||The Witcher tarot | The Devil | Leo Bonhart||
[Other cards of the Witcher tarot can be found here and on my Instagram art account]
[DO NOT REPOST OR REUSE WITHOUT LEGAL AND EXPLICIT AUTHORIZATION]
There are, in my opînion, two major figures of Evil in the book series of The Witcher: Vilgefortz and Bonhart. I could say Eredin too, but honestly he’s way less present in the books than he is in the third game; although admittedly a threat to Ciri, the first two are dangerous from day one. And although Vilgefortz is an evil, disgusting, power-thirsted bastard, Bonhart is downright terrifying through all of the pages he appears in. The whole arc of him hunting/capturing/abusing/enslaving Ciri is intense and he has this sordid ineluctable aura that makes him look unbeatable. The fact he also killed a few witchers only strengthened this impression, making Bonhart, in my opinion, the most terrible antagonist of the series.

Bad Things Happen Bingo Masterpost
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thanks a lot @badthingshappenbingo for the great and inspiring prompts, it was a lot of fun to write for them! 😘 All my stories are for The Witcher (Netflix series and/or novels).
Cruel and Unusual Punishment & Haunted Location:
Broken Mirror, Black Heart - Emhyr var Emreis & Gallatin (Words: 2,970; Chapters: 2/2)
Emhyr var Emreis does not believe in ghosts, no. They are nothing but old wives' tales. And the rumours about the ghost in the guest wing are utterly ridiculous, of course, or are they?
Crutches & Mercy Killing & Big Brother Instincts & Mistreated by Authorities & Toxic Gas & Pinned to the Wall & Animal Attack & Nasty Party & Gangrene & Manhandling:
Earned Loyalty - Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach & Gallatin (Words: 38,430; Chapters: 17/17)
After having been ambushed by humans, Gallatin is seriously wounded. Lucky for him, not all humans hate elves. It's not all that easy for Cahir to fulfil his dangerous mission in the Nazairean highlands either. - This is the story of how Gallatin and Cahir meet for the first time.
Snowed In:
Shelter From The Storm - The Hansa | Geralt's Company Members (Words: 2,130; Chapters: 1/1)
Not long after they have left Toussaint on their way to free Yennefer and to find Ciri, Geralt and his company have to weather a nasty blizzard.
Internal Bleeding:
As He Lay Dying - Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach &/ Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon (Words: 555; Chapters: 1/1)
After her fight with Leo Bonhart, Ciri finds a badly wounded Cahir.
Chickenpox & Get It Over With:
Kindergarten Cahir - Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach & Original Characters (Words: 9,517; Chapters: 5/5)
Instead of being sentenced to raid caravans after lying to Emhyr, Cahir is sent to Vicovaro as a punishment. His mission there: Work at a newly opened kindergarten. His new superior is not exactly happy about him being assigned to this task and there are unexpected complications.
Attempted Rape:
You're the strongest of them all - Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach & Emhyr var Emreis (Words: 1,800; Chapters: 1/1)
Not long after Emhyr var Emreis saved a twelve-year old Cahir from being hanged, he has to save him again. This time not from the authorities or their enemies, but from his own men. Set not long after Emhyr returned to Nilfgaard to regain his throne.
Caught in a Snare & To Serve Man/Cannibalism:
An Elf Once Went A-Hunting - Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach & Gallatin (Words: 7,690; Chapters: 5/5)
Gallatin goes hunting. It does not go according to plan. Luckily an old friend shows up just in the nick of time.
Misunderstanding:
Always Yennefer - Geralt z Rivii | Geralt of Rivia/Fringilla Vigo (Words: 1,111; Chapters: 1/1)
While Geralt and Fringilla are having sex in the Beauclair library, Fringilla suddenly has an epiphany. Unfortunately not a pleasant one.
