What are the Rooters' individual personalities? Meaning what are each members traits and quirks.

Servantis, who is now a Uxorite, comes across as cold, stern and is very calculated. He's not really evil though, in terms of laughing manically as he enjoys bringing pain to people, but more so what he does he sees as needed. He truly believes he is just protecting the universe from Ben and the Omnitrix. He's also really smart and patience, able to make plans that can exist for years. Swift, who is a full bloodied aerophibian, is very alert, quick to react, and knows when to make her own calls. She's the scout of the team, so she knows how to stick to the shadows and flight silently. She does have some bite to her, and can give a really mean glare. Leander, who is now an appoplexian, is very different compared to his species. He appears to be mute, and doesn't even make growling or roaring sounds. He's a full on silent fighter, which can be terrifying compared to what most people expect out of an appoplexian. He also always listens to orders, never going against what Servantis says, even if the others of the team backchat sometimes. Zyme, who the made up fourth member and a polymorph, is crafty and creative. She seems to be the only one who kind of has fun with her job, even if she knows how to take it seriously. She's the youngest of the crew, and thus hasn't been on the job as long as them.

Jubileumi fesztiválozás: Alestorm, Tankcsapda, Leander Kills, Lord, Sing Sing – Tábor Fesztivál, Alsóörs, 2023.08.24-25.

Jubileumi évéhez érkezett a Tábor Fesztivál, immár 15. alkalommal gyűltek össze a rockerek, hogy a Balaton partján szórakozzanak egy nagyot. Ennek apropójából a szervezők  – a fesztivál történetében először – nemzetközi előadókat is szerződtettek (a Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sonst és az Alestormot), még ha az egyik zenekart félig-meddig magyarnak is tekintjük.

Két napon utaztam le, és munka mellett csak némely bandába sikerült belenéznem. Persze a közlekedés sem könnyítette meg a lejutást, mindkét nap lépésben haladtunk egy ideig az autópályán. A fesztivál területe szerintem nem sokban változott, ami érthető, hiszen ugyanazon a helyen van már évek óta. Nagyobb változást ott tapasztaltam, ahova a közönség nem láthat be. A backstage-ben, amin érződött, hogy a nemzetközi zenekarok már más szintet igényelnek. De nézzük is, kiket láttam és azok milyenek voltak.

Csütörtökön a Leander Kills volt az első, akit láttam és szegényeket ezen a napon az ág is húzta. Amikor utoljára láttam őket, még teljesen más felállásban léptek fel, így kíváncsi voltam, mennyiben érződik majd a tagok cseréje. Ha pusztán a zeneiséget és a színpadi produktumot nézzük, akkor azt kell mondanom, nem éreztem visszaesést. Ez természetesen részben annak is köszönhető, hogy a tengely változatlan, Jankai Valentin dobos és Köteles Leander frontember párosa nagyon látványosan, szórakoztatóan és megbízhatóan prosperál.

Baromi jó alapot adtak a két új gitárosnak, Nyerják Gábornak és Barkóczi Bencének.

De, ezen a napon a szerencse nagyon elpártolt tőlük, szinte folyamatosan kisebb-nagyobb technikai gondokkal küszködtek, a technikusok rendszeres „látványelemei” voltak a színpadképnek, ráadásul Leander az elején elmesélte, hogy előző nap mindhárom gitáros elvágta az ujját, így leragasztva próbáltak maximumot nyújtani. A hangulatra nem is lehetett panasz, a közönség szinte a bandával együtt énekelte a dalokat, talán érezték, hogy elkél a támogatás a csapatnak.

Támogatás érkezett máshonnan is, három szám erejéig az ugyanezen a napon fellépő Alestormból beugrott Bodor Máté kisegíteni a csapatot, aki amolyan ötödik embere a zenekarnak. Nem szoktam Leander-koncertre járni, talán ez volt a második találkozásunk, de furcsa volt Mátét egy teljesen más környezetben, más stílust játszva, más outfitben látni. A vége felé Leander lejött az első sor elé, kölcsönkért valakitől egy Csillám póni fejfedőt, és abban énekelt a közönség nagy örömére. Szó se róla, elég nagy kontrasztot mutatott a vicces fejfedő és a hörgés.

A csapatra és a közönségre nem lehet panasz, csak az a fránya technika… Vigyetek kórházba / Túlélő / Sötét én / Majd úgy sírsz értem / Falakon túl / Boldogság virág / Szeresd bennem / Örökzöld / Nyolcadik főbűn / Madár / Híd / Csak te / Viharom, tavaszom // Véres kardot hoztam / Szerelmetlen dal / Te leszel a párom / Valami folyjon

A technikai bakik és pechek szöges ellentéte volt a másik színpadon kezdő Sing Sing. A fesztivál valamilyen szinten nekik hazai pálya, ennek megfelelően egy igen látványos és jó koncert adtak. Mire átértem hozzájuk, már játszottak és az utóbbi években – egy fellépéstől eltekintve – őket sem láttam (a rengeteg külföldi koncert bőven elég). Azt kell mondjam, nagyon egyben van a csapat.

Persze nekem furcsa volt a lassan 10 éve az együttesben éneklő Sipos Tomi látványa, őt máshol szoktam meg.

