#like it's a very vindictive attitude the way i see people on here NOT in the industry talking about it when like

Posting this not to say don't support the strike, but more to remind people on Tumblr that saying "strikes are supposed to be disruptive" doesn't just mean fans are going to have to deal with not getting more of their favorite tv show or it being delayed, it also means that the rest of us who work in this industry are out of work right now and have no idea when it will return.
I think this sums my feelings up perfectly: "They should get the money they deserve for their work, but it's not going to affect us [below-the-line crew]. In the end they are going to get their deal. But we are going to be in probably about $20,000 to $30,000 debt," Bunch said. "I would love to feel a little bit like, you know, we care about you, and we know that you guys have gone through hell."
It's not that I don't support the writers 100% and want them to have full support (I do!), it's more that there has been a particular attitude on Tumblr surrounding the strike that forgets to consider below the line crew in the equation at all and has been increasingly getting on my nerves.

sorry this became an essay but on the topic of john as misogynist, i know there are obviously more blatant examples in htn and ntn (and admittedly i'm only halfway through htn) but at least to me, i felt the misogyny was there even in gtn with the way he describes his relationship with / treatment of cytherea during the epilogue?
it's a different form of misogyny than the open disdain and degradation leveraged at mercy, but to me “She was the very best of all of us. The most loyal, the most humane, the most resilient. The one with the most capacity for kindness. I made her live ten thousand years in pain, because I was selfish and she let me" reads as a classic example of female objectification in the direction of the mother / martyr figure.
cytherea is defined here by her goodness and how she benevolently and selflessly served others. even though john fully names and takes blame for the pain he forced her to endure, he also places the blame on her for letting him do it. he denies her boundaries, complexity, and autonomy except where it would absolve him of guilt (see also, the scene in htn where john insists the murders at canaan house only happened because boe corrupted her). i know ableism definitely factors in to this attitude and treatment, but i don't think her being a woman was a small part of it either.
never apologize for writing me asks i LIVE for this. but you are absolutely correct in that this also falls back on Cytherea; admittedly it has been a hot minute since i read GtN so i appreciate a fresher take on this!
but yeah you're hitting my personal nail right on the head. from the way the other lyctors talk about Cytherea it really does look like she was subject at least some of the boys' club that the Mithraeum seems to be—(once again, the women began outnumbered and ended outnumbered; i'd love to know more about Cassiopeia and what her dynamic with the rest of the group is, although we get a glimpse from how John talks about her when he admits that she called his shit out for being "appallingly vindictive." would love to know how this translated over after her resurrection? hoping and praying we get more about her in AtN.) though it is, as you say, different from what is leveled at Mercy, and we know these dynamics can absolutely manifest in different ways.
where Mercy is shrill and "unlovable," Cyth is "gorgeous" and she "loved them all" which... isn't exactly degrading on its face but subsequent "poor little Cyth" by Augustine is definitely condescending!! (as much as it is endearing, in a way. they contain multitudes.) but i think most blatantly this behavior comes from John almost... victim blaming her? we can talk in circles for hours and hours about whether or not he could actually cure her cancer but it still stands that whatever he was enabling in her, she was (heavy quotation marks) "letting him do it."
John's insistence that Cyth was corrupted and denying her agency in genuinely hating him is really where i started to doubt that he just fundamentally doesn't misunderstand everyone he considers a close confidant. we already know he's completely fumbled Mercy & Augustine and that's how he ended up the object of two nefarious threesomes and also, like, exploded, but he's misunderstanding that everyone wants him dead because they want him dead. his actions are all the fault of other people and he cannot fathom not being adored, needed, and liked.

Read alongside us here:
@frankendykes-monster : One thing I don't want to do with this blog is discuss the in's and out's of how we got here because I feel like that'd be boring to most people beyond some anecdotals, but as we continue farther along the "behind the scenes" of The Amazing Spider-Man will become harder to ignore. That said:
Tumblr media
Amazing Fantasy #15 is the only comic named "Amazing Fantasy". The series started out as Amazing Adventures, and was a typical Marvel horror/science fiction series being headlined by a Jack Kirby story followed by multiple stories by any number of freelancers (Dick Ayers, Don Heck, Larry Lieber, Joe Sinnott, etc.). With #7 the series is renamed as Amazing Adult Fantasy and becomes a 100% Steve Ditko showcase, but Spider-Man marks an intended shift towards replacing the line with superheroes; August 1962 is also the month where Ant-Man becomes the main feature in Tales to Astonish and Thor is introduced in Journey into Mystery. Truly, the "Marvel Age" of comics was upon us.
Tumblr media
As a two-part story that only takes up 12 pages, "Spider-Man!" gets an incredible amount of work done. It's arguably the most superfluous issue of the entire Ditko/Lee run to return to if only because unlike so many other superheroes, Spider-Man's origin is a very "don't fix what isn't broken". Fans of Spider-Man (2002) or Spectacular Spider-Man especially will notice that's there not much here that they aren't already aware of, though most of the characters introduced here play no important role for the duration of the run, and will only be retroactively made more important by future creative talent down the line.
Tumblr media
One thing that will become apparent throughout the run, however, is that this "source text" incarnation of Peter is a vindictive jackass starting out. In this issue we see proclamations that the rest of the world can walk off a cliff, and his disinterest in stopping the burgler is nothing more than an expression of that attitude. Being nice costs nothing, but being rude and egotistical doesn't either (or does it...considering your family member might be murdered later on...)
Tumblr media
Stan Lee's narration seems prophetic in retrospect given that his aggrandizing prose makes it out that Spider-Man is nothing more than completely destined to become one of the biggest characters in pop culture. The juxtaposition of it with the slouching demurred pose of Peter on the title page and the context which it finds itself at the story's end just highlights that something big is on the way.
Tumblr media
Amazing Fantasy #15, despite the text note that Lee provides at the end of the issue, would be the final one published as it was cancelled to make room in Marvel's distribution line up for a revival of Two-Gun Kid three months later. Several Spider-Man stories that were already done would end up on the shelf until The Amazing Spider-Man #1 is published. It heightens the tragedy of this story in a way that makes it compliment the twist-ending pulp horror that Ditko's output entirely consisted of. In this issue alone, Peter's fame going to his head and it biting him in the ass isn't out of place compared to anything that would have happened in Tales From The Crypt a decade earlier.
Tumblr media
I have to wonder how much of this issue is a rush job because the early Spider-Man stories we will be discussing over the next several weeks are not the highlight of Ditko's career to out it nicely. There's not a lot of room for large panels that have a nice balance of negative space like what one would expect from Ditko in the early 1960's. Spider-Man's original costume was meant to be black (blue serving as a highlight) and the spider symbol on his back being blue. Didn't stick. For contrast take a look at the title page for two of the other stories in this issue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
@duel1971 : A good amount of ground ground gets covered in this relatively short origin story. We see Peter as a wallflower, a masked wrestler, an inventor, and most importantly as a loving son. These are all facets of the gem that is Peter Parker. He comes across as a relatable everyman because the details of his civilian life are filled in with care. Our first look at peter at home establishes there is a core of love in his home life, that he feels safe there away from the world that doesn’t fully understand him. Peter doesn’t quite transform into a superhero in Amazing Fantasy #15, but we learn the things that drive him: love for his family, and anger that it has been broken.

"Hey, Grumpy Face, what are you doing here all alone?"
Crowley, closing the side door of the Bentley, turned to Nina, who had just called out to him.
He replied in a nonchalant tone, "I'm not doing anything, I'm just going home."
Nina crossed her arms and replied, "You looked grumpier than usual. Is there trouble brewing between you and your bookseller?  "
When Nina looked at him like that, Crowley could never send her packing; they might fight like cats and dogs, but she had a way of seeing right through him, which meant that Crowley always found himself confiding in her.
He leaned back against the Bentley and sighed, "No, everything's fine with Aziraphale, and maybe that's the problem, sometimes I feel like everything's too good. Like I don't deserve this happiness."
Nina nudged his shoulder and replied, "Crowley, where did you learn that happiness has to be earned? When you find happiness, you cherish it and do everything you can to keep it. But that has nothing to do with whether or not you're worthy of it."
Crowley, not entirely convinced, shrugged and muttered, "People like me aren't supposed to end up with someone like Aziraphale."
"Crowley, you're dead wrong. I don't know anything about people like you. But I know you. And even I can see that fate was right to bring you together. You know, when I first came here, I often wondered when I saw him alone in his bookshop, always with a smile on his face, always friendly, never a word higher than the next, is he really happy or is it just an attitude, a way of being? Then he introduced you that day in the coffee shop, and I saw that special smile."
The bookseller, a little hesitant at first, pointed to the red-haired man and said, "This is Crowley."
Then, in a more confident tone, he smiled back, the smile illuminating his entire face, "He and I go back a long way."
Nina continued, "His smile was so different, it had so much more depth, he had a sparkle in his eyes that I'd never seen before. And then with you, I saw him get vindictive, angry, assertive. It was like he was really himself with you. So don't tell me that people like you have nothing to do with people like Aziraphale, because what is certain is that you, Crowley, have everything to do with him, Aziraphale."
She finished her little speech by gently punching him in the chest.
"Are you two fighting again?"
Nina and Crowley turned to Aziraphale, who was smiling at them.
Nina walked over to him and just before crossing the street said, "Go take care of your grumpy boyfriend, at least try to get him to smile for Christmas."
Aziraphale looked surprised and replied, "He smiles a lot with me."
Nina turned to Crowley and, pointing at him, said, "See? That's what I meant."
As she walked toward the coffee shop, Aziraphale came up beside Crowley and said gently, extending his hand, "Shall we walk home together?"
Crowley chuckled softly and said, "You know it's only a few hundred yards to the bookshop?"
Aziraphale, still holding out his hand, replied, "Does that mean you don't want to?"
The demon put his hand in the angel's and replied, "As if you didn't know.
As they began to walk hand in hand toward the bookshop, a gust of winter wind brought them a little closer, and the angel asked softly, "What did Nina mean?"
Crowley replied, tilting his head toward the angel, "Something I knew but needed to be told to remind me."
"Something good?"
Crowley smiled, then kissed the angel's hair before answering, "Something very good."
Aziraphale asked him in an amused tone, "I have a feeling you're not going to tell me any more."
After they entered the bookshop, Crowley turned to the angel and, taking his face between his hands, said gently, "There's nothing more to say that we don't already know."
"And what is that?"
"That we were meant for each other."
The demon leaned over the angel and kissed him tenderly before wrapping his arms around him.
Across the street, through the coffee shop window, Nina had followed them with her gaze and could now see their entwined silhouettes, illuminated by the diffused light of the bookshop's Christmas tree.
As she watched them fondly, she thought that anyone who had been close to them for any length of time could see and feel the strength of the bond they shared.
She felt two arms wrap around her waist and Maggie's voice asked softly, "Scheming again?"
Nina leaned into the warm embrace and shook her head, "No, not at all, I was just thinking that sometimes you get so close to things that you can't see them and that an outside view helps to put things into perspective."
She felt the gentle pressure of a kiss on her hair and Maggie rested her chin on her shoulder before saying softly, "I'm happy for them..."
Then she pressed another kiss to Nina's temple and added, "...and for us."
Nina hummed and said nothing, because sometimes happiness was speechless.

well well well >:3 first things first! in order to avoid retreading things i've already talked about on my blog, my oc content is under #creaturae. there's a lot but it should answer most basic questions about their world and a lot of the characters! secondly- tell me about YOUR ocs! what are their names? what sort of world do they live in? what do they do (jobs, school, etc)?
Your ocs seem really cool!! Special mention to patchwork I really love her :D
*looks at ask* an excuse to ramble? for me? :)
Estella
Estella is a dreamweaver and she lives on Solaera, which is a land suspended in time and space. She’s responsible for braiding the thought threads (it’s a work in progress name ok :P) of humans while they sleep. She’s polite and kind and way too sweet for someone who has to fly miles every night to tie a small thread and zoom back before morning. She’s never spoken to another human because it’s forbidden (until Annalisa, that is). She enjoys sightseeing, and always tries to visit somewhere new in the human realm every time she travels there.
She is the sensitive, emotional one who is primarily driven by her feelings. She can be frivolous, but values her relationships. She also speaks like a Victorian character because everyone on Solaera does :P
Annalisa
Anna is your standard 15-year old human and it shows. She’s 100% done with life (totally not projection lmao). She thought she was free of Shakespeare during the summer holidays but guess what?? Estella’s here :) She finds Estella cowering in a back alley after she gets disgraced and things spiral from there.
She comes off as more standoffish but if you’re her friend, she’ll die for you no questions asked. She cares just as much as everyone else but doesn’t show it. She is often the more realistic side to Estella’s emotions and bubbly attitude. However, she’s quick to anger and can hold a grudge like no one else, so don’t get on her bad side! She’s got a vindictive streak, and if you wrong her, you’ll be on the receiving end.
Aeron
Aeron is the Prince of Nocturne and heir to the throne, though he has no interest in ruling or being king. That isn’t to say he will shirk his duties though. He takes responsibilities very seriously and works hard to uphold them. He appears cold towards everyone, and to some extent, he is. Check out a glimpse into his backstory here! He doesn’t meet Estella and Annalisa until much later in the story, and gets to know them on friendly terms long after that too. He doesn’t do well in social situations and prefers his solitude.
He appears rude and unfeeling when people first talk to him, and it takes him a long time to warm up to people before he can trust them to see him without his ‘ice-prince’ mask. He’s cold but not cruel, and calculating but not manipulative. He’s the rational and mature side to the team, and balances out Estella’s exuberant cheerfulness and Annalisa’s anger with the more logical side of things.
Alyssa
Alyssa is the Princess of Nocturne, but she’s younger than Aeron and so is not the heir. She was born blind, but Aeron doesn’t love her any less for it. Her father, on the other hand, doesn’t believe she will amount to anything in life. She rarely speaks to anyone apart from Aeron because of how cutthroat the Court is towards her, and very little is known about her beyond the castle walls. She is rumored to have the gift of clairvoyance.
She has the unique quality of being calm no matter the situation. Her infinite capacity for patience has earned her the respect of the few who interact with her. She loves Aeron and spends most of her time with him. Aeron has always helped her by enchanting books and other things so that she can also enjoy them. She also loves reading and drawing and can frequently be found in the castle library, laughing over a book. She is the calm, tranquil side to the team, and keeps them all grounded when their their emotions- be it Estella’s sensitivity, Annalisa’s vindictiveness, or Aeron’s icy demeanor- get out of control.

Here's a concept: Yandere!Mammon!
Tumblr media
I've seen Yandere!Levi, both in fanon and in canon concept, and I've seen Yandere!Belphie, watered down because certain western fans were tOo SeNsItIvE to the content or something, and I've seen Yandere!Beel.
I don't believe I've seen a Yandere!Mammon concept, and as much as I love Mammon as he is, I'm also dying over Mammon being especially greedy in ways that bring out the fucking devil in him. He's a demon. He needs to act like one.
MC is back in the human world. Lucifer won't let Mammon go with them, so he uses his crow familiars to report everything they do and anyone that seems too close or "suspicious" with MC gets accordingly taken care of.
Suppose Mammon casts a shadow spell on a crow familiar that is following MC. MC is hanging out with a friend that is too chummy, too handsy. So, Mammon sends out the spell through the crow, and the crow morphs in size and takes on the shadowy figure of an outraged Mammon in demon form behind MC, terrifying the friend away from MC. Eventually isolating MC.
Mammon mighta been forced into a pact with MC, but that doesn't mean he hasn't come to see it as just another link between them. He was their first. No matter the circumstances. He won't give up or break their pact for anything.
Mammon is greedy. He's greedy for MC. He's greedy for their attention, their affection, their time, their life. For the taste of their kisses and skin and rough treatment and love. Any time not spent with or watching over MC is time spent where Mammon isn't focused on whatever needed his attention.
He's murderous, menacing, threatening, intimidating. He can be cruel and destructive. He could curse anyone with terrible luck financially. Any luck a person might find is corrupted into misfortune. Mammon invokes spells of greed that consumes the most sensible people into mindless caricatures of themselves.
He's also defensive, loving, soft-edged, soothing. He's caring and giving. He's incredibly affectionate. He's tender and soft, and despite his hot and cold attitude, you can see all the love and devotion he holds for MC. If MC is involved, all his focus and attention is on them, almost obsessively. Whenever Mammon is particularly generous, and has the Grimm, he'll take MC out on the town and buy anything they fancy or anything he seems might show his possession of MC.
He's definitely clingy, overprotective, jealous, selfish, and sometimes manipulative. He has a tendency to be nosy and invasive. Mammon might seem proprietorial and dominating over MC, but it's because he's insecure and anxious. Despite his loud personality, immaturity, and egotistical sense of pride, Mammon has a soft nature and insecurities of MC preferring his brothers over him.
He's very protective and possessive over MC. If any demons that think they're hot shit or that the human exchange student wandering on their own is easy pickings, they're in for a rude awakening when the second born demon lord confronts them. If Mammon is late to defending his human and sees them injured, he'll only be focused on MC at first, crouching behind them and pulling them into his embrace, his arms wrapped around them, safeguarding them from any more harm, and his wings wrapping around himself and MC as extra shields. Then his concentration shifts from MC as he feels the warmth of their body against him. His eyes are full of malice and contempt, his claws itching to dig into the offender. His blood burns in his veins and his magic is barely contained. He's vengeful and vindictive.
MC isn't unaware to how Mammon is. They're privy to the unsavory parts and, well, obvious demon-like tendencies. They just don't know how deep all those things run. They're right to assume that Mammon is changing from how he initially was. Mammon is straying from just being materialistic and focused on Grimm, and MC does have to do with his changes. It's just that those changes aren't all good and they're still greed-based, just now over MC. MC is affecting how the sin effects Mammon, but the sin is also effecting MC.
Mammon can be a monster. MC can be a bit hostile to negative comments about Mammon. Mammon is willing to kill, and MC willing to risk their very life just to protect Mammon from Lucifer and his punishments. Mammon is obsessed with MC, while MC is bordering being consumed whole by Mammon. Mammon loves MC. MC loves Mammon. Their love just ranges in different areas, and it's definitely a treat to imagine.