Creepy Crawlies:
Beware The Bees - The Hansa | Geralt's Company Members (Words: 2,125; Chapters: 1/1)
On their way to find Ciri, Geralt and his company travel through the wild forests of Riverdell. Suddenly they are under attack. It stings.
Rope Burns:
Thanks For The Save - Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach & Gallatin (Words: 1,454; Chapters: 1/1)
Gallatin is in a tight spot and guess who shows up to save him? Again.
At The End Of Their Rope - Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach & Dheran Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach (fic illustration)
Branding:
Mine - Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach & Emhyr var Emreis (Words: 919; Chapters: 1/1)
Just one day between Emhyr var Emrise and a young Cahir, but a very significant (and painful) one.
Medical Torture:
The Book Of Monoliths - Istredd & Vilgefortz of Roggeveen (Words: 2,444; Chapters: 1/1)
After Thanedd, Vilgefortz pays Istredd a visit to take the Book of Monoliths from his prisoner. However, it is not as easily done as he expected.
Faux-Affectionate Villain:
All That Blood - Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach & Leo Bonhart (Words: 500; Chapters: 1/1)
Leo Bonhart's farewell speech to Cahir after their fight at Stygga Castle.

i think the witcher makes me feel a profound sadness every night because it’s about all the things we love so much, or that we wish we had, but can never get back. the tragedy of the uncontrollable. the pain of loss.
ciri, despite her youth and innocence, loses her home and family and then she even her adoptive parents, and then she even loses her youth and her innocence, and is left with nothing but a grotesque scar symbolizing her trauma that doesn’t fit her childlike face and a hardened, green glare. and a sword, which is only a burden.
her parents, despite their incredible love for her, despite all of their agony and sacrifice to get her back, despite their own loss of their honor, their pride, their blood — they lose her too. they lose a child, the most tragic loss of all.
dandelion loses his best friend, clutching at his memories like the weeds growing by loch eskalott, trying to grasp the last twenty years to write his memoires.
milva hears her father’s words when she shoots, and his wheezing echoes in her mind.
regis lost himself, his entire life, all the people he ever loved and chased away.
cahir, despite his large family that loves him more than imperial orders, can never return to darn dyffrya, feel the sun on his face in vicovaro ever again.
angoulême wonders if her mother would have loved her had she not abandoned her, imagines what her hand patting her head in praise could have felt like.
and then geralt loses them. all of them, one by one.
and nimue, reading about it all, can never meet the figures of the legend she has obsessed over for years and years… she has her part to play in it, she can know their voices from dialogues and know their faces from etchings, but will never be able to tell them she loves them, tell them how much they mean to her.
even when they find what they’re searching for, even when they find what they’ve desired so — it’s only for a bittersweet moment. they shortly lose it again. everyone in this series is so intertwined together and caught in the same snare of destiny, and at the very same time so very alone and abandoned
#additional edit: this textpost brought to you by carolina in my mind#edit: and no one’s loss is the exact same! even though there are parallels — everyone suffers differently.#i used to feel guilty describing my experience as ‘loss’ because it wasn’t pertaining to death and that’s typically what loss insinuates#but you can lose so many things outside of death. and inside of death i don’t rule that out — but for me at least#the witcher books made me realize there are soooo sooo many ways to suffer and girl i’m not special lol#like all the protagonists experience this horrid sadness and tragedy and they KEEP LIVING and then they SUFFER EVEN MORE and then they DIE#and its like omg thats horrifying but like that didnt make the read any less enjoyable. in fact it made it more so#if they just were happy all the time there would be no story#so it made me realize that even if you are suffering or even if you have lost. life is still worth living#and also that rage and ‘bad’ emotions and selfishness and all these evil things that rise up from within a person are in fact natural#the creation of children of contempt seems almost unavoidable in the world we live in#but the point is that you cant stay a child of contempt. you have to humble yourself or someone else (BONHART) will humble you#dont hurt others or leo bonhart will snatch that beret with the rooster feather right off your ashen-blonde head#the witcher books#txt#analysis#kind of? analysis: a big theme in this is loss. lol kind of obvious not really groundbreaking you’ll have to forgive me#f: a hansa's a hansa#f: i want to see the sky#damn who would think a war saga would be a tragedy smh#obv /s#personal

Do you ever think about how Geralt of Rivia’s journey started off with him desperately trying to be what society wanted him to be, a cold-blooded, emotionless paid killer who never takes any sides based on morals? And how his refusal to take sides ends up with him being forced to kill a bunch of people who really didn’t deserve to be killed, but who were driven to horrible villainy by his original refusal to help them? And how the framing device of the first short story collection is him going mad with guilt over the fact that he essentially sided with a murderous eugenicist through inaction?
