People keep saying “let people enjoy things!” as a response to people critiquing booktok, overflowing amount of smut in books and anti-intellectualism. It often comes from the idea that their enjoyment doesn’t affect me in any way. But here’s the thing: IT FREAKING DOES.

If  I go to a bookstore? BOOM! Full of tik tok books! I go the fantasy section? BOOM! Filled with smutty romantasy(and some George.R.R.Martins books). I find a fantasy book that actually is about the plot and not a romantic relationship? BOOM! God-awful, over-flowery language that tries too much to be poetic but really just ends up saying the exact same thing in three different sentences and a plot that I can guess completely after 2 chapters. 

Even libraries, my main source of books, aren’t free from booktoks influence. Naturally they put new books on the self and send the older ones to the archive or get rid of them. As a result the libraries’ fantasy sections are also filled with bad romantasy (or children books. Yeah, my library puts Percy Jackson and ACOTAR on the same self.) 

So if I find a book that seems interesting, I first have to figure out wether or not it is actually about the plot or if it is 10% of plot and 90% of horny thoughts, smut scenes and dumb “banter” etc. “romance” stuff. Then there is around 10% chance my local library has it and maybe 50% chance the library network has and I can order it to my local one. More often than not I have to pay 4-14 euros for the order and I DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY to keep ordering books to borrow!

In conclusion: the booktok girlies’ obsession with  “harmless” fairy smut books and shadow daddies is making it harder for me to find books to read because all library and bookstore shelves are filled with books aimed at them and getting my hands on older books is getting harder and is something I have to budget for even if I only want to borrow them (“perks” of being a student I guess).

So yeah, IT’S NOT HARMLESS, IT’S LITERALLY MAKING IT HARDER FOR ME AND ANY OTHER READERS LIKE ME TO FIND A GOOD BOOK TO ENJOY!
