About your post here: I’ve noticed recently a lot more posts in general on tumblr just being condescending and mean to kids for not knowing things and it annoys me too, don’t these people remember what it’s like to be a young teen and not know basically anything? Even when you’re trying to learn? How is it their fault??? So frustrating
YEAH I feel you. I didn't mention it in the og post but those posts do seem to be geared towards teens and kids more often than not I think (that's just based on personal observation tho, which is obvs biased).
As for why- tbh that's a topic I have a lot of thoughts on? Mostly baseless speculation since I have no real experience studying this kind of thing and again idk if it's even a real phenomenon or if it just feels like one to me.
Tbh one reason may be that during the pandemic, more ppl began staying inside, on screens, which meant more teens started exhibiting Chronically Online Behaviour™ (bc they literally were chronically online), which means more ppl started losing patience and being snide when trying to steer them away from such behavior (bc everyone's patience is worn thin by a pandemic!)
And like. I know we say it most often as a joke on here BUT genuinely the user base of Tumblr aging bc the ppl originally on it as teens haven't left (for good reason lol) is probably a contributing factor.
It's mostly a good thing but like you said- they genuinely might not remember much about their teen years! Or at least they don't sympathize much w/ their teenage self and that's reflected in their interaction w/ young ppl.
Ppl sometimes don't want to have to put in the extra work that comes w/ talking to someone who has considerably less life experience than you. It's understandable but sometimes ppl just get miffed abt it all.
Also like. This is a broad and complex topic so I'm going to limit myself talking abt it too much but- since early online culture and in especially in recent years, people on the internet seem genuinely think that being annoying or ignorant is truly a justification for being bullied and/or harassed.
Like it takes different forms across different groups and platforms but it's very much a part of the tone of a lot of online conversations. And I am NOT saying that well meaning but snide advice posts are the same as bullying- far from it! They're two very different things and the latter is at least well intentioned most of the time.
But I think needlessly aggressive conversations are a much bigger feature of online spaces than irl spaces and thus they slip into posts that don't even mean it/aren't even particularly invested in the topic at hand, all bc ppl perceive the target audience as ignorant or annoying.
Which isn't to say that it's not a two way street- most ppl online are like this! Oftentimes I'm like this, even when I don't mean to be! sometimes teens are ignorant or annoying and sometimes they're downright mean but. being a dick abt advice isn't going to change that. and I'd argue that normalizing being needlessly mean about innocuous topics is just gonna make them worse in the long run? So. Something something 4D chess.
And like, That's really what makes posts like that so frustrating- they want to be informative or educational but they go about it in such a counterproductive and off putting way! The accusatory tone and condescension just makes the reader defensive and unwilling to learn bc they feel attacked...when the posts entire point to be educational.
my og post wasn't phrased particularly nice either, bc I was angry and upset- and that's probably not gonna convince ppl to thoughtfully reevaluate their behavior! If I went into a post with the intention to do that I'd probably word everything differently.
Sometimes a firm hand is needed or expected when it comes to serious topics and I am NOT advocating for ppl to tone police themselves when it comes to things near and dear to them (truly hope that comes across in this post)
but if someone is complaining about how ppl use their personal blogs, navigate websites that don't work like any other current social media, or any other trivial task that doesn't come natural unless you have experience w/ it...it just feels like a waist of energy on everyone's part.
This has all been a very long winded way of saying- I totally get you and agree. it's just not productive to write out a vent-y rant on the same post as your informational guide and the frustration and embarrassment that comes from being condescended to online isn't productive either. Be mad, for sure, just don't try and teach ppl a skill or lesson while you're mad. There's a reason parents shouting at their kids during homework about how simple the problem is doesn't teach them anything.

free PillowFort invites - would you like one? what is PF? glad you asked!
Do you know about PillowFort?  Did you find yourself nodding (nay, weeping) about the post I reblogged yesterday about how the tumblr platform sucks for community building?  The one with the quote, “When Authors stopped being friends and turned into content providers, new fandom members never learned to care.” from  zoinomiko?  PILLOWFORT MAY BE EXACTLY RIGHT FOR YOU.  Lemme explain!
Pillowfort is like the best of the LJ/DW platform and the best of the tumblr platform, if all of tumblr had most of x-kit installed (snort).  (forgive me if this list is long but that’s because PF is fucking amazing - I can’t help it!)
Such as:
following:  you can follow others, they can follow you. your feed will be an endless scroll, like here.
reblogs - you like a post, reblog jand it will show up on your PF blog to all of your followers, just like here.
