Favourites in this collection were: Why I Write - “entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear” The Long-Distance Runner - essentially a tribute to Tony Richardson. Telling Stories - about her time writing captions in Vogue and just how much she learned and valued what she learned there. We were connoisseurs of synonyms. - “We were collectors of verbs. . . . Less was more, smooth was better, and absolute precision essential to the monthly grand illusion. I can always go on with great things about Joan Didion and her writings. That's one of the reasons why I read this book: Let Me Tell You What I Mean. The book consists of collection of twelve essays written by Didion circa 1968 to 2000. It rises varied topics from newspaper, Ernest Hemingway to Martha Steward and some more. What makes this book interesting is because Didion delivers her message from her perspectives. The experiences she has gone through like the rejection from Stanford university and her encounter with Nancy Reagan enrich the discussions. Despite the fact that I enjoyed reading her own thought and challenges through her struggles, I really cannot get myself lost into the book - this is so unlike my previous experiences with Didion's. Didion (to me) will likely focus on the perupheral details combined with an incisive critique towards the society narrated through her personal experiences. I do not feel the depth of the writings like what I feel like Didion's even they are memorable and enjoyable to read esp the part about motherhood. It's an interesting read even not as wow as her other works. Give this a go tho. ✨Review✨ Let Me Tell You What I Mean by Joan Didion . This collection of essays was one of the few nonfiction books I’ve read this year and it was a nice read, perfect for a cup of coffee and a little annotating. Its twelve essays, each of them quite short and easy to get through but some of them I found not particularly interesting and a few were even a little boring for me. There are a couple of them that focus on her experience as a writer and as I highlighted in the post there was one that I found myself re-reading because I found it so helpful and thought provoking. It’s called “Why I Write” and I think everyone who enjoys writing should read it and interact with the text, it was great! On the other hand there was this one essay about Martha Stewart’s career that I was just like “when will this be over?” Haha but that’s just me. Overall very informative and would recommend if you like Joan Didion, or even if you like to write, it can be an interesting read. Hopefully I’ll be reading more of her work on 2023!! .