Tarot pick a card
What your future spouse thinks of you?
Read before -
I’ll be including some intuitive stuff, just know that it’s general so not every thing is meant for you, take what resonates.
Since perception is a dynamic concept, ill relate this to what they will think of you the first time they meet you, as in after a proper interaction, not just impression.
Midway this just turned into me calling people out. I apologize
Pick an Emerald and let’s get started.-
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pile 1-
They may think you’re super career focussed, and somewhat stubborn in your approach. I’m getting strong Taurus and Capricorn energy here. You may come off as a little snooty or snobbish to people, even though you’re truly not trying to be. Resting bitch face? You may be a perfectionist, or at least come off as such. They type to say “Well, let me do it for you” kinds. Cancer and Capricorn, maybe virgo vibes. This pile is so earth heavy, you guys might be the kind whose looking for stability and chalk out your plans way in advance, but have an issue with really executing the plan.
You may be someone who is always juggling between a gazillion tasks, and always curious to learn about things. They’ll definitely pick up on these inquisitive qualities of yours, as well as often times being all over the place. You may have your head high up in the clouds too, Sagittarius and Pisces? You definitely dilly-dally a lot, for example, you want a fitter body, but aren’t ready to workout, even if you chalked out a whole schedule to follow the night before. You’re often too lost in your thoughts, and this duality of air and earth is super prominent in your first impression here. Drawn to pile 2? Go there too
Lastly intuitive stuff - you may have a “everything will come to me on its own attitude”/ may own a dog/ be a bit traditional/ fond of wearing hats?/ wacky inventions/ green/ maroon/ cowboys/ horses and guns/margaritas/ short height/ intercut a lot with guys/ indulge in drinking / introvert
Pile 2-
Ooh pile 2, if you felt pulled to pile 3 then check that out too. Now coming onto your reading, you may come off as a bit serious and tired. You may be the kind of person who feels the have the burden of the whole damn world on their shoulders, and have forgotten how to be childish again. Moon in Scorpio? You guys may reminisce a lot about the past, and are extremely self conscious of what others think of you. You display this quite clearly. My fellow escapists, is this you? They’ll see those tendencies in you, how you’re so somber and avoid emotional or psychological intimacy. You try to brush things under the carpet and act as if all is good and fine. Where are my Virgo and Aquarius babies?
They’ll see you going through an upheaval at this point. I also feel like people here don’t have great relationships with their parents? They’ll see you bicker a lot, or just having straight up given up. They can alternately also see you as someone to whom their parent’s approval and opinion means a lot. You may be the mother of the group, always consoling people and helping them, but also you have terribly toxic friends? Capricorn and cancer, also pisces babies here. They’ll see this too. You can be incredibly hard on yourself and very anxious, inner turmoil in your head. However you’ll be very private about such matters. Hang on darlings!
Lastly intuitive stuff- hairbands/marmalade/drinking/blue/scissors/knives/grandparents/huts/ relaxing/ blonde/ construction/ hands/ eyebrows/ crockery/ coffee/ gems/ pictureframes/ self victimization/ home chores/ patriarchy/ feminism
Pile 3-
So your person might think you’re full of potential, though a bit indecisive. You have so many different ideas, but you don’t know where to start, and this often leaves you exhausted and uninspired. You might be somewhat hyper active and impatient, you want results and you want them now. Aries and Gemini babies, please reveal yourselves. You’re highly charismatic, and somewhat impulsive. You may rush into things without a well though out plan. You get deeply engrossed in things, sometimes even obsessive over things. You may be extremely into foreign cultures and learning about them too! Aquarius and Sagittarius babies cmon.
You might put on a happy face and brave through things, but ultimately it’s not you. You may bottle up emotions and at times be vindictive. Read a lot of self help book? Maybe you’re into psychology. You may have very clinical feelings, and find it hard to be empathetic. You be be extremely cynical and try to perfect every task, only as far as it concerns you. With other’s you’re always forgiving. Drawn to pile 4? Are you guys into law? My libra babies? They may think you’re really smart, and have a very objective sense of justice. You may be extremely blunt in your approach, no nonsense kinds too. You may be into debating.
Lastly intuitive stuff- books/ kebabs/ grills/ outdoors/cycles/ cooking/ cleaning/ OCD?/ painting/ fizzy drinks/ daydreamer/ Sean Connery?/ converse/ dungarees/ autumn/ meadows/ all bark no bite/ ankle ache
Pile 4-
Eeesh, so many cards flew out. I think I have my chatty bunch here. They’ll firstly instantly see you as their soulmate, however ludicrous it sounds. Things between you will fall into place. They’ll think you’re far too mature for your age and very philosophical. They’ll think you’re extremely charming. My Libras and Pisces babies here. They think you’re juggling too many commitments, and are a bit all over the place. Do you guys have some health issues here? They may pick up on that too! They may however think you’re a bit stingy and materialistic honestly though. You place too much importance on money and status here. You may enjoy the life of comfort, and like to micromanage everything. My Taurians and Leos come out.
They may think you’re extremely practical and don’t take anyone’s shit, if something is not suiting you, you walk out for good. You are keen at identifying issues like this, but sometimes you don’t know when to stop with your personal endeavors. You get too hung up on the time and money or effort you spent, and keep trying to fix things, even beyond repair. Cancer babies, virgo babies, come out. You may be an extremely competitive person, and sometimes cat impulsively, only to regret it later. You may win fights, but at what cost? You be be moody and hold grudges.
Lastly intuitive stuff- gardening/ sun hats/ flowers/ ropes/blue/ dresses/ lace/ thread and scissors/ dog/ ballet/ dancing/ mischief/ feminine/ gingham checks/ heels/plates/ intuition/ confused/ red car/ planes/Scarfs/ Marylin Monroe?
Anywhoo let me know if you guys enjoyed it or have any other suggestions!!

AI, I JUST FINISHED CHAPTER 9! I have so many thoughts about the recent chapter and I am dying to share them with you! You write so well and put so much effort in your works and you deserve to know that your readers see that!
Another amazing ride and despite the news about Y/N's health, it's incredibly satisfying! To see Y/N finally step back and realize that she needs to stand her ground and look after herself the way she's been doing for everyone else is the biggest character development here. I didn't see it coming that the last line would be from Y/N and directed at Gojo! It's a clear line drawn about her characterization at this point and just shows how she's changed. And it's an amazing line that still reflects who she is because it's not necessarily hurtful, it just establishes her new boundaries, and neither is it unreasonable, it's a perfect demand that still keeps the relationship balanced. She could've been petty and asked for him to leave Sera, she could've demanded to move out. But she still chose to honor the marriage, just in her terms this time because now she recognizes that she's as much a part of that marriage as Gojo is and therefore deserves better.
As for the frosty asshole, I was the Gojo sympathizer on your main blog asks and I still stand by everything I said. I still see where Gojo is coming from and why he acts the way he does but after chapter 8, I found that I could no longer sympathize with him. Coming from an emotionally draining background is no excuse to treat anyone else poorly, especially the one person who's actually trying to ease your pain despite being hurt herself. But his biggest flaw as a character was his refusal to admit his mistakes and grow past them. We already know he's self-aware, but he's adamant in keeping his hurtful ways because of his pride and because of his lack of emotional maturity. I know that in the recent chapter he's had a very rude and harsh awakening, but he's yet to prove that he can actually step and put his money where his mouth is. It's good to see that he's stopped listening to Sera and shifting blame to Y/N tho.
Speaking of Sera, just like in my other ask, I also see where she's coming from. It's really skillful how you write flawed characters. She's an antagonist but you still humanize her, some fic writers simply choose to make their antagonists a one-dimensional caricature of a Bad Guy™ to make it easier for the readers to digest but you actually make the effort to write her as more than just a random mistress. She grew up the eldest daughter of a poor family in a bad neighborhood. Her parents are unreliable and her siblings are way too young to help out. So now she shoulders the burden of providing for them and keeping their family afloat. I do believe she's not inherently a bad person, however she is selfish, bitter, vindictive, and lacks self-awareness. This could all be a product of her upbringing but as a grown adult, she can no longer blame her environment for her nasty attitude as she's olf enough to know better. Just like Gojo, she is refusing to change.
I also noticed she self-pities a lot and directs the negativity that stirs towards Y/N because she's the easiest target in her eyes. She hates the rich people who constantly look down on her and seeing as these same people favors Y/N, she sees her as the embodiment of everything she simultaneously hates but wishes she could become. She's a hypocrite. She is obsessing over Y/N's status not only because she's envious, but also because it makes it easier for her to justify how she treats her. She was actually civil with her the first time they met, but that turned sour when she realized just how better she had it. Everything she did in the Bora Bora trip was out of bitterness and envy, not even love for Gojo. Because in this last chapter its basically been confirmed that he doesn't love Gojo for the man he is, but for the man she wants him to be; she is with him because she thinks he's what he needs.
I do feel for her, because she never thought she'd end up the abtagonist of what used to be a fairytale for her. But she needs to realize soon that the moment she agreed to Gojo's marriage to Y/N and stayed while completely aware of his plans to use and discard her, she already made herself the villain. She might think of herself as the victim but it was her who put herself in that position in the first place. She's just misdirecting her frustration on Y/N because she refuses to take accountability much like Gojo used to in the previous chapters.
Anyways, I'm sorry for the long ask! It's just that I didn't get to say much on my previous ask here because I was far too overwhelmed with rage to actually sort my thoughts out! I hope you're well and the new posting schedule is working better for you!

THIS ‼️ hands down your understanding of gojo, yn, and sera’s respective characterization was one of the best things i’ve read. thank u so sooo much for sharing ur thoughts. it’s an honor for me <333

Nesta’s Characterization **Spoilers for ACOSF
Unpopular opinion, but I loved how normal Nesta was as a character and that this book was written about 75% to be about the day to day of Nesta’s life. I’m telling you it gave me Studio Ghibli vibes. Like falling love with everyday life and that routine, but also with this normalcy of magic.
I know a lot of people will not like Nesta not being angry or losing a lot of that fieryness. And at some points I can understand especially near the end. But the end has a lot of problems altogether, so I take that with a grain of salt. I didn’t really think she lost a lot of that cleverness or wittiness or that I give no fucks attitude. She’s always been an I will die for my family and the people I love type of person. Which she shows again as she did in ACOWAR. This is the girl who said “I don’t care about me” in ACOWAR when Feyre was like okay I can take you home if you feel unsafe or whatever. I was not surprised at all that she had such self-hatred. But I do think her personality looks shifted, because it’s Nesta’s POV. I’m frankly glad that we get to see that Nesta is very emotional like Feyre had said in ACOMAF. I don’t know if any of us really thought that her anger for the world and that bitchiness and I don’t mean in a bad way would be her final form when it seemed to have always been a shield for her. She wanted to starve to death, she was pointedly vindictive, like she was not mentally healthy. I’ve written so many analyses of Nesta’s character that I’m glad that I was right lol (Not to toot my own horn-but that do not come for me post--that was me and I was right). Does that mean I like everything with her and the IC? No, not necessarily. At some points I thought some characters were too harsh for a long time and some characters had a problem in the beginning that they didn’t in the end, some of it was too easy, some too hard. I feel like there was a bit of holes in the story, which was my main issue with this book. But Nesta herself was not an issue to me at all.
I loved Nesta’s characterization as being soft but never having the ability or opportunity to show that and being able to show it with those she makes meaningful relationships with. She’s Cassian’s mate the guy who perpetually puts himself down. Like calls to Like guys. They match fire by fire, insult for insult, love for love, and this insecurity equally. I don’t feel that she’s OOC and I don’t think shes any less powerful by being less scared of the world. She was a traumatized person, a survivor of assault, so many things happened to her and it was too much and she needed to learn to live again.
That being said, I love that:
1. She is clumsy at first. Falling down stairs must have hurt but it was funny.
2. She eats a lot and loves cake
3. She’s obsessed with smutty romances
4. She is so out of shape for most of this book and is so sore the entire time. I thought that was funny. Pelaton instructor Cassian FTW
5. She is very curious. She asks so many questions and never shy's away.
6. She’s very caring and sweet but also conniving, because she knows how to manipulate people in soft ways. I don’t know how to word that. But getting the priestesses to fight, Emerie, etc.
7. She likes playing the game and is good at showing people what they want, not showing that things bother her so she’s able to be that seducer, that prize you can never have. (Ie. Eris, Lanthys, etc.)
8. She does not give up and inspires others to not give up. She’s stubborn in that way.
9. She has very good opinions of people, granted she needs to know them first and kind of let her guard down, but once that happens she’s like you’re the best person ever Cassian (paraphrasing). Gwyn and Emerie my best friends forever, so caring and nice. I’m undeserving of all of these people.
10. She’s affectionate--she hugs Azriel, she wants to cuddle after sex lol
11. She’s very open about sex. I really liked that part that she wasn’t ashamed or anything. That she was very like well I want it lol, I wanted it then, I want it now, Cassian is here, we tease each other anyway, why the hell not?
12. I love that she charms almost everything. Fantasia vibes. She made friends with a house.
13. She wants people to believe the best in her. That she’s good. (of course she has to believe this in herself, but she gets there)
14. She’s scared of a lot of things. She’s inexperienced. It’s very normal. She’s got a lot of power she doesn’t know how to use, but despite this, she’ll do what must be done and she almost seems to learn to enjoy it. Like it becomes her.
But anyways, this is just a small list. And these are all things we knew of her, her stubbornness, her love for smut, her care for people that cannot help themselves, her cleverness but they’re shown in a slightly different way from Nesta and Cassian’s POV, and I really liked how Nesta turned out to be.

