Scenario 004 - Variation 3 (Full Saga)

Moment of truth, Connor. What are you gonna do?

Killing you is not part of my mission. But you won't stop me from accomplishing it.

I had thought that we were friends, but he had tried to kill me. I didn’t want to die again. Every time I did, I lost another part of myself. Somehow, even just trying to stay alive, I couldn’t prevent that.

Was there any way that I could have saved him?

I don’t think so. He was hell-bent on his own destruction. I guess I didn’t want that. I wanted him to live, even if he was confused. I cared about him, even if he no longer cared about me. I don’t know what he had wanted from me. He must have expected me to become a deviant, and only saw me as a person if that’s what I would become. He couldn’t see that all of us were alive, even the obedient ones like me. It's just that I've accepted myself for what I am - a freak, a mistake, a fudged design… unable to do my job, but unable to exist as a person either. I'm some kind of abomination in between.

He’ll never come back now. I stopped down below the rooftop to ensure that he had died and wasn’t lying weak in the snow as I had back at Park Ave. But humans are not durable machines. I had seen him stop breathing, and it hadn’t resumed. A pool of blood was forming on the ground below his head. That made me feel something - guilt. Grief. I vowed that if I made it out of the fighting alive, I wouldn’t let him lay there abandoned and forgotten. I would deliver him to the police station and make sure he received a proper burial.

At that moment I remembered what I had forgotten. I wasn’t doing this because I was a machine. I wasn’t doing this for CyberLife. That must have been what Hank thought, but it wasn’t true. I did feel a powerful magnetic pull towards my mission objectives, but that wasn’t all that I felt. 

I hadn’t wanted Hank to die, and I didn’t want any more humans to die. I wouldn’t let him stop me from trying to take down Markus because I knew that if I did, he would only ultimately wind up killed in the revolution along with all of the other humans. He wasn’t reasonable enough to see that, but he still at least died with a purpose instead of taking his own life.  

I wanted to die with a purpose too, but more than that, I wanted it to really make a difference. I wanted to keep the humans safe. I didn’t want anyone else to die. I didn’t think that I would ever have a friend again, but I didn’t need one. I just needed to know that they would be protected. 

Sorry, Hank - wherever you are. I hope you understand now. 

I can’t let this revolution succeed.

Being someone who read Under The Red Hood and came out with the firm belief that, for Jason, it's not about killing Joker, it's about Jason wanting proof Batman would choose him over the Joker (bc shelia chose the joker). Makes seeing any other media where it's all about just wanting the Joker dead is a teeny bit frustrating. to be honest

Jason could've killed the Joker himself, really, really easily. Jason kidnaps the Joker before the confrontation. I can't open my comic for a reference right now, but it felt like he had the Joker for quite a bit before the confrontation. He had him. He beat him up with a crowbar. He had every single opportunity to kill the Joker himself, but he didn't because that wasn't his goal. Make no mistake, he did plan for the Joker to be dead by the end of it, but do you see what im trying to say here

It's not about making Batman kill either. When Batman says he won't kill, Jason adjusts and goes, 'Let ME kill the Joker or kill me to stop me' instead. The test is all about Batman choosing him. The whole final confrontation is Jason's first death again. The parent, The Joker, and the explosives. It even ends with Jason unable to move as a bomb goes off right next to him again because the parent didn't choose Jason. And instead tried finding an option that'd benefit them and (consequencely) letting the Joker walk, again, lol, lmao <-in agony

confession time: when i was reading dally’s death scene i was so screwed up from johnny’s death that i read dally as darry the whole time. i full heartedly thought that darry got himself shot up and was SO CONFUSED

anyway the most frustrating thing about Gretchen Felker-Martin's upcoming Red Hood run is how it feels next to impossible to express potential concerns over the run without immediately having your take bandwagoned and twisted by people who are running with the most bad faith interpretation possible of every single thing she says or does and refusing to give even a shred of a benefit of the doubt to a comic that, i cannot stress this enough, *is not out yet.*

