Day 2:

I decide to make 2 favorite moments for reasons I ‘ll say later.

My favorite loop 101 moment has to be Andy’s return and the 1 minute fight.

Up until that chapter we have basically zero clue as to Mr Undead’s whereabouts, outside of what I have to call a very misleading shot of him on a camel. Then suddenly, amidst a fight with this huge powerful UMA who gets really close to killing Leila, a random arm flew from nowhere and faceplanted Sick.

With this, Andy with his grin ask for Fuuko’s command and started the best one minute UMA jumping I’ve read.

Andy skillfully calls and commands every Negator available to restrain Sick and obliterating him with Dead Road, then greets Rip and Latla before flying facefirst into a meteor-comet duo is a great way to celebrate a year after him being gone from the story.

One part of this fight I never saw mentioned (likely because people made the connections already but whatever) is that the Andy clone contains so little of his actual Soul to the point where it can only last 60 seconds after landing and only uses physical attacks whereas the Andy on the Sun would probably take at most 3 seconds to skewer Sick’s soul.

It was also this fight that finally allows Fuuko to pursue a Master Rule into its hideout and making her declaration of war against Master Rules not just high talk. It is kinda hard to believe this moment is only 20 chapters ago, and 25 chapters ago we were just barely out of Chikara’s school arc.

Anyway, I had to make a category for the 101th loop, and some could guess why I’m doing this: The best moment of UU thus far for me is obviously, the final minute of Ragnarok.

Before this, everyone pretty much threw everything they had at Sun, with some seemingly push them back ( Chikara, Yusai, Creed-Mico-Phil tagteam, Backs, Andy and the martial arts gang) before getting countered somehow, and Juiz’s sacrifice buying 5 whole minutes, then Victor went berserk.

Within the last minute, the fight to push Sun back or beating them suddenly becomes one to just hold this godly force back long enough for Fuuko to escape as the loss is inevitable. Even the Union’s barrier crumble as Haruka succumbs to her wounds.

From Chikara sliding himself to the Union’s pitfall, Feng’s return after incapitacing Seal (I’m convinced he stealthily used a Soul attack that Seal had no way to defend against) and showing that he cares about what his disciple was fighting for, Kurusu praying and crying in a street corner, the gang fighting Ruin falling down to the Roundtable, to Victor firing his blood beam in conjunction with the staff.

Everyone did one last sacrificial move, be it basically punching God, holding the giant staff in place, blocking with an Untouchable sphere, and using a stasis sight one last time, all for the crying girl less than a meter from getting trampled before the timer ticks 0 and she goes with the uncaring Goddess to the next loop. Honestly I think unless there are actual insane moments in the final arc, this will be the best moment in UU for me.

The Bisexual - honestly if you love IHS this is very close spiritually. Leila is Iranian American woman living as a lesbian in the UK whose life blows up when she realises she's bi

Preppers - this is an Australian show that has a very similar insane celebrity cancellation plotline as IHS. follows an Aboriginal morning show host who gets cancelled after a public meltdown live on air so she runs away to live with a bunch of doomsday preppers.

Hitmen - Dark comedy from the UK about 2 best friends who are middle aged women and are also assassins but they're not very good at their job. One of the funniest shows to come out in the last few years.

Chewing Gum - created by Michaela Coel, UK series is a comedy about a working class religious Black woman in her 20s trying to find someone she can lose her virginity to. Everything cool about Fleabag was done in this show first.

Search Party - the messyness of these characters is boundless and absurd. Dramedy about a group of hapless 20 somethins who decide to go looking for their missing mutual friend.

Bad Sisters - Dark comedy series about 4 sisters trying to kill their 5th sister's rotten abusive husband. Especially good if you enjoy the family drama element of IHS

Selfie - my beloved. It's hard to find it streaming anywhere these days but if you can, watch it. Sitcom modern retelling of My Fair Lady starring Karen Gillan and John Cho.

We Are Lady Parts - masterpiece of a show about a bunch of Muslim women in their 20s/30s who are in a punk rock band. I don't really think they're messy to the extent Suzie is, but if you love the raw honesty and heart of IHS, walp has it in OODLES.

I'd also reccomend any other show Lucy Prebble has written/written for because they're all brilliant odessys on messy painfully human people ❤️

Vastum — Inward to Gethsemane (20 Buck Spin)

Vastum continues its campaign simultaneously to be the best sounding and most repulsive death metal act in America’s prodigious underground. Inward to Gethsemane is Vastum’s fifth LP, and it marks another stage in their refinement — which is a strange sort of word to use in relation to a band that likes to write tunes like “Orificial Purge” and “Gagging on a Gash.” But with each release, Vastum pulls its sound out of the muck a little more, paring away at its long roots in crust acts like Acephalix and Bruxers. Inward to Gethsemane is assertively a Metal ov Death record, wearing its suppurating, sadomasochistic raiment with grim, grand aggressivity.

