter looks clean. He looks beautiful and decently fed and in control of himself, and Draco wants nothing more, nothing, nothing, than to throw himself on Potter’s mercy before his crumbling mind does it for him. “I haven’t eaten in two days,” he continues. A smile he can’t control splits his dry bottom lip, and a huffed giggle sneaks past his lips. “Doesn’t sound very long when I say it out loud, does it? Draco Malfoy. At uni it seemed everybody loved to say his name. Ron did it with a roll of his eyes and later with half-heartedly disdain, like he had to scrape the bottom of a yoghurt cup with a very dull spoon to get the last bits but wasn’t really bothered. Hermione sounded almost breathless, especially when she and Malfoy were having half of their classes together. To tell you the truth, seeing their heads bowed over a shared book in the library made everybody furrow their brows and say what, them? really? But Hermione and Draco made sense just like mixing spicy cheetos with chocolate right after; awful on paper but a really good fucking combo in practice. I’m getting ahead of myself again. Are you comfortable? Is this position good for your old back? I need to tell this story from the beginning so you can understand the situation fully. I know you love to have everything under control, under your thumb, but fortune always favours those who’re patient. And you don’t have anything better to do, do you?  I hope you’ll forgive my ramblings. What I feel towards Draco seeps through my pores into every fibre of my being and sometimes I simply can’t stop it.

I'm so happy to finally be able to share this podfic I made for the Lights, Camera, Drarry fest. The fic was written for the 2022 fest, and is inspired by The Queen's Gambit. Do I know anything about chess? Not really. Did it make any difference to my enjoyment of this beautiful fic? It did not. Read or listen, whichever you prefer.

Also, I'm gonna use this post as a bit of a documentation as well lol. I use tumblr as a sort of art archive so I thought I'd put some of the ideas and sketches that I dropped/couldn't finish. It's not much, but I wanted to save it here.

“Do what you like. I don’t care,” Draco says, looking away as he tugs off the outer robes that are acting as his suitcase. Underneath, he’s wearing black trousers and a peacock blue shirt. It doesn’t suit his colouring as well as it did Peregrine’s. He sits down heavily on a faded sofa.

“I think you do care.” Harry takes a seat at the far end of the sofa and stretches his legs out towards the fire. “You were making a De-Ageing Potion for me. I saw it in your memories.”

Draco pretends to scowl. “I was going to slip it into your tea some morning, to ruin whatever charade you were playing in order to infiltrate my house.”

“I don’t believe you really thought that. You knew I was cursed.”

“Not until you had your run-in with Elspeth in Knockturn, I didn’t. Before that, I actually thought about confronting you about whatever you were up to.”

Harry barks a laugh. “I don’t believe that, either. You would have rather taken your chances than deal with me head on. Yes, I understand you well enough now to know that. Come to think of it, I’m surprised you stuck around after you left the Unspeakables. Wouldn’t it have been less trouble to go abroad? First you went to great lengths to create a floating house and a fake identity, and then you didn’t even try to stay out of sight. The famous Wizard Peregrine and his miraculous potions!”

“Laugh all you like. I needed to stay in Britain.” Draco lifts his chin and slips back into his usual, confident tone. “And while I was here, why not try to achieve greatness and renown as a brilliant potioneer, albeit under a different name?”

“It still seems like an unnecessary risk with the Unspeakables and Elspeth Craven after you. Why did you need to stay in Britain?”

Draco shifts uncomfortably at his end of the sofa. “This may sound far-fetched, but I don’t see why I shouldn’t tell you, since everything has already come to pass. There was Prophecy made about me.”

“Really? An actual Prophecy?”

“Yes, an actual Prophecy. It doesn’t only happen to very special Chosen Ones, you know. About two years after I took the Vow, a colleague in the Hall of Prophecies offered to let me hear it. I’m sure he wasn’t supposed to, but it must be unbearably tempting when you know the subject personally. Anyway, it was about someone freeing me from the Vow.”