És bevallom, a vége felé előadott Halál a májra dal alatt többször is a mirigyesek sorai ugrottak be. Visszatérve a koncertre, az elején érkező slágerek és pörgősebb nóták, meg persze a bevetett pirotechnikai arzenál kellően beindította a publikumot. Itt nem volt semmilyen technikai malőr, a lángok és szikrák is megfelelő helyen és mértékben üzemeltek.

Ennél a színpadnál a fotósárokba még hatalmas hangfalak voltak lepakolva és utólag azt kell mondjam, talán ez a színpad jobban szólt, mint a „fő” színpad. A szett közepén hagyták egy picit a közönséget megpihenni, hogy aztán a végén megint a nagy durranásokon legyen a hangsúly. Hazai pályát említettem az elején, a fesztivál ex(?) és jelenlegi szervezője is erősíti a csapatot, apa és fia.

Jó választás volt Lévai-Hangyássy Bence csatasorba állítása, ugyanis az eredeti tagok már nem szántják fel a színpadot, ellenben Bence folyamatosan ezerrel pörgött. És ha már Bence és fesztiválszervező, másnap este láttuk, ahogy ballagtunk a fesztivál területén, hogy egy létra tetejéről éppen világító testeket szerelt fel egy állvány oldalára. Nem az a kanapén tespedő szervező, respekt!

Szóval hangulatilag ebbe a buliba sem lehet belekötni, elég látványosra is sikeredett, engem csak a balladás középrész ültetett le. De jó volt ezeket a rég hallott dalokat újra hallani!

Pirates Of The Balaton. Talán nincs még egy olyan külföldi banda, aki ennyire elkötelezett a Balaton mellett, mint az Alestorm. És végre a tó partján léphettek fel, ráadásul már előző este megérkeztek a helyszínre, így mindenre (is) jutott idő. A fellépés előtti estén a srácok a közönséggel múlatták az időt, ezzel is hatalmas örömöt szerezve a magyar rajongóknak. Természetesen abban a hőségben nem hagyhattak ki egy kis csobbanást, úszkálást a tóban, ennek megfelelően már eleve jó hangulatban kezdtek neki az estének.

A koncert után mondtam – talán Garethnek -, hogy míg külföldön a csapat „csak” egy nemzetközi zenekar, akik nagyon sikeresek, Magyarországon mi magyar bandaként tekintünk rájuk, köszönhetően a magyar tagnak, Bodor Máténak, a magyar menedzsernek és persze a két magyar dalnak. Talán mindezeknek köszönhetően sikeredett emlékezetesre a show, mert a tagok a koncert után eszméletlen buliként aposztrofálták a fellépést.

A csapat és a közönség szimbiózisán kívül az sem árt, ha jól muzsikál az „őrült ötös”, ami meg is valósult. Chris profi módon vezényelt, Elliot a billentyűfutamokon kívül faszán screamelt, amikor kellett, a Gareth-Peter páros szórakoztatóan hozta a biztos alapokat, hogy a többiek tudjanak lubickolni.

Máté pedig… Máté volt, olyan, amilyennek kedveljük. Lazán, mosolyogva hozta tételeit, a színpad minden szegletét bejárta, ami Garethre és Chrisre is igaz volt. És közben élvezte, hogy a közönség szereti, amit csinál, mégis csak a mi fiunk. Többször említette már, hogy neki a magyar koncertek a legfontosabbak, a szokásos koncertvégi átkötő szövegben ezt nyomatékosította is, elmondva, hogy a nyári turnén ezt az estét várta legjobban. Pedig többek között volt egy Wacken főszínpados fellépése is a bandának!

Mi az, hogy szereti a közönség, amit csinálnak? Egyszerűen megőrülnek a csapatért! A dalokat szinte folyamatosan énekelték, az Alestorm-pólók mennyisége pedig talán minden eddigi számot überelt. A felfújható kalózkardok, kalózfejfedők mind felbukkantak a táncparketten, de nekem egy transzparens volt, ami mindent vitt: a zenekar valamelyik kiadványának limitált verziójában a bónuszlemezen a dalok kutyák által „felugatott” verziói kaptak helyet, na, valaki ezt a verziót követelte!

A programot nagyon jól szedték össze, az utolsó két lemezt ugyan picit előtérbe helyezve, az összes lemezről elővettek valami slágert. Feldolgozás is szerepelt, hiszen a Hangover már klasszikus közönségkedvenc (nekem is az egyik kedvencem), amiben náluk tök természetes, hogy egy rappelő cápa tűnik fel a színpadon, aki miután kiszövegelte magát, megpróbált beleharapni a gitárosba.

Nem sokkal egymás után érkezett két olyan dal, aminek a szövegét az is velük együtt énekli, aki először találkozik velük. A Mexico és a P.A.R.T.Y. mára két olyan hangulatfokozó nótává vált, ami az amúgy sem gyenge hangulatot egy magasabb szintre emeli. A normál műsort egy alig másfél perces őrület zárta le, a Shit Boat kellően kifacsarta a közönséget, akik a ráadás előtt kaptak egy kis szusszanásnyi időt. És ha már kipihentük magunkat, mindjárt jött a galeri, hogy csak úgy megigyák a söreinket, bár szerintem a közönség önként dalolva is odaadta volna, ha szépen kéri a zenekar. A refrénben érkező „Drink! Drink! Drink!” szöveget az egész Tábor együtt üvöltötte a csapattal.

