4th Quarter reading (October through December)
October: Turtles All the Way Down by John Green - I really enjoyed this book. I liked the main character and her OCD was believable. Beguiled by Cyla Panin. This book didn't know what it wanted to be and it showed. Disappointing. Huntress by Malina Lo. I have no recollection for reading Ash, although I remember that I liked it, so I couldn't tell you how this was a prequel, but it was a good book. Hopefully I'll remember it in a few years. The Fox by Malinda Lo. Attached to Huntress. Should have just been deleted. A Darkness At The Door by Intisar Khanani. I really liked this series (which really was one book followed by a duology), well developed world and characters. Karamo: My Story of Embracing Purpose, Healing, and Hope by Karamo Brown. My favorite of the Fab Five. I found this to be meh. (The fact that there was entire chapters devoted to his fiance who he broke up with about 6 months after this was published was a little *wince* Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree. A truly fun, cozy fantasy book. Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk. A book club book. Dragged a bit, but certainly made me think about nature and borders. The Nobleman's Guide to Scandal and Shipwrecks by Mackenzie Lee. A good conclusion to the trilogy (the second book was the best). Fic: Why Fanfiction Is Taking Over the World by Anne Jamison. Started reading this in 2014 and never finished. It was already dated. I would have really liked taking a college class from her. Corinne by Rebecca Morrow. I read this because there was a rumor that it was written by Stephenie Meyer. I don't think it was (but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Rainbow Rowell). It was so terribly cheesy and entirely relatable. The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting by K.J. Charles. I... did not realize when I first picked this book up that it was just a very smutty romance novel. I wanted more plot than what I was given. (Books need AO3 tags and ratings!) The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun. Truly charming.
November: Almost Like Being in Love by Steve Kluger. I think @constantcompanion told me that it was one of her favorites. Don't read this one as an ebook, the letters do not translate. The ending was unconventional. Tanqueray by Stephanie Johnson. The Humans of New York photo essay was better. The Gentleman’s Guide to Getting Lucky by Mackenzie Lee. Another one that I started reading years ago after reading Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue. It was just meh. Dracula Daily by Bram Stoker. I had never read Dracula. Tumblr made it a much more enjoyable experience than the novel itself. The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkien (audiobook read by Andy Serkis). Andy Serkis's voice is so good (except as Galadriel) and really made this an immersive experience. The Secret Life of Albert Entwistle by Matt Cain. Truly delightful about an older man facing retiring and reexamining his life in the closet. The cross-generational friendship were the best. Demon in the Wood by Leigh Bardago. The drawings were beautiful, the story was short. Stardust by Neil Gaiman. Needed to be longer. The Guncle by Steven Rowley. I loved this book - there are not enough books dedicated to childless adults and their relationships with the niblings. The Two Towers by JRR Tolkien (read aloud by Andy Serkis). Long car trip to Utah meant plenty of time for listening to books. Eowyn's voice wasn't much better than Galadriel's, but the rest was excellent. Scattered Showers by Rainbow Rowell. Too many republished stories. 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff. Delightful correspondence. I can see why it's beloved. Paris Daillencourt Is About to Crumble by Alexis Hall. This book suffered because it was the third or fourth book that I read with a anxious/OCD protagonist and it's just becoming the trope of the month.
December: Brambles by Intisar Khanani. The prequel to Thorn. A nice introduction but you really didn't need it. Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx. Have never seen the movie. Didn't really like the characters. Writing was lovely, but I don't know that that Wyoming really ever existed. A Marvellous Light by Freye Marske. A reread. Just as delightful as the first time. A Restless Truth by Freye Marske. Not quite as good as AML and the romance wasn't as engaging. I'm excited for the concluding book though. Illuminations by T. Kingfisher. I just love every word she writes. Call Us What We Carry by Amanda Gorman. Some truly excellent poetry in this collection. I'm going to buy the book. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens as part of a daily email. Not as much tumblr discussion. The Lightning Thief by Percy Jackson. My nephew's favorite books right now and I realized I've never read. A fun romp. Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore. Another book that I was cleaning out from my "started reading years ago but never finished." Enjoyable, but I don't really enjoy potty humor so I think I was the wrong audience.