Dani Clayton and Jamie Taylor: A scene by scene study on the dynamism of a queer romance
by theadventurousdork
Well, here we are! An unnecessarily long essay breaking down Dani and Jamie’s scenes together that I decided to write purely for the fact that they have taken a hold of my queer little heart and haven’t given it back yet. Grab some awful tea or coffee and take a read, if you’d like!
Tumblr media
Episode One
In this episode, we see Dani and Jamie meet for the very first time. This is the beginning of them and their story. It all starts in the kitchen of Bly Manor where a dirt covered Jamie walks in just in time for the residents of Bly to gather for an afternoon lunch.
“The gardener didn’t even introduce herself to the new au pair. She barely acknowledged her at all. Simply treated her as if she’d always been there. The others in the room just assumed they’d already met, which, if she were honest, was how the au pair felt when she first saw the young woman.”
Jamie walks in without even batting an eye to the new guest meanwhile, we see a soft eyed Dani looking over at the gardener with a gaze that gives the audience the first look to the gravitational pull that seems to be set between them. With Dani explaining her belief that she has seen someone on the parapet of the old wing, Jamie’s reaction is cold. She looks down at the table with a hardened look. She looks almost hurt. We learn later on that Jamie was the first adult resident of Bly to find the dead body of Rebecca Jessel floating in the lake of the manor which has probably resulted in trauma for Jamie as she remembers her late friend. With Owen and Hannah also finding the possibility of someone being on the balcony to be slim, the residents carry on with their meal. As the introduction to Jamie’s character, we are able to see her cold and guarded exterior. However, we also see her wit and humor as she comfortably pokes fun at Miles and Flora. The space she takes when she walks into a room isn’t empty for she fills it with her bold personality and Dani immediately takes notice of this yet she doesn’t show any hint of openly acknowledging it.
Episode Two
Episode two sheds a different light on the pairing. This episode gives us the first look at Dani’s trauma and the weight that she’s feeling on her conscience. But first, we see her changing the tide at Bly as she puts Miles and Flora to work in the garden as punishment for locking her in a closet. As Dani and the children pull weeds, a relaxed Hannah and Jamie watch from a distance just as Owen offers them drinks. As the trio sip on their gin and tea, they discuss Dani and how her presence is a nice addition to the grounds of Bly. This is where something I call “testing of the waters: part one” occurs. Jamie asks Owen if he thinks that Dani’s pretty before continuing to poke fun at his inability to answer. Now this seems rude, especially considering Hannah’s negative reaction to it even going as far as to remind her that romances don’t fare well at Bly. However, I feel like Jamie does this purposefully to see if Owen would provide any reaction that would indicate that he would have any intent of pursuing Dani, which he quickly shuts down as he states that he only has eyes for Hannah. Jamie’s choice to do this can boil down to a simple poking of fun or maybe something more in terms of her trying to understand, and maybe even deny, the gravitational pull that she’s feeling towards Dani by deflecting it to Owen.
This episode also offers the first glimpse into Jamie’s humanity and her deeply empathetic nature. As a distressed Dani storms outside in tears after being triggered from seeing her dead ex-fiancé’s glasses, our favorite gardener comes to the rescue with buckets in hand. Now this is probably the first time that Dani has physically seen Edmund’s glasses since she packed them away before leaving Bly which can explain her intense reaction to finding Flora wearing them. The part to highlight about this interaction between Jamie and Dani isn’t the fact that Jamie tries to console her but is the way that she does so. First and foremost, the gardener tries to make au pair laugh. She makes multiple attempts in her dialogue to make Dani crack the slightest smile. Jamie’s dialogue saying, “there we are,” after Dani finally gives into the attempted jokes shows how laughter was Jamie’s initial goal.
“How else do you think I keep all these fucking plants watered? With my endless well of deep inconsolable tears. That’s how. It’s what got me the job in the first place.”
After she accomplishes this, she goes on to relate to Dani by telling her that she cries several times a day in an effort to make Dani feel normal and not alone in her vulnerable state. To see someone as cold and guarded as Jamie admit to something like this quickly humanizes her and puts her in the position of becoming a dynamic character. Finally, Jamie tells the au pair that she’s doing a great job and leaves a smiling Dani to watch her as she leaves. This offers insight to how Jamie doesn’t like seeing people in distress. She radiates a grounding energy and puts it upon herself to ensure that no one feels like they’re in over their head.
Dani is able to return the favor as she finds an angry Jamie kneeled over a massacre of her rose bushes. Jamie’s hotheaded attitude is shown as she wastes no time getting up to confront Miles for cutting her roses before they were ready. The point to highlight in this moment is that Dani hears her out. Dani listens to Jamie’s grievances and not once tells her that she’s overreacting. Dani hasn’t known Jamie for long but she knows the importance of plants to the gardener and she doesn’t give Miles a pass at ruining something that matters so much to her. Having two separate scenes showing that each half of the pair have the power to talk each other down regardless of having known each other long, serves as a taste as what’s to come for their journey together.
Episode Three
Here we see “testing of the waters: part two” as the keepers of Bly watch over a sleeping Miles and Flora by a crackling fireplace. A tired Hannah rests her head on Owen’s shoulder as Dani and Jamie watch from across the room. Jamie goes onto ask Dani if she wishes she were leaning on Owen instead of Hannah and explains how every woman in town fawns over Owen without him even knowing it. This key moment goes hand in hand with Jamie’s testing of the waters in episode 2 when she tests Owen’s potential attraction to Dani to now testing to see if Dani would be interested in Owen. Jamie’s subtle comments allow her to see the odds of Dani liking Owen without risking any awkward interaction that would potentially be too invasive. With Owen being the only man in the house, it’s understandable for Jamie to want to see if Dani would pursue him which in turn would signal that Dani may not be interested in someone like her.
What comes next is what I like to believe is the moment that Jamie begins to fall for Dani and I mean really fall for her. The conversation about love and possession is beautifully done and sets the distinction that will go onto separate Peter and Rebecca from Dani and Jamie. After a vindictive history lesson on the toxicity of Peter and Rebecca’s relationship, Jamie mentions the idea of loving someone versus possessing someone to which Dani replies that she doesn’t believe should be possible. The effect of this is seen on Jamie’s face as she looks at Dani. It’s a face that says that she’s staring at someone who understands. Understands the fragility of love and the thin lines that separate healthy versions of love from toxic ones. It happens in the span of a second but we can see a switch click in Jamie’s mind just before she breaks her gaze. From what we collect of Jamie’s past a few episodes later, we come to understand that she has always been owned. Stemming from a broken home and growing up in the foster care system, Jamie has always been someone else’s possession to claim ownership of but never was truly loved and nurtured. To hear someone finally understand that there’s a distinction between loving someone versus feeling like they have the right of possessing them, must feel like a moment of overdue comfort.
After a restless night due to seeing Edmund’s ghost again, Dani wakes up the following morning to see Jamie asleep on the couch. This scene lasts merely thirty seconds so why make the choice to keep it in? What significance does it really hold? Is there any significance at all? For me, the significance is comfort. I feel like there’s a level of comfort that Dani feels when she realizes that Jamie was just down the stairs as she laid awake the night prior feeling as if she were alone in the depths of her own shadows.
The new day ends in the tragic news that Owen’s mom has passed away. After a sympathetic Hannah sends Owen off and leaves to light a candle for the deceased, the gardener and au pair are left to give their own goodbyes to each other. As Dani voices that she’s glad that Jamie stayed on the grounds throughout the day and the night prior, Jamie agrees and the two share an uninterrupted gaze at one another. Here is where we see Dani’s first advance as she takes hold of Jamie’s hand. Ever so slightly does Jamie latch back before Dani quickly pulls away.
“Who the hell knew?”
Those words leave Jamie’s mouth as a mixture of relief and shock paint her face as she gets into her car. Dani watches her drive away with an expression that reads “did I really do what I think I just did?” This moment is cut short as she turns around to see Edmund’s ghost staring blankly from behind her. Fear overcomes Dani and a scream is let out as Edmund gets sucked backwards by an invisible force. Up until this point, Edmund’s ghost has remained stagnant, either appearing in a reflection or in parts. This extreme motion of getting pulled backward into the manor can be read as a way to reflect the intensity of the emotions that Dani is feeling in that exact moment. The amount of tension that Dani must have felt to muster up the courage to reach for Jamie’s hand must have been extremely intense which in turn would evoke an intense manifestation of Edmund’s ghost.
Episode Four
Episode four is what I call the episode of guilt. In this hour, we delve deeper into Dani’s past and the darkness that she’s been holding in her heart. Dani’s life just before Bly is revealed and we see snippets of her life with Edmund. From childhood best friends to teenage lovers to getting engaged, Dani and Edmund almost seemed like the perfect set up to an 80s romcom. Almost is the key word here as it’s revealed that Dani breaks up with Edmund just before he storms out of their car into the path of an oncoming truck, killing him right in front of her thus revealing why Edmund is haunting her. Flashforward to Bly, Dani has begun to see Edmund’s ghost more and more. His first appearance in the episode is in Dani’s bedroom mirror just as Jamie helps unzip her dress. If it weren’t apparent in the episodes prior, Dani holds an immense amount of guilt. This guilt doesn’t only stem from being the reason why Edmund was killed but also lies in who she is. Edmund’s presence is symbolic for the guilt that Dani feels whenever she is just on the brink of exploring her sexuality. We see that every interaction that Dani has with Edmund’s ghost occurs just after she shares a moment with Jamie. With Jamie being a tangible representation of what Dani desires, her visions of Edmund become more intense and more frequent as her guilt increases.
The episode continues to show Dani experiencing Edmund’s haunting again when Jamie arrives back to the manor after attending Owen’s mom’s funeral. Here we see Dani catching herself staring at Jamie from across the table. When Jamie catches her gaze, Dani retreats to the sink where we see a mixture of nervousness and excitement across Dani’s face as she looks over her shoulder to take one more look. This moment filled with butterflies and yearning is cut short as Edmund’s hands slide across Dani’s hips as she sees him in a reflection which causes her to panic. Edmund’s presence is growing closer and stronger as Dani has begun to navigate her feelings for Jamie.
In a flashback, we get a glimpse into possibly one of the first times that Dani’s internal conflict of her sexuality crosses her mind. As Dani gets a dress fitted, the female tailor makes flirtatious passes at her. We see Dani acknowledge these advances and isn’t opposed to them occurring. The scene switches to a guilt stricken Dani, her eyebrows furrowed above saddened eyes that wander upward to Jamie who’s helping prep the table for dinner. This quick glance up to Jamie holds so much. The internal turmoil that Dani is feeling in this moment is palpable. To think that all of her moments of repression have led up to this. This feeling of wanting. This feeling of yearning. To live openly and authentically as the person she’s always been.
Later that night, the keepers of Bly hold a bonfire to honor those that they’ve lost. A weight can be felt on the four as they remember their late loved ones by the warmth of the fire. The concept of found family lies in the heart of those who find a home at Bly and can be seen through Hannah and Jamie’s odes to the late Rebecca, Dominic, and Charlotte.
“Because from here on in, the shadows get deeper… the nights get longer. We’re heading into the dark and we have to hang onto each other. So, we can only carry so much.”
As they commemorate who they’ve lost, Jamie mentions Dani and how she believes that Dani is the key to getting Miles and Flora back to themselves. A moment of pain rushes across Dani’s face as Jamie states how she believes that Dani is stronger than she thinks. To be in the midst of an internal conflict yet hear how someone believes in your strength can be something so painful to hear as you struggle to believe it yourself. We see Dani in a battle with herself as she fights to live authentically regardless of the guilt she’s carrying.
Eventually, the gardener and the au pair break away from Owen and Hannah to go to the greenhouse. A pivotal moment in the growth of Dani and Jamie’s relationship occurs here when Dani makes the decision to lay everything out on the table for Jamie and finally explain her history with Edmund as well as sometimes seeing his ghost.
“I’ve never told anybody that.”
These words that leave Dani’s mouth are so intimate and so vulnerable. Jamie takes what she’s being dealt and handles it with such a level of care that ensures that Dani knows that she’s being heard and respected. As we’ve seen Jamie talk Dani down from a breakdown in episode 2, we see a parallel here where Jamie takes it upon herself to make Dani laugh in an effort to console her. This moment is cut short as Dani musters the courage to ask the heartbreaking question that allows Jamie to make the decision whether to take or leave Dani and all of her baggage.
“Think I’m crazy?”
The pain in Dani’s face as she asks this shows just how scared she is to be rejected by the one person she wants the most. Without even a hint of hesitation, Jamie reassures her that nothing has changed in her view of Dani’s strength. A wave of relief comes over Dani as she’s hit her tipping point of acting upon the feelings she’s been suppressing all this time. She kisses Jamie and a moment of vulnerability is shown on Jamie’s face as she gets the confirmation that Dani is sure in her decision to do this. This moment is short lived by Edmund’s ghost appearing just behind Jamie, causing Dani to retreat in a panic. This is probably the worst cockblock in the history of cockblocks. Dani quickly retreats as Jamie mirrors her actions and immediately puts her walls back up as embarrassment sinks into them both in different directions. As the pair make it back to Hannah and Owen, Dani is visibly disappointed with how things ended up. Jamie’s comment of “it’s all good” as she guides Owen away from the bonfire shows how she would prefer to move on right away instead of confronting the confusing messages she’s just received from Dani.
The final scene of the episode is what I like to call Dani’s last straw. Dani’s guilt has turned to anger as she makes the decision to confront her own shadows by throwing Edmund’s glasses into the bonfire. Flashbacks of kissing Jamie intercut the scene to really solidify Dani’s desires to move on and be able to freely love her without the burden of her past.
“It’s just you and me then.”
Dani is tired. She’s waited for this moment. She’s finally accepted this part of her and she stares straight into Edmund’s ghost without any more fear. She’s found the strength to move on.
Episode Six
The sponsor of this episode is cement as Dani and Jamie cement their relationship in this hour. The episode begins with Dani’s attempt at reconciliation after the unfortunate cockblock of a certain dead ex-fiancé in episode four. Dani wakes up at the crack of dawn to visit Jamie in her greenhouse. Dani’s entire existence in this moment is ridden with nervousness as she puts on her best “everything is normal” face. Jamie is quick to notice how out of character waking up this early is for Dani to which Dani dismisses. We see that Jamie’s cold and guarded exterior is back and for good reason considering the unfortunate events at the end of her and Dani’s last interaction.  Dani’s eagerness to patch things up puts her through several attempts at getting a reaction out of Jamie, each of which ends up being shut down. First is the gesture of giving Jamie coffee which results in her gently spitting it back into the cup. Next is Dani’s attempt at voicing how lonely she’s been.
“No Owen. No you.”
Dani’s voice drags on a little longer here to emphasize how Jamie’s absence the last few days have created a noticeable emptiness at the manor. Jamie responds with a simple “sometimes people wanna be alone” which seems like her own personal choice. However, Dani finally gets a reaction through Jamie’s icy exterior when she makes her laugh after a terrible attempt at a British accent. This mirrors the other instances prior where Jamie has made the effort to make Dani laugh in order to ease any emotional tension. After the ice has been broken, we see Dani’s first wind of confidence as she asks Jamie out to a boring ol’ date at a boring ol’ pub. We can see relief and a sense of pride strewn across Dani’s face when Jamie catches her drift. This marks the beginning of a fresh start for the two.
The next time we see the pair is in the kitchen as Jamie surprises Dani by coming back to the manor after initially leaving.
“Made it halfway home and I thought ‘rough day, maybe Poppins might fancy a little boredom.’”
Dani’s shocked excitement quickly turns into awkward nervousness as Hannah and Owen wave them away to spend time together. Jamie gently takes Dani’s hand and guides her out of the room. This presents the reaffirmation that Jamie still cares enough to try again with Dani.
The gardener leads the au pair somewhere off on the grounds of Bly to a secret area where moonflowers have bloomed. She explains how difficult they are to grow in England and how fragile their lifespan is.
“That’s a lot of work for a flower that only blooms once.”
“That’s what people feel like to me. Exhaustive effort, very little to show for it.”
“All of them?”
“All of them. Even you. Even me… especially me.”
Jamie’s emphasis on herself shows her insecurity of not being enough after anyone makes the effort to break down her walls and gets to know who she really is. What follows is a tear-jerking speech that gives insight on Jamie’s past and her painful upbringing. From the details of her childhood like growing up in a broken home, being forced into foster care, and serving time in jail, we begin to understand why she puts such a strong, guarded front. The absence of a family unit in her youth and young adulthood has resulted in her feeling like she may be unlovable. Like she might not be worth the effort of loving. Just as Dani did in episode four, this is Jamie laying everything out on the table for Dani to decide whether or not she will take or leave Jamie and all of her baggage. After Jamie finishes her monologue, Dani gets up and doesn’t say a word. She takes hold of Jamie and kisses her. No words can alleviate the pain that Jamie’s endured but the effort of loving her can be a start. Dani pulls away for a brief moment to reveal a relieved Jamie smiling back at her after she has realized that Dani has chosen to accept her for everything that she is.
The next scene they have together is the morning after Dani finally gets her first restful night’s sleep.
“The au pair could not remember that last time she’d slept this well. And she thought perhaps she never had.”
The moment to highlight in this short scene is Dani stopping to look at herself in the mirror. She is finally able to see her truest self without being haunted of guilt. She smiles as she looks at her reflection and to a sleeping Jamie in the bed next to her. She’s finally made peace with herself.
The final Dani and Jamie scene of the episode occurs at the end of the day just as Dani puts Flora to bed. Here we see the purity in the relationship that the two are creating. We see Dani unapologetically long for Jamie as she says she’s going to leave for the night. The au pair’s subtle look at the gardener’s lips as she speaks and the inching closer and closer to her shows just how high Dani’s confidence levels have risen to after being able to finally love freely. To see Dani in such a smitten state of mind is a breath of fresh air for not only herself but for us, the viewers, who have seen her in such a trapped state of mind when it comes to loving someone. The innocence of longing, in tandem of making the promise of spending other nights together, show how much care and caution they are taking in order to ensure that they’re building their relationship in a healthy manner. What they are both experiencing shows a trade off of what they each have to give to the other. Dani has accepted her sexuality, which is something that seems like Jamie has already done long ago. Meanwhile, Jamie is being loved and wanted, potentially for the first time which is something that Dani has already experienced in her past. Each half of the pairing offers support and guidance to the other as they begin their journey as a couple.
Episode Nine
This final episode of the season was an absolute doozy in terms of Dani and Jamie’s relationship. I’ve watched all of these scenes a solid million times over and I bawl my eyes out every. damn. time. But I mopped up my tear-soaked notebook and carried on for the purpose of this essay. The episode picks up action as Flora sacrifices herself to save Dani from being dragged and choked to death by Viola, the Lady of the Lake. As Jamie and Owen arrive back at the manor after both having awful dreams, they briefly see Hannah as she says that they’re needed at the lake. Jamie bolts the second she hears Dani yelling. She knows Dani’s in trouble and wastes absolutely zero time trying to find her. Jamie yells Dani’s name and you can feel that her sense of urgency has one goal in mind: save Dani.
“It’s you. It’s me. It’s Us.”
Viola has accepted the au pair’s offer. Besides Flora, Jamie is the only witness to see Dani’s last moment of belonging to only herself. From this point on, the darkness begins to fester deep within Dani’s soul and Jamie must live knowing that there was nothing that she could do as she watched Dani let part of herself go to let Viola in. Jamie runs into the lake as Dani’s trauma starts almost immediately. Her breathing is quickened, and she can’t stop repeating those final words that she felt deep in her bones. The gardener holds the au pair and takes one look at her as she already notices the effects of trauma. Dani’s darting eyes are panicked as she struggles to register that Jamie is there with her. Her breathing finally slows as Jamie holds her close in her attempts to calm her down. Jamie is Dani’s grounding force in this moment. Dani has finally freed the ghosts of Bly but at the cost of her own self. Her own life for the souls of the others.
The following scene highlights the days following the incident at the lake, immediately starting with Jamie and Owen looking into the well to find Hannah’s dead body. I wanted to highlight this moment just for the sake of Jamie for she has been there to witness all the deaths of her loved ones firsthand. She was the first adult to find Rebecca in the lake, one of the first to find Hannah in the well, and the first to see Dani die in more ways than one. She just can’t seem to catch a break but after all… death is beautiful, it’s natural.
Jamie finds Dani as she packs away her things however, Dani’s mind appears to be somewhere else. Darkness has begun to burrow itself into Dani’s soul. She’s shaking. She’s terrified. She’s mourning the loss of herself.
“I feel her. In here. It’s so quiet, it’s so quiet, but she’s in here. And this part of her that’s in here, it isn’t… peaceful.”
Dani explains how Viola’s presence feels like a beast waiting for her in a thick jungle. She feels hopeless again but this time feels heavier than all the rest. She has something to lose here now. She has a relationship with Jamie to lose, she has an entire life to lose. It isn’t as simple as feeling the guilt of losing someone or the guilt of loving someone. This feeling isn’t human, this feeling of dread goes beyond what the stages of grief entails. Where is she to go if she can’t go within herself to find peace?
“She’s gonna take me.”
A tear falls down Jamie’s face as these heavy words fall out of Dani’s mouth. This is the first hint of Jamie losing Dani. The fear of the inevitable fills the room with such a weight that no words can alleviate Dani’s pain. Yet Jamie tries. She tries her damn best. She offers her company with the seal of a pinky promise. She gives all that she can offer: herself and her love. Dani’s feeling of darkness doesn’t have to be lonely this time.
After a final goodbye to Henry, Miles, and Flora, the gardener and the au pair set off to start their lives together as the image of Bly fades away into the distance. Their life together starts at a diner as Jamie plans their course of action, hoping to end up in Vermont to see snow by Christmas. Here we see Dani looking at her own reflection in the tableside jukebox before stopping Jamie as she worries that they’re planning too far ahead. Dani’s cautious. She doesn’t want to get either of their hopes up.
“One day at a time is fine by me. As long as those days are with you, Poppins. One day at a time is what we’ve got.”
There’s a brightness in these words which in turn reflect onto them. There’s a light in this moment that shows that they haven’t lost their footing yet. And thus begins the final climb to their highest point before the tragedy that lies ahead occurs. We flashforward to a year later to The Leafling, the flower shop that the pair have opened up together. Dani is still Dani and Jamie is still Jamie but more in love this time than the last time and the time before that.
“You see, I’m not sick of you. At all. I’m actually pretty in love with you, it turns out.”
Here we see the reintroduction of the moonflower. The symbol of Jamie and Dani’s love. The last time we saw the moonflower was back when the pair finally made the choice to accept one another and start their relationship. This time, we see the moonflower one last time as Jamie chooses to solidify their love by finally breaking the big L word.
A montage ensues of the gardener and the au pair’s life together. Years have passed and peace was just finally in their grasp. Or so it seemed. This feeling of fluttering innocence is put to a halt as Dani sees Viola’s reflection in the door of the flower shop. Dani stops in her tracks as she stares at the reflection, her face is still as she stands in a quiet shock. That is until she sees Jamie through the door, smiling at her with such a playful gaze. This instance shows yet again that Jamie is Dani’s grounding force even after all this time and Dani’s own reflection returns not even a second later. This is a moment for the audience to take a peek into Jamie’s importance in Dani’s life, especially at a point that something so vengeful is making its way to the surface. To see Jamie’s smiling face cut through the image of the beast in the jungle, we can’t help but feel the same pain yet also the sense of relief that Dani must feel in this moment. Although Dani returns to herself, we can’t help but feel Viola’s presence looming.
The scene that follows is another significant milestone in Dani and Jamie’s journey together as Dani comes back home with a dying plant that’s concealing an engagement ring. Above the surface, Dani has put the ring in a dying plant because she knew that Jamie would waste no time investigating how to save it. But this can also be interpreted in relation to Jamie’s moonflower speech where she says “every living thing grows out of every dying thing” to show how their relationship is taking the next step of growth as she pulls the ring out of a dying plant. The ring itself is a traditional Irish Claddagh ring, which shows how Dani did her research and chose a ring specific to Jamie’s northern heritage. The hands that make the band of the ring represents friendship, while the heart representing love, and the crown representing loyalty. These representations are fitting for the relationship that the pairing has created and for Dani’s proposal speech.
“Here’s the thing - you’re my best friend and the love of my life. And I don’t know how much time we have left but however much it is, I wanna spend it with you.”
The thing to highlight about Dani and Jamie’s relationship is that it runs on Dani’s timeline which is something that is so important to showcase, especially considering how Edmund had made almost all the choices for her in her previous engagement. Jamie understands this and has always insured that Dani felt comfortable before progressing further into their relationship together. In this moment, Jamie finally has a promise of love while Dani has security in the person she loves the most. As Jamie accepts her proposal and the two share a moment of celebration, Dani’s face of worry as she hugs Jamie shows that she feels an inability to be fully happy. She’s unable to fully give herself to Jamie in this moment which in turn shows how Viola’s presence is getting closer and getting darker.
We jump slightly forward in time to the pair visiting Owen’s aptly named restaurant, A Batter Place. After a moment of remembrance for Hannah, Dani looks into the reflection of a metal water pitcher to see Viola’s reflection yet again. Dani’s face is surprised by this sight, but she keeps it quietly to herself as to not ruin the moment of reunion. If we compare this instance to the first time Dani looked at her reflection at the tableside jukebox at the diner years prior, we can see that this moment is filled with much more darkness. The light that used to be inside of her is dimming. Although Jamie is holding her and is physically next to her in this moment, she doesn’t cut through the darkness anymore. Jamie’s power as a grounding force is dimming as well.
“So, they’re all happy?”
The inflection in Dani’s voice here is so subtle that only Jamie takes notice of it. Jamie looks at Dani and senses that something has gone off in her. Owen continues to explain how Miles and Flora have no recollection of the events that took place at Bly. No recollection of the sacrifice that Dani made to save them.
“So, if they don’t remember Hannah…they don’t remember…”
Dani’s voice trails off here. She looks down and is caught in the bitter realization that her sacrifice has been forgotten. This feeling of a looming darkness, this feeling of living a life that’s ticking down to her own demise… was it worth it? Jamie can feel Dani’s pain immediately as her eyes stayed glued on Dani who’s trying to see if there would be any way to remind Miles and Flora about what she did.  The gardener stares at au pair without breaking away and in this instant, we can see that, along with Dani, Jamie is breaking too. Breaking under the burden of knowing that she can’t take Dani’s pain away.
The scene that follows shows Dani washing dishes where she sees Viola again in the water. She panics and finally admits to Jamie that she’s been seeing her more and more. The tension that was present between them moments earlier immediately fades away as Jamie wastes no time in trying to console Dani. Jamie’s blind optimism here has a slight tinge of desperation as she refuses to let Dani slip away into the abyss that’s growing stronger and stronger. Dani’s interaction with Viola’s reflection in this moment sets off an alarm bell within her, unlike the other times where she sat quietly and dealt with it on her own. This is Dani’s tipping point. The highest level of fear is felt as the reality is beginning to sink in that the beast is coming for her. Another thing to note here is that even after all these years, Jamie still makes the conscious effort to make Dani laugh.
“I’ll do the washing up from now on, yeah? You’re shit at it anyway.”
Dani can’t help but give the smallest laugh, but it’s more than enough for Jamie. Through Jamie’s optimism, we have begun to see that she’s not only consoling Dani but also herself as she tries to convince both of them that they can have so much more time together. The episode continues on with the train of heartbreak as Jamie comes home after receiving civil union paperwork for her and Dani. What comes next is what I feel like is the most heartbreaking Dani moment in the entire series. Dani stares deep into an overflowing bathtub where an ominous Viola stares back at her. Jamie is quick to bring Dani back to reality but Dani has lost her footing. Her hold on Viola has flipped to Viola having a hold on her.
“It’s like every day I feel myself fading away, but I’m still here, and… I don’t really understand how that is.”
The fear has withered away into emptiness as Dani struggles to stay afloat. We see Jamie so pained as she watches the light fade into a grey nothingness as she listens to Dani talk about how she is beginning to lose herself to the beast.
“I’m not even scared of her anymore. I just stare at her, and it’s getting harder and harder to see me.”
To listen to the love of her life slip away through her fingers has Jamie in a phase of denial as she continuously refuses to let Dani break apart. We see the gardener’s optimism wavering as she tries her best to help the au pair hold onto herself. Dani’s voice as she says Jamie’s name is filled with nothing but pure hopelessness and despair as she dips further and further into uncertainty. Yet Jamie doesn’t lose hope. Jamie would never give up on Dani as she repeats the words she told Dani in the diner all those years ago.
“One day at a time.”
However, Jamie has run out of answers. She can only offer comfort now.
Next we see Dani hit her lowest low as she is taken over by Viola and awakes to see that she almost strangled Jamie to death in their sleep. Dani is shocked and broken as she sits in the disbelief of what she almost did. The time has come. The beast has arrived. Viola has waited years until Dani was so broken down and so vulnerable, that she would finally be able to take her. However, we can’t help but believe that Dani fought off Viola this long thanks to the love her and Jamie shared.
The gardener wakes up the following morning to find an empty space next to her. She reaches to the empty space in the bed and then for the note left on the bedside table. It can only mean one thing: her biggest fear has come to light. With her strong will and determination, Jamie gives one final push and flies back across the pond to Bly to face what she’s been in fear of all this time. The amount of immense grief that is felt in this moment, to be at the same place that the love of her life began to be taken away from her all those years ago, must be incredibly damaging. The manor holds so much of Jamie’s life. She found her family there. She created a beautiful garden on those grounds. Her and Dani’s love blossomed on the same grounds that she first began to lose her that night at the lake. Jamie storms off to the edge of the water. Her face is so tired. She already knows what she’s going to find and yet she still doesn’t lose the hope that maybe, just maybe, it wouldn’t be true.
“The gardener said the words she’d heard those years ago; she willed it with everything she had. You, me, us. Us. ‘Take me with you,’ she cried in her heart. ‘Take me. Drag me down like you did the others.’ But the lady in the lake was different now – the lady in the lake was also Dani. And Dani wouldn’t. Dani would never.”
The agony and desperation that we see Jamie endure in the moments that we see her find Dani laying at the very bottom of the lake is a type of pain that is unmatched from any other moment of pain that we’ve seen this season. Her muffled screams as she takes a hold of her heart, only to let her arms go in despair under the water is something so haunting yet so unbelievably moving to see her love so much considering how far she’s come from the cold and guarded gardener we saw all the way back in episode one. She would’ve given up everything. Absolutely everything to take Dani’s place. Given up everything to join Dani at the bottom of the lake. Unlike Peter with Rebecca, Dani could never take Jamie down to the depths. Dani could never harm a single soul, let alone the one person that mattered the most to her. By letting Jamie go and taking Viola’s place as the lady of the lake, Dani has broken the cycle of violence that’s haunted the grounds of Bly for centuries. As Jamie was the hero of Dani’s story, Dani will always be the hero to Jamie’s.
The final act of the season ends with an older Jamie finishing her story to the wedding guests.
“She would know nothing of the gardener, nothing of their life together. The details, the specific moments would all fade away. More time will pass, and the water will wash away the delicate features of her; of her beautiful, perfect face. But she won’t be hollow, nor empty. And she won’t pull others to her fate. She will merely walk the grounds of Bly, harmless as a dove, for all of her days. Leaving the only trace of who she once was in the memory of the woman who loved her most.”
We see an older Jamie comfort a teary-eyed Flora who is afraid of the time when she would also lose the love of her life. Jamie comforts her with advice that we can only ever assume she learned in her time with Dani. The final scene shows the gardener’s nightly routine as she stares into reflections, hoping to catch one last glimpse of the au pair. As she drifts away into sleep, a hand wearing a golden wedding ring rests gently on her shoulder. Our haunting love story has come to an end. And the rest? Well the rest… is confetti.