Természetesen nem maradhatott ki a Magyarország dal, ez amolyan kötelező eleme lesz innentől a hazai koncerteknek, és előtte jött a Máté-speech, amit fentebb említettem. Ha eddig jó volt a hangulat, akkor ez ennél a nótánál megsokszorozódott, azt gondolom, aki picit is szereti a metálzenét, annak egyszer ezt a dalt élőben kell hallania, mert valami hihetetlen hangulatot teremt. Mondhatnám, hogy a koncertnek több csúcspontja is volt, de ezen felrobbant a tábor. Az országról szóló dal, magyar nyelvű refrénnel, kultikus italunk említésével, és a dalban szereplő tónál, ennél nem lehet ikonikusabb pillanat, azt gondolom.

És hogy mire is figyelnek a srácok! A turné összes állomásán a „Kacsamesék” főcímdala megy outróként, természetesen eredeti nyelven, de nálunk a magyar nyelvű verzió hangzott el, miközben Mátét az első sorok szeretgették halálra, Chris a közönség közé ugorva szörfözött és standing ovationnel búcsúztak el a táborlakók Balaton kalózaitól. A tagok egyöntetűen az egyik leghangulatosabb és legjobb koncertnek tartották ezt a bulit, nem véletlenül.

Ez a közel 70 perces műsor, mindenféle üresjárat nélkül zakatolt át rajtunk. Keelhauled / No Grave But The Sea / The Skunk’n Norwegian / Alestorm / Under Blackened Banners / Hangover / The Battle Of Cape Fear River / Mexico / Magnetic North / P.A.R.T.Y. /Captain Morgan’s Revenge / Shit Boat (No Fans) // Drink / Zombies Ate My Pirate Ship / Magyarország / Fucked With An Anchor

A számomra második napon a dolgaim mellett az első banda, akiket sikerült látnom, a Lord volt. Évente legalább egy Lord-koncertbe beleszaladok, szinte kivétel nélkül valamelyik fesztiválon vagy valaki előzenekaraként. Az idei a Tábor fesztiválra esett és nem kellett csalódnom, a megszokott minőség most sem csorbult.

Ebbe a bő egy órába szinte az összes kedvencem bekerült, így én baromira élveztem a koncertet. Vannak olyan bandák, akik ha rosszabb napot fognak is ki, akkor sem tudnak egy bizonyos szint alatt teljesíteni. Ezt nem azért mondom, mert rosszabb napjuk volt, hanem mert én még nem voltam rossz Lord-koncerten. A dalok eleve évtizedek óta meghatározzák életemet, mondjuk úgy, hogy ha ritkán is látom-hallom őket, az első taktusok után a winchesterből jönnek elő a dalok és a második sortól már én is a kórus tagja vagyok.

Másrészt a csapat motorja és tengelye, a Pohl Misi–Erős Attila páros, korukat meghazudtolóan tolják a mai napig!

Azt hiszem néhány fiatal frontember példát vehetne Misiről, hogy mennyire jól tud bánni a közönséggel.

A három fiatal a hangszerüknek köszönhetően statikusan vesznek részt a műsorban, bár a legfrissebb tag, Világi Zolika dobos játéka látványban alaposan feldobja a hangulatot. A korábban a Demonlordban is játszó doboson azt láttam, hogy a rockos témákat metálos stílusban játszotta, miközben a dalok nagy részében a vokálozásból is kivette a részét.

És akkor vissza a főszereplőkre, akik szinte folyamatosan kilépve a színpadról, a fotósárokba lerakott hangfalakon lépkedtek, játszottak és énekeltek, vagy vezényelték a közönséget, akik nagyrészt keménymagos lordosok lehettek, mert szinte maguktól tudták, az adott dalra milyen koreográfiával kell reagálniuk.

És ennek a kapcsolódásnak köszönhetően egy jó kis Lord-koncert vezette fel a nap headlinerének fellépését.

A Tankcsapda szinte már rendszeres vendége a Tábor fesztiválnak. Az elmúlt három évben felléptek és valahogy mindig különlegesre sikeredett az aktuális este.

Szűk egy héttel korábban láttam a Tankokat a tűzijáték előtt és akkor is azt beszéltük a haverokkal, hogy ezek a közel órás/hetven perces előadások nagyon jól működnek náluk. Nem azt mondom, hogy nem szívesen hallgatom őket a normál hosszúságú, közel két órás koncerteken, de itt is szinte egy pillanatnyi üresjárat nélkül dózerolták le a tábort.

Amikor a Parkban a banda kezdő tételnek választotta A négy című nótát, akkor először meglepődtem, de már első alkalommal rá kellett jönnöm, hogy nagyon jó választás volt. Ahogy a hangszerek egymás után lépnek be a dalba, kiváló alkalmat nyújt a srácoknak, hogy egyesével lépjenek színpadra és elkezdjék az estét. A közönség is fel tudja venni a fonalat, amit a záró akkordig el sem enged.