Currently reading: Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present by Harriet Washington. It's a great book but it's so heavy that I can only read a chapter at a time. The White Allies Handbook: 4 Weeks to Join the Racial Justice Fight for Black Women by Lecia Michelle. I was really hoping for a Antiracism 202 kind of book and this isn't quite that. I might finish this one by tonight.
I gave up on Great Expectations, Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, and Moby Dick as emails since nobody else on tumblr seems to be reading those.

Lee looked up, checking both the rear-view and side mirror with a serious and focused expression.
“You got an idea who could be following us and why?” he asked, still glancing back and forth between rear-view mirror and street.
They looked over at him, “Well, I mean... it could be random people trying to mess with strangers, or rob them, or... I don’t know if it even makes sense but I guess it could be those assholes from the rest stop? Can’t say for sure though.”
“I was thinking the same thing,” he said with a groan.
Cylas frowned, “You think they’re gonna try anything? Ram the car or try to run us off the road?”
“I don’t know, not sure how far they’d go. They did seem kinda laid back, but...” he shrugged, “That might’ve just been them being unsure how to act, or thinking their friend would be able to handle it.”
“Either way, I hope they grow bored and fuck off soon, don’t need some overly confident and self-assured creeps knowing where I live,” she scoffed, “Especially cause there most likely wouldn’t be much I could do except try and avoid or ignore them.”
“I could let you out early but there’s no guarantee they’ll keep following the car,” he said, frowning while still keeping an eye on the other car, “Serendipity isn’t that big, is it?”
They shook their head, “Nope. If they figure out I live there, it most likely won’t take them long to somehow find me. Even if they don’t find my exact address, it’s difficult to avoid someone around there, especially if that someone is intent on meeting you.”
Cylas and Lee sat in silence for a while, getting closer and closer to the town, before the other car suddenly sped up and drove past them, only to then slam on the brakes and stop in a position that was partly blocking both lanes.
“Ah, fucking hell. Can’t a girl catch a break?” she groaned, letting her head fall back against the headrest with a thud. As predicted, the four men from the gas station got out of the car, slamming the doors with much more force than needed, and her fingers twitched on her thighs. Lee had tensed up as well, watching the men approach.
“What now?” they said, “I don’t exactly like the thought of being trapped in here with those fuckers blocking the door.”
Lee didn’t take his eyes of the men and replied, “I should probably just try to turn and drive back into the other direction. Not worth getting into a fight, especially not four on one.”
“Two,” they corrected before they had time to think about it, “There’s two of us.”
He took a deep breath, slowly loosening his grasp of the steering wheel, “You sure about this?”
They chuckled, “I can’t stand people like them, fucking worthless piles of organic waste. Plus, it’s self-defence, isn’t it?”
“I guess,” he replied, finally glancing over at them, “Where’s your limit?”
She shrugged, “You wanna beat their heads to pulp, be my guest. Just try not to get yourself killed.”
Even though a part of him was trying to tell him that this was a bad idea and way too risky, something about the tone of Cylas’ voice convinced him that they were serious, and the look in their eyes showed pure and honest anger.
“Alright then. You too.”
Tumblr media
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw him reach for the flashlight, and then she was out of the car, focus zeroing in on the men approaching her side of the car. One of them was the guy who’d harassed her, his nose already bruising, and they did slow down a little when they saw her get out. She figured that they’d probably expected her to run, or scream, or something – instead she stood still, a smile spreading over her face, and slightly tilted her head. Watching. Waiting.
But then the moment was over and they closed in on her; her former harasser holding a crowbar, the other one what seemed to be a wrench. Not even a screwdriver. People really didn’t seem to get the effectiveness and fun of stabbing someone, just ramming an object into a person’s body and-
Still, she waited, only just so managing to avoid bouncing on her feet.
“Gentlemen,” she said softly, inclining her head toward them. This made the second guy falter again, but bruised-and-possibly-broken-nose dude didn’t hesitate to come straight to her and raise his hand, as if trying to let her see exactly what he planned to do.
However, she dodged out of the way just in the last second, making him stumble. She grinned.
Simultaneously, a groan could be heard from the other side, and she was sure it hadn’t been Lee. Guy number two looked over, but before he could make any move to leave, Cylas had caught up to him punched him in the stomach hard enough to make him fall to his knees. It was funny how the guys that acted so tough always folded easily.
Broken-nose man had apparently caught himself and was, once again, nearing her from behind.