Likely the most apprehensible shift in Vastum’s sound is Shelby Lermo’s more antic presence, providing demented guitar solos and generally making a perverse spectacle of himself. The time Lermo has put in with Ulthar, his other Bay-Area death metal project, seems to have had a palpable effect on his playing, which is suffused with a chaotic layer of Lovecraftian goo. The interplay between him and Leila Abdul-Rauf, Vastum’s other longtime guitarist (and vocal and creative complement to Daniel Butler), lights up this present collection with an appealingly turbulent intensity. And it all sounds…really good? The production (another sonically sharp record out of Greg Wilkinson’s Earhammer Studios) has just enough polish on it; every gurgle, blast and divebomb is rendered with lovingly punishing clarity.

Still, it’s a Vastum record, and the grostequerie will always outweigh any sheen or suggestion of aesthetically conventional luster. Thematically the band continues its exploration of the fleshy folds in which the erotic, the horrific and the abject greet one another with hilarity and fear. Check out these lyrics, from “Priapic Chasms”: “Piles of wank-refuse spew / Fill their inner cracks, asphyxiate / Fetid and foul fumes steam…” Or this, from the appropriately titled “Vomitous”: “Sprawling, can’t stop subjecting myself to your finger inside my eye / Feeling emetic, in distress, can’t stop vomiting / Puke your naked I in the agony garden.” Gross, for sure, but always with purpose. Vastum takes death metal’s sometimes glib celebrations of rotten, meaty pleasures and ecstatic violence seriously, as philosophical positions to be articulated, with ruthless thoroughness.

The album title announces that intent, in ways that exceed metal’s long-running practice of needling the Christians. Appropriate to the band’s conceptual rigor, Gethsemane’s biblical import is summoned with more than parodic impulse. A long night of the soul, suffering over the choice to annihilate the self, willfully, methodically, agonizingly? That’s right in Vastum’s wheelhouse. If the band can transgress some taboos and inflict some pain along the way, even better. Sound like fun? Your problems are my problems. We should likely seek help — but meanwhile, let’s spin this record a bunch.

Summary: Sandra hasn’t introduced the team to her new gf yet but decides to set up a cooking class at her new restaurant

 That Tuesday, Sandra texted the address for the restaurant to everyone, having kept it a secret until then. La Rosa Roja had been booked solid since the day it opened six months ago. This was the chef's third restaurant in Barcelona. And the other two were Michelin starred restaurants. She laughed reading the new flood of texts reacting to the restaurant they were going to.

 She got there early, wanting to meet with the chef ahead of everyone's arrival. She spotted her in the back of the restaurant, double checking everything for their cooking lesson. Sandra greeted the host, a young 20 year old girl who waved enthusiastically back to her.

 "Hola, Sandra," she said. "She's waiting for you in the back dining room." Sandra smiled at her and then walked towards the back.

 "I'm looking for Y/N Y/L/N," she told the chef. "I heard she's an incredible chef willing to put up with an entire team of football players tonight."

 You looked up, a huge smile splitting your face. "Well you've come to the right place." You put your notebook down and walked to Sandra. "Hi, mi amor."

 "Hi." She kissed you, curling her fingers into the front of your white coat. "How was your day?"

 "It just got significantly better." You pecked her lips again and then wiped your lipstick from her lip. "Don't want them to guess too early," you said with a giggle. "Who do you think is going to get it first?"

 "Capi sees everything. But she probably won't say anything. I'll bet Pere or Patri will be the first to say something."

 "We'll see soon." You smiled, stepping away from her. She reached out, smoothing out the wrinkles she'd put in your coat. Her teammates would be showing up in the next few minutes. "Want to go see the new toys I got in the kitchen before they get here?" Sandra nodded, lacing her fingers with yours, and followed you back into the kitchen.

 By the time the team started trickling in, Sandra was seated along the far end of the table, away from where you would be instructing the group. She was pretending to read through the ingredient list when they walked in even though you knew she had already read it. Twice. You looked down at your notebook, trying to hide the smirk. Just a minute ago, she had been blowing air kisses in your direction.

 Mapi, Leila, Patri, Jenni, and Alexia were the first to arrive. You'd seen pictures of them around Sandra's apartment and knew most of their names at this point. They all took the seats surrounding Sandra. You weren't at all surprised when Alexia was the first to approach you.

 "Hi, I'm Alexia."

 "Y/N. So nice to meet you." You shook her outstretched hand. "My girlfriend's a big fan."

 "But not you?" she asked, laughing.

 "I don't know much about football. She tries to teach me, though. She's mildly obsessed with it."

 "If she ever wants tickets to a game, I assume you have Sandra's number now? Just tell her I said it was okay."

 You gave her a polite smile. "I'll be sure to do that. Thank you." You bit the inside of your cheek to prevent the smile from turning into a smirk.

 "No, the thanks is all to you for agreeing to put up with all of us for tonight."

 You laughed again. "Rowdy bunch?"

 "We can be. I hope you had some strong coffee before this." She smiled before returning to her seat.

 "I saw her in a magazine a few months ago. She's cuter in person," Leila said, leaning closer to Alexia.

 "And she's gay. You owe me €20, Mapi. Leave her alone," Alexia warns, seeing Patri look over at Y/N. "She has a girlfriend." Patri slumped back in her seat, crossing her arms.