Ha az előző napi Alestorm-beszámolóban pozitívumként említettem, hogy milyen jól válogatták össze a műsort, akkor a Tankokra ez ugyanúgy igaz, szinte mindegyik lemezükről vettek elő valamit. Bár az furcsa, hogy az utolsó albumról semmi sem került bele a műsorba, viszont a nemrég megjelent Ez a nap az a nap ilyen rövid idő alatt is szépen belesimult a régi klasszikusok közé. A színpadképet annyival toldották meg, hogy a megszokotthoz képest pár „lángot” még beüzemeltek és így elég korrekt kis színpadi látvánnyal támogatták meg a koncertet.

Ahogy egy korábbi interjúban mesélte Sidi, még nem teljesen tudja belevetni magát a felfokozott hangulatba, a headbangelésen kívül viszont minden mást tud, ezért a színpad minden egyes pontját bejárta. A buli vége felé, játék közben még egy húrszakadás is megakasztotta pár pillanatig, de Márk, a technikusa hamar nyakába akasztott egy másik hathúrost, így minimális döccenővel folytatódhatott az előadás.

A banda régi motorosai most is remek formában voltak, Fejes lazán hozta a biztos alapokat, amihez Laci is csatlakozott. Ő amúgy a megszokotthoz képest szerintem többször hagyta el a megszokott helyét, úgy tűnt, ő is úgy élvezi a koncertet, mint a közönség, mert rengeteget mosolygott. És hogy a 30 foknál melegebbet hozó időjárásban bőrdzsekiben nyomta le a műsort… le a kalappal!

A tőle megszokott átkötő szövegekbe egy kis csavart tett egy különleges apropó miatt. Az előző nap még a színpadon zenélő szervező, Lévai-Hangyássy Bence ezen a napon ünnepelte születésnapját, így Laci egy kis anekdotával vezette fel a köszöntőt, majd Bence is a színpadra érkezett, hogy a banda felköszöntse, illetve hogy a közönség megtapsolja.

E rövid kitérő után folytatódott a show, amin Laci megemlítette, hogy aki többet szeretne látni a csapatból, az jöjjön el szeptember 22-én a Budapest Parkba, ugyanis a banda idén is duplázik Budapest legnagyobb szabadtéri helyszínén, ahol több meglepetés is vár a rajongókra. A „Pesten megjelent Isten” elnevezésű koncert zárja a banda nyári turnéját és ez lesz az új dal címe is, ami a koncert másnapján érkezik.

Pörgős, sallangmentes, közönségkedvencek tömkelegével zsúfolt programot adtak a srácok. Ahogy előző nap Leander, most Sidi érkezett le az első sor elé, ahol a taposókra állva játszott a közönség legnagyobb örömére.

Nem volt egyszerű lejutnia, mert a fotósárok szélén rengetegen voltak kíváncsiak a koncertre, a napi fellépők egy része is ott toporgott. Hogy a szülinapos Bence szavaival zárjam: „A Tankcsapda az Tankcsapda!” A négy / Köpök rátok / Jönnek a férgek / Törölköző teniszütőkkel / Mindig péntek / Mitől legyen? / Nem kell semmi / Ez a nap az a nap / Rock a nevem / Gyűrd össze a lepedőt / Mennyország Tourist / Ez az a ház / Baj van!! / Fordulj fel / A Rock & Roll rugója // Be vagyok rúgva

Hogy mit hoz a jövő, majd kiderül. Mindenesetre jó irányba indult el a fesztivál. Vélhetően jövőre is lesznek nemzetközi bandák, aminek én nagyon örülök, mert mára eljutottunk oda, hogy igazi rock/metálfesztiválnak csak a Tábor Fesztivál maradt a nyári felhozatalból.

The backing instrumentation is all rubbed wineglasses. I’ve performed it a few times and it’s SO GOOD.

Pop: He Dreams He’s Awake by Stars, Lovers In a Dangerous Time - Barenaked Ladies, Under Pressure (you should hear us play it on handbells), lots of stuff by Ben Folds, and Great Big Sea. I won’t open the musical theatre wormhole, but there’s a LOT in there, like, Wait For It from Hamilton, Hero and Leander by Adam Guettel, and half of the Sondheim catalogue. Lots of ‘80s stuff, too. Guilty pleasures: I’ll always dance to Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go by Wham! and You’re A Strange Animal by Gowan.

Favorite Instrument: Voice? A cappella is my jam. Also the other ones I play (handbells and alto sax).

Random Fact about Me: I was a student dramaturg for the world premiere production of a play that was delayed by 70 years. It was based on a Pushkin work, with music by Prokofiev, and was originally directed by the famous Russian director Vsevolod Meyerhold in the 1930s, but was suppressed by Stalinist forces for its political messaging before its premiere. A professor at my undergrad located Meyerhold’s notes, the music department finished the score, and we put it on stage for the first time. It got a lot of coverage in both the New York and Russian press, and it was really, really cool.

