Off the back of reading some Tortall fic that incorporated the characters, I finally sat down and read Tempests and Slaughter.

Then I had to reread the Daine books.

T&S is better as source material than as a read itself, I think. Watching a character who’s written in the text as sympathetic “Fall” when you already know their egomania and fate is a hard ask. Ozorne simply does not have the personality or character to make this INTERESTING.

We are well into our third decade of work on making Anakin Skywalker sympathetic, and it’s taken QUITE a while to stick. Getting a character to Poor Little Meow Meow status in a single book? Julian May managed to get Marc Remillard there in a book, but May used a frame character who had already forgiven Marc for all of it, plus’s proof of his reform simultaneously (you gotta love time travel loops).

In any case, Tempests and Slaughter is too slight to support “why should we care about Varice and Ozorne” while it’s also still working to support “are young Numair’s university days that interesting?” (Answer: not really)

How did kiran get his powers? Like from a comet yes, but like... How?

Oh boy, Anon, it's a long story. Buckle up, here we go!

Kiran was born to astronaut parents on a space station that was orbiting Mercury. When he was born, a solar flare erupted right as a comet crashed into the space station, sending electromagnetic radiation through both the comet and Kiran. This altered his genetic makeup. His parents didn't survive the accident, but Kiran was rescued by astronauts returning to the space station from a scientific excursion. Eventually Kiran was brought back to Earth, where he was taken in by the organization that owned the space station. There they studied him day and night and pondered how a newborn could survive such an accident. Three months after his arrival on Earth, Kiran's powers started to shine through. His powers of flight, pyrogenesis, enhanced speed and super strength only became stronger as he grew older. When he was old enough, he joined the hero agency known as Apollo's Guild in the city of Lightbridge. He's been there ever since. His hero name, Solar Flare, was chosen because of how he got his powers.

TL;DR: A solar flare combined with a comet sent electromagnetic radiation into baby Kiran. Boom, baby gets powers.