HOWEVER - if you are the original post creator, you control it. Forever.
if you are the post author/creator, you can delete it at any time - and it will be deleted everywhere. (god haven’t you wished you could do this for some of your tumblr posts where reblogs have content you despise but are now permanently out in the world???)
to reiterate: if you made a post, you are in complete control as to its existence - it never ends up reblogged out of your control, because it’s never embedded on someone elses’ blog as new content, even though it’s visible in the PF feeds of those who reblog from you.
you can tag posts when you reblog them, just like here
you can comment on posts (whether you reblog them or not)
as a commenter, you can delete your own comment at any time.
the comment structure is NESTED - like a well constructed forum or DW or LJ.  If someone responds to you, it shows up indented under your comment. If someone comments on the original post, it shows up as not indented.  Just as you’d expect.
if you’ve only ever been on tumblr you have no idea how much this creates relationships and real community.  That post that I reblogged yesterday that talked about how “When Authors stopped being friends and turned into content providers, new fandom members never learned to care.” - THAT is what a forum designed for real discussion in a comprehensible visual format creates.
As the post creator, you can delete anyone’s comments.  You are in charge of the vibe on your own original post.
this creates self-selected community involvement - if you’re a jerk, nice people will un-friend your blog and just leave it alone.  If you foster happy healthy vibes, people will appear and join and comment.
This fosters a huge golden-rule environment that made some blogs a huge happy success on LJ/DW where mean people were banned and kind people were welcomed and celebrated; and some mean toxic successes - where healthy people went somewhere nicer.  I‘m not even gonna bold that.  Because fuck that dynamic on the entire internet.
you can create original posts your followers can read/see on their feeds
you can make these available to all without restrictions
OR you can make them any of these options:
un-rebloggable
un-commentable
marked/categorized as NSFW to help others screen
or visible only to mutuals
(a feature whereby we can create our own curated ‘friend groups’ is promised. remember, this is entirely new code they’re creating. features are being requested and implemented as fast as they can roll them out in a functional way)
Incidentally, if you have a problem, the staff is actually real humans who really respond to you! Shocking, isn’t it?
there are communities you can join or create - have a particular fandom or RL interest?  find or create a community - search by tags!
There are different post types to choose from:
text
picture
video (currently only youtube, but that will expand)
link (shows a preview of the website you’re linking to, just like here) (incidentally, this will embed an instagram photo or video and the video will play - yes!)
audio (currently soundcloud only, that will expand)
You can send private mail to another member (and mail you write does not vanish into the ether, it remains as part of the conversation chain when you click on it.  kinda clunky, but getting there!)
you can choose to receive messages from anyone, noone, or only your mutuals
You can blacklist content based on key-word
You can filter as well
You can block users (god bless the block button anywhere on the internet)
You can check notifications
you can instantly sort ‘replies’ from ‘likes & reblogs’
There are avatars (do they support animation yet? I’m not sure?)
there aren’t themes yet (give the poor coders time!), but you can change your PF’s color scheme to whatever you like
You can deactivate your account - make in vanish, but without deleting it. handy if you just wanna go away, but not lose all your content - and not have your content be visible while you’re gone
You can delete you account (of course)
You have three invites a week you can give away free!  Though PF needs the $5 life-long one-time registration fee to keep the lights on, this is a way to help someone who’d love to be a member, but hasn’t got the cash :)
If you want to join PF and cannot afford the one-time $5 fee (which is paying for server & bandwidth ), I am happy to give away my 3 invites a week to any friends on here - where ‘friend’ equals ‘nice people who’ve been nice on here!’  Just DM me, and I’ll give you one :)  Please pay them if you can afford to though!
Pillowfort is a great design for fandom, it’s not owned by some big corporate entity - it’s run by fans.  Remember what that feels like?  Dreamwidth?  AO3?  Like that.  Real humans, who will really respond to you.
I really really want to see Pillowfort become a successful platform - COME JOIN US!  WE’RE HAVING GREAT FUN AND MAKING REAL RELATIONSHIPS :)
PF members - feel free to chime in about any awesomeness I forgot to include!  [any haters, eff off]
Everyone keep in mind, Pillowfort is a brand new platform being created from scratch - updates roll out regularly (if they break anything, staff is all over it and its fixed quickly), requested features are being implemented all the time (and seldom break things - how weird), and Real Humans Such As Yourself are doing all of this, without whopping paychecks [any paychecks] and without being owned by some corporation.  (Incidentally, they could use your donation - whether one time or subscription, amount is your choice)
If ‘being nice to fellow fans because they are friends, not simply faceless content creators’ is an unfamiliar concept...please feel free to try it out when discussing PF on this post :D
.