 "How'd you set this up?" Jenni asked Sandra, looking around. "This place is so cool."

 "I know someone. She helped me out."

 "Would that be the someone that's had you all smiley the last six months?" Patri asked.

 "Might be," she answered, the tips of her ears turning red.

 "Seriously, when do we get to meet this girl of yours?" Jenni asked. "You're like halfway to asking her to marry you at this point." Jenni was startled by the way Sandra immediately shushed her. "What? It's not like she's here to hear this conversation." She rubbed a hand on Sandra's shoulder.

 "You'll meet her soon. I'll bring her for dinner or something."

 You came up behind Sandra, dropping your hands on her shoulders. She jumped slightly under your touch before looking up and relaxing. "Is this everyone? Should we get started?" She looked around, counting.

 "Just missing Mel." Sandra pulled her phone out of her pocket to text her but saw a message waiting. She quickly read it, sending a reply. "Baby emergency. She's not going to make it. So this is everyone."

 "Great," you smiled down at her, before walking back around the table to your spot. If you let one hand drag across her shoulder when you left her, well, it probably wasn't noticed.

 "Hi, everyone. I'm Y/N Y/L/N. Welcome to La Rosa Roja. I'm the owner and chef and I'm so happy to have you all here tonight. I've heard this is a big celebration for winning an El Clasico game again?" The room erupted in applause and cheers. You laughed at their joy and enthusiasm. You weren't used to such a large group of athletes. Yet. "And I hear also with a clean sheet for your goalkeeper?" You looked at Sandra, cocking your head to the side, giving her a smile when her teammates all cheered for her. She ducked her head to hide the blush, making your smile grow wider. She was just so darn cute sometimes.

 "Well, congratulations to all of you. I've been told this is a very big deal."

 "You don't watch football?" Pere asked.

 "Unfortunately not very often," you said with a nervous giggle. You weren't usually nervous in front of large groups but something about this large group had you wanting to hide in a corner.

 "Um, so I've prepared a menu for you all. Five course tasting menu. I'll break you up into groups and each group will prepare a different part of the menu. At the end, everyone can try anything they feel safe trying."

 "Sounds like you've been warned some of us are terrible cooks," Patri said.

 "I may have been warned of that, yes." You felt yourself beginning to relax and smiled at Patri. "Don't worry. If the food is really terrible, I'll make you something else."

 "Can I burn our food on purpose?" Jenni whispered to Alexia, who smacked her leg in response.

 "Just please don't start any fires," you said. You laughed when she paled at having been heard. "Alright let's get started. Split off into groups of 3 or 4. The ingredient list for what you'll be making is on the table in front of you. All of the ingredients are on those two shelves in the back corner," you said, pointing to two large stainless steel units in the corner. "Let's get going." You clapped your hands.

 And then the chaos began. Girls were shouting across the table at each other that they were claiming certain people for their team. Patri snuck under the table to swap her ingredient list with the table next to her. Pere folded her list like an airplane and threw it at Jenni, hitting her in the shoulder.

 You sat back in amusement and watched it all unfold over the next several minutes. And then something else happened. As soon as they all chose their groups, they settled down and got to work. You could see scrunched eyebrows and whispered tactics about tackling the dishes. Alexia calmly walked over to the shelves and picked up all the ingredients she would need. Pere ran for the shelves, tripping over someone's foot. Bruna and Cata went together to get everything.

 You met Sandra's eyes and gave her a soft smile.

 Walking around the table, you helped each group properly make their food.  You showed Cata how to debone a fish. She wiggled the bones at Jana, making her scream. You told Irene the best way to make sure the vegetables cooked evenly despite being different shapes and sizes. You made suggestions to Aitana about substitutions she could use if she didn't like the ingredients you had picked out.

 Stepping up behind Sandra, you covered your laugh with a cough. Somehow, she had ended up on cutting duty. Clearly her teammates had never witnessed her lack of kitchen skills. Sandra was terrible with a knife. You often showed her the proper way to handle a knife but she could never seem to get it down. When you saw the knife slip and nearly catch her hand, you stepped up closer, grasping her hand tightly over the knife handle.

 "Hang on, you're going to injure yourself," you said gently. You leaned over her shoulder so you could see the cutting board in front of her. You moved the onion closer, showing her how to protect her thumb, by holding it behind the onion, and curling her other fingers to help guide the knife. Holding the knife with her, you slowly lowered it and lifted and lowered until she seemed to get the rhythm. "Okay, try it yourself." You moved next to her to watch properly. Her face was red and you imagined that if you touched her right now, her skin would be hot.

 "Um, thank you," she said, clearing her throat, not looking up at you.

 Smiling to yourself, you patted her hand. "You'll get it. Keep working at it. Or let Alexia take over." You smiled at Alexia who was watching with interest. "I wouldn’t want anything to happen to those fingers of yours. I'd think they’re important to a goalkeeper,” you added with a wink. You kept moving, ignoring Pere and Patri who were hitting each other's legs and looking over at Sandra.

