My favorite little assumption about Sherlock & Co. is that Lestrade is a woman because of a quote from Martin Freeman. He wrote an introduction to a 2012 BBC books edition of The Sign of Four, where he said of being asked to play Watson in a modern adaptation;

“Alarms went off in my head. What would ‘modern’ mean, in TV terms? Deductions being rapped? Holmes and Watson bombing around London in a Lexus on their way to meet with Lestrade, a wheelchair-bound lesbian with a penchant for Class-As at lunchtime?”

I don’t think Freeman was being intentionally sexist or ableist or homophobic in this statement. I think he was just trying to be funny? But it landed so badly with me when I was 12 and read it for the first time that I remembered it exactly enough to track down the quote over twelve years later.

Anyway I have no proof or even ability to prove that Lestrade’s being a woman in Sherl & Co. is in opposition to this obscure quote, but I like to think it is.