Favorite Authors: Goddamn this is an impossible question for an English prof who also wrote a weekly books column for three years. I have a lot of individual books/plays that I love. I’m going to pick my old standbys Robertson Davies, Tony Kushner, and Stephen Sondheim and leave it at that.

To Quarantine or Not: The Hard Choices Schools Are Leaving to Parents and Staff

On the second day of high school in Texas, Natosha Daniels’ 14-year-old daughter went all day without eating because she did not want to remove her mask.

The teen’s school has a couple of thousand students, and the cafeteria was crowded. Plus Round Rock Independent School District outside Austin didn’t require masks, so some students weren’t wearing them. Even her honors biology teacher was maskless.

Daniels said her daughter, who like her is fully vaccinated, is terrified of bringing home the virus because it could infect her 7-year-old sibling, who is too young for a shot.

“She was like, ‘Mama I’m going to pass out,’” said Daniels, a Round Rock Black Parents Association member and former assistant principal in the district.

“Every morning I wake up with knots in my chest, just like, ‘Am I making the right decision, putting myself and my child at risk for my older two to go to school?’” said Daniels, who is immunocompromised. “And my husband was like, ‘Well the option still stands for you to go get an Airbnb and move out’ with my youngest. … Do we sacrifice our savings? It’s so hard.”

After a difficult year or more of virtual learning, parents are eager to have their children back in classrooms. But even as the highly transmissible delta variant surges, school districts like Daniels’ aren’t beefing up protocols to prevent infections. Masks aren’t mandated or enforced, according to teachers, parents and officials in several states. Physical distancing is nearly impossible. To top it off, students exposed to covid may not be required to quarantine despite guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, risking an even more rapid spread among children, the youngest of whom aren’t yet eligible for vaccination.

The CDC advises quarantining up to 14 days for people who have had close contact with an infected person — within 6 feet for at least 15 minutes over a 24-hour period. (It exempts vaccinated people without symptoms.) This summer, the agency drafted an exception for schools: It’s not considered close contact if both the infected and exposed students “correctly and consistently” wore masks. That means an unvaccinated but masked student who was exposed wouldn’t have to quarantine.

But whether school districts follow CDC guidelines is an open question. And, in many cases, counties, states and the CDC don’t issue the same advice.

Even if districts follow CDC guidance, success hinges on whether students consistently wear masks. In Round Rock, for example, quarantine is “strongly” recommended for students and staff members who had close contact with those infected, essentially leaving it up to parents whether to take a child out of school.

“An optional quarantine just doesn’t work,” said Allison Stewart, lead epidemiologist at Williamson County and Cities Health District, which oversees 12 school districts including most Round Rock schools. When not required, “it seems that there’s only a cursory effort to actually identify contacts.” And then only “a cursory effort to quarantine.”

“There is more transmission occurring in a school setting than there is in the community right now,” Stewart said, “which is the exact opposite of what happened last year.”

The nation’s largest school districts are mostly not following the CDC’s close-contact exception for masked students, said Bree Dusseault, an analyst at the Center on Reinventing Public Education who is tracking state and district policies. The center reviewed 100 large and urban school districts and found that most of them gave students who are fully vaccinated and have close contact with an infected student an exemption from quarantine. Some require covid testing for students to return earlier than recommended, while others exempt those who’ve recently recovered from covid and, assumedly, have antibodies.

“Districts are managing on-the-ground politics,” Dusseault said. “You may find leaders relying less on scientific recommendations and data and more on local preferences” and on “what they’re hearing.”

“We know that masks aren’t perfect,” said Debra Pace, superintendent of the School District of Osceola County in Florida. Fully vaccinated people without symptoms are exempt from quarantine, but Osceola schools require any exposed students to quarantine for four to 10 days, depending on whether they showed symptoms or had a negative test.

“The delta variant is very different,” Pace said. “As much as I hate to quarantine kids, if we don’t quarantine, we risk having to shut a school down, which we absolutely don’t want to do.”

Each school’s decision about who counts as a close contact affects contact tracing, a laborious process officials use to slow the spread of disease. The CDC’s guidance curtails the number of school-based contacts for follow-up. Epidemiologists support the CDC’s approach, said Janet Hamilton, executive director of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists. She added that having clear consequences for not wearing masks seems to resonate with parents: Kids who don’t mask up will miss more school.

“So many parents are interested — and I think rightly so — in having their children have in-person learning,” Hamilton said.

But in Round Rock, protocols are squishy in part because state orders and guidelines conflict with federal recommendations. Only after the courts got involved did Round Rock ISD add a strong mask mandate last Thursday — a week into school and after dozens of new positive cases and hundreds of new close contacts among students were reported.

Ben Sterling, president of the local teachers union Education Round Rock, said staffers and students alike are not incentivized to follow covid rules, particularly related to quarantine. For staff members, one round of quarantine would use all 10 days of personal and sick leave they get annually. Those days roll over, but Sterling knows of teachers with health issues who haven’t banked any. “The ones who are most vulnerable are going to get hit hardest, as per usual,” he said.

