Haunted and plagued by my professor doing the whole "which is because..." trying to get students to fill in the blank thing, as he constantly does, and it was really obvious that as usual it was gonna be a really long and complicated answer that we hadn't actually learned the answer to yet nor had any reason to know. Like he was doing this to INTRODUCE the notoriously extraordinarily complicated subject of artificial cloning to us, on a DNA level. so like obviously no one would be able to fill in the blank.

And as a joke, trying to be like, 'man you don't have to keep doing this, we obviously don't know the answer,' I said something completely unrelated and basic while laughing, like "uhhhh the 3rd rule of cell theory lol"

And this absolute ,Some type Of Guy has the AUDACITY to look at me and say, without joking, "stop trying so hard!"

SAME! sometimes scenes drag! or don't actually contribute to the story or are straight up boring! length =/= quality. i cannot tell you how many times i've given up on reading a fic because an author got lost in the minutiae of useless details and non-events. and that applies with professionally published works too. novellas are great! you can tell a complete story in 15-20k words just like you can tell a complete story in a 10 minute short film or 28 minute episode of a tv show. and shorter than that, one shots that consist of one or only a few scenes have their own place in the fabric of fandom. not everything needs to be a WHOLE story, you just need a beginning, middle, and end. AND TO BE ENTERTAINING. so many people missing the actual point of fandom 🙃 and it's wild to see these takes on tiktok where the video length limit is three minutes 🙃🙃🙃 i'd argue you can't make a proper review of novel-length fanfics in that short of a time-frame!

Yeah, I don't like people treating fics (or fandom really) like a numbers game. It's fandom! The shift to calling fanworks "content" to please a non-existent "algorithm" is honestly depressing! No one (for the most part) is getting paid for this.

Pumping out words to fill out some arbitrary word count shouldn't be the end goal of writing. IMHO, word count should be a non-factor. If you have a story to tell, tell it in as many words as it needs.