And how the main theme of the entire saga is fighting against pre-determined destinies that try to force you into a role you’re not comfortable with? How Geralt constantly struggles with witcher traditions and, let’s call it by its name, toxic masculinity? How Yennefer’s arc is about trying to hold on to her humanity while functioning in a cutthroat world of backroom politics? How Ciri’s entire story is about how everyone wants to use her in some terrible way and force her into some role because of the accident of her birth and the only reason she manages to overcome them all is because of her adoptive parents who love her for who she is and are trying their damn best, despite being deeply flawed people, to keep her safe and happy and free?
How Leo Bonhart is what Geralt is expected to be and what he tried to be, and he’s unambigously the most repulsive monster in the whole series, matched only by Vilgefortz, who’s basically the same thing for Yennefer, and they both serve to contrast the kindness and the moral backbone both Geralt and Yennefer manage to develop in themselves because of the healing power of their unconditional love for their daughter that drives their actions throughout the novels? And how the saga ends with Geralt dying while trying to defend local non-humans from a pogrom, in direct contrast to how he fucked up the situation in Blaviken at the start, and Yennefer dies trying in vain to heal the man she loved, in a final act of defiance towards her role as an unfeeling realpolitick ghoul? Because the whole book series was about how in a cruel and cold world, in the Time of Contempt, love and kindness, and willingness to take the side of the victim, and the side of freedom are the only things that matter?
And do you ever think about how the reason Andrzej Sapkowski started writing the Witcher stories was because he was asked to write some fantasy by his gender non-conforming kid, Krzysztof Sapkowski a.k.a. Catherine Frene?  And what new meanings this brings to this story about a bisexual teenage girl who refuses to become what various creepy fuckers claim she’s destined to be because of the circumstances of her birth? (By the way, I can’t find the source now but I distinctly remember reading some years ago about them straight-up saying that Ciri was recognizably based on them.)
And how then CD-Projekt rolled in and all they took from all that is that Geralt is a cool, snarky killer guy who FUCKS and their game starts with undoing his final sacrifice, and there is no mention of Ciri or Yennefer whatsoever, and the narrative heavily pushes the idea that neutrality is the best choice in a conflict between fucking fantasy fascists and the Scoia’tael? And how when Sapkowski expressed that he dislikes the games, the whole fucking world mocked him?
Because I do. A lot.

Poor Ciri and her visions. It made me feel sad.
DO YOU WANT ME TO DIE? YOU CAN'T GIVE ME JASKIER PETTING A CAT!!!! It’s so adorable my poor heart can't take it!
Also very nice sequence with Codringher and Fenn. And Gods! Did Geralt call Jaskier, Jask? Are we in a fanfic or something? 😍
Emhyr is kinda hot? I didn’t remember him being so handsome… he gives me Ben Barnes vibes.
Also wtf… is that Kira Metz?
Houvenagel and Leo Bonhart… my my I already have goosebumps only by heating their names…
What is wrong with Triss Merigold? She is kin of a bitch? Her wig gets worse every new season…
Dijkstra, Dijkstra, Dijkstra… what the f are you doing?