 "I know we're Spanish but that was…intimate," Leila said, whispering the last word to Sandra. Sandra blushed and continued cutting the onion, refusing to respond.

 "She's just being a good instructor," Alexia said, smirking at Sandra.

 When the dishes were done, you instructed them all to put the plates on the table in the middle of the room. It was a large table with a stack of plates and utensils at one end. Patri was first in line, waiting for everyone to put their dishes down so she could get some of each one. She nudged Leila out of her way when Leila tried to get in front of her in the line.

 As Patri made her way down the table, her eyebrows rose on her head. "Hey Sandra, looks like you're really in luck tonight. Aren't all of these your favorite dishes?"

 Since Sandra had already known the menu for the night, she forced herself to look down the table at the different dishes and act surprised. "Wow, it's almost like I set this class up myself or something."

 You laughed, drawing some attention to you. You and Sandra had spent quite a bit of last weekend creating the menu for tonight. "Sorry, sorry. Ignore me."  You busied yourself cleaning up while they all filled their plates.

 "Going to join us?" Alexia asked, stepping up to you with a plate.

 "I was waiting to see the general reactions after the first bites before I got some for myself," you admitted. "I don't generally join the people in these classes for a meal but I thought I could make an exception tonight."

 "I thought you might," Alexia said. She left the plate with you, going back to her seat. You smiled to yourself. Sandra had been right about one thing - Alexia would figure it out first.

 Hoping not to be too obvious, you filled your plate and went to sit back in your seat at the front of the room. Or that had been your plan until Patri called you over to sit with them.

 "We want to hear all about how it feels to be so amazing in the kitchen," Patri said when you took the empty seat on the other side of Sandra.

 Relaxing, you started talking. Food was something you could talk about all day. You'd always loved being in the kitchen and creating. Your parents used to let you go crazy putting things together and they used to eat it, no matter how disgusting it was. Now, they were happy to see that their years of eating cereal baked on literally anything had paid off and you were getting to spend your time creating food for others.

 You found them all easy to talk to, though you hadn't doubted that they would be. Sandra had a lot of love for all of them and you couldn't imagine her feeling that way about people who were purposefully difficult. You had been worried that your nerves would make you tongue-tied but that hadn't happened. It probably helped that Sandra had pressed her leg up against yours under the table, giving you some connection. Your nerves were probably clear to her with your constant hand gestures. You only used your hands that much when talking if your nerves were on edge.

 Talking to them, you hadn't noticed how late it had gotten until your house manager came in to let you know they had closed the dining room.

 "Oh shoot." You looked down at your watch. "I'm sorry, could you excuse me?" You rushed into the kitchen, apologizing to your team about being so absent tonight and letting them know you could clean up for the event if anyone needed to get home on time. Generally the kitchen staff stayed about an hour past closing to clean but you knew with the class tonight, it would take more than an hour. A lot of the staff had young children and it wasn't their fault you had lost track of time. And the girls had created a lot of dishes.

 "Sorry about that," you said, walking back into the back dining room. "Just needed to talk to my team for a minute."

 "Everything okay?" Jenni asked.

 "Oh yeah, no problem. Just letting them know I'll stay and clean up. So many of them have families waiting at home for them and I hate making them stay late."

 "We made the mess, we can clean it up," Alexia said. "There's a lot of us. We’ll be done in no time."

 "Oh, that's okay. Please don't worry about it." You started stacking the plates to take back to the kitchen. "I really enjoyed having you all here tonight."

 Jenni whistled loudly, startling you. "Hey, goons, let's clean this mess before we head out." And just like earlier, the room erupted into organized chaos. Within thirty minutes, the dishes were drying in the kitchen, the table cloths were in the wash, the tables were moved back where they belonged, the floors were cleaned, and the kitchen was spotless.

 "If any of you ever decide you want a career change, I'll hire you," you laughed, looking around the room with your hands on your hips. They'd cleaned the place so fast and so well that your staff was going to get to go home even earlier than normal. "Thank you so much for doing this. It was too much."

 "Thank you for a great evening," Irene said. "We really appreciate everything." She shook your hand as she walked out. They each thanked you as they walked out.

 "I'm just going to stay back for a minute, make sure the bill's all settled. I'll meet you in the parking lot," you heard Sandra tell Leila. She lingered until everyone left before approaching you.

 "That went well," you said.

 "I think so." She reached out, resting a hand on your hip. "Coming home soon?"

 "Yeah, I just have to finish up some paperwork and then I'll be home."

 "Sounds good," she said, giving you a small kiss. "See you in a bit." She gave you another kiss before walking out. You stood there for a moment, just appreciating how much love Sandra had brought into your life. You were grateful for her every day.

 Turning to walk to your office, you saw the leather jacket slung over the stool in the back. Picking it up, you noticed the rip in the side from when you'd accidently caught the material in a fence. Hurrying after Sandra, you opened the door to the main dining room, expecting her to be alone.

 "Hey, baby, you forgot your jacket." Except, Sandra wasn't alone out there. Her entire team was still standing in the dining room. They all went completely silent when you walked in with her jacket. "Um, oops." You gave Sandra a sheepish smile and a small shrug.

