RIP PATTI ASTOR “Patti Astor was queen of the downtown scene. She arrived in NYC in 1975 with stardom on her mind. In a short time, she was in demand in underground No Wave films and was one of the creative sparks that put the East Village on the cultural map. But Patti Astor was also sick of the "established" uptown art gallery scene, filled with "white walls, white wine, and white people." She knew many graffiti and hip-hop artists, and understood that like the punk artists playing downtown, the uptown rappers and painters used the city as a backbeat and canvas for their work. When Astor and partner Bill Stalling launched FUN Gallery in 1981, they moved #graffiti and hip-hop into a gallery space, bringing uptown sensibilities downtown. FUN Gallery's goal was to be a gallery for artists not buyers. It opened its doors to the people and kids who actually lived in the East Village. Patti Astor wanted art for everyone. FUN was the place artists could show without losing any of their street creds, and so the work of many of the cutting edge artists of the early 1980s--such as Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, #Dondi, #Futura2000, FAB 5 FREDDY, #LeeQuinones, Kenny Sharif, and Lady Pink--could be seen there. It also was known for its terrific parties. FUN Gallery was only around for four years, but in that short time, it was instrumental in opening up the art world to creativity wherever it's found.” (Source: Josephine Reed)

This exhibition beings together over 20 artists to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Charlie Ahearn ( @twincharlie )’s seminal film ‘Wild Style’🔥

In the words of the curator Carlo McCormick-

“While ‘Wild Style 40’ is in many ways a celebration of the graffiti art form that emerged out of this time and starred in the movie, it is centered within a broader circle of participation, including key figures from Colab, who were also forging new kinds of urban art, artists who were major supporters and benefactors of graffiti, the photographers who not only captured this movement but embodied it, and a few who have somehow carried these traditions with an authenticity and ingenuity that goes beyond what hip hop sounds like or graffiti looks like today.”

In 1979, graffiti artist #LeeQuinones & #Fab5Freddy were given a gallery opening in Rome by art dealer Claudio Bruni. For many outside of New York, it was their first encounter with their art form. Fab 5 Freddy's friendship with Debbie Harry influenced Blondie's single "Rapture", the video of which featured Jean-Michel #Basquiat, and offered many their 1st glimpse of a depiction of elements of #graffiti in #hiphopculture. #StyleWars depicted not only famous graffiti artists such as Skeme, Dondi, MinOne, and ZEPHYR, but also reinforced graffiti's role within New York's emerging hip-hop culture by incorporating famous early break-dancing groups such as #RockSteadyCrew into the film & featuring rap in the soundtrack.