“Come on now mate, this is getting old,” she said, spinning around just in time to sink her blade right into his armpit. The man let out a pretty unmanly scream and dropped the crowbar, instinctively reaching for the wound.
She giggled, “Really shouldn’t give an opponent such an opening, lifting your arm like that, almost asking to have that used against you.”
The man looked at her, bared teeth, eyes burning with pain and hatred. His buddy seemed to have recovered as well, although still wheezing, and she was pretty sure what the man before her would do next. So, she stepped back, despite the action bringing her closer to the other guy. Unsurprisingly, gaze still locked onto her and completely oblivious to anything else, Mr Broken-Nose charged at her – and she side-stepped, causing him to ram straight into his buddy.
“Y’all gotta stop being so predictable for real,” she said in an unsettlingly cheerful voice, before gazing through the car's windows and trying to catch view of Lee. As far as she could tell, he was standing and alright, with only one other man visible and seemingly injured; he wasn’t standing completely straight at least and was holding his side.
She probably should quit messing around as well.
While the two guys on her side were still trying to detangle themselves from each other and get up, cursing and swearing at each other the whole time, Cylas bend down to pick up the crowbar. Had the men looked over, they had gotten the view they had harassed her over earlier. She snorted and turned back around to them, being the one closing in on the harasser this time around. He had managed to get up into a kneeling position, and she decided that that was far enough. Her eyes met the one's of his friend, winking at him, before letting the crowbar collide with the other man’s skull, a satisfying crunching sound rewarding her effort.
Once again, he fell forward, but Cylas caught his shoulder and instead pushed him to the side with ease. His friend, now realising the shitty position he was in, started to crawl back while also trying to push himself up, and she didn’t follow him, instead deciding to step on his knee. Hard. The men screamed, even louder than his friend, and somewhere in the back of her mind she realised that the ‘thwacking’ sound she had heard from Lee’s side had stopped.
However, she had a plan and she’d follow through with it. The man was still wailing, but she didn’t let that distract her; she decisively grabbed his ankle and pulled him back towards his broken-nosed buddy, who was still on the floor, just groaning and looking around with an unfocused gaze. The mean screamed again, calling out for help, apologising and begging for her to let him go. If he was trying to fight back, she didn’t notice, and just unceremoniously dropped him next to the other one, before rolling him onto his stomach and partially pulling him up by the back of his neck. The men were facing each other now, bruised-nose dude trying to keep his eyes on her and his friend, while the man she was holding was sniffling.
She smiled, still, and stepped a little closer, opting to hold the man against her chest instead.
“You wanted something to look at, yeah? Wanted me to show you something?” she asked, eyes locked with the one’s of the man on the floor, who only groaned in response. Not like she’d expected an answer, “I’ll show you something, alright.”
Apparently having grown somewhat used to the pain, or somehow strengthened by adrenaline, the guy that was pressed to her torso started to struggle, and she rolled her eyes, “Okay, if you’re in such a hurry I’ll just get it over with.”
Before he could make another sound, she had pulled her knife again and slowly dragged it across his throat, making sure the blood gushing from the cut was dripping all over her former harasser’s head and chest. He seemingly tried to turn his face away, but his movements were very uncoordinated and sluggish, so he still ended up swallowing quite a lot of it, making him gag and choke.
“Enjoying the view?” she said, grinning, before dropping the other guy’s body right on top of him, “Having fun yet?”
The man just coughed and sputtered, and she got distracted by the feeling of eyes on her. She looked up to see Lee watching her, his hands, lower arms, and shirt covered in blood, along with some splatters in his face. He let his eyes wander over the scene before him, before meeting her gaze, “Well, are you having fun?”
“Um, well,” she began, awkwardly shifting her weight and taking a step back, as if she could hide her involvement in the situation, “Yeah, actually. A good way to get out some frustration. What about you?”
He stared at her for a moment, piercing gaze seemingly analysing her, before he chuckled, “I can’t argue with that. You done there, or...?”
“Just about, yeah. Probably shouldn’t stick around for too long,” she said, crouching down to slit the last man’s throat as well, “All done. You wanna... move the bodies? I got some cleaning stuff and change of clothes in my backpack, but we really should hurry up.”
He nodded, “Yeah, I’ve got some bleach, disinfectant and all that as well, did you touch any of their weapons?”
