If the intention is simply to take the appropriated being and whitewash it a different name, it is unequivocally racist and still no different than someone saying that "It's lightningbird not thunderbird so I'm fine and not racist".

If the intention is just to take creepy deerskull monster and make a creepy monster about it, it is more racist to treat it as the same as the beings aforementioned.

As so many things in life are, it really does heavily depend on context, and there is no one easy answer that will make you feel morally correct and not racist/a good Ally all the time. That said, I personally would love and hope for the deerskull imagery to become so overblown and generalized into its own thing that it stops being associated with the winter hunger or the desert swallowing you whole. They are so distinct visually from what the Racists claim to represent them as that, if the voices and creations of the people trying to make them appropriated get drowned out, people won't look at the design anymore and go "Oh that's a __", they'll go "Oh, cool, a monster".

Hey could you weigh in on an argument my server had? It's about whether or not using deer-headed monsters is fine so long as an appropriated native name is not used for them. One side is saying that it's sus simply due to association with appropriating the names even if the design is not associated with the W entity or the Skin entity in their respective stories. The other side is arguing that it's fine to use the general design since it would be more disrespectful to lump deerskull monsters with being appropriating rather than just turning them into a different thing not associated with native beliefs.

@inneskeeper can ya help out here cause i am. kinda divided, i suppose largely it depends on the execution of the monster, but also if it deliberately EVOKES the other entities its fucked either way i think.