I Melt With You - Bakugou Katsuki
All Parts:
Part 4:
You’re paranoid.
Terribly, terribly paranoid, and even if you’re aware of it, there’s nothing you can do to stop it. Nothing you can do to quell the anxiety that wells up every time another person enters your space. Every time their skin nearly brushes yours, even accidentally, just for a split second.
It’s maddening. Nearly debilitating the way you’re flinching away from people. You can see your co-workers notice too, fellow nurses suddenly giving you odd looks every time you reject a high five. Even when you’re wearing your gloves. It’s just a panic reaction at this point- a fixation on trying to keep your quirk as least exhaustive an experience as it can be.
On one hand, you still really dislike Bakugou- nearly hate him for bringing it up to you- but, on the other hand, he did manage to figure it out. He somehow managed to figure out what you never could, and all in a matter of minutes from your relatively short interactions. It made you think that maybe he could be really smart- if he didn’t spend so much time killing his own brain-cells with every juvenile insult he spewed at you.
You wondered if that was just him, or he really did hate you that much. Surely he couldn’t be that much of a monster to other people, right? Right?
Wrong.
You remember Kirishima, how he apologized for Bakugou nearly the second he walked through the door. It hits you then that you’re definitely not the first person he’d seemed to mercilessly terrorize- you’re not sure if that makes you feel better or worse.
Actually, on second thought, maybe it makes you feel worse. No, it definitely makes you feel worse. So much worse, in fact, that just the sight of his face nearly sends you into an irrational rage. Even now, weeks after the last time he’d personally ruined your day, you were still mad. Still angry. Still cursing every time you saw those red eyes on every billboard, newspaper, and billboard in town.
Well, lucky for you, you didn’t have to look at those printed eyes anymore. Not when the real ones were right in front of you- scaring you shitless as you leave the hospital.
You had left the hospital from the back exit, tired and crabby from your late shift, grumbling as you stepped out into the alleyway. You’d hardly seen him, just the slightest glimpse of movement behind the tall dumpsters, before he’s practically in your face.
“Jesus!” You gasp, curling your arms around your stomach. Your legs feel like jelly. “Don’t do that! Scared me half to death!”
“Oh, chill the hell out, ya fuckin’ baby. You’re fine.” Bakugou rolls his eyes, falling into step next to you.
He looks worse for the wear, just like every other time you’ve seen him, exhaustion coloring his complexion something sickly. There’s an angry purple bruise covering his cheek, a few cuts, and even more bruising dotting his scarred knuckles. A tiny, vindictive part of you thinks it serves him right, but you keep it to yourself. You’re better than that.
You want to be nice to him, truly you do, but he’s made it pretty hard. Concerning you, Bakugou’s pretty much dug his grave at this point, and he only makes it worse with his next works.
“You need to do something for me.” He orders suddenly. “Now.”
“A-are you asking me? For help? Is that what this is?”
“What? No- obviously fucking not.” He sneers, nostrils flaring. “Why the hell would I go and do something like that. That’s stupid. Weak.”
“Oh. Okay. So then two seconds ago, when you were telling me that I ‘need’ to do something for you, what was that?” You squint your eyes at him, eyebrow twitching with annoyance. “That wasn’t you asking for help?”
“No. ‘s an order.”
“Oh. Yeah. Okay- an order. Because you’re totally in a position to make those.”
“I am.”
“You’re not.” You spin on your heels, nearly crashing into his chest since he followed so closely behind you. Still, you figure the promixity is all the better for gesturing, so you don’t miss a beat, waving your hands emphatically. “My shift just ended, alright? That means I’m not on the clock, and you’re not a patient. I don’t have to suck it up and help you unless I want to. Understand?”
Bakugou seems to bristle at your tone, eyes narrowing as his lip curls. You just try to shrug it off. If he wants to be mad in the middle of the alley, fine- but you’ve had a long day and you’re going home. You spin around again, walking briskly into the street, and it takes him a few moments to catch up.
“I told you, Bakugou, I’m not helping you just because you tried to order me to.”
“I know.”
“Then what’re you doing?”
“Walking.”
It’s his tone; that same needling, challenging edge to it that has your blood boiling. If anyone else said that, you’d probably believe it. But he’s not just walking and Bakugou’s smirk makes that very clear.
“No. You’re following me.”
“Same fuckin’ direction. Sue me, leech.”
The street lamps cast spots that yellow out his already pale skin, and the longer you walk the more withered he looks. Bakugou seems utterly burnt out, and when you look really close, all his features are slumped. It’s a stark contrast to Dynamite’s turbo-charged public persona, and it makes you wonder why he’d even let you see him like this at all. You figure whatever it is must be making him pretty desperate.
Suddenly that same, sinking, sympathetic feeling has you letting up a bit. You slow your pace, catching his gaze as you internally curse your own soft heart.
“Okay. Fine. What’s up. What can I help you with?”
Bakugou squints his eyes, almost like he doesn’t believe you. You think that’s a little fair- most times, even you can hardly believe all that you’re capable of forgiving.
“Sleep.” He finally says, bitten out tightly under his breath.
“You want me to help you sleep?”
“Yes. Obviously.”
“Not obvious.”
“Would be if you weren’t such a shitty nurse.”
“If that’s supposed to be a dig- save it.” You roll your eyes, trying to tamper down the irritation. “I did notice. That you look tired. Just didn’t mention it out of kindness, so don’t think you can start bringing my skills into question.”
You turn down another side street, and Bakugou follows. There’s less light so you miss the way his eyes scan the lurking shadows; intense and immediate, like a habit he can’t help himself from indulging in.
“You really live around here?” He suddenly asks, voice low and gruff.
“Yep. In the apartment complexes just up there.” You point off into the distance. “Why-”
“And your shift always end this late?”
“Yes?”
“God,” He laughs something disbelieving under his breath, rolling his eyes at you. “I was fuckin’ right. You really are the stupidest goddamn person walking the planet.”
“That’s- Do you ever think about your words? Seriously!” You huff, curling your fists. You hope it’ll quell your sudden urge to hit him. “Just because you think it, doesn’t mean you should say it! And who the hell are you to judge anyway-”
“You’re fuckin’ asking to be attacked. That’s stupid. ”
“By who?”
“Weirdos, idiot.”
“You’re the weirdo! You’re the one following me home right now!”
“I’m not following you-”
“Really? You’re not? Because right now, the way you’re walking? Maybe all of two steps behind me? On a dark street? At night? Sort of seems like creepy following is exactly what you’re doing!”
“I told you, you need to do something for me. Not leaving till you do.” He grumbles, digging a bruised knuckle into his temples. “And keep it the fuck down. Your screaming sounds like a dying animal.”
“My-” You seethe for a moment, hardly able to stand his attitude. Then you take a breath because you prided yourself on being a kind person, and kind people do not kill national heroes- even when they’re being asses. “You know, it is almost unbelievable how bad you are at asking for help.”
“Told ya, already. ‘m not fuckin’ asking for help.”
“Then why are you even here bothering me? Go bother someone else!”
“If fuckin’ anyone else could do anythin’, believe me, I’d go to them instead.”
“God, do you even understand how rude that is?” You ask him incredulously, hand grasping at the door to your apartment building. “No, seriously, are you even aware of what you sound like to other people?”
“Not my fuckin’ problem that other people are sensitive.”
Your eyes bulge at that, mouth nearly dropping in disbelief. You couldn’t believe him. You just couldn’t believe that a single person could possibly go through life with that callous of a mentality. It was insanity. Pure insanity.
“So, leech, you gonna put me to fuckin’ sleep or not?”
Just kidding- that was insanity. That sentence alone was proof of just how ridiculous your life had gotten since he’d crash landed into it.
Bakugou seems to realize his words simultaneously, his cheeks flushing red under the outdoor lights. You almost laugh, but then he’s glaring, eyes sternly set and murderous. For a moment, you really believe he was gonna blow you up right where you were standing.
“Say a goddamn word. Do it. I fuckin’ dare you. Leech.” He sneers. “Try me.”
“At this hour? No, uh, no thanks.”
Bakugou does seem to relax at your joke, albeit begrudgingly. He drops his shoulders, rolling his eyes, and clears his throat. “Now, seriously, you gonna fuckin’ do it or not?”
A part of you wants to say no- to hold your gift over his head, to lord it just out of reach until he figures out how to not insult you with every breath. Then you think of your job, of all the civilians who come in swearing up and down that Dynamite was a hero. And you believe them, truly, but you think that Bakugou has a long way to go. An especially long way.
But, even so, your fingers are itching again in your gloves. There’s that urge coursing through your veins, your thoughts a constant loop of heal, help, save and so it’s decided. Quickly. Almost like it was never even a question in the first place- and, knowing yourself, you suppose it never really was.
“Fine. I will. On one condition.”
“Condition? When the fuck did I say it was a negotiation. It’s not.”
“It is and I’ll tell you why.” You spin to face him completely, jumping back when you find him much closer than expected. Your retreat till your back hits the door, but you feel no less cramped than before. “You need me. You do. Don’t bother denying it because you wouldn’t be here otherwise. And the funny thing is, I would’ve done it! Would’ve done it entirely free of charge if you just asked nicely, and-”
“Will you get to the fuckin’ point already?”
“See! That! That’s why there’s a condition! Because you’re needlessly rude! All the time from what I’ve seen. And that’s got to change. Especially if you’re gonna ask for my help more than just this one time.”
“God- how many fuckin’ times do I need to make this clear to you? Hah?” Bakugou growls, leaning in even more. You can see it in his wild eyes- he’s trying to scare you, crowding you against the door. “I’m not asking. I’m telling you- You don’t make the fuckin’ rules here.”
“In this I do.” You swallow nervously, trying not to let your intimidation show. “So you’re gonna listen. My condition is this- if you want me to help you, then you have to learn to play nice. That means no names, no insults, no threats, no complaints, and no attitude. That’s the deal. Take it or leave it.”
Bakugou swears under his breath, eyes blazing as he holds his stare. Truthfully, it makes you nervous, but you’re not one to back down. At least, not when there’s no threat of job loss involved. So you just squint back at him, jutting your jaw out in defiance. There’s a tense few seconds of silence, his eyes searching, but then he backs off. Nostrils flaring like a bull, Bakugou relents.
“Fuckin’ fine. Whatever. Jesus.” He swears, hand curling into a fist at his side. “If you’re gonna be such a bitc-”
“I said, no names, Bakugou.”
He just rolls his eyes, face so very pinched, and you briefly wonder if he’s going to explode. There’s anger as he suddenly shoves you away from the door, yanking it open and letting himself into the building. Then he’s stomping through the lobby, and you’re hardly able to catch up by the time Bakugou stops in front of the elevator.
“What fuckin’ floor, leech?”
“Once again, I said no names. None. Especially not that one.” You tell him sternly, trying to keep your voice down. “And you didn’t agree. You’re not following me and I’m not helping you unless you agree.”
If possible, you think Bakugou’s expression grows even more irritated, his eyes widening as he sets his jaw. Another few seconds pass, and when he sees you won’t relent, Bakugou nods. It’s tight and strained, stunted like the acquiescence physically pains him.
“God, you’re lucky I’m nice.” You tell him, nearly stabbing the elevator button as you press it. “Really lucky.”
“And you’re lucky I don’t have enough energy to beat the shit out of you right now.”
“No threats, Bakugou. You agreed.” You say easily, stepping into the elevator as it opens.
“Had to. Because your fuckin’ terms are bullshit.”
“Hey, no complaints. You agreed to that too.”
You think you hear something strangled leave his mouth, but it’s swallowed up by the sound of the elevator ascending.
Now that you’re standing in better lighting, you can see Bakugou’s face clearly. He looked bad before, but he looks worse now. There wasn’t just one bruise on his face, there was multiple- his jaw colored burgundy and his nose and lip split open. There was no blood, but there wasn’t a lot of scabbing either. It was new. These injuries were new.
You think back to that first visit- when he told you he never really got hurt. You wonder what’s been going so wrong for him lately. It seemed like all he’d done since you’d met him was get hurt.
“Stop fuckin’ staring.”
“I-I’m not. Not like that.” You say. “I’m assessing. You’re gonna need a butterfly bandage, on your nose- skin moves too much. And a cold compress for your jaw. Maybe some disinfectant on your lip. Probably should get your knuckles wrapped too and-”
“Jesus, I fuckin’ get it.”
You roll your eyes, ready to retort, but then the elevator dings. You walk out into the hallway, Bakugou trailing behind you like a shadow. It’s not until you’re at your door, twisting your key into the lock, that you pause.
You’re about to enter your apartment, with Bakugou of all people. A guy you’re not even sure can tolerate you. And yet you’re doing it- because he needs help. Because he looks like walking death and you’ve got a first aid kit under your bathroom sink. Because he’s pretty much proved himself to be an irredeemable asshole, but yet you still can’t bring yourself to leave him out in the cold.
Because you’re an empath, and that, by default, makes you an idiot.
You turn the key. Bakugou, to his credit, looks a little uneasy, but then you’re waving him through the door, and pushing it shut behind him.
“So, you wait here.” You gesture towards your couch, moving aside a few pillows to make him room to sit. “I’m gonna go get all that stuff I talked about.”
“So, what, you’re just like playing fuckin’ nice nurse again, now?”
“Bakugou. No attitude please- I am nice, okay? All the time. Or, at least when others are nice to me.” You say, levelling him with an unimpressed look. “And even if they’re not, I still don’t like seeing them hurt. Not if I can do something about it.”
“I don’t want your fuckin’ help.”
“No, but you need it. And since you’re too stubborn to ask for it, I’m just gonna have to force it on you.”
“Do you even fuckin’ hear yourself?” Bakugou prickles, voice rising. “Acting like a goddamn savior. Like you’re so fuckin’ good and holy. It’s bullshit.”
“It’s not.” You say flatly. Then you’re pivoting on your heels, leaving him behind and you grab the first aid kit. You open the bathroom door, calling over your shoulder. “And if you have such a problem with it, then leave. Nobody is keeping you here.”
You hear Bakugou swear again, so angry and seething that you almost believe he’ll take you up on your offer; but then you hear footsteps across the floor, the creaking of your couch.
You reach under your sink, pulling out the kit and a few extra rags for a compress. When you look in the mirror there’s exhaustion lacing your features, your eyes worn and dark with bags. The sight makes a part of you want to forget it all- makes you want to surrender to the ache in your bones and tell him to leave; but that’s just a small part. The larger part is telling you that you’re not spent until you’re unconscious, and that right now, Bakugou looks a whole lot worse than you feel. It’s telling you to hurry up and help him and you agree.
When you walk back out, supplies in hand, Bakugou’s slumped on your couch. He’s got his head tilted over the back, one hand resting on his stomach and the other thrown over his eyes. He shifts at the sound of your approach, dropping his hand and as blinks blearily. You think his eyes look a little duller than before- less like raging wildfire and more like smothered embers. If you didn’t know any better it would look like begruding acceptance- but this was Bakugou, and you knew better.
“So,” You start, setting all of your things down on the couch next to him. “You wanna go to sleep now? Or wait until after I fix up pretty much the entirety of your face?”
He looks at you unsurely, eyebrows creasing.
“Wait, actually- how are you planning to get home?” You continue, hands on your hips. “Where do you even live? Around here? Close? Because you were out in like, 10 minutes, maybe, the last time I touched you, so it’s gotta be close. You live close right? Because-”
“God, cool it with the fuckin’ word vomit. Shit’s annoying. Shut up.” He grumbles. “I’m sleeping here.”
“Who decided? You?”
“Yeah. Obviously.”
“Bakugou.” You balk, striding closer to the back of your couch. You lean over him, forcing him meet your eyes. “This is what I’m talking about! With the learning to play nice thing! I would’ve let you stay here, I would’ve, had you asked. You can’t just bulldoze your way into my house and refuse to leave!”
“Yeah? ‘n just what the fuck are you gonna do about it if I do?” He scoffs, curling his lip as he snarls. “Nothing. Because you’re so fuckin’ nice, right?”
“Don’t say it like that. It’s not a bad trait and I won’t have you insulting it. I’m not embarrassed of who I am.” You try to work through your frustration, centering yourself with a deep breath. “Look, bottom line is, ask next time. Or I’m not helping you until you do.”
“Fine. Whatever.”
You try to shrug off his petulant response, taking another calming breath as you shuck off your gloves. You replace them with latex ones from the kit, pulling the material over your fingers as you grab the antiseptic wipes. You decide to start around the cut on his nose. It’s the largest and widest, spanning over the entirety of his bridge and into his right cheek. It’s a nasty thing, deep and red, all exposed nerves beneath a thin scab and you can tell it hurts him. Bakugou fights to keep from wincing, eyes scrunching slightly as you wipe the remnants of dirt and oil from his skin.
“This from another villan?” You ask calmly, finding an easy peace in performing familiar tasks. “One today?”
“Cuts are from today. Bruises were yesterday.”
Blinking down at him, you’re a little surprised by how easy his answer was. You expected him to fight, to be difficult just because he could, but Bakugou wasn’t doing that. He was lying relatively and still and sated under your fingertips, the only sign of any tension are his minutely pinched eyebrows. Briefly, you check your gloves- for a moment there you were sure you’d accidentally touched him.
“Oh. Okay.” You reply, taking a small butterfly bandage from your kit. You press it over the cut with gentle pressure. “How’s the other guy look?”
“Fuckin’ terrible. Beat ‘em to hell.”
“I’m sure you did.” You snort, moving on to clean the cut on his lip. “Hey, you wanna know something?”
Bakugou peeks a red eye open, studying your face above him. He nods.
“I actually end up treating a lot of your victims, you know.”
“Criminals. Not victims.”
“Mhm. Sure. Well, either way, they’re always covered in burns. Mostly minor, but sometimes pretty nasty ones.” You try to keep your voice light, even and steady as you dab at his lip. “Honestly, at this point, I’m pretty sure you’re entirely responsible for the hospital’s chronic burn-cream shortage.”
Bakugou does seem to smile at that, exhaling through his nose as his eyes flutter briefly. “Wouldn’t be fuckin’ short if people just stopped tryin’ to pull stupid shit all the time. ‘s not my fault they’re so fuckin’ bad at running away.”
“Bakugou.” You balk, unable to keep the laugh from bubbling out your lips. “You can’t say that!’
“Why the fuck not? Hah? It’s true.”
“Because! You’re supposed to be playing nice, remember?”
“Yeah. To you.” He mumbles, voice rough and raspy. “Because you fuckin’ schemed your way into forcing me. They didn’t.”
“Okay- First, I’m like, pretty sure schemed and forced are the same thing, so we definitely don’t need to say them both. It’s just overkill. Second, that’s a borderline insult, so I’m gonna need you to watch your mouth. And third,” You cradle his jaw in your fingers, turning it to the side. “How the hell did you manage to get a bruise behind your ear?”
“I don’t know- probably the same way you somehow managed to become a nurse; even with such shitty fuckin’ bedside manner. You suck, leech.”
Your jaw drops.
“Bakugou!”
He cracks his eyes open, something small and pleased settling at the corner of his mouth. There’s almost as much venom in his voice as before but his eyes are softer now. They’re kinder, crinkling just slightly at the edges.
He’s joking. You realize. He doesn’t actually mean it. Not this time.
“You dick.” You reprimand, flicking his hairline lightly. “You absolute dick.”
His eyes just seem to grow a little brighter at that, just for a second, and then he’s shutting them again. There’s still a smirk on his face though- one you’d swear you’d slap off if he wasn’t actually being somewhat pleasant right now. For once in his life, it seemed.
“Alright,” You announce, rounding the couch quickly. “Your knuckles look just as bad so give ‘em.”
“No thanks.”
“It wasn’t really a suggestion.”
“I don’t need anymore of your pity help, leech.”
“It’s not pity. Not even a little bit.” You sigh. “Look, I know you’re not gonna understand this, but I seriously cannot chill the hell out without at least trying to take care of people. My quirk makes my fingers literally itch when I see injuries. They itch and they don’t stop itching until I do something about it. Helping people, healing people, is hard-wired into me- it’s as much something I do for me as it is something I do for others.”
Bakugou’s eyes widen at that. He sits a little straighter, fists clenching as he presses them into the cushions. A few beats pass and then he’s grumbling, throwing himself back as he thrusts both of his injured knuckles forward.
“God, you’re so fucking irritating.” He gripes. “If you’re gonna be such a weirdo about it, then get the hell to it already.”
You resist the urge to roll your eyes, instead kneeling next to your coffee table and settling on the ground. You take his hands in yours, bending all his fingers to make sure nothing is broken. When nothing is, you look up at Bakugou, planning to tell him the good news, but he’s already looking at you. Your eyes meet, and he blinks, once, twice, before averting his eyes quickly. You think that maybe he blushes too, but he turns his head so sharply you’re almost convinced you imagined it.
You just try to shrug it off, focusing your attention back on his hands. You notice how warm they are again, nearly feverish and strangely unblemished. When you start rubbing bruise cream over knuckles, kneading the joints between your fingers, Bakugou sighs slumps back into the couch. He closes his eyes once more.
“Are you falling asleep?”
“No. Can’t. Fuckin’ told ya already.”
“Yeah, but you didn’t tell me why.” You set his hands back on the couch, moving instead to unravel a bandage. “Not that I won’t help you, but have you tried any other remedies? Melatonin? Or lavender? Maybe chamomile? Any of those?”
“Mhm. Falling asleep isn’t the problem.”
“Then what is?”
He opens his eyes, squinting at you from above. “None of your fuckin’ business.”
“Bakugou, I’m trying to help here.”
“I don’t want-”
“Yeah. I know. You don’t want it. Or you don’t want to rely on it. I get it. But you wouldn’t have even came here if you didn’t absolutely need it, right?” You insist, grabbing his hands into yours again. “God, you know, I’ve had toddlers who were more cooperative than you. Why’re you so difficult?”
“I’m not fuckin’ difficult.”
“No. You’re difficult. Very difficult.”
“And you’re fuckin’ annoying. Do me a favor and go back to being nice.”
“Nope. Sorry. Pretty sure you didn’t like me then either.” You start wrapping the bandage around his knuckles, taking extra care to apply the right pressure. “And I was only nice to you because I was working, you know. I’m only actually nice to the people who deserve it.”
Bakugou rolls his eyes at that.
You finish wrapping the bandage, securing it into place with a bit of medical adhesive. All things considered, Bakugou looks better than before. Or at least, better than the death incarnate he’d been portraying himself as.
“All done.” You smile, turning away to start packing up your supplies.
“Finally. Took ya fuckin’ long enough.”
“God, you are literally devoid of manners, aren’t you?”
“Yeah. ‘s part of not bein’ an absolute bitch.”
You gawk, spinning around to face him. Bakugou’s relaxed into your couch, arms laid across the back leisurely as he smiles. There’s that same softness to his eyes from before, the crinkling just at the edges.
“Wow.” You scoff, smiling sarcastically. “You really think you’re so funny don’t you?”
“I do.”
“Well, I don’t.”
“Yeah. Because you’re fuckin’ brainless.”
“Brainless? Me? Swear to god, you only know, like, three words and all of them are probably swears!”
Bakugou just shrugs, looking abnormally pleased. Content even. You figure that’s probably right for someone like him- only happy when everyone around him is devolving into chaos.
“Actually, you know what, I think I’m done yelling for the night.” You say, shucking your gloves off. You wiggle your fingers at him, a smirk plastered across your face. “I think it’s time you’re euthanized, don’t you?”
Bakugou just blinks, minutely shrinking away from you.
“Because you said you wanted me to put you to sleep, right? To put you down. Like a dog.” You continue, nearing him, coming close even as his lip curls up. Bakugou is glaring fully now, fists clenched, and you stop just a few inches out of his reach. “Or, you know, in ruder terms- not a dog, but a bitch.”
Bakugou snarls, lunging at you as you duck away. He’s fast but you’re faster, vaulting behind your couch to create some distance. There’s fire in his eyes, blazing and hot in his irises, but it isn’t scary. If you look close enough, you’re almost sure it’s just warmth. That same rare amusement from earlier.
“You leech. Swear to fuck I’ll make you regret that. Say your goddamn prayers!”
“Touch me and you’ll fall asleep!” You tease. “Or I’ll use my quirk and see into your brain. So I guess it’s more of a ‘pick your poison’ for you, really.”
“It’ll be the same for you.” Bakugou growls, hands grasping the back of the couch as he leans in towards you. “Open casket or closed, it’s still gonna be your fuckin’ funeral.”
“Really?”
“Really. Leech.”
“No thanks.”
“What the fuck do you mean ‘no thanks’,” Bakugou mimics your voice, his features twisting. “I’m killing you. You’re dead. You don’t get a choice.”
“No, I really think I do.”
“And just what the fuck makes you so goddamn confident?”
“This. You not attacking me.” You smile easily, voice daring as you stare right back at him. “If you really wanted me dead, I’d be dead. Isn’t that right, Dynamite?”
The name sends Bakugou recoiling, shrinking backwards and scoffing in outright shock. You watch him stumble, legs hitting your coffee table and nearly causing him to fold. He recovers quickly though, albeit with his cheeks flushing wildly.
“Shut the fuck up.”
“Nah. Thanks for the offer though.” You smile brightly, before throwing your arms above your head and yawning widely. “As fun as that was, I’m pretty tired. You ready to fall asleep, yet?”
“Jesus fuck, yes. That’s the entire goddamn reason I’m even here. Idiot.”
“No name calling. You agreed.”
“I didn’t agree to shit.”
“You did.” You affirm. “Now, c’mon, like last time, hold your hand out.”
With surprisingly little dramatics or resistance, Bakugou listens. He thrusts one of his bandaged hands forward as he sits on the couch again. When you touch his fingers, you feel that faint warmth again. Like fire and embers coursing through your bloodstream. It’s uncomfortable, a relentless sensation that has you cringing. You briefly wonder what it would be like to always live with it. Like Bakugou seems to.
His eyes flutter shut just like last time, and you can see the way he staggers. It’s like the fight leaves him entirely, and then he’s falling boneless into the couch. You can hardly place a pillow onto the cushions before he’s driving his head into it.
“Jesus,” You mutter in disbelief. “How long has it been since you slept? You look dead.”
“Weeks.” Bakugou mumbles.
“Since the last time?”
“Mhm.”
If his words alone didn’t confirm the severity of his sleeplessness for you, his response time did. Bakugou answered quickly, without fight, like he’d been wanting to spill for the entire night. And, you suppose, maybe he did; or was trying to. In hindsight, you begin to realize a lot of his screaming could just as easily have read as cries for help- not that you’d ever tell him that. You’d probably have to prepare a will if you ever tried telling him that.
“You want a blanket?” You ask a little unsurely, not exactly confident in your approach to this entirely different Bakugou. “All you’re getting is the couch, but I could probably scrounge up a few blankets.”
Bakugou doesn’t respond. All you hear in response are tiny little snores and slow breathing.
You find it reminds you of the last time- the way you’re reaching into a cupboard and grabbing out a blanket for him. Except this time, it’s a little bit different. Somehow you’re settling the blanket over him with a little bit of genuine kindness instead of begrudging sympathy.
After all, you can’t help but feel a little bit of pity- no one would ever fall asleep that fast unless they really needed it. Especially not in a stranger’s house.