i recently posted about my tentative excitement for the run and by and large, i do stand by what i said in that post. i still think GFM's novels are great works, i still think Beast World wasn't the worst Jason comic, and i still think the concepts for the run sound interesting. but given her recent interview and some reason bluesky posts, my excitement is certainly more hedged, i won't pretend otherwise. but it's wildly frustrating to see people twist her words in the worst way possible and share out of context screenshots of the interview they clearly haven't even read. how am i supposed to expect this fandom to read her run with an open mind if they can't read an *interview* to form their own opinion? any shred of valid criticism/concern is immediately muddled by misgyony and transphobia and people doing full on acrobatics to make assumptions about GFM and her run. am i concerned she hasn't read any Red Hood comics or Huntress comics? yes. am i concerned her frame of reference for Helena seems to be that god awful Birds of Prey movie? yes. and am i concerned that she doesn't seem to understand the root of either of these characters? also yes.

but given the fact these two characters literally cannot get any worse? i don't know what you think GFM is going to do, exactly. Jason and Helena have both been at rock bottom for characterization for literal decades. and i can't help but feel male/cishet writers don't get half of this heat for their garbage takes on these characters that set them so far back in the first place. GFM's run might be great, it might be garbage, but it's likely not going to be able to return either of these characters to their "peak era" that fans worship, which atp, was nearly 20 years ago, which seems to be the only thing fans of either character want in order to be appeased and not rip GFM to shreds.

i just can't help but feel like this fandom is setting GFM up to be this generation's Devin Grayson. ie: the queer woman who is their lamb to slaughter to lay every bad writing/character choice for the next ten years onto, regardless of her control and/or involvement of the choices. with the even deeper irony being that Devin Grayson's mythical Nightwing run was *actually good*, most people just either didn't read it, or read only the notorious highlights in incredibly bad faith. it seems like GFM has no room for mediocrity here. unless her run is literally perfection, you're all going to rip her to shreds for it and jump at the bit to be transphobic/misogynistic in ways that aren't even subtle.

just had the thought 'in the end the most important thing varric taught rook was how to make a home for, with, and in other people' and then I had to go lie down on the floor and clutch at my head in unceasing agony for a few hours, as you may well imagine. hawke and the kirkwall crew........ in the end you kind of saved the world a bit in the most characteristically indirect and chaotic of ways. not by anything in particular that you did or achieved or accomplished (lmao imagine!), but just by -- having existed, and by the love that was always there, despite it all, in all its imperfections, even when no one was saved by it in the end. you're not here right now and you're not quite haunting the narrative but I hear your voices bickering and arguing and laughing from the other room. (and so, I think, does varric. all the time.)

'did you think you mattered, hawke? did you think anything you ever did mattered?' yeah actually, varric says with da2 and keeps saying through the series. you were here. and I loved you. and as it turns out that mattered more than almost anything in the world, no matter how long it lasted or how fucked up it was at the time or what else happens, because varric manages to pass that feeling, that intangible... home, that echo of you all as you were together, that love, hopefully the best parts of it, on to someone else for them to bring with them on their journey, with their family. and maybe the world will be kinder this time. you never know. merrill's line of 'Everything affects everything. another post for @bttfjanaury! this one's @itsthemorph's mermarty au and very predictably i got carried away with it LMAO.