Dusseault said Round Rock’s policy is unusual because it’s optional. But the district is hardly alone — neighboring Leander ISD has a similar policy. Round Rock ISD requires anyone who tests positive for covid or is a probable case to quarantine for 10 days. For close contacts, it’s merely suggested “because parents and students have a right to a free, appropriate public education under the federal law,” said Jenny LaCoste-Caputo, Round Rock ISD’s chief of public affairs and communications.

Leniency about covid safety doesn’t sit well with Natosha Daniels. “I feel sick” about it, she said. “At best, they are, like, caving to this violent group of right-wing parents and, at worst, it’s like a blatant willingness to increase our community spread.”

Quarantine isn’t required for Round Rock employees because they would have to use personal and sick leave, LaCoste-Caputo said. The board of trustees approved covid leave only for staff members who test positive.

It is also “just not having the backing of our state government,” said Amy Weir, president of the Round Rock ISD board of trustees.

The Texas legislature did not fund virtual learning, so school districts are covering the costs themselves. Weir said Round Rock ISD is paying $17.5 million to offer virtual learning for students younger than 12, who cannot get vaccinated. For older students, teachers upload handouts of curated lessons.

On the second day of classes, the middle school where Sterling teaches saw its first case. He and another teacher said the student who tested positive was sometimes maskless and around others without masks. Yet, they said, the school told the families of that child’s classmates that no one was a close contact.

The school, they said, is not requiring seating charts, which would help staff members track student movement, nor do school officials know who is vaccinated or unvaccinated, which factors into the school district’s close-contact definition. It’s all handled on the honor system.

“You’re saying, ‘Choose between going to work and quarantining your child for 10 days,’” Daniels said. “This is the world that we are in — creates these systems that leave parents with no choice.”

To Quarantine or Not: The Hard Choices Schools Are Leaving to Parents and Staff

On the second day of high school in Texas, Natosha Daniels’ 14-year-old daughter went all day without eating because she did not want to remove her mask.

The teen’s school has a couple of thousand students, and the cafeteria was crowded. Plus Round Rock Independent School District outside Austin didn’t require masks, so some students weren’t wearing them. Even her honors biology teacher was maskless.

Daniels said her daughter, who like her is fully vaccinated, is terrified of bringing home the virus because it could infect her 7-year-old sibling, who is too young for a shot.

“She was like, ‘Mama I’m going to pass out,’” said Daniels, a Round Rock Black Parents Association member and former assistant principal in the district.

“Every morning I wake up with knots in my chest, just like, ‘Am I making the right decision, putting myself and my child at risk for my older two to go to school?’” said Daniels, who is immunocompromised. “And my husband was like, ‘Well the option still stands for you to go get an Airbnb and move out’ with my youngest. … Do we sacrifice our savings? It’s so hard.”

After a difficult year or more of virtual learning, parents are eager to have their children back in classrooms. But even as the highly transmissible delta variant surges, school districts like Daniels’ aren’t beefing up protocols to prevent infections. Masks aren’t mandated or enforced, according to teachers, parents and officials in several states. Physical distancing is nearly impossible. To top it off, students exposed to covid may not be required to quarantine despite guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, risking an even more rapid spread among children, the youngest of whom aren’t yet eligible for vaccination.

The CDC advises quarantining up to 14 days for people who have had close contact with an infected person — within 6 feet for at least 15 minutes over a 24-hour period. (It exempts vaccinated people without symptoms.) This summer, the agency drafted an exception for schools: It’s not considered close contact if both the infected and exposed students “correctly and consistently” wore masks. That means an unvaccinated but masked student who was exposed wouldn’t have to quarantine.

But whether school districts follow CDC guidelines is an open question. And, in many cases, counties, states and the CDC don’t issue the same advice.

Even if districts follow CDC guidance, success hinges on whether students consistently wear masks. In Round Rock, for example, quarantine is “strongly” recommended for students and staff members who had close contact with those infected, essentially leaving it up to parents whether to take a child out of school.

“An optional quarantine just doesn’t work,” said Allison Stewart, lead epidemiologist at Williamson County and Cities Health District, which oversees 12 school districts including most Round Rock schools. When not required, “it seems that there’s only a cursory effort to actually identify contacts.” And then only “a cursory effort to quarantine.”

“There is more transmission occurring in a school setting than there is in the community right now,” Stewart said, “which is the exact opposite of what happened last year.”

The nation’s largest school districts are mostly not following the CDC’s close-contact exception for masked students, said Bree Dusseault, an analyst at the Center on Reinventing Public Education who is tracking state and district policies. The center reviewed 100 large and urban school districts and found that most of them gave students who are fully vaccinated and have close contact with an infected student an exemption from quarantine. Some require covid testing for students to return earlier than recommended, while others exempt those who’ve recently recovered from covid and, assumedly, have antibodies.

“Districts are managing on-the-ground politics,” Dusseault said. “You may find leaders relying less on scientific recommendations and data and more on local preferences” and on “what they’re hearing.”

“We know that masks aren’t perfect,” said Debra Pace, superintendent of the School District of Osceola County in Florida. Fully vaccinated people without symptoms are exempt from quarantine, but Osceola schools require any exposed students to quarantine for four to 10 days, depending on whether they showed symptoms or had a negative test.

“The delta variant is very different,” Pace said. “As much as I hate to quarantine kids, if we don’t quarantine, we risk having to shut a school down, which we absolutely don’t want to do.”