the many faces of tom riddle, part 3
-everyone’s favorite, for a reason: motive, means, and opportunity-
FULL DISCLAIMER THAT THIS IS JUST MY OPINION OF A CHARACTER WHO DOESN’T HAVE THE STRONGEST CANON CHARACTERIZATION, AND THUS ALL THIS IS BASED ON MY CONCEPTUALIZATION.
I didn’t have to introduce him in the first line, because you all know i’m talking about Christian Coulson, aka the fandom’s darling.
Just to get this out of the way, I’m going to come out and say it. His portrayal was brilliant; exactly how i imagined it when reading the books. He captured the way Tom slips from charming and innocent to vicious and vindictive in an instant. In fact, I don’t think I can find much to complain about. Coulson is Tom Riddle.
Tom Riddle's 'mask'
Here's Slughorn's impression of Tom Riddle as a student (it's only in the movies, but I like it):
I... of course, it's only natural you should want to know more. But I'm afraid I must disappoint you, Harry. When I first met young Mr. Riddle, he was a quiet, albeit brilliant boy committed to becoming a first-rate wizard. Not unlike others I've known. Not unlike yourself, in fact. If the monster existed, it was buried deep within.
Tumblr media
The very first time we meet Tom Riddle in the diary, again, it’s from Harry’s perspective. Everything is in this soft, old-timey sepia tone, which tells us it’s a long time ago, but also softens Tom Riddle. So, when Harry (who, again, is the POV character) sees him framing Hagrid, we think, yes, we should trust Tom Riddle.
This mask of good behaviour is what keeps Tom safe, and when it starts to slip, he becomes vulnerable.
Just look at how sincere Coulson looks while he’s framing Hagrid. The concerned (drawn in) eyebrows, the sad head-tilt... I don’t think there’s much I can say, because that scene just pretty much speaks for itself.
How can Harry (and the audience) not fall for it? And in the same way, everyone but Dumbledore (who met him before Hogwarts) is completely taken in.
And while I could wax poetic about the brilliant filmography all through this scene, I want to talk about something else. To drag up that Jung quote from Part 2 -- “I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become...”
Tumblr media
How did Tom Riddle choose to become Lord Voldemort?
In Philosopher’s Stone, we get a particularly insightful quote from the character himself, which is as much as we get in terms of a moral code:
“There is no good and evil, there is only power and those too weak to seek it.”
Some quick definitions on the distinction between right/good and wrong/evil: Right things are obligatory; good things are worth doing. Wrong things must be avoided, evil things are of negative value. (Okay, evil is a hand-wave-y topic and some people think wrong is the same as evil, or perhaps we should do away with the concept of evil, more on it here. But I don’t think Tom’s claim here is him trying to make a point or engage in a philosophical debate with Harry about the difficulty of distinguishing evil versus good or evil versus wrong in a hypothetical sense, and rather that he wants to liberate himself from moral responsibility altogether.) Everything Tom Riddle has done up to the events of June 13, 1943, is, well... eh. He hung Billy’s rabbit -- yes, pretty vindictive and worrying behaviour, but it’s a rabbit and Tom was eleven years old at most at the time. We also hear from Mrs. Cole that he might have traumatized Dennis and Amy in the infamous Cave, and the possibility of something nefarious going on there is supported by the fact that he later chose it as a hiding place for one of his Horcruxes.
However, none of this is confirmed, Mrs. Cole is possibly an unreliable narrator, we can go back-and-forth on this, we don’t know what exactly went on, and even if both of these incidents occurred, I don’t think that’s enough to put Tom firmly on the Path To Evil (TM)... What’s interesting about Diary Tom Riddle, is that he does believe in good. In fact, if I had to come up with one word to describe his attitude in this scene, Coulson comes across as righteous. This doesn't feel like an indulgent, Joker-esque revel in evil.
Adult Tom doesn't really act this way towards Harry; he just thinks he's smart and all-powerful, and Harry is beneath him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His entire purpose for existing is to "lead another to finish Salazar Slytherin's noble work."
He speaks to Harry almost with contempt, because he's obviously in the right. And this is pretty funny, because adult Tom really doesn't care about right and wrong or good and evil in the first place, while his teenage self struts around the Chamber, pretending to have the moral high ground. I think Coulson did a really great job on portraying the sheer hubris of a Tom Riddle who has just dipped his toes into true evil, and perhaps doesn't even realise it.
Emphasis on the noble. A noble thing is worth doing; a thing worth doing is good. Ergo, Diary Tom believes in the concept of good (and perhaps, by extension, evil). In fact, this is the last time we will hear ‘moral duty’ reasoning out of Tom for reasons that will be discussed below. And what I find really interesting about this, is what it suggests about Tom's internal state: he either doesn't believe in right and wrong (because murder is wrong), or he does, and just doesn't adhere to it. The latter is more likely than you think: Here's a conclusion from the linked paper (about young children, but still interesting) that I think could apply here: "In summary, a concern for relative advantage may prevent children from enacting their knowledge of fairness when actual resources are at stake."
In short, the appeal of making a Horcrux and avoiding death is so great that he could be willing to kill for it.
Tom is incredibly self-serving, and that goes without saying. When Dippet said that Hogwarts would shut down if the monster wasn't found and dealt with, he made the snap decision to rat out 'that brainless oaf' Hagrid and Aragog (okay, not Hagrid's best idea and it could have killed people, but Tom wasn't doing it out of the goodness of his heart, or else he would have done it sooner). Since here, I think it's fairly plausible that Tom Riddle is fully aware of right and wrong, then what exactly drives him to murder?
Tumblr media
"Anyway, what really got me was that it was a boy speaking. So I unlocked the door, to tell him to go and use his own toilet, and then — I died."
I’ve heard a few competing theories about Myrtle Warren’s death:
1. Myrtle’s death was an accident: Tom was messing around with the basilisk, and didn’t realise he had an audience. Myrtle opened the stall door and her death was an honest mistake. Tom decided to capitalize on this and use the incident to make his first Horcrux. 2. Myrtle’s death was an accident: Tom was messing around with the basilisk, and didn’t realise he had an audience. Fearing being caught, Tom set the basilisk on Myrtle to keep his secret safe. Tom decided to capitalize on this and use the incident to make his first Horcrux. 3. Myrtle’s death was planned: Tom was intending to make a Horcrux, and decided to kill Myrtle because she was an easy target and no one liked her, so it would take a long time to find her body, minimizing the risk to him. 4. Myrtle’s death was kind of planned: Tom was intending to kill Muggle-borns, and poor Myrtle just happened to be there. 5. There was no real reason; Tom just likes killing people.
Out of the options, I think in terms of canon (of course fanon is whatever you like), we can rule out (1) immediately. Why? Because, although we don’t know all the sordid details, we do know that the act of murder is necessary to create a Horcrux. Perhaps, you can argue what constitutes a murder, but in my opinion, (1) is at best a tragic accident, at worst criminal negligence. So not, in my opinion, soul-splitting evil. (2), while it might be considered second-degree (I am not a legal expert by any means) still counts as murder, I think. But it does beg the question: why play around with what is in essence a weapon of mass destruction if you don’t intend to cause harm? And Diary Tom does talk about his intention to ‘kill Mudbloods.’ So, I think we can say (2) is unlikely. (3) and (4), I think, are equally probable, and both motives could in theory coexist. Something like this, perhaps?
Salazar Slytherin is revered by my housemates, who I look up to -> Salazar Slytherin is good -> His ideals are good -> purging the school of Muggle-borns is good, plus it benefits me in that I get to make a Horcrux -> killing Myrtle Warren is good.
(5) is by far the most extreme, and I think this is also improbable; because Tom seems to have decent impulse control, at least. If we look at the rest of his criminal profile around this time -- he attempts to kill Harry, and killed his Muggle family, both of which are personal -- and it's unlikely Myrtle and Tom would have known each other well enough from Tom to have enough of a vendetta to kill her. It also doesn't look like a crime of passion. Also, (5) is a boring option. Making Tom Riddle a mindless killer would suck all the fun out of my ramblings...
So, what now?
Assuming that we're going with (3) and (4) as most probable, I don't think it's likely that Tom thinks murder is right. You can make the case that given what we discussed in Part 2, as a child, at least, he might have had impaired moral reasoning, but I'm wary about saying that he flat-out doesn't know right from wrong, especially when it comes to something like murder, and we've seen him use moral duty reasoning (to justify something inherently wrong, but it still proves he can think about morals in an abstract way). But he has to rationalize it, somehow...
Tumblr media
Further evidence against (1) -- Tom seems rather blasé about the whole idea of 'killing mudbloods.'
Meanwhile, it's also not a top priority, but I can't tell if it's a throwaway villain line or not.
Unlike in HBP, here, Tom is in control of the situation. And appropriately, from the moment he enters, Coulson is an intense, dominating presence, even in the towering architecture of the Chamber; first reassuring, then threatening as he allows more and more of his true intentions to become visible to Harry (who goads him into revealing them).
He almost seems... obsessive, but almost without direction or hope (soulless, perhaps), as he circles Harry -- and there's that desperation that drives Tom Riddle to the extremes of moral depravity. And what comes across well in Coulson's portrayal, is that Harry and Tom still, even given the high stakes, seem like two schoolboys having an argument.
Introducing cognitive dissonance:
1. He believes murder is wrong 2. He's murdered someone 3. We know that in order to successfully make a Horcrux, you can't feel the guilt or remorse associated with your actions (or else you'll end up healing your soul). 4. Tom has to rationalize his actions in order to not feel guilty. From Bem (1967),
If a person holds two cognitions that are inconsistent with one another, he will experience the pressure of an aversive motivational state called cognitive dissonance, a pressure which he will seek to remove, among other ways, by altering one of the two "dissonant" cognitions
Here's a link to Festinger (1957)'s work introducing the concept.
1. The existence of dissonance, being psychologically uncomfortable, will motivate the person to try to reduce the dissonance and achieve consonance. 2. When dissonance is present, in addition to trying to reduce it, the person will actively avoid situations and information which would likely increase the dissonance.
So, Tom will want to resolve the thoughts that he thinks murder is wrong, with the fact that he has murdered. And he can't take back what he's done. He can, however, change his moral code (this is referred to as forced compliance). The deed has been done. He's killed Myrtle. Tom can't change that -- but he can change his attitude.
Specifically, Tom can decide to believe that murder, if not right, is at least not wrong.
And this is a real danger. This causes him to repeat the behaviour, and enforce this belief, until, yeah, sure, there is no good and evil.
Here's the graveyard quote again, because I'm going to reference it:
“You see that house upon the hillside, Potter? My father lived there. My mother, a witch who lived here in this village, fell in love with him. But he abandoned her when she told him what she was…. He didn’t like magic, my father … He left her and returned to his Muggle parents before I was even born, Potter, and she died giving birth to me, leaving me to be raised in a Muggle orphanage … but I vowed to find him … I revenged myself upon him, that fool who gave me his name … Tom Riddle. …”
A few months later, Tom goes to the Gaunt Shack, and hears Morfin’s version of events — that Riddle Senior left Merope because he found out that she was a witch. Tom (probably) flies into a blind rage, furious that his precious pureblood relatives are just a crazy man living in a filthy shack, believing that his ‘dirty Muggle father’ betrayed him and his mother, and didn’t love him or Merope, storms up the hill and murders Tom, Thomas, and Mary — then returns to the Gaunt shack, and takes the family ring, which becomes his second Horcrux.
And the fact that he made a Horcrux means that, again, he can't feel guilty, so this serves to really solidify his belief in pureblood supremacy and the rightness of murder into his allowable acts.
If killing Myrtle was dipping his toes into true evil, then slaughtering the Riddles is an entire left turn. Once is a mistake, twice is a pattern, and three times is a habit.
And I discussed this briefly in Part 2, but the fact that it's patricide, is especially poignant from a character perspective.
In the Roman Republic, patricide was the only crime for which a civilian could be sentenced to death.
But, I did do a quick look at the literature (which I'm not going to link because gory images) relating to patricide (there's not much, and not a lot that's recent -- the FBI agent watching my Google searches must think I'm a real weirdo). Incidents are rare and it seems to correlate with psychotic disorders and paranoia (which doesn't really fit Tom's psychological profile), and it's usually quite a violent crime (as in blunt trauma, stabbing, etc).
Whereas it's implied that Tom used the Killing Curse (there wasn't a single mark on the Riddles' bodies), which though 'unforgivable' is a rather humane way to kill. Also, there's usually a history of family violence/child abuse, and Tom didn't even know his father.
"The murder in most cases is committed in the house where perpetrators reside with the victim. It has been observed that sons/daughters who kill their parents frequently use painful methods and excessive violence, sometimes employing multiple fatal methods, thus resulting in overkill."
In fact, the only thing that seems to match up is Tom's age and the fact that sons are more commonly perpetrators than daughters.
Point being, I think the patricide bit was just put in to make Tom sound more evil. It just doesn't make sense for his character (I mean, you could make the case that he's a sadist, but... eh... a discussion for another time -- sadistic personality disorder was taken out of the DSM, anyway so I don't think there's much point in discussing it at all... and 'sadism' is a lot more common than you think.)
Anyway, the logically simplest thing to do now is to throw out the ideals of good and evil — no more pesky behavioral-cognitive dissonance. And this is when Tom becomes completely lost — everything and anything goes. He doesn’t need justification anymore.
Tumblr media
I know I said I wasn't going to wax poetic about filmography, but everything about this shot is brilliant. Perhaps the light/dark duality is a bit obvious, but Hero Fiennes-Tiffin (who plays eleven-year-old Tom) is shown exactly the same way in HBP and yes, I will talk about that, too.
Sorry, another Jung quote incoming:
“How can I be substantial if I do not cast a shadow? I must have a dark side also If I am to be whole.”
I'm going to take a brief digression into the esoterics of Jung's theories, but this is where MBTI comes from (he was the first to talk about extroversion/introversion), anyway... again, not current theory, but early twentieth-century psychology is interesting when it comes to interpreting characters.
Jung believed that there were four parts of our personality, two of which I'm going to mention briefly:
The Persona: Basically our 'mask' -- the self we present to the outside world, represents conformity.
The Shadow: The chaotic, animalistic part of your personality, represents creative and destructive energy.
And, for the first time, after Tom reveals his identity to Harry, he turns with this look of utter confidence, and not incidentally, we see his face partially shadowed for the first time. Whereas before, he was presenting the 'persona', here, we finally get to see the 'shadow' as well. The shadow does not represent a clarity or completeness anymore than the persona does; it's just a different way of being not whole. Instead of taking responsibility for his own actions, Tom's "perceived personal inferiority is recognized as a perceived moral deficiency in someone else." -- in this case, 'Mudbloods.' It's not a coincidence that this is when Coulson turns around and finally mentions his 'filthy Muggle father', the thing he's most ashamed of.
(Again, the theme of not being whole, and immaturity).
But why does he choose to murder in the first place? Why did Tom Riddle open the Chamber of Secrets?
I think Tom assumes that his Muggle father most likely died before he was born, which is why Merope named him after him. Tom hates his father because he’s learned pureblood supremacy from his fellow Slytherins, and covets the respect and power that would come with being pureblood himself as he’s sick of being mistaken for a Muggle-born (we’ve seen Dippet do it) and feels that he has to prove himself as the Heir of Slytherin by opening the CoS, having no proof of magical heritage. I don't think he's that stupid to go around flashing his Parseltongue, especially given Dumbledore's response to it, and it doesn't prove that he's the Heir of Slytherin, anyway.
Dumbledore mentions off-hand that he thinks Tom Riddle's gang helped him, but by his own admission, Tom's not fond of relying on others and I think opening the Chamber without help is well within his capabilities.
Seeing as the public doesn't know that Lord Voldemort opened the Chamber of Secrets (and thus don't know that he's the Heir of Slytherin, either), I think Tom did it all for the good of his own ego, insecurity, and of course that self-harming behaviour turned outwards that we discussed before.
In Part 1, we discussed the underlying themes of self-harm inherent in the concept of a Horcrux; especially compared to the less destructive process of making the Elixir of Life/the Philosopher's Stone. But I don't think Tom is aware of that subtext.
Now, I doubt that it's a case of oversight. If Tom looked hard enough for ways to become immortal to find Horcruxes, he must have known about the Philosopher's Stone (even I knew what that was before I read the HP books, and I'm a Muggle!).
But here's a weird thing Tom says in HBP:
"Yes, sir," said Riddle. "What I don't understand, though -- just out of curiosity -- I mean, would one Horcrux be much use? Can you only split your soul once? Wouldn't it be better, make you stronger, to have your soul in more pieces, I mean, for instance, isn't seven the most powerfully magical number, wouldn't seven -- ?"
Although we think that such a destructive process must weaken Tom, even Dumbledore doesn't seem to think that's the case:
"Yes, I think so," said Dumbledore. "Without his Horcruxes, Voldemort will be a mortal man with a maimed and diminished soul. Never forget, though, that while his soul may be damaged beyond repair, his brain and his magical powers remain intact. It will take uncommon skill and power to kill a wizard like Voldemort even without his Horcruxes."
Dumbledore also seems to think that Tom intended to make even more than seven Horcruxes:
Harry: "But I thought he meant Lucius Malfoy to smuggle it [the diary] into Hogwarts?" Dumbledore: "Yes, he did, years ago, when he was sure he would be able to create more Horcruxes..."
And again:
"Yes, I think the idea of a seven-part soul would greatly appeal to Lord Voldemort."
So, it seems that Horcruxes either don't affect your abilities, or even make you more powerful.
Since we don't get much canon information other than this, I decided to turn to other sources.
What instantly springs to mind (for me, at least) with the whole soul container concept is Koschei the Immortal/Koschei the Deathless, (okay I didn't have a lot of friends as a kid and I quite possibly have too much random mythology stuff floating around in my brain) an evil sorcerer from Russian folklore. Like Tom Riddle, he's afraid of death, and usually becomes immortal by hiding his soul in a needle that is hidden inside an egg, which is carried by a duck that flies away from anyone who tries to catch it. Sounds like a Horcrux, right?
(He's also fond of stealing your girl.)
But once you, the strapping young hero Y/N, manage to beat the odds and retrieve the egg, you've got two options.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can break the egg, get to the needle and destroy Koschei's soul, killing him and allowing you to go rescue the damsel(s) in distress and save the kingdom. Eh, close enough.
Tumblr media
Tom is unable to resist the temptation to gloat about Lord Voldemort returning 'very much alive.'
"You'll be with your dear Mudblood mother soon, Harry."
And this is one of my favourite things about Coulson's portrayal; he doesn't come off as Cartoon Evil -- while obviously being capable, dangerous, and having an extremely twisted moral code, he does feel like a teenage Voldemort. Highly skilled, yes -- but unpolished, prideful, and arrogant to a fault -- like the darker version of a Hermione-esque know-it-all. And there's that deeply-unfulfilled emptiness that we talked about in Part 2.
And given what we know about Tom's 'relationship' with Merope from HBP, there's almost a sense of jealousy here, and that fits so well with the character.
When Tom Riddle allows the extent of his true viciousness to show, he cements his downfall by basically handing Harry the tools to destroy him. As he taunts Harry, who is literally at his feet and dying from the basilisk's poison (Diary Tom gets the distinction of being the only incarnation of Voldemort who actually had a decent go at killing Harry -- if not for Fawkes, he would have been done for), he mentions the diary, which of course gives Harry (whose quick thinking is pretty incredible, might I add) the information he needs to destroy Tom.
There's another option. I mentioned that Koschei is a sorcerer -- that means that he's got all sorts of OP power-ups, like flying, shape-shifting, spellcasting, etc.
And once you, Y/N, are in possession of the egg, you have Koschei under your control, and he'll start to weaken. He'll get sick and lose his magic powers.
However, we don't really see this with Horcruxes. In the books, Tom has no idea when they've been destroyed, and it doesn't seem to weaken him.
And so, I can't help but wonder if the opposite is true... if Tom Riddle creates Horcruxes, would that grant him additional magic powers?
Seems plausible, and we'll discuss this more in Part 5.
And if so, for a sixteen-year-old Tom Riddle at the major turning point that will define his character trajectory, is that sufficient motive... to murder?
[Next time: more child psych, Wool's Orphanage, and the long-debated Dumbledore Problem]