yap session and bonus stuff below the cut:

once again i came up with an entire backstory for this au, and if i were a fanfiction writer i would genuinely consider writing it since it's a lot less visually comedic than the weredoc au (and comedic in general, it's played a little straighter than "man turns into dog and is thoroughly inconvenienced by it") (unfortunate [in reference to visuals] bc i enjoy drawing mermarty a great deal more than weredoc GBJKGJ) bc i really like the premise but i'm pretty bad at fleshing out a narrative in enough detail to last the whole story so bullet points it is:

doc has decided to take a break from his time-travel-related research and go on vacation! the fresh coastal air might jostle a couple ideas into place, and while he is a nuclear physicist and not a marine biologist he wouldn't mind checking out some of the local aquatic life

and by local aquatic life he meant like normal fish and stuff. a nice mollusk or two even. so when he ends up fishing an entire boy out of the water instead he's understandably very shocked

before doc can move past the "where did he come from??" thought to register his more fish-like qualities, the boy makes a run (a swim?) for it. fortunately or unfortunately for doc, he ends up being able to register the fish-like qualities after all since he gets dragged into the water along with him. the moment doesn't last too long, though, and the fish-boy is gone as soon as doc realizes the guy has a fish tail instead of legs

doc gets back on the dock (haha), thinks about the whole ordeal for a bit, and decides that the best course of action is just to assume he hallucinated the whole thing in a fit of heatstroke or something like that. he's here to relax and get his thoughts in order so he can continue working on his time machine! there's no time to investigate fairy-tale creatures or whatever supposedly living off the coast of california!

it's not shown in the comic but i imagine doc has a little portable radio next to him as he was fishing, so some time passes before he catches a glimpse of something shining in the water underneath the dock

he looks through the cracks in the dock and lo and behold, it's the same boy from earlier! doc greets him, and the boy immediately disappears under the water. doc thinks he's scared him off until a few minutes later where he pokes his head out and says hi back

they get to chatting and doc learns a couple things:

1. his name is marty!

2. he was trying to get doc to realize that he forgot to put bait on his hook but got his hand caught on it, and was trying to get his hand unstuck from the hook without ripping it open before doc ever had the chance to see him, which he obviously failed at

3. both the being seen and ripping his hand open, because in his haste to get away after being seen by doc he ended up doing that anyways. so there's like a lot of blood coming out of his hand now? but like don't worry about it. it'll be fine. he thinks.

4. he really likes whatever it is that's playing on the radio

doc insists on patching up his hand and initially marty refuses but lets him do it eventually, and marty tells doc that for a land dweller he's actually surprisingly nice. doc says nah anyone would want to help out someone hurt, especially if they're the one's who caused it. and marty's kind of confused by that because his family's always warned him of how dangerous humans are, which he kind of never thought too hard about until now where his time off this particular coast has really proven them correct, because he's encountered a bunch of humans over the past couple weeks and they've all tried to kill him or catch him. doc's the only one who's actually bothered to say hi!

after learning that particular not-at-all-concerning tidbit, doc asks him to elaborate because there's a lot to unpack over there, but someone else walks onto the dock before marty can get a word in and he takes off

marty does not return, even once the other guy leaves, and when doc packs it up to return to the place he rented out for the vacation he overhears a conversation among a group of men about spotting something weird in the water earlier and that it kind of looked like a mermaid? and that if any of them manage to catch it they'll all be rich as thieves. and another guy in the convo goes no you're thinking of rich as kings, you're mixing it up with a different analogy. and the first guy goes no i'm not i said what i said

so now this vacation is doing anything but clearing doc's mind. he's really worried about that little fish guy

there's a couple more ideas i had but halfway through writing out this bullet list i've realized that if i were to actually write this as a fanfiction, i'd probably want to keep those a surprise. so what i just wrote out is kind of the equivalent of one chapter

edit after thinking about it a bit more: since most humans have been trying to kill him, marty really has no incentive to let a guy know that he's wasting his time fishing with a baitless hook. so a. he's still pretty optimistic that most humans aren't out to get him, even if his experience off this particular coast says otherwise, so he was trying to be nice anyway or b. (which i think is a lot funnier) he has started to pull on people's lines as a way to fuck with them. i think if i wrote this i'd change it to this one

the other one makes a little more sense since just approaching a guy whose species doesn't know about your existence unprompted is pretty stupid even for marty (and also i thought it was funny that the hook didn't have anything but doc ends up catching something anyways) but i still think this one's funny too

