Due to recent experiences, I am feeling an urge to make an anti-drug-style PSA except it's warning impressionable machine-learning-curious teens to never, ever try a thing called "Huggingface transformers Trainer"
Not. Even. Once.
#and don't even get me started on “unsloth”#this week i learned what “unsloth” actually does when you import it and... man.#i thought i'd seen the worst of “hacky brittle 'it-just-works' (by doing the most cursed shit imaginable) ML python code” but no.#no. unsloth was Worse#and huggingface Trainer is bad enough by itself#did you know it has 131 (one hundred and thirty one!) config arguments and yet it cannot log *more than one loss number at once*#(for like multitask training or whatever)#i don't just mean it's hard to do - i mean its logging mechanism is built from the ground up on the assumption you would never do this.#you'd have to rewrite a bunch of internals to get it working - i.e. basically write a new nontrivial feature on HF's behalf#and just writing your own damn training loop is easier than that lol#it's not that hard kids. take it from me. dataset + dataloader + model(*args) + loss.backward() + opt.step() + opt.zero_grad(). that's it#it'll take you 30 minutes and save you a billion hours down the road#i do not understand computers#(is a category tag)

learning to code!
When I was 9 years old, I learned enough html to code neopets pages, my own geocities websites, and I even made forums on my own sites so my friends could all roleplay together or rant together lol. And then? I forgot so much. I no longer no how to make a forum, or even a 'next page' button - so even the dream of just making a simple blog or webnovel site feels like a huge hurdle now. (9 year old me could probably figure it out in 2 hours).
So I'm relearning! I figured this would be a fun post to place resources I find for coding, since there's coding languages, and I figure maybe if you like running you're blog then you also might be interested in tools for making blogs!
First, for those of you who miss the old geocities and angelfire type of sites to make your own free site on: neocities.org
You can make free sites you can code yourself, the way 9 year old me did. A lot of people have made SUCH amazing sites, it's baffling my mind trying to figure out how they did, I definitely wish I could make an art portfolio site even a fourth as cool as some of the sites people have made on here.
And for those pressed for time, who aren't about to learn coding right now: wix.com is the place I recommend for building a site, it requires no coding skill and is fairly straightforward about adding pages or features by clicking buttons. I used it to make my art portfolio site, I am testing out using it for my webnovel - the alternative is Wordpress, but wix.com is letting me basically make a wordpress blog Inside my own site. It's very beginner friendly in terms of "how the fuck do I set up a 'sign up for updates' message and have my site actually email these people my novel updates?" and "I need a 4x20 grid of my art down the page, that lets people click the art to see it's information and make it bigger."
I did neocities.org's little html tutorial today, it's the part of html I DID remember (links, paragraphs, headers).
My next step is to go through htmldog.com's tutorials. They go from beginner, to intermediate, to CSS. Unlike many a coding tutorial I've seen, they explain what program on your computer you need to WRITE the code in and then how to save it and how to open it. (You'd think this isn't a big deal but I've been looking into how to learn Python for months and I can't find a tutorial explaining what fucking program to write my python in... notepad? do I need something else? I don't fucking know!! My dad finally gave me a printed textbook which supposedly tells you what to download to start... I learned C++ in college and for that you needed Visual Basic to code C++, so I figured I needed Something to Write the fucking python IN.)
#coding#rant#wooh my new CODING TAG#learning to code#i feel very. odd if im honest?#i genuinely knew how to build full fucking forum websites as a child including user sign ups#and i studied Computer Science Engineering in college so i did everything with C++ we were asked to and got As#and then i promptly BLOCKED IT OUT because i#HATED studying c++ SO fucking much. i hated my whole major. i did not like Engineering. i hated it. i was so mentally destroyed#by my college major that when i graduated i got a DIFFERENT job#and do NOTHING related to my major#i want to get into a more tech focused career eventually...since that is what my fucking degree is in#but i've been looking into something with less coding OR trying to teach myself#to like coding as long as its not fucking c++ again... i cant do it. too many bad memories#i think cybersecurity sounds like a fun job.#but u know me. im a person who likes knowing the BASICS#so i feel like i need to Relearn to code and learn python decently#before i try to study cybersecurity specific shit

Now this may not seem like a massive change in format, but boy howdy do I feel proud of myself for writing the functions to automate this ehehehehehe (unfortunately for me ao3 ship stat op used a different formatting for the pre-2020 tables, so I'll have to write another function to sort those ones out too ToT)
#coding#ship stats#python#csv#ao3 ship stats#I'm gonna visualise their annual ship rankings data!#(and likely the tumblr fandom ones too)#but first I gotta clean the source data & build a data base#run all the raw data sets through my code#and then I will have a huge updated more uniform and complete data set#which I can then learn how to visualise#for data portfolio purposes#translation for non-coders: wow code is fun but it looks unimpressive if you don't know#I basically took the base text I copied off the ao3 ship rankings posts on ao3#and wrote a bunch of code that automatically formats it from a to b#into a format that's easier to work with in my code#to be able to put it into a proper database later

I have a new idea for the wip list that will likely actually get made at some point, but I need to learn programming in Python first smh my head
#i'm fairly decent at web dev coding already and i've heard python is pretty easy to learn#which i hope so because i tried programming basic site functions with JS and it made me want to eat my keyboard#anyways i'm not touching this for a little while. i just wanted to speak it into the world so i dont forget (permanently lol)#elkk.txt

My dream is to make a calculator website with all the calculators I've come up with. I have calculators for manufacturing, sewing, uhm the combination of the two, and new calculators for my new job. I don't want to Google for calculators anymore, I just want a site that I can view on my phone and it's just ones for ME and people I teach about them.
I guess I want some modules too like stop watches.
#totes bro#i feel like this would be easy to make because i have like python calculators with a little tinker gui#but i dont know website!#and websites are expensive#maybe for Christmas i can ask my brother to make me one#you should see how complicated my excel sheets are. they have buttons and thing moving across the sheet as you work#my coworkers are always impressed because it looks like 'a program' but it is just excel#i know a little visual basic i guess because i make macros#my point with all of this is I think i would be able to learn websites? and i think I do things with equivalent difficulty#i just websites to be easy

Fellow game devs who are fleeing Unity, what are your thoughts on Godot vs Unreal for making 2D games? I know Unreal is pretty over-powered for most 2D development, but given I'm used to Unity, how is Godot feature-wise? Are there any features it's noticeably lacking?
#basically my question is whether the added annoyance of unreal is worth it#because i can code in c++ well enough but csharp and python are my languages of choice#so i am not loving this unity change!#especially given how much time i've poured into learning how to use it effectively#i have libraries that i reuse in my games!!#argh#idk i will obviously be looking into this more on my own but any insight would be lovely#also apologies for the tag spam -- i'd like this to reach other devs and idk what the common tags are on here#game development#game dev#indie dev#unity#unreal#godot#unity engine

i had completely assumed u knew how to code beforehand you're learning through OL????
Yeah, no, I don't know jack or fuck about coding. All my knowledge basically just comes down to what I can make out by trying to read the game's script files
#I have been thinking of looking around for programming courses or something#i did take gcse computer science and while we were meant to learn python in those lessons uh#basically shit got fucked in every conceivable way so we didn't really get to do much coding#and also i was pretty bad at it when we did have those lessons which bodes well for the present me who wants to try picking it up again#tbf though i was 15 back then and I am now very close to being 22 so who knows maybe things will turn out better#man i sure am rambling in here