ETA!!!
in her HUGELY THOROUGH pifo info post, @lavender-sprinkles  also pointed people toward ‘a completely interaction-free Google form” where you can find free invites!!
The PILLOWFORT INVITE KEY EXCHANGE PROJECT - ‘Itching to join Pillowfort, but can't swing the $5 fee? Fear not! All you have to do is fill out this form and we will connect you with a PiFo user who has a spare key meant just for you! Absolutely FREE! Then just sit back and patiently wait for it to arrive.‘
DUDE. IT COULD NOT BE EASIER TO GET A FREE ACCOUNT - AWESOME!

Most of the time on here when I talk about racism it’s about the kind done by the creators of a given piece of media (author, writing team, marketing department, etc) but today I’m gonna talk about racism done by fans.
Specifically erasure and sidelining/downgrading characters of color in ensembles. The three examples I have are from the sort of tumblr-specific multi-fan reblog works. Gonna put this all behind a cut, with links & descriptions.
Example 1 [https://mzminola.tumblr.com/post/161130456813/sperari-foundloveinbudapest-obsessiforge]
The OP made a four-panel comic of Sam Wilson, Natasha Romanoff, Bucky Barnes, and Steve Rogers sitting at a table to play D&D, with a caption stating they headcanon Guardians of the Galaxy as the Avenger’s D&D campaign that Bucky DM’s. Sam & Natasha are only visible in the final panel, but they are very clearly there, and no other Avengers are.
Other people reblogged this with their own match-ups of which Avenger is playing which Guardian, and this particular reblog someone has done Natasha=Gamora, Tony=Quill, Thor=Drax, Bruce=Groot.
Completely ignoring that the comic to kick this off features Sam Wilson, not those three other guys. When I first reblogged this, I tried to find commentators that included Sam, but it was a needle-in-a-haystack situation and I gave up.
Example 2 [https://mzminola.tumblr.com/post/186125797093/if-were-gonna-keep-rebooting-things-in-2019-then]
The OP suggest a Leverage reboot for 2019, lists a few ideas, and ends with “Sophie becomes president”. The first commentator points out that Sophie can’t, because she’s not an American citizen, and suggests Hardison instead, including the idea that with the voting machines un-hacked, Hardison wins in a truly fair election.
The third commentator says we can’t do that because of Hardison’s age, referencing a single episode where a character who is not Hardison himself says he’s 24. A fourth commentator suggests Parker or Maggie instead.
My objection here might seem a little nitpicky; if we rule out Sophie because of her nationality, why not Hardison due to his age? If we tweak canon to make Hardison old enough (since this is a reboot suggestion), or change what year the election is, why not tweak it to make Sophie American?
Well, that’s the thing: a lot of fandom racism of this type (erasure, sidelining) is easy to ‘justify’ or downplay in the particular instance, but is still part of an overall pattern. Much like how slash fandom still has a massive problem with sidelining women characters; sure a single fic might have decent reasons, but when it happens over and over and over again?
This Leverage thread had someone suggest the only black main character in the show become President of the United States in a fair election, and the response by some other fan was to immediately say that couldn’t happen because of one contestable trivia point.
Example 3 [https://mzminola.tumblr.com/post/189671198448/kaylapocalypse-lonepower-thrawn-thrawn]
OP suggests a Star Wars AU in which Rey is a hockey player and Finn is a figure skater. A+ concept, love it.
Then we get someone copying another reblogger’s tag of “Poe drives the zamboni” and someone else adds “poe “i just work here””.
And okay. Maintenance staff is fucking vital to everything, everywhere, but it’s still questionable to take a post about “what would these space action adventure characters do in an ice athletics AU” and assign the hotshot pilot a role that isn’t also athletics, you know? Its’s not like hockey and figure skating are the only ice athletics in the world, if you’re trying to give everyone a different niche.
~
So those are the examples I have on hand; first two are someone includes a character of color, other people ignore them or downgrade their role in favor of white characters. Third is someone playing with an AU (that gives a fun, positive role to a character of color, heck yeah figure skater Finn) and someone else brings up a character of color just to give them a less glamorous role than the originally mentioned characters.
So, what do we do with this?
