I missed this one at the cinema and had been meaning to pick it up since it’s Blu-ray release. Finally nabbed it as part of a sale in HMV on Saturday and gave it a watch last night… I really enjoyed it. The general consensus is that it’s basically Alien, and yeah…I can see that. It certainly uses Alien, and countless other Sci-fi/thrillers as it’s template. While the characters and the world building aren’t anywhere near as great as Aliens, (the characters aren’t particularly fleshed out and a bit silly at times, and the world building is non- existent, albeit somewhat more realistic), this still has a lot going for it. I love the cast, who all do a good job with what they’re given, and some of the plot beats and directions taken with some of the characters were definitely unexpected. The effects are all pretty great too, although a little too reliant on CGI. A few practical effects and a little more gore would have gone a long way, and the ending…while trying to be smart, can be seen coming a mile away. However this film had me hooked due to it’s strongest point, the tension. The tension is through the roof, and it has plenty of uncomfortable moments. Then there’s Calvin. The creature of the feature. Regardless of the overusage of CGI, he was terrifying! Big nope from me! C+
