Seeing some conversation about trans anime characters on my dash earlier today is just making me think about Kiku from One Piece and how she's actually some absolutely peak trans representation.

The closest they ever get to misgendering her is a "You're a man?" "No, I'm a woman at heart." exchange that happens, and the other characters immediately accept her. And really that little exchange is good because it makes Kiku's trans-ness textually explicit. The character is otherwise referred to as a woman in the rest of manga.

This includes at the end of the arc when they're celebrating in a hot spring, she's included in the women's bath. In fact, she's explicitly invited to join the women's bath by Nami.

She's a minor character in the grand scheme of things, but there's something genuinely wild about the fact that Oda went out of his way to explicitly make a side character in his manga a trans woman and actually managed to pull off a very respectful portrayal.