“I’m not the bad one here”: Muu Analysis and Interpretation
Tumblr media
here is my personal muu analysis and interpretation. i'm really wondering: does muu really believe herself to be justified? is this a front she's presenting because her apologies remained unheard to the bitter end? is she really vindictive and somewhat indifferent deep down, or is she really pretending to protect herself? somewhat a bit of both? this is what i'll be trying to answer. i'm going to be using : - her official character intro in the character intros MV - her intro voice lines (from the official website) - her interview questions - her drama CD content basically every piece of muu extra content we've got, aside from minimal interactions from the app. AS WELL AS - her MV, After Pain, which i'm going to be deciphering based on the color coding! i don't think anyone has done this in full yet (if anyone did, i apologize)
(general TW for discussions & depiction of severe bullying)
as a general disclaimer,
i'm not going to reiterate points that have already been made. if you've looked at youtube comments of previously made analysis, it should be enough to determine what's going on. i'm interested in exploring why muu may feel justified in her actions and what the "darker" side of her is, is all.
there have been no hints as to the fact that she was a bully in the past or something. it could still come out that she was, or that her behavior was awful in whatever way (which i really wouldn't like bcse it reinforces the notion that bullied people "have to had deserved it" which is gross) and it still WOULD NOT change my opinion of her bcse she's still been through all that and pushed to the limit. at the end of the day, there's no way she lied about or downplayed this. she WAS horribly bullied and she almost died from it.
muu has her flaws, clearly. i'm just pointing out what they are here, her mentality and how it might allude to her being shown in a less sympathetic light next round, but that's it.
first, where does the "muu feeling justified" even come from?
to begin with, it's been stated in her intro "she can have a attitude at some times." it's also confirmed by the insults on the blackboard, transcribed in eng and edited onto the MV's visuals here (TW suicide baiting, self-harm baiting).
"So arrogant" as well as "are you looking down on us?" are written on the first blackboard, "eww poor people" on the second.
in her drama CD, muu also appears to be :
overly blunt at times
spoiled. used to being treated well, since she's rich
quite manipulative, even if she's straightforward about it
i suggest u read the whole thing to get a sense of what she's like, if you haven't yet!
once again and at the risk of repeating myself... she still doesn't deserve any of what happened even if she was condescending or flaunted her wealth. which i don't even think might be the case (it's not like the bullies are objective, they're just using it as a way to justify their treatment of her. and in the MV she says herself "There's no special meaning / I just got the short end of the stick"). she's kind of naive about her wealth (see the crepe incident dfdghjd) she doesn't appear to do it to annoy others or look down on them. she's just used to a life of comfort.
moreover, it's been implied she may have been taken advantage of initially because of her wealth (see the chat on her phone and the picture of her with the three other girls, which i'll call Girl A, Girl B and Girl C for convenience's sake and also bcse the ref to dr is funny). probably her bluntness and occasional attitude caused her more problems, but i'll come back to what triggered the bullying later.
regarding her manipulative behavior, it's because she's used to getting her way (crepe incident, her telling Es she'll just make him like her : "All I have to do is gain your favour, right?"). "my sorry spells must be wearing off" in After Pain alludes to this. since she was previously quite privileged, she had never been treated like this before. even when she made mistakes she was forgiven, so she may have been a bit of an entitled brat, once again. when she starts being bullied, her world REALLY turns upside down. she's so used to getting her way that she even THREATENS Es at the end of the drama CD. we're past manipulative here. no way to know if she has done this in the past though. this might just be due to her desperation, really, but the fact that she does it right after another attempt at sweet talk does make me raise a brow
Tumblr media
also the way she turns the tables on Es. "i won't forgive you" when she's supposed to be the one who's forgiven or not? she's rejecting the fault onto Es, just like, ALL the way through her drama CD, she's been saying she wasn't in the wrong. that's her way of justifying herself when/if she causes harm. literally she will not stop saying it :
"I’m not the bad one here!" "I did kill them. But, they’re to blame! They made it to the point where I had to kill them… I… I had such a tough time." "Sure, I might’ve killed them, but… If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have been able to escape. The cruel things they did to me were far worse!" "If you’re gonna say that I shouldn’t have killed them, then… Are you saying that I should’ve continued suffering forever?" "Even though I’m not the one in the wrong, they want to sentence me to penal servitude… That’s so messed-up." "It wasn’t a bad thing to do, right?" "What should I do then? What should I do in order for you to forgive me, prison guard? I’ll do anything! Um… Anything painful or embarrassing is out of the question though… And, I don’t wanna do anything scary either…"
muu is DESPERATE to be proven innocent. she'll do almost anything, though she's reluctant to put herself in any situation that might be triggering for her (understandable after what she's been through so i wouldn't say she's whining here.) in one of her intro voice lines on the website she says pretty much the same thing:
That’s right. I killed someone. But I couldn’t help it! If I didn’t, there’d be no way to escape. I’m… not the bad one.
in addition, here is what we get from her intro in the character intros MV:
"Fufu... it's your fault for doing horrible things to me." → Lack of remorse ?
from her interview questions:
"The person who did something wrong should apologize first." → Waiting for others to acknowledge their faults first, bcse she doesn't want her apologies to be ignored again... and to just be mistreated again, as a result?
maybe she wants to be declared innocent so that she can finally feel like she's heard, acknowledged. so that she can feel that her pain has reached people, and she might start apologizing outwardly then too, bcse part of her's sorry. but a part of her genuinely believes she had no other choice and as such should be treated as innocent. it's kind of a complex mentality.
what i'm focusing on is that she has this belief she is justified still.
something caught my eyes in relation to that : the "thinks she's the hero" on the second blackboard. muu has a self-righteous side like futa, even if it were (partially?) a front.
also, the quote behind every inmate : "every saint has a past and every sinner has a future." muu "saved" herself by killing someone else and now has a future, so she's her own hero? perhaps. perhaps that's what is helping her cope with the crushing guilt, and that's why she's outwardly so insistent on it.
but then again, something doesn't click: why would muu be saved from killing someone? the bullying has just gotten worse. why does she seem so relieved in that situation? is it because people at least don't touch her now, because they're scared of her? she is literally getting suicide baited though... well, i have an idea. but first let's decode After Pain properly.
more substance to her feeling justified: the color coding and hidden messages in After Pain
so, here goes. on the official site, people who got the innocent verdict are shown to have green eyes, while people who got the guilty verdict have red eyes. so from this, we can deduce that innocent = green and guilty = red.
Tumblr media
well... muu's MV is coded like that all the way through. we have a theme of greens (cold colors) VS oranges (warm colors). to represent her thoughts in relation to her actions, and others'. they’re complementary colors, so it’s rather clear cut (black and white?) the color that's inbetween is the yellow from the screen with the handwriting writing that keeps coming back as well as... yup... the yellow from the box cutter she used to kill Girl A, her crush (presumably). and the yellow that is muu's character color! so very significant. i'll analyse After Pain sequence by sequence so u can see what i mean in detail. beginning of the MV : she's sitting in the classroom alone. the first thing we see is the green hourglass = i'm innocent! and we see the orange glow of the sunset. the light isn't hitting her directly, as u can see: she's left in the shadows = blameless, the victim here. it's hitting the blackboard with all the insults, however.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
together with the lyrics this scene is basically everything about muu screaming "SEE? IT'S THEIR FAULT, LOOK WHAT THEY DID. I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING." and then of course we have the first instance of the screen with writing in yellow! this one says "ねえなんで" ("say, why?") nothing surprising there so far.
Tumblr media
then BOOM the hourglass. very very clearly depicting her pain, her suffocating and being cut from the world. and thus proving her "innocence" bcse she's trapped, in danger of choking, and helpless.
Tumblr media
it of course covers her (more of her basically telling you she's innocent). and then it cuts to a pinker, more orange-y scene with the bullies (they're guilty!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and WAIT A MINUTE? WHAT IS THAT? yep... the box cutter. and what color is it in this scene? orange. it was orange here.
Tumblr media
clearly she's saying that the others are much more at fault here. when she wields it, the box cutter is of a lighter color--still a warm color, since it's yellow. but a yellow that's very close to the lime green of her hourglass, isn't it? for now let's say it represents something in between, ambivalent feelings. the writing in yellow comes back and so does the chorus (look at how much i tried to apologize and make them stop). it feels to me like that's muu taking back the mic like HEY, listen up, you saw this right. in conclusion. here it is again: look at how innocent i am! look at how much i've suffered! and thus naturally it cuts to a hourglass scene immediately after.
nonetheless, the writing in yellow says... "でもたぶん" ("but maybe...") which is intriguing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
haven't mentioned this before but obviously muu herself is a mix of warm and cold colors, aka pink (her uniforms highlights, the sleeves and tie + her hair) and green (her eyes, with a highlight of lime/yellow...) then we're back in the classroom and once again the orange light = guilt isn't hitting her directly.
Tumblr media
and the colors picked in the LINE chat with the others areee.... naturally, green for her, pink for the others... yellow for the whole background, just as yellow encompasses the entire MV as her true feelings on the matter.
Tumblr media
title screen in yellow then flashes yet again, followed AGAIN by the hourglass scene (muu repeating, just like in her drama CD: "yeah, here's my whole story, and i'm innocent!")
the writing in yellow says "ねえもしも" ("hey, tell me...")
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the writing in yellow flashes for the FOURTH TIME and this is the most interesting instance: "それなのに" ("even so...")
Tumblr media
this shot is doused in orange/warmer yellow on the bullies' side and in the background too. super self-explanatory really
Tumblr media
the orange light of guilty is still not hitting muu. meanwhile on her lap...
Tumblr media
on the left, the bullies' stockings are blue, but they have a orange hue to them. the rest of the objects here in cold tones are all related to muu or touching her. the picture on her phone is split between yellow and blue. like the blame and innocence was, back then, even/balanced in the sense of peace and quiet, or perhaps just hidden in the background before it jumped out?
Tumblr media
she's hit by the orange light here and please look at how the bucket is not blue at all and the floor below her is more yellow. Girl A is the one to open the door, so i think this might show Girl A's POV in relation to muu. not perceiving her innocence.
Tumblr media
Girl A's eyes here are green and yellow, so to some extent innocent but guilty in a way that is justified in muu's mind? which is why muu reaches out to her. thus here's my theory on what happened with her : muu confessed, yes. however, the girl didn't out her. especially bcse the blackboard doesn't have any mention of muu liking girls (going by the TL previously shared at least). she just started avoiding muu. given the lyrics here: Girl A used muu's attitude concerning other matters as justification for avoiding her, which kickstarted the bullying. hence "the stabbing of the little devil's voice" which references something Girl A said about her attitude, prompting the rest of their friend group to see muu in a negative light so as to side with her. (since muu's planned counterattack to what Girl A said is a suicide note, it can only be Girl A that's the "devil". the cause.)
also please note how the light is only HALF hitting the background. she's to blame, but not entirely. not yet. besides her eyes are a different shade of green than muu's: darker, far from lime. clearly just green + yellow highlight, without the blatant "innocent" of the lighter lime. entirely ambivalent!
Tumblr media
in this shot, the light is deserting muu's eyes. no lime green or yellow here. she just has dead eyes, resembling Girl A's eyes at the end of the video. this is muu telling us that this was her last chance not to become a corpse.
Tumblr media
then muu reaches out to the one person she could ask for help. the one person who could have cleared any misunderstanding and possibly stopped this. she's running and everything is soooo yellow and orange. EXCEPT for the bushes which are green, a firm line (literal lines!) that allude to the possibility that Girl A might change her behavior. "perhaps she'll realized she crossed the line/know where the line is and walk off this path."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
however, muu steps into the light here. she's been hit by the window's light even if we can't see it, as seen by her shadow. hence, she's already guilty, it's just out of frame (she doesn't realize/know it yet.) still, note that the light hitting her is not orange but ONLY YELLOW. less guilty than the others! but the school? orange. guilty place. guilty people
Tumblr media
Girl A is still framed by green stuff. she has a possibility of being innocent, of being forgiven by muu, but the path she's walking is orange, clearly.
Tumblr media
we see a tiny hourglass fall off, a timid reminder from muu "i know what you're about to see, just remember i'm not to blame." and then muu reaches Girl A and the background is just SO yellow and orange for the both of them. but notice something? on muu's side the background is more yellow. on Girl A's side it gets darker, more orange.
Tumblr media
Girl A doesn't respond for a moment and her eyes are still green and yellow! muu has hope that she might still change for the better and forgive her! see that muu's innocent!
Tumblr media
but nope! she rejects muu! and we get this deep orange!!! NOTHING like the yellow in the background earlier! this is the last straw for muu!
Tumblr media
contrasting with the green of muu's hourglass breaking as she hits her limit:
Tumblr media
yellow, vengeful fire burning next to muu. it's practically shimmering as she stabs Girl A. it's so light it's almost white.
Tumblr media
Girl A's eyes have turned orange bcse in that moment in muu's mind SHE is the guilty one. she deserves this.
Tumblr media
while in contrast, even if the background behind muu's very orange... her eyes are glowing lime/yellow.
Tumblr media
i hit picture limit so this is part 1! (reblogging this to add more. here is the full post with part 2 as well)