 "Guess that explains the pink lipstick on her face now," Leila said smirking. Sandra's hand immediately came up to her face, trying to wipe it away.

 "Sorry, thought I got it all," you said, rubbing your thumb over the tip of Sandra's lip to wipe the last bit away.

 "Called it," Patri said, high fiving Pere.

 "Alright, alright don't be weird," Sandra warned, looking at Pere before she could say anything. She lifted your hand to her lips. "Y/N is my girlfriend."

 You found yourself squished up against Sandra, in the center of a huge group hug. You'd never been part of team sports growing up and this unique position caused you to laugh. You buried your face against Sandra's shoulder, feeling her press a kiss to the top of your head. "This is their way of saying they approve," she whispered to you.

 "We definitely approve!" Jenni said, as they all stepped back.

 "Don't think you'll need me to help with those tickets, after all," Alexia said.

 "No, I don't think so either," you said, smiling. You laced your fingers with Sandra.

 "But we're going to fully expect you to start coming to games now. We'll make a full-time public WAG out of you," Jenni said, laughing.

 "A what?"

 "Nothing. It's nothing. We'll talk about this later," Sandra interrupted before Jenni could answer. "Okay, everybody out! Let's go, let's go." She started shoving them towards the front door, leaving you looking after them. When she ushered the last person out, she hurried back to you to give you a lingering kiss. "I'm so happy. This went so well."

 "She says with surprise in her voice."

 "They're just a lot. So thank you for handling them like a champ."

 "If I'm going to be the WAG of a champ, I have to act like one," you said, laughing at the expression on her face. "I may not know a lot about football but I know what that one means. My brother is always drooling over Victoria Beckham and Georgina Rodríguez. He's used the term before." Sandra dropped her head to your shoulder, groaning.

 "I'm sorry about them."

 "Why? She clearly meant it in a good way." You scratched the back of her head. "I'm looking forward to being a part time public WAG," you whispered. “I already have a full time job.”

 "And I'm looking forward to being a part time public um, what do they call the wives and girlfriends of top chefs?"

 "Nobody cares," you laugh, amused she would even consider that a word existed. "But I'll know."

 "Perfect. That's all that matters." She kissed you again, squeezing your hand. "Your paperwork going to take long? I can just hang out so you're not alone."

 "Maybe half hour?"

 "Okay, go. I'll be out here."

 "If you're going to be here, you might as well sit with me," you said, tugging her behind you into your office. You tossed her jacket in the corner, pulled her down into your lap, and turned on the computer. "Motivation to work harder and get home sooner," you said when she looked down at you.

 "Or is this just your way of asking me to distract you? Because this seems like a very good spot to be in for that job." She wrapped an arm around your shoulder, leaning down to bite your ear.

 "Keep your mouth to yourself for thirty minutes, Paños."

 "Okay, okay," she said, watching you start typing data into the spreadsheet you'd pulled up. Sandra grinned to herself. You hadn't said anything about keeping her hands to herself.

Capturing the Stunning Faces of Morocco

French-Moroccan artist Leila Alaoui has always been fascinated by the rich ethnic and cultural diversity of her native country. Inspired by the aesthetic and approach of Robert Frank’s The Americans and Richard Avedon’s In the American West, she started traveling through Morocco with her portable portrait studio, documenting the people she met along the way. Her ongoing project, “The Moroccans,” is a celebration of her countrymen and heritage. Alaoui’s project is complicated by the fact that Moroccans are particularly apprehensive about being photographed. “Most Moroccans grow up hearing stories of witchcraft and are often afraid of the ‘evil eye.’ It is commonly believed that one can throw a spell at someone by using his or her photograph,” Alaoui said via email. “Moroccans are also tired of being photographed by Westerners as ‘exotic’ subjects and have grown to react aggressively towards anyone who wants to photograph them without permission.”

Undeterred, Alaoui has embarked on about 20 road trips across the country in the last few years, traveling through the Atlas Mountains, the Rif Mountains, the Sahara, and a variety of coastal and inland regions of Morocco including Essaouira, Tangier, and Marrakech. In each location, Alaoui sets up her portable studio in public places, markets, and other private gatherings after spending a few days getting to know the locals. “I believe that being a Moroccan photographer makes people feel a bit more comfortable once they feel they knew me a bit more,” she said.

Alaoui photographs anyone who passes by her studio or asks about her project. She prints a small photo on site with a portable printer and then distributes the photos to all the people she photographs. “Sometimes if I see interesting faces walking by, I run after them and try to convince them to do a photo. But they usually don’t accept,” she said.

Morocco’s geographical diversity gives each region distinct traditions and lifestyles. Part of Alaoui’s intention is to capture some of those characteristics, some of which are disappearing as the country continues to develop. “In most Berber villages, for example, baby girls were given face tattoos so people could recognize to which tribe they belonged. Today, there are very few women with these tattoos,” Alaoui said.

Alaoui’s photographs are on display in the Photomed Festival in Sanary-sur-Mer, France, until June 15.