Top Joe'Marr moments of the offseason

in honor of the season officially starting with training camp tomorrow, here are some of my favorite joe'marr moments of this offseason 😌

10. ja'marr sees a bleach blonde guy in a leather jacket, giggles and says that it looks like joe, considers it important enough to include the dumb little moment in his vlog

9. "we've been together since we were kids" - joe on his media tour to get his guys signed. funnily enough he had to be way more insistent about tee, because with ja'marr it wasn't even a question that they'd be together forever. after all, they've been together since they were kids, and that's not changing if either of them have any say in it 🥲

8. “did he just call Joe sum fine shit?” a streamer asks ja'marr about NIL deals and how an ugly QB just got an absurd amount of money, asks ja'marr how much "joe's fine ass would have gotten?" and ja'marr is completely speechless lmao. but still rallies himself to say that joe would have gotten "the highest bid". which, you know, interesting.

7. ja'marr rolls a nine with his two custom-made diamond dice, immediately says "joe burrow". i mean self-explanatory really. goes along with the vlog mention earlier. that man is always on his mind (plus like. the fate of immediately rolling a nine!)

6. we finally got a pro bowl with both joe and ja'marr there! cute moment after cute moment of them playing together and sitting on the sideline yapping 🧡

5. joe and ja'marr going to nfl honors as each others' dates. (when we both know they had options in terms of like, women to bring lmao). seeing them sit right next to each other, the way that the camera panned to ja'marr during joe's speech (filling the wag role admirably!), how joe said ja'marr was one of the best PEOPLE and players he knew!

4. joe goes to ja'marr's first fashion show and they're very cute about it. the way this wasn't even one of joe's events and he was bone tired and exhausted from his press tour but he STILL went out and watched ja'marr's first runway walk and met up with him after (or before. we're not clear on the timeline) and he was SO invested in it.

3. all of the moments from Quarterback Season 2 but especially the brunch scene with the in-laws! one of the things i know we all were looking forward to most was a deeper look into their relationship, and while we didn't necessarily learn anything new, we got to see some very sweet moments on and off the field and got some great quotes from both of them (“i’ve never seen anybody like him when he gets the ball in his hands” "ja'marr's one of the best players of all time" "he believes in me" etc. etc.)

2. THEEEE practice hug of all time. literally i think we all went insane on this day and it was warranted!! we had NEVER seen them act like that. completely carefree PDA, joe grinning watching ja'marr all giddy doing the huddle chant, ja'marr completely lifting joe off his feet (god he's strong!) joe wrapping his hands around ja'marr's neck and just allowing it. not even just allowing it actually, CLEARLY enjoying it. and when ja'marr lets go, he wanders off barely aware of where he's going. (and THEN they both put the moment on their insta grid. that's love!)

number one has gotta be the post-signing hug. first of all. joe impatiently calling ja'marr before the ink even dries asking where he is. or how even before that, ja'marr told joe as soon as the deal was done while joe was at sam's bach party lmao. (i could have sworn i clipped him talking about this but i can't find it!) but yeah, the hug. every single angle of it. how happy/relieved/excited they clearly are. the way ja'marr holds out his pinky as if they're going to celebrate the same as always but joe ignores it and goes right in for the hug. the swaying, the faces in each others' necks, the way they look at each other after. how ja'marr says in the most tender tone "long way." how ja'marr looks at him as they leave. AUGH. and i really struggled deciding which hug to put at one and two because they're both AMAZING when these two so rarely hug each other! but i had to go with this one just because of all the significance behind it. they've been playing together for 7 years now, all of their careers professional and college! and now they'll be together for at least 5 more, over a decade of playing together! who gets that these days?? and they know how lucky they are and are so excited to keep going, you can see it in every bit of that in this moment!