Each school’s decision about who counts as a close contact affects contact tracing, a laborious process officials use to slow the spread of disease. The CDC’s guidance curtails the number of school-based contacts for follow-up. Epidemiologists support the CDC’s approach, said Janet Hamilton, executive director of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists. She added that having clear consequences for not wearing masks seems to resonate with parents: Kids who don’t mask up will miss more school.

“So many parents are interested — and I think rightly so — in having their children have in-person learning,” Hamilton said.

But in Round Rock, protocols are squishy in part because state orders and guidelines conflict with federal recommendations. Only after the courts got involved did Round Rock ISD add a strong mask mandate last Thursday — a week into school and after dozens of new positive cases and hundreds of new close contacts among students were reported.

Ben Sterling, president of the local teachers union Education Round Rock, said staffers and students alike are not incentivized to follow covid rules, particularly related to quarantine. For staff members, one round of quarantine would use all 10 days of personal and sick leave they get annually. Those days roll over, but Sterling knows of teachers with health issues who haven’t banked any. “The ones who are most vulnerable are going to get hit hardest, as per usual,” he said.

Dusseault said Round Rock’s policy is unusual because it’s optional. But the district is hardly alone — neighboring Leander ISD has a similar policy. Round Rock ISD requires anyone who tests positive for covid or is a probable case to quarantine for 10 days. For close contacts, it’s merely suggested “because parents and students have a right to a free, appropriate public education under the federal law,” said Jenny LaCoste-Caputo, Round Rock ISD’s chief of public affairs and communications.

Leniency about covid safety doesn’t sit well with Natosha Daniels. “I feel sick” about it, she said. “At best, they are, like, caving to this violent group of right-wing parents and, at worst, it’s like a blatant willingness to increase our community spread.”

Quarantine isn’t required for Round Rock employees because they would have to use personal and sick leave, LaCoste-Caputo said. The board of trustees approved covid leave only for staff members who test positive.

It is also “just not having the backing of our state government,” said Amy Weir, president of the Round Rock ISD board of trustees.

The Texas legislature did not fund virtual learning, so school districts are covering the costs themselves. Weir said Round Rock ISD is paying $17.5 million to offer virtual learning for students younger than 12, who cannot get vaccinated. For older students, teachers upload handouts of curated lessons.

On the second day of classes, the middle school where Sterling teaches saw its first case. He and another teacher said the student who tested positive was sometimes maskless and around others without masks. Yet, they said, the school told the families of that child’s classmates that no one was a close contact.

The school, they said, is not requiring seating charts, which would help staff members track student movement, nor do school officials know who is vaccinated or unvaccinated, which factors into the school district’s close-contact definition. It’s all handled on the honor system.

“You’re saying, ‘Choose between going to work and quarantining your child for 10 days,’” Daniels said. “This is the world that we are in — creates these systems that leave parents with no choice.”

A felvidéki Phoenix Rt. egy relatíve friss zenekar a hazai rock/metal színtéren. A trió 2013-ban alakult, bemutatkozó korongjukat pedig még abban az évben meg is jelentették. Azóta további két CD készült a Puss Tamás énekes/basszusgitáros vezette csapat műhelyében, október elején pedig kézbe vehettük a csallóközi banda negyedik, Jelzőfény című nagylemezét. A tíz saját szerzeményt és egy feldolgozást rejtő album slágeres, refrén központú, könnyen emészthető modern rock/metalt tartalmaz. A stílus ismeretében persze óhatatlanul felmerül a Road, a Depresszió, az AWS, a Leander Kills, vagy akár a Rómeó Vérzik neve, mint összehasonlítási alap. A fentiek említésével jó nyomon járunk, de a Phoenix Rt. nem nevezhető egyikük utánérzésének sem, csak a csapásirány egyező. Varga Zoltán producerkedése önmagában garancia arra, hogy egy magyar kiadvány megszólalásával nem lehet gond. Jelen esetben is sikerült egy kellemes, de erőteljesen megdörrenő soundot összehozni. Az első meghallgatást követően nyugtáztam, hogy maguk a dalok is rendben vannak. A hazai modern rock/metal vonalon a legkritikusabb pont a szövegvilág lehet. A borítóra nézve, majd a bookletet fellapozva azonnal szemet szúrt, hogy a srácok sokat komolyodtak az elmúlt időszakban. A friss frontborító, melyet Király Győző fotóinak felhasználásával Nagy Attila készített vitán felül az eddigi legjobbjuk.

A nyitó Nem marad szótlan kapásból a trió eddigi legkeményebb dala, a durva énektémák mellett persze a dallamos refrén már elsőre is a fülekbe ragad. Győrög Márton gitárjai talán még sosem szóltak ilyen keményen. A Nincs mit vesztenem-ben érzek egy kis punk rockot is, nem véletlen, hogy ez a slágeres nóta lett az album elsőként klipesített dala. A hasonló felépítésű Engedd el-t sikerült feldobni egy kis extra billentyűs hangszínnel, a kórus pedig újfent ragadós. A részben akusztikus Ami ránk vár elsőre túl poposnak tűnt, a metalos füleknek kicsit szokniuk kell; ha valami, ez a nóta tényleg rádiós lejátszás után kiált. A címadó számomra a trió eddigi legjobb dala, a zenekar életében első ízben vendégénekes bevonásával.