Il 13 ottobre arriva Frieren – Oltre la fine del viaggio 1, attesissima opera vincitrice del Taisho Award 2021, che sarà disponibile in un’edizione regular e una speciale variant con tiratura limitata. Cosa significa la vita per una maga elfica che ha davanti a sé migliaia di anni? Questa è la storia di Frieren, leggendaria eroina che, insieme ai suoi compagni, ha sconfitto anni or sono il Re Demone ed è ora alla ricerca di un significato più grande per la vita millenaria che l’attende, mentre i suoi vecchi compagni periscono per la loro mortalità.

Per J-POP manga arriva il 20 ottobre il nuovo volume della Osamushi Collection: Big X 1, in cui il maestro Osamu Tezuka torna a trattare i temi della Seconda Guerra Mondiale e del nazismo, questa volta mescolando azione, satira e un omaggio all’estetica dei supereroi anni ‘40.  Sempre il 20 ottobre arriva anche a conclusione l’eterna saga de La Fenice, con il dodicesimo volume, che racchiude i primi lavori del maestro Tezuka riguardo alla sua saga più longeva.

27 OTTOBRE

I primi due volumi dell’opera saranno disponibili contestualmente e in allegato al primo volume ci sarà un mini-shikishi dell’autore, solo con la prima tiratura! Dopo Killing Stalking e Blood Bank, arriva la nuova serie made in Lezhin per gli amanti dei webcomic coreani: Bj Alex; il nuovo irresistibile Boy’s Love che mescola commedia e dramma in un’esplosione di sensualità e mistero.

Il 27 ottobre si conclude l’emozionante viaggio nello slice of life più seguito degli ultimi anni: Horimiya! Don’t Give up Now - Ch 1

A/N: There's chapter is mainly Serkan-Centric.

I apologize for medical inaccuracies. I suck at research.

Eda stepped out onto the terrace, she wore a floor-length purple gown, her hair was curled and swept over one shoulder. She was at a charity gala that Efe’s company was having to support scholarships and education for young women in today’s world.

After finding out that Serkan had kept so vital of a secret from her, Eda could no longer trust him and left for Italy. She finished her school work. Efe came to her graduation. They celebrated with dinner and caught up with one another.

At the end of the night, Efe offered her a job with his architect firm and Eda gladly accepted. She did not want to return to Turkey. She didn’t think she could handle being close to Serkan or run the risk of seeing him or working with him because they would be in the same field.

Eda started to build a life for herself in Italy far away from the heartbreak and betrayal she experienced. While she missed her aunt and the girls her new life was good.

She loved her job, she loved Italy. She was excited about where her life was heading, the only dark cloud was whenever she thought of Serkan.

She hated to admit that she thought of him often. Too often.

She looked up at the night sky, eyes shining brightly. The stars were out and they never failed to make her think of Serkan.

Her smile faded, she crossed her arms over herself.

She resented that she sometimes wondered how Serkan was doing. Had he moved on with his life? Was he happy now? Did he ever think of her? Did he miss her?

“Eda!”

Eda turned to see Efe waving her over, he was surrounded by a group of people.

She forced a smile, putting her thoughts of the past and Serkan behind her, and rejoined the party.

Serkan rubbed a hand down his face, once again he stayed late at the office. Working himself to the point of exhaustion. He was so tired, his body ached and he felt like he barely had the energy to leave his office and go home.

He contemplated just crashing on the sofa but his body already hurt. He didn’t want to deal with more aches and pains.

He should have seen his doctor about the headaches he been experiencing but he couldn’t. Maybe it was his way of punishing himself.

He knew on some level that there was something wrong with him but maybe the pain, the suffering he was experiencing was his way of seeking penance for ruining everything he touched.

For breaking the one woman he ever loved.

Serkan pushed up from his chair, he grabbed his jacket from the back of it, slipping it back on, and headed out.

He started down the stairs, stopping when he felt dizzy, and reached for the banister but missed and went sideways.

It happened at once, he lost control of his balance and toppled forward, falling down the stairs his leg twisted, he landed on his hand and his head slammed against the unforgiving floor.

He heard a scream and a flash of red hair, running toward him before everything went black.

When Serkan awoke again, the lights were bright, white walls surrounded him, there was the strong smell of disinfectant cleaners.

He jerked back as the light was shined in his eyes.

“Mr. Bolat, do you know where you are?”

His eyes shot to the voice. A doctor stood over him, shining a light in his eye, looking concerned.

“The hospital,” he answered. “How did I get here? The last thing I remember was being at the office.”

“You had a fall, lucky for you, your co-worker was working late as well. She called an ambulance and you were brought here.”

Serkan opened his mouth to ask who when suddenly his stomach churned violently, bile rose up, he lurched forward and the doctor barely avoided being covered in projectile vomit.

Serkan coughed and sputtered wiping at his mouth with the back of his hand, face scrunching in disgust. “Sorry.”

“Don’t be, I’ll have the nurse get you some water to rinse your mouth out with. It’s very likely you have a concussion but I want to rule out anything serious so I am going to have you sent up for a few tests.”