“The crowbar,” she said, once again grabbing one of the bodies by the ankle, “Wanna just drag them a bit into the forest or the trunk of their car? If anyone comes by, they’ll see the bloodstains anyway.”
“Let’s do the trunk, faster that way, and you’re right, probably doesn’t really matter.”
“Alright then,“ she agreed, heading for the men’s car.
Tumblr media
Clean-up was certainly the most annoying part of these situations, but important anyway. Cleaning the weapons and their skin was simple enough, just as getting changed, but Cylas had also left some bloody footprints that they could only attempt to at least roughly remove with water, bleach, and a sponge. They also moved the men’s car to the side of the road, at this time unwilling to waste any more time by taking the long way around.
Back in the car, Cylas sighed, “This might have been a very dumb thing to do.”
“Yep,” Lee agreed without hesitating, “But freeing anyway. Otherwise, I would’ve been walking around with that rage simmering under my skin for the next couple... days. Weeks. Whatever.”
“Same,” they snorted, “I’ll just hope that they made sure no one saw them leave or come after us. Ultimately, police shouldn’t be able to prove what way we went after leaving.”
He nodded, “Yeah, guess we can only wait and see now.”
“I can’t wait to take a shower,” they groaned, before perking up a little, “Oh, I just remembered – do you like chocolate? I got a small box of Celebrations at the gas station and was gonna offer to share, but then these guys... happened.”
“I mean, can’t really say no to chocolate, can I?”
“Any preferences?” she asked, grabbing the plastic bag and trying to undo the messy knot she had made earlier, before giving up and just tearing it.
Lee shrugged, “Dunno. I like Snickers, I guess? But anything will do.”
“Good choice,” she replied, smiling at him, “Let me find one for you.”
The rest of the drive was spent in mostly silence, save for an occasional chocolate bar request. Cylas and Lee agreed that he’d just drop her off by her cabin, he certainly had more personal knowledge about her now than an address, and they decided to exchange phone numbers. Just in case something came up, or so she could maybe share some info she got from Tony.
“Okay, good night then, drive safely and thanks for bringing me home,” she said before closing the door. Lee smiled and waved, and then drove off.
Cylas yawned, and made her way inside, where she was promptly greeted by her cats. While walking towards the bathroom, she pulled out her phone and saw a few messages by Darrell, asking if she was okay.
Well, shit. They hadn’t meant to worry him, but over all the stress and trouble she had completely forgotten to check her phone. And she had been kind of busy as well.
“Hey Dee, sorry I’m only responding now. Got a ride with a nice dude, but had to stop at a gas station basically right before Serendipity, but home now. And more than ready to collapse into bed and pass out. Talk to you later,” she wrote and was just about to hit ‘Send’ when she had another thought, “But I swear on everything, these were some of the longest ten minutes in my life so far.”

It wasn’t long before they pulled up to the gas station, and as she was reaching for the door handle, she looked over at Lee, “Anything I can get you?”
He shook his head, “No, thanks, I’m good.”
She shrugged, “Alright then. Be right back.”
Even though she didn’t stop at this particular stop often, one time she’d been there the owner’s son had pulled up with car troubles, so she’d offered to check it out. Already expecting to be turned down and possibly even mocked, she was surprised when the owner agreed, even though his son seemed wary. It turned out to be only a minor issue she’d been able to fix on the spot, and to repay her – despite her insisting that he didn’t need to – he had given her only half the price for gas and snacks she’d gotten that day.
The sun had set completely at this point, so the station and rest area were mostly just illuminated by the cold, white light emanating from a few lamps scattered between the parking spaces and fluorescent tubes at the building. The contrast between shadow and light was sharp, and the darkness beyond the illuminated areas seemed impenetrable. The thought of working a whole night out here, all alone, seemed less than desirable.
“Well, well, well, if it isn’t young Cylas,” a gruff but friendly voice pulled them from their thoughts and they looked up at the middle-aged man just stepping out of the station. The sleeves of his faded red flannel were rolled halfway up his lower arms and atop his head rested an unfamiliar cowboy hat.
They raised their brows, “Hey Tony. That one new?”
“Why, jealous?” he shot back, a playful smile on his face.
“Nah, not my colour. Wouldn’t go with my hair,” she replied, returning his smile, “Thought you didn’t work nights?”
“I’m actually on my way out, just helped Shelly with some boxes in the back. Guy from the day shift left everything a mess and the poor girl couldn’t move the heavy stuff herself.”