A friss lemezes Down for Whatever frontembere és Tamás kiválóan hozták össze az erősségeiket, a zúzós alapokra írt szárnyaló énekdallamok egy különösen jól összerakott refrénben teljesednek ki. A Mielőtt elrugaszkodom esetében csak magamat tudom ismételni, ugyanis ennek a dalnak is a refrén a legnagyobb erőssége. A soron következő Fekete ráadásul szokatlan felépítésével eleve a kórussal kezdődik, a srácok a verzékbe ezúttal egy kis rapes részt is csempésztek. Ha az Ami ránk várt poposnak neveztem, akkor ez hatványozottan áll az Elkéstél című szerzeményre is. Egyik sem a szó klasszikus értelmében vett ballada, a gitárok azért ebben a dalban is rendszeresen megdörrennek. A Tiszta lappal már videoklip formájában is bizonyított, a Másnapos szerenád pedig egy könnyed, dallamos punk nóta, az előzmények tükrében kicsit komolytalanabb szöveggel. A záró Kalapács feldolgozás sem lóg ki a saját dalok közül, sikerült a maguk képére formálniuk. A Totem lemezes Nincs baj című nótát csak a dalszövegről ismertem fel, szóval ez esetben nem szolgai másolatról, hanem valóban átdolgozásról van szó.

Akihez közel áll a fent említett zenekarok világa, de még nem futott bele a felvidéki trióba, érdemes belefülelnie a Phoenix Rt. muzsikájába, kezdésnek pedig ez a friss lemez a tökéletes választás! Tamásékban simán benne van, hogy a fenti zenekarok szintjére fejlesszék a bandát, a jó dalok ugyanis adottak, ha a helyzet normalizálódása után végre sikerül ezeket nagyobb koncerteken is bemutatni, újabb kapuk nyílhatnak meg a Phoenix Rt. előtt.

A Dal 2018: Metálzenekar képviseli Magyarországot az Eurovíziós Dalfesztiválon

A Viszlát nyár lett Magyarország legjobb dala, és így az AWS képviselheti Magyarországot az Eurovíziós Dalfesztiválon Lisszabonban.

A Duna és a Duna World csatornán élőben sugárzott döntőbe jutott Dánielfy Gergely az Azt mondtad című dallal, Süle Zsolt a Zöld a májussal, Heincz Gábor BIGA a Good Vibez című számmal, a Leander Kills a Nem szól harang című szerzeménnyel, az AWS Viszlát nyár című dalával, Horváth Tamás a Meggyfával, Király Viktor a Budapest Girl című dallal, valamint a yesyes az I Let You Run Away című szerzeménnyel.

  A finalisták produkciói után a szakmai zsűri tagjai egyenként 4, 6, 8 és 10 pontot adtak az általuk legjobbnak tartott négy dalnak. Az így négyre szűkített mezőnyből Dánielfy Gergely, Király Viktor, a yesyes és az AWS száma közül a tévénézők választották ki a nyertest. A legtöbb szavazatot az AWS kapta, a Viszlát nyár lett Magyarország legjobb dala, és így az AWS képviselheti Magyarországot az Eurovíziós Dalfesztiválon május 8. és 12. között Lisszabonban.

  Az AWS a döntőbe a 4. helyen jutott be, a nézők azonban rájuk adták a legtöbb voksot. A fiatalokból álló, korábban a nagyközönség előtt kevéssé ismert metálzenekar több mint tíz évvel ezelőtt alakult. A Viszlát nyár című dal zenéjét Kökényes Dániel és Brucker Bence gitáros, Schiszler Soma basszusgitáros és Veress Áron dobos szerezte, a szöveget az énekes Siklósi Örs írta. Az AWS eddig három lemezt készített, a Fata Morgana 2011-ben, az Égésföld 2014-ben, a Kint a vízből 2016-ban jelent meg. A zenekar turnézott együtt a Subscribe-bal, a Blind Myselffel és a Roaddal is.

  Siklósi Örs, az AWS frontembere a show-műsor után, A Dal – Kulissza című műsorban elmondta: egyelőre nem tudják felfogni, mi történik velük. Mint a zenekar tagjai elmondták, most az ünneplés következik, utána aztán nagyon intenzív munkás időszak fog elkezdődni.

  A Dal 2018 döntőjében extra fellépőként színpadra lépett Ferenczi György és a Magna Cum Laude, valamint Pápai Joci. A szombati show-műsorban jelentették be, hogy a Leander Kills Nem szól harang című dalával nyerte A Dal 2018 Akusztik verseny fődíját. A Leander Kills a Petőfi Akusztik jóvoltából 52 perces önálló koncertlehetőséget kap, amelyet rögzít és műsorára tűz a Petőfi Rádió és az M2 Petőfi TV.

  A májusi Eurovíziós Dalfesztiválon 43 ország képviselője fog indulni, a magyar versenyző a május 10-i második elődöntőben lép színpadra.