Radovid asking Jaskier to sing… wow…
Chair and Gallatin.. I ship them now!
Fringilla… I almost didn’t recognise her…
HOLY MOLY… THAT SONG OF JASKIER'S IS SO SAD AND AMAZING! It’s about Geralt, right? Even Radovid noticed it!
Jaskier my boy, please stop being so sexy and put your feet of the table!
No, no, no Jaskier don’t trust Radovid! Please!
“Does the Witcher know how lucky he is to have you?” Is this freaking GERASKIER I'm hearing??? ❤️
What was that horrible monster? Creepy as hell!
NO, RIENCE, DON'T KILL THE CAT! Everyone else ok, but not the damn cat please!!!! (Cat wasn’t harmed)
Were Istredd and Tissaia a thing also in previous seasons? I don’t remember.
Poor Yennefer…
Fake Ciri???
Also Henry Cavill deserves an oscar for his performance. Nobody will ever be a better Geralt than him.

while you pretty much already answered this when you said you were disappointed they completely cut shani from the show ( I agree she is one of my favorite of the more minor characters and one of the few female characters from the witcher that is not either royaly or a sorsercess) but who do you think is the most important book character that the show completely cut out?, they included some of the more unimportant mage characters in the ball and coup episodes and they are including characters like Nimue, Stribog and Assire next season, and they aren't done announcing the casting for season 4 yet so we will see if they include Angoulême earlier so she can have a big more time to be fleshed out than she does in the books
They already have Milva and Regis so I expect we'll see Angoulême. She has a great backstory, and I would love to see it in depths. (Even though Stygga Castle is really going to hurt) Just hoping they don't cut out Anna Henrietta or The Aen Elle. I think the reason they cut Shani as well as Geralt's dragon threesome/foursome? and Triss' romance out because they wanted to make his relationship with Yen more romantic. Which I get. Even though I loved Shani. (my forever girl) As for the cut out... Honestly if I had to pick, I would say Eskel. I know he was not cut out per say, but they killed him off and I thought that was a really bad choice. It didn't add anything to the show or to Geralt. It just pissed us off. I'm also curious what is going to happen since they killed Rience off early. Who is going to partner up with Leo Bonhart and Stefan Skellen? I will take a lot of flak for saying this, but despite all this I really enjoyed the show personally. I look at the show like a fun fanfiction instead of taking it as heresy. (I have been told 'drink piss wh0re' by 'fanboys' because I enjoyed the show. I get being passionate about a show, but trying to hurt real people over fiction... sad. Very sad) I feel bad for the actors that are just doing their jobs taking all that abuse.

Spoilers for the books here but after that recent Hanza RB I did I got to thinking of just how little they are even mentioned in the games, you would think being how beloved they are and how important they are to the second half of the story the devs would have done more than just mentioning Angoulême, Milva and Cahir each once in three games
side note but with Angoulême and Milva they seem to only be motioned in the first game and I cant find any clips of this scene if it exists, they could just be mentioned in an in universe note or book, correct me on this if you know, since most people haven't played the first game since it is so dated controls and graphics wise, at least considering how little people seem to talk about the story in the fandom
and Cahir is mentioned in the third game but only in the context of Geralt remembering he knew a man named Cahir
Like I know they’re dead but I don’t remember them being mentioned by Regis or Dandelion more than once, at the end of Blood and and Wine when Regis and Geralt are drinking to their fallen comrades they don’t even say any names, is the implication supposed to be that their memories of Their time in the hanza never returned?,
I feel like even the reference easter eggs to Mistle and the Rats and Leo Bonhart with showing Ciri`s tattoo and her briefly mentioning it and her medallion being a Cat witchers is more substantial than any references the hanza got
if I’m forgetting any references please remind me, with all the callbacks the games did to book only info/easter eggs im really surprised the hanza was mostly forgotten
and yes I know we got them briefly in thronebreaker and they have Gwent cards, but I just wanted more