“Me?” Harry asks, taken aback.

“Not in so many words. Prophecies are all maddeningly vague, as you know. But it did say the one who’d free me would come bearing years unlived, or some such drivel. And that he’d be carried to me across native waves—Britain, in other words.”

“Oh! The pixie carried me to the house. That’s why you didn’t kick me out the day I arrived!”

“Indeed,” Draco confirms, then adds drily, “Little did I know how much trouble you’d bring with you.”

“But it was worth it in the end, wasn’t it?”

“Hmm. You filled my bedroom with spiders. I nearly died in a tangle of my own hair. I endured more green vegetables than any one man should. And now my floating house is damaged and my potions business in ruins.”

“Oh, come on! It wasn’t all bad. You’re free now, and…” Harry leans over and picks up Draco’s long plait. “You like this.”

“I know you like it.” Draco gives Harry a knowing look that makes his cheeks burn.

“Maybe,” Harry concedes. He edges a few inches closer. “The strangest part is… I’ve decided that it isn’t the only thing I like about you.”

Draco’s eyes widen. “Oh. What… What else do you like?”

“You rescued Timpsy—and Beryloth, although that was because you needed its magic,” Harry murmurs as he wraps the plait around his hand. It’s just as silky as he imagined. “You chose to stop a group of Voldemort supporters by yourself. You are very clever, and you like helping people.”

“I’m hardly a philanthropist,” Draco demurs, his voice gone a bit husky. “It just so happens that it fits in with my ambitions.”

Harry holds up his hand wearing the Portkey ring. “Was giving me this in line with your ambitions?”

“I wasn’t about to give Elspeth the satisfaction of getting ahold of you.”

“Of course not,” Harry says solemnly. “I assume the other gifts you gave me were for similar reasons, then.”

“Shut up, Potter. You’re a terrible giftee. No manners at all.” Draco looks Harry up and down with appreciative eyes. “That jumper does look good on you, though. And this is rather fetching.”

He reaches up and winds one of Harry’s curls around his finger. When he draws it forward, Harry can see that it’s silvery grey.

“My hair didn’t change back?” Harry cries.

“It did, except for this lock in the front.” Draco pulls Harry up by the arm. “Look in the mirror.”

Harry stands to study his reflection in the mirror over the fireplace. There he is, back to his old self again, but with the silver streak over his old lightning-shaped scar. And there’s Draco beside him, looking like his old self, too. He’s not as flawlessly beautiful as Peregrine, yet still very handsome in a pointy, aristocratic way. And he’s much less overwhelming this way, Harry’s happy to say.

“So, you said something about breakfast?” Draco says, with a charming tilt of his head.

“You’ll let me make it?”

“I’ll admit, you are a much better cook than I am. And I don’t fancy going to Diagon just yet, looking like myself. That will be something to get used to all over again.”

“I can Apparate to London and go to a Muggle supermarket.” Harry gives Draco a considering look. “D’you want to come along?”

Draco snorts. “Not particularly.”

“It won’t hurt you to try it!”

“I know that,” Draco snaps, then looks contrite about it. “I’m sorry. Not today, after everything. But… maybe another time?”

“We can do that. You know, it’s nice in the Muggle world. No one recognises me. As a matter of fact,” Harry adds, with a teasing smile, “no one’s ever had to come to my rescue out there, like they did when I got mobbed in Carkitt Market.”

Draco ducks his chin. “Ah, yes. That. You see… I thought perhaps you’d like to be rescued, for once. As a change of pace.”

“I have been rescued before. But never in quite such a… romantic way.”

“Romantic!” Draco scoffs. “Hardly, Potter.”

But when he meets Harry’s eyes in the mirror, there’s a hopefulness in his expression, a small ember of something that’s ready to catch—with the right kindling.

Harry lifts his hand just enough that their fingertips brush. The room is so quiet that he easily hears the hitch in Draco’s breathing as he leans in.

“I think,” he whispers, “it’s time you called me Harry.”
