With the rapidly evolving Covid-19 pandemic, the Clinical Advisory Committee of Endometriosis Australia supports and endorses the announcement to postpone all elective surgery in Australia. We recognise that this impacts people with endometriosis and may delay your surgery. It is imperative to note that no elective surgery should be performed at this time since this exposes patients to the increased risk of being in hospital, the health care team to increased risk from early and undiagnosed Covid-19 infection and uses health care resources at a time where there is a critical shortage of personal protective equipment. We encourage all people impacted by surgical postponement to contact your doctor to organise a plan for care in the interim. Endometriosis Australia recognizes that this is a challenging time for everyone, but if your surgery has been postponed, patients should not be seeking surgeons undertaking 'emergency' surgery for your endometriosis symptoms. At this point, only category 1 surgery should be performed. All emergency situations will be assessed and surgery performed where necessary during this crisis. Please be aware that your procedure has not been CANCELLED, just POSTPONED. This is a tough time for all of us: we have to bunker down, flatten the curve and make it the other side of the hump! I thought those same words until Mental Illness came crashing into my world in a very unexpected and senseless way. On September 13, 2019 I was viciously and brutally attacked by an assailant backstage at my fashion show, for no reason other than the fact that I am who I am, an affluent and successful celebrated celebrity fashion designer, who happens to be gay. As I take a moment to reflect, I realize that I wasn’t alone and others shared similar situations in their lives, without any just cause or invitation. The months after my brutal attack changed my life completely. I was victimized and now recognize the importance of my own mental health. I am working on the steps to heal, myself in this long journey ahead, as I navigate my new sense of reality. I AM ME. I AM LOVE. Then I took a long hard look at my life and realized that not only does mental illness affect me, but, it AFFECTS every single one of us on this planet. After searching deep within my thoughts, I remembered so many instances with someone very close to me who was suffering, that made me realize they have been plagued with the symptoms of those two ugly words…Mental Illness. I realized that for many years I have had to educate myself to be best abled to listen to others to be in the best position to help them and also stay healthy myself. I always made up excuses as to why hearing people’s struggles & seeing behaviours, didn’t affect me, when in fact it did. I think that’s when we realise we are all affected in some manner also. I am proud to do this campaign to bring attention to the four words: Mental Illness and Mental Health, which affects each and every one of us in one way or another!