“Why? I’m fine.” Serkan protested.

“Mr. Bolat when you fell, you didn’t just twist your ankle or land on your wrist, you smacked your head. Head injuries are dangerous and should always be taken seriously. We will run a test and if all looks well we will send you on your way. For now just rest, a nurse will be with you in a minute.”

Serkan opened his mouth to argue that he did not need any unnecessary tests. He just wanted to leave and be left alone but his head was throbbing beyond belief. The words died on the tip of his tongue. Instead, he shut his eyes against the pain.

When he opened them again the doctor was gone. He sighed irritably and leaned his head back against the propped up hospital pillow behind him.

It was almost two hours later before the doctor's personnel staff were all done with his test. Piril had been in and out of the room. She had been the one to call the ambulance. Out of respect to Serkan, she had called no one and told them what happened but refused to leave Serkan alone.

Serkan was annoyed but he knew she did it because she cared and Piril like himself did not show her emotions well.

Piril stepped out of the room when the doctor returned, giving Serkan the privacy to talk to the doctors alone.  

“Mr. Bolat, your test came back and the good news is that you only have a mild concussion, nothing to be concerned about, unfortunately. It’s the only good news I have for you.”

“What are you talking about?” Serkan asked, wondering what else could be wrong. He was fine. He was always fine.

“Our scans show you have a tumor. The tumor appears to be rather large and is pressing down on your occipital lobe. Tell me, Mr. Bolat. Have you been experiencing headaches, nose bleeds, nausea, seizures, blurred vision, loss of consciousness, balance, confusion…”

Serkan’s vision narrowed down, and the doctor’s voice suddenly felt like it was traveling down a tunnel.

A brain tumor. He had a tumor. How was this possible?

“It’s important that you understand your diagnosis and start treatment immediately. Depending on the type of tumor and the placement, it could be very aggressive and dangerous.”

“I want to leave,” Serkan said abruptly as a coldness swept over him.

“I will have your release papers drawn up along with everything you need to know about your condition. I will set an appointment up for you with the head of our neurologist and oncology departments. I will have everything fax over to your primary doctor. I promise you will get the best care we have to offer.”

Serkan said nothing and when the doctor realized he wasn’t going to, he stepped out of the room.

20 minutes later Serkan was in the passenger seat of Piril’s car and she was driving him home.

“Is everything okay, Serkan?” Piril asked when she pulled up outside his place. “You haven’t spoken since we left the hospital. Was the news bad?”

Serkan looked at Piril, he hadn’t yet fully come to terms with what his doctor had told him and he decided now was not the time to discuss it until he fully understood what his condition was.

“I’ll be okay,” He said. He held tightly to the papers the doctor had given him, keeping them out of Piril’s view. “I’ll see you tomorrow. Thank you, Piril. Good night.”

“Good night, Serkan.” Piril nodded, out of concern she waited till he was inside before driving away, hoping everything was okay.

Serkan was greeted by Sirius who whined at his feet until Serkan sat down and the dog could settle its head on Serkan’s knee.

Serkan smiled a barely-there smile, rubbing the top of Sirius' head, and scratching behind his ears and the back of his neck. After a moment, Serkan turned his attention to the papers the doctor had given him, detailing his prognosis, symptoms, and treatments and the stages, and what to expect.

Serkan was feeling lost by the time he was done reading, he twirled the ring on his finger. Eda’s ring.

Eda.

He missed her and he needed her desperately more than ever.

He pushed off the couch, deciding to turn in for the night, he had work tomorrow and then his doctor appointments in the afternoon. For now, he would keep his condition to himself until he learned from the neurologist what can be done to stop the tumor in its tracks.

He was at work the next morning before anyone else even got to the office. He couldn’t sleep the night before and thought he would be more productive at his office working than at home doing nothing.

Piril said nothing about his accident and he appreciated that she did not tell Engin. He wasn’t ready for anyone to know about the problems with his health. He wasn’t even sure if he would tell anyone. He worried about telling his mother.

It was easier to think about others than himself. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do. Where did he go from here?

The day bled together until he got an appointment reminder from his phone, he stood in the middle of a meeting, apologizing but telling everyone the meeting had to be rescheduled for another time because he had another meeting to get to.

“Serkan Bey!”

Serkan almost out the door but he stopped and answered in a tired sigh. “Yes, Leila?”

“I don’t have any other meetings on your schedule,” she said in protest. “Did I make a mistake?”

“No,” Serkan shook his head. “This is a personal meeting. Nothing to do with work. I’ll be back shortly. Field my calls until I return.”

He didn’t wait for her reply before exiting the building and heading for his car.

He was almost to the hospital when his vision blurred, a car honked suddenly. He swerved, narrowly missing smashing into another car.

He quickly pulled over, and pressed his forehead to the steering wheel, breathing deeply.

He shut his eyes tightly and felt a pounding at the back of his skull. It hurt but he breathed through it.

He waited until his head stopped hurting, his vision was still a little blurred when he opened his eyes so he waited and waited until finally, it didn’t seem as bad.

It was almost 15 minutes later before he felt he was ready to pull on the road again.