“So, you came in just to help out?” she asked, though she knew the answer, “You fire the guy yet?”
He clenched his jaw and his expression grew more serious, “Can’t really afford to, people aren’t exactly fighting each other to get a job here. And you are already taken.”
“I guess so,” they said, “Anyway, I don’t wanna keep you any longer. Say ‘Hi’ to the wife and kids from me.”
“Will do,” he replied before continuing to walk to his car, while Cylas entered the gas station. The grey tile floor was reflecting the light and quiet pop music played. Behind the counter stood a timid-looking young woman, hair hiding her face from view. She didn’t even look up, just kept her gaze fixed onto the counter. Cylas immediately felt bad for her and prayed to whatever god would listen that the night would be calm for the woman.
With a sigh, they turned away and grabbed a bottle of cola and water, before looking around the snack shelf for a moment, searching if anything would strike their fancy. To her surprise, her eyes fell onto a small box of Celebrations. Way overpriced, as was to be expected from a gas station, but... it was a mix of different candy bars and therefore had a higher chance to include something Lee could like, plus she could just offer to share with him. It didn’t have the feeling of an enforced gift or possibly unwanted sign of gratitude. And she had an excuse to buy some chocolate.
Just as she was paying, the sound of obnoxiously loud music and another car pulling up disturbed the quiet, and she could see the woman flinch away from the noise. It seemed like their prayers had fallen on deaf ears. They wondered if Lee would mind staying around for a while, just until those guys left, but then shook their head. If anything, they would wait alone, not force some random stranger to get involved as well.
She grabbed the bag with the snacks and left, albeit reluctantly. Four young men got out of the car, laughing and shoving each other, while their music blared across the rest stop. When she looked towards Lee, she was surprised to find him fixated on the men as well. Not because she didn’t expect their presence to draw attention, but due to how focused he seemed, keeping an eye on every move they made. The group, except for the driver who was pumping gas, made their way towards the gas station and Cylas cringed internally when she realised, she’d now have to walk past them. She just hoped they wouldn’t try anything; the day had been going so well and she didn’t want to ruin that now.
Tumblr media
And everything did seem to be going smoothly, she kept to right and tried to take the shortest possible route to the car while also staying out of the men's way, they passed each other with no interactions whatsoever – and then the small plastic bag ripped. She cursed under her breath and took a deep breath, before crouching down to pick her things up, feeling the men’s stares burning right through her.
“Hey there, beautiful, not gonna bend over to give us something to look at?” one of the men called and she rolled her eyes, fighting the urge to comment. They’d only make fun of her.
“Yeah, bet that ass is nice to look at, looks good already from this angle,” another once agreed.
She wanted to scream. Or puke. Or punch something. Instead, she tried to focus on somehow tying the torn bag together because she really didn’t want to have her arms full around these guys. And then she felt one of them approach her from behind, seemingly trying to move quietly – completely oblivious to the fact that she was well aware of his presence and somehow missing Lee basically staring daggers at him as well.
With an amount of self-restraint she wasn’t aware she had left, she stood up and was just about to continue walking, when she felt the man behind her move. Her free hand had grabbed hold of his wrist before he had a chance to get anywhere close to her, or her butt.
“Do not fucking touch me,” she hissed through gritted teeth, staring at him with barely concealed anger.
The man played dumb, “Dunno what you're talking about, honey. No reason to get all bitchy over nothing.”
His condescending tone and smug voice told her enough, however, but she also knew that a confrontation would lead nowhere. These kinds of guys didn’t take her seriously, and she didn’t want Lee to get into trouble either. So, even though she really wanted to break the man’s arm, she just pushed his arm away and backed off. She’d managed a few steps at most before he came after her, again, and she turned to confront him before he could make any move.
“What the fuck do you want?”
He chuckled, “Come on girly, no need to be such a prude. Just wanna get a feel, a quick squeeze, that’s all. Can’t keep all the goods to yourself, that’s not fair.”
Before she had the chance to even think of a response, a loud smack sounded, and the man before her jumped in surprise, before turning to face someone behind him, only to feel Lee’s fist connect with his face, hard enough to send the man to the floor.
“What the fuck dude?” called the man, blood gushing from his nose, and his expression somewhere between shock and anger.