Meeting and Dating Severen
Tumblr media
(Not my gif)(Requested by anonymous)
- You first met Severen at the sleazy bar you called your place of employment. You were serving a booth their drinks when he and the others made their entrance. And oh what an entrance it was.
- As per usual, Severen started to make chaos the moment he walked in, talking/laughing loudly and nearly getting himself into a fight. You really didn’t want to go over and serve him but you were the only there besides one other bartender and the man was conveniently MIA.
- So you swallowed down your feelings of dread and maneuvered yourself behind the bar.
- The rowdy man straightened himself out upon your arrival, a Cheshire grin spreading across his face as he focused his sights on you.
“Well ain’t you a pretty little thing.”
- Against your better judgement, a small smile spread across your face. He was much more handsome up close, and when he was behaving himself properly.
- There was an undeniable attraction growing between the two of you, especially on his part. He acted the same as he always did with women but there was something different about you, something special.
- Lets make things clear, none of these vamps know how to do things conventionally, especially not Severen. You don’t have a romantic start to your relationship, you have a frightening one.
- Shit hit the fan not long after you poured the unusual patron a drink. Like a rational person, you plastered yourself against the wall and watched with wide eyes as him and the others dealt with the other occupants of the bar.
- Once they were finished, Severen hopped down on your side of the bar, throwing his arm around your shoulders and calling you cute.
“I think we should keep her.” He grinned, twirling a piece of your hair between his bloodied fingers.
- You were obviously afraid; as one should be, but a part of you was weirdly accepting of the situation. It was as though what you’d experienced was so unreal that your mind decided to rationalize it as though it were normal.
- So when Severen began to lead you out of the bar with them, throwing a pointed look at his companions as they opened their mouths to argue, you just let him. And when he pulled you into the rv with them, talking your ear off and blatantly flirting; you let him do that too.
- Don’t blame yourself too much for your questionable decisions, you’ll find out soon enough that the two of you are mates.
- Since your new friends burnt down the bar, anyone who was aware of your existence thought you were dead which made things particularly easy for Severen.
- For better or for worse, the two of you grew close very quickly and soon enough he decided to shoot his shot. He announced that he would “watch you” as everyone went out in search of a meal.
- While the two of you were walking, he began to ramble on about how you made a good team and how it “only made sense” for the two of you to get together.
“So what do you say?” He grinned at you cockily.
- He kisses you for the first time once you agree, letting out a “well come here then” before he swiftly pulls you in and lays one on you.
- And thus, the chaotic vampire found his one true love.
- Pda? I mean you aren’t in public all that much but he’s constantly hanging all over you so I suppose that’s pretty much the same thing.
- Whenever you are in public, he’s making sure everyone knows that you’re together by keeping his hands on you at all times. He’s very proud of his girl.
- Bear hugs. He’s constantly pulling you in and wrapping his arms tightly around you. He’s going to squeeze the life out of you one day; you’re sure of it.
- Hugs from behind. They’re mainly an excuse for him to grind against your backside.
- Dancing together.
- Holding hands.
- Sooo many pet names; sometimes you’re sure that he’s forgotten your real name. You aren’t complaining though, it makes everytime he calls you your real name even more special/ powerful.
- Affectionate name calling. He can’t explain why he enjoys having you call him an asshole but you should know that he does.
- He likes picking you up, typically by your clothing before he decides that he wants to hold you close.
- Bloody kisses. You better get used to the taste.
- Be wary when he tries to flatter you, especially in excess. He typically has an ulterior motive when he starts to bombard you with compliments.
- He’s constantly teasing you. There is never a time when he isn’t poking fun and trying to get a reaction out of you.
- He’s an annoying ass yet sweet at the same time. He gives off crackhead older brother vibes most of the time. He can mess with you but is ready to tear someone a new one if they try doing the same.
- Witnessing him kick a door down then slide out of the way and hold it open for you with this innocent little doting boyfriend smile. It’s kind of amusing to see how quickly his attitude shifts when you’re involved.
- He’s constantly stealing things for you. You learn not to ask where he gets them from since it’s either a store or someone who’s no longer breathing.
- Causing chaos together. Want to steal a car? Want to start a fire? Want to go completely ape shit? He’s got an anarchist mind and he’s ready for a partner in crime; literally.
- He’s always trying to make you laugh. It isn’t hard for him which never fails to give him an ego boost. He boasts about how you find him hilarious to the others both when you and when you aren’t around.
- Getting to see all his neat little gun tricks. He likes being able to impress you.
- He may or may not get turned on when you handle his guns. Be prepared for more than a few innuendos and instances of him tearing off your clothes.
- He would absolutely feed on you if given the chance. He’d call you delicious before pressing his bloodied lips to your cheek and calling you “a doll”.
- He can clean up surprisingly well. You were genuinely shocked when you saw him all dressed up for the first time.
- Falling asleep on him in the rv.
- The two of you don’t exactly have a bed 90% of the time so you just have to try and cuddle however you can. A lot of the time, you’ll be sitting on his lap with him pressed against your back.
- You’ll have to change your sleep schedule if you want to spend any length of time with him. You being tired sort of kills the mood, even if he finds sleepy you adorable.
- You’re sort of used as a clothing rack. His sunglasses? On you. His jacket? On you. His rings? On you. Its both for “safe keeping” and because you look cute in them.
- Occasionally helping him lure in his victims, or being called a sweetheart when you refuse to.
- He’d find your morals both sweet and exasperating. He enjoys how innocent and kind you are but also yearns for you to be a little evil once in a while.
- Whenever you’re out on the town, he’ll either drag you to the bar with him or you’ll sit with the others in a booth while he does his thing. You‘ll most likely prefer the latter, you might not want to be in the line of fire when he starts causing trouble.
- Playing with or watching him play pool. He likes to wink at you whenever he catches you watching him closely, usually before he makes a perfect shot.
- He curses like a sailor. You can’t remember how many times you’ve had to scold him or slap his arm because he was being completely inappropriate in the worst way possible.
- He also uses insults like they mean nothing. He’ll either call you something or call someone else something which usually tends to start some trouble.
- You pretty much have to keep an eye on him at all times since you know it only takes him a few seconds to completely destroy the peace in the room or wherever else he is. As fun as it is to see him go crazy, sometimes it’s best to not let him get to that point.
- Joking threats. He likes playing up his vampirism, trying to make you a little nervous and enjoying the subtle acceleration of your heart. Even so, he’s the only one that’s allowed to scare you.
- He’s very protective of you even though he; oftentimes, tries to hide it with humor. He tries not to make a big deal out of things until he really has to though occasionally something will really set him off. You’ll be able to see the mirderous intent in his eyes, the twinkles leaves them and they just go cold as his smile drops.
- Anyone that tries to flirt with you is immediately plotted against. It isn’t uncommon for him to kill people that he thinks are trying to get with you. Jesse’s had to hold him back a few times when the group can’t afford a body on their hands. So yes, he’s extremely jealous.
- He claims you with one of his rings, making sure you know exactly what you wearing it means.
“This here,” he takes your hand roughly. “This here means that you’re mine, darlin. Dont you forget it.”
- A sick part of him likes when you get mad or jealous at/over him. Seeing you get all vicious and vindictive makes his day.
- You don’t expect it but he’s fairly good at easing tension. The only problem is that he rarely wants to ease tension. It really just depends on what’s going on, sometimes he’ll want to fight and sometimes he won’t; particularly when it comes to you.
- He’s got a wicked temper and no patience for complaining or anything of the sort. You’ll certainly have your fair share of fights, especially if you plan on staying together for a “long time”.
- He tries to make you smile when “pleading” for your forgiveness. He tries to “cute” or bother his way out of trouble when he manages to really piss you off. You can never really stay mad at him for that exact reason.
- You get a lot of teasing/joking ‘I love you’s’ but you get a few more earnest ones as well. You cherish them since they’re few and far between.
- There’s a part of him which doesn’t want to turn you, keeping you soft and warm, but another part of him couldn’t bear to see you get hurt or imagine a world where you’re not by his side. So he’ll most likely put off biting you for a while before he finally bucks up and does it.
- He’s ready to spend the rest of eternity with you so believe me; he isn’t letting you go anytime soon.