He arrived at his appointment late, his doctor was unbothered by this but wanted to start running a more thorough test immediately.

Serkan realizing this could take longer than he was expecting called Leila and told her he would be gone for the rest of the day and to reschedule everything on his calendar for today for a later date.

Serkan spent what felt like days but was really only hours being poked and prodded, having test after test done.

He was beyond annoyed with it all and was relieved when the doctor finally sat down to give him his results. However, his relief was short-lived.

He had an aggressive tumor, pressing on his occipital lobe and without treatment, it would get larger. There were a few options available to him, surgery, radiation, chemotherapy. The placement and the size of the tumor made surgery tricky and there was a likelihood that complications would arise. Radiation and Chemo could shrink the tumor but again it could cause further complications. There was no guarantee the treatment would work.

Serkan’s condition was advanced, his chances were lower than the doctor liked. He was in for a long hard battle.

The doctor suggests Serkan go home, take a few days and then they would come up with a treatment plan best suited for him.

Serkan nodded. He knew he should feel something, fear, grief, sadness, anger, something but his emotions felt far away. Almost like he was out of his body and could no longer feel what he was supposed to feel.

He walked out and headed down to the lobby, he was about to step out of the elevator when he changed his mind about leaving so soon.

Instead, he walked up to the receptionist and asked. “Hi, I’m looking for the Oncology floor?”

“Fifth floor.” The reception told him with a sympathetic smile.

Serkan got back on the elevator and took it to the fifth floor.

He walked down the halls, peering inside the rooms, he wanted to look and see what the next few months had in store for him and he wished he hadn’t.

Every room was filled with sickness, suffering, pain. Pale patients lying in beds with no energy, looking like they would rather be dead than alive. Some tossing and turning, crying out in pain, others throwing up in bens, spewing bile everywhere on the nurse in the room, their hospital gowns, and the floor.

However, it wasn’t seeing all that that had him backing away a pit forming in his stomach, his heart growing heavy. It was seeing the loved ones in the room, looking hopeless to help, the grief and sadness in their eyes, their faces twisted in early grief.

How could he possibly put his mother through that? How could he make her watch him suffer for something that might not even work? He didn’t want his mother’s last memories of him to be of a sick man fighting what cannot be defeated.

He turned walking away swiftly. He found his way to the surgical recovery floor.

He looked into the rooms, he found one recovering from brain surgery. There was a young woman in the room, crying and clinging to his hand as if her life depended on it. He couldn’t hear what she was saying but the grief bled through her as she sobs at the man’s bedside.  

“Can I help you, sir?”

Serkan turned to see an older doctor standing a few feet behind him. “I..uh..no, I was visiting a friend but he’s not doing good. I just went for a walk-”

“Say no more,” the man said sympathetically. “It’s never easy seeing a friend or loved one like this. We do what we can to help but sometimes it’s not enough. Take this man for instance,” the doctor indicated to the man through the window Serkan was in front of. “He had a brain hemorrhage, we took him into surgery but the brain is a tricky thing, though we stopped the bleeding it was too late. He has no brain activity and now all we can do now is give his family the time to say goodbye before-”

“I’m sorry. I have to go.” Serkan said abruptly. He couldn’t hear any more. He had to get away. The hospital walls with its sadness, illness, pain, grief, suffering was closing in on him. He needed to get out. He couldn’t breathe.

Was this how Eda felt every time she had a panic attack? Or his mother when she tried to go outside before she overcame her fear?

He left the hospital quickly, retreating to his car, he waited until his panic subsided before pulling back out on the road.

He did not go back to work. He made the drive to his mother’s. She was outside in the garden with Seyfi. She looked to be in the middle of planning one of her galas for her foundation.

She was going through folders, smiling as she said something to Seyfi who nodded jotting down what she said on a tablet.

Seyfi looked up by chance and smiled. “Mr. Serkan.”

His mother got to her feet, her smile wide. She moved forward to embrace him, he met her halfway.

His mother pulled back with a smile. “This is a surprise. I thought you would be at work.” she frowned suddenly. “Is there something wrong? A crisis?”

“No, nothing of the sort.” he lied, he did not want to take her good mood away. “I skipped lunch. I thought we could go out and eat at your favorite cafe by the riverfront.”

Aydan smiled wide. “Really? Yes, I would like that very much.”

Seyfi went to get her things and half an hour later, Serkan, Aydan, and Seyfi were seated at her favorite cafe.

Serkan took in his mother’s face as she enjoyed being out and experiencing everything first hand and just enjoying life, the smile that radiated from her because they were sharing something as simple as a meal lit up the whole cafe.

Aydan had such a love and hunger to enjoy life to the fullest since recovering from her condition that Serkan knew he couldn’t take that happiness from her.

He couldn’t tell her about his illness and he would not put her through the pain, the likelihood that he would survive even with treatment was low and he would not put her through the suffering of watching him die slowly in agony, fighting a war that could not be won.

No, he would not get treatment. He would let things run their course, spend what time he had left with his loved ones and the people closest to him,  enjoying what time he had left in this world.