Lee glared at him and managed to somehow say in a strained voice, “Don't feel so great, does it!? Touch ‘em again, and I'll make you eat your hand!”
Cylas couldn’t help herself. Despite the seriousness of the situation, the look of complete and utter confusion on the man’s face, plus his friends also just standing by the station’s door and gawking, caused her to break out into laughter. Lee looked over at her in surprise, the burning anger and hatred in his eyes lessening for a moment, before the man spoke up again.
“Seriously? You losing your shit just cause of this bitch? She your girlfriend or something? With the hair and style, she’d probably a druggy too, really not worth the trou-”
This time it was Cylas who kept him from finishing his sentence, and cutting his attempt to get up short by delivering a kick to his shoulder. The man lost his balance and fell straight back on his ass.
Lee chuckled, before glancing up and tensing once again. Cylas followed his gaze and saw that the rest of the group had apparently finally decided to help their friend, including the one who’d been pumping gas. Past the men’s shoulders, she caught the gas station attendant locking the doors, phone between ear and shoulder.
“Come on, we should leave,” she said, still a hint of anger in her voice, but also knowing that this was a fight now worth fighting, “Don’t bother, they’re just scum and don’t deserve our time or energy. Plus, I think the clerk called the police or something.”
The second sentence was what seemed to really get through to Lee, and he stepped back, visibly reluctant, before motioning for her to go first. She didn’t fight him on it, at this point she just wanted to get out of here.
Tumblr media
As soon as they were back on the road and had put some distance between themselves and the rest stop, Cylas breathed a sigh of relief. Somehow, they had managed to get out of that situation without any serious injuries.
But when they glanced over at Lee, they realised that his jaw was still clenched hard enough it must’ve been painful, and he was squeezing the steering wheel so hard his knuckles were white. Well, on his left hand at least, his right was bleeding and bruising already. With a punch like that, he’d be lucky if he didn’t break something.
“Hey,” they said gently, not wanting to accidentally provoke him, “How are you holding up? You got quite upset back there.”
He scoffed, “Fucking piece of shit deserved it. I should’ve done more but with all his buddies there and possibly police... I would’ve laughed to beat his face to fucking pulp, all of ‘em, now they’ll just go off harassing others and being disrespectful pigs, don’t deserve to breathe the same air as we do-”
He paused his rant at this, taking a deep breath himself, “Sorry, I shouldn’t be saying all this shit. I’m not gonna hurt you, but understand if you’d prefer to get out now.”
“Nah, you’re right,” she said with a half scoff, half chuckle, “I just hope the girl working there is safe and that those fuckers left. She looked scared when it was just me in there, I wouldn’t be surprised if she quit before her next shift.”
Lee briefly glanced over at her, “You think we’ll get into trouble? With the cops, I mean? That place probably got CCTV and stuff.”
Cylas shrugged, “I doubt those guys will do anything, nothing in the station got damaged, so I don’t think they could sue us for anything, but I’ll probably hit Tony up anyway.”
“Tony?”
“Yeah, the owner,” she explained, “But I’m sure the biggest trouble for you will be your hand.”
He lifted his right hand from the steering wheel and stretched out his fingers before clenching it again, grimacing slightly. “I think it’ll be fine, I can move everything and it doesn’t feel like anything’s broken.”
“You got experience with that kinda stuff?” they asked, brows furrowed. Lee just shrugged.
It was at this point that Cylas noticed some movement in the side mirror, lights reflecting off of something behind them. “Call me paranoid but... is there someone following us, just out of range of the rear headlights?”

thought I had last night but was too tired to write down:
ways the murder ocs (usually) kill
Lee: anger bean, kills mostly driven by rightous anger and/or to protect, is therefore violent and brutal
Clay: gives victims time to think about their actions and might do some mind games, murders are usually meant to punish, if he kills them personally, more on the "efficient" side of things
Griff: all about efficiency and getting things done, not many games because he's a wimp and can't handle himself in a fight, victims picked randomly and on a whim
Darrell: also efficient I believe? but there is the element of punishment and justice so. we've seen him do some kind of mind games with the "worse" of his victims while quickly disposing of the other one. plus, leaving the guy to be eaten alive
Skulk: kind of brutal but also just wants to get it over with and avoid fights (?)