Couple suggestions:
If you’re creating content with an ensemble, double check who you’re giving attention to, and if you notice yourself ignoring characters of color...include them! If you’re only including them with a bare nod, go back and include them more! If you’re giving them less interesting, glamorous, important, etc roles than the other characters, examine your own reasoning for a bit, to shake your assumptions up...and then go give them equally cool (or even cooler) stuff to do!
If you’re in a group participation setting like tumblr, don’t knock down what other people set up. Someone says “let’s have Character do Cool Thing!” and you know some canon factoids that get in the way of that...leave it be. Don’t jump in to say why it doesn’t work. I totally get the urge to correct people about canon, I really truly do, but this is not the moment to do it.
“What if I’m using the canon facts to suggest an alternative cool thing for the character to do?” Awesome, make a new post! So you know that “XYZ Canon Facts means Character cannot be Empress”? Maybe that’s worth including in your post, maybe it’s not, but either way making a new post of “Character could be Democratically Elected Prime Minister and Secret Princess!” is awesome! Now you’re contributing fun content without raining on anyone else’s parade, yay!
If you see someone else doing the “ignore or sideline” thing don’t reblog it with no comment. The examples I used in this post are all instances where I reblogged it and added my own commentary. Did I flat out go “hey you’re being racist”? No, I didn’t. I could have! I might in the future! What I did do:
I questioned where the hell Sam was and pointed out he was in the original comic, dismissed the age issue and re-asserted that Hardison should be president, and suggested an ice athletics role for Poe.
You know what I do even more often? I go back up the reblog chain. That’s one of the reasons why I have so few examples. It’s not always possible to go up the reblog chain; url changes, deletions, or the racism being embedded in the middle of a long reblog chain with unracist and cool stuff further down all mean that sometimes, I’m going to reblog a post that has these problems.
So I comment. I refuse to let the erasure and sidelining slide by.
Do you, hypothetical reader, have to do that?
I don’t know. I’m not you. But now you know about this pattern (if you didn’t before), and you know some responses to it, to make informed decisions.

Ace Discourse Masterpost (Rebloggable Cut Version)
Here is a master list of arguments in the ace discourse over the years against the notion that cishet ace/aro people are members of the LGBT community, because they are cis and straight. Furthermore why calling asexuality an oppression (while not denying the existence of prejudice against asexual people and the need for their own community) leads to very homophobic and transphobic understanding of what it means to be LGBT. I have been involved in “the discourse” for over five years, making arguments of my own and promoting others on this blog. But now it is time for me to move on and leave this masterpost as the culmination of this blog’s purpose.
Some of these posts are mine but for the most part this is the product of a lot of other people’s work: their words, their thoughts, their experiences and their research all compiled into one place to help people understand the ace discourse and to track its record of ahistory and blatant homophobia and transphobia. I have made sure to use links on my blog so they don’t get lost in any name changes or deletion, but I do not take any credit for their posts and content. So thank you to everyone who contributed to the discourse, and ultimately this post. I hope this will be great resource for discoursers young and old and help people form their own arguments and to help young LGBT people from falling into the trap of denying their sexuality because of the homophobic and transphobic rhetoric of the Ace Community.
So without further ado, The Ace Discourse Masterpost:
Why Asexuality is Not Oppressed
A comparison of asexuality to racism and why it does not meet the definition of systemic oppression
A Debunking of the study often cited as proof of Asexual Oppression and Acephobia
Another response to the oft cited study.
And denying oppression is not proof it exists
Oppression is systematic, not individual
Asexuality does not need to be oppressed to still be valid
Gatekeeping
The LGBT community was created to combat transphobia and homophobia
Gatekeeping doesn’t mean what you think it does
“The LGBT Community is meant to be inclusive!!”
Safe Spaces are meant to be exclusive
And thus excluding cishet aces protects LGBT people
On Oppression Olympics
If not LGBT, where do asexual people belong?
On the assumption that some LGBT people live happy homophobia free lives and should be called “not queer enough” too.
The emergence of REG, “ Reactionary Exclusionist Gatekeepers”
REG is just another version of using “it’s the same as ___” to gain legitimacy
The Queer Identity
The history of “queer” as a slur and why its not an umbrella term
Insisting “queer” is an umbrella term for abnormal/deviant people is classic homophobia
Queer is also often used to intentionally erase an individuals distinct identity and relation to oppression
Queer can never fully be reclaimed
On queer theory and the true history of the term
A is for Asexual
How AVEN started the A for Asexual, fully aware that it was also being used for allies. (Arguing the origin of A as Ally is pointless now, this post explains it all from the horse’s mouth)
Why trying to use MOGAI instead does not work.