Jin Guangyao's Violation of 忠孝仁义
So I had written about WWX and his strong sense of 忠孝仁义 last week. While I was writing it, I kept on thinking about JGY and how he managed to violate all of these virtues. I wanted to go into this characterization of him because I find it so interesting how opposite he is to WWX in the decisions he made. (Warning: i’m not nice to JGY here so if you don’t want him dragged, don’t read?)
Tumblr media
忠- loyalty, devotion, fidelity (usually for country or monarch)
Tumblr media
(Can I take a moment to talk about how much I LOVE THIS SHOT?! The blood of WRH on the camera lens, WRH falling over, the sudden shift to brightness that mirrors the scene in ep 50 where JGY obscures the sun in his bow (picture above the read more cut)! I can’t get over how much I LOVE the lighting and the way WRH collapses, making way for JGY to become the new sun. Foreshadowing much CQL Crew?!)
This one might be a stretch depending on how you read JGY. I fully believe he went to work for Wen Ruohan as Wen Zhuliu did -- seeking someone who will value his skills. However, WZL died for WRH and JGY just bided his time. (Note: While we know very little about Wen Zhuliu, we know he was at least 忠 and 义. He died for WRH and Wen Chao and refused to let WC desecrate Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan’s bodies. For that, I have to give him respect. He, despite everything, still had that jianghu sense of 义. Also, the man can count. And knows what a golden core feels like.)
So we know JGY gave Lan Xichen the maps, but he also lured them to Nightless City where the puppets were waiting. Had WWX not brought out the Stygian Tiger Amulet, would JGY have murdered WRH? Or would he have stayed in the shadows forever? As a viewer I have no idea what JGY is thinking, what he’s doing, or what he’s hoping for. He hides so well his intentions that there is debate about if he really was helping with the Sunshot Campaign or not! That isn’t something you can say about someone with loyalty.
What upsets me further is that Nie Mingjie, having been JGY’s superior officer, sees JGY more clearly than LXC can. NMJ has seen JGY murder and has seen the level of self-serving vindictiveness JGY is capable of. In the case of the Sunshot Campaign, this self-serving attitude made JGY become a double agent uncommitted to either side. Too bad NMJ could not convince LXC of JGY’s duplicity. I’m gonna blame those dimples.
The fact that we do not know JGY’s intent really shows his lack of 忠. If You Stand For Nothing, JGY, What Will You Fall For? (Answer: Himself and that is not 忠)
孝 - filial piety (deference to your lineage)
So for 孝, you’re supposed to respect your parents, honor your parents, and defer to your parents. What are you not supposed to do? Kill you father. That’s what.
So this should’ve been a really short section because that’s pretty cut and dry. But I want to look at what JGY says to JGS when JGY brings in Sisi and the other women.
Tumblr media
(He’s so creepy in this picture! *shudders*)
“父亲,我给你找来了你最爱的女人. 有很多个. 你高兴吗?”
“Father, I have brought you your favorite -- women. There are many. Are you happy?”
(Translation note: you can translate the line as your favorite women or your favorite -- women. I chose to translate it as the latter due to the context.)
First of all, the tone. JGY’s voice is breathy. I can almost hear a smile. He has zero moral qualms about this. He addresses his father as father, not dad or anything close. But he does acknowledge that relationship. And then he says he’s brought JGS’s favorite. There’s a slight emphasis on the favorite there. And it’s creepy. JGY adds the next line and goose bumps start to form on my skin. He knows his father’s sins and he’s punishing his father with it. Why are you doing this JGY?! And at the end, when it asks “Are you happy?” his voice is so sinister I want to scream. JGY clearly knows what he’s doing. He knows exactly what it means to be 孝 and chooses to make a mockery of 孝, to make a mockery of his father, and to kill his father.
And then, after he watches JGS die, he tells Sisi and the other women to continue -- to desecrate JGS’s body. This is about as un-孝 as one can get! Remember, WWX and JC were willing to die to get JFM and YZY’s bodies back so they could be cremated and honored. The difference here is night and day! Yes, JGY was very good to his mother, including building a Guanyin Statue in her likeness and sparing Sisi who was a friend of his mother’s, but I cannot get over how much of an abomination he was toward JGS (even if JGS deserved an awful death).
仁 - benevolence, humanity, love of man
JGY has no 仁. Does JGY love anyone other than himself? Maybe his mom. (He might have some 仁 towards Su Sh*t She but that’s only suggested by the last couple of episodes.) That’s really it. He might have loved Jin Ling as his nephew. He might have loved LXC for LXC’s kindness and brotherhood. He might have loved Qin Su as whatever relationship he thinks they had. But when push comes to shove, JGY has zero benevolence towards anyone. He’s willing to kill Qin Su, take Jin Ling hostage, and take LXC hostage. (He also has no 义 but that’s the next section!)
And there’s ep 23. When LXC, JGS, and NMJ were discussing what to do with the Wens,  JGY suggested the Wens be imprisoned at QiongQi Path. Since WRH had ordered the slaughter of multiple clans, including the Jiangs at Lotus Pier, doing the same to him would not be considered unreasonable. Ruthless, yes, but a good show of might and order. This acceptance of murder is due to the concept of 诛九族. 诛九族 (zhū jiǔ zú) is one of the most severe punishments in ancient China. The character breakdown makes it fairly self explanatory:
诛 - to execute, kill, put to death
九 - nine
族 - family, clan,ethnic group, or tribe
诛九族 condemns you and your entire family to death (Depending on the source, some say it’s you + 8 types of relatives. Some say it’s everyone related to you from 4 generations above to 4 generations below).
By suggesting the Wen remnants be imprisoned and not slaughtered, JGY presented himself as 仁. However, by turning around and slaughtering the people per JGS’s wishes, JGY knowingly chose the immoral path where blood flowed like rivers.
(Also! The way this shot pans down makes me think about how JGY is descending into a hell of his own making...)
Tumblr media
义-  righteousness and code of brotherhood
Good god, 义. I have so many feelings about 义. Let’s start with some history because CONTEXT is so important. So when you ask a chinese person on the street to give you an example of 义, I’m willing to bet one of the most common answers you will get is 桃园结义 (tao yuan jie yi, or peach garden/grove establishment of brotherhood). This is THE story of fraternal love between non-blood related men.
So quick and dirty synopsis of 桃园结义 and the three kingdoms story (I actually haven’t read it and it’s been a while since I actually tried to figure out the plot… so hopefully this is all correct!). Three men (刘备、关羽、张飞/ Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei) met on the streets, fought each other, became besties, and decided to start a rebellion. They took over one third of the country with the oldest (刘备) being the monarch and the other two working at his side (a little Yunmeng bros feel there, right? You’ll be the leader, I’ll be your right hand man). And they died for each other. 关羽 was the first to go. To seek revenge, 张飞 worked his men to the rebellion. Two of 张飞’s subordinates ultimately decapitated him while he was sleeping and brought it to their enemy. 张飞’s head and body are buried in two different cities in China (doesn’t this make you think of NMJ’s fate? Because it did when I was thinking about this and I wanted to cry. Also, 张飞 started out as a butcher. SERIOUSLY CQL/MDZS, can we pretend to be SUBTLE!?). 刘备 continued seeking revenge. Prior to 关羽’s death, the three kingdoms were in semi-equilibrium where the two smaller ones were allied against the larger. However, 关羽 being killed by their kinda-ally destroyed the delicate balance between the three kingdoms. 刘备 could’ve tried to make peace but he wasn’t going to let his sworn brother’s murder go unavenged. They all died in the end but with honor and brotherhood intact. 刘备 and 张飞’s determination to avenge 关羽’s death epitomizes the virtue of 义. They are willing to die for eachother.
In CQL the parallelism to the 桃园义 imagery is obvious to anyone who has a cultural background that screams Romance of Three Kingdoms at you. Let’s take a look, ok?
A quick Google image search yields these images (I couldn’t choose):
Tumblr media
You know what they look like? This (from ep 40):

You know what 桃园结义 looks like when mainland China made a live action? This:
Tumblr media
And you know what that reminds me of in CQL (ep 23)?
Tumblr media
Are you freaking out now about the visual parallels? Ok. Good. Because we’re moving onto a tiny bit of text comparison because i’m excited and i can.
Per Romance of Three Kingdoms (note: historically inspired novel, not history), 刘备、关羽、张飞 swore the following oath:
“念刘备、关羽、张飞,
Hope that Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei
虽然异姓,既结为兄弟,
Even though we have different last names, since we have sworn to be brothers
则同心协力,救困扶危;
Then let us unite our hearts and efforts towards helping the needy
上报国家,下安黎庶。
Repaying our country, bringing peace to the people.
不求同年同月同日生,
We do not ask to be born on the same day of the same month of the same year
只愿同年同月同日死。
But hope to die on the same day of the same month of the same year
皇天后土,实鉴此心,
Heaven and earth, verify our hearts
背义忘恩,天人共戮!”
If we turn our backs to righteousness and forget charity, may we be slaughtered by all.
Now, let’s look at the oath said by the 3zun:
“神明在上。
Brilliant gods above,
今日我兄弟三人在此立下重誓,
Today, we three brothers swear a solemn oath here
上报仙门,下安黎庶 ,
To repay our cultivation sects, To bring peace to the people.
天地同证,如有异心,
Heaven and earth be our witnesses. If we become disloyal,
千夫所指,天人共怒”
May a thousand men point their fingers at us and may we be incite the anger of all
Even some of the wording is verbatim. The parts I bolded are what I was excited by since they’re either parallel or verbatim.
The first set of lines: 上报国家,下安黎庶 and 上报仙门,下安黎庶 . (Remember when I guessed in my WWX post that since there are no countries, the cultivation sects are the target of 忠? This is my proof that I was right!) My hubris aside, this is the part of their oath where they swear to be both 忠 and 仁 together. The wording is verbatim except for the part that doesn’t apply to the CQL universe!
The second set of lines: 天人共戮 vs 天人共怒. The sentence/phrase format and message is identical-- betray this oath and incur wrath.  (I can’t help but headcanon NMJ wanted to say 天人共戮 because it’s so much more metal but JGY was like, that’s really severe and convinced LXC to side with him to get it changed.)
Even the structure of the oaths are similar. Both oaths start with an introduction (we are three who want to be brothers), both oaths ask the heaven and earth to see them (Heaven and earth, verify our hearts & heaven and earth be our witnesses), and both oaths call upon the wrath of the people for vindication in case of betrayal. The CQL version is an abridged version of the three kingdoms oath and the writers set that up along with all the imagery because they want us to be constantly thinking about the three kingdoms bros and their amazing “even after death we’re still brothers” sense of 义.  They want us to compare JGY’s 义 with that 义 and find JGY lacking.
The obvious betrayal of 义 is NMJ’s death.  Not only is JGY the cause of NMJ’s death, he butchers (i’m cringing at my own pun... but it’s so accurate) NMJ’s body so that NMJ’s spirit cannot rest.
But, to me, what JGY does to LXC is betrayal on par with what he does to NMJ (and not dissimilar to what Xue Yang does to Xiao Xingchen). As we went over in the section about 仁, JGY says one thing so that LXC suggest JGY handles the matter. When everyone leaves, JGY does the un-仁 thing, essentially with LXC’s blessing. JGY kills NMJ but he does it by asking LXC to teach him how to play guqin. LXC becomes an unknowing accomplice (like XXC who becomes the killer of tongueless victims of corpse poison).
So remember in my WWX post how I said WWX took on what he perceived as JC’s debts so JC doesn’t end up 不仁不义? JGY says one thing and does another in front of LXC. He knows LXC cares deeply about being righteous and kind. He knows LXC wants to do good. And he leads LXC down a path of self doubt and regret. LXC ends up teaching JGY the techniques that kill NMJ. LXC lets JGY handle the Wen remnants. Thus, unlike WWX who tries to absolve JC, JGY intentionally puts LXC into the position of 不仁不义.
Can WWX and JGY be more diametrically opposed (foes)?

Imma analyze Amity's diary entries now even though Lost In Language was like ten episodes ago. I was just rewatching it and wanted to share my analysis on what Amity's written
"I saw that human girl again. I may have...overreacted. I don't wanna come across as cruel, I just can't show weakness!"
Okay, let's start here. I think the most interesting part of this is actually her line about now showing weakness. I mean we could focus on the fact that she regrets being so harsh on Luz, but we all know she's a good person by now who doesn't want to be cruel and hurt people. That's no secret. What I find interesting is the reason Amity was so hostile, bordering on cruel. Because she can't show weakness. Nowadays I see people assuming this line might be in reference to her cruch on Luz. She can't show how soft Luz really makes her, you know? But that doesn't make sense because at the time Amity didn't like Luz. Any positive feelings that Amity has for Luz started developing at the end of Lost In Language. I think the emotion she's trying not to express as not to look weak is sadness and hurt. As ive said before, Luz humiliated and upset Amity during their first two meetings. Like, from episode 3 where Willow and Luz cheat in class, we see their actions have consequences. They hurt people. Amity in specific. And that was her first impression of Luz. A cheater. A liar. Somebody willing to let Amity get in trouble or be called jealous and vindictive before she's willing to admit she cheated. And Luz once again humiliated her in episode 5. And again in episode 7 when Luz was hanging out with Amity's cruel older siblings and seemingly going through her diary. Amity fully thought Luz was humiliating her on purpose. Getting her in trouble on purpose. Trying to get closer to her just so she could toy with her. Amity thought Luz was trying to be cruel when Luz hurt her because she never ever met someone who just...did dumb things sometimes without thinking. With her parents and siblings and friends, any hurtful action was meant to be hurtful. Why would she assume that when Luz hurt her it was any different? Luz was anxious around Luz because "every time you get near me I get in trouble!" And she was still hurt from what Luz had done in the past. I think that's the weakness she didn't wanna show. Amity doesn't like being cruel, even to people she think deserve it, but I think her coldness towards Luz in particular was a defense strategy. She was sad and anxious and hurt and embarassed, but those emotions are all weak. They make her look and feel helpless. Anger isn't weak though, so maybe if she's rude and cold towards Luz instead of being hurt and humiliated in frint of Luz she won't look so pathetic. Because Blight's don't show weakness.
"It's not fair! I'm the only one who knows Ed and Em aren't perfect! Why do they keep getting away with things?!?"z
This reveals a little bit more about their general family dynamic. Because we know now that Edric and Emira don't get in trouble very often. That people seemingly think the two are 'perfect'. This probably includes their parents. If Ed and Em really keep getting away with everything (and we know they're big trouble makers) from their parents who we know abuse Amity, then that explains a lot about the dynamic between the Blight siblings. Why Ed and Em think it's okay to make fun of and humiliate and hurt Amity with little to no remorse. Because Edric and Emira have been taught to believe Amity somehow deserves to be treated poorly. That somehow the two of them are above Amity. Because when abusive parents pick a favorite child, then it isn't hard to play siblings against each other. To get their favorites to follow in their footsteps and participate in abusing the 'lesser' child. Which seems like exactly what's happening here. I mean, Edric and Emira's excuses of "It's tough love" and "We're doing this to help Amity" and "This is for her own good" when they were trying to get ahold of Amity's diary sounded like they were taken right out of the mouths of abusive gaslighting parents. Edric and Emira can skip class and vandalize library property without fear of repercautions. Amity goes into a panic over the tiniest mistakes and visibly flinched when people raise their voices at her. This line in her diary kinda confirmed what id already been suspecting from Ed and Em's disregard for Amity's feelings.
"I wish I had somewhere to go.."
This one was interesting to me. Because it can be taken in a few ways. Obviously this "somewhere to go" would be an attempt to escape her horrible home life. The question is weather she means somewhere to go temporarily away from the eyes of her family, or if she wants to run away from home or something of the sort but doesn't have anywhere to run to. And I can't help leaning towards the latter. It would be a little weird for Amity to wish for a place that's all her own to go temporarily when she already has her library hangout. I mean, it seems like she has been hanging out im her library room for a while, and nobody in her family hang out in the library like she does, so Amity does have somewhere to go in that sense already. However Amity didn't, at the time, have anywhere to go if she tried to escape her parents abuse permenantly. All her friends at the time she'd met through her parents so there's no way they would have helped her, Amity's parents had already burned her ties with the only friend who didn't have any loyalty to them and might have been willing to help Amity (Willow), and Amity wasn't very close to Luz at the time. Amity is definately a victim of abuse. It wouldn't surprise me if she wanted out but was being held back by how her parents isolated her to where she only knew people who support her abusive parents.
"Why won't the human leave me alone?!?"
At first I thought Amity was annoyed that Luz wanted to be friends with her. After all, we saw Luz trying and failing to befriend Amity earlier that episode, right? But this entry was almost certainly written before Lost In Language. And before Lost In Language, Luz didn't really try to befriend Amity. This is probably about how Amity thought Luz was a bully. As I mentioned earlier in the post, Amity thought Luz hurt and humiliated her on purpose. Thought Luz was going out of her way to toy with Amity. The thing that lead Amity to dislike Luz was that she thought Luz was dishonest and unremorseful. Amity's had enough of people who are dishonest and unremorseful. Her parents, siblings, and so called friends are all those things. And at first she must have thought Luz was just like them. Luz hurt Amity, Luz lied in how she represented herself, Luz didn't officially apologize until after this diary entry will have been made. And Amity must have been so done with that kind of thing. With lies and unapologetic attitudes. With bullies. And she thought Luz was a bully. I feel like that's the reason she really wanted Luz to just leave her alone. After all, earlier in the episode she said "Every time you come near me I get in trouble! Just leave me alone!", which reminds me a lot of her diary entry also showing a desire for Luz to leave her be.
"I called my teacher mom again..."
Honestly, while Amity calling her teacher mom doesn't seem like anything noteworthy on the surface, I would say it is important. Because for starters, Amity is a bit old to make this mistake. Little kids will sometimes call their teacher mom once or twice by mistake because they're used to the person taking care of them being their mother so sometimes without thinking they'll call their caretaker mom. However ive never heard of a highschooler, a child in the age range where they're less dependent on their parents than little kids are and less likely to see all caretakers as parental figures, call their teacher mom. Much less do it multiple times. And I can't help but wonder if this might be caused by the fact that her parents are the worst, forcing Amity to cling onto her teachers for the praise and support her parents don't give her. She's being abused by her parents, of course she'd grab onto her teachers to be parental figures because they're the only adults she has that don't hurt her. Because fourteen year olds don't usually get into the habit of calling their teachers mom and the fact that Amity has might be a sign of just how wrong things are at home.
"Sorry I haven't written for a while. Wait! Why am I apologizing?"
I mean, honestly, apologizing when you didn't do anything wrong is classic abuse victim behavior. And it is incredibly in character for Amity. She seems to have this perpetual sense of guilt over just...being human (metaphorically, she's a witch, not a human). Over any emotions or the smallest mistakes. It's pretty obvious that someone has made Amity to always feel guilty. Like she's doing something wrong or not doing enough right. To the point where not writing in her diary for a while is something she instinctively apologized for. It's kinds just...classic abuse victim behavior, typical of someone with a lot of self loathing, and makes me wanna punt her parents even more because I habe the feeling they're behind that tendancy.