Cylas: very rare uncontrolled outbursts, normally well restrained due to therapy and medication, but still always has some rage boiling right under their skin, in order to avoid lashing out due to their emotions becoming too much, they've settled on... "exerting justice", mostly methodical and brutal, has sadistic tendencies, can be swift and efficient if necessary, "there are times and places for everything"
please feel free to correct me or add more characters, I only put the ones I got an approximate idea for, so there are a few missing
Lee belongs to @kalid-raven
Clay and Griffin belong to @rottent33th
Darrell belongs to @bluecoolr
Skulk belongs to @probably-a-plant-thing and I'm really not sure, basing this on one post I've seen. also if you wanna share anything on like the Holt boys or other OCs I am 👀👀👀
tagging @immortal-velociraptor in case you wanna share anything, I wanted to add Sully but then wasn't sure about his methods
@myers-meadow just to read, or if you wanna add one of your AU characters please do
also looking at @solmints-messyocdiary because. Odile mah bebi. and Iris. and Patron my beloved. and... Nutcracker and Dogface? is "Alice" a slasher? anyway

Cylas’ stay in Ambrose had certainly been an... experience. Just stumbling into a town filled with killers, their partners, and wax-encased corpses didn’t exactly happen every day, and finding out that Darrell had been responsible for those boys going missing had been unexpected as well. Though she wasn’t completely surprised, it explained the somewhat strange vibes he had given off at their first meeting. The fact that he now knew that she was capable of killing someone – and quite brutally at that – was another thing she wasn’t completely sure how to feel about, but she was glad he hadn’t actually seen it happen. His face when he saw all the blood on her clothes had been enough.
However, despite everyone’s attitudes seemingly becoming more relaxed, they still had felt out of place. They only knew Darrell, who was treated like family by everyone, and Red seemed to easily fit in as well. Maybe this amount of new people was too much, or it was the fact that she hadn’t been invited, or maybe she was imagining things – but she did end up wanting to leave rather quickly. Yet, considering that the car they had arrived in was beyond fixing, Darrell and his boyfriend wanting to stay, and her not wanting to ask someone to drive her three hours, she decided to hitchhike.
Darrell was not happy with this decision, but the alternatives were majorly more expensive, inconvenient, or both. Cylas’ couldn't burrow his bike either because they only knew how to drive a car, aside from being way too small. They did, however, agree to let Lester take them to the next bigger city to improve their chances of actually finding a ride – or, perhaps, consider another form of transportation.
The journey went quite smoothly for the most part – sure, there was the odd driver she refused, or people who were awkward, but nothing concerning happened. No assault, no attacks, most people were actually quite nice. There was lots of joking, talking about special interests, and sharing food – much more pleasant than the way to Ambrose had been. Still, with no one being able to take her all the way home because they were usually heading somewhere else, it did take much longer than a direct drive would have.
Probably not much longer than attempting public transport though, and it was definitely more relaxed. Plus, out here they could just stab someone if they became too much, in crowds and train stations it wasn’t that easy – at least not if one wanted to get away with it.
At this point, the sun had started setting, painting the sky in soft hues of orange, pink, and blue, while covering the world into an almost otherworldly golden light. It was quiet, except for the light wind rustling the leaves of the trees and bushes. It was peaceful, and had she not been relying on a car to pass and get her closer to home, she would’ve revelled in it. But as it was, if she didn’t meet someone soon her only options would be to keep going through the night or find somewhere to sleep. Neither option was too appealing.
She pulled out her phone to check how far it was to Serendipity and saw that Darrell had messaged her, asking how she was doing. A smile spread across her lips and she replied, “Still on my way, walking along the road. About half an hour from home if I was going by car ;D"
“So you’ll be out there in the dark?” came his immediate response.
“Maybe, maybe not. I’m sure that there’ll be at least one more person who can take me part of the way,” they wrote, glancing down the empty road. No need to worry him.
“Can’t you ask a friend? Half an hour isn’t that much.”
He had a point, and they had played with the thought as well. In fact, most of their friends would probably prefer to pick them up over them getting into strangers’ cars, but... it was an unnecessary waste of time and fuel. “Yeah, maybe.”
Just as she hit “Send”, she heard the sound of a car approaching and turned to look, signalling for the driver to stop. She looked through the passenger side window with a smile, quickly giving the driver a once-over and trying to determine if he looked trustworthy or not, and how much of a threat he could potentially be. As far as Cylas could tell, he was of fairly average height, had piercing grey eyes that seemed to be watching her very closely, and curly dark hair – she was sure that he basically had people throwing themselves at him.
