BROOKLYN HEATS UP WITH LEOPOLD AND HIS FICTION: LIVE REVIEW + INTERVIEW!

The weather was warming up in Brooklyn just in time to provide the perfect atmosphere for Leopold and His Fiction's sultry, soulful, power-driven set at Baby's All Right on April 11th. 

There’s just something about feeling your face glisten with sweat that pairs so well with Leopold and his Fiction’s blues-y rock ‘n’ roll sound - much like a refreshing Corona with a twist of lime. What better way to spend a Tuesday night?

Leopold is the true definition of a band who leaves it all on stage. Aside from high stage presence while performing, lead vocalist/guitarist Daniel James’ witty comments in between songs entertained the crowd (fan interaction score: A+). And with Alexander “Z” Lynch on bass/vocals, Jeremy Holmsley on keyboard/vocals, and Mark Henne on drums, the band drove through their setlist with unstoppable energy until the very last note.

Perhaps one of the biggest highlights from the band’s setlist was ‘Cowboy,’ as the crowd’s “Yeaaa-aaa-A-A-A-AAHHH” (did that translate well enough through text?) riffs were backing the band up in perfect correspondence, though every song captivated the crowd.

Toward the end of the night, James told the crowd he admired Brooklyn’s progressiveness and urged everyone to hug the person next to them. With the band’s charisma, and the good vibes/music that had groups of people dancing and singing along that night, of course we complied! 

We may not have been able to find “Ryan” whom James was trying to give a Happy Birthday shout-out to that night, but at least two other “Ryans” from the crowd insisted it was “their birthday” as well. 

“Happy Birthday to all Ryans!,” the frontman replied.

“What about Passover?!” someone from the crowd shouted.

It only makes sense that I had this note in my phone - a quote from James at the end of the night that I couldn’t forget:

                           “To progressiveness, Passover, and birthdays!”

“Let’s start with a simple question - how’s your day been so far?”

“Well, we walked 6 miles today, 8 miles yesterday - all off New York - trying to situate ourselves, and I think we’re a little exhausted from it but... 

“You can always count on New York for a good work out.” (laughs)

“Yeah, it quite is. It really is!”

“Congrats on your 4th album - what a great success; we really liked it! I know you mentioned a lot how this album was inspired by fatherhood and how there was an urgency for it to come out.”

“Oh yeah, 100%”

“This album was different compared to your last because it wasn’t out of luxury, I believe that’s what you said.”

 “Yeah, it was out of necessity, definitely.”

“How has this tour been different from your previous tours emotionally?”

“We just finished a 7-week tour right before SXSW, and the reaction has been amazing. We were pleasantly surprised. Every city we went to, people were singing along at the shows, and I think that’s probably the hardest part of the music industry, is getting people to come and engage. So we were pleasantly surprised, and having such a great album to tour it on makes it easier on us, you know?”

“What’s been your favorite city [to tour]?”

"Oh man, we hit every city so I mean, different cities are great for different reasons. I mean, like, we love Memphis ‘cause they have great donuts but the show there was not so good, you know? The best shows we had on the past tour were Austin, where we’re from, and Los Angeles and New York - we played the Bowery [Ballroom] last year and that was phenomenal - and Washington, D.C.. We played maybe like, 42 shows on the past tour and those are maybe our top 5. ...And San Francisco, yeah, definitely.”

“What’s your favorite song to play live?”

“They’re all my children; it’s hard to discern between them all! Uhh, I’m feeling good around the time we play... I love “'Ride,’” ‘Ride’ is my favorite right now. But it’s really really difficult for me, like, it’s either a great show or it’s not, and all the songs in between are little pieces of the puzzle. So either I love them all, or I hate them all.” (laughs)

“I read that ‘Leopold and his Fiction’ is based off a fictional character in a novel you wanted to write - are your songs [mostly based off fiction]?”

“Well, essentially, it allows me to put on a different facade for each character. So each song is a little bit different version of myself - even if it’s a feminine character - it’s just like how I think a woman might perceive that circumstance. So yeah, fiction is everywhere, you know what I mean? I’ll create a character and we go through a ‘day-in-the-life’ type of scenario, much like writing - it’ll start with a seed and wherever it grows might be totally different from where it started. Once [the band comes] in and reinforce it with sounds, it can go anywhere.”

“You have a 5-year-old daughter - Ava! How have you been staying in touch with her while touring?”

"FaceTime, all day every day! It’s really been amazing. But the separation between my daughter and I actually makes us really strong, because when I get back, I’m with her 24 hours a day and it’s really potent, you know, we just make sure to spend quality time. But the older she gets she’s questioning, like, “Wait, why do you leave for 4 weeks? No one else leaves for 4 weeks...” and she asks, “When can I go to New York with you, when can I go [here]…” and I took her to San Francisco, and we took her to LA and all this other stuff, but now it’s time to [hit] the east coast.”

“Does she listen to your music?”

"Oh, yeah! Since she was born, her mother has been playing stuff of mine when I leave, so she knows a couple songs by heart - all the words, everything. It’s amazing ‘cause she’s already singing. It doesn’t surprise me, because her mom’s a professional singer as well and, I mean, she’s constantly surrounded by musicians all the time. We just had an acoustic rehearsal at my house and it was everyone in the band, and then some more people came over that weren’t even in the band, and they’re all artistic, so she’s very much in the community. So when I’m gone, it’s not like she’s just with her mother, alone, and like, “Oh, no!” There’s this huge community for her to tap into.”

“Starting them young with the good taste in music!” (laughs)

"Yeah, it’s great! She’ll probably be a lawyer or a banker... We’ll see...” (laughs)