Ableism and The DSM
A thorough argument on why hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in the DSM is not proof of oppression against asexuals, and is in fact a homophobic and ableist claim.
More on HSDD and the absurdity of claiming it targets asexual people
More on the history of the slur homosexuality and how it was used to medically torture gay people.
Autistic people are often assumed to be asexual (And are not meant to be ace representation)
A Complete Guide to How the Ace Community has lied about the Pathologization of Asexuality and Fearmongered Young Aces into thinking Anti-Ace Conversion Therapy is a Thing
Split Attraction Model (Asexuality is not Straight!)
Why the split attraction model is bad and people hate it.
It makes gross assumptions about non-asexual people who do not use the model, and conflates sexual attraction with sexual orientation
Sectioning personal thoughts on sex and using mogai labels are ultimately useless
The -sexual prefix has always meant gender not sex
Attraction cannot be so evenly split into Romantic or Sexual
“You must be cisgender, heteroromantic, and heterosexual to be Straight!”
Also “Homoromantic” is a terrible word
The History of the word Straight
Allosexual & Allosexual Privilege
Why Allosexual is a terrible term
The word makes sweeping assumptions about someone’s private sexual feelings for vast number of people. (tl;dr version)
The person who coined the term now opposes it’s use.
There is no such thing as sexual privilege.
SGA people have a relationship to sex based on our oppression that straight asexual people cannot understand or experience
The failure of liberal analysis of power structures
Refuting the idea that LGBT people don’t face homophobia or transphobia even in more liberal places.
A cringe-worthy comic that assumes “allosexual” people easily know their sexual orientation because sex
Can you all just stop with this shit, really?
Monosexism, allosexuality’s evil cousin, has many of the same issues.
TL;DR Another brief argument against Allosexual
Corrective Rape
The term “corrective rape” has been appropriated from a very specific homophobic hate crime in South Africa to mean any kind of rape that punishes the victim.
The UN updated it’s terminology guidelines to refer to it as homophobic rape to “note the deep-seated homophobia that motivates the hate crime”
Often used as a gotcha argument than concern for rape victims.
Supporting Rape Culture and Pedophilia
Discourse about ace people having sex is often thinly veiled rape culture
Claiming rape is worse for asexual people again, and again, and again, and again, and again
Is the discourse becoming too “inclusive” of pedophiles?
The troubling trend of protecting pedophiles and calling out victims
On Sex In General
How capitalism affects our perceptions of sexual culture
Asexuality is about sex in a way being Gay/Bi is not (And how it relates to explaining sex and sexuality to children)
Aces need to talk about sex too!
Erasure and Visibility
Visibility directly contributes to the violence LGBT people face
Visibility is not always positive and is often stereotyped and not good for LGBT people
Accepted versus Respected
“At least you have representation!”
A History of Ahistory
Arguments that the Spinster Movement was about asexuality cherry picks history
Another post about the Spinster Movement
Assuming Boston Marriages were about asexuality
Asexuality is based on western/eurocentric ideas of sexuality
New terminology lacks historical context of “homosexual”
And is often appropriating language from LGBT people
Even recent history gets rewritten
The Ace Community really needs to just stop.
Pushing LGBT People Back into the Closet
Homophobia wants gay people to be asexual
Ace discourse has promoted sexually regressive and classic homophobic ideas about sex that has prevented LGB people from fully admitting to themselves their same-gender attraction. (Proof)
Ace discourse against same-gender PDA in LGBT safe spaces is classic homophobia
As well as dangerous to our sexual safety!
PDA is not applied to straight and gay people equally
AIDS/HIV and Serophobia in the Ace Community
“We’re Here, We’re Queer” - was created in response to the AIDS Crisis   (Source)
Joking about the crisis to complain about gatekeeping
Resenting AIDS activism so much as to imply no young gay man today could possibly be affected by the AIDS crisis
Assuming no one alive during the crisis is speaking now about seraphobia (The AIDS Crisis is Not Over!)
Imagining sexually transmitted plagues that won’t affect asexuals
“Ok but that was like 40 years ago and homosexuality is now widely accepted”
Homophobia in the Ace Community
Will comment on topics of violent homophobia with “at least they know you exist” so they can kill us
Ace tumblr or conservative republican?
Claiming people who hate aces are “Sexually Deviant”
Masterpost of some really terrible homophobic shit
“Gay people are obsessed with sex!” Edition of Ace Homophobia
This entire tag of fucked up shit ace people have said
Please feel free to reblog and add any arguments I may have missed.