“Where are you heading?” he said simply and straight to the point.
“Serendipity,” she stated, “It’s a rather small town, like 10 minutes from the mountain – Devil's Peak, might have heard of it?”
“Yeah, I know the area. Live and work around there myself,” he replied, “I could take you in the direction, possibly even into Serendipity, would only be a minor detour.”
Cylas did feel like there was something a little strange about the driver, like he was observing her too closely, being a little too tense in contrast to his relaxed voice. But she’d be fine. She had her knives, made it all this way with no issues, and with the sun setting she didn’t want to be too picky. “That would be amazing. I haven’t seen another car in ages and it’s getting late already.”
“Well then hop in,” the driver replied with a smile of his own.
She opened the door, shrugged off her backpack, and sat down, holding the bag on her lap. “You’re a life-saver.”
He chuckled. “Nah, just some guy who happened to be in the right place at the right time. And is going into the right direction.”
“Fair enough. Name’s Cylas, by the way,” she introduced herself, looking around the car’s interior.
“I’m Lee,” he said. “How come you’re out here all alone in the first place? If you don’t mind me asking.”
She shrugged. “Been travelling all day, trying to get home.  I was at some kind of team-building training-slash-seminar thing from work, and my ride there ended up having car troubles. Considering price of public transport plus the nerves it costs to deal with schedules and tickets and other travellers... I decided that I’d rather risk being murdered out on the road than stab someone on the subway.”
He raised a brow at that, but didn’t comment on it. “You certainly do have your priorities sorted. I’m glad my job doesn’t really do any trainings or whatnot, none that are obligatory as well. I actually didn’t know that that kind of stuff is a real thing.”
“Technically I’m still learning. Not a nurse yet, only a trainee. And from school we do have seminars,” they explained, “Fun times. Nothing like being stuck in some hostel, forced to share a room with people you hardly know, and spending the days listening to presentations or doing group work. Just like school.”
“Well, at least you got nice food,” Lee joked and she snorted.
“Yeah, Gordon Ramsay’s got nothing on hostel meals for sure.”
He grinned. “But yeah, working in the medical field, huh? That's a good line of work, though hard as hell, I hear.”
"That certainly is a way to put it,” they replied. “But guess we all pick our own poison, so can’t really complain. What about you?”
He went quiet for a moment and seemed to think. “I guess you could say I’m... an exotic dancer, in a way?”
She perked up in her seat. “Oh, dancing is so cool! I’m too uncoordinated, me dancing is a danger to my surroundings and myself, but my sister dances a lot. Girl’s got some muscle and stamina.”
“Certainly need that,” he commented, “People always seem to think of dancers as these soft fragile little things when in reality dancing needs a lot of strength, endurance, and training.”
“Exactly!” they said, “My sister even had a gym teacher who said that dancing wasn’t a sport, like, moving for – in training at least – sometimes even an hour isn’t a workout? Guess all the sweating and sore muscles and stuff mean nothing then. Not even mentioning the kinds of dances where you gotta pick your partner up. Easy-peasy lemon-squeezy, anyone could do that.”
He huffed a laugh. “Yeah, people like that have probably never tried to actually dance before.”
A beeping from the dashboard interrupted their conversation. “Ah, damn. I forgot to refuel earlier, does Serendipity have a gas station?”
They shook their head. “Nope. But there’s a really small rest area about ten minutes outside of it.”
“You mind if we stop there?”
“Of course not,” they replied with a laugh, “Don’t wanna risk either of us getting stranded, besides I could treat you to a delicious gas station snack or drink. Though, to be fair, that one isn’t even so bad, quality-wise. And I know that the owner actually cares and makes sure there’s no stuff past its best before date or anything.”
“Damn, I’d really been looking forward to some good ol’ food poisoning.”
“Sorry to disappoint,” Cylas said, grinning and feeling actually relaxed.

more random oc thoughts because why not
people I think would kick Cylas' ass into the next plane of existence: Clay, Darrell, Sully, Iris
people I think Cylas would have a balanced fight with that could go either way: The Patron, Skulk, Red, Lee, Odile?
people I think would have their ass handed to them by Cylas: Griffin (I'd apologise but I'm not sorry), The Nutcracker, Dogface
